A MOTHER’S LOVE: Lance Trigg, of Horsham, holds baby alpaca, also called a cria, La Freesia while mum Sonnita snuggles in for a kiss. La Freesia, the third cria born at Nambucca at Riverside in the past fortnight, was born in below minus temperatures. Mr Trigg expects another five or six crias to be born at his property this winter. “Yes, it’s cold, but their ancestors come from the Andes, so they know what cold is about,” he said. Mr Trigg said alpacas were great animals to work with: “They are friendly, you just have to handle them right.” • For more, page 5. Picture: KELLY LAIRD
Air show injection BY SARAH SCULLY
N
hill Air Show organisers have called on the Wimmera to get behind the historical event, which they believe will inject thousands of dollars into the region’s economy.
Organiser Andrew Kube said securing the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes last week would help attract between 4000 and 5000 people to the October 10 event. “We had about 2000 people attend our fly-in in 2012 and we only had one Roulette,” he said. “This year we are going to
have all seven members of the elite formation aerobatic team. It is a real coup.” Nhill Air Show will mark 75 years since the RAAF used the town’s aerodrome as a Second World War training base. Mr Kube said the historical significance of Nhill’s aviation heritage was complemented by a hard-working and innovative committee. “It’s going to be a great weekend for the town,” he said. “Even though the show is based at Nhill, we consider it an event for the whole region. “Even if we get 1000 extra
people, we don’t have room for them all at Nhill, so they will look for accommodation at places such as Dimboola, Jeparit, Horsham and Kaniva. “We are very keen for the whole region to be involved.”
Smart approach
Wimmera Development Association executive director Jo Bourke said the committee had taken a smart approach. “The committee has encouraged service groups to take advantage of the large crowds that will be in the region for the weekend by running additional activities,” she said.

“We have seen what events such as the Grampians Grape Escape at Halls Gap and the Stawell Gift can do for the surrounding region. “The Stawell Gift books out accommodation within 100 kilometres of Stawell each Easter and I think Nhill Air Show is in a position to do the same thing. “It will not only attract plane enthusiasts, but also their families and people who are interested in the wide range of other activities planned for the weekend.” Mr Kube said events would include a community market
featuring regional produce, a vintage car show, an old-time dance, children’s activities, a film screening and dinners. He said the air show itself would be the largest in regional Victoria, with more than 100 aircraft involved. Mr Kube said the show’s flying program would include the Roulettes; RAAF Museum historic aircraft; classic and vintage aircraft; and aerobatic aircraft. Display aircraft will include a P51 Mustang, a T-28 Trojan, CAC Wirraway and Winjeel and DH-82 Tiger Moths and Chipmunks.

“Another highlight of the event will be that people can fly up from Melbourne’s Essendon Airport and back in a Douglas DC3,” he said. “These aircraft flew the Melbourne to Adelaide route, stopping at Nhill, in the 1950s, so it’s an amazing opportunity.” Mr Kube said about six seats were still available. “We’re encouraging groups of friends or businesses to come on board and sponsor a plane,” he said. Mr Kube said people could visit nhillairshow.com.au for more information.
