Telethon for centre

A

seven-hour radio telethon on radio station MIXX FM next month will aim to help fundraisers generate $1-million needed in community pledges to build Horsham’s new Wimmera Cancer Centre.

ACE Radio Broadcasters’ Horsham station has committed radio air time from 9am to 4pm on August 14 for the telethon as part of a Rachael’s Wish fundraising appeal. Station representative and The Weekly Advertiser managing editor Dean Lawson con-

firmed telethon plans at an appeal launch at Wimmera Base Hospital on Monday night. He said the telethon broadcast would replace usual Friday programming as part of the ACE network’s dedicated commitment to support worthwhile community projects. During the telethon, people will be able to call the Horsham station with pledges for the $3-million project which will combine oncology, dialysis and community palliative care services in one purposebuilt facility. The telethon will feature

guest speakers, music dedications, celebrities and a variety of fun activities. Horsham station manager Scott Grambau said it was important that businesses and individuals supported the Wimmera Cancer Centre project. “The ACE network, through its radio stations 3WM and MIXX and The Weekly Advertiser, is extremely conscious of the need for community services in the region. We’re more than happy to lend a hand to try to raise as much money as possible,” he said. The Federal Government has

already pledged $1-million for the centre and fundraisers have so far tallied $256,658 in community donations.

Rachael’s Wish

The appeal is named after Murtoa College teacher and cancer survivor Rachael Littore who spoke at the launch of her experiences and the need for a new centre. Ms Littore, who underwent treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2013, encouraged people to contribute to the appeal. “Each of us has the potential to make a positive difference to

the lives of others by contributing to building a new treatment facility for this hospital,” she said. “This hospital helped me, and unfortunately the odds are that someone close to you will need its help in the future. I encourage everyone to think about what they can do to contribute. Actions of individuals can be really powerful, especially if we can all unite to achieve a common goal. “One dollar at a time, I urge the entire community to make this wish, my wish, and the wish of so many others, take

shape. It will benefit our local hospital, our town and our district. “I’m not an extraordinary person. My story isn’t overly special. I was in an unfortunate situation, but was surrounded by enough love, support and medicine to get better. “This hospital made a huge difference to me and it is my wish that others in a similar position to me and especially those who are in one far worse, can be surrounded by their loved ones, and not have to be removed from their local community to get better.”
