EPL: Chasing the impossible? With less than ten games to the end of the Premier League season, can Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United stage any kind of comeback? While Chelsea has not been in the best of form, having drawn with Southampton and being dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Paris St Germain on the away goals rule, it still appears to have a lead over its rivals in the title chase. Can the teams in the chasing pack catch up, or at least stake their claim on a coveted higher position (and UEFA league qualification)? With only a point separating most contenders, it is a tight and tense race to the finish line.
Manchester City vs West Bromwich Albion (21 Mar, 8.45pm) After its nightmare loss against Burnley, Manchester City is as close as it gets to a title-contender to Chelsea. City is currently six points behind and Chelsea has a game in hand. The Citizens need to find some form of consistency in their undoubtedly talented team. West Brom has been in respectable form, having taken three wins from its last five matches. The Citizens need no less than the full three points if they are going to stay in title contention. Manchester City 2–1 West Brom
Liverpool vs Manchester United (22 Mar, 9.30pm) Considering the result the last time these two met, it is certainly set to be an interesting fixture. Manchester United has been transformed since last season, thanks to Dutch mastermind Louis van Gaal. Coming fresh off a glorious win against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, van Gaal’s men will be looking to push on to greater things despite this significant hurdle. Liverpool appears to be in amazing form too, with four wins and a draw from its last five league games. Also gunning for the reward of Champions League football next season, will the Reds be able to summon enough gumption to reverse the previous result? At Anfield, they have a strong chance. Prediction: Liverpool 2–2 Manchester United
Hull City vs Chelsea (23 Mar, 12am) It may just be business as usual for Mourinho’s men against minnows Hull City. Chelsea will be sure not to fall to the underdogs so far behind them in the table. The title truly appears to be in the Blues’ hands now, and they have no reason to finish this season with anything less, European capitulation or otherwise. Prediction: Hull City 0-2 Chelsea
By Basil Lee
Newcastle United vs Arsenal (21 Mar, 11pm) Champions League aside, it’s a great time to be an Arsenal fan, having recently seen off Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final, and having gone on a run of five wins in the last five league matches. Newcastle has not been in impressive form by any measure of the word. Having just one win from the last five league games, the Toons remain apathetic about their current results as they sit comfortably away from relegation but far enough from the top of the table to be motivated. Prediction: Newcastle 1–3 Arsenal
Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester City must be feeling the pressure – can they do the impossible and foil Chelsea’s party?

Insurgent:
tearing up a postapocalyptic world
Clockwise from Top: Brainwashed Dauntless troops on the hunt for Divergents in the city, under the command of the Erudite elite; The Divergent Series: Insurgent opens the world up to the audience, showing us the different lives of each faction of Chicago; Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her lover, Four, are forced on the run when they are exposed as dangerous Divergents
Taking dystopia to the next level, the Divergent Series’ latest instalment sets itself apart from other post-apocalypSE films
W
hat a time to be alive. We’ve been spoiled with a host of brilliant dystopian genre book-turnedfilms, from the heart-thumping Hunger Games to the shocking Maze Runner. Now, Divergent has presented itself as a strong contender for the hearts of post-apocalypse fiction lovers; and this sequel, Insurgent, guarantees to take it to the next level.
Diverge What? The merciless leader of the Erudite faction, Jeannine (Kate Winslet), will stop at nothing to capture Divergents like Tris and Four
It starts with Tris being chased, and the action never lets up. We built the world in Divergent and now, in Insurgent, we tear it up.
If you’ve forgotten what Divergent’s about – or if you’ve been living in a bubble – here’s a quick catch-up. Set in a walled Chicago in ruins, the Divergent universe is split into five factions of survivors. Humans who test positive for more than one faction are considered dangerous Divergents, as they are independent thinkers who cannot be controlled by any faction. Protagonist Beatrice “Tris” Prior (reprised by Shailene Woodley), who grew up as a selfless member of Abnegation, learns that she is Divergent, and attempts to conceal it by assimilating into the Dauntless faction. However, she and her partner Four (Theo James) are exposed as Divergents, and they are now forced to flee from the powerhungry leader (Kate Winslet) of the elite Erudite faction.
A World of Dirty Secrets Insurgent picks up just three days after the end of the first film, Divergent. As the aggressive Dauntless troops prowl the alleys of Chicago to flush out Divergents, Tris and Four must steal through the city to find allies hidden among the other factions. Guilt-ridden by the violent deaths of her family and friends, Tris also unravels the frightening secret behind her identity, and why the Erudite leaders will doggedly hunt her down to the ends of the earth.
The Divergents, headed by Four (centre) and Tris (left), must traverse the city undercover to gather allies against the elite militia
Non-Stop Action Interestingly, Insurgent promises to be wildly different from its predecessor, Divergent – the movie will be pumped to the brim with action, leaving the audience in perpetual excitement and suspense. Producer Douglas Wick said, “It starts with Tris being chased, and the action never lets up. We built the world in Divergent and now, in Insurgent, we tear it up.” For us, that means more eye-popping scenes and wonderful settings, from the beautiful to the terrifying. When Tris discovers the chilling plans that the Erudite elites have in store for Divergents like her, she is thrown into a realm of terror that she is forced to survive. And with Tris and Four traversing the ruins of Chicago, we’re treated to a journey through all the unique environments of each faction. Wick pointed out, “We start off in the beautiful lush fields, honeycomb beehive dome and signature Tree of Amity… and finally we check out the depths of the Erudite world inside a high-tech lab.” Hmm, that might sound a lot like other dystopian worlds we’ve seen but I’m willing to give this one a shot. As its series title promises, it might be divergent from the other movies of its kind. By Pamela Chow

Based on a true story, these childhood friends turn kidnappers
Kidnapping Freddy Heineken: As tasty as its namesake?
Worth It Or Not
This dramatic thriller is based on one of the most notorious kidnapping cases in history, but is it worth a ticket to watch on the big screen? Kidnapping Freddy Heineken transports you back to 1983, to the abduction of Dutch billionaire brewery magnate Freddy Heineken and his chauffeur. Daniel Alfredson, who also directed The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, depicts his take on the kidnapping case that took place back then.
Perfect Plan, But Perfect Plot? Kidnapping Freddy Heineken sounds like it’s geared up to be one crazy action movie but on the surface it looks a little ordinary or to be expected. But perhaps it’s not. Being the second movie adaptation of the story (The Heineken Kidnapping was produced in Holland in 2011), the film’s writer, William Brookfield, made sure to create the film as accurately as possible when
Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins gives us a good show
he adapted Peter R de Vries’ extensive 1987 book, The Kidnapping of Freddy Heineken. The film is set in Amsterdam, where the kidnapping took place. Being in dire financial straits after their construction business encounters certain obstacles, the group of old friends finds itself coming up with an audacious plan as a solution to their monetary woes, which seems to go surprisingly well. Finding initial success, they then moved on and ‘upgraded’ to the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken. This ‘upgrade’ means a larger profit and, of course, a higher degree of risk. Throughout the whole abduction process, experience the emotional rollercoaster and uncertainty the group faces. And get ready to escape Amsterdam with them as they attempt to run away with the ransom of 35 million guilders (US$50 million).
The Faces Behind the Masks All can agree that the actors portraying the characters are crucial in evoking the emotions of the audience. And what a cast put together by the producers! Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins was speedily snapped up and cast as the victim, Freddy Heineken. Known for outstanding performances in films such as Fracture, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and many more, we can be sure to expect a certain depth of character and a convincing portrayal. The rest of the main cast includes heartthrobs Jim Sturgess, Sam Worthington and Ryan Kwanten. Known for their stunning performances in Across the Universe, Clash of the Titans and “True Blood” respectively, expect these young studs to draw you into the plot.
When you combine a multi-faceted plot with a bunch of incredibly-talented actors, the result will either blow your mind or be a huge disappointment. If you’re a risk taker, do catch the movie. But if a blockbuster is the only kind of movie that satisfies you, Kidnapping Freddy Heineken might not be your cup of tea. By Rydell Tan

Singapore’s hidden treasures: 6 National monuments you may not know We’ve got quite a collection of impressive national monuments, some hidden in plain sight – see which you know
The clock tower in Chinese High School was used by the British as an observation post during World War II
3. Chinese High School Clock Tower Building Gazetted in: March 1999
Do you know how many national monuments there are in Singapore? The National Heritage Board has gazetted a total of 70 buildings and structures – and you might be passing them by every day without even knowing! These architectural wonders are preserved for their significant value in Singapore’s history. Will any of them catch you by surprise?
1. The Cathay Gazetted in: February 2003
ALS O I N T HE AT R E S Little Big Master [PG] Based on a true story, this film is about an enthusiastic principal, Hung, who fiercely believes in running a kindergarten for underprivileged children. Overcoming financial and social setbacks, Hung’s story is one of love, sacrifice and determination. STARRING: Miriam Yeung & Louis Koo GENRE: Drama RELEASE: 19 Mar
power station, generating electricity for the Telok Blangah district until the 1970s. St James Power Station is the epitome of a colonial industrial building, with its signature triple-level arched windows, red brick exterior, balconies and immaculate craftsmanship. Look a little closer for these details the next time you hit St James for a fun night!
6. Esplanade Park Memorials Gazetted in: December 2010
The clock tower in what is now Hwa Chong Institution has remarkable significance in Singapore’s history. Founded in 1919, it was used as an observation post during World War II by the British forces during their defence of Singapore. The building is decked out in neo-classical architecture, and the two-storey tower annex provides a sweeping vantage point of the Bukit Timah area.
And you thought this was just another mall where the cool kids hang out. The hipsters have good taste – the Cathay is in fact Singapore’s very first skyscraper, and at that time the tallest building in Southeast Asia. It was also the first public building in Singapore to be air-conditioned. The 17-storey building housed the flagship 1,300-seat Cathay cinema, inaugurated by Loke Wan Tho with the screening of A Korda’s The Four Feathers (1939). At the start of the Japanese invasion, the British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation transmitted updates on the progress of the war from the Cathay.
2. Lau Pa Sat (formerly Telok Ayer Market) Gazetted in: June 1973
Ying Fo Fui Kun is a clan association founded in 1822 by Hakka immigrants from Guangdong, China. You may recognise its clan house by its traditional oriental entrance that sticks out conspicuously among the shophouses of Telok Ayer Street. The clan has served the Hakka community since 1822, and continues to promote Hakka heritage and identity through scholarships, language classes and festivals.
5. St James Power Station Gazetted in: November 2009
The watering hole of the commercial district, Lau Pa Sat is Singapore’s oldest market. It was originally located on the bank of the Singapore River but was relocated to Telok Ayer, where it has remained since 1824. The ornamental columns at the entrance were built with the aim to make Lau Pa Sat a landmark. The market passed through the hands of multiple Caucasian commissions, forming its iconic ornate design.
Tan Kim Seng Fountain
Lim Bo Seng Memorial
The Esplanade Park on Connaught Drive is home to three notable monuments – can you find them all? The Tan Kim Seng fountain, named after the pioneering merchant and philanthropist, is a fine 19th-Century cast-iron fountain, featuring four Muses in the lower bowl: Calliope holding a book or writing tablet; Clio holding a scroll; Erato holding a lyre and Melpomene holding a garland. It’s a work of art you’d expect to find in a manicured French garden. Meanwhile, the Cenotaph is Singapore’s first military commemorative structure that honours individuals who perished in World Wars I and II. The memorial bears bronze plaques with the inscription, “To Our Glorious Dead”. Crowning the Cenotaph is a bronze medallion symbolising the colony of Singapore. Finally, the Lim Bo Seng memorial, named in honour of the heroic member of the resistance and prisoner of war during the Japanese Occupation, is a significant piece of Chinese national architecture. It features four bronze plaques with text in English, Chinese, Tamil and Jawi, illustrating Lim Bo Seng’s life. Who knew that our little crowded city concealed so many important monuments entrenched in rich history? We should keep our eyes open for these wonders of our nation!

Scottish Brown Crab Wok Fried in White Pepper
Left to Right: Takesumi Chilli Crab Bun; Truffle Wild Mushroom Dumpling; Beancurd Skin with Prawn
When it comes to restaurants serving Chilli Crab and good Chinese seafood, the usual suspects come to mind – but there are a number of underrated ones and Red House is one Red House Seafood Restaurant is no stranger to Singaporeans. Since its beginnings in 1976 on Upper East Coast Road, this family-run business has been serving some of Singapore’s favourite Chinese and local seafood dishes. Even though Red House Seafood Restaurant is no longer at East Coast, its two other locations at Prinsep Street and Robertson Quay are definitely more central and easily accessible. Yay, for us! I’ve had many chilli crabs and seafood throughout my lifetime including from Jumbo, Long Beach, Roland’s, Crystal Jade and Ubin Seafood Restaurant. Many of them are very good. And there lies the problem – they have become “expected”.
Added Attention Brings Better Taste Like the rest of its peers, Red House is equally good. But some of its dishes have been given an added touch of attention, which brings small unexpected pleasant surprises to the palate. Its dim sum dishes are superbly done. Even though the selection of dim sum may not be as large as that of Tim Ho Wan’s or other restaurants, it makes the Singaporean foodie in me very proud to say that Red House’s dim sum tastes slightly better than the Michelinacclaimed Hong Kong brand! And, Red House’s prices are slightly cheaper. For these reasons, you should definitely visit Red House. I visited Red House four times, and ordered very similar things. My only wish is that the dishes be a little more consistent. Famed Michelin-starred restaurants such as Tim Ho Wan and Din Tai Fung have amazingly perfected the art of consistency.
I’ve had many chilli crabs and seafood throughout my lifetime: Jumbo, Long Beach, Roland’s, Crystal Jade and Ubin Seafood Restaurant. Many of them are very good. And there lies the problem – they have become ‘expected’. For Red House, the custard in its custard buns is sometimes too runny and sometimes too firm. This is nothing major but just makes it a bit looser in style or consistency than its more popular peers. Here are seven dishes I highly recommend.
1
Truffle Wild Mushroom Dumpling ($4 / 3pc)
Glistening green skin makes this dim sum dish a visual delight. But the real surprise is in the truffle wild mushrooms inside. Very delicate and nicely balanced.
2
Beancurd Skin with Prawn ( $5 / 3pc)
This is another fairly common dim sum dish but Red House’s version is very well crafted. In many other places, the beancurd skin is rather soggy. The Red House version has very crispy and brittle skin while the inside is soft, steamy and juicy. Its prawn is also larger than most. They ‘snap’ upon biting, like how a very fresh prawn should.
3
Takesumi Chilli Crab Bun ($8 / 3pc)
The latest addition to their menu, Takesumi, or “bamboo charcoal” in Japanese, is mixed into the dough of the bun to produce this obsidian-
like veneer on the bun. You can order steamed or deep-fried versions. It’s a fantastic concept combining a bun with chilli crab. With each bite, the chilli crab filling within oozes out. The only problem is that the filling is a touch too thick compared to the gravy consistency of a chilli crab dish. This is due to the bun absorbing the thinner juices of the filling during the cooking process. Nonetheless, it’s a very delightful dish you should try.
4
Scottish Brown Crab Wok Fried & Tossed in White Pepper ($65 / kg) A shortage of Sri Lankan Crabs has caused the owners of Red House to venture into other varieties. Chancing upon this less-colourful Scottish Brown Crab while on holiday, the owners decided to import them for use in local dishes. Unlike the Sri Lankan Crab, where a ball of soft, cottony crab meat pops out at the joint, these Scottish crustaceans are firmer, tougher and delightful-tasting as well.
5
Spicy Seafood Combination ($28, small)
On the surface, it appears to be your ordinary seafood mash-up with the traditional chilli crab sauce but, upon tasting, there is an unexpected lemongrass flavour that gives a surprising zing of flavour. It is well-balanced, exceptionally flavourful and instantly likeable. It goes well either with white rice or the deep fried mantou.
6
Fresh Crabmeat “Pao Fan” ($28 for 2-3 pax)
Most Singaporeans are familiar with congee, the thick mushy-textured cracked-rice derived from hours of cooking, commonly associated with the Cantonese, as well as the porridge, which is less viscous and associated with the Teochews. In both styles, the rice is cooked together with the water. Pao Fan, or “soaked with rice”, another Chinese favourite but less common here, is the addition of pre-cooked rice to a soup. The rice grains retain much of their shape and texture, albeit swollen from the soaking, and impart additional texture and subtle rice sweetness to the soup. The seafood broth is noticeably strong and flavourful, although it did vary more than I liked on the two occasions I tried it. Lastly, for $28, I wished there was a bit more crab meat. Overall, though, this is a great “off-the-beatenpath” dish.
7
Chilled Lime Sherbet with Lemongrass Jelly ($6.80 / person)
Usually, I don’t mention dessert but this one is worth a note, and a try. An unusual combination of lime sherbet and lemongrass jelly makes this dessert delightfully refreshing and interesting. By Frank Young

Kuvo: Discrete Dining along Orchard Road
Ambrosia Serves… Well… Ambrosia The lion’s share of Kuvo’s space belongs to Ambrosia. With its a la carte dining and afternoon tea buffet, Ambrosia serves a combination of international and local cuisines. The menu highlights include Atlantic Cod prepared a-la-Meuniere (meaning to preflour before sautéing) with sweet pea crust, half-pound chargrilled Wagyu burger and Slipper Lobster Laksa Lemak. Of the three, I had the chance to try the Atlantic cod medallion and Wagyu burger. The cod’s presentation was exceptionally beautiful with its creamy white flesh coated with green sweet peas. It was wonderfully firm, moist and flaky to the touch. For the Wagyu burger, I had it topped with Portobello and cheese. Everything was delightfully-balanced and the beef was so tasty that I didn’t even need ketchup. Both dishes cost in the high $30 range, so I wouldn’t expect anything but the best in taste. Fortunately, it delivers.
Whether you’re looking for fine wine, bespoke cocktails or fine dining, Kuvo brings a multi-food and beverage concept to life Tucked in the second floor of Orchard Shopping Centre is Kuvo, the latest dining and wining concept by Sarika Connoisseurs Café, the same company that operates The Connoisseur Concerto (TCC) in Singapore. Unlike TCC, Kuvo is a step up from the mass market coffee culture and caters to a more discerning and sophisticated crowd. The entrance is discreet and, at the same time, grand. A Private escalator, clad in gold and dark timbres, ushers patrons to the second floor where four distinct food and beverage concepts await.
Afternoon Delight On another visit to Kuvo with my in-laws, we tried the Afternoon Tea Buffet. For $35 per person, there was a spread of local favourites including Ayam Buah Keluak, fine cheeses, Prosciutto ham, scones, pastries and desserts. The highlight of their meal, included in the price, was Kuvo’s three-tier tray of goodies with nine specially-prepared items from the kitchen. The titbits included finger sandwiches, mozzarella with tomato on toast, fried scallops and yam, and my favourite, Otah chawanmushi cooked sous vide in bail jars (glass jars with thick rubber seals and a wire-locking mechanism). My in-laws were impressed with the food and thought the afternoon tea session was “great value for money”. In fact, one of them thought Kuvo is a good place to entertain friends for birthdays or special occasions. Indeed. I have returned to Kuvo on a few dining occasions already!
Multi-Spatial Experience The name Kuvo is derived from “cuvee”, or French for “blend”. And a blend is exactly what this multi-concept space has. The 9,000 sq ft of space houses four unique areas – the gift shop, the Elixir Bar, the Vine Lounge and Ambrosia. There are slight differences in the design of one area to the next but overall the ambience is modern, elegant and sophisticated. The plushly-decorated Vine Lounge, with large club chairs, offers over 140 labels of fine wines to choose from. If wine is your preference, let Chief Sommelier Gabriele Rizzardi give you some highlights in his selection. (Wine starts at $14.50 per glass.) For those who prefer cocktails instead, let the head mixologist of Elixir Bar, Yutaka Nakashima, create bespoke cocktails for you. (Cocktails start at $21 per glass.)

An Open Door to reinvent brunch Cosy hangout Open Door Policy in Tiong Bahru launches a new menu that reinvents brunch, paired with refreshing new tipples from the Tippling Club’s Head Bartender Open Door Policy in Tiong Bahru’s Head Chef Daniele Sperindio has launched a brand new brunch menu, reinventing certain brunch norms or familiar dishes in the process. The cosy bistro’s style of fusion European, Western and Asian flavours were strongly evident in the new dishes.
Breaking Norms of Brunch Cuisine “The new brunch offerings stay true to ODP’s spirit of constantly elevating our food to a higher level of fresh tastes,” states Chef Sperindio. He added that this new menu is of “a higher level of complexity compared to our previous café-styled items”. He further aptly says, “With a focus on more premium-quality ingredients, innovative tastes and interesting presentations, the new dishes deliver a welllayered flavour profile to give our diners that element of surprise while still packing that comfort quotient we’re distinctly known for.”
Lively Colours & Intriguing Flavour Combinations Surprise, he did. I was enticed by the Eggs Benedict with Poached Chicken, spinach and diced tomatoes on sourdough bread, with Green Curry Hollandaise Sauce. It had
Right: A few of the diners commented on how crispy the rosti was in the Potato Rosti with Scrambled Eggs, sliced pork sausages and crème fraiche
a luminosity with its shade of green, in an appealing rather than suspect fashion. Apart from its comely appearance, how the flavours of the different components came together was unique. If you love Thai Green Curry, you’ll find this an excellent choice for brunch. The other colourful contender piqued my curiosity but perhaps not so much my taste buds. The very orange-looking [though I’m not sure now after looking at dress colours going around on social media] Roast Wagyu Rump, ratte potatoes, poached eggs, red onions and bright chilli béarnaise sauce on a sweet brioche bun had a rather… uncommon taste. I’m sure I caught a hint of a smile on Chef’s lips as he mentioned that there was some sambal in the feisty-looking sauce (which wasn’t too spicy, if you’re wondering). While I love sambal belacan, I wasn’t used to the (to me) unusual taste of the sauce. Perhaps it was the sambal or chilli as a béarnaise sauce. I am wondering how other
Asian palates would take to this. Perhaps you could tell me once you’ve tried it.
Other New Brunch Options Another one I liked, and had more helpings of, was the Truffle Scrambled Organic Egg with oyster, shimeji and Portobello mushrooms and baby spinach with sourdough bread. If you enjoy truffle fries, this will certainly please you. While satisfying, I wouldn’t say it was extraordinary. What was a little extraordinary was the Potato Rosti with Scrambled Eggs, sliced pork sausages, crème fraiche and red onion brown jus. A few of the diners at my table commented on how crispy and tasty the rosti was. Another thing that stood out was the sausage in The English Breakfast with premium British sausages and smoked pancetta. “Premium” is not overselling. It truly tasted delicious to us. Even the little tomatoes from France have a rich flavour.
Top: The flavours of the Eggs Benedict with Poached Chicken, spinach, diced tomatoes, sourdough & Green Curry Hollandaise Sauce come together in an enticing and satisfying way Bottom: The Buttermilk Pancake with Crème Patisserie comes with homemade citrus-flavoured sour pastry crème, poached strawberries, freeze-dried raspberries and artisanal ice cream made in-house
Together with the Tippling Club’s Head Bartender Kamil Foltan’s new selection of tipples, it certainly constituted a warm, satisfying brunch. Not all the items were exceptional but this was good as far as brunch menus go, with unexpected reinventions to boot. Bleached Living
The homeowners specifically requested for a home office where the husband can catch up on work without getting distracted. To create a conducive space, the designers built study desks and paired them with both open and closed shelves. To make the room family-friendly, the design team also created an additional pullout study table that can be neatly tucked away when not in use.
he family of five that moved into this three-storey house was not too impressed with what the developer had originally given them. Yet, they could see potential in it. In a bid to improve their home, they engaged design firm The Orange Cube to polish up the existing design. The design brief was straightforward: keep the interiors simple, clean and linear. The designers complied and even introduced new textures and design elements to create the ideal family home.
The living room carries the polished and pristine look that the homeowners requested. The main draw in this room, other than the luxurious expanse of space, is the massive feature wall that anchors the space. The Orange Cube team layered the wall with concentric rectangles to add visual texture and depth to the design. Each layer of this feature wall is either covered in a laminate that resembles raw cement or spray painted with a high-gloss finish.
Clearing Things Up The designers chose a dark coffee shade on the wall, immediately bringing a sense of calm and tranquility to the room
Over in the dining room, the designers wanted to maintain the sense of spaciousness. The dining table, which can seat up to ten people, is the focal point here. To complement the dining table set, the designers built a mirrored wall that adds to the illusion of space.
Serving Space The sleek and streamlined kitchen is exactly what the homeowners needed. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets stretch across the room, providing plenty of storage space for the family. The fronts of the cabinets were purposely left bare for a flushed and seamless appeal. The designers also built a little breakfast nook in the middle of the kitchen. Not only is this perfect for quick meals in the kitchen, it also doubles as an additional worktop for food preparation.
For Your Entertainment One of the rooms has been converted into an entertainment room with a state-of-the-art sound system – great for karaoke sessions
with friends and family. The design team even custom-built a settee specially for this room in case guests stay over.
Colour of Coffee The designers wanted the bedroom to follow the aesthetic of the home but, at the same time, they wanted to balance the white palette with a more relaxing colour. They chose a dark coffee shade on the wall, immediately bringing a sense of calm and tranquility to the room. The headboard is made from PU leather that simply adds another level of luxe to this space at an affordable cost. Kuala Lumpur – City Living Opportunities Most homes in the Klang Valley area cost an average of more than RM600,000, with properties in prime areas starting from RM2,000 per sq ft onwards. Last year, Kuala Lumpur’s prime areas witnessed a flurry of high-end condominium launches in Bukit Bintang and KLCC, such as Harrod’s and Banyan Tree, averaging at RM3,000 per sq ft. These projects have proven to be popular with foreign investors due to their prime location in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. For those thinking of investing in the Klang Valley area, it is best to get a small unit like a studio as it can be easily rented out or sold to
either locals or foreigners as its quantum price will be within the range for both locals and foreigners.
Iskandar Malaysia – Modern Development Across the Causeway In Iskandar Malaysia, the modern development in Johor, foreigners will still look to Medini and Nusajaya as the former is exempted from the minimum purchase price and Real Property Gains Tax (RPGT) while the latter has better infrastructure and is well-planned. JB Sentral is also expected to be popular as it will serve as a gateway to Singapore once the cross-border rail service connecting Johor Bahru’s Rapid Transit System (RTS) connects to Singapore’s MRT by 2018 to 2019. In addition, the opening of Sungei Segget by end 2015 and various Johor Bahru rejuvenation projects will result in a positive impact on property prices in JB Sentral. This together with the newly-refurbished Menara Komtar JBCC and Angry Birds Theme Park will further add vibrancy to the area, especially the tourism and retail sectors. Dip in the Pink Lake Look at how beautiful our planet is – here are prime spots for the best photos on Earth! If Barbie could have her own lake, this would be it. Pink Lake is a salt lake near the town of Esperance in Western Australia. It blushes a bright shade of bubblegum pink in the summer. It’s speculated that the lake changes colour because of algae, bacteria and / or brine prawn build-up. Combined with optimum temperature and light, these elements react to produce what we see: a lake in the pink of health! Esperance is an eight-hour drive or two-hour flight from Perth.
