Are you ready for football’s version of Facebook in an app? This is certainly the vision of the founders of PlayPal, a new innovative mobile application designed to help people to find football kakis in Singapore. The PlayPal app matches players to suitable teams according to specified preferences such as location, playing position and age.

MORE THAN TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING PlayPal was officially launched at the Zion Sports Complex in March, after nearly eight months of research and beta testing. However, the idea had been in the works for more than a decade. Founders Shaun Lin, Vincent Tee and Patrick Low, 31, grew to become the best of friends when they were students at River Valley Secondary School. Almost instantly, they bonded over their passion for the sport of football and their frustration at the unavailability of football as a CCA (Co-Curricular Activity) in school. “We had no football team in secondary school. In a way, we were deprived of the game,” recalled Lin, CEO, who was a former property agent before he quit to run PlayPal full time. “So the idea arose from our own problems of not being able to play football or finding a team on the weekends. We wanted to help strangers connect and possibly foster a new friendship through football,” he said.

A MORE SOCIABLE & EFFECTIVE GAME Although there are amateur teams and leagues in Singapore with impressive structures, there is a gap in the market for amateur or young footballers who want to test the waters out without the pressure of performing. PlayPal seems to offer just that – with a sleek interface and design, and easy navigation, the app seems to be designed to allow social footballers to enjoy their game and the fun banter that comes with their new teams. The app also boasts a player rating system, team rankings and a newsroom system, where players get to catch up with their pals’ activities online. Available on both Apple and Android devices, PlayPal has already seen more than 1,000 downloads.

SUPPORT from FAS The PlayPal app has also received tremendous support from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS); with President Zainudin Nordin saying that it would help young people to start playing sports in Singapore. “There has been great response on the app from users, and we see it gaining traction. More importantly, we’re getting proactive feedback from the people playing, which is very important,” said Tee, Chief Technical

Officer of PlayPal, who has an extensive background in developing game software. Besides their passion for mobile technology, all three of PlayPal’s founders felt that they wanted to give back to the local sports community, especially in light of the focus on the development of youth talent here. “We watched the S-League when it first started, followed Gombak United’s games closely, and we are very passionate about helping the state of the sport here,” said Lin.

CASTING THE NET WIDER Interestingly, all three are massive fans of different clubs in the Barclays Premier League, with Lin being a die-hard Chelsea fan, Tee a Middlesbrough fan (he admits it’s rare) and Low a United fan. “Everyone especially the youths are [sic] constantly on their mobiles these days. If they’re not on the (PlayPal) app, how often are they playing? Young players need more options, which we feel are not readily available, and we created this app with them in mind,” said Tee. Lin added that PlayPal has received support from local football icons such as Fandi Ahmad and Isa Halim, and that it’s important to re-examine the youth structure in Singapore. “The net is not wide enough and in many ways, the talented youths slip through the system. If they keep playing, there’s a chance they can be discovered and they will feel motivated to develop themselves,” said Lin. While the app is still in its infancy, there are big plans to develop it into a social network for football fans in Singapore. “We hope to make it a Facebook for football. It’s ambitious, we know, but we hope to receive seed funding to propel it to the next stages, and take it out of Singapore and (to) the rest of Asia,” said Tee. A PlayPal tournament between schools is also in discussion.

OTHER FOOTBALL APPS There are similar apps linking social footballers to bigger communities. JogaBo allows players to “check in” to games with friends, share activities and record their playing history. It also allows them to analyse their stats from each match. “An app that is able to leverage football communities can be very powerful but is it enough to introduce people to new players? The makers can consider partnering up with local pitches and integrate an easy payment system as well,” said Ali Darwish, a mobile expert and business development manager in Singapore, who had worked for a venture capitalist firm in the Middle East. With the abundance of media-savvy social footballers today, the possibilities seem endless. By Ash Hashim

PlayPal Football can be downloaded from Play Store on Android and App Store on iPhone.

Aston Villa

Sunderland

Aston Villa has two very winnable home games against West Ham and Burnley, with a trip to Southampton on May 16. The final game of the season may see Tim Sherwood’s men thinking more about the FA Cup final against Arsenal at the end of the month but I think they should have enough to claim all three points against Burnley. Final points tally: 41

Sunderland has a game in hand on all its relegation rivals but its run-in looks daunting. Everton away this weekend will be too tough for the Black Cats while Leicester will continue its good form when it visits. The away trips to Arsenal and Chelsea will, of course, be of not much use to Dick Advocaat’s side. Final Points tally: 33

Newcastle United

QPR takes on Manchester City at the Etihad stadium this weekend and will struggle to take anything from the match. I believe QPR will beat Newcastle, while an away trip to in-form Leicester will garner nothing. Final points tally: 30

Newcastle is struggling at the moment, having suffered eight losses on the spin. The Magpies’ performance against Leicester last weekend was nothing short of dire and the players look to have given up playing for stand-in manager John Carver. Having two homes games left is of some comfort, especially as they are against teams with little to play for in West Brom and West Ham. Still, I expect them to struggle against QPR. Final points tally: 37

Hull City Hull can forget about getting anything from its last two games of the season, away to Tottenham and at home to Manchester United. This means only a home game against Burnley is where the Tigers can pick up maximum points. Final points tally: 37

Queens Park Rangers

Burnley Burnley will find Hull away too tough for them this weekend but will take some joy from the visit of Stoke the week after. The Clarets could take advantage of Aston Villa on the final day, although Benteke is on fire and will want to continue his good form ahead of the FA Cup Final. Final points tally: 29 Red Card Sports Radio – 24/7 sports news and live football commentaries. Sports fans know more. Tune in on StarHub Ch 225.

Leicester City Leicester now has five wins in six games and I see no reason why it can’t be eight wins from nine games until season’s end. There’s a home game against a Southampton side that may have given up the chase for a European spot, followed by an away game against Sunderland and a home encounter against QPR. The final two games are real relegation dogfights but I expect Nigel Pearson’s men to continue with their momentum. Final points tally: 44

It looks as though Dick Advocaat’s recent appointment as Sunderland manager is too little too late to save the club from relegation doom

Demi Lovato: Pop star with a heart of gold

Known as a philanthropist, Demi is also loved for being outspoken about social issues such as anti-bullying

Pop superstar Demi Lovato has some pretty exciting plans in store for her fans – Weekender tells you more from our exclusive interview! She might have given her heart a break but the daring Demi Lovato isn’t slowing down any time soon. A platinum-selling record artiste at just 22 years old, this former Disney starlet shot to fame with her catchy charttoppers such as “Skyscraper”, “Heart Attack” and “Give Your Heart a Break”. Demi’s latest single, “Nightingale”, was a special Christmas gift to her adoring fans. Last week, thousands of lucky fans in Singapore enjoyed a night of powerful performance. Amidst her busyness, I managed to get an exclusive interview with the pop superstar to spill the juicy details on her upcoming projects – and even recent developments in the love department!

mov i e ne ws

Star Wars celebrations & several revelations

What have you been busy with apart from your concerts? With the exception of my World Tour and skincare line, “DEVONNE by Demi”, most of my time has been devoted to the studio as I’m working on my fifth album.

Have you had time to pick up new hobby or interest recently? Getting fit is my new hobby and I love it.

You work in a high-stress industry. How do you unwind and relax? Demi Lovato has won over many hearts with powerful songs such as “Skyscraper” and her version of “Let It Go”

I like to unwind by working out since I know that it is important to my body and my mind. I also make sure to spend time with my family & friends.

If you had a time machine, when and where would you go to? I would go back in time to watch Jesus in action!

Do you remember what you were doing when you received the news of your first chart-topper? I was actually at home in LA. It was probably one of the most exciting things I’ve ever heard, and of course I was so grateful!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

The 501st Legion and others dressed up in Star Wars costumes for the simulcast at Lido, including a very attractive Princess Leia

New revelations were unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, USA and fans at the live simulcast in Singapore were among the first to know Recently, an exclusive group of Star Wars fans in Singapore were fortunate to be able to watch a live streaming simulcast of the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, USA and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel hosted by director JJ Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. At Shaw Lido IMAX cinema, these fans joined those in Anaheim to be the first in the world to catch the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, as well as new secrets revealed. Weekender was among the few privileged guests. Registration for the simulcast event opened on Apr 8 at 12.17pm online and tickets were snapped up within 20 minutes!

The most challenging part is always being in the spotlight, even when you don’t want to be.

We know you’re dating now – what kind of qualities do you look for in a partner? Having someone who supports and loves you for who you are is what is most important.

You’re known as a philanthropist. Do you think society has improved over the years? I do think that society has improved over the years and the more we support and encourage each other, the better it will continue to get. There is nothing more rewarding than helping others, and I’m grateful that I am able to do so.

Do you feel like your musical style has evolved over the years? As an artist, I’ve never been as confident as I am now. Over the years I’ve grown so much personally and professionally which has definitely been reflected in my music.

Which direction is your music heading in? I can’t describe my new sound, but it’s very authentic to who I am and my voice. Right now, I’m playing around with different sounds and creating something I’m proud of.

We heard that you’ll be working on the soundtrack to a new movie. Could you give your fans a little teaser?

There is nothing more rewarding than helping others, and I’m grateful that I am able to do so.

I can’t say too much but I can tell you that very exciting things are happening! I’ll be the lead role in the animated film called Charming. By Pamela Chow Demi Lovato recently wrapped up her Singapore and Malaysia stops on her World Tour 2015. See page 12 for our review of Demi’s concert.

The new stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the event, John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron)

New Stars & Details Unveiled The audience cheered when three of the new stars came on stage. If you find that Daisy Ridley bears a resemblance to Keira Knightley, you aren’t the only one. Ridley plays Rey, who lives on the dessert planet seen from the first trailer. One of the big revelations was that the dessert planet is not Tattooine (with the twin moons, and seen in the original trilogy) as most had thought. This is a new planet, Jakku. It didn’t stop there. In the first trailer, John Boyega (who acted in “24: Live Another Day”) is the first to pop up, literally. His panting face is visible while being in stormtrooper uniform. When asked if his character, Finn, really is a stormtrooper, he shot Abrams a dramatic side glance, to see if he had permission to speak. Boyega said that he is a stormtrooper but both said that we would have to watch the film to understand the character and see what situations he gets into. Boyega executed an amusing mimicry of Harrison Ford, of when he asked the veteran actor for an autograph in between filming. Putting on a perfect imitation of his voice, with a slight growl, he intoned, “This is weirrrd… but I’ll do it...” Oscar Isaac also commented on his character, Poe Dameron, that he is “Only the best damn pilot in the galaxy!” Hmm… Han and Luke would have words with Poe, if they were a few decades younger. What topped it all was a fully-functional BB-8 droid that rolled onto stage, spun around and beeped its own adorable language! Yup, it’s no CGI! Veteran and Favourites Fans were stoked to see the original cast. Peter Mayhew (also known as Chewbacca), who carried a walking stick that looked like a green lightsaber, led the pack followed by Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and even a fully-mobile R2-D2 (something that did not previously exist)! What topped it all was a fully-functional BB-8 droid that rolled onto stage, spun around and beeped its own adorable language! Yup, it’s no CGI!

Adrian Pang: From Hollywood to home Amidst his preparations for a packed line-up of productions, Adrian Pang took some time out to share with Weekender about life as one of Singapore’s leading actors and comedians He may be the face of some of your favourite funny characters but talented thespian Adrian Pang takes life very seriously. When he’s not busy rehearsing, he’s rushing about planning new pantomimes and acting with big screen A-listers. In a surprise Hollywood appearance that shook up the heartlands, Adrian acted in a cameo role in cybercrime movie Blackhat, alongside Chris Hemsworth (Thor in Avengers) and pop star Wang Lee Hom. More recently, Adrian appears in the controversial Ken Kwek film Unlucky Plaza as bigoted motivational speaker Terence Chia, who gets taken hostage by a distraught expatriate. I sat down for a chat with Adrian, who spilled the beans on his exciting life behind the scenes.

You often play caricatures of unlikeable or unpopular characters. How do you get inspired for these roles?

Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) with a lightsaber walking stick, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), JJ Abrams and a fully-mobile R2-D2!

Just by observing people around me. [laughs] There are a lot of people I don’t like, so it’s great to be inspired by all these people around me! It’s [also] important to find out why this character behaves this way, and what in his past led him to become the person that he is. We’re all at least 50 shades of something.

Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One Trailer! On Apr 19, in Anaheim, more was revealed, this time for Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. A very early teaser trailer was shown for the film that opens only in December 2016. Rogue One takes place in between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, and has been officially described as: “A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans…” The narrator’s voice, sounding uncannily like the late Sir Alec Guinness (Obiwan Kenobi), says, “For more than a thousand generations… the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire.” The camera then tracks to show a spectral Death Star in the distance. The teaser is so far not unavailable on any official site but can be found (in poor quality) on YouTube or social media accounts.

May the Fourth Be With You With May the 4th (a pun on “May the Force”) being Star Wars Day, there was also a “Celebrate the Force” event at Suntec City Mall last weekend. There were Star Wars goodie bags, appearances by the 501st Legion in costumes, X-Wing game demos, various exhibitions, merchandise and collectibles, and a FightSaber (a lightsaber fight choreography team) performance and workshop for kids. How did you end up acting in Blackhat beside Chris Hemsworth?

Our writer with Adrian Pang

[Laughs] I got a call asking if I would look at the script and record myself, so I just did it. A couple of weeks later I was told that I was going to be flying off to Hong Kong to do this thing.

What have you been busy with recently?

That was cool. How was this Hollywood experience, seeing it wasn’t your first?

Photo: Flora Yeo

I just finished doing a play at the Esplanade, The Weight of Silk on Skin, and I’m starting rehearsals for my theatre company’s next play, called Tribes, on from May 22 to Jun 7. There’s a lot [of work]!

Were there any unlucky incidents during the filming of Unlucky Plaza? We were filming in a lovely house on top of a hill that was just five minutes from mine, so I used to cycle to set every day. One evening, I went a little bit out of control and I smashed into a hedge, scratched my leg and tore my trousers quite badly. But luckily my hair was okay. [laughs] They gave me a really nice haircut – I really, really like it – but I can’t replicate it on my own.

What made you decide to accept this role? That Ken Kwek fellow la! I’ve known Ken for a few years, and we share the same slightly screwed-up sense of humour – we see the world in a similar warped way. I read [the script] and thought it was a lot of fun.

Do you sympathise with your arrogant character in the film? What I can sympathise with is his one redeeming feature – he loves his wife. In every other sense he just seems to be an ”a-hole”. But what surprised me is how devoted to his wife he is. When I read the script, I thought, “Aww.” I’ve been married for 20 years – I would be nothing without my wife, Tracy. She’s just gone away with my two sons for a week, and I feel lost! In a completely unplanned and adorable situation, a young Jedi fan challenged one of the Sith performers

Adrian Pang has starred in Hollywood blockbusters such as Blackhat and Spy Game, as well as local TV shows such as “Parental Guidance” and “Ah Girl”

Michael Mann was interesting. He was a bit of a nutcase – I mean, he’s a wonderful man. When we got on set he would look at my costume and say, “No, it doesn’t look right,” and he sent me back to the costume department. And Colleen Atwood – a multiple Oscar-winning costume designer – had no idea what to do for this man. He was auditioning T-shirts! It took a few days before I was properly doing any work but he was very personable when it came down to it.

which Hollywood actor would you like to star alongside next? That’s really tough. I’ve had so many movie heroes from young. The actor I used to worship as a hero was Robert De Niro. But in later years there’s been other actors whose work I greatly admire: Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis and Matthew McConaughey.

You’ll be starring in the upcoming LKY Musical. How has your preparation for this role changed recently? The script itself is still a work in progress. [But] just as with any other role that I play, it’s important to find the humanity of the role. Everybody’s got their own perception of the man, and I can’t do anything to change those perceptions. All I can do is to do my job and hope for the best. Unlucky Plaza is in theatres now, with a rating of M18 for coarse language.

return of a tortured hero The road warrior Mad Max returns for more explosive action, played this time by Tom Hardy

After 30 years, Mad Max returns for a brand new wild ride through the post-apocalyptic desert world

I

f you’re unfamilliar with the cult classic series of Mad Max movies, now’s a good time to be initiated. Max Rockatansky – better known as Mad Max – is a peacekeeping officer serving the desert highways of a ravaged, dystopian Australia. After losing his wife and child to a criminal gang, he plunges into a rage-filled existence, bringing cold hard justice to every villainous deviant in his path. Mad Max was portrayed by Mel Gibson in the first three films. The last of which, Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome, also starring singer Tina Turner, was released in 1985. Now, 30 years later, Tom Hardy (of Inception and The Dark Knight Rises) stars in the new reboot as the road warrior Mad Max, the post-apocalyptic world’s last hope.

Expect quirky characters with strange names, once again

Rebels on the Run In the barren deserts of Australia, almost everyone has gone mad fighting for survival, and benevolence is dead. Among the survivors stands Max, who is haunted by his traumatic past and now seeks peace of mind. But peace is a faraway fantasy in this world. Captured by the deadly Immortan Joe’s gang, Max is at the end of his rope. That is, until he runs into elite rebel Imperator Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron). Furiosa, a feisty go-getter, has stolen Immortan Joe’s prized resource: five young women kidnapped to mother the next generation. This has enraged the warlord, who launches into a high-octane road war against the rebels. Using Mad Max’s knowledge of the desert, Furiosa and the women must safely cross the scorched land to escape the madness of their captors.

The Legendary Series Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth entry in the wildly successful Mad Max series, directed by George Miller, the mastermind behind the concept and tales of the tortured road warrior. Mel Gibson was the apt face to kick things off with the original Mad Max film in 1979. Following a major energy crisis, Australia is overrun by motorcycle gangs scavenging the lands and terrorising citizens. Max is a police officer fighting to protect the peace Down Under, until a crazed biker gang pursues and kills his wife and child. Max loses it and roams the deserts to hunt down the culprits in a blind rage. You might be wondering how the Mad Max series won

Mad Max must face off with even crazier nemeses, this time Immortan Joe’s (middle) pack of madmen

over so many hearts and became such a post-apocalyptic cult classic. Audiences cheered for the heart-stopping battle and chase scenes that Max brought to the screens; a visual extravagance rivalled only by the edgy costume designs of the punk-styled, leather-clad gang members. It’s fast-paced, tightly-edited and comes with a captivating storyline. No wonder the series of films are among Australia’s most popular exported films.

Rebooted and Ready to Rumble Now, Mad Max returns in a fresh reboot, starring the tough, ripped hunk Tom Hardy as the lone road warrior. Taking on the mantle, Mad Max once again tears through the desert wasteland and mows down any punk who stands in his way. Joining him is Oscar-winner Theron (of Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman); Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Nux; and Hugh Keays-Byrne (of the original Mad Max, having starred as “Toecutter”, and Sleeping Beauty) as Immortan Joe. Mad Max: Fury Road will be presented at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in the Official Selection Out of Competition on Thursday, May 14 at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Evidently, the return of this king is highly anticipated throughout the world – so you definitely have to catch it, even if you’re not already a fan. You will most probably become one after watching this Mad Max reboot!

When I look at Singapore now, I wonder how many people really know what their parents and grandparents went through...

e n t e rta in m en t Featu r e

Global cast enacts Singapore’s struggles & rise to the world stage Singapura: The Musical, featuring a medley of local and international thespians, will take our stories and struggles to the world – the leads speak to Weekender about its global appeal You may know the Singapore story, but did you know about the respect and awe it has commanded on a global scale? The Singapore story has impacted so many around the world that celebrated composer Ed Gatchalian was compelled to pull together an impressive international team to bring it to the world. Singapura: The Musical follows the lives, struggles and hopes of ordinary Singaporean folk through our turbulent years from 1955 to 1965. With an international cast of comprising four nationalities, Singapura is set to be a spectacular experience of song and dance to celebrate our island nation and home.

Just before rehearsals properly started, Weekender sat down for an interview with highly-regarded actor David Bianco, who plays British Lieutenant Flynn and theatre thespian Marian Santiago, who portrays Law student Lee May; and Ed Gatchalian, the prolific composer.

How are you guys feeling about starting rehearsals? Ed: This is our first formal rehearsal with the Singapore cast but we’ve actually been rehearsing for a long time now – however, the process of writing and completing Singapura has taken three years. We’re happy. David: And excited! It’s our first time working with the Singapore cast, and it is the missing piece to this production.

The international performers and production team behind Singapura: The Musical

Marian Santiago as Tan Lee May

David Bianco as Lieutenant Flynn

Ed Gatchalian, Composer

How is it like working with such a diverse range of nationalities?

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about Singapore?

Ed: Because it’s a story set in Singapore, it gets really exciting when we’re with Singaporeans. We were on our 49th draft and – with the inclusion of Singaporean expressions and traditions – the whole piece just became alive and so exciting. Seeing how the international cast and crew react to the Singapore story, it is revitalising in the best way as it reaffirms how universal the story of human struggle and survival really is. Recreating and remembering the past does create an ultimate awareness of what has truly been achieved and what a marvel Singapore is. My hope is that all Singaporeans will want to attend the show and experience this period in Singapore’s history that is brimming with the true culture and essence of the Singapore character.

David: I love durian! We paid $150 for two durians, and we loved it. One had a bitter aftertaste. They’d already cut it and laid it out before telling me the price. But you don’t argue with a guy with a chopper!

What’s the one message from this musical production that can be applied universally? David: The story of love is universal. We can all relate to some type of love, whether it’s with a parent or a significant other. Marian: For Lee May, her dream is like oxygen. She needs to breathe it and grow; she needs it to live, like everyone does. Ed: When I look at Singapore now, I wonder how many people really know what their parents and grandparents went through. They should stop to think of how their parents and grandparents sacrificed so they can have what they do today. It’s a story of inspiration to the world.

Marian: I appreciated eating roasted lamb and barbecue skewers at Geylang. We also love the transportation here. It’s a very efficient country.

What’s your favourite scene in the musical? David: When I really get to know Lee May and I ask all the difficult questions. That scene escalates quite quickly. It starts in one innocent place, and goes to a very traumatic place. That whole scenario is a very beautiful experience for me. Marian: Those with Lee May’s family. We’re solid, we have so much in common but we also have to resolve the same problems from different points of view. I also liked how she has a controversial relationship with this British guy [Flynn]. Ed: The formidable bus riot scenes and the all-enveloping calm of the man in white and his steely resolve in leading and uniting his countrymen through this turbulent and uncertain time in Singapore’s history. concert review

Knocked hard but all heart Demi sang her first five songs, without taking a break, all the while commanding the attention of the crowd with the sheer strength of her vocals.

Demi lit up the stage in what was undeniably a spectacular show

Demi Lovato fans, or Lovatics, turned up in a 3,000-strong crowd as the superstar burned up the stage and lit up the show like a “Neon Light” In Demi Lovato’s first-ever world tour and only her second time in Singapore, her fans – the Lovatics – were captivated by her powerful vocals. At the Suntec Convention Centre, Demi speedily hyped up the audience and started the show on a high note.

Winning Hearts Starting the show with a bang, Demi sang her first five songs, without taking a break, all the while commanding the attention of the crowd with the sheer strength of her vocals. My heart was beating so fast I felt I nearly got a “Heart Attack”. Though I certainly like her music I wasn’t a huge fan of Demi before I went for her concert but I’d definitely catch her again the next time she’s back. It was such a great experience for me that “even if the stars and moon collide”, I promise I wouldn’t miss it.

connecting with her Fans Demi sure has come a long way from her early days in the movie Camp Rock, the debut of her singing career, and through all her personal struggles. The loyal fans who had followed the singer since that time went berserk as she sang “Get Back”, a hit from her debut album Don’t Forget. The crowd ‘aww-ed’ when Demi invited two young fans, best friends Karis Koh and Celeste Lin, on stage with her to sing “Let it Go”, the all-too famous hit from Disney’s Frozen. Nonetheless, other fans sighed in envy that it wasn’t them on stage. Elsa may have been Queen of Arendelle but Demi was queen of hearts that night, connecting well with both the young and the older fans. In fact, audience members of all ages could be seen moving to the beat and waving their light sticks in unison.

An Inspiration and a Role Model Throughout her eventful and emotive concert, Demi shared snippets of her conversations with her fans before the show and talked about her music and what inspired her. Demi talked to her audience at every opportunity that she got, much to their delight. I thought I saw hearts melting in the crowd. Before singing the song “Nightingale”, Demi urged her fans to show compassion and support for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal, saying that we should all be grateful for the lives that we lead. Moreover, as Demi sang “Warrior”, videos in the background showed clips from her visit to Kenya for the Free the Children charity programme, where she had also spent her 21st birthday. This singer-warrior is a role model, without doubt. I’m sure many of her fans have been moved to action and inspired by Demi’s philanthropy.

From Top: Demi showed off her legs and moves; Frozen with glee: Best friends Karis Koh and Celeste Lin were invited on stage with Demi to sing “Let it Go”; Fans came from all around the world to catch Demi

Minced and fried garlic cloves are sprinkled over the dish. It is then topped with chunks of roasted sweet potato and fried toppoki (Korean rice cakes. Spicy Chicken – A must-try for chilli lovers, the Spicy Chicken ($28.90) is coated with a sticky sweet and spicy chilli sauce. The sweet potato cubes and toppoki sure pack a punch!

Spring Onions and Red Chilli, cut finely

Dan Dan is a noodle dish originating from the Chinese Sichuan cuisine and consists of a spicy sauce containing preserved vegetable, chilli oil, Sichuan pepper, minced meat (pork, usually) and scallions, served with noodles. How a typically Chinese dish found its way into Tburu’s menu is a tribute to Calvin’s loyal guests. Calvin’s former restaurant One On The Bund at Clifford Pier was rather famous for this dish and regulars lamented the loss of this dish when the restaurant had to close down. Calvin has brought it back, into the menu at Tburu, albeit with a Japanese twist. Dan Dan Somen is served with a typical Sichuan soup base but with Japanese Somen noodles.

Sleek Eye Candy On the inside, both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have the same internal infrastructure. The distinctive difference is clearly reflected in the S6 Edge’s dual curved screen. Both models come with a large 5.1” Super AMOLED screen, which translates to a more vivid and vibrant display. Weighing at just 138g (S6) and 132g (S6 Edge) they do not feel too heavy or plastic and will fit comfortably even if you have smaller hands. The S6 and S6 Edge will first be available in three standard colours: Black Sapphire, White Pearl and Gold Platinum. The fourth colour is model-specific – the S6 will also come in Blue Topaz and the S6 Edge also in Green Emerald – and will be launched at a later date, undisclosed as yet. With such eye-catching colours and designs to match any lifestyle, the S6 and S6 Edge are all set to be the next musthave gadget.

Two Highly-Effective Cameras Samsung recognises that we rely on our smartphones’ cameras more than ever before, and has equipped the new S6 and S6 Edge with not one but two amazing cameras. Both models are fitted with a 16MP rear camera that comes with an LED flash and a 5MP front camera. With f1.9 aperture lens on both cameras, coupled with Smart Optical Image Stabilisation and IR Detect White Balance, expect superior quality images taken all the time and at any time, even in dim light. Taking images at night or in a club will now no longer pose a problem! To prove how awesome the camera really is, Samsung conducted an image test between the S6 and iPhone 6. Images and videos taken by the iPhone 6 failed terribly when compared side by side to those captured by the S6; it was really a huge difference in both colour intensity and clarity. Samsung has also incorporated another nifty feature in the S6 and S6 Edge, named the Quick Launch Camera function. This gives the user direct access to the camera regardless of any screen he or she is on in less than a second, by simply doubletapping the Home button.

stealing the headlines The Samsung S6 and S6 Edge are both packed with state of the art technology making them not only gorgeous on the outside but also on the inside

Cutting-Edge Specs If you prefer inner beauty over outer beauty, the S6 and S6 Edge have definitely got that covered. Cutting-edge specifications for the S6 and S6 Edge include 4G LTE, 3GB RAM, internal memory 32/64/128GB, Octa-core processor, Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster and UHD video recording capabilities. Do you really need any more reason?

Cool Additional Features A really cool feature of the S6 and S6 Edge is that they have in-built wireless charging capability that works with most wireless charging pads that are currently in the market. No more searching for cables and replacing worn out ones when all you need to do now is to place the smartphone over the charging pad. Did I mention that the battery now charges 1.5 times faster than the S5 and a quick 10-minute charge can provide up to four hours of usage? More juice, less time wasting! The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are now available, with prices starting from $998 and $1,168 respectively.

his 4-bedroom penthouse condominium raises the luxe level without compromising the needs of everyday living. In order to give the family the lavish comfort they’re accustomed to and yet retain the ease of day-to-day home maintenance, the team from Pavillion Creation kept the design elements subtle and discreet.

Communal Hall The living room, dining room and kitchen all sit on the same plane, creating a cohesive shared space that serves the family well. The design team from Pavillion Creation was careful to ensure that each space has enough room to breathe and does not encroach into one another’s zones. The open-concept dry kitchen in particular doubles as an extensive bar counter that comes in handy when the owners are entertaining guests.

Rough Touch In a home as sleek and polished as this apartment, it’s a good idea to include some textures that break the monotony of glossy surfaces. In the hallway that leads to the entrance of the apartment, the Pavillion Creation team created a rough-hewn craftstone wall as a surprising contrast to the sleek interiors of the rest of the home.

Fit For A King

In this guest bedroom, the designers achieved a softer look with sheer curtains and warm lights. The bed has hidden storage that helps to save precious floor space. Completing the look of the room is a feature wall with an intriguing 3D texture. It also features a shallow alcove that acts as a ledge where the owners can display personal mementos.

With its sprawling views and generous floor space, the master bedroom is without a doubt one of the main stars of this apartment. Pavillion Creation kept the design to a minimum, and instead focused on smaller details that raise the room’s luxe appeal. These include the warm parquet floors, the padded headboard with its subtle sheen and the feature wall design with mirrored inlays.

Visual Indulgence The master bathroom boasts a stunning vista of the cityscape – the design team kept the space visually clear, with mirrors and glass panels to accentuate the space

The master bathroom boasts stunning vistas of the cityscape, something that the design team wanted to emphasise. As such, the designers kept the space visually clear, with mirrors and glass panels that accentuate the space. A large hot tub sits right next to the open windows, allowing for lavish baths that look out over the city skyline.

Bucket List

Exceptional ideas to experience in your lifetime One of the bubbles in the Calanques Mountains in Allauch, France, that give you peace and quiet amidst lush surroundings

From Top: The Bubble Suite gives a panoramic view of the night sky yet protects you from insects;

Stay in a bubble under the stars Enjoy the great outdoors and stargaze all night from the comfort and luxury of your own bubble dwelling As the famous saying by Oscar Wilde goes, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” It’s time to get out of the gutter and to gaze upon starry skies. Escape the city and head to France for a unique experience like to no other. Attrap’ Rêves allows you to rent a bubble and sleep under the stars, right in the heart of the forest. With the stars dancing overhead, lie back and enjoy a sanctuary of peace, comfort, privacy and safety.

Camping in Luxury Attrap’ Rêves was founded in 2010 by two siblings and is based in Allauch, France. This unique accommodation in the heart of nature will give you a chance to stay outdoors with no worry about muddy grounds, insects or safety. It doesn’t matter if it rains; you won’t have to fret about your belongings getting wet or

fixing that nasty leak on your tent. Catering is available, so you won’t have to trek out of the forest for meals. (No, you don’t have to go hunting or slave over firewood either.) Just relax, and snuggle up in your very own ‘bubble’, with the stars overhead. You can even opt for a 30-minute open-air Jacuzzi session, taking luxury in the wild to the next level. These bubbles are made with recyclable plastic and are maintained by a blower, which also supplies fresh air into the bubble at all times. Idyllic, surrounded by forests and greenery, yet not too far away from town, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the quiet while soaking in the freshness of Mother Nature.

Each bubble includes hotel comfort, amenities and good ventilation, this one in Zen style in Montagnac; This Bulle Glamour Montagnac room jazzes up the ambience for you and your partner

If you’re lucky, you may even encounter rabbits and squirrels scampering across or nibbling on a nut. The bubbles were built for two, so you can bring your other half for this unique and romantic vacation.

Sleeping under the Stars Imagine watching the sunset, with the sky becoming a palette of red, orange and pink. Comforting glows bask the earth with warmth before night falls. You retreat into your bubble before it gets cold outside and huddle by the heater. Each bubble comes fully-equipped with a telescope and a star chart, so whip it out and start stargazing like a pro. You’ll be able to see the Little Bear (Ursa Minor) and Great Bear (Ursa Major) constellations from the bubbles in La Bouilladisse. The abundance of stars painted across the night sky never fails to make me feel small compared to the great big world out there. Watching the night and the simple tranquillity of everything makes this a good chance for reflection, or just soaking up the emotions with someone next to you. Choose between Attrap’ Rêves’ six bubbles for a different atmosphere. The “Love Nature” bubble is popular in online reviews, especially since it comes with grass flooring and an awe-striking panoramic view of the countryside.

Getting back to Nature Attrap’ Rêves provides bubbles for five equally-stunning locations in France – Allauch , St Maime, La Bouilladisse, Montagnac-Monpezat, Forcalquier and Puget-Ville. Explore the Canlanques National Park in Allauch, boasting majestic landscapes of The Soubeyrannes Cliffs and The Calanques Mountain range. Uncover the Roman ruins at La Bouilladisse and take a hike to the caves, la grotte du Tonneau. Alternatively, find peace and quiet on a canoe at the Saint Croix Lakes and time your visit in January to pay a visit to the truffle market in the village of MontagnacMonpezat. With a different atmosphere at each site, and each immensely beautiful in its own right, the experience at Attrap’ Rêves is certainly not one to be missed. Find out more about the bubble dwellings online at www.attrap-reves.com/en. Prices start from €109 per night.

Summer Bay Resort on Lang Tengah Island, off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, is that exclusive and exotic paradiseyou’ve been searching for

Malaysia, look at what you’ve been hiding! This large sprawl of territory is home to a wealth of secret holiday hideouts, including barely-touched picturesque islands. You would likely have heard of Redang and Tioman islands – beautiful but by now all too popular with the tourist crowds. It’s time to uncover more that our scenic neighbour has hidden. I travelled deep into the country with experts in Malaysia tourism from Konsortium Express and Tours, and they unveiled to us a most stunning picture.

Sit Back and Relax Konsortium is the exclusive travel partner that connects Singapore to Summer Bay Resort. You can travel in the utmost comfort – whether with friends or family, or for a company retreat. Because our destination lies on such untouched waters, it takes ten hours by bus to get to Merang Jetty in Kuala Terengganu, followed by a 20-minute ferry ride to the island. But for such a lengthy journey, Konsortium makes it extremely comfortable. The hours fly past in the blink of an eye, thanks to the soft reclining seats that you can snuggle in. If you book the Executive Coach, you can easily burn some of the hours in the onboard lounge. Play cards or have a drink as you watch the rustic little streets of Kuala Terengganu zoom by. Along the way, you’ll be brought to the best diners and rest stops for you to fill up on. Planned by experts in Malaysia who know where all the good stuff is, Konsortium Express and Tours’ routes reveal dining options most recommended by locals.

Stunning Sights and Surprises The welcoming sight of Summer Bay on Lang Tengah Island made the ride fully worth it. A 72ha islet near Kuala Terengganu, Lang Tengah is paradise lost – but now found. The white crescent shore yawns out into a bright blue ombre sea, fronted by a jetty. Summer Bay is a haven, and the waves are smoother on this side of Lang Tengah. It’s quiet, and it’s private. There’s no fighting over lounge chairs on the beach or by the pool; and no noisy crowds disrupting your afternoon laze. There’s a large snorkelling area here where you can spot some spectacular marine species, like giant parrotfish and little clownfish peeking out of anemones. Your time spent at Summer Bay will always be exciting. Sign up for different trips organised from morning to night, and experienced guides at the resort will show you the highlights of Lang Tengah. We took a day trip out to snorkelling hotspots at the nearby Redang Island. Even if you can’t swim, the guides – who are expert divers – will happily pull you along on life buoys so you won’t miss out on the bright corals and teeming marine life in the cool waters. Lang Tengah is situated on a Marine Park belt, where corals and aquatic wildlife are protected by law. Because of this conservation effort, the island is home to a very special surprise that only pops up at night: a seabed rock that twinkles blue. A local guide will take you out to witness this truly magical discovery.

The Hakuna Matata (NO WORRIES) Life Not only are Summer Bay’s guides great at leading you out to sea, they’re perfect at singing too. Here’s a pleasant surprise: They double as crooners at the resort bar that opens at night! Grab a drink and enjoy the laid-back

tunes as you lounge under the starry night sky, or live it up loud in one of the karaoke rooms, which open until 3am. Meals throughout the day are held in a spacious cafeteria overlooking the beach, perfect for catching the sunrise and sunset over a hearty meal. There’s also a midnight café for your late-night mee goreng and nasi cravings. Summer Bay is that slow, relaxing getaway you’ve been fantasising about. It’s especially recommended for couples who’re looking for a stress-free and romantic oasis to escape to – there are plenty of scenic spots that reveal different facets of this beautiful atoll. Head out to the end of the jetty at night at high tide, and you might be able to spot glowing cuttlefish carried in by the current. Towards the end of the beach is another pier that leads out into the horizon. Here, you can catch a glimpse of a black-tip shark that often prowls the clear shore. In snorkelling waters that front the resort (don’t worry, no sharks here), corals are being grown and new species of rare fish slowly being introduced. In time, you’ll be able to see an enormous heart-shaped coral! We’re always searching for that untouched sanctuary near us. Summer Bay is all that and more.

Kick back and relax in total serenity at Summer Bay – a peaceful facility with no crowds to contend with
