PROJECT ODYSSEY: John Deckert proudly shows off an historic Avro Anson aircraft gradually returning to its former glory as part of a reconstruction project at Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre. A dedicated team of volunteers, including Mr Deckert, have spent hours either working on the aircraft or promoting the centre and its projects. The heritage centre, a Nhill district community venture, is getting closer to having enough money to acquire another historic aircraft – a Second World War Wirraway. The centre needs another $85,000 to reach the $300,000 price tag for a fully-operational Wirraway. Volunteers will be seeking community pledges at a Rotary Market Day at Nhill on September 17 and will present a special screening of the movie Dunkirk at Nhill Community Centre on October 8 as another fundraiser for the Wirraway appeal. Food revolution

G

rampians Food Alliance will help launch a three-year national tour designed to encourage more neighborhoods to grow their own food.

The alliance has joined forces with Aussie Food Revolution to run a project in the region from October 21 to November 5. The project invites neighbours to get together to register for Eat My Street parties. Aussie Food Revolution team members will then help residents start edible gardens while providing a barbecue and live music from ARIAnominated sing-songwriter Marie Wilson.

Grampians Food Alliance co-ordinator Rachel Whittaker said the Aussie Food Revolution was a much-needed project for the communites of Ararat, Stawell, Beaufort and districts. “What is particularly unique about this project is the fun element of the planting parties and the live music events, which is great for families,” she said. “Our health is the most important thing and the program provides an opportunity for communities to move towards a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.” Grampians Pyrenees Primary Care Partnership, Ararat Rural Council, Northern Grampians Shire and East

Grampians Health Service are providing funding for the Grampians launch. Northern Grampians mayor Tony Driscoll said he welcomed the concept with open arms. “This is a great idea and of course the council fully supports anything that promotes health and vitality in our shire,” he said. “It’s great that they have used the Grampians as a launching pad and I’m sure the people who get involved will benefit from the health message as well as the social interaction and music.” Project manager Joanne Thompson said Aussie Food Revolution aimed to

create significant and positive change. She said the Eat My Street project reinvigorated the concept of community planting, where people came together to share produce. She said the project might involve planting a vegetable crop for the short term or fruit trees as a longer-term project where community members could share what they grew. “It is up to the individual community how big or small it can be,” she said. “There are no rules – it could be the front garden, back garden, even nature strips where permitted. It is all about improving health and community wellbeing.” Ms Thompson said all material

needed to start gardens during the street parties was supplied, although people could bring their own tools if required. “There’s no blood, sweat and tears – it’s about laying down mulch and putting in seedlings,” she said. “We’re not trying to change the world, but perhaps spark an idea.” A minimum of six households are required to register for a street party. Groups in Grampians municipalities keen to transform their streets and to host Eat My Street planting parties can register online at aussiefoodrevolution.com/eatmystreet.
