weekender.com.sg Franky is going on holiday soon, and he’s leaving me in good hands!
Musings by Fluffy, the rescued pooch, on her new life as a beloved pet and other furry tales
Tips from Fluffy, the rescued pooch, on caring for your furry friends and being a responsible pet owner
Don’t forget your pet when you go on holiday
Hi, people! I’m Fluffy. Franky, my owner, will soon be jetting off for a vacation while I stay behind. But I’m not worried; I know I’ll get a great place to stay while he’s on holiday. Here are some options Franky and I considered.
Staying with Family & Friends We are most comfortable with family members or friends whom we have seen before. Franky said he would have greater peace of mind if I stay with someone we know. And I totally agree! Franky’s uncle is a great person but he has a baby in the house. So that may be an issue for them. Franky’s auntie is quiet and shy. We visited her at home many times. However, she keeps two birds and they may not be used to other animals being around for long periods. As much as this is the best option for us, it seems like this time around our relatives are not able to have me. Franky thus went about exploring other options.
Hiring a Pet-Sitter Besides putting me up at a pet boarding place, Franky is also considering calling in a pet-sitter. What does this mean? It means that I get to stay home even though Franky is on holiday, and the pet-sitter comes over to spend time with me! The cost for this ranges so it’s best to ask friends who’ve used the service before, for recommendations. Jason, our neighbour who used to play with us in the park, is a professional pet-sitter! Jason knows how to handle dogs and he lives nearby – there is the added safety of a familiar environment. Franky thinks Jason is ideal. Tonight, Franky will reveal his decision to me after he treats me to some snacks for being so obedient! Which option do you think he will choose? To find out more about responsible pet ownership, please visit: www.petsforlife.com.sg
Pet Boarding Places Pet boarding places are the most expensive option but they are also one of the most convenient. Franky says that to qualify for boarding places I need to be up-todate with my vaccinations, so that’s not a problem. To make sure the place will be to my liking, he will arrange for a tour of the facility. It’s like researching for a pet hotel!

RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER
Juicy reviews & tips on the EPL & the best of world football
Anfield will tremble at the mighty Blues Look away, Liverpool fans, league leader Chelsea is set to visit Anfield and to inflict more pain on Brendan Rodgers’ struggling Liverpool
The Big Match: Liverpool vs Chelsea Look away, Liverpool fans. The Reds are in rather poor form at the moment; they are fresh off a disappointing defeat against rejuvenated Newcastle and they have failed to score in three of their last five matches. Mario Balotelli is still making the news for the wrong reasons and Brendan Rodgers is facing the wrath of Liverpool fans (at least from what I notice in the twitter-verse). Even the consolation of being 7th (that’s
OTHER FIXTURES: Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

Last weekend’s derby didn’t turn out too badly, did it? It was everything we’ve always wanted in a football match – a goal, a red card, fantastic chances, brilliant goalkeeping, crunching challenges, suspense, drama and controversy, all in one game. This weekend sees another Red vs Blue battle and, if last week’s big match was anything to go by, we’re in for yet another treat this time round.
of its title charge as Chelsea blew the title race wide open with a 2-0 win, no thanks to the Reds’ talisman, Stevie G. The signs are all pointing to a Blue day at Anfield but you never know in football. A good result here could very well kick-start Liverpool’s season but that looks highly unlikely at this moment. Prediction: Liverpool 1-3 Chelsea
Can Brendan Rodgers turn Liverpool’s fortunes around against the mighty Chelsea?
not too bad, especially if you ask any Manchester United fan) isn’t worth shouting about. And, what’s worse, league leader Chelsea is set to visit. Now, I’m sure you remember what happened in this fixture last season. No? Does the Steven Gerrard slip ring a bell? Yes, that’s right. This was the match in which Liverpool lost the impetus
An injury-hit United need to bounce back this week, and Crystal Palace look set to suffer as Louis van Gaal’s men try to recover from the Manchester derby defeat. Prediction: Manchester Utd 3-1 Crystal Palace

team looked far from comfortable at times. Still, the reigning Premier League champions should emerge victorious no matter how difficult Queens Park Rangers tries to be. Prediction: QPR 1-2 Manchester City
Swansea vs Arsenal Imagine where Arsenal would be in the Premier League table had Alexis Sanchez chosen to join another club. So far, the Chilean is single-handedly carrying the Gunners but I do expect the likes of Wilfried Bony and Gylfi Sigurdsson to cause the Arsenal defence some trouble. Supporting Social Causes
Singapore has taken a another step towards hosting the 28th SEA Games in 2015 while allowing every Singaporean to make a difference En route to hosting the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games come June 2015, Singapore has launched the official 28th SEA Games merchandise and store.
By Singaporeans for Singaporeans The official 28th SEA Games Merchandise Store opened its doors to the public last weekend on Nov 1, with a range of SEA Games 2015 merchandise designed by local designers Cheong Kah Meng and Brenna Soong. The store also carries apparel designed by local designer Benny Ong. The launch took place at 2.30pm in front of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre in Orchard Road, where the store is located.
Part of the proceeds of the sale of official merchandise will go towards supporting social causes. $10 from the sale of acrylic paintings hand painted by MINDS (Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore) trainees and $1 from the sale of tote bags put together by MINDS trainees will go directly to MINDS. $1 from the sale of three specially-themed gel bracelets, one each for MINDS, SAVH (Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped) and SCORE (Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises), will go directly to the respective causes. Five per cent of total proceeds will also be donated to social causes such as SportCares Foundation, which uses sport as a channel to help the vulnerable segment of the community to live better lives, and SPMF, which helps to provide pocket money to children from lowerincome families. The SEA Games will return to Singapore in 2015, after 22 years, with the Singapore Sports Hub as the main venue.

Entertainment The astronaut crew makes spectacular discoveries on their interstellar voyage
Is space the only way out of a dying Earth?
Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, Anne Hathaway as Brand and David Oyelowo as Principal
movie preview Interstellar [PG13] Director: Christopher Nolan Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine Genre: Sci-Fi Run Length: 169 min Release: 6 Nov Interstellar may be a top-secret film, but we dish out as much information to you as we can
I
t’s arguably one of the most anticipated films of the year, but Interstellar has been shrouded in secrecy. Since his 2012 success, The Dark Knight Rises, visionary director Christopher Nolan has been lying low, refusing to reveal much about his upcoming movie. Interstellar has been kept so tightly under wraps that nobody really knows what to expect. Those who do know have been (we believe) threatened into silence. Online descriptions are bare-boned and critics’ reviews are tight-lipped. So, with the truth lying somewhere out there, we reveal what information we have and offer informed guesses on what to look out for.
An EPIC SPACE VOYAGE Ravaged by drought and famine, Earth is inching towards extinction and taking the human race with it. When a suspicious wormhole opens up in outer space, humankind’s first reaction is to gamble with precious lives and to launch people towards the gaping chasm. Naturally. But as the astronaut crew ventures through the wormhole, they make a mysterious yet stunning discovery that questions our understanding of the universe. We’re not deliberately teasing you here but that’s all the information available
What’s Nolan being so secretive about? We take a stab at guessing Disclaimer: We claim no responsibility if any of our predictions come true!
on Interstellar’s plot. However, we believe that we can make some light of it, so stay with us.
Whether you now have some answers or even more questions, only catching the movie can give you the closure you need.
Super troopers
Out of this World
Embarking on this suicide mission is a crew portrayed by a star-studded cast. Playing protagonist Will Cooper is Matthew McConaughey, winner of multiple Academy Awards (Dallas Buyers Club, Magic Mike) and established owner of the catchphrase “Alright, alright, alright”. Accompanying him is Brand, played by the multi-talented Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada). Cooper’s daughter, Murph, is played by none other than Jessica Chastain of Mama, and The Help. The stellar list rolls on, with outstanding names such as Michael Caine (The Dark Knight series, Batman Begins), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) and Casey Affleck (the Ocean’s trilogy). But we have no idea who their characters really are. Online sources such as IMDb (International Movie Database) and Wikipedia mostly credit them without their roles. Even if they did reveal their characters’ names, there’s still no way of really knowing who’s who. What we do know – and this is up to you to interpret – is that there are “Young Murph” and “Old Murph” credits for the film. This means that Cooper’s daughter will age throughout the film, giving an indication of how long the space voyage will take.
Another certainty is that Interstellar is a cinematically-beautiful masterpiece. It’s difficult to render the universe such that we feel dwarfed by its stunning magnitude. Nolan has done exactly that. With his portfolio of successes that includes The Dark Knight series and Inception, Nolan has maintained a high standard throughout his work. For Interstellar, he has crafted a visually-arresting set that thrills viewers with the infinite vastness of space and the pure power of existence. This film can only be fully enjoyed in theatres – any other mode of viewing would not do this magnum opus justice. At the very least, it looks like a very influential advertorial for space travel. If it really came down to Earth’s extinction, interstellar migration may not be such a big no-no after all.
The popular Anne Hathaway is an interesting choice for the role of Brand, one of the astronauts launched into space
Guess #1
Guess #2
Guess #3
Matthew McConaughey enters a weird warp, befriends a giant black rectangle, and turns into a baby (a la Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey). Maybe he bumps into Sandra Bullock in space too.
McConaughey finds an alternate universe/dimension/ego in a galaxy far, far away, mutters “Alright, alright, alright...” and takes his shirt off. Hmm... This, many would like to see.
It turns out that McConaughey’s in a dream within a dream and, if you listen closely, you can hear the hiss of a dream machine and Leonardo DiCaprio whispering, “We have to go deeper.”

Before I Go to Sleep: Paranoia or real fear?
Nicole Kidman as Christine Lucas, who suffers from amnesia and relies on video logs for treatment
This thriller based on amnesia stars big names such as Nicole Kidman, Mark Strong and Colin Firth If you watched the romantic comedy 50 First Dates and went “Aww”, you’ll change your mind about amnesia with Before I Go to Sleep. Imagine waking up every morning and panicking when you see a strange man sleeping beside you. That’s the reality that Christine Lucas (portrayed by Nicole Kidman) has to live with every single day. The man beside her introduces himself as her husband, Ben (played by Colin Firth), and explains that she has suffered from brain damage since her car accident ten years ago. Now, imagine you’re Ben – you have to repeat the same routine to the same frightened woman every single morning, and you don’t get to forget it. We’re not sure if husband or wife has it worse.
Lies & Deception Christine consults a neurologist, Dr Nasch (Mark Strong, of Sherlock Holmes and Mindscape), who recommends that she records her daily revelations on camera. (That’s reality vlogging right there.) Over the course of her treatment, Christine makes further – and more shocking – discoveries about the people around her. Along the way, we are also cast into dizzying paranoia about every other character in the movie. Is Ben telling the truth? Should Christine even be talking to Dr Nasch? Can Christine’s estranged best friend, Claire, be trusted?
Mark Strong is known for strong performances, such as in Sherlock Holmes and Mindscape
The best deception of all is that even we are being lied to. I’m not going to reveal it here; it’s a long con that you have to come to realisation yourself.
Recurring Nightmare? Although the movie is based on SJ Watson’s best-selling novel of the same name, Before I Go to Sleep has not garnered a big whoop among critics. “Before I Go to Sleep feels like a recurring nightmare – the kind you wake up from and wonder why you dream in clichés,” one reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes wrote. Kidman’s performance has received mixed responses as well (which is an uncommon occurrence). While some

weekender.com.sg Kim Yoo Jung is only 15 but has already starred in 45 productions, and is Korea’s most popular young actress
Kim Yoo Jung: Korea’s most popular young actress
6 things from the 1980s-1990s that kids today will “catch no ball”
Korean starlet Kim Yoo Jung shares her experiences and challenges in the acting industry, and some things fans may not know about her
I do have acne breakout when I’m tired due to a long filming (session) but I maintain my clean complexion with thorough homecare. I also apply aloe soothing gel before giving my skin a second shot of moisture with an aloe pack (to) overcome skin dryness.
Please tell us more about your character, Seo Ji Dam, in “Secret Door”. Seo Ji Dam is a novelist with the pen name Bingae. She is a fierce, bandit-eluding, literarily-brilliant woman, who is capable of speaking banmal (informal language) with men twice her age. She is dying of curiosity as if she was a girl detective.
What do you do while in between takes? I sometimes read, eat ice cream, (start) fanning myself – and, of course, I will not wear traditional sandals between takes! I wear a pair of comfortable slippers.
As a child actress, do you have fears about your future in acting? Yes, I do. I’d be lying if I said I’m not worried. But I think fear is necessary for my development… I hope to pass into the next stage of my acting career as smoothly as possible.
What kind of role would you like, that you’ve not yet had a chance to play? My biggest goal as an actress is to play an evil role so well to the point where the audience would curse at me. That would really mean that my acting was accepted and done well. I want to be a bad person.
Photos: ONE, Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia
With her sweet and gentle smile, Kim Yoo Jung is fondly regarded as Korea’s most popular child actress. At only 15 years old, she has already starred in 45 productions in cinema and on television. Her career began at just three years old, in a TV commercial, after her mother submitted her photos for an online contest. Since then, Yoo Jung shot to fame with her roles in dramas such as “Dong Yi”, “Moon Embracing the Sun” and “May Queen”. Most recently, she portrays a freespirited novelist in the tense “Secret Door” series. We got an exclusive interview with Yoo Jung, who reveals her thoughts on starting in the industry early, coping with the stress, and her desire for eternal youth.
Your skin is flawless! How do you keep your face so fresh?
Kids be like, “Cassettes? Floppy disks? What’s that? Food?”
Yoo Jung stars in period drama “Secret Door”
You know when you can call yourself old? When things you used to do no longer make any sense to kids today. Here are some things that you will probably get but the generation after you will be clueless about.
1. Cassettes Yes, there was a time when the amount of songs you can cram into something was measured in minutes, rather than in gigabytes. The iPod generation will never understand. The funny thing is, Apple is discontinuing the iPod.
2. Floppy disks
I like eating fast food and greasy food. I’ve been acting since I was very young so I controlled a little bit, what I ate… If I hadn’t been an actress, I think I would have been overweight. I really enjoy eating… I even feel that I was born to eat. I can even eat three to four bowls of rice in a row.
...I do get hurt a bit on the inside. However, I try to receive them as a good chance to change my flaws.
It’d be nice not to become an adult. I really feel good (being) at my age right now. As you get older, your sense of responsibility always increases. I hate thinking about how I must handle the things I want. I eat the food my mum cooks and I like doing the things I want right now.
We used to carry stacks of these around, especially when you had to store pictures and photographs in them. These days, kids store everything on the ‘cloud’.
How do you manage your health and your love for eating?
All celebrities have antifans. How do you deal with negative feedback?
Would you like to grow older quickly and play grown-up characters?
Mothership.sg covers current affairs, lifestyle topics as well as soon-to-trend issues. It is read by more than 700,000 Singaporeans monthly.
Although I am calm on the outside, I do get hurt a bit on the inside. However, I try to receive them as a good chance to change my flaws.
If you weren’t an actress, what would you be?
Hmm... My original dream was to be a doctor. And I also want to be a designer, chef and reporter. I’m also interested in the arts and physical education, so athlete as well! [laughs] But I’m not strong enough to be a soccer player, so maybe jump rope?
Would you like to be a K-Pop idol? I’d wanted to be a singer as well but I think I’d feel lonely if I debuted as a solo. (And) I’d be in conflict with other people if I debuted in a group because someone would be more popular than another person. I think being a trainee (singer) is very tough as well, so I like acting the best. [laughs] By Pamela Chow Catch Kim Yoo Jung’s latest series, “Secret Door”, every Mon & Tue, 8.55pm, exclusively on ONE.
3. Tea dances Clubbing at 4pm in the day? Sure! Clubbing without alcohol? No problem.
4. Programming a video recorder Remember how tedious it was to have to rewind and fast forward just to get to the right parts? You also had to program the video recorder to record a few minutes earlier in case you miss the start of the show. The YouTube and On-Demand TV generation would never understand our pain.
5. Secret games on calculators No smart phones? No problem. There were other ways to entertain ourselves, except that this helped our dexterity and maths skills at the same time.
6. Double decker buses without aircon These buses were hot. When they stopped in traffic, the smell of exhaust permeated the air. Luckily, in those days, Singapore was not packed with people or we would’ve had many commuters fainting on the buses. Kids these days probably live in a reality in which all public buses come air-conditioned. re you sick of the same old food places? Always ‘siam-ing’ the question when your friends ask, “Go where eat today ah”? This list will save you.
I am incredibly easy to please. My cravings go from a simple McDonald’s breakfast to, at best, an exotic Indian meal. But I’ve since realised that my friends are not as easy to please. If you’re in the same boat, or simply looking for somewhere new to eat, this map and list are here to help you. You have more than two new options to try per week! Are you ready?
The food not only looks good but tastes good too

D’bell Honestly, my idea of Indian food had been limited. I’ve not tried that much so far. D’bell has certainly broadened my perspective and impressed me to the core. Crab in da Bag I am not an expert on crab - it is too much work for too little meat. But you Eastsiders need a new food spot! Crab in Da Bag is most famous for its crab, of course, and being so near to the coast, I think they should be more fresh than the Prince of Bel-Air. SMOR Smor is more a bistro than a restaurant but it has to be on the list. I live and breathe smoked salmon, so it is no surprise that I found myself in this quaint place looking for my fix. They are incredibly generous with the salmon and shrimp so if you have a mini seafood craving, you know where to go!
Whole & Hearty Breakfast sounds much cooler with Whole & Hearty. I am not a fan of yoghurt, and breakfast bars like this often drop out of my radar. The only reason it’s here is because of its creative toppings. You’ve got to try the freeze dry yoghurt toppings!

Recipes and tips from local chef Violet Oon! Nai Bai is one of my favourite vegetables as it looks very attractive, is crunchy in texture and has a delicious taste. This is one of the vegetables grown in Singapore farms and it is great to know that we are sustaining our farmers and their farms through purchasing local produce.
Nai Bai with Mushrooms & Goji Berries

Method

1. Soak dried mushrooms in 1 cup of tap water overnight, then drain. Squeeze dry, cut off the stalks and keep the mushroom water. 2. Wash and soak soya beans in 4 cups water for 4 to 5 hours in a small pot. Add sliced celery, sliced carrots and sliced onions and boil over low heat for 1 to 2 hours to make a delicious vegetable stock. Soak the red dates till soft – about 30 minutes. 3. Wash goji berries and soak in water just enough to cover the berries for 10 minutes. Drain.

4. Wash the white fungus and soak till softened – about 30 minutes. Cut off the hard stalk end.

5. Wash the Nai Bai, cut off the ends of the stalks and leave the plant whole. Blanch briefly in boiling water until the colour changes (Pic 1). Drain (Pic 2) and keep aside. Keep the water to make vegetable stock for future use. 6. Heat a wok and when it is hot, add the 2 tablespoons of oil and, when oil is hot, add dried mushrooms and fry till a little brown. 7. Then add the red dates, about 2 cups of vegetable stock along with some of the mushroom water and all the other ingredients. Bring to a boil and add the white fungus and when the gravy is thick, turn off the heat. 8. Serve on a platter – with the Nai Bai arranged on one side, and pour the sauce over it. Brought to you by:
• Select vegetables with crispy, fresh leaves, as well as tender and fleshy stems. • Soak vegetables in fresh tap water for 15 minutes.
And that for me is a memory I don’t forget to this day,” he shared.

A highlight was Calombaris’ favourite take on the Greek salad, topped with stir-fried abalone.
With Greek blood in his veins, Calombaris’ dishes have a strong taste of Grecian tradition. In the interview with Weekender, he explained that memories are especially crucial to him in cooking. “My mom’s egg and chicken soup (is) a very wholesome, very classic great dish. How often do you get an awardwinning celebrity chef cooking for you? At a Hubalicious dinner event recently (by StarHub & Lifetime Asia), “Masterchef Australia” judge George Calombaris whipped up a four-course dinner for 250 lucky fans here. Calombaris was in Singapore to promote Season 6 of the highlysuccessful series. He spent the evening cooking for fans at the swanky Hotel Jen in Tanglin, which was recently rebranded from Traders Hotel.
One fan was invited on stage to critique this dish in Masterchef style. Beside her, Calombaris mock-wept, “This dish is so important to me!” Other entrées included chicken parfait – imagine a soft mousse, but chicken-flavoured! – and chunky chocolate cake with truffle caramel drops.
You’d think that for a Masterchef like Calombaris, taste is king. But it’s not – in fact, he can dislike even a delicious dish. “(It must have) that warmth and generosity that it needs – that energy, the feeling,” he said. “For me, the (perfect) dish can be tomatoes, in season, kissed by the sun... It’s given to me specially by someone that loves food and they’re proud of those tomatoes... That for me is perfect, and I’d want to go back and eat it again,” he said. There’s a Singaporean dish that he wants to savour again too. During the interview, he was treated to chilli crab. He dove straight for the man tou (fried buns) and polished off the entire dish, and licked his fingers dry. He cheekily remarked, “I’m bringing this back with me!”

SHOWFLAT IDEAS
A transitional space can be improved with panelling strips – a narrow, banal space is given depth and texture

Pay Attention to Ancillary Spaces
Design details can make or break a showflat, and interior designers know this full well, which is why even ancillary spaces are given due attention. Take a page from this showflat by De Style Interior where even corridor spaces are designed to impress. A dramatic transitional space can be had by way of panelling strips. When layered in this fashion, a narrow and banal space is given depth and texture. It doesn’t take a lot to up the ante in your home when you start considering and designing oft-overlooked spaces like corridors, foyers, the balcony and the yard. Design by De Style Interior

Concealed Kitchen Units
Introduce pops of colour in unexpected ways – forget coloured walls and look to coloured accessories, lamps and even a coloured bed
Dressed to impress, condominium showflats are prime inspiration sources. Not only do they look impeccable, they also often feature clever ideas worth learning from. Here are a few tips we picked up from some stylish showflats.
Versatile Feature Walls
Feature walls are common in homes, but this Riverbank condominium showsuite is an example of how a customisable wall can do wonders for a living room. A plain wall is covered with thin strips of wood for added texture in this home. The best part, however, is the adjustable shelves that are slotted between the strips of wood. These shelves can be quickly and easily positioned along any of the slots, letting you reconfigure the display

Stretched Out This showflat at the Riverbank condominium teaches us that it’s all right to defy convention. Instead of being limited by the constraints of the dining room, the design team integrated the spacious balcony into the design of the home. As such, the dining table stretches from the allocated dining space to the outdoor balcony, creating an indoor-outdoor dining experience. We can imagine throwing big dinner parties that stretch into the wee hours of a balmy night. Riverbank@Fernvale, courtesy of UOL Group
Showflats always seem to have the best kitchens: fully outfitted with state-of-theart appliances, clad in quality surfaces, and spacious to boot. In this black and white kitchen by Unimax Creative, we see how all the appliances and kitchen accessories are neatly concealed behind glossy cabinet fronts. The result is a sleek and seamless kitchen with polished surfaces that make the home feel more inviting. You may also notice that there are no visible handles on the kitchen cabinets. Instead, you just need to lightly push on the cabinet fronts and the panels will automatically lift up. Such concealed kitchen units are great for open concept apartments where having an enclosed cooking space is not possible. Design by Unimax Creative
Double The Space
A kid’s bedroom is one of the hardest spaces to design. And when two children share the same room, the conundrum is doubled. In this show suite for the upcoming Riverbank condominium, a single bedroom can now comfortably accommodate two kids and
Did you know that Danish artists and architects were among the first in the Western world to embrace Japanese art and craftsmanship, at the end of the 19th Century? This explains why there are such similarities between Danish and Japanese design cultures, and it certainly explains why the recent collaboration between BoConcept and criticallyacclaimed Japanese design studio nendo makes perfect sense. Keeping in mind the strong influence that Japanese design has on modern living, BoConcept approached nendo founder Oki Sato to create a suite of key furniture pieces and accessories that reflect the urban dweller’s desire for easy, functional design with a measured dose of personality. Taking inspiration from the traditional Japanese art of origami, Oki saw the collection as a series of two- and three-dimensional forms. This plays out nicely in the “Fusion” armchair with its sculptural, enveloping shape. The theme continues in the sofa, rug, cushions and cups.
all their toys and belongings. A customised bunk bed makes full use of the height of this room. Further adding to the multi-functional aspect of this room are the storage shelves that are built into the frame of the bunk bed. The ladder that gives access to the upper bunk doubles as display shelves. Riverbank@Fernvale, courtesy of UOL Group
Alternative Ways to Inject Colour
Generally, Singaporeans are wary of having strong colours in their homes with most preferring their rooms in safe, neutral shades. However, should the idea of colour in the bedrooms ever strike your fancy, this showflat bedroom demonstrates how you can introduce pops of colour in unexpected ways. Forget about coloured walls and look to coloured accessories, lamps and, if you’re adventurous enough, a coloured bed! Tired of the colour scheme? Simply switch out the accessories and you’ve got a new look. Design by Ciseern
Maximise Bay Window Ledges
Bay windows are a common nuisance for many who stay in condominiums. This ledge by the window takes up precious floor space, and not many know how to integrate it into the design of their spaces. D’Initial Concept presents an entirely agreeable proposition by building the bed directly on top of the bay window. Not only does this solve the problem of the space-hogging bay window, it also dictates the placement of the bed. The design firm goes on to turn a potential problem into smart storage solutions: pull-out drawers are built beneath the bed and a cantilevered study desk is set against the foot of the bed. Design by D’Initial Concept
The collection is elegant in its simplicity. At the same time, peeks of playfulness surface ever so often – it is signature nendo. “The nendo look is pure and authentic with a very minimal touch,” says Collection Director at BoConcept, Claus Ditlev. “But that’s not all – nendo gives something more with their design. A little twist that catches the eye and creates a small moment,” he says. As its tag line succinctly states, the Fusion collection is about “creating small moments in big city life”. This string of islands surrounded by clear blue waters and colourful marine life is definitely heaven on Earth but do you know how to truly kick back and relax in the Maldives? Bridging the digital world with the physical world, the Angry Birds game has come to life at the Angry Birds Activity Park in Johor Bahru. The indoor park (rain or shine, yay!) covers 26,000 sq ft and is strategically located in the premises of KOMTAR JBCC, Johor Bahru City Centre’s newest premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination. The state of the art Angry Birds Activity Park is easily accessible and offers a wide variety of fun games and attractions suitable for toddlers, kids, youths and parents alike. At the Angry Birds Activity Park, the whole family can experience the fun and excitement of racing to the finish line in pedal cars, climbing to the top of ‘pig-built’ structures and leaping from tall heights. Whether you’re knocking down pigs, playing in the game lounge, or dodging lasers on your quest to claim the golden egg-steriod, you’ll be sure to find fun around every corner. And, who knows, you might even meet an Angry Bird or Bad Piggy in person! Morocco Arabian nights
Morocco is a land of wonders, both modern and traditional. The colourful and scenic city of Marrakesh is probably the place that best brings to life the gorgeous Arabian Nights. Marrakesh may be a bustling city but there are spots where you can hide away in utmost comfort. Choose from an array of elegant hotels with marbled columns, spa resorts that resemble ancient Roman baths, and august retreats with sprawling gardens and original artworks. Don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll at dusk, when you can witness the inimitable North African sunset over the magnificent architectural heritage of the city.
Sri Lanka – Lush Serenity
Watching elephants shower and play will delight and relax you
Not many people know about the secret serene spots in this pear-shaped island filled with lush greenery as well as historic gems. With eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, Sri Lanka is one of the best treasure troves today. These protected sites include ancient legendary temples that have withstood more than 2,000 years of history. You can also rest beneath the trunk of the world’s oldest living tree – or that of one of the friendly elephants gathering for their breakfast in the park! There are also agencies specialising in putting together wellness packages in Sri Lanka for you, so you can segue from the crowds entirely and have a peaceful getaway all to yourself. The “Kingdom of Happiness” will rub off on you
Bhutan – Kingdom of Happiness
Lying on the eastern end of the Himalayas is this “Kingdom of Happiness”. While the rest of the world is caught up with Gross National Product, Bhutan places its Gross National Happiness first. Not surprisingly, everyone here is just so blissful. If you visit Bhutan, I can guarantee that you will be very, very content too – you’ll get to sit undisturbed on an untouched mountain, eat a fresh organic meal by a peaceful stream, and enjoy colourful traditional festivals that occur all year round. They’ll take you to the best places that many of those “Top 10 Things to Do in Bhutan” articles don’t even know of. Wouldn’t that make you happy too? By Pamela Chow
