t just five years old Horsham youngster Kobe Davidson has had more surgical procedures on his heart than years he has been alive. The bubbly pre-schooler was born with a complex cardiac problem called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a serious heart condition where the left side of the heart is poorly developed and unable to function. Kobe has had open-heart surgery six times, and faced a variety of complications, none more serious then the stroke he suffered during his fourth procedure at only 13 months old. The stroke left Kobe paralysed down his left side of his body, which resulted in the loss of what had been freshly learnt abilities to crawl, walk and speak. The lives of Kobe’s parents Tania Howard and Gary Davidson changed dramatically with the realisation that how they cared for their son had changed forever. Not only was he living with a heart condition that had no cure, he was about to go through life living with a disability. Tania said specialists gave her and Gary the option of Kobe going through at least three open-heart surgical procedures to reconstruct his heart to give him a chance at life. “As his parents, Gary and I knew this is what we had to do. Our job was to give our boy the best quality of life we could,” she said. “We understood that the journey wasn’t going to be easy or straightforward. We knew we had to put our trust in an amazing medical team at the Royal Children’s Hospital and we knew that together we had to become a strong team.” Tania spent two months with Kobe in a rehabilitation program at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne learning

how to care for her son. Kobe then began an intensive program with Horsham therapists specialising in physio, speech and occupational therapy and early intervention. Due to the complexity of his heart condition, Kobe occasionally met his therapy with difficulty. The therapy often left him fatigued and breathless. The amazing result the Horsham therapy team has been able to achieve is reflected in Kobe’s progress. He has again learnt how to sit, crawl, walk and talk, and most recently has even started to run and climb. Many take these simple skills for granted, but for young Kobe, they showed that a determination and willingness to live life to the fullest could help him overcome almost anything. Tania said she and Gary were grateful for the services Wimmera Health Care Group and

Noah’s Ark Early Intervention had provided. “Kobe’s sessions are about having fun, with opportunities for him to practice his skills in a safe and controlled environment and using resources that are appropriate to his age and needs,” she said. ”We are so grateful for the service they can provide for Kobe here in Horsham, and for getting us to where we are today.”
Happiness
As a media representative at the Horsham hospital on assignment for The Weekly Advertiser I was privileged to see the children who are participating in rehabilitation through the healthcare group. I couldn’t help but notice the happiness they all seemed to share. Here were young kids faced with some of life’s most difficult problems and yet they looked like they were on top of the world. These kids knew what it was to live, to smile, to laugh and have fun but also to
let nothing stop them from what they wanted to achieve. The strong bond that Kobe shares with his parents and siblings has helped him blossom into an excited, and enthusiastic youngster who is unlikely to ever give up on anything. The courage Tania and Gary have shown to push through and provide their son with a great life is nothing short of a miracle. When they see Kobe laughing, smiling and playing, their hearts smile and they know they have made the right choices.. People can take a lesson from Kobe and realise that the key to life is to live it to its absolute fullest; to celebrate every day we share with our families and friends and to always show determination and spirit when faced with personal obstacles. Tania left me with a final thought that summed up Kobe’s existence in this world. She said: “Kobe came into this world fighting, and he has never given up”.

Different take on Cinderella
Horsham College will present its pantomime production of the fairy-tale classic Cinderella at Wesley Performing Arts Centre in Horsham starting tomorrow night. Teacher Brandi Galpin said Cinderella as a pantomime was ‘a riot of slapstick humour, cross-dressing, well-known tunes, outlandish
costumes and some very bad jokes.’ Tickets are available from Horsham College administration building and at the Wesley arts centre on the performance nights. Shows are at 8pm tomorrow, Friday and Saturday nights and 2pm on Sunday. Adults will pay $18 and concession tickets are $12.
Pain clinic plan in Labor policy
L
abor candidate for Mallee Lydia Senior will push for ‘multi-disciplinary’ pain-management medical clinics in Horsham, Swan Hill and Mildura if she wins in next month’s Federal Election. She would also press hard for new mental-health facilities, also in Horsham, Swan Hill and Mildura, as part of a school-based program. Ms Senior, while acknowledging that the state controlled the public hospital system, outlined what she would ‘sink her teeth into’ as part of her Mallee health policy. “Future state and federal governments, should be working much closer together on important health issues that impact on local communities,” she said. Ms Senior will also push for

a comprehensive regional oncology service, 24-hour care services for vulnerable endstage dementia patients, an expansive specialist autism and developmental service and an increase in services for the prevention and early intervention of type 1 and 2 diabetes and the provision of support services to help people with the condition. Ms Senior said she acknowledged the work of service providers across the region and
looked forward to working with them on her proposals. She said she had identified the service gaps through comprehensive community consultation during frequent visits across the region. “I look forward to making these projects a reality,” she said. Senior has also released an electorate infrastructure policy. Regional infrastructure development is also high on Liberal candidate Chris Crewther’s agenda. Mr Crewther, the only Wimmera candidate in the electorate, has been busy campaigning across the electorate and has also been investigating mobile-phone coverage blackspots. He has passed on his findings to Liberal Party communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull.
Exhibition offers insight
A Seeking Refuge in Nhill photographic exhibition will feature at Melbourne Immigration Museum until January 12 next year. The exhibition, which started as a Wimmera Development Association’s Settlement Grants project and launched in Nhill earlier this year, supports the integration of Karen refugees from Myanmar into the Wimmera community. Settlement Worker, Robyn Murphy said the exhibition of black and white images by Wimmera photographic artist Melissa Powell celebrated an emerging cultural diversity in Nhill, highlighted by the story of the town’s Karen community. “Melissa’s national and international experience has produced images that show the professional and personal relationships shared between the Karen and the ‘locals’ of Nhill, Ms Murphy said. Karen community members told their stories with the help of Karen interpreter Plaw G, while
Hindmarsh Shire community development coordinator Katherine Colbert summarised details for storyboards accompanying selected photographs. The movement of the Karen people to the Wimmera has occurred over the past three to four years, largely due to the need for workers at Luva-duck at Nhill. The employment of Karen has enabled Luv-aduck to increase production and business growth. About 120 Karen people live in Nhill, 30 Karen students are enrolled in schools and kindergartens, 60 are employed at Luv-a-duck and another 10 working in other businesses such as cafes, a supermarket and a machinery maintenance firm. Ms Murphy said Seeking Refuge in Nhill provided insight and appreciation of how a small rural Victorian town had become a home for a community of Karen refugees.

immera trade apprentices are again putting their skills to the test in international WorldSkills championships.
Fresh after Australian representative Tim Taylor from Ararat won a WorldSkills gold medal in Germany, another crop of budding young tradesmen and women are showing off their talents at an initial regional level. WorldSkills Wimmera competition for hairdressing apprentices was in Horsham on Monday and a similar competition for Wimmera automotive apprentices will unfold on August 22. The hairdressing contest, involving six students from Horsham, Nhill and Donald, was at the University of Ballarat’s Horsham Unistyle Salon and six automotive apprentices will test their skills at the university’s automotive building. interested in challenging their skills and ambitions against other young people in the region, country and around the world. The automotive students have to complete five tasks against the clock and each other. Tasks include problem diagnoses in engine management and servicing and general roadworthy requirements. Competition is from 8.30am to 5pm and family, friends and work colleagues can attend.
Last Monday, hairdressing students had to complete three individual tasks, which included men’s and women’s haircuts, colouring and styling and long-hair designs. Students at the university’s Horsham campus have a busy few months ahead. Hairdressing students will showcase their work at a Vocational Education Training in Schools Hair and Beauty Show and Catwalk on August 28.
Natalie Okely from the Horsham campus Industry Skills Centre said the events were great opportunities for the broader community to see how talented young people were advancing in developing industry skills and knowledge. “We’re very proud of the students. These events help them develop confidence in themselves and helps open doors for them in the future,” she said.
It’s not a new fire levy, it’s a fairer fire levy. On 1 July 2013, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the Victorian Government is replacing the old fire services levy with a fairer system. Rather than being added to insurance premiums, the levy will now be collected with council rates. This means all property owners contribute a fair share to the Country Fire Authority or the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The levy is a fixed charge of $100 for residential properties and $200 for non-residential properties, plus a variable charge based on the property’s capital improved value. All funds will go towards supporting Victoria’s fire services. GST and stamp duty charged on the old levy have been removed and, for the first time, eligible pensioners and veterans will receive a $50 concession. These reforms will save households and business around $100 million a year.

Pain of road trauma changes life forever
T
By DEAN LAWSON
he amount of hurt the sudden death of a young person on our roads is almost indescribable.
The pain that races hot on the heels of tragic news rocks the foundations of normality. It destroys a sense of stability, cripples confidence and eventually evolves into a dull persistent ache that even time struggles to cure. This pain changes the world of some people forever. It tests the resolve of families to the core, asks probing questions of friends and creates a chain reaction of community melancholy. Here in the Wimmera-Mallee
EDITORIAL we have become all too familiar with fatal road incidents. Sometimes months barely go by without news of a tragedy and in some circumstances we never know exactly what has happened. In tightly knit communities where everyone knows everyone else, news and hurt spread like a bushfire and many cases clamp a social dampener on an entire town or district. Often, it is hard not to know people or families involved in serious road trauma. This can lead to a depressive feeling that a district, town or region is

subject to some form a jinx. Or course we sit in the middle of a major highway fatigue zone but statistics invariably reveal that road tragedy is indiscriminate. Authorities work overtime to push the message about the dangers on our roads. Speed, fatigue, alcohol and drugs and carelessness all help make up a recipe for disaster. You can also throw in driver arrogance, impatience, boredom and ambivalence and on rare occasions even intent. Weather and road conditions and an increase in traffic also play their part. We can’t afford to stop pushing the message that the simple

car, despite its wonderful contribution to society and progress, is deadly. It is probably the most dangerous piece of machinery on the planet. Mums and dads handing over the car keys to their teenage offspring have every right to feel nervous. They should also make no apologies for a methodically pedantic approach to driver instruction. A simple lesson learnt on L-plates might ultimately save a life or lives. Perhaps another message emerging from these tragedies is that we should never take our loved ones, extended families or close friends for granted. Life is short so cherish what it has to offer.
Volunteering legend Businesses are finalists
Wimmera Volunteering Recognition Awards celebrate the community contribution of individual groups and organisations. To recognize their community work, The Weekly Advertiser is providing a regular snapshot of the awards’ nine finalists. This week we feature Life Achievement Award category finalist Bill McCann of Dimboola. Mr McCann, a Wimmera sporting legend as the 1960 Stawell Gift winner, has also been a Country Fire Authority volunteer for more than 60 years. He has been Dimboola brigade captain, lieutenant, communications officer and firefighter. These days Mr McCann takes care of communication duties at the Dimboola station base and passes on knowledge to new brigade members.

through succession I’d like to be armed with all the necessary knowledge to tackle new challenges. “Our farm is run under a notill, controlled-traffic system and by better understanding biodynamic farming I might find a way to incorporate it into our system.” Mrs Dunstan said the challenge would be in maintaining and ultimately improving yields to maintain competiveness as
the farm underwent change. “I also hope to better understand the cereal and legume produce sold under biodynamic accreditation and what legal requirements are attached to these and even what processing exemptions they may in terms of chemical additives,” she said. “Ultimately I would like to explore ways to value-add grain grown biodynamically on mine, and potentially other farmers’ properties.”

Variety Dick Smith Bash ‘Bashers’ will use the August 30 stopover to visit Horsham West Primary School and present a gift of specialised play equipment for special needs children. The Bash is not a race or a rally but more of a drive in the Outback including like-minded money-raising enthusiasts ‘driving the miles for the smiles’. This year’s Variety Dick Smith Bash will depart from Bankstown on August 22 and finish at Ballarat on August 31, with pit stops at 17 regional and remote centres across NSW, SA, Queensland
and Victoria throughout a 4425-kilometre adventure. An well as the colour the Bash brings to each centre, the Bashers deliver much-needed resources including sporting, play or special needs-medical equipment to regional schools. The annual event has raised more than $115-million for children kids in need. All vehicles in the Bash must be pre-1974 models and this year’s fleet includes vehicles spanning three decades from 1959. The range of vehicles includes cars, ambulances, buses and even fire trucks. The oldest car in the fleet is a 1959 Ford Ranch wagon; while a 1964 Chico Roll-themed Wolseley 2480 MK2 is proving the most enduring,
having survived the rough and tumble of 25 Bash events. Two vehicles set to delight the kids include a 1972 Bedford ice cream van loaded with soft-serve ice-cream to be served to kids along the way and a 1965 XP Ford Falcon adorned with Nerf blasters and a crew looking forward to ambushing kids by blasting them with fun. Other classic cars hitting the road are two minis, a Volkswagen Beetle, two Chevrolet Belairs, an Austin ute and a 1974 Ford F100 ‘Bash’ ambulance. Mercedes fans have a big treat in store with 12 Mercedes in the fleet this year. Die-hard Holden and Ford fans won’t be disappointed either when 36 highly decorated Holdens and 32 festooned Fords roll into town.

Pay attention to ill animals
This last fortnight in the Animal Aid clinic there seems to have been an onslaught of animals with unhappy bellies. We’ve had a large number of pets presenting with vomiting. There was one boy who was very ill indeed. He’d been losing weight and vomiting for weeks, and had very painful abdomen. An ultrasound revealed he’d eaten a blanket and it had been lodged in his stomach for some time After five hours of surgery the cloth was removed and the damage it had caused repaired. For a few days it was touch and go as to whether he would pull through, but we were happy to see him back early this week looking happy, eating, and starting to put back on the weight he’d lost. Luckily, most episodes of vomiting in dogs and cats are from minor illnesses or stomach upsets. Viruses or dietary indiscretions are two very common causes of mild, isolated stomach upsets. In these cases the pet is quite well in themselves, and the symptoms resolve quickly. More severe but still acute causes of vomiting can be related to more serious infectious causes, such as parvovirus, or obstructions of the stomach or intestines by foreign objects. Other diseases such as pancreatitis or hepatitis can also cause acute vomiting. These patients might be lethargic, have pain in the abdomen and be uninterested in food.
Lastly, there are chronic causes of vomiting. There are a huge number of diseases, which might be of concern, from digestive problems, or food intolerances through to serious issues such as kidney failure, stomach ulcers or cancer. Vomiting is one of the most common symptoms of ill health in dogs and cats, but it can be difficult to know how worried we should be when it occurs. In general, if your pet has only a small number of times, and seems otherwise well, you might feel comfortable in monitoring their symptoms for 12 to 24 hours because many will recover without veterinary treatment. However, I would recommend you have uour pet seen by a vet in any of the following circumstances: • Your pet is lethargic and uninterested in food • They cannot keep water down. • The symptoms persist for longer than 24 hours. • Your pet is not up date with their vaccinations. • You know your pet has eaten poisons, toys or other foreign objects. • The vomiting is chronic, particularly if associated with other signs such as poor appetite, diarrhoea, or weight loss. If in doubt, seek veterinary advice. A call to your clinic will let you know whether your vet would recommend a check-up. •Dr Vogt is senior veterinarian at Animal Aid in Melbourne. Pet owner amnesty follows animal audit

Ararat Rural City Council will give cat and dog owners in the municipality until the end of August to register their animals. A council audit of its domestic dog and cat database last month revealed owners had failed to register 667 dogs and 125 cats or informed the council if the animals had died. The figures showed that there are 1734 dogs and 478 cats registered in the municipality. The Domestic Animals Act, 1994, requires all dogs and cats more than three months old to be registered with Local Government and for owners to renew registration by April 10 each year. Council has issued 792 overdue registration letters to the last known address
of the owners to remind them of their obligations. Local laws Officer Ricky Bowen urged people to call the council on 5355 0200 if their animal had died. “Alternatively, if you have overlooked re-registering you animal, consider this is a timely reminder that you are not complying with the Domestic Animals Act and need to register your animal by the end of August 2013,” he said.
Amnesty
The council has assured residents, as part of an amnesty, that it will not take any action against people if they register their animals or renew their registrations by August 30. But it has warned that
would again audit its registration data base after August and then door-knock houses. If officers find any unregistered animals they will issue a $289 fine. Mr Bowen said all dogs and cats over three months old were required by legislation to be registered and microchipped with the municipality where they lived. Mr Bowen also reminded owners that they were restricted to two cats and two dogs within residential areas, and six dogs and four cats in farming areas. “If you want more you need to apply for a permit from council,” he said. People seeking further information can call the Local Laws Department on 5355 0909 or 53550911.
Cooking cupcakes for a cause Seminar exploring linkages
A group of Northern Grampians Shire Council staff members are set to ‘bake up a storm’ to raise money for the RSPCA. ‘Team Adoptable’ will be making and selling cupcakes as part of the RSPCA’s annual Cupcake Day event. Group member and council occupational health and safety officer Ashleigh Dark said team members felt passionately about the protection of animals. “We’re really excited to be taking part in Cupcake Day again. It’s a great way for us to support a cause
that is important to us and to have a bit of fun with our workmates at the same time,” she said. “The support we received last year was amazing and we’re hopeful that people will get behind us again this year and indulge in a cupcake or two for charity.” The team will sell chocolate and vanilla cupcakes will in boxes of six for $12 or individually for $2.50. People can also order gluten-free and pet-friendly cupcakes. Patrons can place orders by visiting the group’s Facebook page at www.
facebook.com/RSPCAcupcakedaystawell or by completing an order form available at many businesses in Stawell’s main street. People without cupcake craving can donate online at www.everydayhero. com.au by searching ‘Team Adoptable’ and following the prompts. Organisers have asked people order and pay for their cupcakes today. Cupcakes will be available for collection from 108 Main St on Monday between noon and 2pm. Regional business Green Eggs has donated all eggs used in the cakes.
The lesson learnt is to never give up “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar By SUJATHA UMKANTHAN
S
ome months ago, I was invited by a persistent salesperson to attend a personal development weekend.
Now I am the sort who runs miles from life coaching and not because I think I am perfect. I simply believe that change needs to start within oneself and not be prescribed by others. I also believe there is no ‘one size fits all’ overnight remedy for life’s problems. However, tired of the incessant calls, I finally gave in and said ‘yes’, more to the lure of the city and its restaurants and some ‘me’ time than any attempts at self-improvement. Life coaching is a growing trend, be it for business or sports or personal lives. Even with a fair insight into what can happen at these sessions, I was still curious to experience it first-hand.
Sujatha Umakanthan
So with a friend in tow, I arrived in Melbourne for the 8am workshop. Never a morning person, I was already resentful for losing sleep on a Saturday morning and when I saw the rather eclectic crowd, I almost chickened out. I couldn’t peg the crowd into one slot. There seemed to be people from all walks of life. From snatches of conversation I found there were some like me, coerced into the workshop. However, most were there hoping to get something out of the weekend. For the usual sceptics like me, there wasn’t anything extraordinary about the course. There was the typical overzealous coach who
made you want to covet her protein shake hoping you would experience the same energy buzz. There were the boisterous volunteers who left you more annoyed than grateful, the usual pep talks and games and the motivational clips crafted to get your tear ducts working overtime. Yes, there were all the ingredients for an inspiring and motivational weekend, including the most unimaginative catering that left one in a perpetual state of taste deprivation.
Rattled
But even hard-core scepticism gets breached and the most blinkered and narrow-minded people have their psyche rattled after such weekends. Surprisingly for me it wasn’t the emotional sweating or the cleansing rituals. My own moment of realisation dawned when I looked at people who had taken part in the weekend. Each had a story to tell, some reeking of desperation, some of addictions and others mostly of despair.
But the beauty was that they were there, turning up at a weekend to give themselves another chance, another beginning. It was their resilience, hope and belief in themselves and their optimism that they could turn things around that struck me the most. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learnt, not from the course provider but from the participants, was to never give up on one’s self. What truly matters is how far people can bounce back from setbacks. I would not write off the benefits of personal development courses. I still insist there is nothing magical or extraordinary about the sessions themselves. However such courses give us time for self-reflection and insight; the nudge we need to remind us that our lives are more than a daily grind. Most certainly, the emotional detox helps with clarity and focus to continue life’s journey. I am not a total convert yet but I believe I got more than I bargained for out of that weekend.
The 16th Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar at Edenhope next month will explore environmental ‘linkages’. Registration is open for the event at Edenhope Mechanics Institute Hall on September 5. Linkages for biodiversity occur at many levels – from small farm shelterbelts to large-scale continental biolinks and for single species for ecological communities. Environmental scientists consider all important in sustaining biodiversity.
Seminar patrons will also see how modern urban design or traditional Aboriginal practices can link to conservation. They will also see how links between botanical gardens and biodiversity can work and how big business and conservation can work together. The seminar includes a full day of presentations, a field trip to a bushland project and a dinner. More information is available on 0457 529 924 or 0408 121 118.

Country appeal snares city girl After high school, Ms Brennan devoted her time at university to completing a double degree in health science and social work, majoring in health promotion and community development. She said her ambition was to establish a career in paediatrics or communities. “I really like working with communities and I was particularly interested in paediatrics,” Ms Brennan said. “But when a short-term role became available with Rural Northwest Health at Warracknabeal I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “The more I looked into the role, the more I knew it was what I wanted because it involves project work.
Ms Brennan began work nearly four months ago as a community rehabilitative therapist and was supposed to finish when her contract expired on June 30. But another opportunity opened to work in a dual role that included her current role as well as an occupational therapist with RNH’s Community Health team. “I was only coming for a brief contract but I liked it so much I decided to stay,” she said. “Right now I’m busy covering for the occupational therapist who is on long service leave, while still conducting my own home visits. “I’m working mainly with people who are struggling to retain their memory and help-
Rural Northwest Health has taken control of its radiology department and will be providing ultrasound services from Monday. The radiology department had been under contract to Bendigo Radiology for the past few years but RNH’s executive seized an opportunity to reclaim the service and develop its accessibility. The health organisation has gained the services of Melbourne sonographer Stephen Jones who will provide ultrasound services from Warracknabeal every Monday and Friday. The group has also employed
radiographers to provide xray services on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Mr Jones will also provide the service where necessary, during his visits. Officials will monitor demand to determine how many days it will offer the service. Health group chief executive Catherine Morley said the new service would provide a unique advantage to the region. “We are bulk billing all xrays and ultrasounds so there is no gap for patients to worry about,” Ms Morley said. “And people will be able to access the services very quickly which has been a big
frustration for many Wimmera patients.” Ms Morley said Rural Northwest Health was dedicated to a long-term commitment to the services as part of its strategic plan to improve community health. “We have orchestrated an extended agreement with Mr Jones and we have dedicated an area of the new redevelopment to incorporate a firstclass radiology department,” she said. “So the service will have both longevity and stability.” People can make x-ray or ultrasound appointments by phoning 5396 1200.

Ms Brennan said she loved working in Warracknabeal. “I love the country lifestyle and I love Yarriambiack Creek. I walk around it every day. “My mum’s family are rural people so the lifestyle is not lost on me. “I’m also loving the irony because I’m a coeliac which means I’m allergic to wheat, barley, oats and rye. And here I am working in the wheat and barley capital of Australia. “I’m a bit dubious about how I’ll go come harvest time.”

It’s not just WimmeraMallee farmers, gardeners and regional water managers who are happy, but also our wildlife, none more so that than our resident frog population. Researchers noted an increase in frog activity in the region after droughtbreaking rain and floods and now, with considerable water in the catchment conditions are ideal for the amphibians. Science has long recognised frogs, which have an incredibly close physical relationship with their environment, as reliable bioindicators. If you have frogs croaking in your garden, pond or paddock, then chances are the environment is relatively healthy. Australia’s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife is encouraging Wimmera people to get involved in its free Backyard Buddies program designed to help make backyards frog-friendly.
The program provides a monthly email to enthusiasts with tips on how to make their backyards inviting and safe for native animals. A free frog-pond fact sheet and how to become a ‘buddy’ are available at website www.backyardbuddies.net.au. Frogs, as cold-blooded animals, try to avoid cold weather and in extreme conditions go into a torpor or hibernation. But with the hint of spring in the air and an unusually warm and wet July some frogs have been on the move. Foundation chief executive Susanna Bradshaw said frogs were quick to move into areas that had experienced heavy rain. “You’ll be able to tell what types of frogs are around by the sounds they make,” she said.
Insects
“Pobblebonks make a repeated banjo-like ‘plonk’ or ‘kuk-kuk’ call.” This is answered by others plonking at slightly different pitches and can turn into a very loud chorus.” She said frogs were great to have in backyards to eat spiders, mosquitos, flies and other insects. “You can also help these amazing creatures by not

using chemicals or pesticides in your garden because frogs absorb air and water through their skin. Tips to encourage backyard frogs: Place a branch or piece of rope at the edge of a swimming pool or pond so frogs can get out of water easily; avoid us-
ing chemicals in the garden; build a frog pond; keep ponds free of exotic fish because they eat frog eggs and tadpoles; install solar-power night lights to attract insects and in turn frogs; keep pets away
from frog areas; plant indigenous plants and place rocks around ponds. Remember that frogs are protected and it is illegal to remove them or their tadpoles from the environment.

With the development of the natural healthcare technology, people are now able to keep their system in better shape than ever before. The key to remember about good health is that like most things in life, you have to be proactive to enjoy the benefits that come with vibrant health and vitality. What is vibrant health and vitality? It is the ability of your entire system to function without stress or blockage, to be in its most natural state. With the society that we live in, we are all confronted with ongoing physical and mental stressors. This is where being proactive is so important. If you release and disperse the stress as it accumulates, you are able to keep your system in a state of balance and vitality. The problem for most people is that they let stress and problems accumulate, and this where the overload often leads to illness and disease. When you are suffering with symptoms, whether they be physical or mental, these are indicators telling you something is out of balance. TAKE NOTICE! Far too many people reach for symptom relief, while not doing anything about the underlying imbalance causing their symptoms, you are also focused on clearing the area of blockage and stress within your system. Don’t get distracted from the big picture
M
any people who own a portfolio of shares closely follow the daily financial news to see how much they made or lost the day before
But it might be argued that those prices are really only important if you are about to sell your shares. In practice, with shares in particular, it’s easy to be distracted from the big picture by short-term noise – temporary market downturns and sensational media headlines.
A look back at history
Remember 2001? The ‘dot-com’ crash, September 11, Iraq war and threats of terrorism caused share markets to head down and they stayed that way until March 2003. Some investors bailed out into the security of cash and bonds, just as they did during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007–2009 and more recently with the Eurozone debt crisis. Secure, yes, but with low returns. Cash and bonds might provide psychological comfort in turbulent times but a change in strategy can destroy your ability to generate long-term wealth – not to mention achieving low returns when interest rates are at historical lows.
Putting your faith in just one asset class is also a danger. Some investors saw direct property investing as a secure strategy. Then the property boom came to an end and the resources boom took over. The resources boom has quietened and the GFC left the legacy of depressed and volatile investment markets. You just can’t time the market In turbulent times it might be tempting to change strategy to protect yourself from short-term losses. Unfortunately, being out of the market might mean missing out on the market recovery and subsequent gains. Share prices are driven by supply and demand. Good economic or company news attracts buyers who push prices up. Conversely when the news is bad, prices fall. The major traders of shares are fund managers, banks, superannuation funds and other large institutions. They focus on the future and try to predict where share prices are heading – and as we all know, predicting the future is almost impossible.
Over the long term the trend is definitely up but predicting when is not easy. In theory, you should buy in the troughs and sell at the peaks – but only hindsight gives you that option. Timing the market is difficult. You just can’t pick the turning points. A better strategy is to stay invested to benefit from the upward surges. Share markets reward the patient investor.

Back to the future
Another wealth-damaging strategy is to switch to an asset class that is performing well. This often means investors are buying at close to the top of the market. The best wealth creation plan is to: 1. Assess your goals 2. Set a strategy, 3. Invest according to the strategy, 4. Stick to the strategy, and 5. Review periodically to ensure your goals haven’t changed and your investments still suit your strategy. Setting up a long-term strategy is one of the many ways your financial adviser can assist you in order to benefit from the market over time.

Matriarch dies aged 106 years
D
oris Muriel ‘Dorrie’ Malcolm has died at Hopetoun, aged 106.
Mrs Malcolm was a favourite among staff at Rural Northwest Health’s Hopetoun campus who described her as always being cheerful and grateful for the care she received. The eldest of eight children, Doris Muriel Ferguson was born on her grandparents’ farm at Tooan, near Natimuk, on April 7, 1907. She grew up on the family farm at Hopetoun and after school worked at Wembley Chambers, a private hospital in Horsham. As a young lady, Doris would often attend the dances in Hopetoun and at one dance after a football match, met
of her daughter Lois’ home. She lived there until well into her 90s when she moved into Corrong Village and eventually the Hopetoun campus. Doris watched five generations of her family grow which included 20 grandchildren and more than 50 great and great, great, grandchildren. Her daughter Lois Poulton said Doris always involved herself heavily in the activities of her young family members. She was also known throughout the region as a confident public speaker. Doris became the matriarch of generations of nurses in her family. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church and often volunteered to support the Hopetoun Bush Nursing Hospital.
Gippsland potato John Edward Malcolm. Mr Malcolm was in the region visiting his brothers who also farmed near Hopetoun. The couple married in Hopetoun on March 23, 1927. They settled in Gippsland, growing potatoes and raising six children Jean Bennett, Dorothy Surridge, Lois Poulton, Bert , dec, Dian White and Betty Quin. During the Depression the family travelled and stay anywhere Mr Malcolm could find work. They returned to Gippsland and in 1949 moved to Hopetoun where Mr Malcolm bought a butcher shop. Mr Malcolm died on July 4, 1973 and Doris eventually moved into a unit at the back

Childhood is a time of immense social and intellectual development. Ensuring healthy brain development in this vital stage of life can set the stage for healthy cognitive function, memory and learning well into adulthood. Issues with brain function and learning during childhood can lead to longterm social, psychological and behavioural problems. ADHD is the most common behavioural disorder in children. It affects about five to 10 percent of children. ADHD is characterised by different levels of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsiv-
ity and/or significant academic, social and emotional problems. Autism is another common childhood problem affecting the brain. It is less common, but it is becoming more widespread. This neuro-developmental condition is characterised by impaired social interaction and communication, restricted interests and repetitive behaviour.
Suggestions for good health The following dietary and lifestyle suggestions might assist with your child’s health condition: • Feed that growing brain and body the nutrition it needs to encourage optimal development. Regal run continues H
orsham trainer Greg Baker’s good fortunes during the last fortnight continued at Swan Hill last Monday.
Baker had Dubai King engaged in the Murray Downs maiden plate over 1300 metres. Four-time Horsham Cup-winning jockey Holly McKechnie was in charge of riding duties for the $15,000 event. Mallee punters rated the gelding a $6.50 chance on the tote right on start time. Once the starter released the field, McKechnie opted to settle the four-year-old back in a midfield position, giving him a ‘smother’ behind rivals. As the 13 maiden gallopers thundered past the 600-metre marker, Dubai King slowly crept into contention as the tempo of the race went up a notch. After balancing up for the run to the judge the son of Dubai Destination bullocked his
way into clear galloping room. With a couple of cracks from his Horsham hoop, he came home with a withering burst down the outside, finishing over the top of his rivals in the shadows of the post and sticking his neck out to claim victory. The win was Dubai King’s first in a fourstart career and a satisfying result for his owners headed by Wimmera racing identities Jim Lonsdale and Peter Rafter. If Dubai King can improve on his maiden win, he looks to have a nice future.
Angelic ride at Flemington
Leading Wimmera jockey Dean Yendall started the new season with a bang at racing headquarters at Flemington last Saturday. Yendall had to wait until the final event of the day to get his taste of success. The premier country hoop of last season teamed up with Tatura trainer Philip Evans to ride his under-rated mare Angelic Lass. Some astute Melbournian punters took the long odds offered by the bookies in the 1400-metre event. Once the starting stalls crashed back the five-year-old flew out of the machine, landing in front and pushed on to take the lead. Angelic Lass remained unchallenged for
Four-wheelers roar into action Some of the best fourwheel motocross riders in Australia will roar into action at Dooen Recreation Reserve near Horsham this weekend. Horsham is hosting the 2013 Yamaha Victorian Quad Motocross Championships on Saturday and Sunday and the track is in ideal condition. Horsham last hosted the event in 2011 and organisers are predicting plenty of action for an expected large crowd. One of the major attractions at this year’s title will be the clash between van Lllet brothers Jake, Mitchell, Harrison and youngster Cooper. The brothers are setting a hot pace in state and national competition with Mitch and Harrison fresh from representing Australia in China
last month and Jake intending to defend his Professional class title. Horsham Motorcycle Club is hosting the event and regular rain has provided the perfect racing circumstances for quad bikes. The club has developed a strong reputation for running high-class events at its Dooen headquarters on the outskirts of Horsham. Ideally placed between Melbourne and Adelaide, in has regularly presented major and state motocross events in the last 15 years. It is also hosting the KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championships next month. Racing starts at 9am on Saturday and Sunday and the club will donate all gate takings to the charity Wimmera Against Cancer in Kids, WACK.
the majority of the event, running the race on her own terms. The quality group of metro mares upped the ante as they swept up to the home turn. Angelic Lass was still travelling within herself as Yendall steered her to the centre of the track in search of the better going. The daughter of God’s Own kicked strongly all the way down the home straight with Dean throwing everything but the kitchen sink at her to get her past the post. Despite being challenged at the 200-metre mark Angelic Lass Proved too strong in a tenacious display.
In brief
Dean Yendall followed his Flemington success with a winning double aboard Distant Dreams and Cent To Save at Swan Hill on Monday. Ballarat trainer Darren Weir trained both gallopers. Swan Hill apprentice jockey Harry Coffey also enjoyed a good couple of days riding winners at Murtoa and Swan Hill.
Horse to follow
The Wild Thing was a strong winner at Coleraine on Sunday and would pay to follow in races over long distances on rainaffected tracks.

SPORT report
Rams’ chance to measure up against leader By GRANT KUCHEL
N
atimuk will finish off a successful Horsham District Football League season by getting a look at how much they have to improve when it hosts Kalkee this week.
Kalkee is the competition benchmark and with power forwards Josh Beddison and Adam Carter lurking inside the forward 50 the Kees always have the potential of kicking a big score. Natimuk will look to its midfield to win possession and stop swift movement into the Kalkee forward line. Shaun McDonald, Dylan Wright and Jamie Elliott will need big performances to limit scoreboard damage. Natimuk has struggled to kick goals of late and each week has relied on smaller forwards with key players such as swingman Tim Friend seemingly having lost form. Kalkee has injury concerns and last week Steve Schultz, Tim Wade, Brendan McDonald, Zavier Hobbs and Oliver Young all missed. It will be interesting whether the Kees get game time into them on Saturday.
Natimuk has come a long way this season but has tapered off towards season’s end but they can be pleased with how far it has come this season. The Baggies are finals smokeys and after putting Laharum out last year a win today will give them a shot of confidence. Shannon Argall notched the ton last week and he again looms large this week in Laharum plans. The Baggies are short of tall backman to stop him and Jason Przibilla. The battle in the midfield should be a beauty. Scott Carey, Paul Hanns and Ricky Whitehead form a potent trio for Swifts and their battle with Daniel Easson, Robbie Miller and Zac Price will be worth watching.
Wildcard
The wildcard in the Swifts pack is Tom Ruggles. The talented small man has had an impact in his limited games and opposition sides know little about him. Laharum has been more consistent than the Baggies and will go into finals on a winning note and full of confidence. Harrow-Balmoral tests itself against fellow finalist Edenhope-Apsley when the neigh-
bours clash. Both will be keen to flex their muscle because they might meet again in a couple of weeks. EdenhopeApsley looks to be settling and has rediscovered its mojo in recent weeks. The reliance on James Dixon to kick bags has diminished with Matt Cranage and Cam Domaschenz playing key roles. Harrow-Balmoral has embraced the game plan of Brent Forsyth, playing possession football and needs the ball in the hands of good ball users such as Forsyth, Tim Cogger and David Vickery. The key interest will be whether the Roos can penetrate the Edenhope-Apsley defence led by the highly efficient Chris Oliver, Jeremy Kealy and cool-headed Matt Close. These sides lift a gear or two against each other but the Saints have been the better side all year and should go into the finals by proving they are a few goals up on the Roos.
Winning note
A disappointing end to a season should end on a winning note for Rupanyup when it hosts winless Taylors Lake. Successive finals campaigns for the Panthers bit the dust last week and Rupanyup will
100-UP: Laharum forward Shannon Argall, fresh from kicking 100 goals, looms as a major problem for Swifts. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES
now play for pride and look forward to next season. Taylors Lake has had one of its hardest seasons but in recent weeks has found a way to manufacture ways of being more competitive. The Lakers however still rely on ageing veterans Tim Kelm, Aaron Lewis, defender Luke Robertson and youngster Craig Britten. Rupanyup has struggled to find a regular avenue to goal but young duo Scott Niewand and Jake Taylor slotted majors last week and the pressure will be on them to do it again. Taylors Lake will battle hard through the middle but lacks the class to match David Lang, Glenn Wyatt and Nathan Sachse.
Jason Weir, Dean Harberger and Craig Britten will as always have a crack but even though deflated, Rupanyup will get the job done.
Solace
Noradjuha-Quantong will also finish without a whimper after such a promising start. The Bombers will however take solace by grabbing the points over a vastly improved Pimpinio. Statesman Matt Ward and Brent McIntyre lead a solid and tough midfield that the young Tiger outfit will find hard to contain, especially if grounds continue to favour mud runners. Darcy and Todd O’Connor will try and mix it with the tough duo but don’t have the
body strength. Both sides boast goal-kicking prowess. Sam Turmine has hit form for the Tigers while Shane Oakley and Jarrod Combe lead the Bombers’ arsenal. Young Tigers Kyle and Jonty Dumesny have been solid and with Alex Hill and Simon Risson leading the backline the Tigers will fancy their chances. But Noradjuha-Quantong has more depth and should finish the year off with their noses in front.

Tigers on top and ready to take on Blues S
By MICK SHANNON
ea Lake-Nandaly Tigers have moved to the top of the Mallee Football League ladder after demolishing Jeparit-Rainbow by 165 points.
Full forward Cliff Ryan dominated for the Tigers, kicking 16 goals while his partner in crime Simon Weekly bagged nine. In other games Beulah managed a nine-point win over Woomelang-Lascelles while Ouyen United overcame Hopetoun in a high-scoring affair. This week will see the last round of the home and away season unfold with Woomelang-Lascelles taking on Walpeup-Underbool in a preview for the first semi-final while the Tigers battle with Beulah in a second semifinal. These games are to sure to attract
big crowds as fans prepare for a highly anticipated finals series. The top-of-the-table clash will unfold for the third time of the year with Beulah travelling to Sea Lake. Beulah has won both matches against the Tigers so far this year and will aim to make it three from three as it looks to hit top form heading into the finals. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers has been the form side over the past six weeks and has easily accounted for any side that has come up against them. Simon Weekly has kicked 26 goals in his last three games while Cliff Ryan is only 10 goals shy of a century. The Blues have managed to keep Ryan and Weekly relatively quiet in previous matches with Luke Spasic performing well against Ryan while versatile Kim Hallam has pushed
Weekly up the ground. This is where the game will be won. If Hallam and Spasic can keep the Tigers’ key forwards quiet then this will go a long way to giving Beulah victory. Through the midfield Beulah’s Micah Buchanan, Ryan McKenzie and Tyler Lehmann will go head to head against Colin Durie, Tom Summerhayes and Lance Brown. Buchanan has produced best-onground performances in the previous two matches against the Tigers. Beulah will look to Dennis Redden up forward but he will come up against powerful Tigers backman Stephen Lyons. These two will engage a tremendous battle of strength. This game will be an exciting and intriguing match as both sides look to assert their authority before the second
semi-final. The Blues have had the wood over the Tigers so far this season though and this will give them the confidence to bring home a 10-point win.
Top game
Another fantastic game will unfold at Woomelang Recreation Reserve with the home side taking on WalpeupUnderbool. The Cats have been playing strong footy of late and only lost to Beulah by nine points last round. Walepup-Underbool will be fresh after the bye and will want to show that it still has what it takes to win the flag. Woomelang-Lascelles has a great record against the Roos during the last two seasons and will give itself a big chance of knocking off the 2012 premiers. The Cats have Aaron Lonergan and
Dwayne Hamlyn playing fantastic footy while Corey Kelly provides pace and skill around the contests. For the Roos it will be the usual suspects of David Piasente and Luke Nathan doing the damage through the middle while Wade Champion will be hard to stop up forward. This match will be another close game but the Cats will use their homeground advantage to snatch a win. Ouyen United and Jeparit-Rainbow will play off at Ouyen. This game should be an easy victory for Ouyen United. Damian Cupido kicked 18 goals last round and only needs another seven to reach his century. Heath Clugston will continue to work hard for the Lakers but the Demons will win by 40-points. Hopetoun has the bye.

Another shot at double chance By DEAN LAWSON
D
ouble-chance opportunities take two! That about sums up the simple assignment awaiting Horsham Saints and MinyipMurtoa in Wimmera Football League this weekend. Perhaps we could also summarise it with the expression ‘try and try again’. Considering the quirky way the cards have fallen, both the Saints and Burras have a rare second chance at securing a critical third spot on the ladder. But as was the case last week, they again need to beat grand final favourites Horsham or Dimboola. Yes, that’s right, you’re not suffering from a bout of déjà vu. Last week the third-placed Saints took on second-placed Horsham while fourth-placed Minyip-Murtoa played ladder leader Dimboola. Both hit the ground with a resounding thud. This week the Saints meet Dimboola while the Burras take on the might of Horsham and sorry all you Saints and Burras fans, but you are going to hear an even louder thud this weekend. Of course while Dimboola and Horsham continue to loosen up the muscles for an impending finals campaign, fifthplaced Warrack Eagles will beat Ararat and scamper into third spot and win the
finals double chance at the deathknock. It is hard to suggest the two big games of the round, one at Murtoa, and the other at Coughlin Park in Horsham, will be anything but one-sided. If last week’s results provide any insight, the Demons will smash MinyipMurtoa while the Roos do likewise to the Saints. Sometimes teams match up better against different opponents but it is hard to see in this case. The truth is, the league has never looked so much like a two-horse race this season than it has leading into the penultimate homeand-away round. It will take an enormous amount of character from either Burras or the Saints to change their fortunes. Minyip-Murtoa must somehow find a way to penetrate the Horsham defence without leaving itself too exposed to be hurt on the rebound.
Springboard
Considering the way Horsham uses its back half as a springboard into attack, Minyip-Murtoa forwards will have to work overtime on the defensive side of their games. The Demons tend to break the shackles in 10 to 15-minute bursts, using the toe of players such as John Wood, Tyler Blake and Nick Pekin to launch profound counter-attacking sorties. Jordyn Burke then looms
RED-HOT: Horsham in-and-under play architect Nick Pekin leads a slick running brigade.
large and imposing in attack while Dylan Parish provides an aerial target, Alex Thomson seizes opportunities and Garrett Liston exploits any cracks that start appearing in opposition games. Minyip-Murtoa also needs to find a way of maintaining form in the heat of battle against a quality opponent. Last week the Burras led Dimboola at quarter time and were only three goals off the pace at the last change. But Dimboola powered home with a 10-goal-to-none final term.
The Burras’ list is loaded with youngsters which means inconsistency is always a threat. Last week Blake Young and Kade Petering were among the best, alongside Gus Trethowan, Clinton Midgley, Vinnie White and Zac Cross,
Pre-season Dimboola is starting to see the benefits of its big pre-season. It’s not surprising the Roos are finishing strongly and that spells doom for a Horsham Saints group, which seems to have lost
its way through injuries and form. There’s some talk that the Roos have more muscle and stamina than speed, something reflected in the game of players such as Peter MacFarlane and Al McKinnon. But the Roos don’t appear that slow. Hamish Exell, Nigel Sibson and Oliver Braithwaite provide dash each week and Lachie Exell and Ash Clugston are slick in attack. Like the Burras, the Saints struggle to find goal-kickers last week, although Gavin Kelm seems

to kick them against anyone.
Keeping winning
Warrack Eagles meanwhile simply need to keep winning. The Eagles have more of a danger game than some might realise in Ararat this week, especially after the Rats scored a good win against Nhill. There are still plenty of holes in the Eagles game and Ararat coach David Hosking and his men would love nothing more than causing a boilover. Horsham RSL Diggers
and Stawell meet at Horsham City Oval and both would be looking for victory. The Diggers and Warriors have had seasons they would rather forget and would be busy planning for next year.

oming into the last round of Mininera and District Football League’s home and away season the final position in the top five is still up for grabs.
Hawkesdale-Macarthur had what a shock result against third-placed Glenthompson-Dunkeld last week. Hawkesdale-Dunkeld, which led all day, was unable to hold off the rams and the game resulted in a draw. Even though Hawkesdale-Dunkeld would have been far happier with a win, at this stage a draw was all it needed to put itself in the prime position to snatch fifth spot on the eve of the finals.
Charles Nield was best for the Eagles, contributing four goals, Murray Habel and Adam Greene were also in the best and Danny Chatfield and Xavier McCartney continued to perform in front of goals, kicking five majors between them. This week Hawkesdale-Macarthur will want to be firing on all cylinders to clinch a finals spot when it travels down the road to take on Caramut. Caramut, 10th on the ladder, has managed only four wins for the season and comes off another hard week, going down to Tatyoon by seven goals. Daniel and Matthew Boyle were the only multiple goal scorers for the Swans, kicking three and two respectively, while midfielders Nathan

Jones and Lachlan Barr did all they could. But they were unable to stop the steamrolling Tatyoon, which has been going from strength to strength over the past weeks.
Ladder leaders Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, which has had top position sewn up for weeks, will finish off its home and away season against Penshurst. Wickliffe-Lake Bolac’s latest win was a 13-goal victory over SMW Rovers. Wickliffe Lake-Bolac never looked like losing the game, comfortably leading the Bulldogs throughout the contest. Forwards Josh Keys, Alister Woods and Daniel Smith were dominant up
forward, kicking 10 goals between them and the combination of height, speed and accuracy that has given the league’s backmen headaches all season. Penshurst, back on the winners list for the first time since round 13 last week, will give everything it has in a last-ditch attempt at retaining a finals berth. For the past five weeks Penshurst has had a tough run, playing all other teams in the top seven and managing only one win. In last week’s win against Great Western, Penshurst forwards dominated in front of goals with James Delahunty and Christopher Eales booting six apiece with Rory Neeson contrib-

uting five. Luke Ferguson and Justin Eales along with their goal scorers will hope they can do enough to get themselves over the line. In other games Great Western will finish off its season when it hosts Lismore-Derrinallum and Glenthompson-Dunkeld will carry a massive win into finals after it plays WoorndooMortlake. Tatyoon will also be looking to take a confidence-boosting win into next week’s elimination final after taking on Ararat. And SMW Rovers will give its all in one last attempt for a finals berth when it plays Moyston-Willaura at Moyston.

It’s official: Subaru BRZ STi in the works I
t has been a long two-year wait since it first arrived in concept form, but the hottest version yet of Subaru’s four-seat sports coupe is now officially just around the corner.
Subaru Tecnica International, the performance tuning and racing arm of the Japanese car-maker, has posed a string of teaser images on its Japanese-language website of what looks like a production version of the BRZ sports car wearing STi armour. The images show a version of the BRZ featuring a blacked-out grille wearing an STi badge, and set inside a foglight-clad bumper painted in the traditional WR Blue. Another image shows a side profile of the front guard with the high-mounted gill also featuring an STi badge. In between the images, the words “coming soon” flash up. While the images reveal little about what the hardcore version of the BRZ will look like, speculation is rife. At the heart of rumours is exactly what Subaru will do with the 147kW/205Nm 2.0-litre direct-in-
Tweaks The performance-honed BRZ is also expected to feature standard STi tweaks including harder-riding Bilstein shock absorbers, engine tweaks including a freer-breathing exhaust, and bigger brakes to handle the extra speeds. One of the big questions is if the STi-badged BRZ will continue to use the same skinny tyres borrowed from Toyota’s environmental hero, the Prius, or upgrade to more grippy rubber to help with cornering. Inside, expect the usual heavily bolstered STi-logo faux-suede bucket seats, a short-shift gear lever for manual versions, and enough badges

to let you know it is no ordinary BRZ. Subaru Australia was unavailable for comment. The car-maker already sells a $7195 sports package featuring a number of STi add-ons in Australia that gives the BRZ some sporty enhancements, but no more poke under the bonnet. The STi version of the Subarubadged Impreza hatch and sedan range carries about a $15,000 premium over their slightly more pedestrian, but still hardcore, WRX that itself attracts a $10,000 premium over the highest-priced mainstream model. That would suggest a price of about $60,000 for the STi-badged BRZ when it arrives here, hopefully sometime late next year. Barry Parkes © GoAutoMedia, 2013
Hyundai’s second-generation i10 city car has surfaced ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month, and it could be on the cards for Australia. Hyundai Motor Company Australia public relations general manager Bill Thomas confirmed the i10 is currently being assessed for the local market. “We always review new products for the Australian market,” he said. “While introducing a new entry level car is appealing, all products have to have a sound business plan behind them. “The existing i10 is highly acclaimed in Europe and we’re confident that the new car will be class-leading, but right now it’s still in the early stages of review.” Based on a new platform that stretches the wheelbase out by 5mm over the previous model, Hyundai says the i10 will deliver more precise wheel control over varied road surfaces thanks to relocated rear dampers. Hyundai also promises better driving dynamics and lower noise levels for its new super mini.
well as extra safety gear such as stability control and front curtain airbags. Hyundai Australia has previously ruled out introducing the current-generation i10 to the Australian market, because of its four-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating. The second-gen i10 is yet to be crash tested, but the addition of crucial safety equipment could boost its rating to five stars. Hyundai also revealed images of the model destined for the Indian market. While Hyundai is yet to release powetrain details for the European version, Indian-built i10s will be powered by a choice of either a 1.1-litre diesel or 1.2-litre petrol engine. The i10 is Hyundai’s entry-level offering in the super-mini class, sitting below the i20 light car in the South Korean carmaker’s line-up. If the i10 gets the green light for an Australian berth, its main competitors in the sub-light car segment would include the Suzuki Alto that retails from $11,790 plus on-road costs and the Holden Barina Spark from $12,490. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013
The all-new i10 is 80mm longer, 65mm wider and 50mm lower than the model it replaces, while legroom has increased and boot capacity is up by 10 per cent to 252 litres. European-spec models will be built at Hyundai’s Turkish plant and feature greater levels of optional equipment, including automatic climate control, heated steering wheel and cruise control as

jected four-cylinder boxer engine that powers both Subaru versions of the car, and the Toyota 86 version that shares everything but a few cosmetic changes. Both Subaru and Toyota have said there was no room for a turbocharged version of the car, mainly due to the tight under-bonnet real estate, however, the STi version is sure to stick to the road a lot better due to significant aerodynamic tweaks, such as the traditional big rear spoiler.

Mercedes sharpens twodoor E-Class equation ercedes-benz is expecting a slight bump in sales for its refreshed E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet range, thanks to a new entry-level variant and improved value for its higher-spec models. The German marque has repositioned the two-door range in Australia to include a new E200 base model, pushing the former entry-level E250 into the mid-spec slot, while the outgoing mid-spec E350 and flagship E500 V8 have been replaced by a single new V6 E400. As previously reported, the introduction of the E200 base model has lowered the entry price for an E-Class Coupe to $79,900, down $15,100 from the outgoing base model E250 that started from $95,000, while the new E200 Cabriolet brings the entry price down from $107,850 to $88,900, a reduction of $18,950. The model and pricing reshuffle means a number of models are cheaper than before, including the only diesel in the range, the E250 CDI, which now starts at $98,900, a drop from $101,500. Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the diesel Cabriolet because of slow sales.
Value Based on the additional equipment and change in pricing over the previous model, Mercedes’ local arm is claiming value improvements of around $20,000 for the E400 Coupe and $15,000 for the E400 Cabriolet and E250 CDI Coupe. The E250 Coupe improves in value by $10,000, while the E250 Cabriolet sees the buyer gain a $17,000 advantage. The range benefits from the major facelift that is evident across the entire E-Class line-up, with a new face and new panels from the A-pillar forward, however the Coupe/Cabriolet twins retain the same pronounced panels above the rear wheel arches as the previous model. Mercedes-Benz Australia manager of corporate communications Jerry Stamoulis told GoAuto he expects traditional Mercedes customers will be drawn to the new range, as well as buyers from other premium brands. “The value equation on the E400 is so good,” he said. “With the E200, we are hoping to do what we are currently doing and a little bit more from either side of the E Coupe and Cabriolet segment.” The pre-facelift E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet has averaged around 60 sales per month in Australia this year, for a total of 403 units shifted to the end of July, and

100 kilometres on the combined cycle, while the Cabriolet versions of those models can achieve 6.5L/100km.

Mr Stamoulis says he hoped for a modest boost to the 60 per month with the introduction of the updated model but that would depend on a number of factors, including the release of BMW’s 4 Series range.
The more powerful E400 Coupe sits at 7.5L/100km (7.7L/100km for the Cabrio) and the E250 CDI diesel rates an impressive 4.7L/100km.
one owner, full history.
“It comes down to deliveries, and what happens with (BMW) 4 Series. We will do everything we can to deliver what we can. We want to continue to lead this segment. If we win the segment, great, so long as we are selling what we are getting, we will be very happy.”
Mechanical Merc’s new-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine powers both the E200 and E250, although the version in the base model has been slightly detuned to produce 135kW and 300Nm. The E250 gets an extra 20kW of power for a total output of 155kW/350Nm and can sprint to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds, or 7.5s in the drop-top, while the E200’s sprint time is a tad slower at 8.0 seconds in the Coupe and 8.6s in the Cabriolet. Mercedes has essentially replaced the former range-topping V8 E500 and the six-cylinder E350 variants with the new E400 flagship and while the Coupe costs slightly less than the old E350 ($128,545 compared to $131,600), the Cabriolet is just $350 dearer at $142,545. This also means the cost of getting into a top-spec E-Class two-door Cabriolet has been cut by around $44,000. The new flagship is powered by a 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 producing 245kW and 480Nm of torque, which betters the outgoing 3.5-litre V6 E350’s 200kW/350Nm, but can’t match the bigger E500’s power of figures of 285kW/530Nm.
An upgraded dash and new materials feature in the E-Class cabin, with new additions including white-backed dials, a new full-colour display and a restyled centre console that is missing a gear selector - now housed on the steering column. Base E200s feature standard equipment such as multi-function leather steering wheel, leather sports seats, cruise control with speed limiter, reversing camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, automatic climate control, parking assist, heated and folding external mirrors, idle stop and 18inch alloy wheels. E250 Coupe and Cabriolet models get larger 19-inch wheels, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function and Mercedes’ Driver Assistant Package that includes blind spot and lane-departure warning, ‘Distronic Plus’ with active cruise control and steering that maintains the lane you are traveling in and LED head-lights. Stepping up to the E400 means the inclusion of DAB digital radio, a Harmon Kardon surround system, metallic paint, a 360 degree camera and a panoramic sunroof. Standard gear on the Cabriolet mimics the equivalent Coupe variant, but the droptop obviously misses out on the sunroof and adds the ‘Aircap’ electric air deflector and rear draught-stop on all variants, while the E250 and E400 feature the ‘Airscarf’ heating system that warms the driver and front passenger’s necks when the roof is lowered.

Jeep celebrates with 10th Anniversary Rubicon I
n celebration of 10 years of the nameplate in Australia, Jeep is offering a strictly limited edition Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition with extra gear and even better off-road ability. The limited run of 30 Anniversary Editions – 12 examples of the twodoor and 18 of the four-door – should be quickly snapped up by enthusiasts, with Jeep claiming it is the “most capable factory-produced Jeep Wrangler ever released.” Pricing for the limited edition offroader kicks off from $49,000 plus
on-road costs for the two-door, while $53,000 will get you into a four-door model.
This marks a $6000 increase in price over the regular Rubicon on which the 10th Anniversary Edition is based, but Jeep included improvements to the off-roading ability and Mopar-branded accessories to sweeten the deal. Jeep has boosted the ride height by half an inch – approximately 13mm – over the standard Rubicon provides more ground clearance and the 10th Anniversary Edition has a crawl ratio of 73.1:1 when matched with a manual

A dual-intake “Power Dome” bonnet that helps aid engine cooling gives the Rubicon an even more hard-core look, as do the Mopar rock rails that are fitted to better protect the car from off-road damage. Opel turns down long road to exit O
pel is unlikely to ever return to Australia as a standalone brand after pulling out of the sales race here less than a year into a bold international expansion. Instead, Opel will work with its Australian sibling, Holden, to re-establish a line of niche lion-badged cars sourced from the German car-maker, sounding the death knell for any likely return of the European badge. “Coming back as Opel Australia is highly unlikely,” Opel head of corporate communications Michelle Lang told GoAuto today. “In any event, Opel in Germany have terminated their supply agreement with us, so there will be no Opel brand here for the foreseeable future.” Opel’s 20 Australian dealers are believed to have been told of the brand’s demise at a meeting on Friday afternoon that was booked more than two weeks ago. However, according to Ms Lang,
Opel Australia only found out about Germany’s decision to pull back last week. “This was a decision from Opel in Germany,” Ms Lang said. “Opel Australia’s business model was based on a set of market conditions which have since moved dramatically.
Price war “There is now a veritable price war in our most important segments, which we cannot viably compete in. These changing market conditions, and the extent to which they have changed, were not foreseeable at the time the model was prepared,” Ms Lang said. “It is simply not profitable for us to compete. “Therefore to minimise the financial cost for all stakeholders, Adam Opel in Germany have made the difficult decision to close the current Opel Australia operations, and ... we were made aware of that here in Australia last week,” she said.
“Opel in Australia is a very small scale case, and building a brand in a market of such aggressive price competition quickly became commercially unviable.” GoAuto asked to speak with Opel Australia managing director Bill Mott, but was told that he was busy dealing with the fallout from last week’s shock decision. “As this is a very recent decision from Germany, who terminated the agreement to supply cars to us last week, Bill is more focused on his team, customers and dealers right now than his own moves,” Ms Lang said. “He has a lot of work to do as we navigate the closure of 20 dealers, and at such time as he has any announcements to make on his next professional move, I’ll let you know.”
main unsold in Australia, claiming the information is “commercially privileged”.
Compensation It is also unwilling to speak about how its network of dealerships – some with investments in the brand believed to be worth as much as $3 million – would be compensated in the wake of the withdrawal. “It’s too early to comment on this, and it is confidential information,” Ms Lang said. “We will be speaking with each and every dealer on an individual basis.” She said those talks between individual dealers and Opel Australia would start today.
ly scenario being via Holden’s dealer network,” Ms Lang said. “This is still under discussion, however, given the recency of this announcement. “However we will absolutely support and honour all commitments we have made to our customers, without question.” According to Ms Lang, Opel’s international expansion plans remain in place, with the company’s optimism “underscored by the recent announcement of 350 new engineer hires in Germany”. “(US parent company) General Motors is committed to making Opel profitable again,” she said.
In the meantime, the car-maker said it had written to all its customers on Friday informing them of the change in circumstances.
“There is a plan for a total of 23 new vehicles and 13 new engines by 2016, and a long term-partnership is in place with (French car-maker Peugeot and Citroen parent) PSA.”

sively and unrealistically optimistic when judging their driving competency and accident risk,” she said.
However, while Ms Mooren said addressing the human tendency to take risks by talking through the issues was in this case the most effective means of tackling the problem, it doesn’t mean technology can’t also help.

the highest risk we think we can handle without getting hurt. We take a lot of risks and get away with a lot of them, so the ballpark experience is telling us it’s OK. People just don’t see the risks.”

roup discussions have been found to be more effective than driver training, cash bonuses or awareness campaigns at reducing road incidents, according to a Sydney safety researcher.
This means that employers - including fleet operators suffering from frequent accidents and spiraling repair and insurance costs - can have a big impact on the rate of road accidents by getting staff together to talk about it. “There has been an abundance of research that shows that post-licence driver training really doesn’t make much difference at all,” says senior research fellow in transport and road safety research at the University of NSW Lori Mooren. Ms Mooren spoke this week at the Vehicle Safety on Our Roads seminar in Melbourne, organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia.
been done in Sweden by a company with 900 drivers in its fleet. In this test, they were broken up into groups and each group adopted a different method of trying to reduce crash rates.
“The study found you can improve safety through various measures, like giving people cash bonuses, by doing education campaigns and by telling them what the risks are,” she said. “They also did driver training that was more a risk education program.”
Identification But the best results came from the group that adopted the simple method of holding group discussions. “Groups of drivers got together, identified what the risks were and then they identified the things they could do to minimise their risks of having a crash,” she said.
“The traditional style of driver training, where it tries to increase drivers’ manual skills, haven’t shown a lot of benefit in terms of safety,” she said.
“Group discussions resulted in a 69 per cent improvement (reduction) in the financial cost of crashes. Then came cash bonuses (35 per cent), awareness campaigns (34 per cent) and driver training (33 per cent).
Ms Mooren referred to a study had
