GoGoVan: Trail-blazing app leads the way in logistic solutions GoGoVan gets your goods moving within clicks

If you ever had to shift huge items such as furniture but lacked convenient transportation options, take heed of GoGoVan, a mobile app landing in Singapore GoGoVan’s extensive fleet expedites dispatch services

GoGoVan at a Glance A variety of services available: • General transportation • Courier/delivery • House/office moving • Passenger van (12-seater) Features users can benefit from: • Reserve a vehicle and driver with just a few clicks • Round-the-clock access to delivery services • Track the driver’s location and route taken • Peace of mind, as all drivers are legally verified and screened • Option to rate the driver’s service • Insurance coverage for damaged or lost items* *T&Cs apply

How to Use GoGoVan in 3 Easy Steps You can easily download this FREE GoGoVan app from the App Store (iPhone users) or Google Play (Android users). Step 1 — Select the service and key in the route (the fee will be reflected) Step 2 — Set the date and time Step 3 — Enter your information and place the order instantly GoGoVan will use GPS to locate drivers around your pickup point. Then, a driver will call you to confirm and accept your delivery order.

Dispatch Services at Your Fingertips, Anytime, Anywhere GoGoVan is a start-up that taps on crowdsourcing to meet logistics needs. It is the first mobile app in Singapore to offer on-demand delivery services round the clock. With just a few clicks, the app connects users to a wide network of drivers anytime, anywhere. This nifty app works pretty much the same way as taxi-booking apps, which link you to the nearest vehicle via GPS tracking. Once a driver has accepted your order, you can see the driver’s contact number and license plate.

Easy, User-Friendly & HassleFree Unlike most traditional delivery companies, which require advance booking, GoGoVan gets things moving within hours. The GoGoVan app is user-friendly, hassle-free and flexible. You can use it to order a vehicle transport immediately, or

schedule one. GoGoVan’s fleet includes motorcycles, vans, lorries and trucks. Its network of 2,500 drivers will help users move any type and quantity of goods, from documents to parcels to furniture.

Empowering Logistics Service Providers With GoGoVan, drivers and vehicle owners no longer have to depend on inefficient classified ads and traditional call centres to access people who require delivery services. Drivers can respond in real time, get the job done much faster, and thus increase their earnings. Any driver with a valid licence and clean driving record is eligible to join the GoGoVan network. GoGoVan also carries out vehicle inspections to ensure quality delivery services.

A Successful Start-up with Proven Track Record Hailing from Hong Kong, GoGoVan was launched in July 2013 and has bagged several awards, including Hong Kong ICT Award’s Best Mobile App 2014 and Hong Kong Famous Brands. By August this year, GoGoVan has completed a US$6.5 million Series A funding round. Centurion Private Equity led the round, which also includes a number of prominent Singapore-based businessmen. GoGoVan will use the funds to further accelerate growth and broaden its platform offerings. In its country of origin, GoGoVan provides its customers with access to over 18,000 registered commercial vehicles, making it the frontrunner of commercial fleets there.

The company is currently working with corporate clients including Kerry Logistics, SF Express and DHL and it has processed more than one million transactions with a total value of over $120 million Hong Kong dollars (about $15.5 million), with 300,000 transactions per month in Hong Kong. In June this year, GoGoVan launched its delivery services in Singapore and has added over 2,000 vehicles to its platform within a few weeks. Steven Lam, co-founder and CEO, said, “In Hong Kong, within nine months of our launch in July 2013, we captured close to 50 per cent of the independent logistics providers. We are confident we will achieve the same result in Singapore.”

F1 concert review

J Lo the biggest attraction

Let’s admit it – F1’s biggest headline this year was on J Lo’s butt Nothing drew a bigger crowd than J Lo. It was well into the night when Lewis Hamilton was crowned the winner of this year’s F1 Singapore GP and the spirits were high. Following the victory announcement, Jennifer Lopez finally came on with the 60,000-strong audience joining together in unison with hysterical screams. J Lo started with her favourites “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” and “Ain’t It Funny” but, honestly, she could sing Poland’s national anthem and I would still fall over myself running to her concert. The 45-year-old (who doesn’t look so) has proven that age has nothing on her, with dance moves Shakira would envy and a body any woman would kill for.

Lewis Hamilton is new king of the road

Baby got Back

Lewis Hamilton finishes the F1 Singapore GP in a stunning victory

A flurry of outfit changes later, J Lo was powering through “Booty” with a delightful showcase of her excellent twerking. I think the screams of the fans almost rivalled the decibels of the F1 race cars. The live feed camera got its target and it was definitely at J Lo’s back (or lower). She stopped in between sets to lovingly catch up with the audience, telling us that, “I remember the last time I was here in Singapore, we were dancing in the rain, and it was one of my favourite moments of the tour.” Aww we love you too, J Lo!

For the race or the music? We could not have asked for a better wrap up of this year’s F1 Singapore GP. Our only surprise was how the audience seemed much more fired up for J Lo’s concert than Hamilton’s victory. Is F1 losing its magic? Nonetheless, we look forward to next year’s races with hopefully even bigger performances. Can someone bring Nicki Minaj in already? I’m dying to see the crowd lose it when she performs Anaconda.

While Nico Rosberg didn’t finish the race, Mercedez teammate Lewis Hamilton triumphed

J Lo was undoubtedly the biggest star and, age or otherwise, her figure was still the talk of the town

THE BIG EVENT

John Legend 1, Haze 0 In a lazy, hazy show, John Legend’s “All of Me” came out tops

Unique, customised weddings

will accommodate any date change request for up to 60 days after signing up (subject to availability of date). There will be no additional cost or penalty.

The crowd was vastly disengaged with his performance and most of the onlookers got bored after a while and went to other zones.

Tailor your own UNIQUE wedding Perhaps you have not found the whole package you’re looking for - your groom may want a themed ice sculpture and you may be looking at floral aisles. Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre has wedding packages that you can pick and choose specific items that you want. While customisable, it is all at a fixed price. There will be no hidden charges!

The Best We Ever Heard

The haze visibly worsened when John Legend came on but his performance made it all worth it It did not look so good, initially. Before John Legend’s set, we overheard a lot of people complaining about the haze and some even making plans to leave if the air didn’t clear soon. But when John Legend was introduced, they quietened down, and he took over from then on. John started his set with a bunch of songs that are from his new album, which pretty much meant most of us were unfamiliar with them. The first set was full of a lot of slow, out-of-tune hum alongs.

The Formula One Singapore Grand Prix event concluded spectacularly last weekend. This year’s F1 Concerts were more starstudded than ever with Mando-pop Kings Mayday putting on a rocking performance, John Legend’s soulful crooning and J Lo’s high-spirited performance that perfectly capped the F1 weekend. In the main event, Lewis Hamilton won this year’s F1 Singapore GP night race by a three-point lead, in an exciting finish that had us all on the edge of our seats. The win was sweeter as this has been a problematic season for the Brit driver. Hamilton even managed a laugh when asked if he was sorry that his Mercedez teammate, Nico Rosberg, did not finish the race. He quipped that the extra points were of great help to him. For many spectators, seeing a different winner was a sight for sore eyes, as was J Lo.

I became a fan of “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)”, one of the songs he played that did catch my ear. I did think the slow tunes were a strange, stark contrast to the lightning-fast race that was due to start later on in the evening but it was refreshing to catch my breath amid his soft, soothing crooning. Most of the crowd had slowly dispersed, by the time they realized John was not going to perform his wonder hit so early into his set. I overheard one person saying, “Damn, he is really nothing without ‘All of Me’”. I mean, all of me is really bored by the rest of him.”

But it was Worth It Eventually, he did deliver his mega hit only after the skies turned dark. The audience happily lapped up the song, with some swaying slowly along to his piano-playing and luring vocals. We saw a lot of lit phones raised in the air and many excitedly singing along to their favourite verses of the song. What a perfect note he ended on to set the tone for a lovely evening. By Nicole Lee

RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER

Will Cesc Fabregas lead the Blues to victory against his former club?

Juicy reviews & tips on the EPL & the best of world football

Wounded Gunners face relentless Blues Chelsea welcomes Arsenal to Stamford Bridge in this weekend’s big clash. Can the Gunners somehow find a way to stop the rampaging Blues?

Photo: Laszlo Szirtesi / Shutterstock.com

Talk about entertainment in the Barclay’s Premier League. Last weekend saw a phenomenal number of jawdropping goals from the likes of Steven Gerrard, Phil Jagielka, Wayne Rooney, Eden Dzeko, Graziano Pelle and Charlie Austin. Caught your breath yet? Because this weekend will be another breathless affair, with Chelsea vs Arsenal headlining the football action.

The Big Match: Chelsea vs Arsenal (Sun, 9.05pm) Chelsea and Arsenal might be the only two unbeaten sides left in the Premier League, but their form coming into the match cannot be any more contrasting. The Blues look relentless in their title pursuit with a three-point lead at the top of the table, with five wins and

a draw, after only six matches in. The Gunners, on the other hand, only have two wins out of six, and are wounded. Captain Mikel Arteta and talisman Aaron Ramsey are out, while Jack Wilshere is a major doubt coming into the game. Add these to the long-term absentees, Mathieu Debuchy, Olivier Giroud and even Theo Walcott, and it means that the Gunners have it all to do in this tie. Now, add all this to the unsavoury reminder that the last time the Gunners visited Stamford Bridge, they suffered a 6-0 thrashing. Not to forget, a certain Cesc Fabregas will be facing his former club, so it just might be a very long evening for the Arsenal faithful. Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Arsenal Other Matches:

Liverpool vs West Brom Without a win since the start of the season, the Baggies have now won three games in the span of a week, having beaten Tottenham, Hull City (Capital One Cup) and Burnley. Liverpool, on the other hand, has not won its last three Premier League matches, having lost to Aston Villa and West Ham before the Merseyside derby draw against Everton. All to do for the Reds, and they need to be at their best to see off a confident West Brom side. Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 West Brom By Ahmad Khan Tune in to Red Card Sports on StarHub TV Ch 225 or download the “StarHub TV Anywhere” app.

Manchester United vs Everton This is a huge test for Manchester United as Everton did a remarkable double over them last season. Then again, many other clubs did the same too. But it’s a different United this time round, plus the Toffees haven’t started the season well themselves. It all depends on how United’s kamikaze defending copes with the might of Romelu Lukaku. Plus, they have to do it without club captain and former Everton boy Wayne Rooney, who was sent off in the last game. Prediction: Manchester Utd 2-1 Everton

FLuFFY’s PEt TIPS

Friendly advice on caring for your furry friends Part 1 of 8

Sonja Steinmetz is known for her lively and cheerful personality

What do you enjoy doing on your off-time? I love travelling and going on adventures. I did my first solo trip this year to New Zealand. I enjoyed it so much, I’ll be heading there again in November to try bungee jumping and climbing a volcano.

As a morning show host you need to get perked up in the wee hours. What are some of your favourite morning pick-me-ups? I definitely need to snooze at least twice after my alarm has rung. A strong cup of black coffee is essential, and a good tune to get you going. Right now, I’m really digging “Boom Clap” by Charli XCX.

What has been your strangest request? The other day I got an SMS saying a listener wanted to propose to me. I had no idea who it was. They didn’t leave their name and seeing as I had never met the person, the answer was, sadly for him, no.

Sonja co-hosts with Jason Tan and Jamie Yeo

Get to know more personally this DJ babe from Power 98FM’s “Power Breakfast Show” Sonja Steinmetz is known for her sprightly personality, her unique and striking appearance, and for being one of the babes on Power 98FM’s daily “Power Breakfast Show”. We catch up with her and find out more about her, especially a few things that many listeners and fans might not know.

How do you feel about your cohosts on the Power Breakfast Show? It’s been four years now, doing the show, and two years with Jamie Yeo. The both of us have a really good working relationship; it’s easy, breezy and intuitive. Jason Tan joined us in March this year and we’re happy to have him on board. He may not be so happy though because we tease him mercilessly. But only because he can take it!

What do you think you bring to the show, or to the team? I’m fearless, have a unique way of expressing myself and my bubbly and effervescent personality is perfect for waking up our listeners with a smile. Clearly, I am also very humble.

What’ve you been up to of late? Anything interesting or aside from radio? I just got a mole on my nose removed. It’s been with me for 32 years and I’ve finally decided to get rid of it. I never thought I’d have something in common with Enrique Iglesias!

What kind of guy would you date, or would catch your eye? I’m a sucker for blue eyes, and guys with tattoos and facial hair but beyond the superficial, having a good sense of humour and being comfortable in his own skin is key.

Which song(s) do you sing in the bathroom? I’m a fan of indie artists and bands and at the moment any song by FKA Twigs, Banks or Jessie Ware. But I’ve also got a soft spot for Katy Perry. Her songs “Dark Horse” and “Firework” are my favourite of hers to sing in the bathroom.

Where’s the most unusual or unique place that you’ve travelled to? How so? I was in Spain last year for a friend’s wedding. It was in a church that was hundreds of years old, situated on top of a hill within a very mountainous region. It was raining that day so the clouds were very low and the entire church grounds were surrounded by fog. It really added to the atmosphere and I’ll never forget that day.

Don’t be a barking nuisance Tips from Fluffy, the rescued pooch, on caring for your furry friends and being a responsible pet owner

Sometimes my owner Franky would tell me I’m barking too much and it’s disturbing the family and our neighbours. He said that was not being very nice and so I had to learn to bark less. Remove the Motivation to BARK Whenever someone walks past the door, I will get really mad and start barking. I think they’re intruding into my space! Even though Franky reassures me that they aren’t, it simply isn’t helping. Lately, Franky started closing the door when he hears footsteps coming. He also prepares a treat. If I don’t bark as the footsteps pass our door, I get rewarded. This seems easy! I think I can do this!

means I should not be barking. Not barking at the mention of this word “quiet” means something good! Oh my, I’m so excited that learning to be a good pet and neighbour can be so easy, fun and rewarding! KEEPING the pooch tired They say a tired dog is a happy and wellbehaved dog. Franky also helped me realise that I need sufficient exercise everyday, and I even barked less because I was less restless or bored. I’m a small dog with quite a bit of energy. Chasing after a ball and a short walk are enough to tire me out. If you’re an active dog, you may need more exercise or activities to release all that energy! Also, as a treat for obeying Franky’s commands, I got a new chew toy and more healthy treats. Boy, am I one happy pooch! To find out more about responsible pet ownership, visit: www.petsforlife.com.sg

Teaching the “Quiet” Command Once our door is closed, Franky also tells me the word “quiet”. Like I said, if I don’t bark, I get a treat. I’m slowing realising that this word

New mother Mia (Annabelle Wallis) confronts what was once her most cherished doll

Ain’t no doll face: Just the look of Annabelle raises hairs

Annabelle could give Chucky a run for his money as the most terrifying doll, but will she live up to all the hype?

veryone who watched The Conjuring knows who the true star of the show is. The cursed doll, Annabelle, intrigued audiences with her opening act in the successful 2013 horror flick. Now, she’s making her way to our screens for more screams. Annabelle the movie takes us through the horrifying origins of how a rare vintage doll came to be the vessel for a dreadful, demonic spirit. But from what we know about this fearful curse – actually, about all curses in general – this is just the beginning to a long reign of terror.

Annabelle:

No Child’s Play No Child’s Play Unlike her cheery and deceptively adorable design in real life, the doll in Annabelle is given a freaky and malevolent reboot. It’s identical to her original appearance in The Conjuring, giving fans of that movie a smooth transition over to this new story. That also means it gives us no chance to forget how scary The Conjuring was. Given that, Annabelle has a lot of hype to live up to – and we doubt she will disappoint.

There Will Be Blood From the trailer alone, the movie looks extremely promising. Loud scares are

Movie moments you may have missed Many films have hidden meanings or Easter eggs, and you’ve probably missed more than a couple – we revisit a few as a reminder to always watch with eyes wide open Are you a deep thinking film analyst or are you the kind of moviegoer who lets subtler things fly over your head? We re-look at some of these movie moments you shouldn’t have missed.

1. Titanic and the Floating Door

It’s a widely-held opinion that Rose, the wrinkled old woman who left her lover Jack to drown, is the real villain of this tragic story. After the Titanic sinks, Rose manages to drift atop a wooden door. Jack apparently can’t fit on board, so he sinks to the depths of the ocean. But that door clearly looks big enough for the both of them! But what if the door isn’t actually as large as it appears? Fans have pointed out that because Rose is crippled by survivor’s guilt after leaving Jack to the waves, she recalls events differently, probably blaming herself for everything. And that includes remembering the door as being larger than it really was – large enough for her to have saved Jack as well.

2. Inception and the Spinning Top I know this whole movie is one big confusing conundrum, so let’s get to the basics: Cobb invades people’s dreams, so he needs a personal item (a “totem”) to tell him if he’s still dreaming. Many viewers think that Cobb’s totem is a top, as he often seems to use it. If the top falls, he’s back in reality; if it keeps spinning, he keeps dreaming. In the ending, the camera shows the top spinning, then cuts to black. So the biggest question that everyone has is whether our hero is still in a dream or not. But we don’t even need to crack our heads over this – since the top isn’t actually Cobb’s totem. Many people forget what he says: the top was his dead wife’s totem. So what does Cobb use? Fans speculate that it’s actually his wedding ring. If he’s dreaming, he’s wearing it; and when he’s awake, the ring is gone. So, go back and watch the ending again and see for yourself once and for all if he’s still dreaming or not.

3. Harry Potter and the Real Horcruxes If you don’t know what a Horcrux is, I’ll enlighten you. Horcruxes are personal objects that preserve portions of someone’s soul, created through a crazy magic ritual that involves murder. Through this process, the person becomes immortal. In the series, Voldemort (the bald bad guy) places parts of his soul in a variety of things, which the characters go on a sevenmovie-long scavenger hunt for. Renowned writer Stephen King, however, reckons the seven Harry Potter books are also Horcruxes. He once said that the series’ author, JK Rowling, “put a part of her soul in every book and now her books will live forever.” It’s an aww-inspiring thought, until you remember that Rowling would’ve had to kill seven people for those seven Horcruxes. You might want to go through the series again to see who died so that she could live forever.

4. Frozen and Hans It’s the favourite Disney animation of most people who’ve watched it, and I’m here to make it even better.

You know Hans: The prince who sweeps Anna off her feet and who genuinely cares for the starved and freezing citizens of Arendelle but who suddenly turns around and becomes a hardened villain. But do you really know Hans? According to one of Frozen’s writers, Jennifer Lee, Hans is modelled after a mirror – the same mirror that appears in the original Snow Queen tale. Hans actually reflects the emotions of other characters. So when he meets the smitten Anna, he falls in love with her. When he sees the residents of Arendelle caring for one another, he returns the kindness to them.

For more interesting weekend ideas and entertainment stories, like & follow us at www.facebook.com/ weekendersgp And his betrayal of Anna is a reflection of how she feels in her dying moments – hurt and betrayed by her own sister, Elsa. The loveable Olaf seals the deal with his exclamation, “Who is this Hans?” Nobody really knows, because Hans is simply a reflection of everyone else. By Pamela Chow

5 Wrong Reasons To Get Married Couples say “Till death do us part” but are we making the wrong decision? We explore some obvious and subtle reasons to say “I don’t!” According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, for every four marriages in 2013, there is one divorce. Is the institution of marriage falling to pieces? Are couples marrying for the wrong reasons?

REASON 1: HOME OWNERSHIP The allure of jointly purchasing an HDB flat is unique to couples in Singapore. In fact, “Let’s get a flat” has been known to be code for “Will you marry me?” I’m not judging this lot of mostly under-35s; I just wonder if a flat is reason enough to take a dating couple to the stage of sticking through thick and thin for life. I spoke to 26-year-old Samuel (not his real name), who is legally separated from his wife after a two-year marriage, during which they had a baby girl. He admits that their main reason for saying “I do” was to buy an HDB flat to call their own. Does your partner share your values and support your goals? Do you share the same views about family planning? Can your current relationship take the added responsibilities and commitment of marriage? If you have any shadow of doubt, I suggest you forget about the flat first.

REASON 2: THE UNEXPECTED PREGNANCY Despite a couple’s best (or less) effort to prevent pregnancy, let’s face it, accidents do happen. As dreadful as this circumstance may be to some who have not planned or are unready for it, the situation can be made worse by making the wrong decision to marry someone whom you may not know very well. Raising children is a life-long endeavour and it’s essential to find someone compatible.

REASON 3: IMPULSE DECISION Another wrong reason to get married: “I want it, pronto.” It can’t be stressed enough that a marriage involves longterm commitment, something that not all youngsters are ready for. Darcy (not her real name) shares, “I got married at 20 thinking marriage would complete me. But I realised I

School’s out for this 17-year-old girl training to be a Seafarer Officer

didn’t even know what love was!” “My husband and I had little in common, we fought constantly and I was miserable. Eventually, he wanted out first,” she says.

REASON 4: SOCIAL PRESSURE Your social circle exerts influence upon your decision in very subtle but powerful ways. The opinions of friends, parents, and future in-laws all play a part in your decision making process. It’s not uncommon for a person to introduce a partner to friends and family, and vice versa. This creates a social network effect where the couple is expected to stay together. For many people, living up to others’ expectations is important. However, this may result in a poor marriage decision. Resist social pressure. At the end of the day, you have to live with your spouse – not your friends or family.

REASON 5: SKY-HIGH EXPECTATIONS The last wrong reason to get married: Wanting your partner to be the paternal / maternal figure you wished you had, or the ex-partner you miss. While everyone carries some baggage from past relationships, try not to project your unmet needs onto your current partner. An acquaintance of mine had unresolved issues from a past turbulent relationship. Though her friends advised her to seek therapy, she refused. She quickly re-married another guy, but that marriage also ended acrimoniously. This is the sad result of marrying for the wrong reason.

IT’S NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM Though there is one divorce for every four marriages, let’s look at the bright side: The overwhelming majority of couples remain married, have kids and are living happily! So the chances are in your favour if you have the right reasons from the get-go. If you’re married, be grateful for all the moments you spend with your partner. If you’re still looking for one, keep calm and carry on. Good luck! By Runbin Yew

What were you doing when you were 17? 17-year-old Toh Sze Yi looks just like any other teenager, but while most teenagers are fretting over tests and CCAs, Toh is looking sharp in her Seafarer Cadet uniform. In fact, she is on a three-year course to become a Seafarer Officer. Seafarers are what we traditionally know as sailors. They are the men and women who work on ships to ensure the vessels operate smoothly and arrive at their intended destinations in one piece. Instead of choosing maritime courses in the polytechnics, she’s in the seventh cohort of the Tripartite Nautical Training Award (TNTA) Programme, an initiative by the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union. Toh is one of 30 cadets selected out of 300 applicants for the TNTA. Cadets are picked by TNTA partner shipping companies. The companies will employ the cadets once they complete the programme.

A level playing field, qualifications wise As a cadet officer, trainees will draw about US$1,100 in monthly salary, regardless of qualification. Toh holds an N-level certificate. Once cadets complete the TNTA course, they will be promoted to 3rd Officers and their monthly pay will more than double to US$2,500. The Captain, three ranks above a 3rd Officer, earns between US$7,000 to US$20,000.

A Rose Among Thorns Toh is only one of two female cadets of the TNTA’s seventh cohort. When asked how she feels when people view seafaring as an occupation traditionally dominated by males, she said that as long as she puts in the effort to do her job well, gender doesn’t matter. For any teenager, long periods of time away from home and the lack creature comforts such as access to social media would surely put them off seafaring. But for Toh, she is not looking back. “It is everything I wanted to do; I won’t have any regrets,” she said.

hi Li Fang is a popular F&B brand in China with over 20 outlets in Beijing. New to the market, its new hotpot joint at Orchard Central is its first outlet in Singapore. With six different, yummy soup bases and over 40 hotpot ingredient choices, this place is set to be the next hot spot for hotpot.

over 30 heavenly choices of dipping sauces, including Shi Li Fang’s signature sesame sauce. Not to mention, all the sauces are free of charge. Because Shi Li Fang commits to delivering all-natural, healthy, sustainable food, it offers no MSG, no deep-fried, no pan-fried, and no stir-fried dishes. But understanding the various needs of consumers, they started a sauce offering of MSG, which I found very thoughtful especially for eaters like me who simply like more flavour.

I chose their double-flavoured hotpot because I couldn’t decide on just one base. The combination of Tasty Mushroom Soup ($3.60/person) and Tonic Chicken Soup (additional $0.80) that I tried turned out to be splendid. The tonic chicken soup was savoury and immensely flavourful. I kept taking seconds with the ladle and had to keep troubling the staff to top it up for me! Because of the dainty portion, I could finish a single serving. This alleviates the need to ask groups of friends to pool together for hotpot due to the usually large hotpots that most Singapore hotpot spots offer.

Shi Li Fang’s pork tenderloins are succulent and tasty, complementing the sesame sauce and peanuts perfectly. The mushroom soup gave me extra flavour, resulting in a great mouthful of tastes. However, note that the portions are quite generous so you and your “plus-one” could share a plate instead of ordering two. This is the opposite for the specialty chicken I almost had to order another just for myself! Shi Li Fang, Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd, #07-10/11, Singapore 238896

Sustainable agriculture gives us food through natural processes - produce is grown and harvested without affecting organisms and the environment

It’s important to know the source of what you eat – and not just because it may harm you How often do you stop to wonder what exactly you’re eating? Even if you know that your delicious meals aren’t harming you, they might be hurting other communities. So if you consider yourself a foodie, you should definitely put knowledge of sustainable farming on your plate.

Changing the World Sustainable agriculture gives us food through all-natural processes. Such produce is grown and harvested without affecting organisms and their environment, ensuring that the land remains healthy in the long term.

Drink from the Devil’s Cask The limited quantity Bowmore’s Devil’s Casks second batch is a devilish drink Bowmore, Islay’s premier distillery, launches its second release of the sell-out Devil’s Casks series. Matured exclusively – and unusually – in first-fill sherry casks, the second small-batch release of Devil’s Casks is mellower but still packs a punch.

Devil in a Bottle The expression “Devil’s Casks” gets its name from a legend nearly as old as the distillery itself, which commenced in 1779. It was claimed that the Devil was once spotted and chased through the town, eventually hiding in the distillery. After searching for the Devil, he was nowhere to be seen, having made his escape in a whisky barrel. Rachel Barrie, Master Blender, Morrison Bowmore Distillers, says, “The first edition of this expression was one of the most sought after whiskies of 2013. This second small-batch release will no doubt emulate that success thanks to its devilishly tasty dark side, in debt to the first-fill sherry casks it has been carefully mellowed in.”

How to Eat Sustainably

Selfish Gene Café, 40 Craig Road, Singapore 089678

When shopping for groceries, look out for products with labels that declare allnatural sources and processes. If you have any space at home, try growing a small vegetable patch. Limes, tomatoes, curry leaves, and peppermint leaves are some popular starters you can try out. Remember, eating sustainable produce is extra beneficial for us too – it’s not coated in any chemicals, and not pumped with any drugs. Start working these products into your diet for a healthier you. Happy eating!

Have a sweet tooth or prefer something savoury? Looking for somewhere to have a meeting, a tête-à-tête with friends or just want somewhere to lose yourself in a good book? With something for everyone, Selfish Gene Café is sure to appease whatever expectations you have of a perfect breakfast or lunch out. And there is so much to love about sustainable eating and gardening – besides working out your green thumbs, you get to eat what you sow.

I wanted to introduce the same relaxed and laid-back vibe you get from a resort into this home,” he says. The designer also reveals that the wall of mirror panels next to the dining set can be opened to reveal full-height cabinets that are great for storage.

All Natural With balcony windows that open up to an expansive view of the swimming pool, Shian Wei played up the natural component of the design. She replicated the look and feel of a modern resort by using materials that would evoke the rusticity of nature. This includes the rough-hewn stucco wall, the carpet grass on the balcony, and the false wooden beams that line the ceiling.

If your apartment or home has fairly plain or neutral colours or design, it’s perfectly understandable – you may want to keep things simple or have a clean look for your home. At the same time, you may want to sprinkle a little colour or add a dash of quirk to make your home more interesting. Here are three little things that can make a great difference to your apartment or home. Make a splash!

Although the ceiling is only 2.7m tall, the designer split the height of the daughter’s bedroom into two and raised the bed onto the mezzanine level. The entire structure – including the steps and the support beams – was spray-painted white to maintain a clean look. The space beneath the bed houses the daughter’s piano and drum set, as well as a study table, essentially separating the sleeping area from the rest of the room.

Study This A smaller bedroom was converted into a study room, with built-in shelves that go up to the ceiling. A study table was customised to maximise the available floor space. Unlike the rest of the home, the colour scheme here is simpler and more universal.

By The Window Since the bay windows already take up a considerable amount of space in the master bedroom, they were expertly incorporated into the design of the room. The bay window ledge has been cushioned with seats to create a comfortable settee by the window. A movable tea table was also customised to accompany the seating area. By Redzman Rahmat

A whole new level of male grooming

A hot towel wrap preps you for the shave

The shaving brush, an essential tool if you want a clean shave

How does an average Joe upgrade himself to become a hero? This high-street all-male grooming salon has the perfect solution

originally looked too poufy.

Most men underestimate the power of personal grooming but times are changing. Say hello to an emerging breed of men who would go the extra mile to look suave. Where can they head to for the perfect cut-and-shave?

Where Heroes Are Made

Residents can look forward to an array of in-house activities, from swimming lessons to yoga and dance classes

We Need A Hero is a professional maleonly grooming salon on a mission to keep men well-groomed. Services on their comprehensive menu include cut-and-shave, beard design, eyebrowthreading and full-body waxing. We headed to this trendy outlet tucked in Tiong Bahru Estate to experience authentic old-school grooming for ourselves. The Chief Barber, Quester Ng, personally attended to Frank, Weekender’s CEO.

Start Off Squeaky Clean Quester explained that it’s essential to use warm water when shampooing to allow the cuticles to open, the scalp to expand and for cleansing agents to readily penetrate the hair. Next, he used a peppermint conditioner that invigorated the senses and offered a tingling sensation. Finishing off with a cool rinse closes the pores.

Every aspect of Lake Life living aims to give residents a luxurious and exclusive experience

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE Lake Life is located in the hottest address in Singapore – Jurong Lake District, which three months ago was designated as a test bed for Singapore’s initiative to become the world’s first smart city. Innovators, creative forces and top talents have combined their energy and resources to design a one-of-a-kind residence for Singapore’s pioneer ‘smart’ district. For instance, Lake Life is committed to exploring how autonomous vehicles could be integrated into a residential neighbourhood. Plans are under way to provide a driverless shuttle service from the condominium to nearby attractions and transportation hubs, subject to LTA approval. Anticipating a future with electrical cars, the developers of Lake Life are providing a charging station within the residents’ car park.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Lake Life has something for all in the family, including your beloved pooches! There is a dedicated “Pet Run Area” and “Pet Obstacle Zone” where families can walk their dogs and socialise. Sports enthusiasts have a full-sized tennis court, a basketball and futsal half-court. Elderly residents will enjoy dedicated health and fitness zones. For those with green thumbs, Lake Life has incorporated a number of urban farming areas where residents can grow their own crops. Other green spaces include themed gardens – for example, Fragrance, Zen and Chess Gardens. With something for everyone, the whole family will enjoy Lake Life’s facilities to the fullest. For sales enquiries please call 6221 8080 or visit lakelife.sg for more information. Applications open 4 Oct. Show gallery located on Lakeside Drive, next to Lakeside MRT.

Quester then blow-dried Frank’s hair and started deftly snipping away. An industry stalwart who has worked with celebrities, he readily dispensed numerous insiders’ combing and styling tips as he created Frank’s new hairdo. Previously averse to getting his hair buzzed at all costs, Frank decided to give Quester free reign this time. Starting at the base, Quester expertly trimmed off parts of Frank’s crop that

Chief Barber works magic

A Part from the Rest Next, Frank was given an elegant side-parting, a refreshing change from his usual “motorcycle helmet hairstyle”. Quester said it takes at least five days of consistent combing in the right direction for one to maintain a new hair parting. After adding the finishing touches to Frank’s crowning glory, Quester applied some pomade to give the hair a slight sheen and to hold the style. Frank’s looking more charming already!

The Art of Old-school Shaving The shave was next. Firstly, a hot towel was wrapped around Frank’s face for 40 seconds to open the pores. A moisturising lotion was then applied to lubricate the areas to be shaved. While most men just slather on shaving cream haphazardly with their hands, Quester stressed that it’s crucial to use a shaving brush. The bristles of a shaving brush lift the hair away from the skin surface while distributing the shaving cream, thus allowing the blade to cut closer. The first shave was done along the grain (in the direction of the hair growth). The process was then repeated across the grain. The final shave was done against the grain. To end off the shave, a refreshing cold towel was wrapped around Frank’s face. Finally, the aftershave was applied. These meticulous steps ensured that Frank could achieve a clean-shaven look without putting up with much skin irritation. Voila! At the hands of Chief Barber Quester, another hero is groomed. TRAVELation One of the bridges linking the Dolomite peaks

A climber edges across one of the difficult sections of the Via Ferrata

Bucket List Exceptional ideas to experience in your lifetime

The Via Ferrata of Italy’s Dolomite Mountains brings rock-climbing to even greater heights

I

f you love mountains, adventure, and great views, you’re going to love what the Dolomite Mountains have in store for you – if you dare to scale the heights. This towering mountain range in northeastern Italy forms a southern corner along the Alps, with its sheer rock face rising dramatically. At first glance, its steep cliffs look completely unwelcoming even to expert mountaineers. But they are, in fact, safe for anyone to scale. The mountains are fitted with a Via Ferrata – or iron path – that runs throughout the bumps and ridges of the rocky range. For lovers of mountain-climbing, it’s a mustdo; and for the rest of us, the unparalleled view of the magnificent Southern Alps is one that cannot be passed up.

Climbing the Iron Path The Via Ferrata consists of several features to aid climbers in their ascent. For the most part, it is lined by heavy steel cables. With

mountaineering gear, you can latch onto these cords and safely roam the summits. Metal and reinforced wooden bridges link the Dolomites, so climbers can hook onto their railings and, almost literally, walk across on air. The best part is that the Via Ferrata snakes through the entire range, helping climbers reach even the most secluded peaks. Also, with the metal rungs drilled into mountain sides, you can scale the sheer vertical surfaces like one of the cliffclimbing goats.

Sprawling Mountainscape The Dolomites stretch out to more than 90,000 acres, lined by over 130 Via Ferratas, and boast a blend of interesting sights to look out for. The Eastern Dolomites are where most of the Via Ferratas are concentrated, linking the stunning heights of Sentiero Bochette Alte and the Via delle Bocchette Centrali. The Lagazuoi Tunnels in this area are a remnant from World War I to keep an eye out for. The Western Dolomites feature the smaller but equally magnificent Brenta Dolomites. This is home to the most popular route: the Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona. This path takes you through the

remarkable Monte Cristallo Ridge and several WWI ruins. If you’re tired from the trekking, you can rest on two different ski lift rides and stop for a meal and accommodation at a famous lodge. The surface of the Dolomites is a harsh, gleaming white beauty at higher altitudes. However, in the lower terrains, you will find a sudden contrast. Rolling green fields blanket the base of the mountains, dotted by quaint little villages.

Village by the Peaks Like a pristine snow globe, time seems to have stopped in these charming towns. Many of them, especially the Ladinspeaking ones, still preserve remnants of their Roman-colonial culture from the 1st Century. Ladin is a group of northern Italian dialects. In fact, many marks of WWI battles between Italy and the falling AustroHungarian Empire can still be seen in these lands. Trenches, dugouts and other relics line the Via Ferrata, and Cinque Torri houses a spectacular open-air museum where some of the most heated battles occurred. You’ll also want to look out for the Tyrolean steeple, an onion-domed tower streaking as high as the looming mountains. It’s a truly fascinating climb where gripping sights can be found not only at

L OW- C O S T G E TAWAY S If you need a short holiday but your budget for your flight is around $100 or less, look no further Don’t miss out on these promotions for budget airlines and low-cost carriers.

the mountaintops, but also nestled within the walls of dolomite.

Which path should I take? Anyone can climb the Dolomites, even without experience. However, it’s important to consider a few things before you set off. Some Via Ferratas are merely a walk in the park (or mountain), and can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. Others, however, require more stamina and equipment. You can consult one of the common rating systems used for Via Ferrata climbing: the Fletcher/Smith Rating System or the Hofler/ Werner Rating System. If you register with the official itineraries, all your equipment will be provided. This includes a harness, rope, karabiners and a helmet. Light, flexible hiking shoes and fingerless gloves are your best friends. Why pick the Via Ferrata at the Dolomites? Unlike most Via Ferratas around the world, which were built for tourism, these iron paths are actual fittings that were constructed for WWI. It’s like walking through an open-air museum, except high up on a magnificent peak with an incomparable view. By Pamela Chow

weekender.com.sg There’s so much to eat in the land of feasts – but what are Hong Kong’s best food secrets? Our experts clue us in What is the No. 1 die-die must try food in Hong Kong? Dumplings? Bean paste biscuits? Roasted goose? Celebrity host Michelle Loo thinks it’s none of those. “Food from cha chan teng (tea restaurants) carries true Hong Kong flavour,” said the media personality. So, if you love the city’s collision of old and new, she said, you have to give cha chan teng fusion food a try. Michelle is a popular entertainment writer and food critic from Hong Kong, and the host of TLC’s upcoming programme, “My Taste of Hong Kong”. Premiering on Oct 14, the three-part series follows Michelle as she introduces Hong Kong’s best culinary corners to renowned chefs, including Singaporean chefs Brandon Foo and Shen Tan. We can’t wait, so we got Michelle, Chef Shen, and Chef Brandon to serve out some of the best tips for dining in Southeast Asia’s food mecca.

1. Don’t Pass UP Dingy Corners Great food comes in all packages, not just in Michelin-starred restaurants. Even the smallest, quietest shop hidden behind layers of scaffolding may serve lip-smacking pork cutlet noodles. “Eat what the locals eat – that’s how you know what’s really good,” Chef Shen said. Michelle recommends the old district of Sham Shui Po. Don’t be fooled by its worn façade. These streets are home to some of Hong Kong’s best independent eateries and cafes.

at the spices and ingredients locals use, then I can ‘steal’ the ideas for myself!” Some vendors will even cook for you. Chef Brandon shared how he picked fresh scallops at a traditional market, and they cooked it for him on the spot.

4. Take a Gander at Private Kitchens

Insider’s Tip: Eating in Hong Kong 2. Research Hong Kong Food Blogs Don’t just rely on review and tourism sites. Who knows the city’s offerings better than locals? Besides covering old favourites, local food bloggers are also in the loop when it comes to new, rising-star establishments. It’s a great way to suss out the best bites before they get too crowded!

3. Visit Local Markets Wet markets, dry markets, night markets and supermarkets – if you pass them, go in. Among all the dried products and vegetables are some hidden gems unique to the local cuisine. Chef Shen was especially enamoured of bittersweet jelly-like wong pey (yellow skin) fruits, which she eagerly infused into her drinks. Michelle added cheekily, “I like to look

If you’re adventurous – and you should be – you can make a stop at one of the many private kitchens in Hong Kong. These are small businesses run by great cooks, held in their homes, that entertain a limited number of guests per day. You call ahead for a reservation, and they’ll send you an ad-hoc menu of interesting homemade dishes to choose from. One dish, named “Italian Paint, Chinese Painting”, had Michelle extremely puzzled. It turns out that it was an intriguing fusion of radish cake and squid ink. It’s an ever-changing culinary experience that you can’t get in Singapore, so it’s got a permanent spot on our bucket list.

5. Don’t Fall Back on Typical Hong Kong Dishes There’s nothing wrong with a good plate of roasted goose or world-renowned dim sum but there is a lot more to discover. Catch “My Taste of Hong Kong” for the best of Michelle’s recommendations. And, if you’re ever in doubt, just pick from the many crowded cha chan teng along the streets. “My Taste of Hong Kong” premieres on 14 Oct, and airs every Tue, 11pm on TLC. By Pamela Chow
