Tiong Bahru is rapidly rising to be the next top hipster enclave. Will we end up overriding the heritage of the nostalgic neighborhood we once knew, as it becomes one so modernised? Are pies and cakes really slowly snuffing out laksa and chwee kueh? We asked and you answered! Here are just two of our favorite answers: Richard Chung says: Top Answer: To be honest – what is better than having a pies and cakes! Enjoying the rustic atmosphere of tiong bahru. After having a hearty lunch at tiong bahru market! It’s the perfect winning combination. It’s all about bringing in the younger people into a place filled with history. Who knows, you might meet someone at a cafe around the area who can educate us. It’s a win-win situation!

Athena Choo says: Well, time has changed and so have our taste buds! Changes need to be made to cater to mass market and even the traditional goodies like mooncakes are labelled “low sugar” to fit the needs of modern people and their eating habits. I see the need for variety from good O’fashion chwee kwehs to innovative hybrid confections. Even my granny enjoys eating pork floss bun which didn’t exist back in her younger days. It’s a mistake to “replace” any sort of delectable dishes but instead “expand” the variety to fit the cosmopolitan city like Singapore.

RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER

Juicy reviews & tips on the EPL & the best of world football

Clash of the derbies

Both teams are in dire need of a victory to get their season back on track.

Don’t we all love derby clashes? This weekend serves a massive treat of not one but two major derbies, with both pairs from Merseyside and North London facing each other in potentially explosive clashes. A word of caution: Derbies are not for the faint-hearted. You have been warned.

AGIF / Shutterstock.com

It’s a weekend full of mouth-watering rivalries as Liverpool face Everton in the Merseyside derby while Arsenal take on Tottenham in the North London clash

It doesn’t get any fiercer than the Merseyside derby. With both teams desperate for a win, could we see a red card in this match?

Pressure is mounting after Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United suffered a 5-3 loss to Leicester City

Merseyside Derby: Liverpool vs Everton (Sat, 7.45pm) Having exceeded expectations last season, both Liverpool and Everton seem to be struggling to replicate their form. Both sides lost in the previous weekend, with Everton losing 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace while Liverpool fell to a shock 3-1 defeat against West Ham. The result means that Liverpool has lost three out of five opening games, while

Photo: Peter Powell/EPA

Everton has only one win and two draws to its name. Both teams are in dire need of a victory to get their season back on track. The Reds were rampant against Everton at Anfield the last time these two sides met, winning 4-0, but the three games before that ended in entertaining draws. Neither of them can ill afford to lose, so don’t rule out a fourth draw in five games. Prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Other Matches:

Manchester United vs West Ham Anything is possible with United having suffered a shock 5-3 defeat to Leicester City last weekend, and the Hammers are high on confidence after their victory over Liverpool. This should be a juicy match. Prediction: Manchester United 3-2 West Ham

North London Derby: Arsenal vs Tottenham (Sun, 12.30am) Both Arsenal and Tottenham have had contrasting fortunes leading up to this game. Arsenal recovered from the damaging Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund in style to brush aside Aston Villa 3-0 last weekend. Danny Welbeck opened his goalscoring account and Mesut Ozil finally turned up the style. Spurs, on the other hand, are winless in four games in all competitions, and looked helpless against West Brom, having mustered only a single shot on target in the 1-0 defeat at White Hart Lane. The Gunners are one of two teams left in the Premier League still unbeaten, and their unbeaten run looks set to continue as Spurs failed to score in the last three North London derbies. The Gunners will go for glory for sure. Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham

Chelsea vs Aston Villa It’s safe to say Villa will be no match for the might of Chelsea. Costa is expected to continue his fine goalscoring form. Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Aston Villa By Ahmad Khan Tune in to Red Card Sports on StarHub TV Ch 225 or download the “StarHub TV Anywhere” app.

Entertainment FLUFFY’s Pet DIARY Musings by Fluffy, the rescued pooch, on her new life as a beloved pet and other furry tales

Part 1 of 8 Hi, I’m Fluffy! Because I was rescued and I’m now living the good life, I hope all pets can too!

Pet-proof your place Today, I overheard my humans talking about pet-proofing our place. I wonder what that means – do you know? Hello humans, I arf in peace! My name is Fluffy and I am three years old. I was abandoned as a little pup but I was rescued by kind souls. Now, I’ve been given a lovely new home with very loving owners. My owner Franky, and his Mum and Dad, spend a lot of time playing with me and looking after my needs. That makes me really happy. When Franky is in school, Dad and Mum will take care of me. But Dad says with a new pet (companion) comes great pet-sponsibilities. So, one day I woke up and saw him fixing things up around the house! I followed him around and curiously noted what he did.

Hiding exposed wire cables I love to chew and may not know what’s dangerous. Mum is very kind to have hidden all wire cables from me since Day 1 of my arrival. Now I can chew in peace!

Removing sharp objects Franky’s latest school project requires the use of a pen knife. To keep me safe, he makes sure that he keeps it away from my reach at the end of each use.

LEARN MORE! I heard Dad telling Mum and Franky that they’re going to the SPCA & AVA to celebrate World Animal Day 2014 (11am to 8pm) this weekend at United Square Shopping Mall to learn more about pet care. I have to stay home but it’s okay. I need my beauty sleep before the next round of play with Franky anyway. I hope all pet owners around the world would take care of us as well as Franky does! To find out more about responsible pet ownership, please visit: www.petsforlife.com.sg

Make sure windows are properly meshed and holes are mended to protect our fur friends

Meshing windows and doors My neighbour has a cat. In order not to let the cat escape, they mesh up their doors and windows. It not only keeps her safe but ensures that she would not wander off and get lost. I ‘arf-ed’ in approval.

Entertainment movie review

The Babadook: Take a closer look… if you dare

Are you afraid of the bogeyman? Don’t be – it’s the Babadook you should be worried about Director Jennifer Kent deftly exploits slanted angles and looming interiors to create a discomforting and ominous tone

Warning: Mild spoilers ahead

F

rom the land of giant tarantulas and the danger-infested outback (Australia) comes another reign of terror. The Babadook, written and directed by first-time feature writer Jennifer Kent, tells of a widow Amelia (Essie Davis) and her problem child Samuel (Noah Wiseman) haunted by a sinister presence in their home. Samuel’s sixth birthday is coming up and it coincides with his father’s death anniversary. Amelia struggles to cope as Samuel’s disruptive behaviour worsens and she finds herself breaking from the stress. It may sound like the same overused, tired horror movie plot. But, I assure you, there is nothing that previous horror films can do to prepare you for this one. First you hear three knocks. Then a low, guttural growl announcing the arrival of the Babadook. He stalks in the shadows; an imposing figure with long black claws and a pale face, he looks a bit like the infamous Slenderman. But that’s not the real horror of The Babadook.

Is the horror real or imagined?

Naturally, Samuel wants to vanquish the Babadook, so he makes these really cool contraptions to protect Amelia. But not only does his mother not believe him, she also distances herself from him – to her, he’s the harbinger of her husband’s death. The option of parental comfort is removed and instead the mother is slowly turned into an unreliable and even threatening figure. This is a child’s worst nightmare and, in this moment, I swear we were all horrified children.

light and deafening audio in the climax were too dramatic, conflicting with the previous subtle brilliance. And while some viewers may be able to claw past this sudden change and arrive at the symbolism behind the ending, it might be too far-fetched for others. Also, the Babadook literally falls flat and lets out a defeated groan like a child refusing to go to bed. Oh well, all good things must come to an end. And, as the scaredy-cat that I am: boy, was I glad when this horrifying one ended.

Disappointing Ending

The Babadook [NC16] Director: Jennifer Kent Starring: Essie Davis & Noah Wiseman Genre: Horror Run Length: 94 min Release: 25 Sep

However, after the movie has exhausted its armoury of artistic tricks, The Babadook just falls flat on its face. The over-the-top blinding white

By Pamela Chow

You’re Scaring Yourself The creature itself isn’t the top scare. Instead, the movie uses subtle tactics to spook you into fear and anxiety. There’s the dull lack of lighting inside the house that creates questionable dark corners. The camera shifts at odd angles, drags through long takes and cuts abruptly. Then there are shapes hiding in the background that resemble the monster – I got goose bumps when I spotted them. There are no cheap scares or screamers. The movie’s artistic direction goads you into believing there’s one creeping around the corner, keeping you on edge. In the same way the horrors may all just be in Amelia’s mind, they are also in your own imagination.

Childhood Ruined

The Babadook tells of a widow, Amelia, and her child, Samuel, who are haunted by a sinister presence in their home

The movie particularly succeeds in taking every child’s worst fears and amplifying them to the extreme. The Babadook is first introduced with a children’s pop-up book. It looks innocent enough but as the pages are turned, the illustrations get more violent and menacing. It’s a fairy tale come true in the worst way – the monster has come alive.

weekender.com.sg Marton Csokas’ portrayal of the mob boss is the perfect ribbon on this nicely-packaged film

Denzel Washington serves up vengeance on a cold, vicious platter and we’re lapping it up All man may be created equal, but not all are punished equally. Robert McCall’s (Denzel Washington) history is as violent as they come but he has buried that hatchet and now works at a hardware store. So he lives as an average guy with an average job. But his jimmies are rustled when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz of Kick-Ass and If I Stay), a young lady blackmailed by the mafia into prostitution. And now the nice guy with the bright smile is cracking noses and skulls within record time.

As Seen on TV The Equalizer borrows its title and vigilante premise from a 1980s TV series but the similarities stop there. Director Antoine Fuqua (Olympus Has Fallen, Training Day) goes to town with the grisly details, morphing everyday objects into horrifying instruments of torture. Fuqua is also all about the whole “equalizing” aspect of McCall’s actions, using the character to advocate for equality and balance in the world. But with such generous amounts of wicked bloodshed, our impression of normal items like corkscrews may instead end up becoming… imbalanced.

Damsel in Distress Complementing Washington’s demeanour as the calm and cool hero, Moretz delivers a chilling performance as a young woman dolled up for all the wrong reasons.

The Equalizer: Twisted & action-packed justice “(The Equalizer) doesn’t glorify prostitution nor make it cotton-candy,” Moretz explained. “The focus isn’t on her profession but who she is as a person,” she said. It’s a thinly-veiled commentary on the reality and terror of illegal human trafficking rings and the casting of babyfaced Moretz in this role makes this message all the more striking.

Villain Extraordinaire

but this time his role is different from his previous incarnations. For the sociopathic Teddy, the New Zealand actor adopted a unique Cockney accent and invented an entire history spanning England and London. Csokas said, “Remember, he’s a sociopath, so he can be anything to anybody.” But we’re pretty sure that to The Lord of the Rings fans, he’ll always be a royal elf.

The Equalizer [M18] Director: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Denzel Washington, Chloë Grace Moretz, Marton Csokas & David Harbour Genre: Action, Thriller Run Length: 132 min Release: 25 Sep

McCall’s witch-hunt leads him straight to the lair of a Russian ring, crowned by Teddy (Marton Csokas). Csokas is known for his frequent portrayal of head honchos

An armpit Yak & Crow selfie contest forces us to examine if we’re a nation of prudes We solemnly swear to yak about local hot-topic issues or crow about our opinions on Singaporean culture

The recent armpit hair selfie contest that stormed the online world has created much controversy and shoved a private matter right in our faces – what’s your stand? In recent months, a bizarre armpit hair selfie craze has swept over Weibo, the popular Chinese microblogging platform. Thousands of young women, who looked otherwise well put-together, proudly uploaded selfies displaying their, ahem, unshaven armpits.

Brouhaha over Our Bodies’ Bushy Bits As they raised their arms, netizens raised their eyebrows. Some gagged while others applauded the movement. Those in favour claimed that it “revolutionised stereotypes”. Weibo user @Alicey said, “Why are girls forced to shave? We need to advocate for change.” Another user @NewForcesOfCulture said, “Natural beauty is true beauty.” When I told my friends that I found the online armpit hair selfies to be downright gross and too in-your-face, I received mixed (and heated) reactions.

Despite our growing acceptance of fellow Singaporeans with tattoos and facial piercings, many of us still found the endless stream of hairy armpit selfies unsavoury and unacceptable. My male colleague concurs, “Maybe ‘repulsive’ is too strong a word but I found the Weibo contest to be… distasteful.” Sylvia, who self-identifies as an emerging feminist, chides me, “Come on, aren’t you being a prude? It’s the 21st Century!” She adds, “Feminism started with braburning. It’s only a matter of time that trends recur and women feel the need to make a loud, unmistakable statement about what they stand for. Let them be!” I have to admit, Sylvia makes sense. On the Internet, sentiments are more often hollered than whispered. Attempts to raise social awareness have not always been intelligent or successful but new memes are guaranteed to continue sprouting anyway. We didn’t bat an eyelash at the scores of people who did the Ice Bucket Challenge for the sheer fun of getting drenched, so why not lighten up about the armpit hair selfie contest too?

To Shave or Not to Shave? The hype over the controversial contest has died down but the question remains — should women be expected to shave? Opinions are divided. Many women have been choosing to liberate themselves from shaving without raising a ruckus (or their arms in front of a camera). Candice from Michigan says, “I used to

Some of the brazen armpit selfies that inundated Weibo (Photos: swaggernewyork.com)

labour over shaving and waxing during my early twenties, when I was just following social norms. These days, I’ve stopped being a slave to social pressure. I don’t shave and I wear whatever I want.” For some, hair removal can be empowering. Amy, an executive in her forties who’s single, says, “I shave or wax almost everywhere but only for myself. I feel sexier that way.” For many I know, shaving comes down to a practical, personal choice. While body hair itself isn’t “dirty” per se, given Singapore’s hot and humid weather, one tends to develop body odour faster if unshaven. Joe, an IT guy in his thirties, is practical about the hairy issue, “Body hair isn’t going to be a deal-breaker when I’m dating. Hairy is okay, stinky isn’t.” Hear, hear!

Trendsetters vs. Laggards Have you wondered why grown women are expected to sport smooth, silky skin all over when it’s perfectly natural for body hair to sprout upon puberty? Big names such as Julia Roberts and Britney Spears have unabashedly allowed themselves to be photographed with their arms raised while exposing their fine crops of armpit hair. Perhaps the women posting their selfies on Weibo are in fact trendsetters taking a cue from those celebrities. It’s easy to stay unshaven and hide under a cardigan but it takes guts to put your body hair on display for the whole world. Trends come and go, and just as there are trendsetters, there are laggards too. To all who have found the Weibo contest tasteless or repulsive, I dare ask, “Could there be a prude in you?” By Runbin Yew Why do you think society expects women (or men) to shave? Do you think exposing body hair is a trend that’s here to stay? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a comment at www.weekender.com.sg/ post-weekender-website/ now!

6 things you ought to know about Sungei Road Thieves’ Market because soon it will be no more 3. Sungei Road area was also known as Kek Sng Kio Sungei Road Thieves’ Market, the original flea market in Singapore established in the 1930s, will be paved over to make way for the Sungei Road MRT station expected to be completed by 2017. That’s more than 80 years of history eradicated in one fell swoop. Nonetheless, here are 6 things you ought to know about Sungei Road Thieves’ Market:

1. Peddlers aren’t supposed to sell brand-new items Peddlers are not required to pay rent, but on the condition that they cannot sell brand-new items. This rule is official but it is uncertain how the authorities actually enforce it.

The Singapore Ice Works was built in the 1930s and situated near the road, which explains why that area is also fondly known as Kek Sng Kio, which literally means Frosted Bridge. The factory was torn down in the mid-1980s.

4. There used to be fiercer turf wars As space is limited, things can get heated. The flea market has been downsized before in July 2011, where half its space had to make way for the new Jalan Besar MRT Station. But even before this, peddlers were known to spray paint the tarmac ground to demarcate their designated area. Nowadays, each of the allocated metreby-metre space is on a first-come-firstserve basis.

5. Sungei Road produced millionaires Pang Lim, 57, who is the Managing Director of food court chain Koufu, was an illegal fruit seller in Sungei Road for five years in the 1970s. He saved enough money to rent a coffee shop in 1990 with his younger brother and uncle, and later rented out the stalls to other hawkers. The business took off and Koufu was born out of that one coffee shop.

6. Opium was still a thing in Singapore in the 1970s 2. Sungei means “river” Sungei Road got its name because it runs along the banks of the Rochor River (Sungei Rochor).

In the early 1970s, opium dens were common in the Sungei Road area. Opium addicts were mainly the poor, elderly people from the working class who sought the drugs out as a form of escape.

or maybe I’m just bad at cooking. I’m now relatively sure that I will never be satisfied with plain noodles again.

French Update for Brunch The brunch menu has been given a French update with the introduction of the tartine, an open-faced sandwich that is part of the quintessential French breakfast. I liked the Victorien Sardou ($25), a gruyere and lobster chunk tartine with tomatoes atop a slice of crisp baguette. It is cheesy, tart and comforting at the same time. If you’re gluten-intolerant, you can order the Turkish ($25) which is imam bayildi – an eggplant sauté – and pine nuts and mint. The gluten-free version comes on a slice of eggplant instead of bread. The regular serving features pita bread. Also not to be missed are the sweet tartines such as the Marie Antoinette ($20), an almond bostock brioche served with a side of prune and Almagnac ice cream.

Dining Updates The main dining menu at The Disgruntled Chef also sees some changes with the introduction of dishes such as the Beet-cured King Salmon ($18) with gin-infused cucumbers and horseradish mustard. Also try the Seared Scallop Carpaccio ($18) topped with ikura, konbu, lime and soy brown butter. The restaurant’s new take on its signature Crackling Suckling Pig ($68) comes with sauerkraut puree and mustard seeds, which help cut through the fatty and crispy suckling pig. All in all, I like the new update. The Disgruntled Chef, 26B Dempsey Road, Singapore 247693, Tel: 6476 5305 By Cheryl Chia

Still loading, and loading Because the hotpot is pure collagen based, it takes a while to melt into the soup. First & only collagen hotpot buffet We visit the newest Momiji Shabu Shabu at Shaw Balestier and we are sold! Who knew collagen could taste so good? The brand new Momiji Shabu Shabu just opened its doors and promises a wonderful gourmet experience. This is where you can indulge in Singapore’s first-ever collagen hotpot buffet at affordable prices. Enjoy an array of over 100 items such as various shabu shabu meat, seafood, sushi, fish balls, bamboo meat paste, vegetables, pastries, desserts and more!

An assortment of noodles & more Look at how gorgeous everything is! I tried one serving of each noodle selection available and I love the dried noodles the most. The ramen goes a little strange with hotpot

Food on a stick, seafood on a bamboo stick You have to try this – seafood portions that you can choose to cook sparingly by using a little scoop spoon provided or, like me, by just pouring the whole chunk in. I liked their fish paste stick the best. It is very soft and a little salty and goes perfectly with the sesame sauce. The cuttlefish one comes a close second.

Who said size doesn’t matter? I never liked prawns – too much effort for too little meat. So imagine my joy when I saw these. These are only available at certain times of the day so you have to try this if you’re lucky enough! Momiji Shabu Shabu is running a promotion now where for every two persons who dine in, customers will get a complimentary premium item of either Wagyu beef or snow crab. I chose the snow crab in a heartbeat. It was supremely soft and savoury. I chose not to cook it in the soup and ate it as it is, dipped in their array of specialty sauces, and it didn’t disappoint. Coffee & more at JBM One Raffles Place Mall has a new restaurant with the opening of JBM Coffee & Dining One Raffles Place Mall has seen a bright and airy facelift with stores such as H&M opening in the shopping centre. The food wing is not neglected either, with the addition of JBM Coffee & Dining. The menu features rustic French and Italian cuisine by Chef Chamara Fonseka, who was previously with Au Petit Salut and Covelli. The coffee creations are helmed by Shaw Shyne Wei, who was the first runner-up at Singapore’s National Latte Art Championship 2014. Talk about fancy!

CBD Lunches Lunchtime is quite busy for JBM, with the business crowd in the area. When we were there, business was bustling! The food names reflect the young team

with playful menu names such as Lil’ Froggy ($24). It is lightly-seasoned and seared frog legs atop a bed of butter lettuce. It also comes with a mini cocotte of handmade mushroom ravioli in veal jus. The Green Knight ($8) is a zucchini soup with seaweed, croutons and a drizzle of cream for richness. It is also a great starter for a rainy day with its comforting quality. The Pork Terrine ($15) is homemade and comes with three slices of brioche coated with grape mustard seeds. The mustard seeds have a heady flavour from the soaking in grapes, giving it a sweeter flavour.

Filling Mains I loved the Beef Outside the Cubes ($24), which is essentially grain-fed tenderloin cut into cubes, grilled medium-rare and tossed in a mushroom sauce. It comes with either mashed potato or French fries. A far cry from the tough and chewy beef cubes used in Chinese cooking, the tenderloin cubes are medium rare, chewy and juicy. I would advise picking the mashed potato since it goes oh-so-well with the mushroom sauce and the beef jus. You should also try the Sassy Cassoulet ($32) if you like beans. This French stew features white beans and assorted seafood, which can be shared by two. And what’s a visit to JBM without coffee? The JBM Espresso Crème Brulee ($8) is a dessert and beverage rolled into one with a shot of espresso topped with crème brulee. JBM also does a mean piccolo. Japanese & Spanish Collaboration by Bincho & Moosehead Bincho and Moosehead fuse Japanese and Spanish cooking techniques and ingredients to bring three exciting new dishes Collaborating together for the first time are Chef Asai Masashi of Bincho and Chef Manel Valero of Moosehead Kitchen Bar, melding two different cuisines and cooking techniques to create a brand new interpretation of their favourite dishes.

The Best of East Meets West From Oct 1 to 31, diners at both Bincho and Moosehead will be able to sample these three new interpretations of dishes at Bincho and Moosehead. At Bincho, Chef Asai will be transforming three of Chef Manel’s dishes – chargrilled asparagus with leeks and garlic miso, chargrilled octopus with red pepper and lime, and crispy spiced pig’s ears, while Chef Manel will be putting his spin on three of Chef Asai’s — beef tongue, chicken tsukune, and pacific saury fish at Moosehead. Having enjoyed dining at each other’s restaurant, Chef Manel and Chef Asai came upon the idea of each creating an interpretation of their favourite dishes. Both chefs are grounded in similar styles, with a philosophy that focuses on global, freestyle flavours — believing that excellent, seasonal ingredients play an important role in allowing a dish to reach its maximum potential. What sets them apart is their cooking skills and techniques hailing from their homelands.

Savoury Interpretations to Salivate Over Each chef brings his individual culinary expertise to the table, sharing and learning from each other to extend their repertoire of culinary creativity for the enjoyment of patrons. A highlight is the octopus, a challenging ingredient to work with. Available at Laneige boutiques and counters.

Need a quick fix? Sephora’s Natural Therapy Mask ($4 for one) comes in colourful capsules and with ingredients such as green tea, avocado, rose, lingzhi and more to suit any skin type. I liked the green tea one for its clarifying properties. Place the capsule in the fridge to cool down the mask for a more relaxing experience. Available at Sephora.

Impressive both in size and look, the master bedroom comes with a walk-in wardrobe that can easily pass off as a fashion boutique space

All on Show The attention to detail is carried through into the master bedroom, which looks like it came straight from the pages of a magazine. Impressive both in size and look, the bedroom comes with a walkin wardrobe that can easily pass off as a fashion boutique space. Most significantly, illuminated open shelves by the side were designed specifically for the owner’s collection of limited edition Nike shoes.

Differing Views The most interesting feature in the living area is found on the ceiling, where Jack customised a light feature that is really an abstraction of the owner’s name. Much thought also went into the TV console that has been repositioned against a backdrop of the city view from the 17th floor.

“We didn’t want to block the view, so we went with three slim stainless steel bands as a support for the TV,” says Jack.

White Wash “While the client didn’t have any specific requests, he did tell us what he didn’t want: anything raw, woody or industrial. But other than that, he gave us a free hand in the design,” says Jack. The entire room adopts a pristine white colour scheme that has been applied to both furniture and finishes. “A white colour scheme can feel very cold, so we included softer finishes,” Jack explains. These come in the form of cushioned wall panels that line the sides of the living area, as well as soft drapery.

For the bachelor who stays in this apartment at The Trillium, home is a place where one can truly enjoy the luxuries of life. It naturally follows that his home, designed by Jack Chan of Neu Konceptz, embodies swankiness and posh sophistication complete with plush finishes and unique details.

when neat and tidy, a built-in bookcase by the side ensures everything has its place. Across from all this, dark-tinted mirrors underline the sophisticated, masculine feel in the room.

When it comes to craftsmanship, there are few continents in the world that compare to Asia’s rich and diverse traditions in making furniture. Our visit to the International Furniture Fair Singapore turned up a new generation of Asian names who are harnessing age-old skills that have been sitting right in their backyard all this while.

KIMU

Based in Taiwan, KIMU is a young design firm run by Kelly Lin, Seah Yeh and Ketty Shih. One of its most notable designs is The New Old Light, a simple lampshade that is a mash up of the traditional Chinese paper lantern and a strong industrial style. The quality of light can be controlled by expanding or contracting the paper folds. www.kimudesign.com

Craft in Asia

The guest bedroom comes cloaked in a darker palette that gives the room a lounge-like appeal. Jack pushed the bed up against the bay window to make the most of the available space. As a result, steps had to be incorporated to accommodate the platform bed concept. And, like all the other rooms in the apartment, the floor is carpeted for a plush feel underfoot.

Helmed by Abie Abdillah, Studiohiji is bringing rattan furniture firmly into the 21st Century. The Pretzel Bench is a fine example of this, with its contemporary form and sensuous curves made from traditional rattanweaving techniques. 7) Sydney is the capital of Australia a) True b) False Answer: B. Sydney is quite often mistaken as the capital of Australia. The nondescript city of Canberra is the capital for political reasons. Essentially, to make Sydney and Melbourne stop squabbling, Canberra was crowned the national capital in 1908. Hanoi is full of beautiful Vietnamese and French colonial architecture, such as the Hanoi History Museum

Trendy Bangkok? Think Thong Lor! Part 2 of 2 Former DJ Shareen Wong is back to share with you more travel tips, and she highlights some of the most happening places in Thong Lor, Bangkok You may have been to Bangkok quite a few times now. Are you looking to experience some cool new places? In Part 2 of our Thong Lor guide, I bring you more things to see and do.

Seenspace 13 This place is best described as the Bangkok equivalent of Holland Village but occupying a much smaller space. Hop on a motorcycle outside Exit 3 of the Thonglor BTS and it’s on your left once you turn into Soi 13. The first thing that hits you is the open courtyard that’s shared by three to four restaurants and bars like Fat’R Gut’z, which is known for its fish and chips, and Clouds, which has an interesting cocktail menu and décor to match.

Head upstairs to one of my favourite brunch places – Roast. The menu is designed to resemble a newspaper and offers a good variety of yummy-looking items for lunch or dinner. The pulled pork burger and crab cakes are good and you’ll want to leave room for dessert. The place has a nice, chill vibe with its mismatched chairs and sofas and a mixed crowd of expats and locals. Reservations are recommended. Seenspace 13, Thonglor Soi 13

The humble Pad Thai is one of the yummiest dishes you can find in Thailand

The Iron Fairies A jazz bar inspired by a fairy tale book written by its owner? The Iron Fairies is easily Bangkok’s most intriguing (jazz) bar. You’re greeted by rows of medicine (or is it fairy dust?) bottles outside which don’t look like much. But once you’ve stepped into the dark, broody bar it does feel magical. Owned by Ashley Sutton, a former Australian blacksmith, the bar is designed to look like an ironsmith’s workshop. Once your eyes get accustomed to the dark, you’ll start to admire the gargoyles, fiends and fairies hovering above you. Come for the cocktails, the band and the experience. You might find yourself tempted by the massive burgers. The Iron Fairies, 394 Soi Thonglor, Sukhumvit 55, Tel: +66 99 918 1600

Food Street Sukhumvit Soi 38 It might sound far off but Soi 38 actually is just across the road from Thong Lor BTS. Don’t expect a gathering of hawkers similar to Newton Circus or Lau Pa Sat in Singapore. Instead there are probably no more than 20 street vendors here serving up pretty tasty nosh. At the start of the street to your right, down a little alleyway, look out for the “Pad Thai Champion of the World”! This guy has

taken part in Pad Thai competitions and emerged champion, and you can taste why. His dish is filled with fresh seafood, including chunks of crab meat, and his noodles are perfectly cooked. It’s also not too cloyingly sweet as most Pad Thais can be. Second to the Pad Thai are the ripe, juicy mangoes and sticky rice. Stroll a little further down and you’ll find a porridge stall where you can customise your porridge anyway you like. I had mine with sliced pork, salted and century eggs (they give you whole eggs) and it was one of the best “chok”s I’ve had! If you’re not too stuffed, walk a little further down and you’ll see a noodle cart serving Thai-style wanton mee with dumplings and crab meat!
