ajor events in the Wimmera this weekend are set to galvanise latest findings about the value and impact of recreational water in the region.
A high-profile barefoot water-ski extravaganza on the Wimmera River at Dimboola and Victorian sailing championships at Green Lake, south-east of Horsham, are the latest water-based attractions on the region’s events schedule. Dimboola Boat and Water Ski Club, in partnership with Barefoot Waterski Australia, will present a tournament and night jump on the river

at Dimboola Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Meanwhile, Horsham Yacht Club will present the annual OK Dinghy Victorian Inland Championship Regatta on Saturday and Sunday. The sporting attractions come hot on the heels of revelations that people, in clocking up hundreds of thousands of visits to various waterways across the Wimmera and southern Mallee, are pumping more than $27-million into the regional economy every year. Details have emerged about the value of water beyond simple supply in the region, in a Wimmera Southern Mallee Socio Economic Value of Recreation and Environmental Water
2017 study. Wimmera Development Association, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, GWMWater and Buloke, Hindmarsh, Horsham, Northern Grampians, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack councils were project partners in the study.
Barefoot skiing
Dimboola will provide a unique stage and environment on Saturday for what shapes as one of the biggest barefoot waterski tournaments in Australia. The tournament will feature classes across various age groups and levels and finish with some of the best exponents of the sport. A major highlight of the event will
be a night jump where water-skiers, including some of the best in Australia, will leap up to and perhaps beyond 26 metres from ramps. Dimboola club spokesman Darren Bone said the night jump would be a major highlight. “We’ll turn on the lights when it gets dark and you’ll see these guys go over the jumps and probably top out about 26 metres – 28 metres is the world record and some of these blokes will go 26-plus. “We have two of the best in Australia coming and numerous other blokes who are just as good.” Mr Bone said the event was in memory of influential barefoot water-skier
Peter Taylor who died in April this year after a fight with cancer. People attending Saturday’s event can make a gold coin donation to Wimmera Against Cancer in Kids, WACK. Mr Bone said spectators would be treated to skills of Australian barefoot-ski master Keenan Derry in the afternoon. “He virtually walks on water and if you want to see something special come and watch him,” he said. Mr Bone said the Dimboola barefoot course rated as one of the best in Australia and organisations such as Barefoot SA, Victorian Barefoot Club and others were behind the event. Continued page 3
