RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER

Juicy reviews & tips on the EPL & the best of world football

Battle of former greats Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United pays a visit to the Emirates stadium and plot to beat Arsenal on its own turf After a temporary hiatus due to the mandatory international fixtures, the Premier League returns this weekend, and there’s no better headliner than Manchester United’s visit to the Emirates to face Arsenal.

McNair and his band of United youths come to their rescue again? Danny Welbeck will be the centre of attention as he faces his boyhood club, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against the team who ditched him because he “wasn’t good enough”. Surely he’ll want to prove a point to van Gaal.

Arsenal Man-to-watch: Alexis Sanchez The Chilean has scored 12 goals in all competitions for Arsenal so far this season, with eight of them coming in the league. His desire has been infectious to the Gunners but at times he does appear to be a one-man army. If Arsenal are to get anything out of this game, expect Sanchez to play a key role.

his goal-scoring form on the domestic level, and will pose many problems for the Arsenal defense. It was a stalemate the last time these two met at the Emirates, and it was a 1-1 draw before that, so don’t rule out another similar result this time round. Prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Manchester Utd Other Fixtures:

Manchester United Man-to-watch: Wayne Rooney The Manchester United and England captain is fresh off celebrating reaching the century mark for his country, with a goal in the 3-1 win over Slovenia. He will be looking to replicate

The Big Match:

Arsenal vs Manchester United (Sun, 1.30am) In the early 2000s, this fixture was usually a 1st vs 2nd type of encounter, but how the mighty have fallen. First it was Arsenal and its inability to win a trophy (until last year’s FA Cup, of course). Now, Manchester United seems to be in its own slump too, ever since Sir Alex Ferguson ended his reign some time ago. So, it’s now 6th vs 7th, and neither team can afford to drop any more points. Arsenal’s last match ended in a surprise defeat at the hands of Swansea, while United laboured to a victory over Crystal Palace, having lost to Manchester City and drawing against Chelsea prior to that. Louis van Gaal’s task hasn’t been any easier with the injury crisis his team is facing. Will they even have enough players to fill the bench, or will the likes of Paddy

Entertainment Musings by Fluffy, the rescued pooch, on her new life as a beloved pet and other furry tales

How to decode animal behaviour

Confused by your pet? Sometimes, we misinterpret what our pets are trying to tell us – here are some tips to decode their behaviour Hi, I’m Fluffy! Christmas is coming and that means a lot of loud parties are coming up for the humans! Loud noises and new faces are not things we are really the most comfortable with. What can Franky do to help us?

Handling your Pet During Gatherings If your dog prefers not to join in the party, give him space by putting him in a room with his favourite toys. A baby gate can create a good buffer without shutting him out completely. Occasionally, do go back and spend some time with your dog to let him know he’s not forgotten.

Warning Signs to Watch Out For

Photo: PC Chong

A dog that may enjoy the party may not stay interested the entire time. Watch out for signs of stress, such as yawning, licking the lips and showing the white part of the eye in a half-moon shape. When this happens, it means your dog is feeling worried and wants to be left alone. Bring him into a room, as mentioned earlier. Friends and family members may get excited to pet and interact with your dog, but the feeling may not be mutual. Signs include the dog turning his head away, walking away or trying to hide under the furniture when approached. When Franky realises I’m uncomfortable, he would take me into a quiet room and bring in my favourite

This is a relaxed friend of mine. Franky would approve!

Chew-A-Bone. This always helps to calm me down.

For Families with Kids Be careful that your children are not causing your pet discomfort. Actually, dogs do not like hugs and kisses. Even if your dog allows it, do not expect him to accept the same treatment from strangers, or in situations when there is a lot of clamour. In the end, Franky decided that it would be easier to have their family buffet along the corridor, and to invite the neighbours to join in the party too. Anyway, there’s more space outside and I get to stay in the house and watch everyone from the comfort of my home. To find out more about responsible pet ownership, please visit: www.petsforlife.com.sg

When you see more white in your dog’s eyes, it means your dog is really uncomfortable with his current situation

movie review

Why the Hunger Games will starve you

Katniss becomes a messianic figure to the people of ravaged districts Natalie Dormer of “Game of Thrones” stars as Cressida

The Hunger Games saga’s latest instalment will leave you hungry for more – but not just for good reasons

We Need a Hero

Warning: Spoilers ahead

I

f you recall, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire left us with a pretty twisted cliffhanger. Our heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) was separated from her partner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), and she was whisked away to the rebel headquarters in District 13. Now, in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, we finally get to see the mysterious and abandoned District 13, and witness the uprising against the corrupt Capitol. Meanwhile, Peeta is shown to have been chillingly brainwashed. But it seems that we haven’t actually budged much from the cliffhanger in Catching Fire. Mockingjay Part 1 is an endless plateau of suspense; an infinite wait for some real action. It is all hunger and no Games.

Stanley Tucci returns as the colourful Caesar Flickerman

The other half features Katniss running towards, around and away from things caught on fire, without engaging in any intense combat. In the entire film, she only shoots one arrow (which, in true Katniss fashion, hits the mark). In other words, it is “All queue, no roller-coaster,” as critic Robbie Collin writes for The Telegraph. My mind is now a devastated landscape of broken promises, through which Katniss is endlessly fighting her way.

The Bummer Games The trailer teases us with the prospect of explosive action, tense confrontations, and even a glimpse at the mystifying District 13 that was previously destroyed by the Capitol. But Mockingjay Part 1 left me empty with unfulfilled expectations. Half the movie is set deep underground in a sterile military facility, away from the fascinating set of the devastated District 13.

s ta r o f t h e w e e k

Monkey Goes West’s little star Ethan Han may be young but he’s a little dynamo Many great things have come out of W!LD RICE (Wild Rice), with the likes of gifted artists such as Ivan Heng and Alfian Sa’at. Uncovering young talent is a mission that Wild Rice takes seriously, and we think they’re doing something spot on on this front.

been split into two movie halves. And, true to many fears, this first part of Mockingjay is quite a drag. One could see this as a buffer, or even a super-extended trailer, for Mockingjay Part 2. The build-up in Part 1 is intense. Every moment keeps you on edge while you’re expecting something to go wrong or to go boom – but nothing really does. In one scene, Katniss is introduced to her new gear: incendiary arrows and a swanky new bow. Little Ethan Han is one of the programme’s emerging talents. At just ten years old, he has participated in several local productions, including Wild Rice’s Jack & the Bean-Sprout! last year. In Wild Rice’s latest play, Monkey Goes West, Ethan takes on a variety of sprightly roles that light up the stage with song and dance. With his powerful vocals and poised demeanour, he seems to be one of the company’s best discovered gems. Weekender chats with Ethan about acting, singing, and coping with school.

Tell us about your role in Monkey Goes West. I have many roles! Not only am I singing, but I’m also dancing and acting. For one of the songs, I’m a ladybug, and for another, I’m a crab.

What do you like about performing in this play? The cast is really good and funny! Monkey Goes West combines the East and the West.

What do you like about acting in theatre? I like it when the audience claps! It’s really

It’s a good thing that the talented stars, Lawrence and Hutcherson, are there to save the day. Given the movie’s disappointing lack of action, Lawrence did a great job of portraying the broken, reluctant heroine, while making climbing through debris look poignant and captivating. And Hutcherson’s cold performance as a brainwashed Capitol spokesperson is haunting - an apt reflection of the unapologetic tyrant, President Coriolanus Snow. One can almost overlook the insignificant progress that Mockingjay Part 1 makes in the series. Time critic Richard Collis wrote: “Hundreds of millions of people will go see it… under threat of the mortal sin of having to confess you skipped it.” So, while I’m glad I caught Mockingjay Part 1, I left wanting even more. What’s your favourite genre of music?

You can’t just have fun all the time. During the play, you need to be serious; if you’re just having fun, you’ll affect the whole cast.

When did you realise that you want to ACT?

I mostly sing jazz. Everyone likes pop, so sometimes I do pop and rock too. For ABRSM (the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music), I learn foreign songs like Chinese, German, French and Latin.

It actually started with singing but when I went for an audition and got an acting role, I thought it was really fun and wanted to do it again.

Wow, you have many talents! where do you see yourself in ten years?

How did you convince your parents to let you pursue these extra activities? At first, my mom had her doubts. But I showed that if I do my work and be consistent, I can still do well in school and act in plays, so we made an agreement.

Do you have any advice for kids who want to pursue their passion outside of school? Before exams I study a lot but I still take time to rehearse. You can’t be studying

8 Simple childhood snacks that made us so happy we didn’t need cupcakes and churros

Childhood never tasted sweeter Let’s put aside the crazy haze and think of happy thoughts like childhood snacks. Then, compound that happiness by thinking of our adult spending power and that we can buy the snacks in bulk now.

1. Ice Lolly Tubes There are only two types of people in the world: The people who bite the top and twist the bottom, or those that break the tubes in half. Can you remember the ache in your teeth and the saltiness of your own saliva chewing through the plastic packaging?

2. Hiro cake When recess time comes, we stock up on these small cheapo chocolate covered sponges. We’d eat them on the school bus even though they were squashed flat in our schoolbags.

3 & 4. Ding Dang & Tora This was our budget-friendly version of Kinder Bueno even before that luxury treat arrived in Singapore. Nobody cared that it was obviously a copyright infringement of Doraemon. And, apparently, Tora had more premium toys.

5. Mr Softee Because 7-11 used to have something we really wanted. Like Chendol Softee. And that incredible chocolate fudge add-on for 30 cents. Slurp.

6. Biscuit Piring We would wolf each dry and lightly-sweetened disc down, ending up with lots of wafer flakes on our laps. Who’s to say we didn’t use them as discuses?

7. Ring pop Diamonds were really affordable and tasty in those years. As they say today, if you like it then you should put a ring on it.

8. Whistling sweets A faster way to set up a school choir with one tune: we present the Whistle Candy. Along with a lot of saliva.

Hairy Crab Menu a “Gold Rush” Peony Jade celebrates the return of the much-awaited crab season, with a brand new menu

Peony Jade’s culinary team ushers in the return of the much-awaited annual crab season with quality crustaceans from Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu province, China, with a new Cantonese menu that displays both a great respect for tradition as well as an enthusiastic nod to contemporary tastes.

A Modern Take on the Golden Roe At Peony Jade, modern seafood enthusiasts would welcome “The Gold Rush” menu as it offers not only the classics but also a fresh take with the intensely-buttery roe. The “Mister Crab” Crystal Dumpling ($18.80+ for 4 pieces) looked too good to be eaten. Cute as a button, this savoury delight and Instagram-worthy morsel is filled with fresh prawns and hairy crab meat that will rival any dim sum classic. The dumpling looked good and tasted pretty decent, but it might be a tad pricey.

Food Fit for Royalty Steamed Hairy Crab with Homemade Chinese Rice Wine

Another fun creation is the symbolically prosperous “The

Golden Charm” Pomegranateshaped hairy crab meat topped with creamy golden roe ($58+). The beautifully-wrapped pomegranateshaped pouch of freshly-steamed prawn is dressed generously with tobiko or salmon fish eggs that delightfully “pop” with flavour. Sprinkled with edible gold, the savoury bundle sits atop a tasty serving of gravy filled with the golden crab roe. To perfect the modern dish, a choice Italian vinegar is served as the Golden Charm’s worthy condiment. It seems like every dish here is fit for royalty.

The Yin Yang Balance The star of the meal was the Steamed Hairy Crab with Homemade Chinese Rice Wine ($48+), a sweet and spicy brew that offers the perfect Yin-Yang harmony. The crab was served in a stone bowl, similar to that of the Korean bibimbap. The soup’s nutritious essence is layered with the grated ginger, Chinese rice wine (infused with fresh ginger juice) and crunchy

The iconic old-new eating place Lau Pa Sat reopened in July after renovations – we size the place up to bring you old favourites and new dishes Lau Pa Sat is a legend; it is arguably the most iconic hawker centre in Singapore. When it closed for renovation, it raised an uproar with many folks worrying if their old favourite stalls would be gone. Surprisingly, its reopening has so far seemed quiet and toned down – a far cry from the old days. We went with an empty stomach and attempted to conquer Lau Pa Sat. Was it truly worth the visit? I review eight different dishes at Lau Pa Sat. You might be just as surprised as I was by the result. Laksa: Seng Kee Local Delights

Dream Dessert Then, up the ante to a whole new level by savouring the brand’s signature bittersweet Mao Shan Wang Durian Mochi. The chewy yet perfectly-soft mochi skin encases the unadulterated Mao Shan Wang durian pulp inside. I preferred the Durian Mochi to the Hot Ginger Tea with Glutinous Rice Dumplings. The Durian Mochi was soft and chewy outside, and the durian filling was fresh and sweet on the inside – and it served as a fantastic end to the meal. “The Gold Rush” seasonal hairy crab promotion at Peony Jade @ Keppel Club is available until Nov 30. Prices start from $12++ for a la carte items, $88++ per person for set menu and $138++ per person for premium set menu.

Wanton Mee: Chicky Fun

Siew Mai & Har Gao: 3.5/5 I had low expectations for this. Most hawker centres have a customary dim sum stall but it hardly is any good. It was thus a pleasant surprise when I found the har gao smooth and soft. The siew mai was up to standard too, with a great aroma and succulent meat. Gustoso Grill Pasta Western Food

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee: Seng Kee Local Delights

Wanton Mee: 3.4/5 While I do not commend the service of the staff, this remains one of the top offerings of Lau Pa Sat. The wanton was soft and juicy, the char siew was succulent and savoury, and the noodles were fantastic – and this was two hours after buying it. That’s right, if a dish can taste good dabao-ed, it would taste good any time.

Did we miss any out? Let us know! All food stalls are from Lau Pa Sat, 18 Raffles Quay, Singapore 048582

Chicken Pasta: 4/5 Laksa: 3.8/5

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee: 3.5/5

I tried the laksa after seeing another customer order it. How could I resist this? Personally, I think what makes a good laksa dish is how well the soup tastes by itself, and this was marvellous. The prawn is satisfying and tender too.

Have you seen such beautiful prawns? I asked the hawkers at Seng Kee to serve me their best dish and they proudly presented this to me. The prawns are well-cooked and soft, and the noodles come with a generous sprinkling of ingredients. I admit my guilty pleasure: I especially liked how oily it was!

Pig’s Organs Soup & Kway Chap

Pig’s Organs Soup & Kway Chap: 3/5 The most important element of any Kway Chap is the sauce. If it isn’t savoury enough, then the entire dish would be a flop. I love the tenderness of the trotters and the velvety texture of the innards.

Being a bit like a foreigner to local dishes despite being Singapore-born and bred [I know, it’s a disgrace], this was one dish I could properly indulge in. For what it’s worth, I think this is the best dish of Lau Pa Sat. The noodles were soft and well-seasoned, the sauce was thick and fragrant, the chicken bits were tender and juicy and the dish came together wonderfully. Definitely my pick!

Rong Ji Ban Mian & Fish Soup

Sunny Viet Vietnamese Food

Ban Mian: 2.4/5

Pho: 2.3/5

At a glance, the ban mian looked ordinary. The soup was bland and, while the ingredients such as ikan bilis were done well, they did not help to improve the dish. I would not come back for this dish.

I am quite new to Vietnamese cuisine but I was surprised at how bland this was. The stall owner is Vietnamese so I expected this dish to be authentic. I liked the soft, chewy pork but, all in all, it was too tasteless.

Jing Hua: 25 years of pleasing local palates The renowned Jing Hua restaurant has served home-style “honest-togoodness” cuisine over the past two decades

An Extensive Menu Not a dim-sum kind of person? Fret not, Jing Hua has an extensive menu to cater to the taste buds of everyone. There are signature dishes such as Noodles with Minced Pork and Soya Bean Sauce ($5+), the restaurant’s version of the famous Zha Jiang Mian, with a comforting, “lighter than usual” soybean sauce. The noodle strands were thick and light at the same time and, when combined with their trademark soybean sauce, gave us savoury mouthfuls.

After 25 years in Singapore, Jing Hua restaurant celebrates its humble beginnings as a nostalgic home-grown brand which serves original Jing Hua cuisine prepared from recipes passed down through two generations.

Original Cuisine for the Local Palate Jing Hua’s menu, which has remained unchanged since the beginning, is a true testament of how consistent quality can withstand the test of time. Over the years, Jing Hua has built a reputation for serving delicious homemade dumplings prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from Chinatown’s wet markets. Despite its successful business, Jing Hua has never ceased to listen to feedback from customers in order to refine the quality of its dumplings. The result is an original Jing Hua recipe, customised to suit local tastes. Popular dumpling varieties on the menu include the Pan-fried Mixed Seafood and Pork Dumplings ($8+ for 10), Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings ($7+ for 7) and Mixed Seafood & Pork Dumplings ($8+ for 10). The Most famous is the Little Juicy Steamed Meat Dumplings ($7+ for 7),

a plump parcel of minced pork, flavourful soup and thin but firm skin. These dumplings were the best among all the other dumplings served, and it is little wonder why diners – locals and tourists – flock back to Jing Hua to enjoy them.

How I became a whisky connoisseur All it took was one evening to make me a believer How do you turn into a whisky connoisseur overnight? I used to be clueless about peats, cask strength and related terminology. However, after attending Weekender’s exclusive Whisky Night, I emerged with an appreciation of these elegant malts.

A Night with the Singles

Held at The Black Swan, in the private mezzanine lounge named The Powder Room, the evening treated us to awardwinning single malts from superior Scottish distillery Glenfarclas. The night was young as we began with the flavourful 12- and 15-year-old singles.

By Eu Shuqi

The dumplings teased the eyes and the tongue

Old Gold Participants tasted great single malt whiskies and gained a deeper appreciation of them

For a sweet end to the meal, guests can opt for the Sweet Osmanthus Flower Rice Ball Soup ($3+), a dessert consisting of fragrant Osmanthus-infused soup and rice balls filled with peanuts, red bean paste, lotus and walnut paste, and black sesame. The rice balls were soft and chewy, with a burst of flavour on every mouthful. Paired with the Osmanthus-infused soup, we got a real winner. Last but not least, the Crispy Red Bean Pancake ($10+), is a must-try dish that is prepared a la minute, and exudes the aroma of charred sesame with every bite. Jing Hua Restaurant, 21 Neil Road, Singapore 088814

As we sipped our drams, experts from The Whisky Vault explained in detail the different notes that defined each whisky. Common remarks from other guests ranged from statements on the oak musk – a remnant from the whisky cask – to praise about how the whisky slid smoothly all the way down.

s avo u r t h e s i p

Floral Fragrance & Flavours

We then moved on to the highly-anticipated 21-year-old Glenfarclas, which lived up to its reputation of having a silky and velvetlike texture. I thought this was hard to beat. The 105 cask strength was the final whisky to be tasted. Having been bottled directly from the cask without dilution, this was the night’s most seductive malt. Those who partook of it certainly had no regrets. After all, it is rare to get the best whiskies in one place, let alone get to taste all of these, right up to the inimitable 105 cask strength.

Fine Couplings

The tasting was accompanied by canapés, which perfectly complemented the whisky selection. We shared in revelry over smoked meats and truffle fries, while taking in the best of Glenfarclas. If you missed out on the exclusive Weekender Whisky Night, don’t worry. Keep a lookout for similar upcoming events in Weekender and weekender.com.sg. The High Life

Perched high on the 12th floor of Carabelle condominium is a home that expertly meshes contemporary luxury with a good dose of casual comfort. Re-imagined by design firm Chew Interior, the apartment was designed to cater to the owner’s penchant for entertaining. It was also important to the owners that the towering vistas that the apartment is privy to are fully exploited.

Our popular segment returns to bring you more creative ideas for your home

State of Glamour Luxurious living is not just for landed homes, as this apartment proves. Most apparent is the plush button-tufted feature wall at the front of the living room, replacing standard laminated feature panels. A rich colour palette of cream and gold weaves its way throughout the living spaces. In all this, the design team was careful not to overdo things. For example, chandeliers that crown the living and dining areas were maintained at reasonable proportions.

Hang Loose Things start to loosen up in the balcony where the designers have created an outdoor lounge. A cheery sofa easily accommodates large groups of people as they sit and chat. Right next to this, the kitchen is conveniently kept open and available for preparing drinks and snacks. The panoramic view from this balcony makes this space a favourite among the family as well as guests.

Luxe Liaisons Each space in the home has been given due attention, not least of all the dining area. A variety of wall panels – carved mirror, wallpaper, timber panelling – creates an interesting nook for eating. It was a daring move to mix so many materials – warm with cool – in one area, and it certainly deviates from what one might expect of a modern classical look, but it was a risk that paid off.

Bedrooms are where individual family members can best express their personal taste, and in this home it is no different. The master bedroom, for example, follows the luxe look that was previously seen in the living spaces. The button-tufted feature panel makes an appearance again, this time as a headboard to the bed. The rest of the space sees a good mix of timber textures and burnished surfaces for a richly-composed room.

Specialities of Europe Europe has many draws including stunning architecture, fascinating history and the picturesque countryside; one of its finest aspects is its food

Many people travel the world to catch a glimpse of famous icons such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or the Acropolis of Athens. It’s nice to see these places but don’t you crave for a richer (or tastier) experience? Have you ever tried borscht soup, or wondered where it came from? Or have you wondered if the pasta you’re feasting on is authentic and Italy’s best offering? Whether for a food hunt around Europe or a quest for deeper (or quirkier) knowledge of the origins of your favourite food, we’re sharing with you a few specialities of the continent to get you started. Please don’t ask for French fries in France!

Germany

France

Specialities: Bratwurst, asparagus, beer

Specialities: Macarons, foie gras, French onion soup, assorted breads, champagne Not speciality: French fries

Germans love their meat and potatoes, so meals here are pretty heavy. The bratwurst is possibly one of Germany’s most popular meat products – it is a large pork (or chicken) sausage usually served as a main and coupled with sides such as sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), another speciality. There are different types of bratwurst – including cheese or curry (currywurst) – and it can also be served as bar snacks. Apart from sauerkraut, asparagus – particularly white asparagus – is a widely-eaten vegetable in Germany. These are usually topped with stock or Hollandaise sauce. And who can rule out German beer? From dunkel (dark lager) to weissbier (wheat beer), German beer has an international fan base. Oktoberfest should be on your bucket list!

Italy

It’s a fact that France is home to some of the world’s most lip-smacking dishes. From the simple aromatic baguette to exotic goose liver (foie gras), this country has produced all kinds of food movements. Yes, food movements. Examples include haute cuisine (“high”, traditional cuisine) and nouvelle cuisine – “‘new” cuisine that focuses on detail and presentation. French bubbly is also the most renowned in the world, so much that it has become the name of the drink itself. Champagne originates from the French region of its namesake. To connoisseurs, champagne is called “champagne” only if it comes from Champagne.

Specialities: Bruschetta, pizza, lasagne, almost all kinds of pasta Not specialities: Spaghetti Bolognese, Fettucine Alfredo, pepperoni pizza It might seem that all foods ending with a vowel originate from Italy. For the most part, it’s a good indicator. Pasta or bread slapped with dollops of meat or vegetable toppings such as bruschetta, pizza, and lasagne are indeed legitimate children of this fair country. But not all types of pasta and sauces are truly Italian. In fact, many of them can’t be found in Italy! For example, there’s no such thing as Spaghetti Bolognese in Bologna, or any other part of Italy. There is a similar dish, pasta con ragu (pasta with meat sauce), but not with this type of pasta that doesn’t hold the meat. Fettucine Alfredo is also more of a US invention than the traditional pasta with butter and Parmesan cheese. Still, there are many culinary gems in Italy and it’s no wonder what many people love most about Italy is the food!

Belgium Specialities: French fries, moules et frites, waffles, chocolates Contrary to popular belief, ‘French’ fries were not invented France. The dish came from Belgium. It is believed that US and British soldiers landed in Belgium during World War I and encountered the Belgian army, that spoke French, and wrongly thought that they were eating fries in France. Well, perhaps “French fries” is a lot catchier than “Belgian fries”. The dish of mussels and fries, or moules et frites, is accepted as Belgium’s national dish. Nonetheless, Belgium’s worldfamous desserts have not been lost in translation. Belgium is known for yummy Belgian chocolate as well as waffles. I don’t know about you but I’m charmed by the crispy exterior and warm, soft insides. All these only make me want to travel to Europe to discover what more sweet secrets there are. By Pamela Chow

Bucket List Exceptional ideas to experience in your lifetime

Walk across the colossal Capilano Canyon Vancouver is home to this giant suspension bridge and exciting paths to let you feel like walking on air Singapore may have its own share of treetop walks, but they are nothing compared to this colossal suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada. The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is one of the province of British Columbia’s top attractions, drawing visitors with its spectacular view of the cedar rainforest, dramatic cliffs, and a labyrinth of waterfalls. But it’s not just a regular walk in the park. Capilano has many exciting paths that extend beyond its bridge and down into the canyons below.

Over the Top Measuring about 140m long, the suspension bridge hangs at a safe 70m above the Capilano River. It was built in 1889 with hemp rope and cedar planks –

but don’t worry! It has since been upgraded into a more stable wire cable bridge. Go on a relaxing stroll across the Capilano bridge as in you take in the stunning sights before you. The emerald treetops tower into the sky all around, overtaken only by the magnificent snowcapped mountain range in the distance. The main bridge breaks off into seven suspension bridges snaking through the foliage. At a lower 30m above the forest floor, these walkways offer a squirrel’s-eye view of the forest.

Scale the Edge of the Cliff For an even more breathtaking experience, embark on the park’s new Cliffwalk route. This thrilling adventure offers an even more brilliant view – but it comes at a slightly elevated ‘price’. Compared to the main suspension bridge, which hangs 70m above the Capilano River, the Cliffwalk pathway takes you about 200m above the canyon floor! Furthermore, the sides of the walkway are transparent, heightening the sense of openness and vastness. And there are even several sections that open up to a glass floor, giving the illusion of walking on air. If you dare to scale this height, the rewards are well worth it. This path takes you through previously-unexplored areas of the park, where the quiet spots of lush greenery and waterfalls are hidden.

A Journey of Discovery Capilano Park also offers an exciting Cap Kids adventure programme, which is sure to pique their interest in Mother Nature. The Rainforest Explorers Programme is highly engaging and interactive, allowing kids of all ages to explore the rainforest and collect research data for their kit. Kids
