JEREMY’S NO, IT’S NOT an alien invasion but something that may appear close to it. Animal Planet takes you through an astonishing fourpart special about seemingly harmless creatures that have transformed themselves into terrible invaders of their habitats. Unbeknownst to us, “The Conquerors” are taking over the world at an alarming rate. They eat, they kill and they lay waste to the land that they are alien to without a moment’s hesitation. A scary thought, isn’t it? AN UNRIVALLED STRANGLEHOLD The king crab, the pine processionary caterpillar, the lionfish and the fire ant – as far as biologists are aware – are responsible for the fastest animal invasions in recent decades, making them the most successful invaders on Earth. At the rate that these creatures are taking over eco systems, you can’t help but wonder how much of our planet we will have left in a few years’ time. In their native habitats, these creatures form part of the ecological balance but once introduced by man into new territories, they wipe out other species, monopolise food supplies and can be fiercely territorial, ultimately posing a threat to the existing biodiversity. In these new environments, they have developed strategies to conquer their new territories and have even modified their genes to adapt to unfamiliar settings. In simple words, they are evolving to destroy and to overcome. THE SECRETS TO SUCCESS The scientific community, in this four-part special, seeks to find out the reasons for the success of these
creatures. They seek answers in order to better understand the threat that these aggressors represent to their environments; probing their capacity for genetic modification, behavioural change and reorganisation of social hierarchy which allows them to establish unrivalled dominion over new terrains. “The Conquerors” follows this global investigation and, with the help of these experts, will reveal the formidable biological advantages of these exceptional species and the methods being explored to control their frightening progression. A FIERY DOOM? One of them is the ravenous fire ants. One colony can contain up to 40 million individuals, and they are able to exterminate all other species, confiscate
food for their own use and aggressively defend their territory. They are commonly called fire ants because of the burning venom that they inject with their stingers, located at the extremity of their abdomens. Is there no way to stop or hinder the warpath of these tiny terrors? In order to understand the devastating success of these creatures and its impact upon the world and on us, follow these scientists on a study that documents their patterns and behaviour. I am also working on an Anthology Book of my original compositions which will be released in the second quarter of 2014.
TELL US SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU. That I was the founding vicepresident of the Vegetarian Society of Singapore. But I am no longer vegetarian now because of doctor’s orders. WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND WHY? I usually live my life in a state of bliss, with some times which are challenging but no one thing makes me happy. But that moment after I complete a composition that I like, or play a great solo on a show and when the band is poppin’... those moments are priceless to me.

Adrian Wisnicki leads a team of digital scientists to reveal a startling new picture of an explorer haunted by his obsessions. With the help of stateof-the-art, multi-spectral imaging first invented by NASA, Wisnicki and his team decipher the field diaries that were deemed illegible, written on old newspaper clippings with faded berry ink. It is revealed that Livingstone’s deepest anxieties and thoughts are at their peak when he witnesses a bloody massacre in a village. The sheer size made it almost impossible to bite down on it without it falling apart. We wish that we could choose the patty’s doneness as well, for a better texture. A NEW HOEGAARDEN Rosée brew has recently arrived in Singapore, in a lively launch at Ku Dé Ta club lounge at the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark. This new rosée from the popular beer brand, Hoegaarden, is exclusively available at Ku Dé Ta for the next six months. The new Hoegaarden Rosée was launched in end-November, with much fanfare. Guest DJ Andrew T entertained together with Ku Dé Ta’s resident DJs, Yafifth and Doze. FRUITY AND ROSY The star of the night, of course, was the new addition to the Hoegaarden beer family. The Hoegaarden Rosée is similar in body to the original Hoegaarden wheat beer that many are familiar with but it is infused with the fruity zest of raspberries. It is a naturally-sweet brew with a fruity aroma, and with subtle hints of spice and coriander. Like the original wheat version, the Rosée is unfiltered, giving it a cloudy appearance. Its colour has hues of delicate pink to light orange. Lower in alcohol at 3 per cent, it is refreshing yet not too strong. One could say that this is a coup by the popular Belgian brewers, Hoegaarden Brewery.

1 packet Unicurd Black Soybean Tau Kwa, cut into bite-sized cubes 80g long beans, blanched lightly in salted water for 1 min 1 tablespoon olive oil 10 curry leaves

METHOD
1. Heat up a non-stick pan with olive oil until it is hot. Lightly fry the tau kwa (fried bean curd) to a light, crispy texture and set aside. 2. Using the same non-stick pan, fry the red shallots, curry leaves and garlic until fragrant. 3. Add the dried shrimp, sliced red chilli and kecap manis (sweet soy sauce). 4. Add long beans, fried shallots and tau kwa. Season to taste.

WHAT IS COLLAGEN? Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids, which are in turn built of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Collagen contains specific amino acids – glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine. It makes up approximately 30 per cent of the proteins within the body. These are tough and strong structures found all over the body such as the bones, tendons and ligaments. Collagen can be found exclusively in animals, especially in the flesh and in the connective tissues of mammals. It is part of the connective tissue in the skin that helps with firmness, suppleness and constant renewal of skin cells. It is vital for skin elasticity. Ligaments are also a type of connective tissue that attach two bones and hold the joints together. All of these tissues, bones, ligaments and tendons as well as the skeletal muscles are made up of protein. One of the predominant proteins is the collagen.
Personal hygiene vital to health this year end SINGAPOREANS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEASONAL FLU, RESPIRATORY ILLNESS AND OTHER ILLNESSES RELATED TO CROSS-CONTAMINATION DURING THE YEAR-END PERIOD WITH THE YEAR-END festive season approaching, mass gatherings such as parties, concerts, festive shopping sprees and group travelling increase the possibility of disease transmission among Singaporeans. To better educate the public on preventive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from falling ill, Dettol recently commissioned a survey to understand the hygiene habits of Singaporeans. SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEASONAL ILLNESSES According to Dettol’s latest survey of 500 respondents, aged between 20 and 65 years old, it was found that Singaporeans who fall ill during the year-end festive season commonly fall prey to the seasonal flu, respiratory illness or illnesses related to contamination, particularly where they frequent mass gathering occasions. Of those that fall ill, 70 per cent are most likely to catch the seasonal flu and 68 per cent of them have expressed a high tendency to develop respiratory illnesses like the common cold, cough and sore throat. In addition, 42 per cent reportedly suffer from cross-contamination related illnesses.
The survey also highlighted that 50 per cent of the respondents do not realise that these infectious diseases are easily contracted through poor personal hygiene. The majority attribute the sources of these infectious diseases to be from people who are infected,

STRUCTURE OF COLLAGEN Collagen microscopically occurs in elongated fibrils. It is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendon, ligaments and skin and is also abundant in cornea, bone, blood vessels, cartilage, intervertebral discs and the digestive tract. In muscle tissue, collagen serves as a major component of endomysium. About 1 to 2 per cent of the muscles are formed of collagen and around 6 per cent of the total weight of muscles is formed of collagen. Gelatin used in food is collagen that has been irreversibly hydrolysed. In the 1930s, collagen was first discovered to have a molecular structure. Collagen is further packed into fibrillar collagen types with hexagonal or quasi-hexagonal shapes. The packing may be sheetlike or micro-fribillar. WHAT DOES COLLAGEN DO? Collagen helps to give strength to various structures of the body and also protects structures such as the skin by preventing absorption and spreading of pathogenic substances, environmental toxins, microorganisms and cancerous cells. ere is a great way to transform a dull wall at home into a centre of attention simply by using photos as well as a few nice frames. With these few handy tips, you’re all set to take your great photos to the next level – your family wall. TIP 1: SHOOT PHOTOS WITH QUALITY CAMERAS Since you want the family wall to be beautiful, you should start with good quality pictures. I would recommend pictures taken with at least a Compact Digital Camera. Their quality and higher resolution typically make the pictures sharper and richer in detail. TIP 2: CHOOSE A WALL It can be the wall in the hallway, behind the dining table, in the kitchen, or at the entrance. Anywhere is fine as long as it is in a common family area. However, do choose an area that isn’t too cluttered for the framed photos to stand out.
TIP 3: PLAN THE WALL SPACE No matter how you plan it, just make sure you follow a simple grid. The most important areas are in the centre of the space. Do note that the eye-level photos get the most views. So, use a few large photos to “anchor” the overall space, and then cluster the smaller ones around it. TIP 4: USE QUALITY PRINTING To fill up the wall space, you will need to have a few large-sized photos, preferably A3 size or bigger. Phone cam photos are terrible when printed. Their poor image quality is more evident when printed in high resolution. Avoid using these photos for your family wall. Once you have identified
which pictures you want in which frames, have them printed. You can do it yourself with good printers such as the Canon Pixma printers, or send them to the photo hubs to print. TIP 5: THE PICTURES MATTER, NOT THE FRAME. Don’t spend a lot of money on frames. Look for bargains from dollar stores or IKEA and pick up simple, no-frills frames. You can get them in various sizes for the different-sized photos but the materials they’re made of should (whether wood, plastic, glass or metal, etc.) be the same, or at least appear similar in consistency so that it doesn’t detract from the photos. TIP 6: LEAVE ROOM FOR FUTURE PHOTOS Don’t fill up every single space on the wall. Leave room for future photos from future milestones. And, don’t forget to bring your Compact Digital Camera!

LAST YEAR, siblings Jaime and Philip Lim (a well-known food blogger) took part in the Bosch Dream Kitchen Cook-off, which saw amateur cooking teams battle each other to win a Bosch Dream Kitchen makeover. The prize was worth $30,000 and included Bosch home appliances (such as a built-in oven, chimney hood, gas hob and dishwasher), kitchen cabinets, fittings and accessories from Blum, and quartz counter tops from Belenco. The Masterchef-like competition ended on Dec 14 last year, with Jaime and Philip being crowned the winners.

80 years of flying to Singapore BRITISH AIRWAYS’ CABIN CREW TOOK TO A DIFFERENT KIND OF RUNWAY AS THE AIRLINE HOSTED A FASHION SHOW TO CELEBRATE 80 YEARS OF FLIGHTS TO COMMEMORATE British Airways’ 80th anniversary of regular flights to Singapore, a different kind of fashion show was held at Eden Hall, home of the British High Commissioner. The show featured uniforms from the 1940s to today, by renowned designers including Hardy Amies – the former dress designer for Queen Elizabeth II. The outfits were modelled by British Airways Singapore-based cabin crew and models. “Singapore holds a very special place in our company’s history, so this is a very exciting milestone for us,” said Robert Williams, British Airways Regional General Manager, South-East Asia, who hosted the event.
THE FIRST FLIGHT On Dec 9, 1933, the airline’s first regular service to Singapore departed London – a journey that originally took ten days. The inaugural flight to Singapore on what was then Imperial Airways departed from Croydon, London, and travelled via Paris, Brindisi, Alexandria, Cairo and Karachi. A one-way fare to Singapore cost £180, which was just below the average yearly salary at the time. Singapore has historically been an integral part of British Airways’ network, linking the UK with both Australia and the rest of Southeast Asia. PRESENT STRENGTHS Today, British Airways offers a twicedaily service to London and a daily service to Sydney. On Oct 15, British Airways was awarded “Best Airline”, “Best Airport Lounge”, “Best Frequent Flyer Programme” and “Best First Class” by readers of Business Traveller magazine.

“WISH”, THE CENTREPIECE of the “Wishes on the Wind” programme of Hong Kong WinterFest, comprises three humongous dandelion flowers. From now until Jan 1, 2014, the dandelions will be lit up from 6pm every day, spreading light and warm wishes to visitors and residents. GIANT WISH CARRIERS “WISH” comprises three 15-metre high (about five storeys) dandelions whose stems are made of glass and mosaics, as well as a number of onemetre high seeds scattered across Stature Square. There are also smaller seeds in the flowers, consisting of 36,000 LEDs. The large sculpture took US artist Robert Buchholz and his team about ten days to install. The lighting effects are specially-
programmed such that the seeds create different colours. Every 15 minutes, “WISH” changes colour to the rhythm of Mariah Carey’s cover song “All I Want for Christmas is You”, illuminating the Square and enhancing the festive ambience. There is a belief that if you make a wish before blowing on a dandelion and letting its seeds dance in the wind, your wish will come true. “WISH” intends to have the wishes of its spectators carried in the wind. Buchholz has said that the three dandelions are representations of his parents and him.
