A tiny marmoset monkey steals a random sip from a tap at Halls Gap as the Wimmera-Mallee waits in anticipation for the autumn break.

Much of the region is thirsty after a long, dry summer and expectation is growing as the year pushes deeply into April without any sign of heavy rain on the immediate horizon. While the autumn break often occurs in May, many farmers traditionally like the rain to come before Anzac Day. The Common Marmoset monkeys at Halls Gap, meanwhile, are far from fussed about the weather, having celebrated a new arrival, see page 5.

long-time push to develop a major multi-use indoor sport and community centre in Horsham is primed to gain momentum during the next few months.

Horsham Rural City Council planning and economic director Tony Bawden revealed this week that the concept would feature prominently in a municipal sport and recreation strategy review.

He said an independent community review group had been busy researching the pros and cons of an indoor centre and consultants Philip Gray and Associates would present review findings to the council in June. “There has been discussion raised through the review process about reinforcing the concept for multi-user indoor sport and probably community facility. As a result of those discussions the council has shown interest in advancing the concept to a greater planning stage,� he said.

Mr Bawden said the council had also met with Horsham Agricultural Society to consider a 2006 Horsham showground master plan, which included an expansive multi-purpose indoor sporting centre. The blueprint showed the centre at the northern end of the showground, incorporating a closed McBryde Street and designed to operate in close association with Horsham Basketball Stadium.

Community plan Mr Bawden said the council would wait until completion of the strategy review, which was “well advanced� to establish sport and recreation priorities for Horsham. “It’s important to note that feedback from planning for a Horsham Community Plan has also shown that an indoor facility is a high priority for many people. There has been a clear indication through sheer weight of numbers of community support for such a project,� he said. “On the strength of that alone, we believe that there would be various groups

interested in using a multi-purpose facility – and not just sporting groups and there is already a pretty good case to advance some serious planning.�

Mr Bawden said the council’s previous sport and recreation review from Philip Gray and Associates several years ago had identified the potential need for a multipurpose sporting centre.

immera people have confirmed their close relationship with rivers, creeks, lakes and waterholes as part of a regional Make a Splash competition.

Judges for the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority competition selected a Michael Schilling story about picnics and sunsets at Green Lake near Horsham as the winner.

Anne Newton’s entry about Swallows Hole on the Wimmera near Dimboola, a personal story from Carl Sudholz about his wedding at Green Hole Billabong near Lake Lonsdale and a colourful rendition by Kola Kennedy about a boat ride along the Wimmera River at Dimboola all rated a special mention.

“Green Lake Horsham offers a great family friendly environment,” Michael’s entry read.

“At the end of a busy week we often have a picnic or takeaway at the lake, watching the sun set and listening to all manner of different creatures as the lake really comes alive as dusk turns into night. In this modern world it is great to

take some time out and enjoy the simple pleasures that nature has to offer. It showcases everything that is great about living in the Wimmera to locals and passing traffic and is a great meeting place for family or friends whether they are into water sports or simply relaxing.”

The Weekly Advertiser editor Dean Lawson, Wimmera MailTimes acting editor Carly Werner and Wimmera CMA board chairperson Karen Douglas were judges.

They judged 55 eligible entries, looking for the most original and creative that captured the essence of Wimmera waterways.

Strategy Mrs Douglas said the competition was a lead-in to the community engagement phase for a new Wimmera Waterway Strategy, which would identify priority areas for waterway management for the next eight years.

“An important part of developing the new waterway strategy is building a picture of the value of specific water spots across the region to local residents, so we asked people

to describe in 150 words or less their favourite place on or near the water in the Wimmera,” Mrs Douglas said.

“We were rapt with the number of entries that described how much Wimmera people valued their waterways.”

Mrs Douglas said all judges agreed Mr Schilling’s story all bases of the values of water to Wimmera people.

“His story was about community values, family values, environmental benefit and, useability. The clear message was just how much people appreciate and connect to water across the Wimmera – whether it be a swamp, river, creek, waterhole or lake,” she said.

“The entries all demonstrated that Wimmera people have an extra appreciation of water as we swing from bust cycles to boom and back to bust again.”

Mrs Douglas said although the competition had closed, the CMA was keen to keep hearing from Wimmera people about their favourite waterway.

here has been a strong argument for the development of a state-ofthe-art multi-purpose sporting centre in Horsham for many years.

It seems amazing that a city and district with such a rich history of sport has made do with the hodge-podge of glorified sheds or inappropriate halls and pavilions to pursue serious and highly organised competition and training for so long.

People playing sports such as volleyball, badminton, squash, table tennis, gymnastics and calisthenics have all had to simply ‘make do’ with what has been on offer.

Horsham Rural City Council has long been aware of a campaign to improve and consolidate indoor sporting facilities and it seems, with development of many other big projects out of the way, that the municipality might be a step closer to

In this area, all eyes have immediately turned to Horsham showground, a vast expanse of under-used river-frontage land that, apart from progressive Horsham Greyhound Racing Club projects, seems to have been waiting an eternity for development.

Considering Horsham Basketball Stadium, Horsham velodrome and Horsham Aquatic Centre are nearby, and Horsham Agricultural Society has already drawn up plans for such a centre on the reserve, it would make sense to push ahead with development at the site. Or would it?

Alternative?

The showground, while presenting a wonderful opportunity for some form of development, does have drawbacks.

A greyhound-racing track and a centre arena surface that would need significant annual management to repair damage from horse traffic and would limit the expansion of sport from indoors to outdoors.

In some cases they are fleeing oppression and violence and death and terror for their families as a result of war in their homeland where our troops have been involved with other military forces.

This to my mind is an acceptable situation. It makes me feel ashamed to be Australian and ashamed to sup-

port a government and opposition to allow this to continue. These people are human beings who desperately need our help in their hour of need to safeguard their families’ future as well as their own lives.

My mind goes back to the Second World War and massive adoption and welcoming of migrants from devastated countries. They were assisted to begin new lives in Australia – the land of the fair go. These migrants earned

Therefore, the showground might or might not be the best location for a major indoor centre and it is crucial that Horsham Rural City Council explores all options before making a decision.

One argument that holds weight is that any major sporting centre will need to somehow pay for itself and this can only occur through sheer weight of use.

If that’s the case, then it must be readily accessible to people daily and that immediately steers the concept towards Horsham west and the city’s two largest public schools.

It might make sense, considering Horsham College will undergo multi-milliondollar development in the future and Horsham West Primary School is bulging at the seams, that a new indoor sport centre, complete with outdoor facilities, finds a new home somewhere between the two.

GROUPS TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE Horsham Rotary Club is sponsoring Steph Cox’s Leadership Wimmera journey in 2013.

Steph says she believes that participating in the Regional Leadership Skills program will increase her confidence both personally and professionally. ‘It will give me an opportunity to grow as a person’ she said.

The Rotary Club of Horsham is sponsoring their youngest ever member as she embarks on her leadership journey.

Steph joined the Rotary Club of Horsham in June 2012.

Franz Tursi, President of the Rotary Club of Horsham, said ‘Steph has youth and vibrancy about her and an honest wish to help and return something to the community. She is a former exchange student to Denmark and is actively participating in youth exchange training for future exchange students.We believe that by participating in the Leadership Wimmera program, Steph will be broadening her horizons and skills’.

ormer Victorian Farmers Federation president Andrew Broad, 37, of Bridgewater will contest the next Federal Election as the Nationals’ candidate for Mallee.

Making sense of old hags and black cats

s soon as we saw a little black cat darting across our path, all three of us in the car screamed ‘black cat’! Probably the cat heard us too – it had second thoughts and darted back to the safety of the curb.

Most cultures have certain beliefs, notions or in some cases fears, not always based on reason or knowledge. It is quite fascinating to see when and how some of these beliefs came into existence but the whys are not always answered.

Black cats have always been the protagonist of most folklore beliefs in most countries, and yet not many can say from where the myth originated. Meanwhile even the most rational amongst us, given centuries of unexplained superstitions ingrained into us, shy away from the alleged harbinger of bad luck.

However, sometimes there seems to be reason in madness too – some customs that came into practice to address certain problems or at times merely the symptoms cannot be simply pushed aside as mere mumbo-jumbo. Some of them seem

up immediately from such a state. However, the not so funny part about this is that sleeping in the supine position is the prominent trigger for such episodes.

While growing up, I was constantly admonished by my mother never to lie on my back after a meal. Of course, try telling a body especially in sleep consciousness state not to lie supine. I later found myself having several traumatic episodes unable to wake up and sensing an alternate presence in the room.

It is said that some cases of recurrent sleep paralysis may involve a genetic factor. So ironically all those years of mindlessly following a custom handed down generation after generation seemed to have some kind of influence on keeping such episodes at bay. Quite the light bulb moment for me!

Over the centuries, symptoms of sleep paralysis have always been attributed to paranormal or evil presence plaguing the hapless humans at night.

Having read only abridged versions, I wouldn’t be the one to know but looks like even Shakespeare had borrowed the Old Hag for his ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – ever wondered about the expression ‘hag-ridden’, well it was an old term for sleepparalysis.

As these so called experiences were few and far between, I didn’t freak out much.

Instead, I submitted myself to further such beliefs thrust upon me by my protective parent to thwart such experiences, including her constant insistence on changing my sleep position.

Almost all cultures have had stories of shadowy nocturnal creatures associated with such episodes; but now most of these cases of magical and spiritual possession can be explained including some of the so called ‘alien abductions’ and ‘out of body experience’ stories as well.

It was only in the last few years, I realised I was suffering from ‘sleep paralysis’, sadly the recurrent type. Even though not the slightest dangerous as a health problem, it is extremely tiresome and insanely frightening especially given the hallucinations and inability to wake

his time a year ago Wayne and Pam Caldow and their son Hugh were enjoying ‘cuppas’ on their back veranda while brolgas danced across a swamp teeming with life and colour.

Ducks, swans and many other birds were part of the daily comings and goings at Dix Swamp – a 35-hectare wetland in the Caldow’s west Wimmera backyard.

They also saw parrots, cockatoos and other birds take part in a hive of activity in and around a giant habitat tree – a redgum with a cubbyhole hollow at its base.

The view presented all the colours of the west Wimmera landscape: A blue shimmering haze across the swamp’s surface; the muted pink of the breeding brolgas; the colourful green and red flashes of bush birds busily going about their day; and the fresh green growth of redgums across the swamp country.

Sadly, the Caldow’s back veranda now presents a different view.

Three weeks ago the family and the Country Fire Authority went into battle to save the house and surrounding sheds from a fire that whipped through the farm, 15 kilometres east of Edenhope.

Now all that’s left of Dix Swamp are charcoal-coloured tree trunks, scorched brown leaves and a blackened expanse where the shallow wetland holds water during wet years.

But through the charred remains, Wayne and his family are looking on the bright side. A week ago Wayne delighted in the sight of 20 brolgas in a paddock a kilometre from the house.

Wayne is also thankful three swamp areas the family has protected through Wimmera Catchment Management Authority’s Habitat Tender program were unscathed.

“We count ourselves very lucky these three swamp areas weren’t burnt,” he said.

“We’ve put a lot of work, time and effort into them with funding support from the CMA.” Wayne’s family settled on Langlea 90 years ago and Wayne has learned to appreciate the ‘special place’ in which he lives.

Tourism He believes the Wimmera’s west is an untapped eco-tourism resource just waiting for the world to see.

“All the special places for me are water-related. I grew up with all these swamps in my backyard, observing nature and being part of nature whether it be swimming or one of my long-time loves, hunting,” he said.

“Being a hunter, you have to be observant of nature and as you get older you more clearly see the importance of nature and you appreciate it and want to look after it even more.”

Wayne said his growing appreciation is what led him to do more to protect and preserve swamp areas on his farm.

“As you grow older you can see the values of connecting these natural areas,” he said.

When the opportunity arose to be part of the CMA’s Habitat Tender, a program developed to as part of a 2006-2011 waterway strategy, Wayne jumped at the chance.

“Having the chance to protect swamp areas without the financial burden of doing it ourselves was a real bonus,” he said.

After fencing off three wetland areas from stock, planting trees and controlling weeds, the family took it a step further with a Trust for Nature covenant.

“Dix Swamp is special for our family and we have been looking after it for a very long time,” Wayne said.

Wayne is now looking forward to an autumn break returning water to his swamp country and Dix Swamp.

“It’s nice to know that everything is still there and when the water comes back it will all just switch back on again.”

Badges at Bunnings Horsham RSL sub-branch members will sell Anzac Day badges at Bunnings store in Horsham this weekend. They will also be selling food as part of a fund-raising sausage sizzle.

Horsham plumber Timothy Scott has won major recognition at statewide Plumbing Industry Training Awards. He won his award for commitment to ongoing training in the plumbing industry.

Mr Scott collected the 2013 Energy Safe Victoria Gas Award after completing Certificate IV qualifications in Advanced Gasfitting.

The Pirates of Penzance has been a success since it was first written in 1879 when it had dual premieres in a tiny theatre in Devon and a large theatre on Fifth Avenue, New York on the same night. It has maintained its popularity ever since and is constantly the subject of productions around the world.

Goodbye to irrigation

T

he $4.8-million decommissioning of a Wimmera irrigation system is underway with contractors starting at Coromby, north of Murtoa.

GWMWater has started the process as part of the Commonwealth Government’s purchase of irrigation water

and will complete the work by December 31.

Project funding is part of the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline Project.

GWMWater managing director Mark Williams said a land liaison team had gathered details about landowner concerns and prepared informa-

tion for contractors.

The corporation awarded Miller Contractors with a tender to remove and dispose of water wheels and Glover Earthworks a tender to fill in channels and remove structures on private property “Our contractors are contacting landowners before access-

ing private property to advise timing of works and to arrange property access and livestock movements,” Mr Williams said.

“All channels will be filled in and structures removed unless they are required for another purpose, in which case they will be transferred to the appropriate party.”

The event will run from 6pm to 7.30pm and will celebrate the hard work and dedication by volunteers in a range of community groups and organisations across the municipality.

Pool and spa covers are not considered a safety barrier and they do not comply with the law.

Owners of swimming pools and spas should maximise the safety measures by using the following important points: 1. Make sure there is approved safety barriers (fencing) surrounding the entire swimming pool.

Ararat forms literacy partnership

rarat Community Enterprise has formed a partnership with Ararat district maternal and child health nurses to encourage youngsters to develop early literacy skills.

The organisation has donated $400 to provide picture books to every baby booked in for a four-month municipal maternal child health visit.

Ararat mayor Cr Ian Wilson said Ararat Rural City Council maternal and child health nurses Helen Boling and Therese Arnott were pleased to have formed the partnership to help children develop a love of books and reading.

The formation of irritating crystals or even stones in the bladder is a common reason, but in some cats, stress or upset alone can be enough to trigger lower urinary tract disease.

Other cats may urinate in strange or inappropriate places, or have blood in their urine. Worst of all, some male cats may become ‘blocked’, or unable to urinate – a serious, life-threatening condition which quickly leads to discomfort, lethargy, vomiting and even death if untreated.

There are many reasons why cats can develop urinary tract disease. A simple bacterial infection can cause cystitis, or a bladder infection, and is more common in females of all species.

Due to their different anatomy, however, bacterial infection is much less likely in males, and

Anything which causes a cat to ‘hang on’ and not pass urine frequently, can lead to the development of crystals in the urine or bacterial infection.

Common reasons for cats to avoid urinating include: • Cold, unpleasant weather preventing cats from going outside • Too few litter trays in a multi-cat household • Dirty trays that aren’t cleaned out frequently enough • Some cats prefer one type of litter over another, so it is worth trying different types • Dominant cats in groups may prevent others from using the tray • A litter tray which is in a very public or exposed area In addition, overweight cats are much more prone to developing urinary tract disease. Diet also plays a big role, particularly for cats which are prone to forming crystals or stones in the urine. Luckily, premium quality cat foods are designed to prevent this occurring.

Lower urinary tract disease can be a real problem for cats, but by using a good quality diet, maintaining a healthy body weight, good litter tray management, and avoiding stress for our feline friends, many of these cases can be avoided.

Big scores and big games await MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

allee Football League has produced big scores in the opening two rounds of the season with the closest margin being 50 points.

It reflects what has been an excellent display of attacking football.

This week features only two matches while three teams have a bye, but both games should be high-class affairs.

The first and most exciting match of the round will see Walpeup-Underbool play host to Beulah.

The Roos are in red-hot form after demolishing a hapless Hopetoun by 188 points, while Beulah easily accounted for Jeparit-Rainbow by 11 goals.

This game is set to be a classic with the battle of the key forwards likely to determine which way this game goes.

Walpeup-Underbool centre half forward Wade Champion has been in fantastic form, kicking 20 goals in the first two outings, including a bag of 13 last round.

The Blues have their own firepower

though, with full forward David King coming off seven goals last week while new recruit and centre half forward Dennis Redden kicked six to stake his claim as one of the best players in the competition.

It’s no wonder that these players get so many opportunities to kick goals. Both teams possess fantastic midfields.

Walpeup-Underbool will look to Chris Chubb, Ben Fisher and David Piastene to take control at the centre clearances but will find the going tough against Beulah onballers Tyler Lehmann, Shaun Monohan, Scott Smith and Micah Buchanan.

The skills of these two teams will be high class and should provide fans with a fantastic spectacle.

Young Beulah ruckman Tim Phelan showed a lot against Sea Lake-Nandaly Tiger last round, with his high leap and pace around the ground a key factor in getting the Blues forward.

The Roos however have a strong ruck contingent with man-mountain Josh Charles a proven match winner while his back-up Mathew Palmer rarely plays a bad game.

This match could go either way, but if the Blues can get their game together, their depth should see them

just get up by 10 points.

Devils Hopetoun will be looking to get its first win of the season when it comes up against Sea Lake-Nandaly TIgers.

The Devils have been disappointing in their first two games and now sit at the bottom of the ladder, while the Tigers were impressive in their firstround match against Ouyen United and should be ready to go after having the bye last week.

Deek Roberts and Pat Purcell will return to the Hopetoun line-up this week after being unavailable to play against Walpeup-Underbool. This should see the Devils improve their

midfield work, but they will still be up against the likes of silky Tigers midfielders Colin Durie, Bill Barry and Darcy Ryan.

Hopetoun will need a massive lift from its younger group of players, who have struggled to keep up with the pace of senior footy so far this year. Players such as Leigh Stewart, Alex McCarthy and Matt Bellinger will all need to step up if the Devils are going to be any chance of winning this game.

The Tigers have match-winners all over the ground and will look to forwards Wes Harrison and Cliff Ryan to get the job done in front of goals again.

Hopetoun key forward Bryce Wellington will need to kick a bag and will require support from Luke Carr to give the Devils a winning score.

Hopetoun will come out flying this week but the Tigers will be too strong, and will overcome the Devils by 25 points.

Saints reload for season opener WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

orsham Saints are set to reload an on-field silver bullet when they take on Minyip-Murtoa in a Wimmera Football League season opener this weekend.

WIMMERA round one

The Saints have remained stoically uncommitted about the playing future of their star Toohey Medallist Phil Butsch throughout the off-season but all indications are that the gun ball-winner will be right to play on Saturday.

It is no secret that Butch has overcome serious illness and been training with the Saints but it was his solid form in the club’s latest intra-club practice match that seems to have put speculation about him playing beyond doubt.

Butsch, for ball-magnet tenacity, particularly off half back, looms as a potential silver-bullet or fix-it man if circumstances go awry for the Saints at Coughlin Park.

The Saints will desperately want to win, not only to start their season off strongly, but to fuel celebrations marking the club’s 20th anniversary in Wimmera League.

The club has a major party planned and will unveil a heritage jumper for the game.

Sheer numbers on the training track is likely to weigh heavily in the Saints’ favour for the season opener.

The Saints had 60 players at training last week, providing a pleasant headache and dilemma for selectors this week.

But Minyip-Murtoa is unlikely to be a pushover and in fact reports suggest the Burras’ recruiting might have given coach Scott Arnold the balance across the lines he might have missed in the past.

The impact of incoming players such as Jayden Beaumont, Matthew Friedlieb and George Massa will be unknown until players run onto the ground. But there is little doubt what influence John Delahunty will have back in black, white and blue and there is plenty of expectation about forward Braydon Ison this year.

Horsham tester Reigning premier Horsham meanwhile will enter new ground, taking on grand-final adversary Warrack Eagles at Horsham City Oval without Stuart Farr at the helm.

Horsham v Warrack Eagles at Horsham City Oval Stawell v Dimboola at Central Park, Stawell Ararat bye Jordyn Bourke and Brad Hartigan have the Demons’ reins this time around and watchers remain curious to see if speculation that the canyon separating Horsham from the rest of the field is shrinking is true.

But will Warrack Eagles, the only team to challenge the Demons of late, have what it takes to challenge the decade-long premiers?

The Eagles, despite a significant coaching coup in gaining Tim Inkster at the helm, have had some serious departures.

Luckily, the likes of Ben Spicer, Peter Weir and Ben Harrison will still wear maroon and gold this season.

Has it worked?

While Horsham Saints are celebrating 20 years in Wimmera League this year, Horsham RSL Diggers are celebrating 30 and the club is using the milestone as a major season driver.

The Diggers have been training solidly and with super-athletic utility Damian Cameron taking an on-field leadership role under coach Paul Brooks and with Kye Chapple and Justin Garth in great pre-season form the outfit looks better than last year.

They take on a Nhill side that has stuck to tradition and kept everybody guessing about where it will sit this year.

The Tigers and Diggers faced off against

each other in challenging bottom-of-thetable encounters last season and both will consider victory this weekend essential.

Whether the enormous amount of work that has gone in to strengthen both camps has worked remains to be seen.

Roos set Dimboola has captured much of the pre-season hype after appointing Stuart Farr as coach and immediately attracting a handful of quality recruits.

Everyone with the slightest interest in the competition will be following the Roos’ fortunes closely and will start by analyzing how the outfit performs against Stawell at Stawell.

Dimboola has attracted big numbers to Farr’s grueling training sessions and the consistent message coming from under the gums is that the Roos are super fit.

Stawell’s build-up has been relatively opaque and if you believe the scuttlebutt the Warriors might be one of the strugglers this year.

But Stawell has always had talented youngsters stepping into the breach and has a new leader in Tim Seymour cracking the whip.

The evolution of the likes of Jackson Dark and Cam Kimber and how Ararat imports Toby Reid and Jackson Giles perform in a new environment will also be interesting.

Divine help for redhot trainer Dodson T

elopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson has enjoyed a phenomenal last 10 days training winners left, right and centre.

Dodson’s latest win was with one of his many consistent gallopers God Help Us at Donald last Monday.

The brown gelding took his place in the last event of the day, a restricted 1600-metre event. Horsham-based hoop Holly McKechnie was in the saddle for the $15,000 nag drag and were considered among the leading chances.

After the starter released the field, God Help Us began beautifully and was quick to take up the box-seat position after travelling a few hundred metres. The leaders out in front were cutting at each other’s throats, this ensured a solid pace giving the son of Caulfield Guineas hero God’s Own a charmed run throughout.

Approaching the home turn God Help Us all of a sudden found himself in an awkward position on the rail.

McKechnie, in a race-winning move, found a clear passage though the traffic, and under hard riding was able to hold off a fast-finishing challenge from eventual minor place getter Annie’s A Gem to score by a neck.

The win was God Help Us’ sixth in a 33-start career for earnings of $70,000.

Back on Target Handy galloper Some Target also returned to form at Donald for the Darren Weir stable winning the feature event, the Centrebet Benchmark Handicap over 1350 metres.

Injury-plagued jockey Michelle Payne was in the pig skin, keen as mustard to continue her good form since returning to race riding after suffering a nasty fall last year. Some Target himself was out to improve things after two recent inglorious performances.

Local bookies rated him an outside chance at $13 just before start time.

Once the starter released the field, Payne elected to ride a quiet race on the gelding, settling in last position.

As the group of handy sprinters thundered past the 600-metre marker, Some Target made his move into a challenging position before the home turn.

After balancing up in the straight with plenty of clear galloping room the son of Chilean import stallion Hussonet, swept to the lead, making short work of his 12 rivals to score a dominant two-length victory.

Some Target has been a good money spinner throughout his 17-start career recording six wins for his connections headed by Horsham businessman Peter Blair.

The Saints, celebrating 20 years in Wimmera League this year, will raffle the jumpers at a dinner in their clubrooms.

The jumpers combine the green and gold of St Michaels, which the club was previous known as, and the red, black and white of today’s Horsham Saints.

Players will also wear the jumpers against Minyip-Murtoa on Saturday.

hree-nil will be the buzz line this week out at Natimuk as they extend a winning streak that no one would have thought possible at season’s beginning by accounting for Taylors Lake.

Whatever coach Dylan Wright has done over the off season has been a winner and only over-confidence will bring them undone against a Lakers side that is really struggling to keep pace with their opposition.

Todd Stevenson, Shaun McDonald, Jono Lovel and Tim Friend are leading a side high on confidence and they will win enough of the ball around the middle to ensure Jamie Elliott and Damien Kilpatrick have enough opportunities to kick a winning score.

The Lakers are devoid of depth and will continually rely on Dean Harberger, Jason Kannar, Craig Britten and Jason Weir to win possessions around the middle of the ground to give their forwards any chance of posting a winning score.

Nathan Koenig and Brent Tough are capable of kicking goals for the Lakers but getting enough supply is the problem and this week will be no different as the Rams head into territory they never could have dreamed of.

Demons to rub salt Laharum host a shattered Rupanyup out at Cameron Reserve and expect the Demons to show no sympathy as they rub more salt into the Panthers wounds that are still wide open after a loss last week to the Rams.

Rupanyup coach Glenn Wyatt would be ropeable about the loss last week and will want his charges to show a bit more heart but stopping the twin peaks in Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla will be an unenviable task for a short Rupanyup back half.

SUV top of the Range for safety C

rash-test authority ANCAP is celebrating the latest round of five-star safety results, achieved across three different segments with the Range Rover large SUV, Mercedes-Benz A-Class small hatch and Toyota 86 sportscar.

The A-Class flew through the side impact and pole tests with flying colours, achieving a maximum score on both counts while being rated ‘good’ for whiplash protection.

HIGH AND MIGHTY: The Range Rover TDV6 scored highly for occupant protection but the leading edge of that clamshell bonnet is not good news for pedestrians.

Like the Range Rover, the A-Class flunked the upper leg impact section of the pedestrian protection test with zero points.

ANCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh said it no longer mattered what type of car consumers bought when it came to choosing for safety.

Its standard active bonnet, which automatically raises to provide a gap between the metalwork and hard components beneath when a pedestrian impact is detected, is likely to have helped pick up 12 points for child head protection.

“There’s now a multitude of makes, models and car types which have achieved the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating,” he said. “The range of cars we’ve released ratings for today exemplifies this.”

Impacts

High score The highest overall scorer was also the largest, heaviest and most expensive, the Range Rover TDV6 with an 36.19 points out of 37 – but all other variants remain unrated at this time.

It scored 15.19 out of 16 in the frontal offset test, with ‘good’ protection for the head, neck, upper legs and lower legs of both front occupants, while the driver’s chest protection was rated ‘acceptable’ – passenger chest protection was rated ‘good’.

The Rangie’s passenger compartment held its shape during the test, with ‘well controlled’ pedal and steering wheel movement.

All doors remained closed during the test and could be opened afterwards with normal effort.

Being a high-riding SUV, the Range Rover scored full marks in the side impact test and also got the maximum two points in the pole test, while whiplash protection was rated ‘good’.

For pedestrian protection the Rangie was rated ‘acceptable’ with a score of 22.62 out of 36.

Adult head, child head and lower leg impact protection scored highly but the bonnet’s leading edge posed a hazard, scoring zero points for upper leg impacts.

Compared with its larger, taller BClass sibling, which scored an almost perfect 36.78 out of 37, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class scored a relatively low 35.8 points – lower than the Volvo V40, 36.67 points.

Lower leg protection for both front occupants let the side down in the

frontal offset test, with 2.8 points out of a possible four for an ‘acceptable’ rating, leading to a total score of 14.8 out of 16 as protection for the head, neck, chest and upper legs each scored a maximum four points.

During the test the passenger compartment of the baby Benz maintained its shape, with ‘well controlled’ pedal and steering wheel movement.

All doors remained closed during the test and could be opened afterwards with normal effort.

However middling scores for adult head and lower leg impacts led to a total score of 24 out of 36, slightly up on the Rangie but still only enough for an ‘acceptable’ rating.

The A-Class picked up a plaudit for its standard collision prevention assistance technology, which gives the driver with visual and audible warnings of an imminent collision.

Both Range Rover and A-Class ratings were based on Euro NCAP data, but for the Toyota 86, ANCAP recycled the results from its Subaru BRZ test published in July last year.

SLAM DUNK: The Korean-designed Hyundai HND-9 coupe concept has million-dollar looks, and points to the design of the next Genesis road car.

cclaimed international car designer Joel Piaskowski has relocated to Australia as the new director of design for the Asia Pacific and Africa region.

Based at the regional product development centre at Ford Australia headquarters in Melbourne, Mr Piaskowski has effectively swapped roles with his predecessor Chris Svensson, who has moved to Detroit to take up Mr Piaskowski’s former role of exterior design director for The Americas.

MAIN EVENT: Joel Piaskowski confirmed his place among the international car design elite with his work on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, unveiled at the New York motor show in March 2008.

He reports directly to executive design director for Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa, Martin Smith, and also works closely with Shanghai-based vice-president of product development for the region, Kumar Galhotra.

Mr Piaskowski had been in the role since joining the US auto giant in October 2010, overseeing the exterior design of several key vehicles including the recent Atlas concept which previews the Blue Oval brand’s all-important nextgeneration F-Series pick-up.

Pulsar at 1996 prices T

he list of standard equipment for the entry-level Pulsar’s $19,990 asking price – Nissan was at pains to note that this is the same price the car was in 1996 – is quite competitive.

Then there’s the Pulsar’s size. It is a lot of metal for the money compared with others in its class, even out-stretching the i30 wagon in its dimensions.

Interior There’s no denying that the Thai-made Pulsar is built down to a price, even in mid-range ST-L specification. Velour-clad seats, abundant hard plastics, the odd bit of painted metal and the faux aluminiumlook trim do little to hide the fact.

But Nissan has done something to make things a little more presentable. For instance, there’s a soft-touch dash, and the door trim has cushioning velour trim where the elbow falls.

The functional instrument cluster is standard two-binnacle fare, trimmed in chrome and lit up with a richer-than-it-is white backlight at night. The only pain is a trip computer that insists on reporting fuel use in a confusing kilometres per litre rather than the more easily digestible litres per 100 kilometres. The driver’s manual gives no clues on how to change this.

The steering wheel includes reach and tilt steering that is fairly limited in range, but does allow taller drivers to get comfortable behind the wheel. A small footrest helps.

Rear-seat legroom is generous and at the better end of the class. A full-size adult will have no problems fitting in behind a tall adult in either of the two front seats, although the sloping roofline over the rear pews eats into head room. Storage is limited to a pair of seat-back pockets, and a small bottle holder recessed into either door. The centre armrest folds down to reveal an extra pair of cupholders.

Where the interior falls down, though, is in versatility. The Pulsar has a big 510-litre boot that outclasses its competitors, but buy any flat-pack furniture and the lack of a split-fold rear seat will have you paying extra for delivery. The centre armrest hides a narrow ski port, but it is little compensation.

The Pulsar is no dynamic leader. Body roll and a slow-to-recover suspension setup mean quick changes in direction lack the responsiveness of the cut-price smallclass leader, the Mazda3.

Engine and transmission Nissan has fitted the Pulsar with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the default powerplant across the range.

On paper, it pushes only 96kW and 174Nm to the front wheels, compared with the Corolla’s 100kW and 175Nm, and the stronger-selling Mazda3’s 108kW/182Nm mix from its older 2.0-litre engine, or 113kW/194Nm from its new, more powerful and fuel-efficient Skyactiv mill.

Even Hyundai’s i30 outshines it with 110kW/178Nm from its 1.8-litre engine.

While the opposition includes a diesel engine in its options, the Pulsar does not.

One confusing point is the boot release button, which sits right alongside the fuel flap release under the dash in front of the driver’s right knee. Thankfully, the fuel filler flap is on the same side of the car as the driver’s door, so if you pull the wrong lever it’s easy to remedy.

But the Pulsar’s more minimalist performance numbers combine with a lithe 1280-kilogram kerb weight to deliver what turns out to be reasonable on-road performance. However, tap the engine’s performance and it becomes a bit rowdy as revs rise to meet the challenge.

Small-item storage is a bit scarce, so stashing a mobile phone, wallet and purse is a bit of a challenge. The alternatives are the small door pockets, the rather shallow glovebox, a small flip-up cubby on the centre stack, or the lidded cupholders in between the front seats.

At low speeds, the Pulsar feels like a much richer car. Ride on the 16-inch wheels is surprisingly supple and quiet, giving a level of refinement that is surprising in this class.

A lidded centre console bin is set well back from the front seats, and requires an uncomfortable twist to access. Plugging something into the USB port hidden away inside it is definitely best left for when the Pulsar is parked. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls that interact with music stored on a smartphone are a big help in this respect.

Ride and handling

As speeds rise, though, the experience sours a bit. The suspension will slap over the smaller imperfections on the road surface, and bigger bumps transfer quite harshly into the cabin.

The electrically assisted rack and pinion steering is light enough in city driving, and weights up as speeds rise to give an acceptable level of feedback. However, at freeway speeds the steering needs constant small corrections to keep it pointing in the right direction, which can become tiresome on a long trip.

The engine’s class-lagging performance won’t often worry the Pulsar’s stability control system. Deliberately push it too hard into a corner and the car’s electronic brains allow for the nose to run wide as the front wheels lose grip, dissolving into easily controlled understeer.

Disc brakes front and rear provide enough stopping power without being grabby.

Safety and servicing There’s no official independent crash test rating out yet for the Pulsar -- the Tiida it replaces was rated only four stars out of five -- but default safety across the range runs to a class-competitive six airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes.

Nissan gives the Pulsar a standard threeyear, 100,000-kilometre warranty, and even throws in some roadside assistance should the Pulsar break down.

The car-maker offers six years of capped-price servicing, ranging from $212.51 for minor work to a worst-case $529.05.

Verdict More buyers than ever are tipping their money into small cars, so having some attributes that stand out in an increasingly competitive and crowded slice of the market is paramount.

In this instance, Pulsar can trade on its interior space, and around-town refinement. If space is a premium, then you’re going to have to be prepared to make some compromises, including interior versatility and longer-haul comfort.

Sleek new Cerato sedan arrives T

he third generation of Kia’s all-important small car has come a long way from the sedan it has replaced, evolving into a model the Korean brand hopes will help it grow market share as buyers step up from lighter cars, or down from larger ones.

While boot room has increased, the use of more high-strength steel has helped Kia to shed between 42 to 67 kilograms of bulk, depending on the model variant.

For safety, six airbags, including head-protecting side curtain airbags, are standard across the Cerato sedan range, while every seat has a seatbelt reminder that can alert the driver if someone is not plugged in.

As expected, Kia has maintained a starting price of $19,990 for the four-door, matching key rivals such as the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Pulsar – and slightly undercutting others in Australia’s biggest market segment – while adding value with more equipment and other selling points.

Indeed, the Cerato is now longer, wider and lower to the ground than the model it replaces, while outside it has matured into something you could imagine showing off proudly to the neighbours.

For the same-as-before money, you now get Kia’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW of power and 178Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed manual, or for $2000 extra, a six-speed automatic gearbox.

In one respect that is a backward step from the previous model, which kicked the range off with a 115kW version of the now-superseded 2.0-litre engine, but a big leap forward in terms of official combined-cycle fuel economy, which falls from 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the manual and 7.7L/100km for the auto to just 6.6L/100km for the manual, or 7.1L/100km for the auto.

tion technology, was included in the Australian line-up because it is sold in other markets where fuel quality is an issue. Dirty fuel and fuel injection, it appears, don’t mix.

The base S model sits on 16-inch steel wheels sporting Nexus tyres, and unusually for an entry-level car in this segment, standard kit also includes foglights, front corner and rear parking sensors, cruise control and a folding key.

New across the range is what Kia calls a ‘flex steer’ steering system. It uses an electrically assisted steering servo to help lighten the load for drivers, but Kia has given it three different settings – comfort, normal and sport – so drivers can determine how much assistance they need.

Like the suspension, the flex steer system has been tuned specifically to Australian tastes, Kia says.

The cheapest model also gets enhancements that have traditionally been reserved for higher-priced versions, including body-coloured bumpers, doorhandles and wing mirrors, and power windows all around, including an auto up-down function for the driver.

The driver’s seat has six-way manual adjustment, while the steering wheel includes adjustment for both reach and rake.

The audio system feeds out to six speakers, and includes a USB with auxiliary input, and a Bluetooth phone connection that the driver can control from the steering wheel.

Kia claims the boot is larger than before, gaining six litres over the sedan it replaces to post a 421-litre space. It is made more useful using a 60/40 split-fold rear seatback that rolls forward at the pull of a lever hidden in the boot.

Stepping up to the $23,990 mid-range Si replaces the utilitarian interior of the entry-level model with something a bit more special, plus a new 2.0-litre direct-injection engine.

The four-cylinder ‘GDi’ engine produces 129kW/209Nm and returns fuel economy of 7.4L/100km with either the standard manual gearbox or optional automatic.

Naturally, the 2.0 GDi also offers improved acceleration over the 1.8, reaching 100km/h from standstill in 8.5 seconds compared to the 1.8’s 9.3 seconds. Top speed is 210km/h, up from 205km/h on the 1.8.

Kia’s new sedan will sell alongside the current hatchback version until the latter is replaced mid-year. Meanwhile, the current Cerato Koup two-door version will remain on sale in Australia until late this year, when the recently rolled out new model reaches our shores.

Power up, efficiency down for revised CR-Z Honda’s facelifted CR-Z hybrid coupe has landed in Australia with more power, but a subsequent slight increase in fuel consumption over the previous version.

STYLE UPGRADE: Honda’s 2013 CR-Z gets a slight makeover with an updated front bumper and grille and restyled tail-lights.

The price of entry is also higher, jumping to $38,490 plus on-road costs compared to the now discontinued $34,990 Sport version of its predecessor.

In six-speed manual guise, combined power for the Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system increases from 91kW to 100kW with torque up from 174Nm to 190Nm. The CVT version is up to 99kW/172Nm – 5Nm more than before.

But the boost in hybrid power has also seen an increase in fuel consumption with the manual CR-Z sipping 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle, up from 5.0L/100km, while the CVT is up by 0.3L/100km to 5.0L/100km.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder powertrain is carried over from the original CR-Z, but Honda has replaced the nickel-metal hydride battery with a lighter and more powerful lithiumion unit that has assisted with the increase in power.

Previously available for $34,990 in entry-level Sport guise and $40,790 for the Luxury model, the 2013 CR-Z is now available in one specification only, priced at $38,490 for the manual and $40,790 for the CVT.

As previously reported, Honda has upped the sporting credentials of the CR-Z by adding a Plus Sport button that gives the driver the option of a surge in acceleration for up to 10 seconds.

This can only be achieved if the battery is over 50 percent charged and can be engaged while in economy, normal or sport driving mode.

Honda Australia director Stephen Collins said the updates to the CR-Z will appeal to sports car buyers.

“With a new look, a host of new features and more power, the CR-Z is a great proposition for our customers,” he said.

Subtle styling updates to the CR-Z include a redesigned front bumper and grille and blue accents added to the LED tail-lights.

The cabin gets white stitching and new LED lights and Honda has added two new exterior colours – Northern Lights Violet and Polished Metal.

A Honda spokesperson said the specification levels of the 2013 CR-Z were more closely aligned with the outgoing Luxury variant than the Sport.
