Bridge works to start orsham should have a $1.2-million pedestrian bridge across the Wimmera River by October, with construction due to start within weeks.

Wangaratta-based J and R Industries will construct the 75-metre bridge from Apex Island across the river to Southbank. The design is similar to a suspension bridge built in Mudgee, New South Wales. Horsham Rural City Council technical services director John Martin said the bridge’s steel structure would be pre-fabricated in Wangaratta and then constructed on-site. “One of the interesting, and maybe

challenging, parts of construction will be the actual erection of the prefabricated structure. Very large cranes will be needed, which will create quite a spectacle,” he said. Mr Martin said that, all going well, the six-month construction timeline

would mean the bridge would be finished by October. He said two community consultation sessions last week attracted more than 30 people to hear about the construction of the bridge. “We were really keen to hear feed-

back, particularly about the colour of the bridge. The towers on the Mudgee bridge are white and there was some concern that white might stand out too much,” he said. “We’ve formed a small sub-committee of community members to work

with Cr Robin Barber and the colour will be decided within the next four to six weeks.” The previous State Government contributed $500,000 to the bridge, with the outstanding balance from council and a Southbank developer. Other works to be undertaken as part of the project include upgrading the existing footbridge on the north side of Apex Island; constructing a culvert across the causeway from Apex Island to Barnes Boulevard for better access, particularly emergency services; and concrete paths to connect the new bridge to the existing footbridge. There will also be improved signs to explain Aboriginal significance at the site; landscaping, installing drinking water fountains and extra lighting.
