APPROVAL: Holy Trinity Lutheran School has been given the nod to expand its education services to year 12. It will become the first school in Horsham to offer classes from prep to year 12. The development follows 18 months of planning, lobbying and presenting. The school has been active, hosting a free dress and crazy hair day last week, with money raised going to the Fred Hollows Foundation. Sporting their ‘crazy’ look, from left, are prep pupil Amy Bolwell, with grade one pupils Bella King, Olivia Young and Natalie Bolwell. For more on the school’s expansion, see page 3. here and when? That’s the question anglers chasing the prizewinning fish in Sunday’s big Labour Day fishing contest in Horsham will be asking when lines go into the Wimmera River on Sunday.

If anglers believe the location of previous winning catches between Riverside and Horsham Weir provide any sort of clue, then they need to think again. Long-time contest volunteer and Horsham businessman

Kevin Dellar, who has helped run the charity fundraiser for 39 years, revealed that ‘to his knowledge’ the winning fish had never come from the same spot twice. “If any spot has come remotely close, it is probably near the jetty at the end of River Road opposite Sawyer Park,” he said. “But apart from that, the number-one fish has come from just about every section of the river. “There are a lot of different holes where these fish tend to hang around and with a flush

of fresh water in the river their location is anyone’s guess.” Anglers have been busy pegging out their riverbank sites in Horsham for the contest during the past week while others have been scoping out their camping spots for weeks. On Monday, entries for The Weekly Advertiser Horsham Fishing Contest had climbed to more than 1500, suggesting a final list of up to or beyond 2500 by Sunday. The field included 1120 seniors, 310 juniors and 108 ‘tiddlers’. With a forecast of a cool

change from hot weather, organisers were expecting a flood of last-minute entries. Businesses have again strongly supported the iconic event and prizes worth more than $70,000 are up for grabs. The overall winner will have the choice of a Jayco Dove Camper, Kia Cerato car or Savage Jabiru 415 boating package. Fish eligible for most major prizes are yellowbelly, catfish, silver perch, redfin and Murray cod and there are various prizes for heaviest carp measuring longer than 30 centimetres.

Based on catch restrictions, Murray cod must be between 55cm and 75cm to be eligible for a prize. Anglers must return all other cod to the river.

Check details

The contest’s Adele Rohde said organisers were delighted with early entries and optimistic of a large family-friendly fishing crowd. “There have been a lot of stories about the lengths some people are going to in preparation for the contest,” she said. “In one instance, a mum has contacted us to tell us how her

seven-year-old slept out at the Apex shed to collect his stake and had already written out his acceptance speech,” she said. Mrs Rohde urged anglers to make sure, when they caught a fish, to check all their details – such as tag numbers – were on fish sent back to a marshalling area. She also reminded people to observe common courtesy, avoid making excessive noise and remember police and firefighters would be making regular patrols along the river. Continued page 3
