rganisers of anticancer fundraisers in Horsham and Ararat have urged families to combine Mother’s Day celebrations on Sunday with the fight against breast cancer.

Sawyer Park in Horsham and at 9am at Richardson Oval, Ararat. Officials are urging participants to enter online at www.mothersdayclassic.com. au.

Ms Liston said she had become involved in the Horsham event because she knew the impact cancer had on families.

Horsham Mother’s Day Classic coordinator Katrina Liston said the national run and walk represented the perfect way for families to start a day dedicated to ‘mums’.

“I really enjoy helping out for such a good cause. People from all age groups get involved. As well raising money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, the day is also about celebrating mums,” she said.

“What better way than to start off a Mother’s Day than for families to gather for a common cause and activity in the morning before heading off to their respective luncheons, morning teas or whatever else they have planned?” she said.

“It’s just a great way to launch into the day. It’s my first as a mum so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Mayor set to open new Target store Target Australia will launch its new $2.6-million Horsham store at 9am next Thursday.

Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble will officially open the 3100 square-metre store, which represents the culmination of months of construction and design work.

The store will be the first full-line Target in the region and the first to feature the retailer’s new look and layout outside Melbourne.

Target officials have promised customers a ‘true department store experience’ with personalised services including beauty advisors, fashion stylists as well as bra and shoe fitters.

The new Target is double the size of the Target Country store in Firebrace Street it will replace and will provide shoppers with ‘a wider range of merchandise than

ever, specifically tailored for the area’.

Store manager Travis Thompson said he worked closely with Target’s merchandise team to create a diverse mix of products that would complement the busy lifestyles of Wimmera residents.

“As Horsham continues to grow, we plan to grow with it and have planned our store accordingly,” he said.

“The opening of our new Horsham store reflects Target’s investment in the area through the development and construction of the site in addition to the new employment opportunities offered to local residents.

Target has employed a staff of 70 from across the region to join the 13-team members transferring from the Target Country site.

Festival spokesman David Wheaton said the festival was ‘only going to get better and better’, adding that committee members were still tallying figures early this week.

“The biggest highlight for the committee was holding the crowd all the way through to late Sunday afternoon. We have really made our mark as a weekend event,” he said.

“The weather was perfect, the balance of exhibitors was just right, there was plenty for the kids to do and we had really appealing entertainment.

“Celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow was fantastic and headline act Sheilas of the 70s with Monique Brumby had the crowd partying right to the end.”

Mr Wheaton said the event’s organising committee was considering ways of building on the festival, such as introducing more artistic elements after the success of a ‘Bush Chooks’ handcraft attraction.

He added that making a VIP marquee, where patrons had the opportunity to sample wines while chatting with the winemakers, an even more exclusive experience and building on leadup events were also on the drawing board.

This year’s festival layout also won broad accolades with the people easily navigating their way to attractions and exhibitors pleased with

fast-paced trading.

“The winemakers’ alley was effective and the vintage memorabilia celebrating 150 years of winemaking in the region really set the tone,” he said.

“The grape stomping, which has become our signature event both days, was just great. We even had Poh and Monique have a go, which really thrilled the crowd.”

Mr Wheaton congratulated the volunteers who travelled from across the state to be involved in running the festival.

“All of them worked so tremendously hard and seemed to really get a lot out of the experience. We couldn’t have done it without them,” he said.

O

ne of the most perplexing issues in the fight against discrimination must surely be what actually qualifies as discrimination.

Without thinking, some of us early this week were automatically ready to applaud a fresh national call for companies to balance up their gender mix in workplace leadership.

It was then that the glaring spectre of hypocrisy rose in the conscience and fired a warning broadside across the bow, forcing hands back into pockets.

Just hang on a minute! Last time we looked, crushing the evils of discrimination was about providing equal opportunity, not levering circumstances to help a particular group or type of person.

Patronisation is the quiet achiever in the world of discrimination and the truth is

that giving someone a ‘leg up’ based on gender, race, religion, sexual inclination or disability is as bad as holding them back or overlooking them for the same reason.

Sorry to everyone trying to crack this politically correct whip but to say ‘there are not enough women in leadership positions’ has the same ring as ‘there are too many women in leadership positions’, regardless of whether it is true.

In constantly trying to promote equality, sections of our community are confusing the issue with a charter to simply help people reach their potential. They are different ideals.

Okay, we acknowledge that in many circumstances, perhaps because of tradition, ignorance or socio-economic factors, that the immediate playing field might be far from level for everyone.

Too bad! The only way to have real equality is to rigidly stick to a ‘best person for the job’ philosophy and to let evolution of the concept take its course.

A person’s ability, attitude, character, potential, personality, qualifications and even availability, should always tick the boxes before anything else. Every individual circumstance is different and being black, white, male, female, gay or straight is irrelevant.

Apart from all the obvious nasty ills of discrimination be it for racist, sexist or any other prejudiced platform, it is perhaps the most benign of reasons that we should rid our society of this scourge, in all its forms. Above all, discrimination simply doesn’t make sense.

Plain English As we count down to another federal election we urge politicians from both sides of Parliament to be honest in their use of the English language.

There is no hiding from the fact that a government ‘levy’ or ‘duty’ is a tax.

To this day many of us still struggle to grips with the term ‘stamp duty’ when all it really means is camouflaged tax.

Second pathway event at Harrow Harrow Bush Nursing Centre will continue to present the stories of Harrow women with a Pathways to Harrow event later this year.

“Although we are constantly promoting that we have a distribution of more than 23,000 newspapers across the region every week we sometimes forget how far it actually goes. It is such a large part of western Victoria that we look after.

Hoping more than expecting a quick response to find caring homes for the tiny youngsters, he was inundated with calls from across western Victoria.

But the responses kept coming and by the start of this week Mr Lawson had taken his 42nd call and given his umpteenth apology to enthusiastic but ultimately disappointed dog enthusiasts.

“It was simply overwhelming. There were several calls from Horsham, Ararat and

Dimboola takes NBN front seat Dimboola is among 41 Victorian towns included in the latest three-year National Broadband Network construction timetable.

It will be the first Wimmera centre outside Horsham to get access to high-speed broadband internet, with service connection by December 2015.

Fibre construction has started in two new Horsham estates and construction overall for the city will start in November and finish in March next year.

Dimboola houses and businesses are among 303,000 across Victoria added to the timetable.

The new locations bring to 994,600 in Victoria – and almost 5 million nationwide – the number of premises where construction will have commenced or where people can order an NBN service by June 2016.

The entire rollout is scheduled to be complete in 2021.

NBN Co’s Victoria community relations manager Lalla Mackenzie said Dimboola developments would include fixed wireless as well as fibre optic installations.

orld traveller, author and 2012 Paralympian cyclist Stuart Tripp, 24, will be guest speaker at Central Grampians Local Learning Employment Network next Thursday.

Tripp, who lost his leg in a car crash in 1994 and has since become an international athlete, author and motivational speaker, will address the meeting at East Grampians Health Service’s Pyrenees House at 6pm.

Tripp wrote the book ‘Travelling Hopefully’ and represented Australia at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Before the Paralympics he trained and com-

He endured months of confinement, multiple operations, severe physical pain and emotional anguish after the car crash. He then drew on positive influences to pursue his dreams.

FILM SUCCESS: Ararat district youngsters such as Will Chamings will be among beneficiaries after an Ark Toy and Activity Centre Auxiliary film night at Ararat’s Astor Cinema raised almost $1060.

friend once told me that empathy, unless acted upon, was as useful as a chocolate teapot. She and I were 15 at the time. I did not realise the wisdom of those words then, but now with all the experiences of life, I believe it is the mother lode of all sayings.

There is no doubt that empathy is one of the highest forms of virtue; a beautiful emotion to behold, perhaps one of the inherent parts of humanity. Some would say it is what keeps the world afloat. Then comes the million-dollar question – shouldn’t the world be a better place with this key virtue in existence?

So here I am struggling to put on paper the conflicted emotions that run through me while I keep debating how useful is this emotion in actuality. Perhaps in my case, it is an imagined case of survivorguilt but deep down I know it is not guilt, but more of shame when I take stock of what is happening around us and how we are reacting.

The world always seems plagued by some kind of disaster – if not natural, then man-made. In only a few weeks, we have seen almost everything; deranged bombings, building collapses, civil-war casualties, plant explosions and nature’s fury.

the blink of an eye. One minute these people were living, breathing, perhaps even living their lives to the fullest and then nothing than memories. To the rest of the world, they are mere statistics of rather unfortunate events, a mere blip on the radar of the living.

Of course, we mourned, but to what use? With this rather abundant virtue called empathy we steeled ourselves to watch the graphic images, made commiserative clicking sounds, tweeted incessantly, paid homage to the dead and then continued on our own plodding journey of life.

Some among us would have gone the extra mile, organised fundraisers, rushed to the affected zones or volunteered in some way.

But the majority would have returned to our own insular worlds driven by egocentric emotions that would out-beat empathy any given day.

I am no exception. While someone out there was losing a battle

Lessons How easy it is to lock ourselves in our own little dramas and blow our superficial and insignificant issues into Herculean proportions? This is what my whinge is about and perhaps my guilt too.

We might be empathetic to what is happening around us, but we seem to fail to learn valuable lessons. Our empathy seems to be short-lived and after the moment is past, we seem to have selective memory about it and maybe even resurrect our emotional barriers again.

Why can’t we learn all around us; perhaps use our instinctive emotion not just to feel and forget but reach out a little from our blinkered worlds? Perhaps all we need is a healthy dose of perspective, which might do the trick and teach us to value the people and the blessings in our lives.

I will refrain from regurgitating well-intentioned but overused clichés about the brevity or fragility of our lives; however the next time we are tempted to throw a tantrum, work into a rage over something petty, wallow in self-pity, or refuse to be magnanimous and forgive, it will be our cue to don our empathy hat and see the world without our blinkers and barriers.

Expo chairman Chris Wallis said he was delighted with the announcement.

“AgriFood Skills Australia is one of 11 independent, not-for-profit Industry Skills Councils established by the Australian Government. AgriFood drives a skills and workforce development agenda across several sectors including rural industries and food and beverage processing.”

“This project will support locally developed solutions and training suited to each region’s particular needs:

It is based on a very successful model trialled and independently validated in northern NSW over the last three years,” he said.

“AgriFood Skills Australia is supporting the Wimmera and Southern Mallee Careers Expo to highlight the opportunities for young people in the agrifood sector.

Mr Wallis said an organising committee had been working on the 2013 expo since last year and was ‘extremely’ pleased with this year’s program at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong was progressing.

“We have a growing list of exhibitors from all parts of the vocational spectrum,” Mr Wallis said.

Strategies There are certainly strategies that we pet owners can implement to make moving as smooth, safe and comfortable as possible for our pets.

Some of these include:

his week, I’ve moved house. Moving can be a traumatic time for the best of us – the packing and unpacking, not knowing which box to look in for our things, living in a new and unfamiliar place.

Even small changes like trying to find a light switch, or waking in a strange bedroom, can be disorientating for some time.

My cat has only known one home, having lived in the same house since he was a two-dayold foster kitten. So I felt quite sorry for him as I loaded him into the car for the journey to our new house.

If moving is stressful for people, you can imagine how difficult and even distressing it must be for our pets.

Moving house is a busy time. Our pets will inevitably pick up on changes; both physical changes as familiar environments alter and objects disappear into boxes, and changes in their owners, particularly if the owners are feeling stressed These changes can lead to anxiety for many animals. It is important that we remember our pets, no matter how busy we are, and stick to established routines involving feeding, exercise, grooming and play times. Many pets will also benefit from the reassurance that some extra TLC can provide.

Cats in particular become very attached to their homes, and we often hear stories of cats disappearing from a new house and returning to their old one. It is vitally important that cats are kept indoors at their new house for at least a month, but preferably more, in order to allow

• Check your new house and garden carefully with an eye to pet safety. Ensure fencing is safe and has no gaps, gates latch safely, and there are no sharp or otherwise dangerous objects in the yard.

• Check for and dispose of any chemicals or poisons that may have been left in sheds or under the house.

• Ensure cats and dogs are up to date with flea prevention, because houses which have previously held pets might have flea eggs or larvae in carpets or floorboards.

• Provide familiar smells and objects for pets.

Bedding that hasn’t been immediately washed, and familiar toys and food, will provide comfort to pets in an unfamiliar environment.

• Ensure that pets have a secure, quiet place that they can retreat to, such as a kennel or crate. Give them lots of attention and reassurance.

• If pets are moving in with new animals, introduce them slowly and under strict supervision to avoid any problems.

• Consider the use of pheromone sprays – these products can be used to help lessen anxiety and produce positive, calming feelings in both dogs and cats. Your vet clinic can provide the products and advice on how best to make use of them.

Moving house can certainly be a hard time for everyone involved, but with a little forethought and attention, we can avoid much of the distress that a change to a new home can cause our pets.

Racing set to heat up at Horsham meet ADVERTISEMENT

his coming Monday sees racing return to Horsham for the first time this year. Although the weather is cold the racing is sure to be hot!

The feature events of the day are the Dallas Rintoule Memorial Handicap along with the TVN Slickpix Silver Bowl heat.

Another feature at Monday’s race day is the Highland Sportswear and Hygain Feeds Trainer and Jockey’s challenge for the leading trainer and jockey at Horsham for the 201213 racing season. It’s no surprise to see Darryl Dodson equal leader (largely due to the deeds of Texan Warney) with Warrnambool trainers Bill & Simon Wilde. Dodson will be out to sew up the series with likely multiple runners.

Just like Dodson in the

trainer’s title it’s no surprise to see local Horsham jockey Dean Yendall out in front on 23 points, clear of nearest rival Holly McKechnie on 16 points. Yendall has the title as good as sewn up.

The meeting is also expected to have strong representation from leading Trainers such as Darren Weir, Stawell duo Terry & Karina O’Sullivan and it would be no surprise to see the Peter Moody stable represented with multiple runners throughout the 8 race program.

Most local trainers are expected to have representation also.

The first event is expected to run around 12.00noon with the final event after 4.00pm.

immera Parent Support Network will celebrate its 20th anniversary this month.

The anniversary also marks a 20-year relationship between the network and Wimmera Uniting Care.

Network coordinator Anne Page said the network provided support for families with children with disabilities, regardless of geographical location.

“The network provides mutual support through parentto-parent contact as well as relevant service and referral information,” she said.

“It encourages participation and involvement of 150 families who would otherwise feel extremely isolated. The network also provides feedback to service agencies and related professionals about current needs and the appropriateness of their services.”

Ms Page said the network relied on dedicated volunteers who have kept the network flourishing for two decades.

“Without volunteers the network simply wouldn’t be pos-

Stock concerns Dry conditions across Victoria have prompted Department of Primary Industries officials to remind farmers to avoid transporting stock in poor condition.

Animal health officer Veronica Campbell said it was important farmers sought advice and follow droughtfeeding guides to preserve paddock feed and maintain stock health.

“If farmers are considering selling their stock it is important to make sure that the stock are in a good condition and are strong enough to travel to ensure that they are not at risk of going down during transport,” Miss Campbell said.

uckheap, a fun and interactive theatre show about two people packing up their house for ‘the big move’, is making its way to Horsham with a one-off 11am performances at Wesley Performing Arts Centre on May 21.

Muckheap has been an international hit for children and family performance company Polyglot Theatre since premiering in 2001.

The show has toured across Australia and played in places from the Sydney Opera House to Singapore, the USA and the Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival – where it was performed in Mandarin Chinese.

The 2013 tour of Muckheap features its themes of recycling and re-using junk, combining puppetry, physical theatre and comedy, as relevant as ever.

Finding all their hoarded junk too interesting and entertaining to throw away, the characters in Muckheap cope with their giant mess by throwing themselves into a story, illustrated with whatever comes to hand. What emerges is the story of Jacky and the Beanstalk… with a twist that parallels their own situation.

Performers Terry Bennetts, Evan Platshschinda and ‘the Kimberley Guitar Man’ Ginger Cox will present a country music smorgasbord at Nhill Bowling Club later this month.

Award-winning Bennetts, singer-songwriter Platschinda and Cox will perform at the club from 7.30pm on May 21 as part of their Band of Mates tour.

The performance will be a lead-in for their appearance at the Barham Balladeers and Country Music Festival in NSW between May 23 and 26.

Platschinda had been entertaining for many years and returned to performing full time after attending a country music

festival in Tamworth in 2003.

He performed throughout Australia in 2006 and in 2008 was a grand finalist in Tamworth’s Bush Balladeers Star Quest.

Bennetts last performed in Nhill in 2007 with his late wife Jenny. From Kendenup in WA, he and his wife won more than 20 awards across Australia and were finalists at 2006 Bush Ballad Golden Guitar Awards in Tamworth.

Cox is also from WA and been known as ‘The Kimberley Guitar Man’ after his first album.

He won a Best New Talent award at Bungendore Country Muster this year.

Towns’ sharing website set to go live Halls Gap and Pomonal will have an electronic information sharing hub to bring various community sectors together when the towns’ new website goes live later this month.

Residents from the two communities are invited to see the website’s potential at an official launch at MOCO Gallery in Grampians Road, Halls Gap at 7.30pm next Thursday when the website team

Northern Grampians Shire Council’s Cr Paul Russell, who has been involved in the website development, said the new site would include emergency and general information, news, events and a community directory.

“The website will be a portal for local organisers, community associations and sporting groups to come together and share information, and for government departments and other organisations to include important emergency information.”

The State and Federal Governments’ Community Recovery Fund has paid for the site in the wake of 2011 floods that caused widespread landslides in and around Halls Gap.

Assessing aged care affordability, choice C

hanges to Australia’s aged-care system are set to impact residential and at-home care patients. When considering affordable and suitable care for your loved ones, these reforms may influence your decisions.

In response to a Productivity Commission report into caring for older Australians, the Federal Government has announced changes to Australia’s aged-care system called Living Longer, Living Better. The two main changes introduced by the reforms are: • greater resources for at-home care; and • the introduction of means testing for costs.

Naturally, when investigating options for an elderly person, finding the right level of care is paramount, as is anticipating future care requirements. The government plans to remove the difference between high and low care, meaning, among other things, that the level of care can be adjusted seamlessly as needed.

Given a choice, most people would prefer to remain in their own homes but places are limited by the number of visiting carers and services available. The

or their estate. Bond amounts will be recovered by the government by it levying a regular fee against the care facility.

In further meeting this preference, differing levels of home care will be available. Costs associated with care will be calculated on the single basic age pension and there may also be an extra income tested fee determined by the care required.

Further reforms to be introduced include the following:

The rationale is that those who can afford to pay for care should do so, while the government will subsidise those who don’t have the capacity to pay. People on full pensions will be exempt from paying care costs. Fees will be capped on an annual or lifetime basis and indexed annually.

From 1 July 2014, all aged care residents will be required to pay bonds.

To safeguard against the care facility becoming insolvent and unable to repay bonds, the government will undertake to make the repayment to either the resident

These will be available to all residents for an additional fee, and residents can choose to opt-in or opt-out.

• Additional funding will be allocated to caring for patients with dementia.

Although the Productivity Commission report recommended that the family home be included in means testing and asset testing, the government has determined that it will remain exempt.

Zaytsev breaks duck neck.

H

orsham galloper Zaytsev broke his maiden duck at Penola’s Millicent Cup meeting last Sunday.

Trained by Paul Preusker and ridden by stable jockey Holly McKechnie the three-year-old colt was a warm favourite with ‘crow-eater’ punters to take out the 1600-metre event.

After the starter released the field McKechnie elected to ride Zaytsev quietly, content to settle towards the rear early.

As the 12-horse field made their way past the 700m marker of the picturesque Coonawarra course the son of former Godolphin galloper Ratki was given clear galloping room sliding around the outside of the field with McKechnie placing him in a prominent position just before straightening for home.

Under hard riding from his Horsham hoop Zaytsev was able to come with a strong run down the outside diving on the post to score victory by a long

Diggers to celebrate W

immera Football League club Horsham RSL Diggers will celebrate a major milestone when they take on MinyipMurtoa on Saturday night.

The Diggers will use the night game at Horsham City Oval to reflect on 30 years of major-league competition.

The club was soon enjoying success and in its 30 years has won eight football premierships, including at least one at every grade, and nine netball premierships.

Horsham RSL Diggers president Peter Miller invited anyone with historic connections to the club to post-match celebrations on Saturday night.

“We’ve made a special effort to invite the players from 1983 and some are travelling significant distances to be there.

Of course everyone else is welcome as well,” he said.

Horsham RSL Diggers joined Wimmera League from Horsham District League in 1983 as Imperials-Wonwondah, seizing the opportunity to provide its players with the best football and netball possible.

game by a few points to Warracknabeal. It did, however, under Bunn’s wife Robyn, win its first A Grade netball game.

Evolution The club, with players such as Peter Cooper, Michael Munn, Bruce Knight, the late Des Michaelides, Brian Thomson and others such as Les Wills and brothers Greg and Bryan Harvey, recorded its first Wimmera Football League win, against Murtoa, the following week. It finished sixth that season.

Bunn left for North Adelaide, Peter Morrison took the coaching reins in 1984 and

former Collingwood grand final player Chris Perry won the job in 1985 and took the club in a new direction.

The club has since retraced its historic roots and adopted the Diggers nickname as it continues a rebuilding phase.

The club changed its name to Horsham United and adopted a new theme song but continued to play as the Tigers.

The club still boasts three Wimmera League FL individual record holders - Phil Bunn for his 10 goals in a senior grand final; Stephen Edgerton for most senior games with 425 and Brad Miller, most goals in a game with 22.

Bunn returned to coach and in 1988 took the infant club to a senior premiership, kicking a still-standing record 10 goals in the grand final against Warracknabeal at Dimboola.

The club was back as a force in 1994, playing in grand finals under Harvey Lang including a 1995 thriller against Stawell.

Horsham sailing season winds up Horsham Yacht Club will have its presentation night at its Green Lake clubhouse on May 25.

Competition at the lake last month closed the club’s sailing season. Competition feature two heats of the season finale in 17kph wind gusting to 30kph.

Sailing will resume in the first week of October with the Victorian Inland Championships for OK dinghies.

Results: Heat one, Steve Marcroft in Mirror 1, Rick Walker in Paper Tiger 2; Lachie Walker in Hobie Turbo 3; heat two, Mark Ubergang in Laser Radial 1, Marcrofts 2, Anthony Schellens in Paper Tiger 3.

Other notable players include five-time club best and fairest Mal Adams who represented the league 19 times.

Bunn, now recruiting manager for Adelaide Crows in the AFL, will be one of the few apologies on Saturday night.

Glenelg angling

Horsham Angling Club members will take on the bream and mulloway of the Glenelg River in a competition from Pritchard’s Camping Ground on May 18 and 19.

Officials will take entries between 5pm and 6.30pm next Thursday at Sawyer Park clubrooms in Horsham.

Adam Carter and Josh Beddison are a potent goal-kicking duo for the Kees while Grant Schultz’s height across half forward will give Kalkee midfielders options and plenty of headaches for Rupanyup defenders led by Kevin Wyatt and Daniel Schaper In the last fortnight Rupanyup, led by Drew and Matt Tyler and David Lang, has been playing good football.

Drew Tyler provides plenty of pace across half forward and Kalkee’s Zavier Hobbs will probably get first crack and negating his influence.

Elder brother Matt Tyler has been providing a target inside the forward 50 and without Kevin Mills in the side it might be Ben Hobbs, with help from Josh Mibus, to stop the big forward laying his mitts on the ball.

It will be Kalkee’s midfield that will win the Kees the game. Boasting more class and depth than the Panthers the Kalkee side should be able to get on top after half time. Steve Schultz hasn’t hit top form yet so he is due for a big one and with Tim Wade, Paul Christian, Brendan McDonald and Simon Hobbs rotating through the centre the Panther opposition in Nathan Sasche, Glenn Wyatt and Noel Jorgenson will need to work overtime.

Big games continue to confront NoradjuhaQuantong every week and this week the Bombers host premiership favourite Edenhope-Apsley and it will take a huge effort to cause one of the upsets of the season.

Edenhope Apsley co-coach James Dixon hit top form last week, slotting home seven goals and finding someone to nullify him will be high on the list of priorities for the Bombers brain trust.

Noradjuha-Quantong boasts plenty of firepower up forward through Shane Oakley, Adam Hall and Jarred Combe, but need to limit the ball-winning abilities of the Saints’ midfielders

It will be interesting to see if the athletic assistant coach Tim Friend plays deep in defence and takes it upon himself to lead from the front.

Laharum’s key forwards are getting good supply from the likes of Zac Price, Daniel Easson and Robbie Miller and if their form holds the Demons will enter next week’s huge clash against Kalkee full of confidence.

Roos back Harrow-Balmoral will return to the winners’ circle by accounting for a dogged Pimpinio outfit at Balmoral this week.

After a tough first quarter last week the Roos were able to hold onto the ball with greater effect.

Pimpinio celebrated its first win of the season and will be hoping Dylan Baker can maintain his form in the key forward spot after an unfortunate training injury to Sam Turmine.

Edenhope-Apsley’s backline, led by the unheralded Chris Oliver and youngster Jeremy Kealy, have won the points against opponents in most games this year and the Bombers will need to make sure they hit targets in the forward arc to stay in the contest. Unfortunately for the Bombers they will be on the end of a horror month of defeats.

On the trot Swifts will bounce back into finals contention by winning their third on the trot against a struggling Taylors Lake.

The Baggies have too much speed across the ground and with Paul Hanns, Scott Carey, Ashley Cowen and Sean Mantell using it to telling effect the Lakers backline led by Luke Robertson and Brett Monaghan will again feel the pressure.

Jason Weir and Aaron Lewis will make the Baggies work hard around the stoppages but neither are fleet of foot and when the ball spills from the contest will need the likes of Craig Britten and Tim Wright to cover the Baggies’ speedier outside runners.

The Baggies will look at this game as a chance to build an ordinary percentage, which languishes about the 50 mark and well short of other sides chasing a finals spot.

Impossible Natimuk will make it three losses in a row as the Rams fail to contain Laharum’s big forwards in Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla.

The Roos’ half back line of Chris Heath, Will Staude and Luke Merryfull will provide plenty of run and Tiger forwards Ryan Ellis, Cam Ellis and Baker will need to chase hard and pressure the Roos defenders if they are to create turnovers.

Pimpinio has plenty of young runners but need to be able to maintain the speed and pressure for the full game.

Brent Penny notched up game 300 for the Roos last week and the full forward will be looking to return to his best form. If results go their way the Roos might be sitting inside the five after this weekend.

Although it’s only early in the season every win is crucial.

Undefeated Glenthompson-Dunkeld, which sits second on the ladder, hosts Ararat this weekend.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld’s most re-

cent win was at the expense of Caramut. The Rams led at every change and were up by five goals at half time before eventually winning the game by three goals.

Christopher McLeod was the main contributor in front of goals booting five, while the other remaining goals were shared between five players.

Russell Macgugan along with Lachlan Rogerson were among Glenthompson-Dunkeld’s best, with Daniel McArthur also providing plenty of support.

redemption in a bid to get back on the winners’ list.

Last week Brent Bulger was Ararat’s only multiple goal scorer in its 53-point loss to Lismore-Derrinallum.

Ararat will have to be at its best to even come close to the rampaging Glenthompson-Dunkeld team.

In a replay of last year’s grand final, Penshurst defeated the winless Tatyoon by 12 goals.

Tatyoon stayed with the Bombers until half time but were blown away by a 12-goal-to-two-goal second half.

James Delahunty and Christopher Eales were on target in front of goals, kicking five and four respectively, which also saw them both win beston-grounds honours for Penshurst.

Penshurst will be keen to continue winning when it travels to Caramut this weekend.

Caramut’s loss to GlenthompsonDunkeld was its third for the season with the side having beaten Woorndoo-Mortlake in the first round.

Swift Saints turning up the heat WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

here is plenty to like about Horsham Saints in Wimmera Football League this year and this weekend Ararat will find out why.

The Saints are tough, swift and on song and might well emerge as a major premiership challenger if they can maintain their winning formula across the lines.

What was immediately obvious last week as the Saints methodically dismantled Warrack Eagles’ running game was how good they were in the clinches.

A quick analysis of 50-50 ball winners in what was a relatively dour struggle revealed plenty.

The Saints might well have an enviable edge this season simply with tough-nut personnel who revel in close-in conditions. There is considerable muscle and intent in the clinches.

Few opposition players would enjoy fighting for a loose ball against the likes of Nathan Clough and Bernie Ward in the middle or Phil Butsch and Dennis Adams at either end of the ground, Garry Hallam mopping up out of defence or Gavin Kelm running from the square. And when there is a lot of heat in the coalface the boiler produces a lot of steam.

Throw in key-position firepower of Heath Watson and Steve Cameron, in-form ruckman Mick Rowe and deftly talented Jacob Cooke-Harrison, Darcy Tucker, Addison Milner and Jesse Hatcher and it’s not a bad footy formula.

Ararat was seven goals off the pace against Minyip-Murtoa last outing and after an impressive six-goal start managed only a solitary goal for the rest of the contest.

The Rats will enjoy being back at home but will be lamenting injury worries and must quickly regroup for a tough game.

While Ararat is on the hunt for an early scalp and it is always hard to beat the Rats at home, Horsham Saints will be too strong.

Brim clash Earlier in the day at the southern Mallee environs of Brim, Warrack Eagles will attempt to regroup against a potent Dimboola.

The Eagles appeared relatively light

and small across the lines against the Saints last week and were almost bullied out of the contest.

The Eagles look at their best when they find space to run and need the likes of Jarred Martin, Liam Stewart and Luke Kemp to push into space and exploit opportunities presented

by Jay McGrath, Peter Weir and Dale Hinkley.

Goal-kicking opportunities were far and few between during stop-start Eagles forays into attack last week, something Dimboola will also exploit if it happens again.

Night game Minyip-Murtoa, meanwhile, will turn its attention to a big night game against Horsham RSL at Horsham City Oval.

This game is up for grabs and although the Warriors are home at Central Park, Nhill will sneak across the line.

The Diggers will surprise the Burras and cause an upset win.

Nhill would have been licking its wounds after coming off a big second-best to the Roos but will re-set for a clash against Stawell, which ran into a determined Horsham last outing.

Cam Kimber will kick goals if the Warriors can get the ball forward enough, especially if on-baller Zac Marrow produces another big game and if the side can reproduce highquality tackling pressure.

The contest is likely to feature ripping individual battles, none more so than if Minyip-Murtoa’s Clinton Midgley lines up on Kye Chapple.

Stawell might be guilty of the same after looking okay against the reigning premier in the first quarter but falling away as the game gained momentum.

The Diggers are using the occasion to celebrate 30 years in Wimmera League and with Damian Cameron providing a new level of on-field leadership to a relatively new-look list will serious challenge the Burras.

Damian Cupido turned it on for Ouyen United with a 17-goal haul in an 83-point win over Jeparit-Rainbow while Woomelang-Lascelles proved too strong for Walpeup-Underbool.

Jeparit-Rainbow hosts the VCFL game of the month against Hopetoun this weekend.

Essendon legend Terry Daniher will be the guest speaker at the match.

This week is set to be another great round of footy as all teams look to work their way into the top four.

Ouyen United travels to Beulah to take on the Blues with the Demons in fantastic form with star players Cupido and Laurence Angwin dominating.

Beulah has its own stars though with Micah Buchanan endlessly racking up disposals through the middle while Dennis Redden has been powerful at centre half forward.

Cupido The big question for the Blues is, who will play on Cupido? If he spends most of his time deep forward then Luke Spasic will most likely get the job.

Spasic has been in good form this season, with his strength in one-onone contests a major facet of his game.

Cupido will be hoping his midfielders can give him quick, direct delivery so he can get out on the lead.

Tyler Lehmann will be looking for another big game for the Blues, while Scott Smith and Micah Buchanan will take control of the clearance work.

This is set up to be a fantastic match, but the depth of Beulah should prevail and provide a 24-point win.

VCFL match Jeparit-Rainbow will welcome Hopetoun to Jeparit in the VCFL game of the month.

Both teams are yet to record a win this season, and will be looking to haul themselves from the bottom of the ladder.

Hopetoun will need Deek Roberts and Pat Purcell to have big games while Heath Clugston and Josh McCleary will look to give their fans a win on their home turf. Luke Carr has been in fantastic form for the Devils at both ends of the ground, while Cade Wellington has been playing good consistent footy.

The Lakers keep showing improvement but are unable to keep it together for four quarters while Hopetoun have been struggling with depth.

This should be a good, tight game that could go either way. I think Hopetoun are better than how they have

been playing, and will have a threegoal win to kick-start its season.

Walpeup-Underbool has fallen from grace and won’t find it any easier when it comes up against a strong Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers outfit.

Champion The Tigers have been in fantastic form so far this year and suffered only one loss. The Roos have lost two in a row and will be keen to make amends for their poor form. Wade Champion needs to fire but he will watched heavily by Stephen Lyons who controls back half for the Tigers.

Bill Barry will be a big loss for Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers, but they should have the depth to cover him.

Walpeup-Underbool will need big games from Mathew Palmer, Chris Chubb and Kane Munro while the Tigers will once again look to Colin Durie to lead from the front, while Tom Summerhayes and Matt Elliot will provide a terrific support.

This will be another cracking game, and will go down to the wire. The home-ground advantage will get the Roos over the line by 10 points.

VW chief reveals future priorities V

olkswagen has provided insight into its next-generation drivetrains, with a 10-speed dual-clutch transmission and a high-performance diesel with an electric turbocharger well under development.

Europe’s largest car-maker has also signalled that it will continue to put its substantial weight behind plugin hybrid and natural gas-powered vehicles as medium-term solutions to achieving strict emissions targets.

By using its vast global footprint, and industry-leading levels of commonality between model lines, the company claims it can more efficiently spread vehicle electrification – starting with plug-ins – across a host of segments, thereby helping the industry “make the breakthrough” to critical mass.

Therefore, expect the German powerhouse to deploy these developments across much of its portfolio, including vehicles badged Skoda, Audi and Porsche. The group’s entire global range will soon share a mere handful of adjustable modular platforms.

Speaking at the International Motor Symposium in Vienna, Volkswagen AG chairman Martin Winterkorn gave the motoring world an unusual sneak-peek into its future plans.

A diverse strategy will see the company continue to invest in numerous drive technologies, with the overarching objective of lowering the CO2 emissions of its European newcar fleet to 95 grams per kilometre by 2020.

Probably of less importance in terms of overall volume in the near future, but nevertheless crucial for brand perception and longer-term development, is Volkswagen’s seeming emphasis on plug-in hybrid technology rather than pure electric vehicles.

Of most significance is confirmation that the company will add more ratios to its DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, with the onus on reduced fuel use. More ratios mean fewer revs per minute, and therefore lower fuel use.

“In the medium term, the first choice in terms of alternative drive systems is plug-in hybrid technology,” the company said in a statement.

Since the company’s current-generation six- and seven-speed DSG units are in use across much of its global range – including Audi, which has versions labelled S-tronic – expect to see the 10-speed version in a host of future models.

Several automotive giants consider extra ratios a crucial way to cut fuel use, with arch-rivals Ford and General Motors actually teaming up to develop their own 10-speed unit, and Korean giant Hyundai doing the same.

Meantime, despite the gap between petrol and diesel engine fuel use narrowing significantly in recent years, Volkswagen clearly sees enough upside to invest in a high-performance, next-generation family of oil-burners.

“The Volkswagen Group’s first plug-in hybrids, the Porsche Panamera and Audi A3 e-tron, will shortly be going into full production. They will be followed by the Golf and many other models, such as the Passat, Audi A6 and Porsche Cayenne.”

Finally, Volkswagen AG will persist with its developments in natural gas vehicles – potentially pertinent given Australia’s vast reserves.

ord says it will sit and wait to see what technology rolls out before introducing its first electric car to the Australian market.

The car-maker’s European division has rolled out a prototype Fiesta city car featuring low-cost in-wheel electric motors.

The eWheelDrive system, developed in partnership with German engineering company Schaeffler, produces a staggering 700Nm of torque — about the same as a high-performance twin-turbocharged V8 — almost from idle.

The electric motors’ compact packaging, which allows them to fit inside the Fiesta’s rear wheels, also means more scope is available for the carmaker to shrink the size of a two-seat version of the electric vehicle to about that of a Smart Fortwo.

Ford Australia brand communications manager Neil McDonald told GoAuto that the electric vehicle market here was still evolving, and while the car-maker had not yet made any firm decisions, it was watching with interest.

“Unlike Europe and Japan, Australians generally driver longer distances, often in more sparsely populated areas,” Mr McDonald said.

“So EV range anxiety is a tangible concern for customers, where it may not be in other markets with shorter distances and an adequate number of charging outlets.

“Certainly the EV infrastructure is something that’s being looked at by various local governments in Australia and how EVs fit into the Australian urban landscape is something we’ll continue to look

at,” he said.

Mr McDonald said another key consideration for Australian owners was the purchase cost, particularly with private buyers, and even early adopters. “... Any business case for an EV has to be right,” Mr McDonald said.

“In the light and small car segments many customers are first-time buyers too, so price is a key consideration.”

Australia is set to become the maker of one of the world’s most powerful sedans as HSV prepares to unleash its Gen-F range of muscle-cars.

The Holden tuner is expected to announce a limited-run GTS flagship powered by a circa 430kW supercharged 6.2-litre V8, giving it the means to out-punch far more expensive luxury Euros such as the BMW M5.

GoAuto first got wind that HSV would take the supercharging route last October when we spotted an engineering mule in Victoria emitting the distinctive whine of a supercharger under acceleration.

At the time, we reported a natural fit would be the force-fed 6.2 ‘LSA’ V8 used in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V, where it respectively produces 432kW/754Nm or 415kW/747Nm. HSV is expected to opt for the higher end of the LSA’s output. The other important set of numbers is cost, with the limited-run GTS flagship set to cost around $100,000 when it hits showrooms in the third quarter of this year.

All will come to light on May 15 – around one month before the cars go on sale.

HSV is keeping quiet on full details until then, but has ac-

knowledged that some media speculation hits the mark.

The projected price is a cool $15,000 more than the 25th Anniversary edition launched at the Sydney motor show last October – but for that customers are expected to get a road-legal sedan almost as powerful as a V8 Supercar.

And it looks downright affordable compared with HSV’s previous power record, the $155,500 W427 limited edition of 2008 that packed a 375kW/640Nm 7.0-litre engine. Just 138 out of a proposed 427 examples of this car were built.

Nissan trims EV N

issan is looking to add some charge to Australia’s flat-lining electric vehicle market after slashing the price of its Leaf EV for the second time in five months.

The Japanese company says the new price point – $20,000 less than the Holden Volt plug-in hybrid – is intended to ‘broaden the appeal’ of electric cars by grabbing the attention of buyers ‘who might have been put off by the comparatively higher purchase price typically associated’.

Nissan will sweeten the deal with a special repayment plan, charging $85 per week with a low comparison rate of 1.9 per cent over three years – provided customers shell out a $10,000 deposit.

The latest car-maker to join Australia’s capped price servicing movement is Suzuki, which has introduced a five-year scheme on all new car purchases from May 1.

Exceptions include dieselpowered Grand Vitara SUVs and cars purchased in Queensland and northern New South Wales, where a separate distributor handles Suzuki sales.

The pioneering pure electric runabout is now available to private buyers for just $39,990 drive-away, down from $46,990.

This latest price cut follows a circa-$8000 discount introduced last December, meaning the Leaf is about $15,000 cheaper now than at launch in June last year.

First-time drivers of the Nissan Leaf are surprised by its fun-to-drive nature and owners never seem to grow tired of not having to buy petrol.

“The Leaf should be on the shopping list of every smallcar buyer,” he said.

Meanwhile, GoAuto understands government and notfor-profit fleets will be charged substantially less, with scaled fleet pricing believed to start below $30,000.

Nissan Australia media and public relations manager Peter Fadeyev told GoAuto the company was ‘particularly keen for the Nissan Leaf to secure a stronger foothold in the fleet market’.

Scheduled servicing for the Alto and Swift light car is capped at $199, with the 24 month/40,000km and 48 month/80,000km intervals at $289.

The cost of maintaining larger models including the SX4 small car, Kizashi midsize sedan and APV van are capped at $249, with the 24 month/40,000km and 48 month/80,000km intervals costing $295.

For the Jimny and petrol Grand Vitara the cost is $269, with the 24 month/40,000km and 48 month/80,000km intervals at $299.

The scheme includes an extended warranty bonus, which ups the coverage from three to five years.

SWIFT RESPONSE: Suzuki has responded to the current capped-price servicing trend in Australia by offering it on all models except diesel variants of the Grand Vitara SUV.

Suzuki Australia communications manager Andrew Ellis told GoAuto the company is still working on a capped price servicing plan for the diesel Grand Vitara, but it will affect few customers due to the small numbers sold.

He said Suzuki Australia is in talks with Suzuki Queensland to roll the servicing scheme out in the sunshine state.

Capped price servicing is now offered by several carmakers in Australia, including Toyota, Holden, Hyunda, Ford, Kia, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Renault, Peugeot, Opel and Citroen.
