Op de cover Deze editie is een dubbelnummer i.v.m. Carnaval. De voorpret begint al met de Vasteloavendconcerten van philharmonie zuidnederland. Dirigent Matty Cilissen, presentator Raymond Clement en een keur aan artiesten maken van De Limburger Vastelaovendconcerten weer een mix van klassiek en carnaval. Het geheel staat onder leiding en regie staat van Michel Sluysmans en Servé Hermans, de twee artistiek leiders van Toneelgroep Maastricht. Zie tip, p. 10. We gaan ervan uit dat we (alleen) denken met ons brein op onze jacht naar kennis, maar weten we dat het lichaam kan denken en ons kan helpen meer te weten te komen? Joost Vrouenraets verkent de relatie tussen waanzin, de menselijke wervelkolom en Shakespeare’s Hamlet in complex choreografisch proces. Deze bijzondere zoektocht was ook het afstudeerproject van zijn onderzoekt (CODARTS). In zijn lezing deelt hij de resultaten van zijn onderzoek van de afgelopen twee jaar en zet hij uiteen hoe we nieuwe inzichten verkrijgen door het gebruik van het (bewegende) lichaam en benadrukt de epistemologische relevantie van het inzetten van het lichaam als instrument in de wetenschap. Hij wordt bijgestaan door componist en jazzpianist Jacob Chiang. Voertaal deze avond is Engels. 11

Te midden van alle horrorverhalen over de Tweede Wereldoorlog is er in het algemeen weinig aandacht voor de beproevingen van het Russische volk, en nog minder voor het lot van de circa één miljoen Russische vrouwen die aan het front vochten. In Beanpole maken we kennis met twee van hen. Ija is een boomlange (vandaar de titel: Engels voor bonenstaak) verpleegster in een ziekenhuis vol gewonden uit de oorlog. Ze is niet helemaal hersteld van een zware hersenschudding tijdens de oorlog en vervalt daardoor regelmatig in een catatonische toestand. Ija is bevriend met Masja, die ook in het ziekenhuis komt werken en wiens kind zij verzorgt. De twee vrouwen hebben een gecompliceerde relatie en proberen elk op hun eigen manier te 16 overleven. Een dramatische gebeurtenis voert de druk verder op.

Het ultieme ‘broertje van’ want deze Chris Jagger is inderdaad familie van de wereldberoemde Mick Jagger van The Rolling Stones. Chris is een creatief manusje-van-alles en schreef mee aan The Rolling Stones albums Dirty Work en Steel Wheels. Daarnaast werkte hij samen met grootheden als Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton en David Gilmour. Wat muziek betreft lopen de interesses van de broers flink uiteen: het werk van Chris bestaat uit een mix van rhythm & blues met folk, cajun en zydeco. Jagger’s nummers hebben een laidback sfeer en een onvervalste, broeierige 18 sound uit het diepe zuiden van Amerika.

Herman zet bij het gokken alles in, in de overtuiging dat hij de geheime formule kent waarmee hij niet kan verliezen bij het kaarten. Het tegendeel blijkt helaas waar. Tsjaikovski baseerde zijn Schoppenvrouw, die in 1890 in Sint-Petersburg in premiĂ¨re ging, op het gelijknamige, duistere verhaal van Alexander Puschkin. Hij maakte van Pique Dame een zinderende, meeslepende opera over de jacht op rijkdom en de zoektocht naar liefde. In de bus verzorgt operakenner Len van Schaik een boeiende inleiding. JEUGD

Jeu van Sint Fiet is a general practitioner whose entire office has been designed by artist Joep van Lieshout. Van Sint Fiet is an art collector, and part of his collection is on display in his surgery. He feels that the artworks contribute to the healing process of his patients as well as improve his communication with them. The Project Art & Medicine is a series by the Van Eyck Academy which is based on the mutual curiosity and interest in humans and the human body. Both art and medicine once held a very strong bond. With many societal and technological changes and developments, these two worlds began opposing each other, with the discipline of medicine representing objectivity and the art world symbolising subjectivity. In Spatial Score, former Van Eyck participant Nina Glockner will lead a performative lecture and explore if and how space influences the interaction between medical staff and their patients. Based on her experience visiting general practitioner Jeu van Sint Fiet, whose workspace Mediville was developed by Atelier van Lieshout and is filled with his personal art collection, Glockner will share a visual analysis of selected spatial characteristics in relation to their functionality and guiding manipulating Power.

The presentation format was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture in Tokyo in 2003 and has now spread to over 1,300 cities around the world.

Its Carnival: the Dutch either love it or hate it. Those living in the southern provinces of Brabant and Limburg love it and celebrate it with a passion. In Maastricht, carnival is called Vastelaovend: a threeday celebration of life, beer and friendship. On Sunday at 12.11 p.m., 11 shots are fired by the Momus cannon and the ‘Mooswief’ is hoisted on the Vrijthof to officially kick off Carnival. At 1.33 p.m., the ‘Groeten Optoch’ (The Great Procession) starts in the Wyck district. A motley crew of colourful carnival revellers proceed with their floats through the city centre towards the Vrijthof. On Monday at 2.11 p.m., the Family Parade starts from Wyckerbrugstraat. This parade is traditionally preceded by the ‘Knuipkesregen’, and then followed by children, families, floats and ‘Hermeniekes’ (small brass bands) who follow the Prince in a family ‘Boonte Storm’ (colourful storm) through Wyck towards the Vrijthof. On Tuesday at 12.30 p.m. in various places in the city centre, Hermeniekes (small brass bands) tour various jury cafés. On the Vrijthof, the brass bands blow their hearts out for the jury, targeting the maximum 111 points and winning the prize. At midnight, the closing ceremony ends the 2020 Carnival in Maastricht, which concludes when 22 the Mooswief on the Vrijthof is taken down.
