Joanne Peh: Baby bump didn’t stop intense filming New mom Joanne Peh has been the talk of the town since her marriage to fellow actor Qi Yuwu – she tells Weekender about her experience filming a movie while with child Upcoming drama thriller 1965 had me gripping my seat handles in nervous suspense – but probably not for reasons you’re thinking. The intense scene I saw at the preview featured actress Joanne Peh as Chinese immigrant Zhou Jun at her family’s coffee shop during the chaotic riots of 1964. She’s being pushed and shoved by a relentless horde of rioters looting her shop. Joanne was pregnant when she filmed that scene. Now, at nine months pregnant, Joanne sports what many call “the glow”. She was excited to tell us about her baby plans – although she continues to remain secretive about her child’s gender. I dug deeper to find out more.

How have things been since your pregnancy began? It’s [the baby is] starting to move around a lot! It was kicking quite a bit just now, so I had to hurry to the ladies’. But I’ve been enjoying and appreciating this experience!

That looting sequence was intense. How did you feel during that scene? I was a little bit scared that they would push me over and I’d fall. But I didn’t want to compromise on realism – I needed them to be real so I could react. If they were doing a half-hearted attempt, it would be really difficult for me to [portray] a real sense of danger and threat. But when we saw the clip just now, I actually felt quite nervous!

You’re not the only one! You only found out halfway through filming that you’re pregnant. How different might things have been if you’d known from the start? It was good that I didn’t know at first, or I wouldn’t have done a lot of things. I would’ve been less daring, and the end product would be different.

I didn’t want to compromise on realism – I needed them to be real so I could react. Your husband, Yuwu, also stars in 1965. How did you two work together? I turned to my husband for inspiration [for my character], because he came from China and had to find his sense of home here. He told me that his sense of home is having friends and family here. That’s very true – and that’s also how it is for Zhou Jun.

Will Yuwu accompany you into the delivery room? Yes, he plans to!

What does your baby respond most to? I always imagine the baby dodging food or something because it’s really active when I’m eating! The movement is much bigger than normal and I’d jump.

So, recently, have you been resting at home or are you taking on new projects? My energy is definitely waning, so I’ll have to start resting around mid-July. But right now we’re starting to film for a variety show that charts my progress. I’ve also found my photographer for my photo shoot. [Joanne had previously expressed her desire for a nude pregnancy photo shoot.] I definitely want to record and remember this – I feel really beautiful during my pregnancy!

By Pamela Chow The film 1965 will be released in theatres on Jul 30.

SEA Games 2015: A truly extraordinary celebration The SEA Games returned to Singapore after 22 years, in the nation’s golden jubilee year – we re-look at what was extraordinary Involving over 7,000 athletes and officials across 36 sports, the 28th SEA Games recently came to an end, leaving many emotional and extraordinary moments. Host country Singapore won a record 259 medals in total, the most by any country at the Games, including 84 Gold medals. Amidst all the sporting excellence, three heroes stood out.

Extraordinary Heroes Swimming wunderkind Joseph Schooling was further entrenched as Singapore’s poster boy as he not only clinched nine Golds among other medals, he set Games records in each of the events he won. A different kind of champion, marathon runner Ashley Liew showed extraordinary sportsmanship and became the role model of the Republic. Leading the field after his rivals took a wrong turn, he chose to wait for them instead of taking advantage and eventually finished 8th. What a chap! Still, 18-year-old Muhammad Nur Alfian Juma’en was undoubtedly the champ of the Games, beating World Silat Champion Tri Dinh Nam in a fiercely-fought match that saw him sustain a large cut on his foot. Winning Singapore’s only Gold in Silat, Alfian Juma’en was overcome with emotion on the podium and tears rolled uncontrollably down his cheeks – a moment no Singaporean would forget.

LIFTING Public Experience to Greater Heights The public’s SEA Games experience was also elevated as, apart from a cash sponsorship of more than $1 million, UnionPay International, the official payment systems sponsor of the 28th SEA Games, introduced complimentary hot air balloon rides. From 8am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm at the SEA Games Carnival, the hot air balloons enabled them to enjoy a panoramic view of the Singapore Sports Hub and its scenic surroundings, reaching a maximum height of 25m. It was certainly a different way to enjoy the festivities.

Closing Ceremony & Passing on the Baton

Always on the go? Stay up to date with the latest football news, scores & stats with the ESPN FC app

Nonetheless, the Closing Ceremony also brought athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators together to a new high, featuring popular local artistes such as The Sam Willows, Tabitha Nauser and Tay Kewei. In SEA Games tradition, the next host, Malaysia, also contributed a performance. “Diversity in Motion” was a rallying call to unity for the country as it looks to host the 29th Games. Living up to “Celebrate the Extraordinary”, the 28th SEA Games acknowledged extraordinary efforts of athletes while the Ceremony also recognised the extraordinary qualities of individuals who had helped. Currently, it is the Games to beat.

TRUSTED BRANDS 2015 VOTED BY SINGAPOREANS

IN THIS DIGITAL AGE of rapid transactions, point-and-click ordering, and comparison shopping, trust has become more important than ever. For Singapore’s most trusted brands, it is worth its weight in gold. The Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Survey is now in its 17th year, recognised as the most objective and influential poll when it comes to rating the brands and services that Singaporeans trust the most. Awards were presented across 42 categories. Gold Trusted Brand Awards were given to

brands that scored significantly higher than their rivals. Platinum Trusted Brand Awards were given to brands that performed exceptionally, winning their category with a score that vastly outpolled their closest competitor. Last but not least, Asia Trusted Brand Awards were given to brands that won a Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand award in the same category for at least three of the surveyed countries. Ipsos, one of the world’s leading global market research companies, asked each Singaporean participant for the name of their

most trusted brands, and then to rate each of those brands in the following six attributes:  trustworthiness and credibility  quality  value  understanding of consumer needs  innovation  social responsibility These different criteria are used to provide a truly comprehensive overview of consumer attitudes toward brands, providing deeper insights beyond what simple “Yes/No” questionnaires can provide.

The results of the 2015 Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand survey present a captivating analysis of consumer confidence in the brands driving the Singaporean economy. The Trusted Brands survey is carried out in five markets across Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan). The Asian survey is part of a broader global initiative by Reader’s Digest, which also conducts Trusted Brand surveys in Australia and New Zealand, N o r th a n d S o uth A m e ric a , Europe and South Africa.

The centrepiece of Trusted Brands each year is the Trusted Brands Award Ceremony – an exclusive event where some of the most powerful names in the Singapore business world come together. The 2015 Trusted Brands Award Ceremony was held on the 17th of June, with the Conrad Centennial Singapore providing a luxurious setting for the event. This year’s event was hosted by Wayne Chua.

Some of the Weirdest Comic book Superheroes Arm-Fall-Off Boy

ANt-MAN may not be the biggest or coolest superhero – and Paul Rudd’s son AGREES – but the actor is convinced this movie is amazing

OR “AMAZING”?

W

Matter-Eater Lad Who made eating everything a superpower and didn’t inform us? A DC Universe character, Matter-Eater Lad hails from the planet of Bismoll, where everyone possesses the power to eat matter in all forms – except for actual food. OK, maybe that’s not so appealing.

Eye-Scream

hen we think of comic superheroes, from Marvel, DC or other publishers, many of us would imagine men or women armed to the teeth with big guns or even bigger superpowers. They would, or should, command an intimidating presence. Then there’s Ant-Man. His superpower is becoming super small. Actor Paul Rudd (from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and The 40-Year-Old Virgin), who plays the Marvel superhero in the upcoming movie, admits what most of us are thinking. “Ant-Man doesn’t scream out sexiness,” he told the Toronto Sun. When he excitedly told his nine-year-old son he was going to star in the superhero movie, the boy said, “What? I can’t wait to see how stupid that will be.” But Rudd believes this tiny titan will be a big hit, and here’s why.

Ant-Man may not be the most popular superhero in the Marvel universe, but there’s a lot to expect from this film cinematically

This Marvel villain sounds like he could be quite sinister, but he really isn’t. What’s so evil about turning into any flavour of ice cream he wants? Hmm, then again, if there was a villain I didn’t like, I would wish he had that power. I could devour him!

Paul Rudd stars as reformed expert burglar Scott Lang by day and superhero Ant-Man by night

“This idea of shrinking down and seeing things from that perspective is really cool,” Rudd said. “The world itself changes, the atmosphere changes [and] the dust in the air has an underwater quality,” he added.

Scott Lang transforms into Ant-Man, a tiny superhero with amped-up physical strength and who can command armies of ants

Highly-effective army of Ants

A Mission for the Tiniest Hero Scott Lang (Rudd) is a man with good intentions but unfortunate circumstances, having turned to crime to support his family. Recently released from jail, Scott is ready to become a real father to his daughter. But Scott’s going to have to scrap those lovely plans. His expertise in technology, physical agility and strong moral compass catch the eye of Hank Pym, the inventor of shrinking technology and ant mind-control. Hank tasks Scott with a challenging operation: steal the dangerous and highlyguarded Yellowjacket suit before any villain gets his evil hands on it. Sounds like a mission for any superhero other than the tiniest one in the book. Why was Ant-Man picked?

His name sounds like a rip-off of Fall Out Boy. Arm-Fall-Off Boy is a DC Comics superhero from the future. You’ll never guess what his superpower is – because it wouldn’t even be a guess. He detaches his limbs to use as blunt weapons. No comment.

The Yellowjacket is the highly-dangerous technology that Scott Lang, or Ant-Man, is tasked to steal

Small Body, Big Punch Before you dismiss Ant-Man with the flick of a finger, please note: when he shrinks, his physical prowess skyrockets. Imagine a tiny insect hitting your face and sending you flying across the room. That’s Ant-Man. His size also lets him go undetected, making him the perfect candidate for sneaking past normally insurmountable obstacles.

As Ant-Man enters the world of ants, we are also introduced to their fascinating and complex colonies. “The creatures and ants… have distinct personalities based on the species. The carpenter ant is like a boisterous Great Dane,” Rudd explained. “Fire ants are very organised regimented engineers who build bridges and rafts. You’ve got crazy little yellow ants that act like Chihuahuas that can conduct electricity. And you’ve got his flying carpenter ant that is like his noble steed,” he said. It sounds like there’s a lot more to expect from this film than we thought! Ant-Man was, after all, one of the founding members of The Avengers [in the comics].

Rudd enthused, “I’m really charged. You look at… outer space and it looks absolutely foreign and fascinating and beautiful. I’m hoping that’s exactly the experience you have with this, except that the space is between the floorboards and carpet.” See, dust is cosmically beautiful. Now that just gives me more reason not to clean my room, and catch this film. By Pamela Chow

What’s in store for your tummy at this year’s Ramadan Bazaar

Flower Crab Flower Crab might not be that well known as a snack but it is sure known to be delicious. These flower crabs are deep fried, making every part, including the shell, edible. You can choose to dip them into a chilli sauce, which I recommend, as it gives off a stronger flavour. Or you can consume it plain and just enjoy its natural flavour and crunchiness.

You may have had steamed Flower Crab but have you tried crunchy fried Flower Crab?

At the Ramadan Bazaar in geylang serai, you’ll get to try many mouth-watering snacks without burning a hole in your wallet – we tell you which are must-tries

Putu Bamboo Whether or not you celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, it’s hard not to be captivated by the range of colourful clothing and delicious food on display at the Ramadan Bazaar. Weekender checks out the goodies at the various stalls, to bring you a summary of the best you can find. Foodies, exult!

Putu Bamboo, also known as kueh putu or putu piring, is a traditional white or green (with pandan) snack. The rice flour, which is steamed in a hollow bamboo tube to become a rice cake, is filled with a good spoonful of gula melaka (palm sugar) and topped with grated coconut. Delight in the burst of sweetness in your mouth with every bite of the Putu Bamboo.

Pandan or red velvet churros Yes, you read it correctly. The star of this year’s Ramadan Bazaar is undoubtedly the flavoured churros (a Spanish pastry snack, if you don’t know) in flavours such as pandan and red velvet. The pandan churros come with gula melaka, and are usually sold out pretty quickly, so go early and wait in line.

Putu Bamboo, or kueh putu or putu piring, is made of steamed rice flour with gula melaka

Ramly Burger In case you don’t already know, the Ramly Burger is the Malaysian street burger that is highly popular in its home country and Singapore. It is commonly seen at the pasar malam (night market). While you wait in line to collect your burgers, watch as the patties sizzle before being drizzled with Worcestershire sauce and wrapped in a thin layer of fried egg. The cooked patty is then tucked snugly into a soft burger bun. Enjoy all that yummy-ness for just $3.50.

The humble Ramly Burger is popular at any pasar malam

Dendeng More commonly consumed during the Hari Raya Puasa season is the dendeng, which is sliced dried beef jerky or the Malay version of the bak kwa. It is preserved in a mixture of sugar and spices, sun-dried and then fried for a perfect crunchy taste. While you wait in line for your turn, watch the stall owners grill the dendeng and catch a whiff of the aromatic beef jerky.

Potato Stick This sounds like a bad translation of a potato chip, but it’s actually a unique spiralcut potato on a stick that is put into bubbling oil to be deep fried for that crunchy texture. You can even choose a flavour of sprinkles – cheesy flakes, black pepper or spicy.

By Rydell Tan

The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar for the Hari Raya festive season takes place at Lorong 33 Geylang and is open until Jul 16.

Potato Stick is a popular snack, especially for the young

Bringing the spice of Thailand to your home

Some interesting recipes that you should keep your eyes peeled for include the mouthwatering Quails and Noodles Salad.

Follow Reza Mahammad as he reconciles the Indian flavours of his motherland with new tastes he will encounter on his delicious tour of Thailand

B e e r f e s t Asia Review

New to Beerfest & the market Missed out on interesting brews at Beerfest Asia? We bring you what’s new, including what will soon be available at restaurants and bars While there were a few notable absences at Beerfest Asia 2015, the event once again premiered several new brands and brews.

Draft Denmark – Packaged Beer This is the first year Draft Denmark has participated in Beerfest. Though it only came to Singapore in November, its fresh lager beer is already distributed to over 60 entertainment establishments (on tap). Brand Manager Vasily Chuply says Draft Denmark will be bringing in packaged beer.

Flensburger – New to Market This is also the first year for Flensburger beers including the Pilsner, Gold, Radler, Dunkel, Weizen and the seasonal Fruhlingsbock. All these are new to market and distributed by the Chaoying Hospitality Group. The Radler had a lot more character and flavour than common radlers. The Dunkel, on the other hand, did not seem to taste as rich as that of Bavarian breweries.

Wunderbar – Rose Beer Ice Cream It’s only the second time for Wunderbar beers from Kaufbeuren, Bavaria in Beerfest. A new range of ABK bottled beers included Edel, a full-bodied beer with a malty taste, Dunkel, a dark Bavarian ale, and Rose, a pink concoction of half Edel and half soft drink with lemon. Hell, a golden beer with malty hop taste is also now available on tap. These will be carried by establishments such as hipster café Kombi Rocks, Brew Belly and Witbier Café. Wunderbar also introduced the new and unique Rose Beer Ice Cream with Lychee. It will soon be available to consumers.

Smith Street Taps – More Craft Beers Although the first time for Smith Street Taps, owners Meng Chao (also of Brewer’s Craft) and Daniel (known from The Good Beer Company) have been involved in various booths previously. Quite a number of beers were new, such as the Iceberg and Cherry Dark from Titanic Brewery, the limited edition Stone Stochasticity HiFi+LoFi Mixtape, the collaboration beer Amager/Surly Orange Crush Session Ale, and the Yuzu Gold by Hitachino Nest made specially in collaboration with local Japanese bar JiBiru.

Clockwise from Left: This is the first year that Flensburger beers were in Beerfest, including Pilsner, Gold, Radler, Dunkel, Weizen and Fruhlingsbock; The Mad Tapper’s founder and Cider Activist Jasmin started the business out of a passion for craft cider; Bloody Mary Ale or Pumpkin Head beer, anyone? Wunderbar also introduced the Rose Beer Ice Cream with Lychee

Pilsner Urquell – the Original PILSNER Few know that Pilsner Urquell from Plzen, Czech Republic, first brewed the original pilsner golden lager, in 1842. It made its debut under 6 Drunk Men, and is available at Potato Head Folk, Tippling Club and The Cajun Kings among others. Another beer featured by 6 Drunk Men was Grolsch Swing-Top. Grolsch's history dates back to 1615, making it one of the oldest companies in the Netherlands. According to Dave Tan, 6 Drunk Men’s marketing executive, Grolsch will soon be available to consumers.

The Mad Tapper – Many NEW Craft Ciders This is The Mad Tapper’s first time in Beerfest, as it was started only in February. Jasmin Wong, founder and “Cider Activist” enthuses, “Consumers are moving away from the mainstream, and showing increasing interest in craft products. We felt that Beerfest would be a great event to showcase our products and increase awareness of craft cider as a new product category.” The range was impressive. Several ciders were launched, such as Perry’s Cider, Atlas Cider Co., Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, Wandering Aengus and Anthem Cider. Jasmin says these are in Asia for the first time. The Hills Cider Apple & Ginger had a strong ginger taste yet was refreshing. It was flavourful compared to regular sweet cider. All the ciders are new, having been in Singapore less than three months. They will be carried by craft retailers such as Nickeldime Drafthouse and Draft & Craft, and restaurants and bars.

Archipelago – Limited Edition Archipelago Brewery introduced two limited edition brews – Hopsale and CoCo’s Cream Ale, both available from mid-July. CoCo’s Cream has hints of chocolate and vanilla while Hopsale is a pale ale that’s the result of eight different kinds of hops added at different stages. It is medium-bodied, has a strong malt flavour as well as a citrus one. Malcolm Davies, Head of Archipelago Brewery, affirms that craft beer is a fastgrowing segment here. “This has given rise to the number of craft beer outlets opening in Singapore, which can only mean good news for beer connoisseurs and craft beer enthusiasts who are now spoilt for choice with a larger selection of craft options available,” he says. As for Archipelago, he has a few plans including “to introduce new variants on the back of outgoing limited-edition brews”.

Venture no further past the comfort of your home to learn more about mouth-watering Thai food and the spices used in its dishes. In “Reza Spice Prince of Thailand” the new show on Asian Food Channel, the food on screen will certainly give you culinary inspirations and make you hungry. Try not to poke your chopsticks into the television!

The Spice Journey Spices are key to Indian cuisine and are found in every dish, and are the (not so) secret ingredients behind flavourful and comforting Indian food. This is no different in Thailand since the spice trade was vibrant throughout South Asia many years ago. For those who’ve watched “Reza Spice Prince of India”, you will find Reza’s passion for spices no surprise. The quintessential role of spices in Indian cuisine has spurred on a curiosity within Reza for spices in other cuisines. This new food programme brings him to Thailand to discover and sample its unique foods and even try his hand at some of them. Craving for exotic dishes that promise various combinations of delightful flavours?

The chief chef and proprietor of the immensely successful The Star of India, a London restaurant, Reza strives to create recipes that are inspiring, modern and uncomplicated

Durian Egg Tart Honey Bee Sweets Bee Bee, better known as Honey Bee Sweets, is a stay-at-home parent and a popular food blogger – on Instagram alone, @honeybeesweets.sg has over 35,300 followers. Popular blogger Honey Bee Sweets shares with Weekender her third recipe It’s durian season again! My hubby and I managed to lug back five big durians for only $10. Not bad a deal, especially because the meat was very aromatic and creamy! I took this opportunity to bake a batch of Durian Egg Tarts.

INGREDIENTS Makes 8 Durian Egg Tarts Sweet Pastry Dough • 130g Cake Flour • 60g Unsalted Butter, cold, cut small • 50g Confectioner’s Sugar • 2 Egg Yolks • 1/8 tsp Salt Durian Custard Filling • 1/2 tbsp Condensed Milk • A pinch Salt • 100ml Fresh Milk • 100ml Water • 1 tbsp Sugar • 100g Durian flesh • 1 Egg

METHOD Sweet Pastry Dough 1. In a large mixing bowl, add in the cake flour, powdered sugar and salt. Then, using

Durian Egg Tart

only your fingertips, work the cold butter into the mixture. Or, use a mixer to combine the ingredients until it resembles bread crumbs. 2. Next add in the egg yolks and gently work the dough but do not over-knead it. Overkneading the dough will make it hard. 3. Chill the dough in plastic wrap for at least 30 min until ready to be used. 4. Grease the mini tart tins. After chilled, take out the dough and divide the dough into eight equal portions, about 34g each. 5. Roll out each dough portion into a circular disc about the size of the tart tins. Then use your fingers to gently press in the pastry dough to shape it nicely to the tin shape. Repeat until all the pieces of the pastry dough have been shaped into the tins. 6. Put them in the fridge until needed. Durian Custard Filling 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C. 2. In a saucepan, add in durian flesh, water, sugar and salt. At low heat, stir until the sugar has melted and the durian flesh has disintegrated. 3. Strain the mixture, leaving the fibres and membranes of the durian flesh. 4. Stir in the milk, condensed milk and egg. Mix well. Again, strain mixture. 5. Divide the custard filling equally among the chilled pastry tart shells. 6. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 min until the custard is slightly firm to the touch or not wobbly. By HoneyBeeSweets Honeybeesweets.sg

Virtual Reality (VR) and holographic technology are no longer just figments of our imagination with these latest gadgets from Samsung and Microsoft

The Microsoft HoloLens has a mapping feature that enables the user to mix holograms with the actual environment that he or she is in, making futuristic dreams a reality

It is without a doubt that VR and Holographic Technology are in the next big frontier of both the entertainment and computer industries. The technology we once knew to be just science fiction is no longer that distant or impossible. In fact, it is already here and it really isn’t as scary as it may seem to be. With the introduction of Samsung’s Gear VR Innovator Edition, powered by Oculus Technology, and Microsoft’s HoloLens, we move one step closer to this new reality that is set to bring us endless hours of pure entertainment and, in the process, help to make certain tasks more convenient. For example, you no longer have to turn on your computer in order to play games, watch a movie or surf the Internet.

The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition was really comfortable to wear without being excessively heavy even with a Samsung Galaxy S6 attached

The back of the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition that fits the face

Samsung Gear VR Edition When it comes to leading technology for smartphone devices, you can bet your last dollar that Samsung would have a part in it. Take its latest VR gadget to hit our shores for example, the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition powered by Oculus Technology. For those who are not too familiar with Oculus, it is one of the pioneers of VR headsets around the world. We had the opportunity to test out the Samsung Gear VR and, let us tell you, it was a truly immersive experience like no other. The visuals, although slightly pixelated, were lifelike enough for us to be shocked yet extremely amused at the same time. In order to launch the VR experience, there is a dedicated mobile application for this, named Oculus, from which you download games and videos from a rather large library to be enjoyed during your VR experience.

Enjoyable Yet BatteryDraining The Samsung Gear VR was really comfortable to wear without being excessively heavy even with a Samsung Galaxy S6 attached to it. Thanks to its ergonomic design, flexible cushioning and adjustable strap, it made VR gaming so much more pleasant. However, the entire VR experience is extremely battery-draining. Playing a game with the Gear VR for around 20 minutes will consume around 15 per cent or more of your smartphone’s battery life. For those who are wearing spectacles, not to worry, Samsung has got you covered. There is a knob on top of the Gear VR that allows you to calibrate the viewing angle, which in turn helps you to see the graphics better without your glasses on. Just one really sad feature about the Gear VR: It is only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S6. Yes, we know, we are just as bummed out about this as you are. The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition powered by Oculus Technology is only available in Frost White and retails for $298.

Microsoft HoloLens Now this – the Microsoft HoloLens – this is holographic technology that’s clearly

The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition is powered by Oculus Technology, one of the pioneers of VR headsets

on steroids or from the wildest dreams of Star Trek or Tron made into reality. Who needs a computer screen anymore with the all-new and super-exciting Microsoft HoloLens headset? As its name suggests, this works on holographic technology that projects 3D images when you put on the headset. Its possibilities are pretty much endless, from shaping holograms to fine-tuning a design for a car. The HoloLens quite literally gives your ideas life.

Holo-Environment? The HoloLens has a mapping feature that enables the user to mix holograms with the actual environment that he or she is in. What this means is that you’re able to place holograms in your room or office like how you would place a physical object. Like sci-fi come to life! Cool, huh? If you are wondering how this is controlled, well, with gestures and voice of course! No wires, smartphones or a connection to a physical computer of any sort is needed. When Microsoft says that it is changing the way that you see your world with the HoloLens, it really means business. Unfortunately, the Microsoft HoloLens is still not yet available for sale and is still in the development stage. By Geralyne Kaye

Free radical damage to the body is said to cause cancer, diabetes and hypertension.

Hill tribe villagers in Vietnam seem to live an idyllic life

1. Ensure that the community you’re visiting is happy to have tourists in their home – if not on tour, check with a local. 2. Visit with an open mind, and remember that this is a mutual learning experience 3. Ask for permission before snapping photos of people or sacred sites. 4. Research on taboos of that particular culture before you go, and be respectful. 5. If you’re arranging your own tour, pay the driver separately and give your money directly to the village chief.

Spend some time among the mountains and hamlets of Sapa, and learn about the lives of diverse communities of ethnic minorities in Vietnam

Go back to basics in a farm stay in Taiwan, and help out with the local businesses of the indigenous tribes

Connect with the authentic native cultures of the Australian Aborigines through a variety of Aboriginal tours in the Outback

Stay in a Farm in Taiwan

Kayak through the Aboriginal Lands of Australia

The village of Sapa might be 350km from Hanoi, but it’s very easily accessible by train via Lao Cai railway station. The village, located in Lao Cai province, rests near Vietnam’s highest peak, Fansipan. Sapa is home to five main ethnic minority groups: the H’mong, Tao, Tay, Zay and Xa Pho. Most of them inhabit the hamlets scattered throughout the networks of valleys here. Trek through the terraced rice fields and visit the villages Cat Cat and Sin Chai, where you can learn about local traditions and daily life against the stunning backdrop of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range of the eastern Himalayas. For more information on Sapa and recommended tours, visit www.sapa-vietnam.com.

Min su, or homestays, are all the rage in Taiwan – and it’s easy to see why. In village and farm homestays, you get to ride horses beside the beautiful mountainscape, harvest sweet-smelling fruit from sprawls of orchards, tea leaves from tea bushes, frolic with sheep and even go grass skiing. Try visiting the Old Village Chief’s Guest House in the Alishan National Scenic Area, built by a former Chashan village chief of the Bunun tribe. Be immersed in the modern Tsou and Bunun life, play in the mini-zoo and help out in the vegetable garden behind the guest house. Staying at these lodgings helps to boost the revenue of rural farms and villages of Taiwan too. For more information on min su, visit www.go2taiwan.net.

The aborigines are an integral part of Australian history but they’re not always accurately portrayed in the media. What better way to learn about authentic native cultures of Oz than to get up close and personal to them? Many exciting types of tours can bring you to the diverse tribes in Australia. You can kayak with professionals down Bulgan Creek and connect with the history of Jirrbal ancestors, or even access a highly-restricted area of Aboriginal-owned Arnhem Land in a four-day tour. The wonders of rural Australia and its native cultures await to be unravelled. For more information on Aboriginal tourism, visit www.aboriginalaustralia.com.au.

Visiting and even staying on authentic heritage lands is possibly the best way to experience and appreciate other cultures and countries – something you might not experience if you stick with urban comforts. Choosing locally-owned accommodation gives back to the community you’re staying with. However, it’s also important to choose the right tours to travel with! Here are four picks from around the world that offer the best of cultural exchanges.

The second instalment of this free-entry fair expects more than the 70,000 visitors it received in March

Travel Revolution brings back more bargains when some of biggest players in the travel industry will be there.

Even More Bargains

The second Travel Revolution fair will bring 20 per cent more travel agencies to the halls, with pioneer exhibitors expanding their booth space. To date, more than 70 exhibitors have confirmed their participation. Major exhibitors you can expect at this event include EU Holidays, Chan Brothers Travel, Nam Ho Travel and Konsortium Express & Tours. This second fair will also continue to have revolutionary prices like that of the first fair, promising you more value, greater deals and more amazing travel experiences. It will be held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo Halls D to F. The Himba tribe of Namibia, known for its beautiful women and survival techniques, has been welcoming tourists to its home in recent years

Make Jewellery with the Tribes of Africa Africa is perhaps one of the most coveted destinations for cultural tourism. The pastoral Himba tribe of Namibia is especially popular for the women’s dramatic beauty and red ochre-dyed skin. Visit one of their villages for a humbling look at their architecture and survival lifestyle, and learn to create intricate accessories from iron and shell beads. However, it’s important to choose a tour that not only shows you true tribal cultures but that also looks out for the villagers’ welfare. You can arrange a tour to Opuwo in northern Namibia, which is fully owned by the Himba, ensuring that the tribe receives all the money that you pay.

Exclusive Exhibitors

What surprises will be in store in this second Travel Revolution fair?

Following the success of the 1st Travel Revolution in April, the Singapore Outbound Travel Agents Association is back for seconds – save the date for the 2nd Travel Revolution fair of 2015 to get more travel deals and steals If you didn’t make it to the first Travel Revolution fair in April, you may have missed out. Never fear, there is another one coming up very soon. The three-day, free-entry fair earlier this year drew over 70,000 visitors, who were treated to a 17,000sqm sprawl of major travel brands hawking their best bargains. Mark your calendars for the next upcoming Travel Revolution fair, from Jul 24 to 26. You’ll be able to grab a great package or two for your year-end holiday. Don’t miss out

Some of these agencies – many of which are crowd favourites – will be exhibiting exclusively at this fair. These companies form the new Singapore Outbound Travel Agents Association (SOTAA), which currently comprises 25 members including Chan Brothers Travel, CTC Travel and Dynasty Travel. The association was initiated by Singapore’s travel power players who pulled out of the NATAS (National Association of Travel Agents Singapore) fair in March this year, citing unsatisfactory processes and admission charges for the public. Banking officer Stephanie Loi, 32, is looking forward to the event. Ms Loi, who patronised the first Travel Revolution fair with her family, was drawn by the attractive packages to Taiwan but chose to hold out for the next fair. “I’ll definitely be heading down to see what bigger bargains I can get this time,” she said.

Volcanic ash and minerals are responsible for the unique colour of this beach paradise. Travellers to this unique beach like to look

Art & The marine ecosystems Through the passage of time, these sculptures are influenced and changed by the water conditions, as well as by the corals and algae that grow on them. The art created by Taylor becomes vibrant and reflective of the unpredictable nature of the underwater landscape. One MUSA installation, titled the “Silent Evolution”, is reflective of Taylor’s unique style, where some 500 sculptures, moulded from real people, are built to withstand even a hurricane.

Most people have heard of the ancient legend of Atlantis, the fabled city that sunk to the bottom of the sea around 9600 BC. Until today, scientists are still debating about where exactly Atlantis is. Today, there is a new – and easily accessible – Atlantis to feast your eyes on and to be amazed by. Created by British sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor, the new Atlantis comes in the form of an underwater sculpture park at Cancun, Mexico, where snorkellers or scuba divers swim past submerged statues of life-sized cars and human figurines among bright fish and coral reefs. These eerie but captivating sculptures at the Cancun Underwater Museum (or MUSA in Spanish) will be sure to leave an impression, both on the visitor and the environment around them.

Have a comfortable yet exciting adventure in exotic Dubai with EU Holidays, the experts in outbound tourism. Visit the tallest building in the world – the Burj Khalifa – or have unforgettable fun in Dubai’s many sprawling water parks! The package includes a pair of Economy return air tickets by Singapore Airlines, a 4D3N stay at Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai and a desert safari tour by 4WD.

“Antropocene” features a life-sized Volkswagen that sends a powerful message about the impact that human inventions, especially motorised vehicles, have on the environment

All of Taylor’s sculptures are designed to become artificial reefs

Another installation, “Antropocene”, features a Volkswagen, sending a powerful message about the impact humans and technology have had on our planet’s fragile ecosystem. All of his sculptures are designed to become artificial reefs, promoting the growth and recovery of corals in the region. They also promote the breeding of marine life and create areas of refuge for them.

Visiting the Museum Taylor’s sculptures at MUSA can be also accessed by scuba diving and glassbottomed boats. The museum is separated into two galleries, Salon Manchones and Salon Nizuc, which are 8m and 4m deep respectively. The first gallery permits both divers and snorkellers while the second only permits snorkellers. Taylor is currently working on a project in Lanzarote, Spain, which revolves around a dialogue between past and present as well as the relationship between art and nature, that is scheduled to be completed in 2016. The project will include architectural installations and an underwater botanical sculpture garden, the first ever in the world. It also has a unique status as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
