One woman was killed every week, on average, in Australia, as a result of intimate partner violence, in the past 12 months. One in three women experience physical and-or sexual violence, perpetrated by someone known to them. Enough is enough. It is time to take a stand. #notviolentnotsilent

Stamp out violence W

immera Police Superintendent Paul Margetts has called on the region’s men to help stamp out violence against women.

Mr Margetts has encouraged Wimmera residents – particularly men – to participate in Wimmera White Ribbon Committee’s Walk Against Violence in Horsham on Friday. White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women. The campaign recognises the positive role men can play in pre-

venting violence against women, based on the understanding most men are not violent. It offers men opportunities to speak out against violence against women, challenging the attitudes and behaviours of a minority of men who use or condone violence against women. Mr Margetts will speak at a rally at May Park following the walk about how policing of family violence has changed in the past 30 years. “Men can really influence how we think and behave in relation to violence against women,” he said.

“I believe the behaviour we walk past is the standard we set for ourselves. “I want men to think of their own standards. I want them to think about the women they are close to in their lives – whether it be their wife, mother, girlfriend or daughter – and how they would expect those women to be treated.” Mr Margetts asked men to consider how they would feel if they witnessed inappropriate comments or behaviour towards a woman who was close to them. “It’s about men first identifying there is inappropriate behaviour,

and to then call it at the time, in a way that’s safe for themselves,” he said. “If we don’t take any action, then nothing will change.” One of six Wimmera White Ribbon ambassadors, Yarriambiack Shire Council chief executive Ray Campling said he was shocked at family violence statistics, particularly in relation to the rural sector. “I thought enough was enough,” he said. “You know I originally thought this was a blue-collar crime but it really has no boundaries and occurs across all walks of life.

“Many people have joined in saying enough is enough and, now that it is being highlighted, they are no longer standing by and accepting it.” Fellow ambassadors Geoff Miller and Paul Beltz agreed that unlike many issues, people could make a difference in family violence and violence against women situations. They echoed each other’s sentiments: “This is something preventable and something we can eliminate. It is completely in our powers to do something about it.” • For a special White Ribbon Day report, see pages 6 and 7.
