Anzac camp builds

H

orsham is bracing for its biggest Anzac Day in years with many people buying tickets to sleep out at Sawyer Park before attending a 6.30am dawn service the next day.

Organisers expect a Camp Gallipoli crowd at Sawyer Park on Anzac Day eve to swell into the hundreds, if not more as they join students from across the region for special commemorative presentations. Horsham RSL’s David Eltringham said more than 300

year nine, 10 and 11 students from schools across the region, special guests at the event at Horsham Soundshell, would sleep under the stars at nearby Horsham City Oval reserve. He said a maximum of 200 people would also have an opportunity to sleep out at Sawyer Park. “We’ve allocated an area in Sawyer Park for people keen to sleep the night but it will be a case of first in, best dressed for the overnighters,” he said. “During presentations the

students group will gather at the front of the soundshell and the general public will be able to gather behind them to also experience the activities. Everyone is invited and we expect a lot of people.” The level of Wimmera sacrifice at the Australian landing at Gallipoli in the First World War prompted national Camp Gallipoli organisers to include Horsham in the Centenary of Anzac event. The Gallipoli landing claimed the lives of 48 Horsham district

soldiers and Horsham is one of 12 regional sites across Australia to host an Anzac Day Eve camp. Presentations, starting at 6.30pm on April 24, include an outdoor cinema experience featuring Russell Crowe’s war drama The Water Diviner. There will also be an 11,000 Voices documentary, major ceremonies including the arrival of the Anzac Flame and formal recognition of Horsham soldiers killed in action, and musical entertainment.

Mr Eltringham, Horsham RSL’s commemorative chairman and major events co-ordinator, stressed that the event was open to everyone and he expected a large attendance. “Everybody wants to be involved. There will also be food vans and refreshments available,” he said. Mr Eltringham said organisers were asking adults attending the event to make a donation of $10 and children $5 for tickets and an extra $5 to sleep the night.

“The donation is basically to help us cover costs. It is going to be a special night,” he said. Tickets are available from Target Horsham, Horsham RSL and online at www.trybooking. comHEGD. Mr Eltringham said the national 100-year commemoration of the Gallipoli landing, combined with Camp Gallipoli Horsham and the arrival of the Anzac Flame was likely to lead to one of the biggest Anzac Day services at Sawyer Park on record.
