NEW ON TV

The clash of Goliaths

There are several interesting clashes this week, including between prominent clubs or those in top form. Among them, Tottenham faces Manchester United and Chelsea faces Southampton. In the highlight of the rest of the matches this week, underdog Burnley goes up against another Goliath club, Manchester City.

Arsenal vs West Ham United (14 Mar, 11pm) In a game with very little for West Ham to look optimistic about, Arsenal will be hoping to take advantage of its opponent’s recent poor run of form. The currently 10th-placed Hammers have taken a mere three points from their last five Premier League matches. On the other side of the field, the Hammers face an Arsenal team that has hardly looked stronger this season. With four wins from the last five league matches, and an FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Manchester United, manager Arsene Wenger and his Gunners might be looking at this week’s match as a mere formality. Prediction: Arsenal 2 – 0 West Ham

Burnley vs Manchester City (15 Mar, 1.30am) Manchester City cannot afford to drop points if it wants to hold on to any hope of catching league leaders Chelsea, especially against bottom teams like Burnley. City will be sure not to hold back this time after an embarrassing 2–2 draw when the two met earlier in the season.

Equally in dire need for three points, Burnley will be hoping for a repeat of the stellar performance against City in order to keep its battle to avoid relegation going. It sits precariously in 19th place and is not looking like a survivor at the moment. Prediction: Burnley 0–2 Manchester City

Chelsea vs Southampton (15 Mar, 9.30pm) Chelsea was yet another team to face the wrath of Burnley’s tough spirit, taking away just one point from their clash last month. Now five points clear at the top with a game in hand, it’s all about focus and consistency to see the title chase through. Southampton has fallen from the top tier in recent weeks, having taken seven points from the last five games. It is still a very manageable climb back into European football for this season’s surprise package and taking one or three points off the league leaders could once again kick-start the Saints’ quest. Prediction: Chelsea 1-0 Southampton

Manchester United vs Tottenham (16 Mar, 12am) Together with rival Arsenal, Manchester United is now just an arm’s length from City and Chelsea. Perhaps it might be too big a gap to close at this point of the season but, apart from a blip against Arsenal in the FA Cup, van Gaal’s men do not seem to be letting up. Their opponent this week is 6th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, which has had a pretty ordinary season. Now, with only two league positions and three points’ difference between them, Spurs are hoping that this is the week they once again reclaim their place in the top four. Prediction: Manchester Utd 2-1 Tottenham By Basil Lee

In a Premier League weekend of giants clashing with one another and minnows who appear about to be slain, how much further is your favourite team inching up the Premier League table?

Meet “Asia’s Got Talent” judges David Foster & Van Ness Wu

In the finale of our three-part preview for the biggest talent competition in the world, we meet the series’ two male celebrity judges As we get set for the debut of the new “Asia’s Got Talent”, first on AXN (StarHub TV Ch 511) on Mar 12 at 8.05pm, the spotlight remains on the judges who determine the semi-finalists through the first five episodes. “Big Sam” Allardyce has led the Hammers to a decent run of form

David Foster discovered and launched some of the greatest music careers including that of Michael Bublé, Josh Groban and Celine Dion. He created hit songs and award-winning platinum and gold albums for Earth, Wind & Fire, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Chicago, Hall & Oates, Brandy, ‘N Sync, Boz Scaggs and Gloria Estefan; propelled classical singers like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban into mainstream popularity, as well as created soundtracks for films like The Bodyguard, Urban Cowboy and St Elmo’s Fire. In 2008 and 2011, David performed and hosted his own star-studded “Foster & Friends” concerts in Las Vegas to celebrate the music from his career, and toured Asia annually from 2010 to 2012. David has won 16 Grammy Awards from 47 nominations and is the chairman of Verve Music Group.

Pop Idol & Actor

Photo: mooinblack / Shutterstock.com

Van Ness Wu was born in California where he took classes in performing arts, acting and languages in Hollywood before moving to Taiwan at 21 to build his career. His breakthrough came with his lead role in the wildly-popular hit idol drama “Meteor Garden” and its sequels. Van Ness and his co-actors of the series formed the pop idol group F4 – now known as JVKV – and released three studio albums. They have enjoyed great success, especially in Asia. Turning his attention to his solo career, Van Ness released his debut solo album in 2002 and followed that with six other solo

studio albums until 2013, as well as singles, collaborating with musicians including Kanye West, Beyonce, Wang Lee Hom, Gangta and Coco Lee. Van Ness also acted in many other TV series, including “Autumn Concerto”, “Material Queen” and “Peach Girl”, as well as movies such as Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon and Kung Fu Chefs. He recently appeared in Dragon Blade, starring Jackie Chan.

Judges Still Have the Power In “Asia’s Got Talent”, regardless of the performance – song, dance, magic, acrobats to any imaginable talent – each group and individual act must win at least three “Yeses” from the four celebrity judges, or they are on their way home. The inaugural season of “Asia’s Got Talent” promises to be full of excitement “Asia’s Got Talent” is presented by Marina Bay Sands, Big Cola, Pantene, Caltex, Jetstar and GrabTaxi. Don’t miss the momentous first season of “Asia’s Got Talent” starting 12 Mar, 8.05pm, with subsequent episodes airing in its regular Thu, 8.30pm slot, first on AXN, StarHub TV Ch 511.

What new dimension will Disney’s NEW live-action cinderella bring to the classic story?

Y

ou know the tale of Cinderella: an orphaned girl, Ella, is abused by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. But with the help of her fairy godmother and a pair of shoes even Christian Louboutin would drool over, Ella meets the Prince of the Kingdom and they live happily ever after. But Disney’s newest live-action film promises to bring a totally new emphasis to the timeless fairytale that we thought we were already familiar with.

Lily James of “Downton Abbey” and Wrath of the Titans stars as Cinderella, the orphan girl who wins the heart of a prince

Old Tale, New Tricks First of all, it’s directed by the acclaimed Kenneth Branagh, who has helmed movies from Shakespearean classic Much Ado About Nothing (1993) to Marvel blockbuster Thor (2011). Perhaps inspired by his work on Thor, this time Branagh wants to push kindness as a superpower. I think expecting a superhero to suddenly start waxing Old English is a bit of a stretch. It seems we’re going to have to look elsewhere for movie magic: within the characters themselves.

m ov ie p re v ie w

A fairytale come alive Far Left: The evil stepmother is explored in greater detail in this live-action adaptation

Beyond the Classic Cartoon This live-action version of Cinderella is going to give us a lot more than the cartoon did – and not just real people with real expressions. Almost like never-before-seen footage, we’ll be treated to scenes of Ella with her mother and father, whom we never got to meet in the original 1950 animation. These scenes reveal how Ella becomes defined by courage and kindness. Scriptwriter Chris Weitz said, “I thought it was important that the audience see her (Ella’s mother), and experience not only Ella’s loss of her but what she gained from her.” And Branagh introduces an interesting dynamic between Ella and her stepmother. Producer David Barron explains, “Cinderella’s journey mirrors that of the Stepmother, in that both endure loss and heartbreak but it’s the choices they make which differentiates them. She could easily have become bitter and angry like her Stepmother… but she chooses goodness.”

Wish Upon a Star Cinderella sports an impressive line-up of actors, from Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett (as the stepmother) to BAFTA Award-winner Helena Bonham Carter. You may be surprised to learn this: Bonham Carter appears decked out in blond hair and a blinding white frock as the benevolent Fairy Godmother! Bonham Carter is known for her madcap roles as Harry Potter villain Bellatrix Lestrange, the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). Yet here she appears as a kind and loving sprite, waving and flicking her wand (yet not to cast a death curse). This alone is an amusing transformation that I can’t wait to see.

Left: Weird and wacky! Helena Bonham Carter, known for her zany roles, now stars as the generous and helpful Fairy Godmother

Asterix: Good Gauls! The Romans must be crazy Bestselling Works

Asterix, the titular hero of the popular comic series, must crack his brains to prevent the erasure of his Gaul clan

The popular comic book series Asterix once again comes to the big screen in this winning animation, which opened to rave reviews in France Good news for fans of Asterix and humorous comics – Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods, adapted from the best-selling French-Belgian Asterix comic series, has come to our big screens this weekend. Doesn’t this bring back nostalgia for old comic books and Gaulish warrior antics? The story goes, ruthless tyrant Julius Caesar plans to crush a commune of brave Gauls by building an intimidating Roman city, “The Mansions of the Gods”, around the village and forcing them to assimilate.

Closely following the 17th book in the Asterix comic series, the movie was released in France at the end of 2014. It ranked No. 1 at the French box office, nudging Hollywood blockbuster films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Interstellar down to second and fourth place. The film also outperformed other popular animated movies in its opening weekend, including Frozen (2013) and Monsters, Inc (2001)! If you’re worried about how your favourite warriors will appear on screen, The Hollywood Reporter’s critic Jordan Mintzer praises the movie for its “smooth animation style and winning humour”.

Victory for the gauls With the legacy of the popular “Asterix” comics backing it up, it’s no wonder the movie performed so well. The series has been translated into more than 100 languages, and has sold about 325 million copies worldwide. It is arguably France’s most popular book. Did you know that there’s even an Asterix theme park – Parc Astérix – near Paris? That’s how well-liked the world of Asterix is! So whether Asterix accompanied you during your childhood or has just been introduced to you, this loveable animation is certainly one to catch. By Pamela Chow

Holding out for a Hero Gaulish warrior hero Asterix and his best friend Obelix can’t just stand by and watch their home be so mercilessly invaded by the bothersome Romans. Despite their schemes to halt Caesar’s malicious approach, the Land of the Gods is quickly encroaching upon the Gauls. The Romans begin filtering into the village, wreaking havoc in Asterix’s peaceful home. What ingenious plan will Asterix and Obelix be able to hatch before Caesar’s metropolis exterminates the Gauls forever?

Angeline Yap and Vivienne Tseng gained fame and notoriety for their seductive and scheming roles in local film Lang Tong

With the public release of controversial local erotic thriller Lang Tong, we find out more from the film’s leading actresses who bared a lot of skin for their roles PLEASE NOTE: SOME CONTENT IN THIS ARTICLE IS UNSUITABLE FOR THE YOUNG It’s stuffed full of steamy sex scenes, featuring actresses Angeline Yap and Vivienne Tseng baring their bodies for multiple racy acts, but Lang Tong may not simply be a senseless pornographic movie. Lang Tong’s cast and director, Sam Loh, stand firmly by the belief that it is a daring move for local film. The story follows Casanova conman Zack (William Lawandi), whose latest target is the alluring businesswoman Li Ling (Tseng). But when Zack gets hooked by her nymphet younger sister Li’er (Yap), he is coerced into a sinister scheme. Weekender speaks to the two leading ladies to find out what they think about getting nude for the world – especially new mom Vivienne!

What made you agree to take on these racy roles?

How did you research and get motivated for your character? A: I did some homework before filming. I went to watch similar music videos and movies, and it helped me get into character. V: I drew a lot (of inspiration) from real life. I fantasise about sex, and I’ve seen several gory movies where I’ve wondered what it’s like to be in that role.

What do you think of Fifty Shades of Grey? A: It was quite nice, but I felt like the movie was all about sex. Not like Lang Tong! V: I’m actually staying away from watching it. I read some parts of the book and I think what it’s expounding is quite disturbing.

Vivienne, what does your husband think about your role? V: He was most worried about whether I was comfortable, and whether the crew was being professional. You can’t help but feel you’re being judged. But Sam’s crew was completely professional.

Angeline: I took a while to consider if I should accept this challenge. But I felt that it’s okay (to do the explicit scenes), because this is an art film. Vivienne: When Sam first approached me he had a lot of ideas – and they all involved nudity. For the right role, just like Angeline said, I would do it. I think he sensed that I was the kind of girl who would want to chop things up!

What was your takeaway from Lang Tong?

What were your first reactions to Lang Tong’s scintillating script? A: The ending is very different from local movies, and the whole storyline has a different twist. V: (Evil laughter) Yes! Finally, a girl gets revenge on the guys. That’s why Sam chose me for the role!

A: I would be more open-minded, but I’d also teach them what’s right and wrong. (Going nude on camera) for the sake of art, there’s nothing wrong because it’s just acting. V: I have an image of myself as a liberal, open-minded parent. But when it comes down to it, I might end up being a little on the conservative side. On shooting a nude film, if it’s a girl, I would seriously look at the script.

What’s your favourite part of Lang Tong?

What are you working on that fans can look out for?

A: The lesbian scene. It’s something I’ve never done before, so it was rather challenging. V: I thought the bathroom scene was very nicely done, it looked good. I also liked the opening scenes – with the slow-motion cutting – it was very “Dexter”.

Are you similar to your character in any way? A: We’re both open-minded and daring. But Li’er is more scheming; I’ve encountered guys like Zack before but I wouldn’t take revenge through such extreme measures! Also, in a relationship, I’m a more submissive woman rather than dominant. V: Women are just schemers! I think we’ve all secretly thought about doing (violent) things.

A: Girls are not weak. People always see guys as the stronger gender, but girls are also strong. V: Girls should stand up for themselves. You should think about protecting yourself – albeit with less extreme measures!

Do you think you’d be a liberal or conservative parent?

A: I’m doing some modelling events while working as a financial consultant. V: I’ve been asked to go to Myanmar to be the face of a social campaign and a new gym! I’m really looking forward to that – it’ll combat my image as a mother. I’m also going to do more stunt training to specialise in action and stunt acting. By Pamela Chow

Lang Tong is in cinemas now, with an R21 rating.

Perched on the 45th floor overlooking downtown Singapore, Sear, a new modern American Steakhouse adds greater dimension to Singapore’s culinary landscape The signs of the affluence of Singaporeans continue to increase. You can tell that we are doing well, when steakhouses pop-up everywhere, whether in industrial estates, heartland estates or malls. We are spoiled for choice with all the establishments in different locations, as well as in the beef varieties and types of preparation in Singapore. Furthermore, expansion has recently taken on a new dimension – altitude. Steakhouses are rising to top, literally. Sear, open since December, joins a number of other steakhouses seeking prestige by offering towering views of the city along with cuts of rib eye, sirloin, and tenderloin steaks.

Impressive Start A wonderful appetiser to kick off an impressive meal is Sear’s “Angie’s Ocean Platter” ($68 for two persons, $128 for 3 to 4 persons) consisting of Maine Boston lobster, jumbo shrimp cocktail, diver scallop ceviche, oysters in the half-shell, and Alaska King Crab legs. This two-tier platter comes from Sear’s neighbour on the 45th floor, Angie’s Seafood Restaurant, which is also owned by the people who own Sear.

Freshness Needs No Introduction A premium place such as Sear will only serve the freshest seafood. Indeed, all of the seafood was infused with a clean, simple, sweet taste of the sea. The flesh of the seafood was succulent,

tender, and soft. What blew me away was its French Tsarskaya (“The Pearl of Tsars”) oysters. Named in honour of the Russian Monarchs, who favoured the oysters harvested in Cancale, France, these gems are large, meaty mouthfuls, tender yet firm to the bite with the consistency of a good medium-rare steak. They were absolutely delicious! At $52 for six (if ordered as an entrée), it’s a king’s ransom but it is a dish worthy of a king! I highly recommend to anyone who loves oysters, to give Tsarskayas a try

Bone Marrow Delicacy Bone marrow isn’t my cup of tea. The texture of it was a bit too gooey and gelatinous for me. The taste was too bland or subtle, and easily overpowered by the garnishing. Nonetheless, it was a very delicate and competently-made dish. It is just one of those polarizing dishes with strong, distinctive character – you either love it or hate it.

A Different Type of Grill Sear was quick to mention that it uses two 4,500kg Pira Charcoal Grills to “achieve only the best ‘sear’ on the outside”. There isn’t much information on the Net about Pira Charcoal Grills in terms of imparting better flavour or presentation, except that the grill “is the perfect combination between a barbecue and an oven, merging… the better of two options”, saving 40 per cent more charcoal and cooking 35 per cent faster than open grills. It also traps dripping grease, which prevents flare ups and over-chars. Okay, sounds interesting enough. Let’s see what my taste buds say.

Back to the Steaks We were presented with three Pira-grilled steaks, at medium doneness. First, the rib eye from Australian Angus Jacks Creek Wagyu (S$70, 250g). Second, the tenderloin

from Canadian Western Countries Cross Angus (S$78, 250g). Lastly, the sirloin from Wakanui Hormone-Free 21 Days Aged New Zealand Hereford Cattle (S$88, 300g). All three came out similar – with a pale light brown tone with grill markings. Of the three, only the sirloin had the iconic crosshatch marking. I thought the colour was a bit pale. Usually, the steaks I experienced are of a deeper, darker colour, which is a good sign of more flavours from the browning. (i.e. Maillard Reaction.) Served in slices, the colour of the inside of the steaks was a beautiful sensuous pink with no blood at all – a perfect medium doneness, for all three steaks. The tenderloin was the most tender. However, the rib eye was the most flavourful. It had the beefy flavour and its marbling made the texture soft yet firm. The sirloin was good as well, and its flavour fell somewhere within the spectrum. Even though the steaks were tasty, I couldn’t help but to wonder if it would be better with more browning. Perhaps with the Pira Grill, the steaks cooked faster overall and didn’t have more time to brown on the outside like a traditional open grill.

Sauces Galore Sear provides an impressive array of sauces for their steaks for diners who need additional flavour: Pommery Mustard, Seaweed Butter, Five-type Peppercorn, Bordelaise with soft bone marrow, Chimichurri, Salsa Verde, Béarnaise, Sriracha & Tomato Salsa, and Daikon Ponzu They are all very good. But, I prefer to savour the taste of premium steaks and its charcoal flavour on its own. After all, isn’t that why we go to great steakhouses in the first place?

Beef Tasting Adventure Unless you have $6,000 to spend on Sear’s Specialty Cut, which consists of 2kg of

certified Kobe beef (A4 grade) and 300g of vintage caviar, I would go for the “Tasting Trio”, which includes the Tenderloin, Sirloin and Rib Eye for $95. Sear also has very reasonable twoand three-course lunch sets, $29 and $36 respectively, for those who want a top-of-theworld experience at relatively down-to-earth prices. Sifu debuted in Singapore with inspiration from the Hong Kong dining scene, to bring a reinvented take on the East-meets-West classic quick meals. Striving to challenge the boundaries of casual dining, this caférestaurant offers a modern and relaxing sit-down ambience suitable for dinner dates and group gatherings alike, complete with the delicious aromas of freshly-baked pillow buns from its in-house bunnery. In line with Sifu’s philosophy of all-things handmade, dishes are made by the chefs and bakers from scratch, from fish pockets to dumplings alike. From Hong Kong’s favourite beef stew and noodle dishes to all-day dimsum items, Sifu brings customers a variety of comfort meals at affordable prices.

Good things come in sets or, in the case of SET, in sets of six courses – from starters to desserts, we love them all. Resting on the curve between Orchard and Bugis at PoM, we enjoyed the food at the tasting from the first course. 1 Selegie Road #02-01, PoMo, Singapore 188306

Ever wondered if you could try Argentinian food? Now you can have a taste of Argentina, right here on our shores – and at a pictureperfect restaurant, no less. Not content with being famous just for its meats (which is why you never need to cry for it at Bochinche) Chef Diego gamely presents a refreshed menu. This new approach to the menu brims with creativity, offering an array of dishes that proudly showcases diverse produce and styles of cooking.

Lively ambience Bochinche looks like “art studio meets hipster cafe”. With its loud, expressive signboards and smart, punny pillow and chair cushion cases with slogans such as “Don’t Cry For Meat Argentina”, this is easily one of the liveliest establishments I’ve been to in a while. The indoor seating was comfortably-spaced and creatively-designed, while the outdoor seating was toasty and laid back.

cheery chimichurri burger The Chimichurri burger immediately reminded me of the bubbly Mary Poppins’ Song, Chim Chim Cheree. The generous serving of the burger matched the cheery mood the tune put me in, with its slightly sweet provolone cheese, crunchy bacon and well-seasoned egg coming together in each delicious bite. A special mention has to go to the lightlysalted bun too.

Don’t cry for meat The Bife Ancho was a satisfactory serving of rib eye steak. The juicy 300g steak was unaccompanied by any sides and was sliced into five parts. It had a nice, chewy bite and was well-balanced. While it was slightly oversalted, it was still superb, carrying with it a very distinctive aftertaste. I ordered one of their signature brunch cocktails, the Spicy Lolitha. It was, surprisingly, not as spicy as the name implied. Still, it was quite a harsh drink and didn’t go well with any of my mains. I look forward to trying their other cocktails!

Two-sided Issue The room adjacent to the master bedroom has been converted into an efficient walk-in wardrobe cum study area. The latter is cleverly positioned to look out the windows and away from the wardrobe for the most conducive work setting possible.

Tunnel Vision Playing up the linear arrangement of the communal spaces, the designers tied the dining area and the living area together with a single wall treatment – a dark, pigmented cement finish. The look is raw and organic and contrasts nicely with the polished wall of mirrors across the room. Accented by bands of cove lighting, the mirror wall not only serves as a feature, but also helps to create the illusion of depth.

Mirror Mirror The use of mirrors in the home is very deliberate. Here, they are used for two purposes: to create a sophisticated and urbane look, and to help expand spaces visually. Not just used in the dining area, tinted mirrors turn the corner into the passageway to the bedrooms. Tight spaces like these really benefit from the shiny, reflective properties of the mirror.

Dark Beauty

Take It Lightly

Despite its pristine, don’t-touch-me look, glossy surfaces are ideal for the kitchen. They are usually easy to clean, and make it easy to spot spills and stains. In this kitchen, dark glossy finishes also go a long way in framing a chic cooking space. Keeping things practical, frameless glass panels conceal a full-height pantry. And to balance out the dark hues, the backsplash behind the stove and wash area is kept pristine white. This way, it also reflects the cove lighting to the rest of the kitchen.

The master bedroom is pared and comforting in its simplicity. A customised bed frame features little more than an integrated up-light in its headboard. When turned on, the light bathes the wall, highlighting the subtle pattern of the wallpaper. Direct lighting is avoided in this space as the designers lean towards the softer feel of cove lighting.

Leather or Fabric – How to choose the sofa that’s right for you

Got It Covered Leather Sofa Set

Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or need a change of furniture, a few tips on what to get can be handy – we tell you if a leather or fabric couch suits you The sofa is the centrepiece of any living room. It represents the focal point when guests come over to visit. To arrive at the right choice of sofa for you and your home, you need to consider a few points. Select the most ideal sofa that exemplifies your style best, without compromising on comfort for you and your beloved family. When it comes to buying a sofa, the question that most people face is: Fabric or leather? Here are some useful tips or pointers to help you to make an informed decision in buying a new sofa.

On Getting a Leather Sofa • Full leather sofas are the perfect choice as they have the highest level of durability over a long time, maximum comfort and a classy finish, which means that they typically cost more. • On the contrary, there are different “real leather” options based on your need or budget, resulting in more affordable combinations of leather types and leather alternatives. e.g. “Half Leather” and “Simulated Leather” upholstery. • Extend the life of and care for your new leather sofa – upholstery leather is different from fashion and garment leathers (shoes, bags, jackets, etc.) and must be cared for regularly to deliver the best performance. • Never use general cleaning products as these may permanently damage the leather.

After vacuuming, only use proprietary cleaning and leather-care products – such as the Courts Ultimate Care Kit (S$49) – that has been specifically created for upholstery leather care.

On Getting a Fabric Sofa • If you’re the type who loves for your room to express your mood, then fabric sofas would be more ideal for you. • Start with the colour range of your room (warm, cool, neutral or bright) and pick a fabric colour that goes with it. • Then, decide on the pattern – whether you want plain or textured. Large patterns and bright colours tend to dominate. • Most importantly, how well will your selected fabric type cope with your sofa’s location and family’s lifestyle? •

Many of Courts’ fabric sofas feature removable covers so that you can easily change and refresh the look of your favourite sofa without actually buying a whole new set!

To create beautiful spaces, we need beautiful materials. EDL’s Cover Everything portfolio brings inspirational designs that go beyond the surface. The multi-faceted, three-dimensional nature of the company’s new High Pressure Laminates (HPL) showcases the potential in every space. The R-Series of HPL aims to bring you closer to nature. Also known as the Ridge-Series, this new collection of laminates boasts tactile grooves and patterned grains that evoke the natural splendour of wood. www.edleuro.com

Take a Back Seat

• In maintaining your fabric sofa, apart from spot cleaning with specialised Upholstery Fabric Care products such as the Courts Ultimate Care Kit (S$49), just vacuum your furniture regularly and rotate the cushions.

Top Italian furniture brand Gamma knows how to craft exquisite sectional sofas that are a huge hit in Singapore. The new Twist sofa continues to hit the mark with its hard wood frame, plush cushions, reinforced elastic seat suspensions and sexy chrome legs. The back cushions are outfitted with an air spring mechanism, so you can lift them up to create a cushier backrest.

• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and arrange periodical cleaning using a professional upholstery care or cleaning service.

Bucket List Exceptional ideas to experience in your lifetime

Left: Much marine life can be seen flitting about in a shipwreck

Search for sunken treasure Coral reefs aren’t the only fascinating sight to dive for in Australian waters – try hunting for sunken treasure instead

The Ruins of History The oldest-recorded shipwreck is that of the English vessel “Trial”, lost in 1622 off the northwestern coast of Western Australia. A number of Australia’s shipwrecks are especially popular because of their international significance. The Dutch East India Company has lost a number of vessels to the Western Australia coast.

Did you know how many shipwrecks can be found around Australia’s waters? Australian Geographic reports that there are nearly 8,000 shipwrecks registered around the country, and only a quarter have been found! The wrecks range in age from as early as the 17th Century. Each state even has a historic shipwreck agency dedicated to documenting these sites. With all these aged vessels and their hidden treasures lying at the bottom of the ocean, it’d be a waste not to scavenge for some valuable items. So plunge deep into the sea and you might uncover a prized relic or two!

The Best Diving Spots The SS Yongala is by far rated by diving enthusiasts as one of the best dive sites in the world. The 110-metre freight steamer disappeared during a cyclone in 1911 and went undiscovered until 1954. It lies 30m below the surface, and divers can spot schools of marine wildlife – from octopuses to white tip reef sharks.

Right: You’ll never know what treasure you might find that lies forgotten on the seabed

This wreck is recommended for advanced divers due to the strong currents. It’s one hour’s drive south of Townsville, followed by a 30-minute boat ride. Beginners may want to try diving the SS Orizaba, which beached on the shallow waters of Rockingham in 1905. The intact boilers and hull create interesting caves and crevices to observe marine life flitting about. The SS Orizaba is located in Rockingham, an hour’s drive from Perth and 20 minutes by boat.

Keepsakes from Beneath When exploring these underwater wonderlands, you may be lucky enough to stumble upon a relic amidst the ruins. Sadly you can’t keep the little souvenir, as it’s against Australian law to disturb or remove items from historic shipwrecks without a

permit. Instead, notify the respective state or territory historic shipwreck agency within 30 days. If you’re interested in possessing a shipwreck keepsake, you can purchase one that’s legally in circulation – with a registration certificate – from dealers or collectors. But the way I see it, the rare and adventurous experience of wandering through and exploring a shipwreck is a treasure in itself! By Pamela Chow

Walking into the horizon In our new section, we show you the best places on Earth for that idyllic travel snapshot Our general impression of Mexico has been spoilt by the movies. This is the lesser-known side of the country that not many get to see – and, boy, is it perfect. Imagine stepping onto these wooden planks that seem to lead you away from all your troubles and toward your happily ever after in the horizon! Jetties like these can be found on the beaches scattered throughout Isla Mujeres in Cancun, Mexico. Major beaches here are located on the North and West ends, where serene emerald waves coast onto soft shores. You can get to Isla Mujeres from the mainland by ferry – simply purchase tickets for the Ultramar Ferry (or Isla Mujeres Ferry) at the Ferry Dock. The journey will take you past the Bay of Mujeres, giving you a stunning view of the Mexican coastline.
