Anzac connection BY DEAN LAWSON
H
orsham community leaders and RSL representatives have urged people to grasp a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of 100th anniversary Anzac Day activities.
Horsham RSL’s David Eltringham said Horsham had the rare honour of presenting one of 12 regional Camp Gallipoli events in Australia and it was of paramount importance that people made the effort to attend and gain something from the experience. “We’re unlikely to have anything like it again in the near future – it’s a one-off. The turnout will reflect the district community’s connection with its own history and how the events at Gallipoli and World War One overall forged the bedrock of the culture we share today,” he said. “I suspect Camp Gallipoli will be one of those occasions that will implant memories for life.” Camp Gallipoli Horsham, part of the largest national Spirit of Anzac commemoration program in the country, is at Sawyer Park from 6.30pm on Friday and is open to everyone, especially Wimmera, Mallee and Grampians communities. National organisers have invited families, schools and community groups to join in a ‘special night of remembrance, entertainment, mateship and the birth of Aussie and Kiwi Anzac spirit’. Presentations, starting at 6.30pm include an outdoor cinema experience featuring Russell Crowe’s war drama The Water Diviner, the arrival of the Anzac Flame and other commemorative activities. Year nine, 10 and 11 students from a variety of regional schools will be special guests and camp out at Horsham City Oval next to Sawyer Park before attending a dawn service the next day.

The level of Wimmera sacrifice at the Australian landing at Gallipoli prompted national Camp Gallipoli organisers to include Horsham in the Centenary of Anzac event.
Significant
The Gallipoli landing claimed the lives of 48 Horsham district soldiers. Mr Eltringham said Camp Gallipoli would precede one of the largest Anzac commemoration services since the end of the First World War. “We expect a lot of local participation. The RSL has been approached by people who wish to be part of the march with photos of relatives who saw action representing Australia,” he said. “There are a lot of local connections in the region between families and local soldiers who died in the Gallipoli campaign or were seriously wounded or affected by the experience. “There will be significant youth involvement with children involved in camp Gallipoli carrying banners and battle honours representing the battalions of the First AIF leading the march.” Mr Eltringham said as part of recognising the important connection between the the region’s First World War effort and the Australian Lighthorse, members of the Horsham Fourth Lighthorse Troop would anchor the parade. “There will also be special effort to recognise each of the 48 individuals from the district who died in the Gallipoli campaign,” he said. People from across the Wimmera, Mallee and Grampians will gather at various Anzac Day services and events on Saturday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and the First World War. • Regional service details are on page 22.
