New tourist loop BY SARAH SCULLY

W

immera councils have renewed a push for a ring road around Grampians National Park designed to boost tourism and showcase the region’s producers.

Northern Grampians, Horsham, Ararat and Southern Grampians councils will work on the Grampians Way Ring Road project, which comprises a fully

sealed tourist route linking the park to outlying towns. The project was the subject of a scoping study completed in 2012. Northern Grampians chief executive Justine Linley said representatives from each council and Grampians Tourism met earlier this month to gauge whether there was enough interest to proceed with the development.

“It was the first time we have come together in several years. The basis of the meeting was to discuss how seriously we were ready to commit to the project,” she said. “We are still in the early stages, but the interest is definitely there. Each of the councils will go away and look at what they can do towards the project, such as putting some money aside in this year’s budget.”

The scoping study provided background and research into potential benefits of a ring road, along with route options for each of the four municipalities. Several options were canvassed, with the study identifying a 285-kilometre preferred route. The loop takes in Roses Gap, Laharum, Glenisla, Cavendish, Dunkeld, Glenthompson, Moyston and Pomonal.

The total cost of the development was estimated at $8.7-million, including $6.5-million to upgrade roads in Horsham Rural City and $2.2-million for supporting infrastructure such as picnic sites, lookout areas, signs and intersection treatments. Mrs Linley said the $6.5-million road cost estimate covered the sealing of two roads. Continued page 3
