Royal Flying Doctor Service will start operating from Horsham this week.

Horsham will become one of three new bases that will provide Mobile Patient Care services to transfer non-emergency patients by road to hospitals, specialist treatment and home.

The other bases will be in Ballarat and Wodonga. They will complement other bases at Maffra, Wonthaggi, Shepparton, Mildura and Wangaratta with air capability from Essendon airport.

The Horsham base officially started operating yesterday but already had transfers last Monday. It will have up to eight staff members and operate two to three vehicles. The service expects to make more than 120 trips a month.

RFDS Victoria chief executive Scott Chapman said Mobile Patient Care services would complement the work of Ambulance Victoria, with

Shire to open doors for regional living expo tour Yarriambiack Shire will be the first of more than 20 rural and regional Victorian municipalities to host a series of open days starting this month.

The shire will officially welcome visitors to its rural communities on Saturday as part of an extension of a 10day Regional Victoria Living Expo in Melbourne.

The concept is aimed at providing a day or weekend

Three-team arts project to study field behaviour

A

football match where three teams instead of two play simultaneously in one game is earmarked for Horsham later this year as part of an artistic study into human behaviour.

In what looms as one of the most bizarre projects to unfold on a Wimmera sports field, Melbourne visual artist Gabrielle de Vietri will set out to challenge ‘the norm’ with the concept.

She and community development worker Renae Fomiatti, also of Melbourne, have already done considerable preliminary work on the project and expect a new type of football game to emerge from the process later this year.

“The concept is about exploring conflict and competition in different ways and to suggest that things aren’t always in black and white,” she said.

“Football is so steeped in tradition so what better challenge than to use something so ingrained. It’s obviously going to be difficult and we need a lot of community help,” she said.

Arts Victoria and the Australia Council for the Arts are funding the project tentatively scheduled to reach its climax at Cornell Park on August 18.

Ms Vietri’s explained in her project brief: “The re-imagining of game formats can have social, cultural and political implications. In sport, as in politics, competition is very often approached either as binary phenomenon or an individual struggle.

“The elimination of the twoteam structure, and the manipulation of the rules of the game accordingly, will expose alternative ways of approaching competition and conflict,” she said.

“In a three-team Aussie Rules game, the success of a team will no longer lie solely in the strength of its players.

As well as skill, fitness and team-work, players will have to approach the game in a morally strategic and intelligently cooperative way.”

Community input Ms Vietri said community input and involvement was critical and she had been delightfully surprised in the response from Horsham district clubs.

“I’ve had no one say ‘you can’t do that’ which for me was a big win. Of course we’ve had a few sideways looks but in general people are keen to explore how this could happen and imagine new pos-

tleground where part of the fight will involve a group lobbying for the retention of traditional values while at the other end of the spectrum others will be raging against the machine.

Somewhere in this move forward is the balance we call Australian life.

We need only look at our personal experiences for examples of change in perception and sensibilities.

For example, about 30 years ago, a group of Horsham youths in their mid to late teens sneaked behind Central Park tennis clubrooms to share half a dozen stubbies of beer.

We heard one shopper remark as they entered their car: “Look, they just can’t wait to get pissed.”

Later, in raising general concerns with a friend about what we had experienced his fatalistic response rammed home how much times had changed: “Well, at least we know it’s alcohol and they were obviously off to somewhere well organised.

It could be something much worse.

And hey, none of them was smoking, right?”

Yes, times have indeed changed.

Canberra man who with his wife sold their Canberra business to help people in need is literally ‘bouncing’ his way through the Wimmera region as part of a 4400-kilometre journey to raise awareness for global poverty.

Matt Napier, bouncing a football as he walks from Perth to Sydney, made his way through Kaniva and Nhill early this week, bounced his way into Dimboola yesterday and will be in Horsham today.

The former garden-maintenance business operator, who started his journey on February 2, will walk into Stawell tomorrow and Ararat on Saturday before continuing his trek to Beaufort next week.

He expects to take more than five-million steps crossing the country and as already met vast range of people from Federal Members of Parliament to footballers, appearing at half time in a Port Adelaide-West Coast game at AAMI stadium last weekend.

Mr Napier took on the challenge as a way of raising awareness of the 1.3 billion people who live in extreme poverty around the world and the 7.6 million children under the age of five who die every year from starvation and related illnesses.

He and his wife Wendy took their passion of seeing an end to global poverty within the next generation to found The Global Poverty Walk.

The Perth-Sydney walk is is the couple’s second project. Last year they sold their business to embark on The Long Ride to Stop the Poverty Cycle and spent six weeks riding across Australia by bicycle.

Mr Napier said the ride was such a success that they made a decision to ‘up’ the challenge.

The Child Care Rebate is not income tested.

It pays up to 50% of your out-of-pocket costs.

yclists taking part in an annual 10-day, 1521-kilometre Tour de Cure from Adelaide to Canberra swept through the Wimmera early this week in a project to raise $2.3-million in the fight to cure cancer.

Riders from nine corporate teams, who started the ride from Adelaide last Friday, rode into Kaniva, Nhill, Dimboola and Horsham on Monday before heading to Bendigo on Tuesday and Benalla yesterday. They expect to be in Albury today and Canberra on Sunday.

Optus, a tour diamond partner of the tour with a team riding in the event, organised a ‘bicycle bell band’ to welcome the team with a chorus of bicycle bells as it cycled past ‘yes’ Optus Horsham store in Firebrace Street.

The annual Tour de Cure started in 2007 and has featured rides from Brisbane to Sydney, Melbourne to Sydney, Brisbane to Cairns, Sydney to the Sunshine Coast, Sydney to Melbourne and Brisbane to Mission Beach.

New College funding a drop in the ocean

Horsham College community leader has described almost a quarter of a million dollars in State Government maintenance funding for the school as ‘like using a Band-Aid to fix a broken arm’.

Horsham College school council president Rowan Smith said he welcomed the funding increase with open arms but with fellow councilors feared $229,798 would come at the expense of ‘desperately needed’ rebuilding money.

He said the contribution represented ‘a drop in the ocean’ for what was needed.

“We are thrilled to see that the State Government has recognised the need for funding for much-needed maintenance, a need which far exceeds our previous annual allocations,” Mr Smith said.

“Last year when the college celebrated its centenary the school council allocated $189,436 to be spent on longoverdue maintenance to paint, update and renovate areas of the school so that it would be presentable for hundreds of visiting ex-students.

“Let’s hope that the generous maintenance funds are not just a drop in the ocean but will be the first trickle in a future flood of capital funding needed to finally construct the consolidation and redevelopment.

We remain optimistic for good news in the State Budget.”

Mr Delahunty said the funding was part of the government’s $60-million Securing our Health System 2012-13 State Budget.

He added that the government would add a further $60-million in the 2013-14 State Budget.

“This funding targets replacement of the most at-risk medical equipment and infrastructure approaching its use-by-date that is essential for hospitals and health services to provide timely treatment to their patients,” he said.

“Most importantly, funding provided through this program supports our public hospitals to stay at the forefront of new technology and enables hospitals to replace big-ticket items without compromising on other healthcare outcomes.”

“I am also pleased our government has specifically provided a quarter of the program’s funding for regional and rural hospitals, so that, wherever we live, we have access to hospitals with modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.”

Sport uniform money

Eight Horsham district sporting clubs are sharing more than $325,000 in State Government funding through a Sporting Uniform Grants Program.

Victorian Sports Minister Hugh Delahunty said the clubs were among 337 across Victoria to receive a grant as part of the latest funding round.

“Most sporting competitions simply won’t allow you on the park without a proper uniform,” Mr Delahunty said.

“The Sporting Uniform Grants not only provides a boost for the club, but ensures more members of the community, whatever their skill level or background, get the chance to represent the club and join in the fun.

“More importantly, through the program

we’re removing a crucial barrier and increasing participation.

“As Minister for Sport and Recreation I want to see more people more active more often and these grants go a long way towards boosting team morale, connecting communities and can play an integral role in motivating people.

unners and walkers are again limbering up for annual Mother’s Day Classic events in Horsham and Ararat as the campaign to raise money for breastcancer research gains momentum.

The May 12 events at Sawyer Park in Horsham and Richardson Oval, Ararat, are part of the nation’s largest fun run and walk, involving more than 125,000 people across Australia.

Both events feature fourkilometre walks and eightkilometre runs, a Horsham registration and check-in between 8.15am and 9am before a ceremony and the Ararat registrations starting at 9am.

The Labor Party’s Parliamentary Secretary for Health Wade Noonan said latest Ambulance Victoria figures showed that ambulances responding to the most serious cases in regional Victoria were taking an average of up to half an hour to reach patients.

He said the documents released under freedom of information found from July 1 to December 31 last year that 38 of 149 rural branches met a 15-minute benchmark average for code-one first responses.

The figures show that while Ararat and Horsham branch response times were within the benchmark average, other Wimmera centres were outside the range.

“Just one in four branches in regional and rural Victoria achieved the state-wide benchmark for life-threatening call-outs in

he launch of the book ‘Willaura’s Finest’ at Anzac Day services at Willaura last week drew a large crowd to the Ararat district hamlet.

People with historic connections to the town made the trip to be part of the service and to hear Willaura and District Historical Society president John Walter launch the book.

Book author Trevor Munro and editor Graeme Hosken were guest speakers at a mid-morning service attended by almost 300 people.

Both spoke of the importance of understanding the lives and service of district soldiers, and of appreciating what they did in the name of their country.

Experiences Mr Hosken also spoke about the experiences of Australian soldiers during the time when peace was declared and their eventual discharge from the army and return to civilian life in Australia.

The book launch was part of a comprehensive service program, starting with a dawn ceremony led by Willaura RSL sub-branch member Mike McCartney-Lees at Willaura cenotaph.

can tell that the nights are rapidly getting colder because my cat has taken to sleeping on the end of my bed again.

Cats aren’t the only ones seeking warmth – there are lots of other critters that want to also come indoors.

It’s the time of year when householders, frustrated by unwanted visitors raiding their cupboards and barns, resort to laying baits for rats and mice. As a result, autumn is also the most common time of year for us to see cats and dogs affected by these poisons.

The effects of rat bait, or rodenticides, are slow in onset and might not show up for a few days. So it’s important that pet owners are aware of the symptoms and what to watch for.

Rodenticides act by interfering with the ability of the blood to clot, by preventing the production of new clotting factor proteins in the liver. This process takes around 48 hours, so usually the symptoms of poisoning don’t show up for two to five days after the toxin has been consumed.

Animals affected by these types of toxins have a much higher risk of excessive

bleeding than unaffected animals. The symptoms can range from mild bleeding, which might manifest as bruising of the skin and gums, or prolonged bleeding from small cuts or scrapes.

If the ingestion might have occurred a few days previously, a simple blood test can be performed to check the blood clotting time, and determine if the animal requires treatment.

Owners might also see blood in the urine or faeces. In some cases, however, severe internal bleeding can result in lethargic, collapsed animals in shock.

As with any poison, prevention is better than cure, and so if at all possible it’s best to avoid the use of rat bait in households where pets also live.

If an owner sees their animal eat rat bait, the best strategy is get them to the vet as soon as possible.

However, even non-pet owning homes may have furry trespassers in their yards at times, so if you must use baits, it’s vital to always make sure that these are put in locations accessible to rodents but not dogs or cats.

Make sure you take the packaging with you so that the vet can check the active ingredient. The vet will probably also recommend a course of Vitamin K tablets, this being an antidote to these types of poisons.

HOG riders’ gift to Scout group A

260-strong contingent of motorcycle riders who converged near Horsham for a Harley Owners Group Victorian rally at Easter has provided a much-needed boost to Horsham Scout groups.

Rally organiser and Horsham HOG branch vice-president Shane Rees presented a cheque for $1200 to the groups on Anzac Day at Sawyer Park.

Mr Rees said the money came from an airbrushed helmet, donated to the HOG rally

by Brisbane professional artist Daniel Farmer.

The helmet sold for $800 and HOG rally organisers contributed an extra $400.

“We chose to donate to Horsham Scouts because members of the group assisted us over two days and provided us with resources at the Wimmera Events Centre, where we were staying,” Mr Rees said.

“We hold the Victorian rally in Horsham every eight years and aim, as a not-for-profit group to support a local charity with any funds raised.”

The HOG rally also donated

a specialised airbed for patients with back injuries to Ambulance Victoria in a previous Horsham rally.

Second Horsham Scouts leader-in-charge Lance Warren said the group would use the money to allow all group members to participate in activities, such as the Cuboree – a Jamboree for Cubs – and the Scouts’ Jamboree.

The donation will also help fund volunteer-leader training.

Second Horsham Scouts will now have a monster raffle with prizes including a hybrid car and camper trailer.

ormer world champion track cyclist Shane Kelly, originally from Ararat, has joined a list of celebrities helping boost tourism across the state.

State Government ministers Hugh Delahunty and Louise Asher said Shane Kelly was part of a team of celebrities linking Tourism Victoria and Fairfax Media as part of a $300,000 intrastate campaign to boost statewide tourism.

Kelly won a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and was dubbed internationally as ‘Minute Man’ after breaking a world record in the grueling one-kilometre timetrial event.

Mr Delahunty said the ‘Spotted by Locals’ campaign would feature prominent Melbournians who had a personal connection to regional Victoria.

Annuity: An investment bought – usually at retirement with superannuation money – to provide regular income.

Asset: An investment product – it can be cash, shares, fixed interest or property.

Benefit: The amount of money saved in a retirement account which is accessible after meeting certain government imposed conditions such as retirement.

Choice of super: Your right to choose the superannuation fund you wish to put money in to.

Contribution: The money put into a superannuation fund by you or your employer.

Accolades for council

Northern Grampians Shire Council is celebrating wins in two categories at national local government awards.

The council won the Innovative Infrastructure Development award for its Stawell Steps project, and the Women in the Community award for flood-recovery activities involving women in Joel Joel community.

Mayor Cr Wayne Rice said the council was amazed and humbled to win two awards considering it was up against 192 entries from councils across Australia.

“It really is wonderful to be recognised at a national level as it reaffirms to us that our work is best practice and is deliver-

ing great outcomes for our residents and ratepayers,” Cr Rice said.

“And it’s a great result for a smaller regional council to win two awards at a national level as it demonstrates that small shires can punch above their weight and achieve fantastic things for their communities.”

The two national awards follow three other awards Northern Grampians Shire Council won for the Stawell Steps and the flood-recovery project.

The council’s two entries are now in the running to be named overall national winner to be judged in the near future and announced in June.

The Stawell Steps project involved developing flood-mitigation infrastructure at Cato Lake in Stawell into a functional and architectural community asset.

For the Joel Joel project the council’s Flood Recovery Team worked with the community’s women to help them obtain grants, host clean-up weekends and organise a concert with country music star Adam Brand.

Open access health forum West Wimmera Health Service staff will discuss health services for Goroke and district community at an Open Access Health Forum at Goroke Community Health Centre on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Severn wins Willaura the field turned for home.

eelong-based training partnership Bruce Elkington and Jamie Edwards tasted the spoils last Sunday at Ararat after winning the feature event the Murray Slattery Willaura Cup.

The duo from Sleepy Hollow saddled up their honest galloper Severn Road for the $17,500 2000-metre handicap. Promising apprentice jockey Josh Cartwright was in charge of steering duties and local bagmen had support for the combination taking bets at around $4 near start time.

Once the stalls flew open, the brown gelding was ridden quietly early with most of his more favoured rivals ahead of him. Young Cartwright didn’t panic, biding his time eventually sliding around the outside into a prominent position before

The maiden plate over 1100 metres saw Yendall position his mount on the pace shortly after the start and maintain that position throughout the scamper, enjoying a charmed run. Ardroy looked to have a liking to the unusually firm surface and when asked the question by his Horsham hoop accelerated strongly in the straight.

The son of King Of Roses was too slick for his tiring eleven competitors winning by almost 1 length.

This win sees Yendall edge ever closer to winning his second National Jockey Premiership title with Queensland jockey Michael Cahill currently leading on 120 wins, and Yendall breathing down his neck on 119.

The battle for the premiership will continue to be fought out between Yendall, Michael Cahill and Brad Rawiller with a winner crowned on August 1. Yendall is out to reclaim the National Title he won almost two years ago.

alkee should continue its winning way against Harrow-Balmoral in Horsham District Football League this week but don’t expect the margin to be anything like their last three games.

Kalkee appears to have been in cruise mode but will be made to work a lot harder against the Roos who have found good form after a sloppy start to the year.

The big issue confronting the Roos is how to limit the potent Kalkee forward line. Josh Beddison has been in scintillating form and only poor kicking stopped him from breaking a club record last week. Evergreen Adam Carter makes things look easy and Steve Schultz has been a forward option in recent weeks. It means Nathan Neumann, Ryan McClure and Daniel Rogers will need plenty of things going right to limit the damage on the scoreboard.

Harrow -Balmoral’s midfield of Brent Forsyth, Tim Cogger and Dalton Burns will present a tougher option than the Kees have faced in recent weeks and Paul Christian, Tim Wade and Simon Hobbs will need to pay this trio plenty of attention around the stoppages.

One clash worth watching will be in the ruck. Josh Vickery has returned to his best form while Kalkee’s youngster Jake Hobbs has been winning plenty of the ball and giving his onballers an armchair ride in recent

weeks. If Hobbs continues with his rich vein of form the Roos’ undersized defence will be under plenty of pressure and feel the pain on the scoreboard.

Rams’ run Games don’t get much bigger for Natimuk than when it hosts Swifts this week. The Rams were admirable in their eight-point loss last week while their opponents notched their first win last week and need to continue on if they are going to get back into finals calculations. Clashes abound around the middle of the ground and the winner of these will determine the outcome of the game.

Todd Stevenson, Ash Pekin and Shaun McDonald have been leading the charge for the Rams but they will need to be at the top of their games to stifle Paul Hanns, Scott Carey and Sean Mantell.

Natimuk will be hoping coach Dylan Wright pulls on the blue and gold jumper this week for the first time and to have an immediate impact on his confidence-charged team-mates.

It will be interesting to see if the

Baggies rush Jeremy Joiner back into the key forward post. The big forward kicked four goals in the early game last week and his presence in the square in the main game will present the Baggies with a potential match-deciding target.

Natimuk has shared goals with Jamie Elliott, Tim Friend and Damien Kilpatrick getting the job done. If they are going to be legitimate finals contenders the Rams need to make it four wins from five starts this season.

Huge game Noradjuha-Quantong has a massive game when it takes on Laharum this week. The Bombers are coming off two losses and face a Demon outfit that will be looking to avoid a second straight defeat after falling to the premiership favourites last week.

Like many other sides that face the Demons the dilemma at the Bombers’ selection table will be trying to find enough height to cover the height of Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla.

Lachie Wilson and Nathan Hill will be praying for a wet day to get the leather pill on the ground and away

from the twin towers.

At the other end of the oval the Bombers will be hoping to regain key forwards to take the pressure of Shane Oakley and Adam Hall. The loss of Jordan Huff to a hamstring injury and Brady King to volleyball commitments has upset momentum.

Brent McIntyre, Matt Ward and Rohan Adams will give the Bombers plenty of grunt around the stoppages but questions might be asked of their leg speed. When the ball gets out into space young Laharum runners in Robbie Miller, Sam Winfield, Daniel Easson and Zac Price will assume control as the Demons scoot away to another victory.

Similar to a final After this week there will be one winless side left in the league barring a draw and the Pimpinio and Taylors Lake sides will treat their game like a grand final.

It might be the younger Tiger legs that get to celebrate this week for the first time. The experienced Alex Hill, Ryan Ellis, Simon Risson and Cam Ellis will give great guidance to the young Tigers when the pressure is on and make sure they have plenty of opportunities to kick a winning score.

The Lakers have been decimated by injuries to key players and they desperately need Dean Harberger back in the side to provide run and carry off half back or through the midfield.

If the Lakers are going to be in the contest they need James Dixon to get first hands on the ball and then hope big-bodied Aaron Lewis and Jason Weir can crash packs and push the ball the Lakers way.

Both sides have struggled for goal

kickers. Sam Turmine found form last week and with the veteran Rocky Ellis the Tigers have a couple of avenues to goal while the Lakers will be looking to Nathan Koening, Marc Davey and Brent Tough to weave some magic.

On the board Rupanyup bounced back last week to get a much-needed win but they face the ultimate test this week when they travel to the south-west to meet red-hot Edenhope-Apsley.

Rupanyup has finally found firepower up forward in the Tyler brothers, the duo slotting 10 goals between them last week. But they might find supply isn’t as frequent this week with Chris Oliver, Jeremy Kealy and Tim Carter leading a miserly Saints defensive outfit.

Edenhope-Apsley would have been quietly satisfied with win last week without James Dixon appearing in the best players list. Dixon rarely plays two bad games in a row so it might be a case of watch-out Rupanyup.

The battle between Dave McLeish and Nathan Sasche will be a beauty and have a huge bearing on the outcome but the depth of Edenhope Apsley will sorely test the Panthers outfit.

By MICK SHANNON Two teams remain undefeated in Mallee Football League and will face off this week in what will be the biggest game of the year thus far.

Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers and Beulah will lock horns at Sea Lake in what should be an exceptional game.

The Tigers easily accounted for Jeparit-Rainbow last week by 88 points while the Blues had a tough 25-point win against WoomelangLascelles. Ouyen United also proved too strong for Hopetoun, winning by 55 points.

A big crowd is expected at Sea Lake as the Tigers welcome the Blues in a top-of-the-table clash.

Both teams recruited extremely well over the pre-season and will be out to make a name for themselves as the best team in the competition.

Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers have a potent midfield that consists of Bill Barry, Colin Durie, Darcy Ryan and Joel Lloyd. All players have been in good form so far this season and will be up for the big test against a skilful Beulah centre group.

The Blues have a number of players who can run through the midfield with Micah Buchanan, Callum Buchanan, Tyler Lehmann, Andrew Hughes as well as coach Tom Hallam who will play his first game this week.

This makes for a mouth-watering clash that will give fans of both teams something to cheer about.

Up the other end of the ground Luke Spasic and Kim Hallam will hold down the key defensive posts as the Blues will look to use their quick ball play to overrun the Tigers.

Young players Simon Clugston and Nathan Cocks have had great starts to the year and will need to continue this if Jeparit-Rainbow is going to be any chance of beating the Demons.

The Eagles also have strength across the lines and enviable balance but the Saints will be marginally better at home.

Competition developments this year are more about how other clubs have picked up the gauntlet that Horsham so profoundly threw to the ground.

Dimboola’s victory over Horsham last week, which followed Warrack Eagles’ success in the first round, reflected a significant desire for challengers to step up to the plate – just as many of us feared the competition was losing its mojo.

The great revelation from the results has been a perception that the unbeatable are suddenly beatable. It’s hard to gauge how valuable it will be in the season wash-up in August.

But make no mistake, Horsham remains a strong and talented unit and being put on the ropes early will only act as a spur for Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan’s men.

The leadership transition at Horsham was always going to have a settling period and a look down the club’s best-player lists suggest Stawell might seriously cop it this weekend.

With the dashing Tyler Blake in form, Nic Pekin winning the football, Garrett Liston making an immediate impression on his return, Rhona Conboy likely to only get better and Dylan Parish back in the fold, the Demons’ list continues to sparkle.

Stawell has also had an inglorious start to the season, losing its first two games and was probably too much off the pace against Ararat last week for its brains trust’s liking.

Andrew Cameron kicked five goals and David Morris and Zac Cameron won accolades but the Warriors will find it tough against the Demons who will win comfortably.

Challengers One of the great aspects of the emergence of competition challengers is refreshing speculation about how consistent the clubs will be in performances this year.

A contest between Horsham Saints and Warrack Eagles at Coughlin Park in Horsham on Saturday will test the consistency of both camps.

The Saints will have a couple of days of recovery time up their sleeve after beating Horsham RSL in a slick and entertaining Anzac Day clash.

The Saints are probably as quick across the lines as they have been in the last five years and have an enviable balance that allows coach Brendan Broadbent to be versatile in his approach.

With Mick Rowe playing an influential aerial role and as Nathan Clough confronting opponents in the clinches, this allows the likes of Heath Kelm, Phil Butsch and Addison Milner to be damaging and opens the door for Gavin Kelm to bob up when needed. There a many strings to the Saints bow this year.

Will Oakley has been impressive and others such as Ricky Lleyonhjelm, Nathan Merrett and cool-headed Simon Brearley were good against the Eagles.

Dimboola will need to be careful if the Tigers smell any blood at home.

Dimboola will sneak across the line.

Scott Arnold’s Minyip-Murtoa crew returns to the action after a bye and can expect a tough game against Ararat at Murtoa.

The Burras came off second best against the Saints first round and will be on the rebound, hoping John Delahunty, Blake Young and Adam Gerdtz can continue early form and Brayden Ison can continue kicking goals.

The impact of Clinton Midgley remains a key for the Burras.

Ararat unveiled what it has to offer this season with a comprehensive win over Stawell and fans would have been happy with how the Rats finished the game.

Importantly, Ararat had multiple goal-kickers, Zac Louder bagging five and Aaron Searle four last week as others such as Jack Ganley, Nic Maddison, Liam Cavanagh and Harry Ganley impressed.

Minyip-Murtoa however won’t allow the Rats the luxury of a slow start. The Burras should win a fascinating contest.

Teams getting back on track ahead of grand final replay MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Round four in Mininera District Football League features a replay of the 2012 grand final. However circumstances are somewhat different this time round as neither team has had a start to the season they would have hoped for.

Penshurst is coming off its second loss and Tatyoon remains winless

after the first three rounds.

The latest of Tatyoon’s losses came at the hands of Moyston-Willaura to the tune of 14 points.

Sean McDougall has been a shining light for Tatyoon in an otherwise disappointing start to the season, being in the best in all three games. With Aidan Bell finding form with four goals on the weekend, Tatyoon will be hoping its first win is on the cards.

Penshurst will have a different idea, looking for a win itself after coming off a 34-point loss to GlenthompsonDunkeld.

and Rory Neeson were the better players for Penshurst last week with all three also contributing with goals.

Penshurst will be hoping to this week find some form and start their climb up the ladder.

This season’s big improvers Great Western will travel to Mininera to play the SMW Rovers.

Both the Bulldogs and Lions have had two wins apiece. SMW Rovers most recently had an eight-goal win over Woorndoo-Mortlake in a scrappy game down at tiger land.

forward and Brad Scott down back provided plenty of support in the victory. Youngsters Tom Thewlis, Matt Mulcahy and Tyler Mason also had strong performances, showing they are more than capable senior footballers.

Great Western will be looking to continue its roll after last week’s win over Ararat.

Great Western came out 53-point victors, however had it kicked straight in front of goals it could have really blown out the margin.

Benjamin Birch-Burton, Nathan Shalders and Brett Dowie all con-

tributed for the Lions, kicking three goals each.

In other games, Lismore-Derrinallum coming off a win over Caramut will travel to Ararat , the undefeated Wickliffe-Lake Bolac will have an easy day they hosting WoorndooMortlake, and top-of-the-table Glenthompson-Dunkeld travel to Caramut.

One of the closest matches of the round will be between HawkesdaleMacarthur and Moyston-Willaura.

Both have lost only one game and will be fighting for that edge to move up into third spot.

Car buyers get caught in the net A

lmost three quarters of new and used car buyers in Australia use online media as part of their researching process, according to the latest survey results released by Nielsen.

Nielsen’s ‘Australian Automotive Report’ also highlights the increasing importance of smartphones, with almost 30 percent of new car buyers using their mobile phone to access the internet in relation to their car purchase decision.

Based on an online survey of more than 1000 Australian car buyers and ‘intenders’ aged 18 or over, which was conducted during December last year, the study found 73 percent of respondents – for both new and used car purchases – turned to internet sites or online applications for assistance.

Among new car buyers, this compared to 35 percent using TV resources, 55 percent relying on word of mouth and 61 percent referring to print publications, while 76 percent also visited dealerships as part of the decision-making process.

While online resources were relied upon equally by new and used car buyers, those in the market for a used car typically relied less on other forms of information, such as TV – 21 percent, print – 51 percent,

“These findings signal a real interest in peer reviews and feedback from like-minded consumers,” Ms Ingrey said.

“They also highlight the continued opportunities for brands to utilise social platforms and spaces as a means of connecting with, and communicating with, customers.”

“The opportunities held by online media to build awareness, engage potential vehicle purchasers, fulfil their information needs and move car buyers through their decision-making process are abundant,” she said.

Tablet usage has also climbed from five percent in 2011 to 26 percent in 2012, reflecting the increasing ownership of this form of mobile technology across Australia.

Ms Ingrey said that television remained an important source for new car buyers, particularly with the uptake of ‘smart’ TVs in Australian households.

“Internet connected TVs have the potential to be used as a shared online device for group viewing and browsing in the living room,” she said.

“This new connected screen – once

penetration increases – holds opportunities for marketers and content providers to support ‘family’ or group experiences to move car buyers through their decision-making process, particularly as many car purchase decisions are made with the recommendation and input of friends and family.”

For those visiting sites or apps, the vast majority of new-car buyers – 72 percent – turned to car-makers’ websites, while 25 percent of both new-car and used-car buyers said they used social media as part of the process.

The study also found that among new car buyers who have engaged with organisations on social platforms, 28 percent have engaged with a car brand – up from 18 percent in

“It’s clear that consumers are now seeking ever more information, and their media consumption is mirroring this trend.”

Four cars in one T

oyota has teamed up with European industrial designer Jean-Marie Massaud to create a minimalist concept car that is versatile enough to serve as four vehicles in one.

The Mini-esque ME.WE, unveiled at Toyota’s Paris showroom on the famous Champs-Eleysees as part of a city-wide design exhibition, can be configured as a city car, off-roader, ute and convertible.

It was conceived as a response to ‘ecological threats posed by mass production and the growth of the global car fleet’.

The name is a reference to individual freedom – me – and responsibility towards society – we.

Toyota says the concept’s goal was to ‘better accommodate the automotive needs of people by eliminating excess in a package that reconciles driving pleasure with environmental responsibility’.

Ford has resurrected the famous Escort nameplate after more than a decade in the wilderness – but it won’t return to Australia.
