The winery’s owner, Treasury Wine Estates, announced in October last year it would cease wine-making at Great Western and close its Seppelt cellar door by June 2016 as part of a restructure of its Australian and New Zealand operations. Great Western Enterprises will take over the running of the cellar door, along with tours of the winery’s un-

The plan includes using the town’s wine and gold-mining heritage to boost tourism and economic activity. “Money from the tours will help market Great Western as a wine village, which will be great for the community,” he said. “Seppelt has always been synonymous with Great Western. “I grew up in Ararat and spend my time living between Great Western

and Melbourne. I like to consider myself a local and I’m excited about this new chapter for Seppelt and what it will do for the community.” Northern Grampians Mayor Murray Emerson said the council was thrilled to see the partnership come to fruition. “We are very excited to see this important tourism attraction getting the attention it so rightly deserves, and we congratulate the Great Western community, Seppelt and Danial on coming to this agreement,” he said. “We look forward to working with the Great Western Future Plan committee and Danial to progress opportunities associated with this great news.” At the time of the closure announce-

He said TWE’s agreement with Great Western Enterprises showed its commitment to the Seppelt brand. “We are looking forward to working with Danial, who has demonstrated business acumen, a strong local connection, and great enthusiasm for Seppelt,” he said. The Great Western winery was founded by Joseph Best in 1865 and acquired by Benno Seppelt in 1918.
