Wednesday,February January 17, 13, 2016 2016 Wednesday, BREAKING GROUND: From left, 3WM and MIXXFM content director Amin ‘Nims’ Azoor, lead announcer Ben Williamson and Horsham general manager Scott Grambau prepare for the official launch of Local Football Live at Horsham City Oval clubrooms tomorrow night. The launch will feature guests including former Fremantle coach, AFL Live commentator and football authority Chris Connelly, former Port Adelaide player and now Horsham Saints premiership coach Shayne Breuer and Laharum premiership leader Shannon Argall. Local Football Live, on MIXXFM this year, will feature extensive radio coverage of alternating Wimmera and Horsham District league football matches each week. The broadcasts, from various grounds across the region, are an extension of Saturday morning radio sports show The Shirtfront, anchored by Williamson with panelists David Johns, Grant Kuchel and Dale Hurley. Mr Grambau said Local Football Live was the extension of a football broadcast trial last year: “Feedback was incredibly positive to the point where we had no alternative but to provide listeners with the weekly dose of local football, further entrenching our already profound connection with the community. Apart from the listener feedback, the business community has also jumped on board and provided great support.” The first LFL broadcast will be from Murtoa featuring Wimmera league’s game of the round between Minyip-Murtoa and Horsham Saints.
Flight service push H
orsham Rural City Council’s endorsement of a project brief for the city’s aerodrome master plan could provide the catalyst for a renewed push for a regular public air service.
Providing an opportunity for an air service to operate from the aerodrome is listed in the project brief as a ‘potential’ future development. The brief also asks for the plan to consider other stakeholder and community visions, such as enhancing the role of the aerodrome as a strategic fire-fighting base and further developing aviation-related

industry at the precinct. The council is developing the master plan to establish a long-term vision for the aerodrome. It also wants a framework to safeguard aerodrome development such as runway and air-corridor extensions from circumstances such as the growth of Horsham residential and industrial areas. The plan will also help in determining a Western Highway bypass route around Horsham, supporting a recommendation from a Horsham bypass planning panel for an investigation of the potential impact of VicRoads’ proposed bypass alignment on planned exten-
sions of the runways. Establishing a regular public air service out of Horsham has long been the subject of lobbying and debate. Trials to test its commercial viability in the past have failed.
Past interest
Hamilton-based Australian regional airline Sharp Airlines showed interest in operating from Horsham about five years ago and Wimmera Development Association explored the idea of a regular flight service between Horsham and Melbourne in 2012. The aerodrome is already used for air-ambulance op-
erations, a base for aerial fire-fighting and commercial and recreational aviation. The council’s technical services director and aerodrome manager John Martin said the master plan would focus first on the future needs of the aerodrome. “In establishing these needs, it will then be possible to work out whether VicRoads’ preferred bypass alignment will impact on these future needs,” he said. “The council has used a master plan guideline developed by the aviation industry as the basis for its project brief, but also wants to ensure that all relevant
issues are captured in the scope of the project.” Mr Martin said to ensure this happened, the council invited the public to obtain a copy of the project brief, and advise the council of any additional issues that should be considered in the preparation of the plan. People can download the master plan project brief from the council website, www.hrcc. vic.gov.au. They can also obtain a copy from Horsham Civic Centre in Roberts Avenue. The project brief outlines an extensive public consultation process. Consultation will involve a stakeholder group with direct interest in the aerodrome,
and with the broader community at key stages in the project. The council wants to hear from the public or any interest groups that would be appropriate inclusions in the stakeholder group. It asks people to provide comments, nominations and other details to the council by March 9. The council will then review details to confirm a final project brief and stakeholder group during March. “We anticipate the preparation of the master plan will be completed by the middle of the year,” Mr Martin said.
