immera people will again have an opportunity to soak up the talents of Natimuk animator Dave Jones on Friday night in a major highlight of this year’s Art Is… Of Our Land festival.

• Over 25 years experience in computers • Locally owned and operated franchise

Jones, who has wowed Art Is… festival patrons and captured international attention with his extravagant and large-scale art works, will transform Horsham’s iconic Masonic Hall with the launch of Stories Of Our Land. The hall’s bold white façade, complete with imposing columns, will provide the backdrop to projections that Jones has created with community workshops across the region. The launch of Stories of Our Land, which will include musicians from 8Foot Felix providing a live improvised soundtrack, will be from 6pm to 7.30pm. During the long weekend the project will play on a continuous loop each night after dark from 7pm to 10pm. The launch will also include other activities such as announcement of photographic competition winners and performances from Wimmera Community Choir and BeAT. Art Is… festival activities have been in full swing since Saturday and have already included a night with comedian Peter Hellier, a family fun day at Sawyer Park, performances from a broad range from musical acts in Horsham and Natimuk and the launch of a variety of art exhibitions and activities across the region. It is continuing to gather mo-

mentum as it embraces the broad spectrum of art including performance and film, music, visual art, literature and forums, markets and workshops. Wesley Performing Arts Centre is providing a platform for many artistic performances and continues this morning with Asking for Trouble theatre company’s Bubblewrap and Boxes show. The acts continue into the evening with popular folkblues group the Audreys set to cap off the day from 8pm. The diversity of artistic performance continues at the centre tomorrow with a presentation of the Richard Frankland play The Brady Bunch, which revolves around an Indigenous family. Artistic offerings are far from restricted to the Wesley centre with Ben Grant’s musical play The Shrink and Swell of Knots at Soldiers Memorial

Horsham’s Commercial Hotel has also been humming with artistic acts and on Friday night musical ensemble 8Foot Felix provide entertainment for music and dinner night. The festival is also offering a huge visual art experience for the people, with exhibitions at various galleries.

Attractions The attractions extend this weekend into flood and flavours with events and demonstrations at Laharum Olive Grove. The festival’s Charee Bolwell said the ‘of our land’ theme fitted neatly into region’s cultural landscape. “The link between art and our landscape really resonates in so many different ways,” she said. “The move from a March to winter event to include the

long weekend has also provided the community with an opportunity to experience and get involved with some great attractions.” She said the festival represented ‘an enormous’ amount of work and planning and offered something for everyone. “The volunteer effort has been outstanding and we’ve been very pleased to have been able to work with Wimmera Volunteers,” she said. This year’s ‘of our land’ festival is part of the regional art community’s three-year exploration of the Wimmera landscape. In 2011 it adopted the theme ‘under our skies’ and last year celebrated ‘by the water’s edge’. The 10-day festival, designed to engage rural and isolated communities in highquality art experiences and creation, started last Saturday and continues until Sunday.

Rates debate for YOUR HEATING Solution council hopefuls Wood Heaters

V

ictorian Farmers Federation Lake Bolac branch has invited Ararat Rural City Council by-election candidates to a public meeting at Mininera next Wednesday.

Branch members, frustrated over a long-running rates debate with the council, are keen to hear what the candidates can offer. Branch secretary Rob Nichols said the meeting, which would include question and answer opportunities for each candidate, was about establishing a connection between rural ratepayers and prospective councilors. “We know a bit about some of the candidates but not much about some of the others so

we’re keen to give them a chance to tell us more about themselves,” he said. The Ararat council has seven nominations for the position left vacant by Cr Murray Woods who resigned in March due to ill health.

Thomas Atkinson, Lisa Jobling, Paul Hopper, John Box, Robert McAlpine, Michael Russell and Frank Deutsch have nominated for the position. Ararat ratepayers will decide in a postal vote on June 22 who will fill the position. Voting information was being posted out from yesterday. The number of candidates nominating for the position has taken the Ararat council by surprise. In Local Govern-

ment Elections last year the council received seven nominations for seven vacancies which means all were elected unopposed.

Mr Nichols said VFF members were keen to provide candidates with a last-minute opportunity to have their say in front of a group of voting ratepayers. “We know it’s short notice but we don’t have much time,” he said. “Obviously we are in a rural community but the meeting is not restricted to farmers. It’s open to anyone. We just want to know more about the candidates.” The meeting will be at Mininera Recreation Clubrooms at 7.30pm.

Advertisement Commercial and Farm Debt. Small business confidence across Australia could receive a significant boost if the same rules for farm and commercial debt mediation were agreed and legislated by all States and Territories Commercial debt mediation legislation, similar to farm debt mediation which already exists in Victoria and NSW would give added teeth to the Australian Bankers Association revised Code of Banking Practice which was launched on 31 January 2013. The code is contractually binding on subscribing retail banks and the 2013 version of the code is set to start on 1 February 2014. WINNERS: Trish Haby from Café 22 in Horsham Plaza draws the first two winning entries from the Horsham Plaza Great Car Giveaway. Trish plucked the names of Jason Mellings of Donald and Peter Van Duren of Rye from the $15,990 Mazda 2 that is up for grabs. They are the first of 12 finalists in the competition. Horsham Plaza manager Allison Roberts said entries for the competition had been overwhelming. “I ordered 20,000 entry coupons to cover the six weeks of the competition but 4000 were gone in the first four days. I’ve had to order another print run,” she said. The competition is open to anyone who spends at least $20 from any plaza store before 4pm, July 5. Picture: JAMES FIDLER

The code is the banking industry’s customer charter and sets out standards of good banking practice that signatories must follow when dealing with individual small business or prospective customers and their guarantors. While the commitment of the banking industry to establish its own standards is laudable and contains a number of provisions which provide customers with rights and protections, legislative support would ensure all finance providers had to comply. Many businesses have assets across State and Territory borders and in times of financial stress, this can cause enormous grief when trying to achieve the best outcome, cost excessively in bank charges and penalty rates, and provide little incentive for entrepreneurs to have another go in the future. Dismantling a perfectly good enterprise because it is burdened with excessive debt without proper mediation can have a detrimental impact, particularly on small regional communities where that business might be the major employer.

If a major employer closes, the town could cease to exist, the schools close because there are not enough kids and councils suffer because the rate base evaporates. Under the ABA’s new Code of Banking Practice, there are provisions for customers in financial hardship and customers in remote Indigenous communities. There is a notice requirement for materially adverse changes to the terms and conditions of a small business and there are enhanced debt collection and account combination provisions. But what really needs to happen is for all governments to work with all banks and finance providers and get some solid foundations laid down to ensure a proper farm debt and commercial debt mediation standard is eventually adopted across the nation to ensure small businesses are not cut off at the knees before reaching their full potential. -

Respect is what counts

EDITORIAL By DEAN LAWSON

O

ne of the great challenges of Australian society has always been establishing clearly defined core values and social and cultural boundaries and benchmarks.

the spirit of a ‘fair go’ or is it something else that is more complicated? Considering the racial saga in the AFL during the last few weeks some of us suspect the latter. What this debate is telling us, yet again, is that we are a melting pot of different people, with different experiences and backgrounds, which faces a daily need to simply ‘get on’.

Ask what it means to be Australian and many of us will struggle to provide a profound answer while others, governed by personal circumstance, will have a clearly defined response.

The fact that we allow ‘race’ to interfere with our evolution as a people reflects a combination of ignorance, unease and cultural cringe.

Is it about simply living in a free democracy that promotes

entage. He explained that having a collective laugh at each other’s expense was a great way to diffuse issues of difference and that it all came back to intent.

An Australian-born man with Sudanese heritage provided insight into this complication when he phoned commercial radio this week with his thoughts.

Yet, that is a different message from what we’ve been hearing from some quarters in this latest racism debate.

He said while he abhorred racism he as an Australian loved how he and his mates, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, could poke fun at each other using extreme derogatory comments based on everything from race to par-

It might be that instead of concentrating on the polarising aspects of racial rights and wrongs, which include unhelpful patronisation, that we use this all-embracing word as a lantern to guide the way on our journey as Australians.

The word ‘respect’ comes up a lot in the sea of discussion.

SIR,- David Hucker, The Weekly Advertiser May 23, should be reminded that he lives in ‘Australia Felix, on the best agricultural land in the country, where cropping and grazing are now multimillion dollar industries. In objecting to paying little more than half the general rate, he also needs to be reminded that most farmer-graziers inherit their farms. Towns-people, on the other hand, buy their own homes and neither the interest on their mortgages, nor their rates, are tax-deductible. David Hucker should also be reminded that while he may not use all the services provided by Ararat Rural City Council, nobody does, and provision of a safe road to the front door of most farms is often the single most expensive item of the council budget. I note that provision of an outdoor swimming pool for Ararat kids is simply not on the horizon, which I think is an absolute disgrace. But choices have to be made and the council has made some hard choices, given the perpetually limited-inadequate

It is a tenet of our civilised society that those who are able to pay should do so, and not try to shirk their responsibilities. Cor Lenghaus, Armstrong

Target Country SIR,- The announcement of Target’s intention to close its Warracknabeal Target Country store has caused great concern to the hundreds of community members involved directly with our health service. Rural Northwest Health employs over 200 staff members who all shop locally including the Target Country Warracknabeal store. The talk in the staff room since the announcement has been focussed solely on what we all believe will be a catastrophic blow to our town. This decision does not only impact our staff members but we have around 60 residents who constantly require new clothing or sleepwear. Staff members regularly pop down to the store to purchase items for them because many of the residents don’t have family members to perform such tasks.

End for channels with project in final stages

$15.8-million project to decommission channels replaced by the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline is entering its final stages.

GWMWater confirmed this week that it had removed about 1400 kilometres of ‘large’ channels from the previous water-distribution system since the project started in June, 2009. It has removed 2900 structures, turned 25,000 tonnes of concrete into 18,000 tonnes of crushed rock and recycled 180 tonnes of steel reinforcement. It has also recycled 120 tonnes of plastic channel liner which Community Axis Enterprises has processed for export overseas. GMWater managing director Mark Williams said the crushed concrete had been used for a variety of applications such as road surfacing

The essence of giving

“Do we only give because we want an ego boost from knowing we ‘did good’, or only when we get tangible proof that our gift will be put to ‘proper’ use? The beauty of unconditional kindness is that we may NEVER know.” – Chelle Thompson, Editor of Inspiration Line

T

his happened a long time ago, in the first year of my living in Australia, but it is an incident that has marked me forever. Like most migrants, I had come a long way with fast food within just a few months of entering the country. Having readily fallen under the thrall of the golden arches, I had already made the transition from ‘I don’t eat beef’ to ‘but I eat cheeseburgers’ by the end of my first year. One evening, after a long day at work, I had ordered a couple of burgers at McDonald’s and had sat down to eat when I caught a whiff of something unpleasant. Unwashed body odour wafted near me and to my discomfort I found the owner taking his seat beside my table. A homeless man, seemingly old and covered in layers of grime eyed the extra burger on my plate. I saw him lean towards me and before he opened his mouth, I handed over the burger and made haste to leave the place. There was nothing altruistic or commendable about my action; my charity was compelled – out of duress, to extricate myself from an unpleasant situation. A few minutes later at the bus stop outside, I was accosted by the same stench and to my dismay found the man near me again. Despite my blatant attempts to ignore him, he held out something to me, pressed it into my unresponsive hands,

mumbled something and disappeared.

I understood who had truly given.

I still remember the searing shame that scorched my cheeks for being singled out in the crowd. I hesitated to look at nearby passengers, appalled by the amusing glances I imagined I was getting for being accosted by a smelly, dirty and perhaps senile stranger.

We all practice giving within our own circle of friends and family. Most of us delude ourselves that it is selfless and unconditional giving, especially what we practice within the boundaries of our relationships and roles.

I was young and immature trying to settle in a new country without much support and making my own survival rules. I had to yet become comfortable in my skin. I usually tried to blend into the background and avoided looking people into their eyes for fear of unwanted provocation. My primary concern was self-preservation, resulting in disassociating myself from anything or anyone who might discredit me in my attempts to belong. My reaction was perhaps justified yet knew undeniably that I had failed my moral compass test that day.

Gift Later when I looked at what the old man had thrust into my hands, I noticed it was a sticker, a strikingly clean and grime-free picture of a blue dolphin – perhaps one of his few possessions. Yet the essence of giving was totally lost on me on that day.

Hopetoun ready for health reunion An atrium featuring a nursery display and photographs of babies born at Hopetoun Bush Nursing Hospital will be a highlight of a reunion this weekend. More than 100 guests have booked for a dinner at Hopetoun Memorial Hall on Saturday. The Hopetoun community is celebrating 70 years of public health services.

But in reality we pander to our own selfinterests; a conditioned response in the arena of human relationships. The kind of giving that leaves me humbled and amazed is at the opposite side of the spectrum – the giving practiced by volunteers. It requires a different kind of strength to give to totally unrelated people, to give while making oneself vulnerable, to give in the face of rebuffs, rejections and denials and above all to give without expectations of material benefits or accolades.

Volunteers

CARDBOARD WE HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU COMMERCIAL PICK UP SERVICE

At recent Volunteering Western Victoria recognition awards I couldn’t help but be moved by the diligent and tireless efforts of giving practiced by groups and individuals within the region. It is staggering to see how much the world relies on volunteering and on such noble and benevolent acts of giving.

Over the years, I have been reminded of the incident with various emotions gnawing at me – shame, guilt and even remorse at my pettiness, my concern over outwardly appearances and my shabby treatment of the old man.

Having said that, not all volunteering efforts are visible or even recognised; at times some labours can end up being unappreciated and unacknowledged, as the old man’s gift. But that doesn’t stop people from continuing to give.

However, life being the greatest teacher, has on several instances, taught me what it is to be in the old man’s shoes and experience the pain of having a gift wasted on unresponsive, disdainful and even undeserving recipients. It was on such occasions that I understood the significance of the old man’s paltry token of gratitude. Of the two who had practiced giving that day,

It is that essence of giving that the old man taught me to respect and revere albeit belatedly; life’s lessons do come from the oddest teachers at times.

BALE STANDS

There is no doubt a cost that most volunteers pay in the face of such demanding selfless and altruistic behaviour, but fortunately for society, that fails to dissuade or discourage them.

he first week of winter is here, and it has already made itself felt at Animal Aid with shorter days and frosty mornings. It has also brought a change in the proportion of animals staying with us in the shelter, as kitten season finally winds towards its conclusion for another year, giving our cattery staff and volunteers a chance to lavish some extra attention on our older feline friends. At home, it is very tempting to hunker down inside with a warm fire and enjoy a quieter life. It’s important to remember, however, that as pet owners our responsibility towards our animals is a year-round commitment. There are several factors to consider to ensure our pets see out the winter as safely and as comfortably as we do. The colder conditions are an obvious problem, which means our pets might need some extra protection from the weather. Despite their fur coats, animals can still get cold under difficult conditions, particularly when they are wet or exposed to strong wind. Young, elderly and small or thin animals will find it particularly hard to stay warm - this particularly includes critters such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds in cages or aviaries. Any animal expected to spend time out-

KEEP WARM: Puppies, like all pets, need attention during winter. Picture: DEAN LAWSON

side, therefore, needs adequate protection from the weather, including shelter from rain and wind. Cats are particularly good at looking after their own comfort and many will voluntarily choose not to spend as much time outside over winter months. However, for those that do, it is quite important that owners have them indoors by the time it is dark, not only to protect their safety, but also to comply with cat curfews which are in place in many local areas. This means bringing them in much earlier than you would normally. When the evenings are dark and the weather miserable it can be difficult to get the motivation to go outside. Unfortunately we find that many dogs – probably much like their owners – tend to put on weight over winter. I am sure that in many cases this is due to the inclement conditions for walking. Most dogs won’t thank you for skipping their exercise, however – they would pre-

fer to go out for some fun, regardless of how cold it is. If they get muddy don’t be too quick to bath them as this can strip the natural oils from their skin. Instead, a rough towel dry and a good brush once any mud has dried should do the trick. It’s a common misconception that we don’t need to worry about fleas in winter. It’s certainly true that fleas require warmer temperatures to breed, but with most animals spending at least some time indoors, and most houses these days having central heating, flea infestations can occur in the home at any time of year. Hence it is just as important to carry on with a flea-prevention program in winter. Winter can be a great season to spend some quality time with our pets, and a little extra care and TLC will mean that it’s a safe and happy season for them too. • Dr Vogt is senior veterinarian at Animal Aid in Melbourne. Ararat office to stay open Eight State Government primary industry employees will continue to work from an Ararat office as part of a departmental merger. Their roles will now focus on ‘jobs and investment, increasing food and fibre production, delivering more streamlined regulation, and building and maintaining healthy, natural environments.’ The Ararat office had been earmarked for closure as part of the former Department of Primary Industries. But the executive team in charge of a new Department of Environment and Primary Industries has decided to retain the Ararat office. Department secretary Adam Fennessy confirmed that the decision followed the merger of Primary Industries and the Sustainability and Environment departments. “Last year the former Department of Primary Industries undertook a site consolidation program designed to improve service delivery, reduce overheads and enhance professional development by grouping staff together at larger offices,” Mr Fennessy said. “At the time it was decided there were a number of advantages to relocating staff at DPI’s Ararat site to larger offices in western and central Victoria. “However with the creation of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, the department has reviewed that decision in light of its broader scope, increased scale and the need to make decisions at a local level. “Retaining the Ararat office is in the best interests of food and fibre producers in the region and will help provide a better and more efficient management approach across public and private land.”

New roles New DEPI regional services deputy secretary Bernie O’Sullivan added that retaining the Ararat office reflected was business needs and service delivery based on the new roles and new functions of the department. “Keeping DEPI staff at Ararat provides the opportunity to develop a ‘one-stop shop’ for this district for shared areas of interest in private and public land,” he said. “It will also bring additional scale to DEPI’s emergency management efforts as we move to an expanded approach focusing on fire and biosecurity risks.” Mr O’Sullivan said former DPI staff at former DSE-managed offices at Bairnsdale, Broadford, Swifts Creek and Traralgon would also remain at the respective sites.

Record entry for Legacy contest A record entry of 15 students from five Wimmera secondary colleges will compete for a Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award on Friday. A Legacy sub-committee of Lyn Heard, Phil Nicks and John Hoffmann has been working with the competitors who will present their addresses at Legacy

House in Horsham from 10.30am. Horsham, St Brigid’s, Murtoa, Kaniva and Nhill secondary colleges will all be represented at the event, which is open for students aged from 12 to 14. The first and second place getters will go onto a regional final which a chance to progress through to state and national finals.

River season to finish Victoria’s trout-fishing season for rivers and streams will finish at midnight on Monday. Fisheries Victoria executive director Anthony Hurst said the annual closure protected spawning trout and enabled wild stocks to replenish undisturbed each winter. “The Queen’s Birthday long weekend provides freshwater anglers with one last opportunity to catch trout in our rivers this season,” Mr Hurst said. “Although the rivers close for about three months during winter, anglers can still fish for trout and salmon in Victorian lakes and reservoirs.”

If net medical expenses exceed the threshold for the year, you may be eligible for a tax offset that takes the form of a credit against tax payable. • Keep detailed records of income and

• work-related expenses. You should bear in mind that the range of permissible work-related expenses varies widely from occupation to occupation. Refer to the Australian Tax Office website for full details. 3. Contribute to superannuation Contributions to superannuation can reduce the level of tax you would otherwise have to pay on your investments because super is taxed at a maximum of 15 percent. In addition, some people are eligible to claim a tax deduction for contributions made to super. The rules surrounding superannuation tax deductibility provisions and contribution limits are complex, so it pays to seek advice from a financial planner.

If you have a potential CGT liability, there are a few strategies that you could consider to reduce the amount you need to pay. • Keep an investment for at least 12 months • Delay any gains until the new financial year • Use carry-forward tax losses to reduce CGT Remember that this information is not personal tax advice. Always consult a professional to help you determine the best strategies for your personal circumstances. • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

B

arengi Gadjin Land Council is set to have a new chief executive after the resignation of Jim Golden-Brown.

The council’s land, water and heritage manager Michael Stewart will be acting chief executive until it finds a replacement. Mr Golden-Brown will take up a position in north-east Victoria to live closer to his daughter. A descendent from the Yuin Nation on the south-coast of NSW and La Perouse, Mr Golden-Brown has been chief executive at several Indigenous organisations across Australia.

NEW START: Jim Golden-Brown has resigned as Barengi Gadjin Land Council. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

He said in his two years in the Wimmera the council had experienced an increase in members, which was a show of strength for any organisation.

Mr Golden-Brown said he was also proud of his work at board level where he implemented a governance process.

“I’ve also been pleased to build relationships with other groups and stakeholders during my time at BGLC, and re-establish links to the community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.’’

“The directors and staff are finding their own way to overcome hurdles and I commend them on embracing the new

BGLC board member Janine Coombs said directors and staff wished Mr GoldenBrown well for the future.

“The development of enterprises, such as land and garden services and firewood packag-

ing, have also been key areas of focus for BGLC, a move which I believe will see the organisation prosper in the future,’’ he said.

Complete Control jumps career beckons as the jumping season gets into full swing.

Mango’s sweet

S

tawell fatherdaughter training combination Terry and Karina O’Sullivan continued their good luck with ex-Kiwi gallopers at Ballarat last Sunday with recent stable recruit Control.

The O’Sullivans had their charge engaged in a marathon 3000-metre event in bottomless, rainaffected conditions. Former O’Sullivan apprentice Jason ‘Grasshopper’ Lyon was in the saddle for his old mentors. Control was not rated a chance by the oncourse patrons and remained friendless with the bookies with odds of 25-1 as the starter called them into line. After beginning reasonably well the bay geld-

ing was soon taken into the leading position by his Warrnambool-based hoop with Control keeping his rivals honest by making the race a true staying test – a survival of the fittest. Passing the 600m marker the son of little known Irish-born stallion Hawkeye was five lengths clear and had all his rivals off the bit and chasing hard. After rounding the home turn and balancing up for the run to the judge, the five-year-old kicked strongly absolutely thriving on the shifty track. Having to fend off a brief challenge from eventual second place getter All Graceful, Control scored by three lengths. On the strength of this win a potential

Horsham’s leading jockey Dean Yendall made his usual appearance at the regular race meeting held on the Geelong Synthetic track. Yendall was aboard Mango’s Mojito for a $15,000 sprint over 1200m for Warrnambool-based trainer Jarrod McLean. Mango’s Mojito was quoted at 8-1 by SleepyHollow bookies just before start time due to her previous patchy form. After the starting stalls flew open the four-yearold mare landed straight into the box seat and was given a charmed run by Yendall. As the field of eight sprinting nettys thundered past the 400m marker, Mango’s Mojito looked to be relishing the synthetic conditions and was ready to launch her bid for victory shortly af-

ter straightening.

The daughter of European champion racehorse Rock of Gibraltar was asked for an effort by her Horsham hoop responding well to his vigorous urgings, delivering a three-length victory on the post. The win was much deserved for her patient Mildura based owners, the Clayhero Syndicate.

Horses to follow • Lia Landrigan’s Norton Belle looks to be hitting form with an encouraging third placing at Ballarat last Sunday and is knocking on the door to recapture her good form of late last year. • Barb Marshman’s Southern Sapphire ran an encouraging second at Hamilton last Sunday on heavy ground and would pay to follow in similar races with more wet tracks expected. • Josh Mackay is treasurer and executive of Horsham and District Racing Club.

Horsham Saints wingman Keegan Mellington displayed a physical, entertaining brand of football for his home crowd when he lined up for North Ballarat Rebels at Horsham City Oval in elite under-18 competition, TAC Cup, on Sunday. Feisty Mellington was typical of a tough Rebels outfit that outclassed reigning premiers Oakleigh Chargers by 71 points in the round eight clash. The win was the first for the season for the Rebels, who have struggled since winning the 2012 minor premiership. Mellington, left, clashes with Oakleigh forward Shaun McDonald. n independent tribunal has suspended Nhill Football Club coach Darren Weavell from all official duties with any football club until December 31, 2020.

The tribunal, after a marathon five-hour hearing in Horsham on Monday night, imposed the six-and-a-half-year sentence after finding Weavell guilty of a ‘conduct unbecoming’ charge. The three-man panel also found Stawell

Football Netball Club volunteer goal umpire Robert Morris guilty of a ‘conduct unbecoming’ charge. It suspended him from all official duties with any club until the end of the 2014 football season. Both, at the centre of a half-time melee during a Wimmera League senior match between Nhill and Stawell at Nhill’s Davis Park on May 11, have until 2pm today to appeal the findings. The league’s independent commission formally charged the pair on recommen-

dations of a league investigations officer. Western Vic Football manager Stephen McQueen said the tribunal hearing involved about 20 people, who included advocates, official club observers and various officials. He added that the hearing featured intensive cross-examination. “The tribunal had to consider extensive and conflicting evidence from both parties,” he said.

SPORT report

Battle heating up for district five HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

C

By GRANT KUCHEL

ameron Reserve at the foot of the Grampians will provide the setting for an intriguing Horsham District Football League game as a battle for third position on the ladder gathers heat.

A win for Swifts will result in the Stawell outfit draw level with Laharum at the halfway mark of the season and the Baggies will be hoping for another wet and heavy track to stop the tall Laharum forwards from dominating the air. Laharum looks far more dangerous with Shannon Argall playing across half forward and Jason Przibilla running out of the square and like many other sides Paul Hanns will be thinking about how he can limit the pair’s output. Jakob Davis and Jack Kelly might get first crack at the big two and if that fails Matt Newton could be used. But the Baggies will need to win around the clearances and stoppages to ease pressure on their back half. Swifts will want to use their speed and Hanns, Ash Cowen, Scott Carey and Sean Mantell will be the drivers behind the Baggies’ thrust towards victory. With Ricky Whitehead returning to form the Baggies are becoming a potent line-up. Laharum boasts a cohesive defensive unit led by Hamish Roberts and Keegan Mason and with tough nut Robbie Miller and Daniel Easson providing the grunt on the ground the Demons should be able to withstand the Baggies’ charge and move clear in third spot.

Test Natimuk faces its second huge test in a fortnight as the Rams make the trek out to the windswept plains of Kalkee. A loss this week for the Rams will probably

see them slip out of the five for the first time this season. Again, the containment of key forwards is the nightmare that confronts the Rams’ coaching panel. Adam Carter continues to have impact on the scoreboard each week and with teammates Grant Schultz and Josh Beddsion seem to be able to kick a winning score each week. Natimuk ‘s Ash Pekin, Tim Friend and Shaun McDonald continue to lead the Natimuk charge and with support from Jamie Elliott, Dylan Wright and Jono Lovel the Rams are a much more competitive unit. If Natimuk can rest control through the middle of the ground against Steve Schultz and Paul Christian they still have to get past an impregnable defence led by Josh Mibus who has been in brilliant form all season. Mibus’ ability to take contested marks and turn defence into attack has led to many a Kalkee score this year and the Rams won’t be able to penetrate the Kalkee defence often enough to kick a winning score.

Calculations Rupanyup ventures out to Taylors Lake this week looking to kick a monster score to thrust the Panthers back into finals calculations at the halfway mark of the year. Given good weather and a dry track the Panthers should be able to achieve their target and continue the horror season for the Lakers. Taylors Lake lacks depth and Dean Harberger, Jason Weir, Luke Robertson and Marc Davey are battling hard. But with injuries to key players the Lakers will struggle to stop a rampaging Rupanyup outfit. Drew and Matt Tyler should have plenty of opportunities up forward and with David Lang, Nathan Sasche and Glenn Wyatt controlling the midfield the Lakers’ defence might be in for another long afternoon at the office. Rupanyup needs a big boost to its percentage

the Noradjuha-Quantong defence led by Brady King and Lachie Wilson will need to put a bit of time to stopping him. The game will be won in the middle where the bigger Bomber bodies in Matt Ward and Brent McIntyre will rest control of the contest and bump the smaller Tigers off the ball. This will ensure the likes of Jordan Huff, Sam Weddell and Shane Oakley get enough opportunities to kick a winning score.

Rivalry

and if Nic Johnston can get first hands to the ball in the air then the Rupanyup small men will make sure the ball spends most of the afternoon in their front half.

Consistency Pimpinio will welcome Noradjuha-Quantong out to Tigerland this week knowing that if the Bombers are off color a little then they are a chance to cause a boil over. Adam Hall must really be worried about Noradjuha-Quantong’s consistency. The Bombers started like the proverbial house on fire last week but after quarter time managed only two goals. Shane Oakley looms as the danger man for the Bombers and Pimpinio will need to play the goal-kicker close attention.

Round nine concludes with a traditional longweekend battle between neighbouring HarrowBalmoral and Edenhope Aspley. Both sides go to another level for this clash but the Harrow-Balmoral Roos might need to find a few hidden gears if they are to match the Saints. Reports last week that joint coach James Dixon might miss four or five weeks seemed incorrect because as he was back in the side and had an impact on the scoreboard with a lazy handful of goals. If he plays close to goal again this week the Roos might have some headaches. With Matt Cranage and Will Smith also up forward as well, the Harrow-Balmoral backline led by Ryan McClure, Daniel Rogers and Chris Heath will need to be vigilant to limit scoreboard damage. Chris Oliver along with Bernie Kealy are leading an impenetrable Saints defence and it will be a great clash should Oliver go to the Roos’ main key forward Brent Penny.

Blues unbeaten as race heats up for top four MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE By MICK SHANNON

Another big weekend of football is set to unfold in Mallee Football League with the race to make the top four starting to gather heat. Hopetoun finally found form last weekend, but unfortunately went down to Woomelang-Lascelles. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers continued their strong season with a good win over Ouyen United, while WalpeupUnderbool proved too good for a determined Jeparit-Rainbow outfit. This week kicks off at Jeparit with the Lakers playing host to Beulah. Jeparit-Rainbow have produced strong footy over the season but have

failed to put four quarters together. Beulah on the other hand sits on top of the ladder with a perfect record, and is set to welcome back a string of players. Full forward David King will hope to make his return back from injury to boost the Blues’ goal-kicking stocks, while midfielders Shaun Monohan and Tim McIntosh appear set to return after both recovering from shoulder injuries. Heath Clugston has found form of late for the Lakers and the Blues will need to keep a close eye on him, especially around the clearances. In defence Adam Schulz will have the hard task of curving the influence of in-form centre half forward Dennis Redden. Redden’s strength and work rate have made him a hard match-up for opposition teams. Schulz will need help from other defenders to

ensure Redden does not get on top.

around.

pion kicking 13 goals.

Jeparit-Rainbow will put up a strong fight as it always does, but will find the pace and skill of the Beulah midfield overwhelming. The Blues will win by 40 points.

Young Demons Jordan Manly, Ben Mole and Joshua Langdon will all need to produce big games to help out the experienced players in Peter Caldow and Glenn Joyce.

This time around it will be different with the Devils showing a lot of improvement over the last few weeks.

An intriguing battle will take place on the wide expanses of Blackburn Park when Ouyen United takes on Woomelang-Lascelles.

Woomelang-Lascelles will be determined to play finals after a long time out, and will look to Joel Donnan, Rohan Coburn and Aaron Lonergan to lead by example and produce a good win.

Both teams sit level on points with Ouyen United just sitting in the top four with a higher percentage. The Cats would have breathed a sigh of relief last week when a shot by Hopetoun after the siren missed narrowly. They now have the chance to boost themselves into the top four with victory over the Demons. Ouyen United was disappointing last week and will come out all guns blazing in an effort to turn their form

Both teams have pace, and will look to break the lines, but the Cats will have more determination and will just take home a victory by 14 points.

Different Walpeup-Underbool will welcome Hopetoun to Underbool. The last time these two sides met the Walpeup-Underbool Roos won by a staggering 188 points, with Wade Cham-

Players such as Luke Carr, David Baulch and Zac Robins have led the way for Hopetoun and have lifted their team-mates around them. The Roos are just starting to get their form back, and will have Josh Charles taking control in the ruck, which will allow skillful midfielders David Piastente and Ben Fisher to get on top at the clearances. The Devils will hit hard as they still search for their first win of the season, but it is hard to see it happening against their quality opponents. The Roos will produce a solid 30-point win. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers have the bye.

Intriguing battle for Pelican Cup WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

I

By DEAN LAWSON

t would be hard to script a better match to highlight an approaching halfway point in Wimmera Football League. With the greyness of winter sucking much of the warmth from weekend games, a big Sunday clash between premiership aspirants Horsham Saints and Horsham on Sunday is set to re-stoke the fire. The Coughlin Park clash promises to be a beauty with the Saints charging through the season and Horsham back in business and looking as potent as ever. The sides will play for the Pelican Cup and the silverware has probably never been as much up for grabs as this weekend. Horsham crushed Ararat in a show of strength and joint coach Jordyn Burke’s fierce quarter-time address despite his team being up by seven goals might well have been looking a week ahead for bigger fish to fry. Horsham is on the hunt for a big scalp and there is probably none better on offer than the Saints. Burke’s coaching off-sider and ball-winner Brad Hartigan and classy Nick Pekin are in solid form and John Wood is emerging as one of the best midfielders in the competition. Dylan Parish is kicking goals and Alex Thomson is always threatening as he pushes forward and the dash of Tyler Blake looms as a worry for the Saints. The Saints had to battle hard to shrug off a determined Nhill last week but will be better for the challenge and might too have been quietly preparing for the Horsham encounter. The Saints are undefeated and sitting second on the ladder, courtesy of considerable strength in the clinches, and will deploy their hard-ball winners against Horsham’s midfield dash. The work of Phil Butsch, Garry Hallam, Bernie Ward and co under

ruckman Mick Rowe free up the footy for the likes of Darcy Tucker and Jacob Cooke-Harrison and open goal-scoring opportunities for Gavin Kelm and Heath Watson. They will run into the likes of Garrett Liston, Burke and Darcy Taylor who also like to mix it in the 50-50 contests. Horsham might skip away with the points on Sunday but will have to earn every goal.

Critical game The Sunday encounter will follow a fascinating day of Saturday games, the highlight being an encounter between Minyip-Murtoa and Dimboola. This contest at Murtoa has the potential to reach as many highs as the Horsham-Saints clash with considerable psychological treasure up for grabs. Minyip-Murtoa, sitting third, was too good for Stawell last week and like Horsham needs a major scalp to give its season momentum. Competition leader Dimboola smashed Horsham RSL Diggers with superb wet-weather football last week and well and truly has its tail up. The Roos have a multi-faceted forward structure that produces goals through the likes of Ash Clugston, Ryan Bell, Lachie Exell and bustling Jackson O’Neill. Ruckman Justin Chilver puts in hard to provide Andrew Seers, Josh Rentsch, Hamish Exell and Al Mc-

Kinnon with first use of the ball and Daniel Baker sets the defensive standard. Minyip-Murtoa likes to split and run and catch opponents on the overlap to open up the goal front for Brayden Ison. Nathan Tepper did well last week and Zach Cross’s intensity and John Delahunty’s skill will be a necessity against the Roos. Dimboola will have too many aces.

Road trip In one of the longest road trips in the competition Ararat and Nhill clash in Ararat for the Road Safe Cup. Both sides will consider this game an opportunity for a win but, despite the trip, it might be Nhill that sneaks across the line at the finish. Fans will be in for a treat consider-

Be part of Breuers

ing both sides enjoying getting into space. For the Tigers Matt Jones is an exciting player and Simon Brearley is a play architect. Adam Bound and Jayden Fischer were also good last week. Ararat struggled to kick goals last week but clever rover Alan Batchelor was good again, Harry Ganley continued his good season and Brady Miller impressed. The strength of Zac Louder will be critical for the Rats if they want to score a hometown win. Another team than enjoys running the ball, Warrack Eagles, will have too much firepower for Horsham RSL Diggers in Horsham. The Eagles are coming off a bye while the Diggers are searching for a way out of the doldrums.

Subaru motor show hits the road S

ubaru fans lamenting the cancellation of the Australian International Motor Show have a reason to celebrate, with the company holding a multi-city event all of its own.

version of the pocket-rocket that has been on the market since early 2007.

More information, including the name of the limited variant, will be made available before its expected sale date in September, with Mr Rowley adding that special edition variants of the WRX ‘seem to attract a dedicated audience all of their own.’

And the hot-ticket item will be something those fans are surely clamouring for – the recently revealed WRX concept, fresh from its global debut in New York.

A Liberty GT wagon featuring STI accessories will also be a part of Subaru’s mini motor show.

Subaru’s local arm is hosting a series of ‘mini motor shows’ with events at dealerships in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide to showcase its current and future sports models. The headlining Rex concept will be displayed for the first time anywhere in the world since its debut at the New York motor show in March.

Cancellation Subaru Australia national corporate affairs manager David Rowley said that the traveling showcase came about as a result of the cancellation of the local motor show, which had been scheduled for Melbourne this month. “Fuji Heavy Industries had very kindly offered us the WRX concept for the motor show,” he said. “And when that was curtailed, we made the decision to go ahead anyway with touring the concept out here so we have done some bespoke

Forester Despite the existence of an STIstyle S model of the previous generation Forester compact SUV, Mr Rowley said that there are no immediate plans to add a sportier variant to the new Forester range.

REX APPEAL: Subaru’s dealer showcase events will mark the first time the WRX concept has been seen since it was unveiled at the New York motor show in March.

events for our own customers.” While the WRX show car is still a concept, it points to the likely design of the production car that is expected to surface later this year, possibly at the LA motor show. The all-new WRX is likely to be built on the Impreza platform but marks a departure from the traditional Impreza-based vehicles of previous generations to a stand alone model that will be simply called ‘WRX’ and carry an entirely different body.

Subaru is giving its fans a chance to press the metal on a number of production models including a new ‘S’ variant of its critically acclaimed BRZ sports coupe that goes on sale in mid-June.

will be showcased on the show car, including a carbon fibre-type instrument panel insert, carpet mats, rear step panel, reverse camera, front and rear parking assistance, STI exhaust and STI oil cap.

The sexing up of the BRZ S is purely cosmetic, with no change in performance figures over the regular BRZ, but it adds 17-inch black Subaru Tecnica International wheels, front, side and boot-lip spoilers and a coil spring set.

Mr Rowley said that pricing of the BRZ S will be released in the coming weeks, but much like the standard BRZ, it is expected to be available in limited numbers.

New and existing BRZ accessories

Also on display will be a prototype of the current generation WRX that previews the very last special edition

“You would never say never. We don’t have any timeline at the moment, but we are always interested in zigging and zagging to maintain interest in these cars and we have a proud tradition in those areas of bringing the audience something that’s a little bit different from the mainstream,” he said. The free public Subaru events run until Saturday at Subaru Interactive at Docklands, Melbourne and then at other venues across Australia. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Diesel Toyota RAV4 tows the line T

oyota has gone some way to addressing a deficiency on its new diesel-powered RAV4 compact SUV variant – namely, its sub-par 500kg towing capacity. The oil-burning version is now rated to tow a 1000kg braked load, double the previous version, which Toyota claimed was limited by Australia’s hot climate.

despite having more torque. It also falls short of most key rivals, including the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, Nissan XTrail and Ford Kuga. Nevertheless, Mr Breen said the increase in capacity to 1000kg was appropriate given that Toyota’s own research had shown that most RAV4 buyers didn’t tow.

Toyota Australia manager of public relations Mike Breen told GoAuto the increase in towing capacity would apply to all RAV4 diesels produced from July, with vehicles likely to arrive in showrooms from early August.

“I think we should be happy with the 1000kg we have been able to get,” he said.

However, even with the increase, the diesel RAV4 still has a lower tow rating than the 2.5 petrol sold alongside it,

Diesels have made up 46 percent of all four-wheel drive RAV4 sales since launch.

“The sales of diesel have been outstanding, even with the 500kg, so I think we are quite pleased with the 1000kg increase.”

The latest RAV4 was released in Australia in February with its first ever diesel engine, but the fanfare over the new engine was overshadowed by news of the low rating, with reports suggesting that was not enough to carry a jet ski on a trailer with fuel in it. Mr Breen said despite the media attention regarding the initial low tow rating, the company has not received negative feedback from consumers. “It hasn’t really been an issue. We do our surveys after the first couple of months so the official surveys haven’t come back from dealers yet. But we haven’t heard of any concern from customers,” he said. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

TOWING THE LINE: After a surprisingly low tow rating of 500kg at launch, Toyota has increased the diesel RAV4’s capacity to 1000kg from July production.

Nissan GT-R ‘Black Edition’ locked in for Australian release Australia will become the latest country to get the cosmetically enhanced Black Edition version of the manic Nissan GT-R when it hits selected showrooms next month.

Black Edition GT-R – is no faster than the regular GT-R – which hardly wants for pace with a sprint time of just 2.8 seconds – but does feature styling tweaks inside and out to set it apart. Specially appointed Recaro seats upholstered in black and red leather highlight the interior with matching door

and dashboard trim.

RARE BREED: The Black Edition Nissan GT-R stands apart from its regular sibling courtesy of some racy cosmetic additions.

On the outside, Black Editions are immediately recognisable with special metallic black 20-inch RAYS alloy wheels and an unpainted carbon-fibre rear spoiler. At $182,500 plus on-road costs, the Black Edition Nissan GT-R will cost $10,500 more than the ‘standard’ version while the even swifter Premium Edition goes for $177,000. Evoke the best Commodore ever I

s this the final Commodore as we know it? It could be.

Commodore VF Evoke

Yes, Holden will produce another Commodore from 2017, but it will be based on a new global platform, and could therefore be cut from a rather different cloth.

J We like

Irrespective, the new base VF Evoke 3.0L SIDI V6 auto tested here is simply and unequivocally one of the greatest sedans Australia has ever produced – and certainly the best value at just $34,990 plus on-road costs.

Cabin design and execution, steering and dynamic upgrade, sumptuous ride, brilliant body control, spacious cabin, improved safety and security.

L Room for

Holden’s hard work in making its rear-drive large car smoother, quieter, more comfortable – and far nicer to be inside – has sure paid off. But, before the bouquets are foisted upon its revised flanks – and we will touch on this in detail further down – there is one thing serious bugbear holding us back from completely recommending the entry car in its current guise.

Get a grip The problem, in short, is the tyres. Grip from the new, low-rolling resistance Bridgestone Ecopia 225/60 R16 hoops are marginal at best. Even mild pedal pressure in certain damp-to-wet conditions will have the rear-end letting go mid-corner, accompanied by traction control light-flashing almost as fast as your beating heart, as you scramble to straighten the car. If you only intend to drive on dry roads, it’s fine. Otherwise, please demand better tyres or upgrade to the bigger 18-inch wheel set-up. Anyway, the latter will better fill the VF’s oversized wheel wells, although the beautifully supple and isolated ride quality that is an Evoke standout on the regular rubber will be slightly undermined. Actually, we’d just ask for stickier 16s and savour the smoothness that really defines this latest base Commodore. Evident from the moment you first lay eyes on it, the facelift is perhaps a tad too modern-day GM generic compared to the timeless VE, and so

improvement Grip levels on standard Bridgestone Ecopia tyres, V6 needs more sparkle, same-ish styling. not very distinctive. We doubt it will age as well, too. During our three-day adventure in the Evoke through rural roads and into country towns as well as into big-city streets, we were disheartened by the lack of attention it garnered. If only potential buyers could sit inside the new VF, for in here almost everything has changed for the better. Holden purists may lament the loss of ‘character’ now that the power window switches are no longer in the lower-middle console where you expect cupholders to be. They may also miss side air vents that don’t open with the front doors, the electric button that replaces the handbrake, and the wheel-sited cruise control switchgear that replaces a stalk. But in reality, it’s miles better than ever. Even diehards – perhaps especially diehards – will be happier with what’s been achieved. The outside of the car hasn’t changed much, but the inside is almost completely new. A harmonious, stylish, and logically presented dashboard awaits in a modern and appealing interior that still feels as Australian as any Holden has. It’s as if the local team raided the best of GM global parts bin, with lots of Opel Insignia switches and

controls for some Euro chic and a bit of Infiniti style thrown in. Besides the spacious and quality ambience underlined by the nicely matching metallic and rubberised plastic trim, we can’t believe a vehicle as inexpensive as the Evoke features such an extensive touchscreen interface, up-spec climate control set-up, or comprehensive high-series instrumentation. The driving position first class, the back bench sumptuous in its accommodation, the ventilation front and rear totally effective, and the media inter-connectivity and usability easy and enjoyable.

Re-profiled On the negative side of the ledger, Holden says the pillar trim has been ‘re-profiled’ so as not to impede vision as badly, but they’re still as thick as trunks. The lower plastic trim betrays the bargain-basement pricing, and we’re not sure about the cloth-like dashboard material dressing directly ahead of the front passenger – it looks a bit high-school arts and craft. Overall, however, this is the best base-model Commodore interior by a massive amount, ranking up with the Ford Territory’s as the most impres-

sive Aussie cabin effort ever. And other than the slip-sliding rubber on slick surfaces, the driving experience, too, sees a quantum leap forward. Well, dynamically, anyway, for the 3.0 SIDI V6 – though undoubtedly more hushed – isn’t a stirring or memorable engine, being somewhat bereft of fizz and sparkle... as it always has been. But as a simple tool for trade, it’s harder to reproach, with sufficient acceleration, a slick-shifting six-speed auto of agreeable response, and quite punchy mid-range oomph once the needle starts to rise into the upper rev reaches. When overtaking, the V6 can feel a bit sluggish with a load on board, but slotting the lever into manual mode makes the most of the available power and torque, with surprisingly spirited responses on offer. Better still, the electric steering is amongst the best we’ve encountered, with excellent linearity and – more interestingly – feel, giving crisp turnin and composure that truly belies the size of the car. Racing up a – mostly dry – mountain road, with the transmission in manual mode, the Evoke’s balance

and control truly amazed us, pushing tightly through turns without losing traction or poise at all despite quite a lot of bumpy corners along the way.

Backed up by a trusty set of stoppers, the chassis feels like it could – and indeed, it already does – handle more power than the hard-working V6 could muster. Conversely, on long stretches of open blacktop, in top gear, the Evoke’s relaxed and cruisy nature further endeared, with little road noise and a rock-steady feel, further underscoring how suitable this car is for driving along on Australian highways. But, boy, those tyres in the wet really spoil the serenity and security of what is an otherwise hugely accomplished and amazing value-formoney family car.

Styling Plus, we are aghast to learn that Holden still won’t fit a folding rear seat of any description in its big sedan; and we worry that the styling – lacking the handsome clarity of the VE – isn’t different enough to lure buyers back. However we applaud Holden’s efforts for what it has created under very extreme financial hardship, especially when the original plan called for a complete Commodore reskin. Just 10 years ago the Large Car segment commanded 35 per cent of total new-vehicle sales, compared to only four per cent so far this year. Could the writing be on the wall for the Commodore as we know it? Be assured, though, that this Evoke is a bit of a masterpiece for the price, and a compelling reason to reconsider buying that Corolla/CX-5/Captiva import as your next family car. This is the best Commodore ever. Relish the VF, and for that matter the Falcon and the Territory, while you can, folks. Byron Mathioudakis © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Ford Australia may have survived with Focus: Carr Ford Australia may have survived beyond 2016 if it had committed to building the Focus small car, according to the man who helped bring Holden Cruze production to Australia. Former industry minister Kim Carr, who helped to provide the framework that is expected to keep Holden and Toyota making cars here into the next decade, told GoAuto that it was entirely Ford’s decision to walk away from plans to shore up its Australian car-making operations by building a small car. “The company chose to withdraw from it – and remember they said publicly that they could not see how General Motors could make money on the Cruze,” Senator Carr said.

“Well, they did make money on the Cruze. “We took capacity out of Korea to build the Cruze. This demonstrates the success of that program.” Ford announced in 2007 that it would build the Focus small car in Australia from 2010, alongside the Falcon family car and ute and Territory SUV, as well as fit the Falcon with an imported V6 rather than the traditional in-line six-cylinder engine.

would start building the Cruze sedan and hatch on its South Australian assembly line, launching production in 2011. Holden’s scheme went ahead, and the Cruze now outsells the traditionally strongselling Holden Commodore large car. Mr Carr said Ford’s decision to pull out of Australia was a ‘national tragedy’ even though it had been a ‘matter of public conversation’ for some time.

However, it reversed that decision in 2009 with Focus production instead shifting to Thailand and a federal government handout giving more life to the locally built engine.

“The truth of the matter is that Ford’s decision rests upon low production volumes, and then the consequence of not having an export market is those problems are going to be exacerbated,” he said.

The decision is in stark contrast to Holden, which about the same time announced it

“The high dollar makes it difficult to maintain export markets even if you pursue

LOSS OF FOCUS: Ford reneged on a 2007 decision to build the Focus small car in Australia from 2010, cutting it off from a potential export earner.

them. Toyota and General Motors have pursued export markets with much more vigour, and I believe their long-term prospects are good – very good.” He said the boom in the mining industry had pushed the value of the Australian

dollar up against other world currencies, creating a market that was extremely difficult for manufacturers. Mr Carr also singled out the free trade agreement with Thailand, set up in 2005 to take advantage of South-East Asia’s second-largest econo-

my, as one that had harmed Australia’s car-makers. “It’s fantasy to believe that we operate in a level playing field on the international trading system,” he said. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013
