ALP cash for college
T
he Rudd Labor Government has pledged to pump $2.2-million into upgrading and expanding Longerenong College near Horsham. The Sunday announcement came only days after Nationals candidate Andrew Broad, after a tour of the college, told The Weekly Advertiser that he would campaign heavily for the upgrade. Regional Australia Minister Catherine King said the project would benefit the community and ‘help build a stronger future’. “Australia’s agriculture sector is crucial to the nation’s prosperity. This grant will improve and expand the college’s
student-specific accommodation, ensuring regional students will have access to housing while they gain valuable skills and qualifications,” she said. The money will go to refurbishing student rooms, providing quality facilities, disability access, communal study areas, a recreation centre and a college kitchen. It will also fund an electronic security system for college residents. Labor candidate for Mallee Lydia Senior said the funding was a well-deserved win for the community and region. “It’s incredibly important that students have adequate, affordable accommodation facilities so they can put their energy into studying to the best of

their ability,” Ms Senior said. Mr Broad said Australia needed to build capacity in its agricultural industry and Longerenong was well placed to play a major role. He said he had visited the college during its open day and had been impressed with student enthusiasm and excited by the school’s direction and potential.
Critical need
But he added that he also saw a critical need for significant investment, particularly in student dormitories. “If we’re going to be the food capital of the Asia Pacific region we’re going to have to develop adequate and appropriate training and education facilities
in the industry. Longy is well placed to train the people for this future,” he said. “There has been a significant under-investment in this area. We’re talking about real hands-on training at the college and now it has Bayer applying cutting-edge science at the site. This overlaps into study areas. And frankly, no other university is ever going to get 1070 hectares of prime agricultural land like Longerenong has to work on with its courses. “The college deserves significant investment and as a country we have to play to our strengths such as agriculture. “It’s a blight on our country that agricultural education has been let go as long as it has.”

What’s on
Dog amnesty, a friendly reminder
Council Meeting
Council has announced an amnesty until the end of August 2013, so this is a friendly reminder, if you have a dog or cat that has not been registered previously, or you have not renewed the registration, no action will be taken against you if you take out registration by August 30, 2013.
Community Action Planning is an approach that is designed to bring people together to develop visions, set key priorities and establish needs that are medium to long term actions for their local township. A community plan involves bringing groups and individuals together to » Explore the issues, develop agreed courses of action and capture ways to build on the key strengths and attributes of an area from the inside out. » Identify and strengthen existing and future partnerships with the key aim of working together to implement action plans. » Engage community by exploring values that define what is important to the town and describe a shared community vision for the future. » Work with a core planning group to develop and lead community actions; increase leadership and advocacy skills to all levels of government. » Link in relevant strategic plans that relate to overall vision for the shire, region and state. » Celebrate and identify unique strengths that make up a town. » Community Action Planning aims to support community members and its leaders to become active, confident and resilient members. It aims to support communities to develop visions for their communities’ future and that of the broader region within the municipality. Through community planning members will be able to contribute to and be involved in decisions making processes that affect their township.
After August, Council will conduct another audit of the registration data base, then door knock the houses where animals are listed as living. If any unregistered animal is located, Local Laws Officers will issue a fine of $289.00. Council urges pet owners to take up this opportunity and get their animals registered before the end of August 2013. Registering and microchipping your dog allows your dog to be returned to you if it wanders from your home.

This area is very popular with walkers and runners and this construction will improve safety in a section where users were running and walking on the adjacent road.
Council has introduced a more flexible way to pay your rates and charges. With the inclusion of the new direct debit system you can now pay your rates on a monthly or fortnightly basis or by four equal instalments. The full payment of rates are no longer payable on the February 15, 2014. This was a decision made by Council when it reviewed the rating strategy in 2013. Moving to a mandatory instalment option may assist a ratepayer’s ability to pay accounts as they fall due. There were a number of ratepayers who defaulted on the February 2013 payment that commented the amount of rates is too much to cope with at one time. Most other accounts (electricity, gas, telephone and water) are now being issued on a monthly or quarterly basis. The introduction of direct debits will allow ratepayers to spread the cost of rates over the year.

REGIONAL TASTE: Kiwi chef Al Brown is pictured with Richard Seymour of Mt Zero Olive Grove. Picture: IMAGINATION TELEVISION
Grampians on a plate
The natural produce and scenery of the Grampians feature in a new food-travel series airing in New Zealand. Kiwi chef Al Brown hosts the new show, ‘Dishing up Australia with Al Brown’, which takes New Zealand viewers on a culinary journey across Australia, including restaurants and farms near the Grampians. Brown’s first stop in the Grampians is the Royal Mail Hotel, where the ingredients for his meal come straight from the restaurant’s garden He then travels to one of Australia’s oldest olive groves, Mount Zero Olive Grove, a self-sustaining, biodynamic farm, before visiting Grampians Pure Sheep Dairy between Glenthompson and Dunkeld to try award-winning cheese and yoghurt. “You’d be foolish not to get amongst it,” he says of his trip to regional Victoria as he heads into the heart of Grampians National Park to cook his final dish. Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew
McEvoy said using well-known and respected Kiwis to help tell Australia’s stories was a strategy that worked well. “The Grampians area is home to world-class restaurants and beautiful, rich Australian produce and it’s fantastic to have celebrated chef Al Brown hunt out the region’s delicacies for his New Zealand viewers,” Mr McEvoy said. “Tourism Australia has been working to tell the story of Australia and ‘Dishing up Australia with Al Brown’ allows Kiwi viewers to get a taste for the incredible produce and stunning landscape of the Grampians just a short drive out of Melbourne. The episode also features Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Markets, with Al sampling a grass-fed cut of beef from Hopkins River Beef. The 10-part series features a diverse range of culinary experiences in stunning settings throughout Australia and has been produced by leading New Zealand production company, Imagination for TVNZ.
August 30 date for Mallee plan
P
almer United candidate for Mallee Mark Cory plans to release his 16-point plan for the electorate on August 30.
The Red Cliffs business owner said the plan would specifically target the needs of Mallee and represent an end to more than half a decade of ‘representative mothballing’. He said he was keeping details of the plan close to his chest until the end of the month because of a risk of rival parties ‘hijacking’ concepts and blurring messages come the election. “It’s happened in the past with the blatant hijacking by Labor of my before-and-after school program that if done properly could have benefited every parent in our electorate. Now however Labor has cost the program any level of credibility,” he said. “It’s important that voters know exactly what each representative and their parties are putting forward.” Mr Cory said his plan would be to ‘create massive economic growth, bring hundreds of jobs
POLITICAL PLAN: Mark Cory
to and realise the potential of the electorate’. He said his plan would be about working directly with projects that would stimulate electorate growth. “To give one example, there is a business in the electorate that employs 30 people and is looking for a $100,000 grant to upsize its machinery. With the extra machinery that business will be able to employ a further 40 tax-paying people. I call supporting this type of project an investment,” he said. “It’s about adopting commonsense practices, to get the Mallee economy moving. I believe we’ve been subject to 64 years of mothballing and been run-
ning at 20 to 30 percent of our potential.” Mr Cory stressed a need for someone to put the Mallee electorate before party politics during parliamentary debate. “What I can tell you is that we need a leader in this electorate to take the initiative, to be willing to put their head on the chopping block. The House of Representatives is exactly that, electorate representatives and when it comes to issues such as the sale of Grain Corp they would have to forcibly remove me from the house I would be kicking up such a stink.” Mr Cory said people had become so used to voting a particular way in the electorate that that some believed it was already over and were referring to the Mallee result as a Nationals ‘coronation’. “People have to ask themselves why?” he said. “People have also asked me if we are politically right or left. Well I can declare that we’re straight down the middle commonsense.”

This is the Australian Government’s message for anyone associated with people smuggling:
K

YOU WON’T BE SETTLED IN AUSTRALIA
Mr Cirillo said if elected on September 7 he would work hard to ensure he addressed the issue. He said he would also work to secure funding for the continuation of the Western Highway duplication and lobby to bring Wimmera meteorological services ‘into the 21st century’. “Throughout the Mallee as a whole I believe some of the other issues that need to be dealt with include stopping the sale of public and significant national assets such as Grain Corp, eliminating the Carbon Tax and replacing an Emissions Trading Scheme with a promotion of efficient use of bio-fuels,” he said. Mr Cirillo said he also wanted to address rising costs for business, change the 2007 Federal Water Act, promote fair instead of free trade and work to develop rail infrastructure to meet the electorate’s freight needs. He said he also wanted electorate health, educa-

Mr Cirillo, from Mildura, with a building-trade background but now running a horticultural property with his family, has listed the following reasons for his candidacy:To provide real representation; to give rural voters a voice; to stop the loss of Mallee electorate services; to ensure prosperity for future generations; to give people a representative who will always vote in the interests of the Mallee electorate; and to claw back security of water supply to a guaranteed level of sufficiency for all users. “I believe that the major parties have let us down badly and if we continue along this line we won’t just get more of the same, we’ll get worse,” he said.

gricultural authorities are urging broadacre cropping farmers to check their paddocks after reports of disease appearing earlier than usual this season.
The warning comes from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries after the incidence of yellow leaf spot, spot form of net blotch, scald and ascochyta. Department pathologist Frank Henry said the damp winter conditions were ideal for many foliar diseases. “With frequent rain this season we are seeing some crop diseases, in particular stubble-borne diseases, earlier than in previous years,” Mr Henry said.

By DEAN LAWSON
f we ever need confirmation of how hard we must work to increase broader understanding of the Wimmera-Mallee we need only mix with visiting volunteers at one of our regional landscape plant-out events.
The annual Hindmarsh, Yarrilinks and Project Platypus plant-outs, involving people travelling to our part of Australia to plant thousands of trees, draw a diverse range of people. Teenagers, impressionable university students, academics, business people, local government representatives and retirees, many of them from metro-
EDITORIAL politan backgrounds, suddenly find themselves rubbing shoulders with Wimmera farmers. What can be surprising in chatting with these enthusiastic visitors, who in many cases live only few hours down the road by car, is how little they actually know about our region. For example, one wide-eyed university graduate from inner Melbourne had been unaware there was actually a region called the Wimmera before her visit. She vaguely knew about the Mallee from daily television weather reports. Another, a highly successful
Melbourne businessman, was curious about how the Wimmera River reached the sea? Of course it doesn’t, we explained, it runs inland. And so on! The revelations that unveiled around the campfires at Little Desert Nature Lodge at Winiam after these volunteers had put their tools down last weekend was staggering. It provided a clear need for us, regardless of how we fit into the ‘bigger picture’, to never fall into the trap of assuming that we are ever automaticfally in front of the national consciousness. It also put into bold perspective why Wimmera Development Association’s ‘Wimmera
– everything you need’ promotion is a must and underlined that there would always be a need for us to elbow our way through the crowd. It emphasised why having a presence at the Victoria Living Expo in Melbourne each year is important and galvanised reasons why Nhill is presenting an open weekend in October. Of course as we mixed with the visitors, chatting about random issues and circumstances, there came the revelation that many of us also needed to know a lot more about them as well. We can only be a better people for venturing beyond our bubbles.

ural and the Wimmera are words rarely included in world education conferences. But they were in Marrakesh in the northern African country of Morocco. Warracknabeal environmental educator Jeanie Clark took resources developed in the Wimmera-Mallee created last year to Marrakesh for the 2013 World Environmental Educators Congress. Ms Clark said she felt the Wimmera material could contribute to several issues at the congress, which had the theme ‘Environmental Education in Cities and Rural Areas: Seeking Greater Harmony’. “One was how to provide ways to see the world from different viewpoints, including from rural experiences, which are often missing today, especially in this rapidly urbanising world,” she said. “Another was finding ways to encourage imagination and wisdom to face environmental challenges, especially for children growing up in cities.” The material Ms Clark took to the conference, which attracted 2400 people from 100 countries, included picture books created as part of State Government-backed Hopetoun’s St Joseph’s Primary School student project last year
each chose a book. It was wonderful seeing the reactions from the children as well as the teachers. “Because most of the teachers I shared the books with did not have English as their first language, the authentic ‘children’s English’ was especially attractive.

on the theme ‘Yes we can farm sustainably’. “I shared these at a round-table discussion and informally with people I met,” she said. “It was exciting seeing the international interest in these noncommercial books, written and illustrated by children, which can be downloaded from the school website,” she said. “In preparing for the congress, St Joseph’s Primary School provided me with a copy of each of their books for the session and to give away to a rural school. “A couple of the Moroccan teachers from rural schools were with their students at the congress they
Ms Clark also took a Commonwealth Government-backed Read4Nature concept, which involved eight Wimmera Regional Library Corporation branches last year. “I took Read4Nature to the congress because it provides a way to get more science from a picture book when reading to or with children and to extend their imagination and environmental concepts,” she said. “Talks were presented in groups of five, so you learnt about five projects or issues from across the globe in these sessions. My talk used Australian bush stories for examples, because the concepts were applicable to any picture book, be they about farms, forests, towns, seas, and for people from any place, anywhere, rural or urban.” Ms Clark has worked in environmental education in the Wimmera for more than 30 years. This week is Australian Book Week.
DOING THE ROUNDS: Liberal candidate Chris Crewther, right, chats with Liberal Party Wimmera branch president John Freimanis in Horsham. Picture: JAMES FIDLER
Politics is like football
The Wimmera’s only candidate for the approaching federal election Chris Crewther has compared working within a political party environment with a football team. The Liberals representative said he was passionate about becoming a strong advocate for his region while understanding the need to work within a strong team. “If you think about it, the success of a football team comes down to independent thinking and the skills of individuals while, at the same time, everyone working together as a team,” he said. “I consider it the same in a political party room. I won’t be shying away from having my say.” Mr Crewther is among 12 Mallee candidates trying to rest political control of the electorate away from the Nationals.
Nationals-Country party representatives have been in control of the seat for 64 years. Mr Crewther has strong family connections in the Wimmera- Mallee and Mildura district, and has been busy trying to familiarise himself with voters at forums across the region. “I’m aiming to win the seat in my own right on primary votes,” he said. Mr Crewther has drawn the number-one spot on the ballot paper. Others in order are, Palmer United Party’s Mark Cory, Australian Sex Party’s Amy Mulcahy, Katter’s Australian Party’s Vince Cirillo, Citizens Electoral Council’s Chris Lahy, independent Allen Ridgeway, The Green’s Jane McAllister, Rise Up Australia’s Tim Middleton, Family First’s Neil Buller, Nationals’ Andrew Broad, Country Alliance’s Michael Coldham and Labor’s Lydia Senior.
It’s not a new fire levy, it’s a fairer fire levy. On 1 July 2013, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the Victorian Government is replacing the old fire services levy with a fairer system. Rather than being added to insurance premiums, the levy will now be collected with council rates. This means all property owners contribute a fair share to the Country Fire Authority or the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The levy is a fixed charge of $100 for residential properties and $200 for non-residential properties, plus a variable charge based on the property’s capital improved value. All funds will go towards supporting Victoria’s fire services. GST and stamp duty charged on the old levy have been removed and, for the first time, eligible pensioners and veterans will receive a $50 concession. These reforms will save households and business around $100 million a year.

political scramble for votes for the seat of Mallee has led to candidates accusing others of inappropriate promotional tactics.
Nationals candidate Andrew Broad has fired off a broadside at Chris Crewther’s Liberal camp for adopting an automated telephone campaign throughout the region At the same time, Palmer United Party’s Mark Cory has asked if authorities will clamp down on Nationals supporters illegally attaching signs to roadside trees. Mr Broad will push to extend a ‘Do Not Call’ register to political parties after the Liberals launched the automated telephone campaign on Sunday night. “Between 6pm and 7pm on Sunday night the Liberal Party distributed a pre-recorded ‘robocall’ to households in Mallee promoting their candidate,” Mr Broad said. “Many people were outraged by this invasion of privacy,” he said. “In my opinion it reinforces just how out of touch they are with country people who value Sunday night as family time.
“It’s time we defended the home as a place of privacy. In the last few weeks residents of the Wimmera, Mallee and Mildura regions have expressed to me how annoying it can be to receive unwarranted sales calls on weekends and late at night,” Mr Broad said. “Telemarking calls can be especially confronting for older people as well as parents with young families. “The Nationals believe that families are the cornerstones of a strong society and that sharing a meal is important family time that should be enjoyed without interruption.” A Do Not Call register restricting telemarketers from calling private homes has been in place since 2007. Mr Cory, meanwhile, asked: “Why is it acceptable for one candidate to break the rules of campaigning? It is illegal to attach any sign to a roadside tree. “This has been repeated through Mallee so many times I have lost count. “Will the candidate remove them or will the proper authorities take action and fine accordingly or does the Nationals candidate think he is above the rules which govern our campaigns.”

Find big benefits in a little gratitude

A
ward-winning film-maker and motivational speaker Toni Powell will present The 30 Day Gratitude Challenge for Business Horsham next Monday.

The presentation, Business Horsham’s major training event for the year, will feature a twohour seminar and half-day workshop. The 30 Day Gratitude Challenge is a program that uses the simple act of ‘gratitude’ to stimulate and develop relationships and build teams. Ms Powell has presented the program to groups and organisations around the world.in engagements around the world. Ms Powell said gratitude had the ‘rather extraordinary’ power to change most aspect of life in surprising ways. “When gratitude is practiced in the workplace, relationships are transformed, complaints are minimised, and satisfaction levels skyrocket. This effect is profound and long-lasting,” she said. “The 30 Day Gratitude Challenge is a powerful

program that takes how people look at the world and turns it up side down and, in the process, builds a more creative, healthier and proactive team. “ It often seems to me that when people think about gratitude, especially at work, they are thinking of a reward program or maybe something ‘soft’
and touchy feely. This is a program that surprises the toughest miners and the most successful CEOs. It is practical and the aftereffects can be seen on the bottom line, the workplace culture and the home. “If you are after change in your life, your business, your marriage, your relationships - then make The
30 Day Gratitude Challenge a priority – I promise you will be delighted you came along” She said she had been impressed by the ‘foresight and innovation’ of Business Horsham. “They are on to the cutting edge of what is happening in training worldwide. The science around gratitude is convincing and the practice is life changing yet this is a new area that the corporates are just discovering,” she said. “I usually deliver this program to the biggest companies in Australia so it is exciting for me to be able to share with a group of different local businesses at once. To have gratitude training offered to multiple businesses as well as to the town as a whole is a brilliant idea the impact for Horsham could be profound. I look forward to visiting such an innovative town.” The two-hour seminar costs $10 and the half-day workshop $44 to members and $66 to non-members. UPGRADE: A wastewater treatment plant upgrade will benefit horse racing at Warracknbeal.
Plant’s upgrade will help racing
W
arracknabeal Racecourse will be a major beneficiary of a $4.4-million upgrade of Warracknabeal’s wastewater treatment plant.
Victorian Water Minister Peter Walsh who visited the course last week, said the upgrade would provide a quality surface for years to come. Mr Walsh said recycled water piped from the treatment plant was being used to maintain 3.5-hectares of track surface and surrounding area. “The ability to water and maintain the track surface is vital to racing,” Mr Walsh said. “The recycled water from this plant helps keep the track and grounds green even during the driest spells, and ensures the facility remains an important
gathering place for the community.” The Warracknabeal Racecourse attracts more than 4000 people a year to race meetings and Riding for the Disabled Association, involving nine clients, eight horses and 25 volunteers, also use the facilities.
Golf club
Mr Walsh said the upgrade would also benefit the Warracknabeal Golf Club, which would use the recycled water for its greens. He said the new plant had significantly reduced odour emissions in Warracknabeal and was able to maintain the quality of re-use water due to reduced evaporation rates and lower salt levels. “The plant uses fully auto-

mated and flexible technology, which provides many advantages. It can also be easily upgraded to achieve higher reuse water standards if required for future applications,” he said. “The innovative technology being used at Warracknabeal and another plant in St Arnaud is the first of its kind in Australia.” Mr Walsh said water corporation GWMWater used Wimmera contractors for the project, which helped reduce construction costs and help with regional employment and skill development. Contractors CHS Group Australia, Midbrook, Friberg Fabrications and Glover Earthmoving were involved in the project.

Tool helps with soil
Soil specialist Declan McDonald is confident a new soilmanagement tool will give farmers a deeper understanding of their soils. Mr McDonald has demonstrated the Visual Soil Assessment tool during an on-farm demonstration. “The VSA is a hands-on method that cleverly pulls together the basic elements of good soil management into an easy-touse evaluation tool that allows farmers to score their soil condition, and pasture or crop condition,” he said. Mr McDonald said the VSA manual guided landholders through a process that assigned a score for each soil property. Scores were tallied to reflect the overall quality of the soil.

Wimmera Internship Program Expressions of Interest
Wimmera Development Association (WDA) is offering a work placement opportunity for University students, focusing on skill shortages in the region. The program seeks to expose students to the employment opportunities in the region, and the advantages of living in the Wimmera Southern Mallee. WDA is seeking interest from regional businesses to place students in the region. Businesses will be required to employ the students on minimum wages, provide supervision and relevant work experiences. Town Planning, Engineering, Building Surveying and Accounting students from La Trobe and Ballarat Universities will be matched with regional businesses for work placement between November 2012 and March 2013. Students will be supported by WDA with accommodation subsidies. The Weekly Advertiser editor Dean Lawson announced another $30,000 in funding for the event on behalf of network owner Geoff Handbury during a plantout dinner at Little Desert Nature Lodge at Winiam. The latest funding takes the overall ACE Radio contribution to the annual plantout program since it started 16 years ago to about $350,000. A workforce of more than 240 volunteers from across Victoria and beyond braved cold, wet and windy conditions to plant about 15,000 trees at Hindmarsh Shire sites near Dimboola last weekend. Many of the volunteers were from Melbourne and some, who have made an annual pilgrimage since the event started, came from interstate or overseas. Project Hindmarsh workgroup manager and farmer Brett Wheaton said interest in the event had never been stronger. “It just continues to grow. There is a real passion, not only from the planters who come to the Wimmera but also the farmers involved in the project,” he said. Mr Wheaton, speaking as tired but merry volunteers sat around huge campfires and listened to the music of Rainbow band The Lazy Farmer’s Sons, agreed that the event had gone beyond a simple tree-planting project. “Here we are on a cold, rainy night but people are here really enjoying themselves,” he said.. “They are learning about farming and farmers, are keen to find out about the food they eat and where it comes from and having a genuine interest, passion and belief in what they’re doing.” The Hindmarsh weekend is one of three annual landscape-scale Landcare planting projects in the Wimmera catchment. The others are part of Yarrilinks in Yarriambiack Shire and Project Platypus in the upper catchment.

Wimmera Girl Guides have leapt into action this month as part of an annual month of community help and fund-raising. During August Action, Girl Guides go to work for specific causes, raising money
through various activities. This year half the money each group raises will go to Wildlife Australia. Each group can decide how to use the other half. Guides of the Third Horsham Brownie Guide Unit will raise
money by doing odd jobs and will split money on expenses for their next camp and the Royal Children’s Hospital. People can support the unit can call Marianne Gilbert on 0408 503525.
Crops analysed
I
t’s a problem that challenges farmers and their advisers. The rain was good, the management seemed sound so why did wheat fail to perform?
Department of Environment and Primary Industries scientists are aiming to find answers as they put the agronomic microscope over 50 Wimmera paddocks this winter. In an Australian first, the research will include wheat crops across 50 paddocks in a 50 to 70-kilometre radius of Horsham. Project leader in Horsham Professor Roger Armstrong said water was the primary limitation to dryland cropping but there were many ques-
tions about the impact of other factors. “A lot of people will blame disease, weeds, crop variety, the sowing time and nutrients. Farmers often know they’ve got a problem but they get bombarded with a range of explanations,” he said. “Just as importantly, they often don’t know the relative importance of particular factors on yields so are unsure of how they should prioritise their efforts, in terms of time and dollars. “What we want to do is analyse these crops, taking into account variables such as environment, soil toxicity and nutrient, management such as sowing time, tillage and stubble management, pests and disease and variety.”

Open invitation to awards night
G
rampians-Pyrenees business owners have an open invitation to celebrate their achievements at a gala dinner in Avoca on Friday week.
Pyrenees Shire Council is hosting the 2013 Powercor Grampians Pyrenees Business Achievement Awards and mayor Cr Michael O’Connor said the event represented an opportunity for the business community to network, listen to a guest speaker and enjoy a great night out. Cr O’Connor said judges had announced finalists earlier this month after the awards attracted 38 entries across 12 categories. All businesses entered in the awards are eligible to win a People’s Choice Award, which carries a prize of a lucrative television advertising package. The public voted on the People’s Choice Award via an online survey. Cr O’Connor said the dinner included a three-course meal featuring regional produce as well as Pyrenees wines, live entertainment and guest speaker David Matthews. “Even if your business hasn’t entered the awards, the dinner is well worth attending for the networking opportunities as well as giving you a chance to sup-

Guest speaker
Cr O’Connor said guest speaker and Wimmera Grain Director David Matthews had been a key driver in developing the Bendigo Bank’s community bank model when larger banks closed their doors on his town of Rupanyup during the 1990s. “David’s work helped lead to the establishment of Australia’s first community bank branch and today there are more than 300 across the country,” he said. “David is now a Bendigo Bank board member and cochairman of the Community Bank Strategic Advisory Board, and on the night will speak
about empowering local communities to make things happen. “It’s the perfect subject for a room full of business people from small communities - people who have the experience, influence and commitment to help future-proof their towns.” Pyrenees and Northern Grampians shire and Ararat Rural City councils organise the awards every two years with the three councils rotating hosting duties. The awards have been running since 2003. Ararat will host the next event in 2015. Tickets for the gala Dinner are $77 and people can book them by phoning 5349 1153 or emailing events@pyrenees. vic.gov.au. Ticket sales close at 5pm this Friday.

Praise for veterans
State Veterans Affairs Minister Hugh Delahunty has used a ceremony at Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance to praise and acknowledged the contribution and sacrifice of Australian service personnel during the Vietnam War. Representing Premier Denis Napthine Mr Delahunty said the service marked 51 years since Australia answered South Vietnam’s call for help alongFRAMEWORK: Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble, third from left with Victorian Premier Denis Napthine, is pictured with other municipal leaders on the website of Victorian Regional Cities, which has released a new regional growth framework to cope with population growth.
Planning framework will help with growth
H
orsham and Victoria’s nine other major Victorian regional cities can now access a purpose-built planning framework to help leaders prepare for an expected population boom in the next 20 years.
Victorian Regional Cities, representing the centres, has released the framework, which will allow local government to gain a clear understanding of infrastructure and service levels and develop investment plans. It has developed the Regional Cities Victoria Growth Framework to cope with a predicted
increase of more than one million people across country Victoria. The framework provides a process for each city to identify priorities for investment in services and infrastructure. It also produces a strong evidence base that the cities can draw on when seeking government funding or private investment. RCV represents Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Latrobe, Mildura, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Warrnambool and Wodonga as well as Horsham. The framework has three core parts: • A resource paper explaining the economic theory underly-
ing regional city growth • A set of growth indicators enabling each regional city to determine its position and to set growth benchmarks • A diagnostics tool each regional city can use to set targets and priorities. RCV chairman Cr Mark Byatt said Framework would position regional cities to achieve their full potential as thriving communities that offered more jobs, better services and attractive investment opportunities. “It embodies the concept of Victoria as a ‘state of cities’, a vision RCV shares with the State Government. It recognises the role of Regional Cities
in supporting state growth and prosperity by fostering conditions that will stimulate economies,” he said. Cr Byatt said the next step was for city councils to use the diagnostics tool for assessments and prepare plans that would enable them to prepare for growth and development. “RCV-commissioned research confirms that regional cities have the capacity to accommodate more residents and businesses. RCV is committed to working with governments, industry and our communities to develop long-term solutions to meet Victoria’s growth challenges,” he said.

chances of surviving traumatic events are much better than in the past. However, the cost of treatment can sometimes be beyond your normal means. Without insurance cover, you may need to dip into your children’s education fund or your retirement savings; or you might even have to increase your mortgage to pay for expensive treatment. Importantly, a trauma payment is not dependent on you being unfit to work, unlike income protection, where you need a doctor to certify your ongoing health. Incredibly, thousands of Australians are underinsured or have no insurance in place to cover the expenses incurred by such illnesses. The grief experienced by family for loved ones is often compounded by the costs associated with treatments forcing some to sell the family home to pay for extra time. If you were one of these statistics, what value would you place on having access to the best available treatment to help you in beating a potentially fatal disease? Think about how important it would be to take as much time off work as you needed to recover and not worrying about having enough money to pay the bills. South African heart surgeon Dr Marius Barnard pioneered the idea of trauma insurance when he regularly watched his patients’ families struggling with medical costs. The first policies were offered here in the 1980s. Trauma insurance provides a lump-sum payment in the event that you are diagnosed with, or suffer one of a range of traumatic conditions such as cancer, heart attack and stroke. ountry music artists who won awards in the 2013 Horsham Country Music Festival will appear at Horsham RSL on September 12 and 13.
Horsham Country Music Association spokesman Lyall Wheaton said Annalea Mitchell from Murrabit and Bill Gray, Geelong had been in constant demand since winning awards in the festival’s Walk Up and Busker competitions. “They are both very talented artists and their future in the country music scene is bright,” he said. “Mitchell’s gig guide this year includes the Deniliquin Ute Muster, St Arnaud and Barham country music festivals and Tooleybuc Murray Muster. “Gray’s achievements have been the St Arnaud and Barham festivals and the Swan Reach Country Music Festival in SA. Gray has also appeared at many country music clubs.” Bookings for both shows are now open at the Horsham RSL. The Thursday dinner and show on September 12 costs $30 including a two-course meal. A Friday Morning Melodies performances on September 13 starts at 9.30am and costs $12, which includes morning tea. Patrons can call the RSL on 53825912. ne of Australia’s greatest tribute bands will recreate the Beatles phenomenon at what is expected to be the biggest cabaret in Warracknabeal’s history.
Melbourne band Rubber Soul is known throughout Australia and overseas for its amazing ability to reproduce the authentic Beatles sound while performing live. The group will perform at a ‘Warracknabeatles’ cabaret in Warracknabeal Town Hall on November 1 in support of Rural Northwest Health and Woodbine. Woodbine chief executive Bernie O’Connor said he booked the band for the event after seeing them perform in Melbourne. “I had to get up real close and check that they were playing their instruments because the sound was so precise, it could easily have been a record playing,” Mr O’Connor said. “I was just amazed by how good they were. It’s a totally authentic Beatles experience,” he said. “They are not just a cover band playing Beatles songs. It is the Beatles’ music sung and played like the Beatles played it, 100 percent accurately and full of energy. “I would guarantee the Wimmera hasn’t seen a band like this before and if you ever want to experience exactly what it would have been like to see the Beatles live, this is the greatest opportunity you will ever have. “And by attending the show you will be supporting two of the most important community organisations in the region in Woodbine and Rural Northwest Health.” Band members formed Rubber Soul after audiences of their previous band

constantly told them how much they sounded like the Beatles. They painstakingly reproduced each arrangement so that every note and harmony is faithful to the original.
Instruments They even use the original Beatles instruments including Rickenbacker and Epiphone guitars, Hofner bass and Vox amplifiers. The hard work and preciseness has paid off because Rubber Soul has now
toured nationally and internationally and even performed on popular ABCTV program Spicks and Specks. Woodbine and Rural Northwest Health staff members have formed a committee to organise the ‘Warracknabeatles’ cabaret. Money raised from the evening will go towards an exercise garden for RNH redevelopment and an interactive white board for Woodbine’s new accommodation block in Noall Street. Tickets are also available at CraftWorks in Scott Street, Warracknabeal, phone 5398 1999. Mr O’Connor said he expected tickets to sell quickly because of the limited availability of seats and the unique opportunity on offer. “I can promise you that the region will be talking about this for months afterwards,” he said.
Organisers of Birchip Cropping Group’s first Sheep Management Showcase have hailed the event a resounding success with more than 200 people filing through the gates of a Morton Plains paddock last week. The event attracting graziers and mixed-industry farmers from the Wimmera, Mallee and beyond who made the most to hear from sheepindustry experts. The day featured five guest speakers who covered a diverse range of topics including the impact of a sheep enterprise on farm business profit and risk; scanning, weighing and using electronic ear tags to improve production; producer and sheep-friendly shed and yard design; understanding nutrition and overcoming setbacks; and lamb survival and genetic impacts on production. The showcase also featured demonstrations of some of the latest sheep products and measuring and handling equipment as well as a range of static exhibits. Explaining the optimistic atmosphere BCG livestock coordinator Dannielle McMillan said projections for Australian sheep industry looked positive. “We learned that even one small change can make a huge difference,” she said. People seeking information about BCG livestock events and research or to find out how to become a BCG livestock member can call 5492 2787 or email dannielle@bcg. org.au.

The pair was among 12 students, also representing Ararat, Marian and Stawell secondary colleges, who gave presentations on a wide range of topics at Ararat’s Astor Cinema. The awards, for students 12 to 14, required participants to present five-minute speeches on any topic relating to the ideals of voluntary service, social justice, caring, personnel effort, sacrifice and/or mateship. Organisers presented all students with certificates and Bianca $100 towards travel and participation at the next stage of the awards and Dana with

Harrow-Balmoral
Roos hit straps after slow start
W
hat looked like a Horsham District League season from hell quickly turned around in the later half of the season for Harrow-Balmoral.
It took an upset win against Swifts propelled the Roos into finals action. It seemed like the HarrowBalmoral playing group took a while to embrace first-year coach Brent Forsyth’s game plan but it gained confidence against Kalkee and now looms as a chance in the elimination final. The Roos still look to the like of ruckman Josh Vickery his brother David, elder statesmen Brent Penny and first-year recruit Tim Cogger to provide stability and on-field leadership. The backline let by Ryan McClure, Chris Heath and Murray Staude look short on height and might be well and truly tested by a dry ball and quick forward thrusts from opposition sides. A lot will depend on the
Players to watch Brent Forsyth Tim Cogger David Vickery Michael Phelan
Roos’ midfield of Aaron McDonald, Peter Staude and Forsyth to put pressure on the ball carriers and stop quick transitions. Harrow-Balmoral plays a high-possession game. The players are willing to hold onto the ball and chip short sideways or backwards until an opening presents itself. It’s a
high-risk strategy and if the ball is turned over they may pay a high penalty. The Roos will be confident in the knowledge that they bought down the Baggies a few weeks ago and will feel secure knowing that they have the game plan to go it again come the elimination final. – Grant Kuchel
COMMANDING: Veteran Kangaroo Brent Penny still commands the opposition’s best defenders.

Stawell Swifts
Big assignment for the Baggies
S
wifts again have to do it the hard way in Horsham District League finals.
No one is ever sure what Baggies side will turn up to play but all sides remain wary. They boast plenty of pace with Sean Mantell, Scott Carey, Ash Cowen and Zach Salmi all capable of showing opponents a clean pair of heels. If big Ben Martin can get first hands to the ball then their fleet of runners can do a lot of damage. All year the Baggies have gone without a key forward. Their spread of goal kickers has been sensational and each week we see many names featuring on the scoreboard. However it must be a worry that not many finals are won without a dominant key forward. Jeremy Joiner has struggled with injury and opposition defenders run off him at every change, so the Baggies might be loath to play him. Swifts have six players who
Players to watch Ricky Whitehead
Lachlan Hamilton Ben Martin Paul Hanns
have kicked more than 20 goals this season but to back the argument up the leading goal kicker is coach and small crumber Paul Hanns with 25. Justin Thomas, Liam Scott and Jaimie Britten lead a solid nononsense defensive unit that gives little away. Veteran Britten the veteran has plenty of experience and the younger defenders look to
him for leadership. We haven’t seen the best of reigning Dellar Medallist Ricky Whitehead this season but sides will be aware he can turn it on at the drop of a hat. Swifts were pummelled early in the season but come finals will have confidence in their ability to do damage after making preliminary finals in past seasons. – Grant Kuchel
DANGER MAN: Ricky Whitehead is dangerous and a proven match-winner for Stawell Swifts.

Edenhope-Apsley
Saints building in confidence
E
denhope-Apsley has had a rocky run in Horsham District League this season.
Decimated by injuries during the season the Saints’ depth has been tested with only four players having played every game. But the team has come out the other end with flying colours. Led by joint coach James Dixon the Saints have been building towards the finals and gaining plenty of confidence for their first final against Laharum. The reliance on Dixon is a worry and plenty of sides put a lot of time into negating the flamboyant forward. But in recent times Matt Cranage, Taylor Mulraney and Cam Domanschenz are taking some pressure off Dixon. On the ball the Saints are strong and hard. Matt Tober is an honest worker in the ruck but at ground level Brent Christie, Dave McLeish and Charlie Stewart provide the polish. The trio works extremely hard and are rarely beaten.
Players to watch James Dixon Chris Oliver Oscar McDonald David McLeish
Premierships are often won on defence and the Saints are probably the equal of any in the league. The unheralded and underrated Chris Oliver is the general – he can play on the big key forwards or play a sweeping role across half back. Youngster Oscar McDonald is a class player in the making and if
fit will hold down centre half back while the Kealy brothers Bernard and Jeremy go about their business without fanfare. Edenhope-Apsley enters the finals in significant fitter shape than last year and would once again have sights set on playing off on the last game in September. – Grant Kuchel
ONE OF THE BEST: David McLeish has rarely been out of the Saints’ best this season.

Laharum
Laharum’s bid for atonement
L
aharum will go into Horsham District League finals action looking to atone for its straight-sets exit last season.
Laharum is a tall outfit and will relish dry grounds in the finals. The Demons have also realised they need to complement these talls with speed hence the recruitment of Jarred Combe, Tom Inverarity and James Wray. Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla hold the key up forward. The two have notched close to 170 goals between them and work well together. Przibilla might play closer to goal and Argall push up across half forward. Defensively the Demons are led by a group of youngsters under the tutelage of a couple of wise heads. Hamish Roberts and Gerard Matthews provide the experience to the likes of Keegan Mason, Kane Parish and Brett Ervin. Ervin and Mason will more than likely hold down the key defensive posts
Players to watch Shannon Argall Robbie Miller Zac Price Ben Peucker Hamish Roberts and both back their ability and are willing to run off opponents to create overlap In the middle of the ground tough-as-nails in-and-under Robbie Miller leads the on-ball division and with support from Daniel Easson, and Zac Price the Demons win a lot of the stoppages and get the ball out quickly to outside runners. A possibly worry for the Demons is in the ruck. Ben Peuck-
er is solid in the air but not the slickest across the turf while Marcus Demaria is a pinch hitter if required. Mason might get a chance but the Demons would loath to throw their best ruckman in Argall onto the ball as they lose firepower up forward The loss of Ben Mahon will hurt the side as he provided a lot of the heavy work around the contest. – Grant Kuchel

Kalkee
Kalkee aiming for six straight
K
alkee rightly enters Horsham District Football League finals series as favourite to make it a league record six premierships in a row.
After a hiccup in the opening round the Kees have stamped their authority in the 17 following home-and-away games and finished three games and more than 120 percent clear of their nearest rival. Kalkee boasts possibly three of the best six players in the league. Steve Schultz possibly still holds the mantle as the best footballer in the Wimmera, Josh Mibus is a class act across half back and Tim Wade provides toughness around the contest. Up forward Kalkee boasts a tall arsenal led by Josh Beddison, veteran Adam Carter and the hard-working Grant Schultz while the smalls of Aaron Barnett, Sam Jasper and Brendan McDonald mop up at ground level. If Kalkee has a weakness it
Players to watch Steve Schultz Josh Mibus Tim Wade Josh Webster Oliver Young might be the last line of defence. The Kees don’t have a lot of height or speed and will rely on Ben Hobbs to match the key forwards in the air and Zavier and Brendan Hobbs at ground level. The ace for the Kees is their half backline of Ben Lawson, Josh Webster and Josh Mibus; the trio will provide plenty of
headaches for opposition sides and can quickly turn defence into offence. Jake Hobbs leads the on-ball division in the air with help from Wade and the small runners in Simon Hobbs, Paul Christian and Schultz the Kees have a potent on ball combination capable of matching the best. – Grant Kuchel
STRONG: Kalkee defender Josh Mibus often leaves his opponent to turn the opposition’s attack.

Rich form continues H
orsham District Riverside trainer Greg Baker’s red-hot month continued late last week at the Geelong meeting held on the synthetic track.
The in-form Horsham stable had laststart winner Stratric engaged in a restricted 1900-metre event shooting for two wins on the trot. Melbourne jockey Dean Holland was reunited with the five-year-old but Sleepy Hollow punters didn’t consider the pair a winning chance showing odds of 20-1 in the bookies’ ring. When the starter released the 12 endurance steeds, Holland took ‘hold’ of his mount, opting to settle back in the field and ride for luck. Approaching the 600-metre marker the tempo of the race lifted with Stratric steadily making ground and looming as a win-
ning chance before turning for home. In a masterful display of Horsemanship Holland was able to duck and weave his way around rivals in the home straight, getting every last inch from the daughter of Stratum to score by a neck on the winning post. Stratric’s recent rich vein of form can be attributed to her hard-working track riders Cherie Tomlins, Shanelle Pekin and Violet O’Donnell who do a lot of behind-thescenes work at Riverside Racing. Well done to all involved.
Yendall getting busy
The new racing season has only just begun but Horsham’s leading jockey Dean Yendall is already starting to make an early impression Late last week like the Baker stable, Yendall tasted success at the Geelong meeting. Nagambie trainer Pat Cannon booked Dean to ride his horse Spirit Of Carbine in the opening 1100-metre event. The Chestnut mare was the rank outsider of the 10-horse field because of strong representation from rival Melbourne trainers. In a daring display of riding tactics Yendall drove Sprit Of Carbine to the lead
after leaving the barrier stalls. The Horsham hoop ensured there was good speed throughout the scamper and in doing so took the more fancied runners out of their comfort zone. Rounding the home turn the daughter of Coolmore Stud’s champion stallion Danehill Dancer had all her rivals ‘off the bit’ and looking for oxygen masks. Spirit Of Carbine responded well to Yendall’s urging, putting her rivals to the sword in the straight and scoring at the post by three lengths. With this win under her belt Spirit Of Carbine could have a reasonable future.
In brief
Horsham’s Holly McKechnie tasted success at Strathalbyn in SA aboard Work Before Play for Mount Gambier trainer Lee Creek. Dean Yendall also booted home West Of Jordan at Ballarat recently for Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent. Donald’s upcoming meeting this Saturday is shaping to be strong with 355 nominations for the seven-race program. Anyone seeking further information regarding Saturday’s race meeting can email Donald@ countryracing.com.au
Run of seconds comes to end
Meggy Boan ended a sequence of second placings when she led yet another all-girl charge to win an eight-kilometre Stawell handicap cross-country race. Warned in advance that the Stawell Amateur Athletic Club event would be far from easy, Boan steeled herself and attacked the hills with relish. “Hills have always been an enemy to me. I once found them daunting, but now I turn them into a challenge and I have beaten the enemy,” she said. After four seconds from her previous five starts, Boan was due.
In wet and blustery conditions Boan recorded a personal best of 34.44 minutes. Boan always had the race under her control, reeling in the front-markers and holding a 25-second margin at the finish over last-start winner Matilda Iglesias. Rhonda Clark who cracked 40 minutes for the first time in more than five years, was third and fourth was Sandra Casey, completing the all-girl quartet. In sub-juniors, Atalia Chaplin made it a whitewash for the girls when she came from behind to defeat Alex Boan.
The club has a bye this weekend but travels to Horsham on August 31 for a five-kilometre Andrew Darnell Memorial river run starting from Horsham Rowing Sheds at 2pm. On Sunday, Ararat shearer Ian McCready broke through for an overdue win in the 6.5-kilometre Watkins Family Handicap. After overpowering Brad Makovec and Sue Blizzard to win his first club race since June last year, McCready announced he would join the undaunted Blizzard on a journey to the torturous Phillip Island Tough Mudder event in mid-September.
In preparation, McCready has lifted his running work rate to 45 kilometres and intensified his Tae Kwon Do workouts. He expects after his ordeal at Phillip Island, he might be able to make it to Moyston on September 15 to end the cross country season with a five-kilometre dash in a President’s Handicap race. The club’s five-kilometre Australia Post Handicap, at Dunneworthy Common, north-east of Ararat this Sunday, seems like a walk in the park. Fun runners can contact the club on 5356 2493.
Racing from Broken Hill Grounds for finals Horsham Homing Club flyers will race their birds in a Breeders’ Plate event from Broken Hill and in a Sunday race from Moulamein this weekend. Graham Elbourne won a 420-kilometre race from Coombah, his entry flying at 1655 metres a minute and home before 273 other birds entered by 16 flyers.
With a strong northerly wind birds were flying at 100kph. Lee Arnott was second, John Muszkieta third and Rob Nelson fourth. On Sunday, Ern Blandthorn won a 190-kilometre race involving 15 flyers and 354 birds from Swan Hill. Elbourne was second, Barry James third and Bernie Pulton third.
Wimmera Football League’s qualifying final on Saturday week will be at Murtoa. Officials have also confirmed the elimination final, on Sunday week, will be at Horsham City Oval. A September 7 second
semi-final will be at Nhill and a September 8 first semi-final at Dimboola. A preliminary final on September 15 will be in Ararat but the league has yet to announce a grand final venue.

SPORT report
Classic opening to finals series H
By GRANT KUCHEL
orsham District Football League finals action starts on the windswept plains of Kalkee on Saturday when second-placed Laharum faces off against third-placed Edenhope-Apsley to see who gets to face Kalkee next week.
Both sides finished with 14 wins and similar percentage so fans should be in for an entertaining contest. Matt Close and Jeremy Kealy will hold the keys to EdenhopeApsley’s success. The defenders will have the responsibility of shutting down Laharum key forwards Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla. Argall and Przibilla have contributed 170 goals this season, nearly half of Laharum’s score so if the Saints can limit their output then victory awaits. At the other end of the ground Edenhope-Apsley has found an unlikely forward in Cam Domaschenz. In recent weeks he has been able to contribute regularly and along with Matt Cranage and James Dixon will give the Demons’ backline some worries. Hamish Roberts might go to Dixon while Brett Ervin and Kane Parish should side up next to the other two forwards.
Dry ball
KEY TALL: Laharum’s Shannon Argal, pictured in action for Horsham District League this year, looms as a critical player this weekend. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES
Laharum will be hoping for a dry ground and ball. The Demons boast plenty of talls and will want Ben Peucker and Marcus Demaria to give first use of the ball to their small fleet of runners. Saints Carl Obst and Matt Tober face the huge task of nullifying them and if they get on
top the Demons have a handy back-up pair and can swing either Argall or Bennett into the contest. The word ‘intriguing’ best describes the midfield clash. Both sides boast some tough, hard players. Brent Christie, Xavier Close and Dave McLeish lead the Saints’ charge while Laharum’s Robbie Miller, Zac Price and Sam Winfield will lead the counter attack. The winner around the stoppages will give their side a huge advantage and propel them towards a second semi-final. It should be a classic finals encounter and one worth the trek out Blue Ribbon Road. Both sides have plenty to prove but it might be the Demons who are just in a fraction better form and get over the line.
Elimination final
Sunday’s sees elimination final specialists Swifts make the long haul from one end of the league to the other to face Harrow-Balmoral at Edenhope. The Baggies will go in as raging hot favourites but the Roos cemented their place in the finals by defeating the Stawell side a few weeks ago. Harrow Balmoral would love a heavy track while the Baggies will be looking for the opposite so they can run the Roos off their feet. Scott Carey leads the fleetfooted and skilled Baggies’ running unit and along with Paul Hanns, Sean Mantell and Owen Phillips has the capability of running opposition sides ragged. Harrow-Balmoral loves to hold the ball and play a possession game. Brent Forsyth con-
trols the middle of the ground and gives the Roos their direction and along with David Vickery, Chris Heath and Ryan McClure provide leadership for their young team-mates. There will be many eyes on Swifts recruit Tom Ruggles. Many supporters haven’t seen the skilful player in action and he looms as an x-factor in the Baggies’ campaign. Both sides lack of a key forward. Brent Penny and Jeremy Joiner have been unable to get on the ground for their respective sides, which has meant the Roos have had to rely on Tim Cogger to be the main target while the Baggies have been successful in sharing the goal-kicking duties their small forwards. Ricky Whitehead is one player capable of quickly turning a game on its head. We are yet to see the best of the reigning Dellar Medallist this season and a backline led by Murray Staude and Nathan Neumann will put plenty of attention into limiting his space.
Hardened
Harrow-Balmoral might be finals hardenedBefore last week the Roos were playing elimination finals every week just to stay alive and it will be interesting to see if this works for or against them on Sunday. Swifts have been able to cruise knowing they would finish fourth and make sure they are ready to fire in another finals campaign. The Baggies will be prepared for the Roos this time and ensure they go at least one week deeper into the finals by using their slick ball use and run through the corridor.
Mininera finals beckon as results sort top five A
By JONATHAN BOX
fter an exciting last round in Mininera District Football League the final five has finally been decided. Wickliffe Lake-Bolac finished its season as strongly as it started, losing only one game for the home-and-away rounds to find itself on top of the ladder and earning a week off. On Saturday in a qualifying final Moyston-Willaura will play Glenthompson-Dunkeld at Tatyoon. Both sides have had up and down seasons scoring major wins as well as having shock losses. But both deserve to be playing in the finals. Last week Moyston-Willaura finished
the season strongly in the wet with a convincing 10-goal win over SMW Rovers to squash any glimmer of hope Rovers had of getting into finals. Pumas forward John Vanderwaal showed his finesse in retaining his silky skills in the wet to kick four goals and to be one of Moyston-Willaura’s best players. Jamie Elder and Joshua Price also shone for the Pumas. Coach Daniel Guinane will be looking to all his players to fight hard and do their job against an ever-strengthening Glenthompson-Dunkeld team to try and take his team to its first premiership as a combine. Last week Glenthompson-Dunkeld had an easy win, smashing Woorndoo-
Mortlake by 24 goals. While there was seemingly not much of a fight put up by the Tigers, Rams Matthew Augustinus, Nathan Curtis and Christopher McLeod all had a day out in front of goals, kicking 18 between them. Aaron Trotter was best for the Rams and with his skill and strength around the ball will play a pivotal roll in this week’s game.
Elimination final
In the other game this weekend Tatyoon takes on Hawkesdale-Macarthur in an elimination final at Great Western on Sunday. Tatyoon, which had a terrible start to the season, has since gone from strength to strength and finished off its
season with a 27-goal win over Ararat. Aidan Bell, who again won the league goal-kicking, showed why he deserved this honour by kicking 14 goals in a best-on-ground performance. Andrew Maconachie and Mitchell Cronin were in the best for the Hawks and while they have made the path to the grand final difficult, few in the league would have written them off. Hawkesdale-Macarthur, which sneaked into the finals after hard work and good fortune over the last few weeks, will be pulling out all the stops to win. Last week Hawkesdale-Macarthur sealed its spot in the finals with a ninegoal win.
The Eagles were one of three teams that could have taken this spot but over the last few weeks proved too strong to hold the other teams out. Lachlan Glare and Murray Habel were best for the Eagles and with Xavier McCartney and Danny Chatfield constantly creating problems for the leagues backmen they will have no doubts they can have a successful finals series. Although the smart money would be on Wickliffe-Lake Bolac for the flag, on their day any one of the five teams could snatch victory. It will be a very exciting finals series and I wish all teams competing the best of luck.

One last crack to shape finals S
By DEAN LAWSON
tawell and Nhill will step to the front of a Wimmera Football League queue this weekend as they attempt one last crack at influencing the finals.
DETERMINED: Spray flies as John Delahunty tackles Horsham’s Darcy Taylor in the wet last week. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES
Neither the Warriors nor Tigers will be playing next week. Their season wasn’t good enough. But if either or both manage to score upset wins on Saturday they would leave a serious mark on 2013. Warrack Eagles have done what many expected and leapfrogged Horsham Saints and Minyip-Murtoa into the coveted third place. They now only have to hang on for one last minor round to secure the finals double chance. The Eagles almost tumbled at the line last week when they scrambled home to beat Ararat by less than a goal and now meet Stawell at Stawell. Stawell, sitting eighth, would have renewed its confidence with a solid win over Horsham RSL Diggers. After seeing the Eagles’ result in Ararat last week, knowing it too has a home-ground advantage this week, and with nothing to lose, will back itself for an upset. It all presents a fascinating final-round equation for finalists. If the boilover happens, Warrack Eagles will remain stagnant on 46 points, leaving the door open for fifth-placed
Minyip-Murtoa or fourthplaced Horsham Saints, both on 44 points, to retrieve third place. The Saints are guaranteed four points and lead Minyip-Murtoa by percentage but Minyip-Murtoa is a red-hot fancy to beat Nhill. But don’t put down your glasses! Enigmatic Nhill is set to finish the home-and-away season as the best side outside the top five and on its day, similar to Ararat, is probably capable of creating last-minute carnage. The Tigers won’t mind travelling to the expanses of the Minyip reserve where its nimble runners, which include some of the quickest in the league, will have space to move.
Finish the season
Nhill has done quite well this season considering it has had a list loaded with relatively inexperienced players. The Tigers had a chance to rest up its wounded with a bye last week after copping a late-season wake-up call from Ararat the week before. There are plenty of good players in the Tigers camp who will be keen to finish the season off on a profound note. Simon Brearley provides great on-field leadership and Wil Oakley has been good all year. Then there’s the likes of Ryan Fischer, Liam Albrecht, Zac Webb and Grant McLeod who
all managed to sneak into the best-player list last outing. But if Minyip-Murtoa is going to push deeply into the finals it must simply shrug the Tigers off. The Burras, also boasting plenty of youngsters, are a tough group and stayed with Horsham for most of its game last week. It’s no surprise that Zac Cross is enjoying the heavy footy at the moment and the form of Clint Midgely and Declan Foott is promising. Down at Central Park Stawell will hope its best players from last week, including consistent Tom Eckel and Cam Kimber and others such as Todd Matthews, Jamie Bach and Andrew Cameron can lead efforts to produce another win. Peter Weir, Ben Spicer and particularly coach Tim Inkster for the Eagles will have other ideas. In other games, Dimboola will shore up the minor premiership by beating Ararat although the Rats might also stir the pot of intrigue for a while. Horsham will flex its muscles against Horsham RSL Diggers and might use the contest to experiment before the finals.

Tigers short-odds favourite for premiership M
By MICK SHANNON
allee Football League premiership favoritism has moved into the Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers camp after the Tigers easily accounted for Beulah by 66 points
Tigers full forward Cliff Ryan starred with eight goals, leaving him two short of the century. In other games Damian Cupido notched up his century with a 10-goal haul for Ouyen United as the Demons took care of Jeparit-Rainbow by 68 points while Woomelang-Lascelles produced a great game to defeat Walpeup-Underbool by seven points. This week will see the first round of finals with Woomelang-Lascelles and
Walpeup-Underbool doing battle at Beulah in a first semi-final. This game is set to be one of the games of the year as both teams look to push forward into the preliminary final. Woomelang-Lascelles leads the head-to-head match-ups over Walpeup-Underbool this year, winning two out of three games including last week’s match. This will give the Cats enormous confidence but the Roos are a dangerous team and will be looking to make it to a second premiership showdown in as many years. Through the midfield the Cats will look to 2013 Russ Gravestocks medallist Trent Donnan to win majority of

the centre clearances with help from the silky Corey Kelly and Chris McMahon who have been playing fantastic footy over the last six weeks. Walpeup-Underbool has its own stars though and David Piasente will be out to show why he is one of the best players in the league with a strong performance, also through the middle. Luke Nathan will provide class by foot while Simon Brown and Luke Coates will look to provide the Roos with speed around the contests. In the ruck is where the Roos have a great advantage with man-mountain Josh Charles controlling every ball-up and throw-in across the ground. High-leaping Mathew Palmer will
provide great backup ruckwork to help the Roos over the line.
Options
Woomelang-Lascelles has several goal-kicking options and always produces a good spread of goal kickers. Jayden and Aaron Lonergan have produced good hauls this season while Jeremy Phelan is potent in front of the big sticks. Walpeup-Underbool was without Wade Champion last round, and it will be interesting to see if he is available for this match. If Champion is playing then the Cats will struggle to stop the power forward and Walpeup-Underbool could snatch victory.
Be part of Breuers
The two sides like to run the ball and will use their skill by foot to hit up shorter targets around the ground in an attempt to open up the game. All year these two sides have been on an even playing field with the biggest margin in their three games being only 16 points. A good crowd will be drawn to Beulah for this match in what is sure to be a high-class affair. Woomelang-Lascelles plays the Beulah oval well and will use its confidence from last game to overcome the Roos by 10 points. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers and Beulah will play off in a second semi-final at Underbool next week.

Official: Ford to sell Mustang in Australia F
ord Australia has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated next-generation Mustang pony car due for international release next year will come to Australia. Although it remains under wraps ahead of an expected world debut at the New York motor show in April next year, the new Mustang was long ago confirmed as a global program that will include right-hand-drive markets. The announcement of its Australian berth was made in Sydney today by Ford Motor Company’s executive vice-president of global marketing,
sales and service, Jim Farley, who joined other Detroit top brass – including CEO Alan Mulally – at an event outlining the company’s model plans as it prepares to shut down its manufacturing operations here in 2016, putting around 1200 employees out of work and retiring the Falcon nameplate in the process.
Falcon and offshoots from Ford Performance Vehicles – the performance arm which could be shut down as early as next year.
No launch date for the Mustang has been set, but expect an arrival either late in 2015 or early 2016, just months before Ford’s Australian factories close.
Various reports suggest Ford Australia will bolster the upgraded 2014 Falcon – the latest teaser images of which were shown at today’s ‘Go Further’ event – with a return of V8powered models – including XR8 and GT – to the mainstream range, killing off FPV well before 2016 after having brought it in-house with a buyout of former partner Prodrive last year.
The Mustang announcement goes some way to appeasing Aussie fast-car enthusiasts of the Blue Oval brand, who will be dreading the demise of

Key role
Dark horse: Jim Farley confirmed in Sydney last week that the Mustang pony car is coming to Australia
has previously reported, Australian designers and engineers have played a key role in the pony car’s development, which is being run out of the US. “The car has a unique connection with customers,” Mr Farley said. “It speaks to who we are – allowing you to enjoy the freedom of the journey like never before. “Ford’s global product program, ‘One Ford’ is opening the door for Australians and consumers around the world to our best-ever portfolio of vehicles and giving them new reasons to look again at Ford. The Ford Mustang is one of these vehicles.” Ford’s recently appointed Asia Pacific and Africa design director Joel Piaskowski, who heads the Australian-based regional design studio, was previously exterior design director for The Americas and led the design program for the new Mustang.
His predecessor, Chris Svensson, who has effectively swapped roles with Mr Piaskowski and is now back in Detroit, told GoAuto at the Sydney motor show last October – when Ford Australia provided the first fleeting glimpse of the forthcoming ‘FH’ Falcon – that each of the company’s six design studios outside the US continued to have a hand in the next Mustang.
one of those programs that we’re so excited about, and we all want to ensure that it is successful. “It’s going to deliver a stunning, stunning car, and I think you’ll see influences in that car from all of our studios. “Even though it’s based out of North America, and that’s where the design was executed, I think you’ll see when it’s revealed the influences of many of the other studios throughout the globe. “The car was done specifically to build on the heritage of Mustang, and I’m sure that the Australian customers are going to absolutely adore it.” Ford Australia’s E8 (Falcon/Territory RWD platform) vehicle line director Dave Wilkinson also told GoAuto at the Sydney show that “there’s a huge amount of functional alignment” between engineers in Australia and the US. “Chassis engineers here are in constant contact with the chassis engineers in America and in Europe and around the world,” he said. “Our expertise (in rear-wheel-drive vehicles) is embedded in the Ford DNA, in the Ford targets around the world. “It’s very much an interconnected, functionally aligned Ford now – very different to what it was 15 years ago.” Terry Martin © GoAutoMedia, 2013
“All the studios have been involved in this car,” said Mr Svensson. “It’s

Holden’s Trax baby soft-roader weighs in $5000 cheaper than the bigger-engined, strong selling Impreza-based Subaru XV, and $1500 cheaper than Nissan’s Dualis ST.
Fuel economy is a comparatively low 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres, but only when matched to the behind-thegame five-speed manual gearbox fitted to the entry-level petrol model. Subaru’s six-speed automatic XV beats the six-speed auto Trax’s 7.6L/100km fuel use by 0.1L/100km. Holden will push the Trax’s valuefor-money packaging to attract buyers into the car. Leading the charge: Holden’s Barina-based Trax is a cheap small SUV starting from $23,490 plus on-roads.
H
olden has launched its pitch at one of the fastest-growing market segments in Australia, launching the Barina-based Trax soft-roader with a richer equipment list than its cityfocussed sibling. The addition of the Korean-made Trax – priced from $23,490 before onroad costs – lifts Holden’s SUV count to four models, including the Captiva 5 and Captiva 7, and the utilitarian Colorado 7. It also arrives ahead of a pack of would-be rivals in the burgeoning subcompact crossover market, including the imminent Nissan Juke and Ford EcoSport both due by year’s end, and
Euros such as the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 due next year.
Value The entry-level Trax will cost $2500 more than the most expensive Barina hatchback in the Holden line-up, although it will come with a bigger 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine borrowed from the Cruze driving the front wheels rather than its city-based sibling’s 1.6-litre unit.
“Trax offers a great package at an exceptional price point and we believe it will pose an immediate challenge to established models when it arrives in Holden dealerships in September,” Holden executive director of sales and marketing Phil Brook said. “None of the best-selling vehicles in this segment currently offer the same features for this price,” he said.
It produces 103kW at a high 6300rpm and a maximum of 175Nm of torque at 3800rpm – down 1kW and 1Nm on the Cruze’s outputs.
The Trax will sell across three variants starting with the $23,490 LS. It will include features such as a reversing camera – important given the limited rearward vision in higher-riding soft-roaders – and rear parking sensors, as well as the MyLink multimedia system that can stream music from the internet via a smartphone connection.
Significantly, though, the Trax is
The Trax also becomes a mobile
power station, fitting a 240-volt inverter to the rear of the centre console to allow owners to recharge laptops – or even use a hairdryer – on the run. It is the only vehicle other than Toyota’s LandCruiser Prado off-roader to do so. As well as the plumped up looks, the entry-level Trax comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels and daytime running lights.
Interior Inside, there is single-zone air-conditioning, a seven-inch colour touchscreen to run the multimedia system, an audio system that includes a Bluetooth phone connection and USB connectivity, dusk-sensing halogen headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, an analogue tachometer beside a digital speedo, and a black cloth interior. Opting for the six-speed automatic over the six-speed manual adds $2200 to the price – $200 more than for the Barina. The range-topping LTZ is priced from $27,990 and includes the automatic transmission as standard, big 18-inch alloy wheels, a different cloth trim along with heated front seats, front fog lamps, a trip computer and a pull-out storage tray under the front passenger seat.
carpet mats, mud flaps, a cargo tray and a cargo net for $510. A sports pack for the LTZ costs $1590 and adds different 18-inch wheel rims, and a black, silver or ornage “track stripes” package. Metallic paint adds an extra $550, while a towbar kit that takes advantage of the Trax’s 1200kg braked towing capacity adds $830. The off-road pretentions including the bigger engine add more than 100kg in weight to the Trax over its Barina sibling, giving a kerb weight of 1356kg for the manual version jumping up to 1371kg for the automatic versions. As well as the reversing camera, safety runs to six airbags, a hill descent function that automatically brakes the Trax to maintain grip, and a hill hold function to stop it running backwards on a slope. The Trax was last week awarded a top five-star crash rating in the latest round of Australasian New Car Assessment Program testing. The car also comes with a pair of Isofix child seat fittings on the rear outboard seats in anticipation of the child-seat restraint system being introduced to Australia.
The simple line-up is backed with a comprehensive accessories list running to an essentials pack that includes

Nismo is go for Oz N
issan Australia chief executive Bill Peffer has confirmed that tuned and toned Nismo road cars will be available in Australia eventually – but launch day remains some way off yet.
However, this is still a development, with the company previously expressing interest without unequivocally confirming it would add Nismobadged models to its local showrooms. Factory Nismo versions of the Juke and 370Z are already available in Europe. A Nismo Micra has also appeared in Japan, and a brutal GT-R version is odds-on to appear at the Tokyo motor show in November. The Yokohama-based Nissan subsidiary also inked a development deal with Formula One team Williams Advanced Engineering last month, with the fruit of their combined labour to roll off production lines from 2014. But rather than following suit in Australia immediately, Nissan plans to hold Nismo models in reserve for a period of time until its range needs a booster shot. At the moment, the company sees the prospect of rolling out its halo brand here as an unwelcome distraction from a cavalcade of new volume models it is in the midst of launching. Five new volume Nissans will arrive here by July 2014 – the regular Juke, Pathfinder, Altima and new-shape X-Trail and Dualis – and the company is keen to liberate itself from any additional distractions. “There’s a place for Nismo,” Mr Peffer told GoAuto last week. “Yes, there’s a day when Nismo makes it to Australia, I’m not willing or able to tell you when.” “The reason is this cadence of product coming out. The biggest challenge is giving each of these complex new models airspace before we bring the next one in. For instance, in the case of Juke, we’ll already have two trims, engines and transmissions.
“I see Nismo in Australia as a midlife-cycle event that can be used to re-inject some spice into the brand. Yes it’s in the plan, yes we’ll bring it in, but I can’t tell you yet when or what specific models.” Mr Peffer said the halo effect of Nismo models – the industry theory goes that a highend or sporty version of a car also boosts sales of lower-grade versions – would be valuable, but not something entirely new to the brand either. “Yes, those act as halos to your brand, a distinguishable identity to your brand. But then, we already have some of that in our regular Z, with GT-R, even with a technological leader like Leaf EV.
Not only that, the company also plans to push sales of its BT-50 ute closer to the light commercial segment’s biggest players by asking for a bigger chunk of global production, and going after more fleet sales. Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders told GoAuto this week that CX-5 sales could feasibly go even higher than they already are. It is global supply that restricts volumes rather than demand, and Mazda is continually looking at ways it can shuffle around production in Japan to pump out more of the SUVs. “Every car we get is coming in and going straight out, we have no stock,” said Mr Benders, adding that Japanese production had increased from 150,000 to 200,000 units, and could climb higher still. Many of these extra cars are going to Europe to satisfy back-orders - Mazda Japan initially sent most CX-5s to profitable centres such as Australia rather than its struggling European arms - but Australia can also expect some of them. Mazda has sold 11,731 CX-5 this year for 18 per cent segment share. The smaller Hyundai ix35 is the only other SUV to crack 10,000 sales to the end of July. Another key area of growth earmarked for Australia’s top importer is the light commercial market, with Mazda producing a relatively new and well-regarded contender, the BT-50. But in the all-important 4x4 area of the segment, Mazda has sold 5466 BT-50s, putting it a distant fifth in the segment behind the Toyota HiLux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and

“We have some of those products, but Nismo will help, though it isn’t needed right now.” Each Nismo product revealed so far packs more power, sharper handling, unique exterior and interior styling, and aerodynamic improvements, capitalising on Nismo’s extensive motorsport experience. The Juke gets a 147kW/250Nm version of the 1.6-litre turbo from the Pulsar SSS, a body kit that gives 37 per cent more downforce, Eurotuned suspension, more steering resistance and 18-inch Nismo alloy wheels with wide 225-section tyres to improve traction and grip. The 370Z gets a 6.5 per cent power boost from its 3.7-litre V6 – to 261kW – an aero package that gives GT-R levels of downforce, plus uprated springs, dampers and stabiliser bars, a more rigid strut brace, and a limited-slip differential on the rear axle for better in-corner traction.

“If you look at passenger cars, we’re one or two in most segments. With our previous product in the ute segment we’ve been down the rung because we don’t think we had a competitive product, but we now think we’ve got a more-than-competitive product and we’re still fifth there, especially in dual cabs. “Just those two factors say to me there’s more opportunity there, but we’ve basically only had enough supply to meet natural demand; we haven’t gone chasing it. But supply will improve, and we’re certainly negotiating hard with Mazda in Japan to get as much as we can. Mr Benders also intimated a drive towards more fleet sales, made achievable given a more steady stream of supply. Mazda makes a point of selling almost no fleet cars in the passenger market, but you can’t ignore it with LCVs, he said. “The thing with that segment is, there are plenty of people that buy in single units, and we’re getting a fair share of those, but there’s also plenty of opportunity to get into small fleets and so forth, but to do that, to chase that, you need stable supply.

Supply constraints have hurt, with weekslong waiting lists on some versions, especially automatics. “Well if you look at the Ford numbers, they’re substantially above us, so that already indicates we could probably do a little bit better,” said Mr Benders.
