EASTER CLIP: Concongella’s Greta Carey, 18, hams it up with brother Marty in preparation for a major transformation at Stawell Races this Easter. Greta, with hair so long it is almost down to her waist, will shave it all off to raise money in the fight against leukaemia as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. She will also donate her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths to be made into a wig. Greta has a fundraising target of $20,000 and after several sausage sizzles, has already skipped past the $7000 mark. Greta will lose her hair after a fashionson-the-field presentation at the races. She is urging people to donate on line at website my.leakaemiafoundation.org.au/ gretacarey. People can also mail donations to her address to 56 Sycamores Road, Concongella 3380 or make a donation on the day of the races. • Kaniva Guides to lose ponytails, see page 9.
$600,000 donation
A
$600,000 gift from Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation has wiped off more than half the money required to complete Horsham’s Town Hall redevelopment project. A community fundraising effort, seeking donations from organisations, businesses and individuals, has a $1-million target. Geoff Handbury, now of Hamilton but maintaining a strong affinity with Horsham, said the donation would go
specifically to upgrading Horsham Regional Art Gallery, part of the town hall project. “I believe the gallery is really important, particularly from an education perspective,” he said. “It is important that it is restored in a way that is inclusive of everyone in the community. The public needs to understand that it is there for them, not simply a select few. “When I was on the land, Horsham was our town. I have a soft spot for Horsham and its community. I’m really excited
with what they are doing with the gallery. I also feel very rewarded to be part of it.” Mr Handbury, an owner of The Weekly Advertiser and radio stations 3WM and MIXXFM as part of ACE Radio Broadcasters, added that the donation reflected the depth in which the Horsham district community had supported the ACE network’s newspaper and radio operations. “It is through community support that we can do this. In a sense, we’re giving back to the community what it has already
given to us,” he said. Horsham Mayor Mark Radford, in welcoming the donation, said the gift was indicative of Mr Handbury’s ongoing commitment to Horsham. “The significant donation of $600,000 is testament to the strong support Mr Handbury has shown for Horsham and the Wimmera, time and time again,” he said. “The Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation donation will be used to ensure the Horsham Regional Art Gallery improvements leave a lasting legacy of
high-quality gallery space – for generations to come,” he said. The Town Hall project’s major art gallery developments include rejuvenation of Handbury Gallery, improvements to public gallery spaces, construction of a community education space and art classroom, and the construction of a dedicated loading dock and professional art-storage system. Mr Radford: “In acknowledgement of the significance of Mr Handbury’s commitment to making sure the community can enjoy the benefits of
the gallery, we are proposing that the new education space and art classroom be named the Geoff and Helen Handbury Education Centre. “Along with the existing Handbury Gallery, this will ensure that the Handbury name is linked to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery for many years to come.” Work on the $17-million Horsham Town Hall and art gallery redevelopment project started in February last year and is scheduled to be finished by the end of this year.
