Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Exhibitor response ref lects confidence
M
ajor agricultural firms have confirmed their long-term confidence in the region and Wimmera Machinery Field Days by again turning up in strength for the annual event.
Field days manager Murray Wilson said all major brand machinery dealers, regardless of poor back-to-back growing seasons across the Wimmera and Mallee, were booked in ready to showcase their products. “It just shows the strength of this event when it comes to agricultural importance,” he said. “The field days are an important Australian showcase for broadacre dry land agriculture and we live in an important agricultural part of the country.” The Wimmera Machinery Field Days will be at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong next week – March 1, 2 and 3. Mr Wilson said he expected a final tally of between 500 and 600 exhibitors to occupy almost 1000 available sites. “The strength of the field days from day one is first and foremost it is a large farming-focused event. That’s what has been its backbone since 1963 and that will continue,” he said. “The ability of farmers in this area and their willingness to continually increase
their knowledge and adapt to and adopt best practice farming means they are always looking to use the latest cutting-edge products. “This interest in the newest and latest technology means machinery companies always have a presence and focus at the field days.”
Strong numbers
Mr Wilson said exhibitor numbers were strong across indoor as well as outdoor sites. “What we’re finding every year is that machinery dealers are getting bigger and are always looking for more room,” he said. “Their machines are also getting bigger and putting on a good showcase at this event is very important. “For example, 30 years ago the space taken up by 12 companies is now taken up by three. It’s a trend that trickles up each year. “They have the biggest and best machines they want to display and the key is, considering the space we have, we can always be accommodating. We have a site that can get those large machines in. We also often have exhibitors sharing sites with allied businesses, dealerships or groups.” Mr Wilson added it was also important
the field days always provided space for smaller exhibitors. “In many cases small exhibitors who used to be outdoors are now all indoors at the site,” he said. Mr Wilson said field days organisers were determined to provide something that had an appeal to everyone in the region. “This is a major event. Everyone in our region has a direct or indirect link to agriculture,” he said. “We want to make sure the field days is here for people on the land but we also want to present something for people who don’t have that direct connection. “The social aspect of the field days has always been important. There are people who use it as that one day of the year when they catch up with mates. “There are always plenty of attractions, products and displays that capture the interest of a broad variety of patrons. “We have between 30 and 40 new exhibitors this year, with a mixture of machinery dealers, lifestyle and agriculture businesses. “The challenge every year is to set up the event centre so it flows well for both patrons and exhibitors. “There is a lot of shuffling of sites around so there are also opportunities for late exhibitors because of the size of the venue.”
FOR ALL GENERATIONS: The Wimmera Machinery Field Days provides plenty for adults and children. Pictured at last year’s event are, from left, top, Robbie and Aidan Last, and bottom, their grandfather Richard and father Rick.

Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
President’s message Welcome to the 54th annual Wimmera Machinery Field Days,
The Wimmera Machinery Field Days has built a proud reputation of providing patrons with the finest three-day event to showcase the best in world-class broadacre agriculture machinery and technology while also promoting everything you need to enjoy what the Wimmera has to offer. Although there are many tough times in agriculture, we pride ourselves on presenting an event that emphasises a social day to meet old acquaintances and make new ones while mingling though business and lifestyle interests. In many ways, we are also promoting the ‘can do’ attitude of agriculture while enjoying the broad skies and relaxed way of life of the Wimmera. The passion and dedication of the volunteer organising committee and staff is a clear demonstration of the importance of the event and the desire to bring exhibitors and patrons together in a celebration of agriculture. It is with great appreciation that we also recognise all of our valued sponsors and the many hours given by community groups who significantly contribute to the ongoing success of the Wimmera Machinery Field Days. We consider all our exhibitors to be vital to the ongoing success of our event. They have endeavoured to provide everything that is required to maintain productivity and profitability in the business of agriculture, while also offering essentials for family, friends and our region to enjoy – the reasons why we dedicate our time to the industry. Again, I welcome you all to the 2016 Wimmera Machinery Field Days. I hope your visit provides you with ideas to drive profitability for your business, tools to succeed and a chance to enjoy the lifestyle, working in a rural community offers. David Jochinke, Wimmera Machinery Field Days president
CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINMENT: The MikMaks will perform at Wimmera Machinery Field Days next week.
Field day for families
A
Wimmera Machinery Field Days traditional family day on the Wednesday is set to expand with a huge array of attractions for children scheduled for the field days auditorium. Field days organisers are deliberately ramping up Wednesday features in an effort to make the event more family friendly. Field days manager Murray Wilson said auditorium activities would provide many features aimed at children under-10.

“There’s going to be a lot of primary school kids at home on the Wednesday and we want them and their families to come and be part of the field days,” he said. Among attractions between 10am and 1pm will be two live shows featuring characters Hoot and Hootabelle from ABC Kids. Western Victorian children’s musical group the MikMaks, a hit during Grampians Carols by Candlelight last year, will also perform its high-energy and interactive show. “The MikMaks are all off
farms and they will create a mini mosh pit for kids to have plenty of room to dance. And the kids will be able to catch up with them afterwards,” Mr Wilson said. “There’s a really strong children’s focus. The key is that it is especially for families and people really miss this opportunity.” The field days will feature a variety of activities and presentations throughout March 1, 2 and 3. Companies will again demonstrate their products in the auditorium on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
There will also be cooking demonstrations, this year featuring Rick Heinrich from Halls Gap’s award-winning Kookaburra restaurant. Mr Heinrich’s cooking show will be called Saucing the Duck. He will take patrons through different ways of preparing duck, a speciality dish at his restaurant. Part of the demonstrations will be a chance for someone to win a dinner for two. Various prizes are also up for grabs at the gate and for exhibitors who present the best site during the three days.

Fashion shows feature at field days
W
immera models will showcase a range of latest designs for rural women during a fashion parade at the field days.
Country Lifestyle co-ordinator Wendy Byrne said the committee was excited to welcome a formal fashion parade back to the three-day event. “We haven’t had a businessfocused parade for the past few years,” she said. “Horsham College has been running one about five or six years, so it will be great to have the two parades this year.” New Horsham Plaza business Noni B is on board for 2016, offering fashion for rural women and the ‘young at heart’. “The fashion parades have always been popular,” Mrs Byrne said. “The college students will parade several designs, mostly from last year because the field days are so early in the year. “They always do a great job. Highlights will include dresses from last year’s year12 VCE class and deb dresses from a 2015 debutante ball. ” The ‘Horsham College has Got Talent’ showcase will feature work from students in years 10, 11 and 12.
Mrs Byrne said models would take to the catwalk accompanied by a live singing performance. “There will also be a dance routine by students, which is sure to impress,” she said. Mrs Byrne encouraged people attending the field days to attend the showcase to support the students as they expressed their creativity and demonstrated their emerging skills. The student showcase will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2pm. The formal fashion parade will be on Tuesday and Thursday at 11.30am in the auditorium. Mrs Byrne said there would be no formal parade on Wednesday because of family day activities. “We will have Hoot and Hootabelle performing at 10am and at noon, with The MikMaks taking to the stage at 11am and 1pm,” she said. “There will also be a range of interesting demonstrations throughout the three days. We’ll have a Tri Nature demonstration, with all natural hand creams, along with Enjo and Chef’s Toolbox demos.” Mrs Byrne encouraged people to look at the field days program to ensure they did not miss out on the many activities and demonstrations on offer this year.
PARADE: Horsham College students will again showcase their designs at fashion parades at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days. This year, field days organisers have re-introduced a formal fashion parade featuring Noni B clothing for women. Pictured above left are Horsham College students modelling in past years. Below left, Enjo senior consultatnt Christine May during a presentation at last year’s field days. Enjo will be one of many demonstrations at the auditorium at next week’s field days.

Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Bike-blended smoothies Smoothie bikes will be a feature in the Country Gourmet Pavilion at the 2016 Wimmera Machinery Field Days.
FIELD DAYS FUN: Intake navigator Robyn Brain and Rural and Remote Engagement worker Mal Coutts at last year’s event.
Wimmera Uniting Care will offer bike-blended smoothies for a gold coin donation this year, rather than charging $5 a smoothie. Intake manager Louise Netherway said the agency recognised the past year had been particularly tough on Wimmera farmers and businesses, and wanted to give something back at the field days. “The past two years we have run fundraisers for our Rural and Remote Engage-
ment, RARE, program and it has been well supported thanks to the generosity of everyone at the field days,” she said. “This year our RARE program is being funded through the Drought Assistance Program so we wanted to change the emphasis from fundraising to fun!” Field days patrons will be able to choose from six delicious flavours including banana smoothies, mango and strawberry smoothies, iced coffee, chocolate milkshake, lemon crush and an apple berry refresher. They will then be encouraged to hop on the smoothie
bike, and pedal for a short time to blend it. Mrs Netherway said if people’s legs were a bit tired from a long day’s walk around the field days site, Wimmera Uniting Care’s intake team would be on-hand to do the hard work for them. She thanked the Wimmera Machinery Field Days committee for its support and making the feature possible. “The field days committee has consistently supported us over the years to have a presence and be able to raise money,” she said. “We look forward to continuing this partnership into the future.”
Increasing community connections
W
immera Uniting Care’s Drought Assistance Team members have encouraged Wimmera Machinery Field Days patrons to come and have a chat with them at the event.
Team members will be set up next to the Moore Exhibition Centre to introduce themselves, provide information and listen to the challenges the community is facing. Rural and Remote Engage-
ment, RARE, worker Mal Coutts said he, along with other RARE workers, drought co-ordinators and counsellors, hoped to become familiar with the people, regional businesses and other service organisations within the various communities where the program operated. “The field days is not just a place to explore new products and get great deals,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to catch up with mates, have a yarn and network. We’ll be there doing
Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
exactly that; putting a face to some new names in our team, increasing our connections in the community and encouraging everyone to talk to each other – you don’t have to carry your worries alone. “We’ll also be able to provide information and advice to those seeking it for themselves as well as friends or family members.” Mr Coutts said the Drought Assistance Program was available to residents in Horsham
Rural City, as well as Hindmarsh, West Wimmera, Yarriambiack and Buloke shires.
Resilience
The program aims to build resilience in drought-affected areas, provide services to people who would not otherwise access support and enhance the capacity of existing services and community networks to cope with mental health issues. Workers can also provide information and referrals onto other services such as Rural
www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au
Financial Counselling or other specialised services. “It’s been another tough year on the land and thanks to the Department of Social Services, we are in a position to be able to help,” Mr Coutts said. “We’re not just here for the farmers either – we understand that drought has an impact across the whole community. “We accept referrals from friends, family members and community services so if you can see someone struggling to
cope – don’t wait – give us a call so we can help support that person.” Mr Coutts said the program was funded through to June 30, but he hoped the Federal Government would recognise there was a need for longerterm support and provide an extension. For more information, call Wimmera Uniting Care on 1800 114 195, email intake@wuc.org.au or visit the agency’s website, www.wuc. org.au/get-help.

he Wimmera Machinery Field Days will again host an exciting freestyle motocross stunt team as a key special feature. Hugely successful and popular in 2015, the stunt riders from Factory FMX will bring their live show to the event at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong.

culture machines, which will be lined up under the motocross jumps area. Field days manager Murray Wilson said the stunt riders would be a huge drawcard for the event. “With the region’s strong connection to motocross and a first-class track nearby it is a great fit for the field days,” he said.
“It’s also fantastic to have major field days exhibitor O’Connors show its support by providing farm vehicles and machinery for the team to leap over, which is sure to be an impressive sight for patrons.” The team from Factory FMX Motocross will perform three shows daily at this year’s field days.

Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Projects on show at 2016 field days
T
here will be something for everyone who visits the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources marquee at Wimmera Machinery Field Days.
Department co-ordinator Nicole deCourcy-Ireland said it was a team effort to promote the work the department did, not only in the grains industry, but across the region. Visitors to site at D1-4 will find the following:
Agronomy and seasonal risk
Hear the latest in agronomic research and climate outlook for the coming season. Learn about work on sensors to help farmers make informed decisions at paddock level. Discussions will also centre on soil water reserves through the department’s probe network. Agronomists will be on hand to talk about the seasonal outlook for 2016 and how to manage crops, with a focus on nitrogen management after a dry year.
People can also meet a newly-recruited second cohort of graduates to the DEDJTRGRDC funded Agronomist Development Program.
Pathology
Plant phenomics The department team aims to speed up and improve the assessment of crop plants to underpin faster delivery of new varieties for Victorian and Australian growers. They will outline work in the recently established Plant Phenomics Victoria facility, which contains a state-of-theart automated high-throughput phenotyping system to assess crop plants for traits such as drought tolerance and nutrient use efficiency. Visitors will also have an opportunity to see some of the new tools and equipment the team uses in custom-made automated rainout shelters for field-based phenotyping to assess plants for drought tolerance.
Grains Genebank The Australian Grains Gene-
ON DISPLAY: The Australian Grains Genebank’s Dr Sally Norton will be at the field days showcasing its programs. bank site will showcase the new Get into Grains Program, aimed at grades five and six students, along with a fascinating display of seeds. There will
be plenty of interactive games designed to be both fun and informative, helping children learn all about seeds and seed storage.
The cereal pathology group will have its new seeder on display and the most recent disease guides available. The cereal pathology group works to improve knowledge of plant diseases in order to protect crops from diseases and minimise the effect on growers. To do this they have a new single row seeder that arrived just in time for sowing. In its first season 50,000 individual rows were sown over six days throughout the growing season. Each row is then individually assessed for disease. Management of diseases will be just as important this year as any other, because conditions conducive to disease can cause rapid increase in disease in crops.
Animal health Animal health staff will be available to talk with farmers about challenges facing them in dry conditions. The prolonged dry period has meant intestinal worms have been kept to
manageable levels without the necessity of drenching in many cases. With the summer rain this might change for some producers and staff are asking producers to be mindful of this when checking stock. In addition, the rain has allowed the growth of summer weeds, such as heliotrope, which might be toxic to stock – keeping an eye on weeds in paddocks is essential for stock health.
Bushfire-risk land
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning display focuses on the short and longer-term bushfire planning undertaken on public land in the Wimmera and Mallee. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet staff and view proposed fuel-reduction activities being undertaken in the next three years, as well as a longer-term Strategic Bushfire Risk Landscape Planning, with a three to 40-year time frame. Project Phoenix, a world’s best practice bushfire simulation model, will be on display.
Drought support Farmers wanting information or questions answered about drought support can call into a Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources marquee at Wimmera Machinery Field Days. Department staff will be on hand to outline the range of workshops and information available to help farmers through dry times. The department has organised dozens of information sessions in past months, providing guidance on a range of dryseason issues. There are many more sessions planned as the 2016 season progresses to ensure producers do not go it alone during the drought. Topics include drought-preparedness workshops, autumn feeding, farm planning, managing livestock in drought times, livestock health and farm-business planning. The sessions not only provide valuable information but are an important chance for landholders to get off the farm and socialise with other farmers experiencing drought conditions. Copies of popular drought feeding guides will be available to pick up at the field days to keep in the farm vehicle or office. A range of information about the latest grains research, cereal disease guide, animal health and other natural resource management information is also available at www.agriculture. vic.gov.au. People can visit sites D1-4 to talk to the team during the Wimmera Machinery Field Days. More information on drought and the workshops can be found at: www.agriculture.vic.gov.au/drought.

MAN OF CHARACTER: Woodchop champion David Foster was a popular guest of Horsham Hydraulics at last year’s field days. He is pictured having a laugh with a young field days patron.
Bring a friend to the field days BY JAALA PULFORD, MEMBER FOR WESTERN VICTORIA
T
he Wimmera is closely becoming my second home. This is something I proudly and routinely say to friends, colleagues in parliament and regional communities.
Over the summer I have met countless farmers, community groups, business leaders and families across Kaniva, Wedderburn, Horsham, Ararat, Birchip and Wycheproof. This was such a valuable opportunity for farmers to get a taste of what is to come. It is well known that our Victorian farmers are at the forefront in their adoption of leading-edge technology to advance their on-farm efficiency – that is exactly what the Wimmera Machinery Field Days is all about. One of the best things about the field days is there is something in it for everyone. It brings farmers, families and rural communities together, something that is vital at this time.
Jaala Pulford It is no surprise to anyone in the Wimmera that the effects of dry conditions are being felt right across the community. But the Andrews government, and myself in the capacity as Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, will not let farmers and regional communities go it alone – we are standing by you. Communities told us that young families needed support and we listened. It is the role of government to not only support rural communities during tough times, but to help stimulate the economy, attract new investment opportunities and create jobs in regional centres. I want to pay a special tribute to the organisers of the annual
three-day event – a gathering that is cemented in many farmers, agronomists and agricultural leaders’ calendars. It gives me great pleasure to welcome the many visitors, trade displays and in particular students to the field days. Young people and young farmers are flocking to the field days, with a real resurgence in recent years. This is a credit to the agricultural institution that is ‘Longy’ – Longerenong College. The Andrews government believes our young farmers are truly the leaders of tomorrow. I am committed to engaging with young farmers and hearing the issues that really mean the most to them. I encourage everyone to get to the Wimmera Machinery Field Days in 2016 and enjoy it with family and friends. This just might be chance you have been looking for to invest in a new tractor, upgrade your crop technology or simply catch up with friends, neighbours and family. Enjoy it and make sure you bring someone along who has never been before!
Promoting sustainability GWMWater will again have a presence at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days to promote water-supply sustainability and provide updates on projects and system developments. The corporation will stress a need for people to observe permanent water-saving rules including details about when urban customers can water their gardens. Staff will also be on hand to explain a Rural Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016

Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2016
Helicopter rides at field days site Helicopter rides will be among new features at this year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days.
ray Wilson said Grampians Helicopters had added a new dimension to the field days experience.
Grampians Helicopters, based at Stawell and with strong links to the broader region, will offer deals to patrons keen to get a bird’s-eye view of the field days site and surrounding country at Longerenong.
“They will have a helipad set up at the eastern end of the site and will be providing flights for all three days,” he said.
Field days manager Mur-
“Wimmera Events Centre with the field days in full swing presents quite an impressive view from the air.”
Snakes on show All things slithering will again be on on show at this year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days when the Black Snake team returns with its collection of snakes.
Blake Snake will again have its snake pit, providing patrons with a chance to see and hear explanations about Australia’s venomous reptiles at four shows on each day of the event. Australia is home to some of the deadliest snakes in the world and some of them call the Wimmera home. Eastern brown and tiger snakes are relatively common in parts of the Wimmera and red-bellied black snakes also frequent some areas. All are often misunderstood. Blake Snake will also bring a collection of Australian mammals and last year had an owl keeping watch over proceedings. When not presenting a demonstration with venomous snakes at its site in the Livestock Block, the Blake Snake team will provide opportunities for people to get up close and personal and interact with other reptiles such as pythons and mammals. Black Snake has been a popular attraction at the field days since 2008.
IN THE NURSERY: Maye Porter, of Pimpinio, enjoys the animal nursery at last year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days. Event organisers are planning extra children’s activities at this year’s field days.

very year I look forward to the Wimmera Machinery Field Days – the premier agricultural event for the region.
This three-day event attracts thousands of visitors from far and wide to learn about advances in the agricultural sector, to buy new goods or machinery, or to catch up with friends and family. The field days are a great opportunity for me to listen to locals and to hear how I can best support and improve our

The government’s drought relief packages don’t go far enough, and should include relief for water and council rates. The Nationals are strong advocates for people in regional Australia. This year the Nationals are celebrating 100 years of standing up for country communities.
