Miss Bibby, who was unable to attend Saturday morning’s Cruise Hawaii giveaway at Horsham Plaza, is pictured receiving her prize from, from left, MIXX FM breakfast show co-host Kaycee Bould, plaza centre manager Allison Roberts, italktravel’s Anne Taylor and 3WM and MIXX FM promotions co-ordinator Jess Keller. The main prize comprises flights, a cruise and accommodation in Hawaii for two adults and two children, courtesy of italktravel. Miss Bibby was one of 12 finalists and submitted her winning entry at Horsham’s Thai Basil. The remaining finalists, who shopped at participating businesses across the Wimmera, each received a $100 gift voucher. The promotion was a major success, attracting more than 50,000 entries. Broad: Respect key M

BY DEAN LAWSON

ember for Mallee and National Party representative Andrew Broad is confident he commands enough respect within Federal Parliament to work with whoever ultimately wins government.

ACCOLADE FOR EDITOR PAGE 7

Mr Broad, returned with more than a 25.8 percent primary-vote swing in last weekend’s federal election, said the overall result would demand greater respect between politicians. “I think that’s what people are looking for in politics. It’s called being an adult, it is as simple as that. It’s not rocket science,” he said. “We should be able to have a robust debate and be decent about it. I think that has been lost a bit in parliament.”

IN THIS ISSUE

To late yesterday, with 91 of 97 polling booths counted, figures showed Mr Broad had polled 48,999 firstpreference votes, or 64.64 percent of the Mallee electorate vote. On the critical two-candidate preferences involving 88 booths he had 71.55 percent of the vote, representing a minus 2.11 swing against him. His closest rival was Labor’s Lydia Senior who attracted 16,199 or 21.37 percent of first-preference votes with a positive 3.87 percent swing. On two-party preferred voting she had 28.45 percent of the vote. In Wannon, with 94 of 95 booths counted, voters also returned Liberal and minister Dan Tehan, who polled 23,406 first-preference votes or 31.38 percent, experiencing a 0.96 percent

Nationals

Mr Broad’s success reflected consolidating and improving political representation for the Nationals across the country. He said he believed a fundamental reason for his strong performance was that Wimmera and Mallee people were fair-minded and reasonable and understood a need for strong advocacy for services such as roads, education, telecommunications and health. “They also have very high bulldust

radars and appreciate simple language and straight talking,” he said. “I think that also generally applies to many country people. “People in the Mallee just didn’t buy Labor’s Medicare scare campaign. “There is actually a lot changing and a lot being done in our electorate. “You just have to scratch the surface a bit to to see it happening. Why is it getting done? Because people in our patch role up the sleeves and get on with it. It’s everything from relatively small projects such as finding money for a kitchen at a footy ground at Stawell to responding to Don Johns poking me in the chest and saying ‘we need to improve oncology services in Horsham’.” Continued page 7
