Mr Plenty won peer recognition as Australia’s best country and provincial news presenter at the 2014 Australian Commercial Radio Awards, or ACRAs, at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The annual ACRAs celebrate the talent driving the Australian commercial radio industry, recognising excellence in all areas of radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. High-profile radio journalist Neil Mitchell presented Mr Plenty with his award. Mr Plenty said he had never worked with a company with a culture like ACE. Mr Plenty has been with 3WM for three years and moved into the news role in January this year where he shares a strong relationship with The Weekly Advertiser. Horsham station general manager Scott Grambau said the ACRA was just reward for Mr Plenty’s application to his role as a regional presenter. “It is not only reward for his role in presenting news, but also for his hard work, dedication and commitment to the community in many forums,” he said.

Footballers in film BY DEAN LAWSON

A

group of Horsham district footballers will step back into the early 1950s later this year as they fulfil support roles in a major international movie. The footballers, most of them from Laharum club, will don uniforms of the era and go through the motions of a mock match on the set of The Dressmaker. Producer Sue Maslin confirmed that filming for the football scene would be at the historic Jung Recreation Reserve, long abandoned as a district sporting ground and now home to a monthly market. “The players will be in full kit and have already been going

through their training sessions with our stunt co-ordinator. And at Jung it’s a case of BYO goal posts,” she said. Production for The Dressmaker, featuring Academy Award winner Kate Winslett and Australian stars Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving, has started in Melbourne under director Jocelyn Moorhouse. The movie is based on a book by Rosalie Ham and involves the mythical rural town of Dungatar. Ms Maslin said a film crew would be in the Wimmera in early December and that several people who had auditioned for ‘extra’ roles in Horsham would be part of production.

“We’ve just started filming with Kate and Judy Davis working in the studio in Docklands. After all the effort, which all leads to the first day of shooting, it is a big relief. It has started to roll and the actors are in great form,” she said. “We auditioned well over 500

people for roles as extras at Jerilderie, the home town of the author, Lara and Melbourne as well Horsham and everyone who has been cast has been contacted in the last week.” “There is quite few from the Horsham auditions who have been cast.”

Ms Maslin said Wimmera scenery and landmarks would appear in the movie. “There will be various shots from across the region and people will be familiar with some of the scenes as well as some of the people in the background,” she said. Production intensity for The Dressmaker has lifted in the last few weeks with cast rehearsals, costume fittings, make-up trials and camera tests. Costume designer Marion Boyce and a dressmaker team have created 25 gowns and and outfits alone for the lead character ‘Tilly’. Ms Maslin revealed that research into finding a town similar to Dungatar had involved many years of searching.

“We needed a town in the shadow of a hill – ‘Molly’s Hill’ – on the edge of a vast wheat plain and travelled across Australia to find it. But in the end we decided to build the main street of Dungatar at Mt Rothwell on the edge of the You Yangs, about an hour out of Melbourne,” she said. “To be finally shooting is very exciting.” Film-makers took the unusual step of visiting regional centres earlier this year in an effort to get an accurate representation of rural people for background scenes. A call for ‘extras’ while in Horsham attracted an overwhelming response, prompting film-makers to plan extra casting days in the region.
