Horsham in world title bid BY DEAN LAWSON

H

orsham Motorcycle Club members will know next week whether they have won a bid to host the most prestigious junior motocross event in the world.

The club has lobbied through international channels for Horsham’s Dooen circuit to be the venue for the first World Junior Motocross Championships in Australia. The Weekly Advertiser believes the club’s efforts have been successful and that a State Government announcement on May 16 will confirm the fixture for 2018. If it happens, the event will be the biggest and most prestigious championship meeting the Horsham club has presented at its Dooen Recreation Reserve headquarters. It will also be one of the few times, if not the first time, that the Wimmera has hosted a mainstream sporting world championship event. Horsham Motorcycling Club spokesman Kenny Watts said club representatives were waiting anxiously for updates but

like everyone else with a vested interest in the bid, expected to know more next week. “If it is successful it would be huge. It would put Horsham and the Wimmera on the world map in not only motor sport but also overall,” he said. Horsham Motorcycle Club has won a growing national reputation for the presentation of major events and its championship-quality track. It originally contacted Motorcycling Australia for information about the world junior titles before starting international negotiations.

A successful junior world championship bid would mean the region would be subject to extensive international exposure. To put the scope of a winning bid into perspective, Horsham organisers, apart from providing world-class facilities for professional factory teams, promotors and visitors, would also have to provide a media centre to meet the needs of up to 40 journalists from around the world. The Horsham club would most likely run the event in

August or September. Mr Watts said while the club was keen to keep building on its cache of high-profile events, for the benefit of the club and the wider Wimmera community. He said the club was also exploring the chances of developing another ‘first’ for Australia, a straight ‘rhythm race’ meeting, after receiving 1600 tonnes of clean-fill soil from Horsham Rural City Council. “It’s basically about two riders in each race sprinting against each other on a dead straight track full of obstacles,” he said. “It’s only been run once in the world, in America on a drag strip. It might mean running it from the start of the go-kart track and finishing near the gun club, and if we’re going to run it we would be looking at securing it as a national event. “If we could get a big-name rider to come from America it could be quite something. It might only involve 20 to 30 riders but we could create various categories and it would be intense.”

Call-out for arts history Horsham Arts Council is on the hunt for stories, photographs, programs, posters or any other information that might provide copy for a commemorative coffee-table book.

Council representatives are preparing the book in celebration of the council’s 50th anniversary. Arts council spokesman Si-

mon Dandy said the hope was that the book would be ready by October-November. “We would love anyone with historical information or memorabilia about Horsham Arts Council to come forward,” he said. “We would also love to hear funny stories, anecdotes about people’s time with the HAC. “It will also be a great histor-

ical document for Horsham. It will be perfect for businesses to buy for their reception areas and they would also be great as Christmas presents for family and friends.” People with material for the coffee-table book or keen to know more can contact Simon Dandy on 0404 092 407 or email simon.dandy@capitis. com.au.
