He caught the fish, using yabby bait, in the first half hour of the competition, and had to wait the remainder of the day before being declared the winner. Cancer centre pledge BY DEAN LAWSON
M
ember for Lowan Emma Kealy believes the State Government has an obligation to match any federal money Prime Minister Tony Abbott pledges for a new Wimmera Cancer Centre in Horsham tomorrow.
Ms Kealy said she would lobby the State Government to ‘come to the party’ and help build the $3-million centre. “If the announcement is for major funding for this project
then the State Government has to match the amount put forward. This is all about real benefits to people,” she said. The Weekly Advertiser believes Mr Abbott, who will join Member for Mallee Andrew Broad at a fundraising breakfast, will announce a $1-million grant for the centre. Staff members at Mr Broad’s Mildura office fell short of confirming or denying the figure but agreed that Mr Abbott would make a major announcement during his visit. Wimmera Health Care Group
Foundation is committing a minimum of $250,000 for the project, leaving a $1-million shortfall to complete the centre. Wimmera health-industry leaders want to build the new facilities, to bring Horsham oncology, dialysis and community palliative-care services into one purpose-built centre, by June, 2017. The development would complement existing services and open the door for more specialised oncology treatment in the region Ms Kealy said the project was about providing Wimmera
people with access to equitable health services and instilling greater confidence in the region’s ability to meet demands. “The Wimmera has one of the highest incidents of cancer in the state and we need to make sure we have health services in place locally that can help our people when they are going through very difficult physical and emotional times,” she said. Wimmera Health Care Group chief executive Chris Scott said the Grampians health region, which included the Wimmera, had the lowest five-year cancer
survival rate in Victoria. “One of the main reasons is a lack of access to appropriate services,” he said. “There’s anecdotal evidence out there suggesting that people aren’t accessing treatment because it’s ‘all too hard’. We want to improve that access.” Mr Scott said figures showed that 970 people were bypassing Horsham for treatment and demand was growing at 13 percent a year. “The facility we have planned is very patient-centred – it’s about having a wellness cen-
tre providing support therapies that help people on cancer journeys with stronger opportunities to get through that phase,” he said. Mr Abbott, who has previously visited the region in opposition, is the first Prime Minister to visit Horsham in many years. Wimmera Health Care Group officials have travelled to Ballarat and Melbourne exploring design and lay-out options for the Wimmera project.
