The Nextivity Cel-Fi is designed to be a coverage enhancement solution where the coverage is limited by low signal strength. All you need is somewhere in your house that gets 1 bar of 3G mobile signal for the Nextivity Cel-Fi to provide indoor coverage, and if you don’t get that 1 bar of mobile service required then the external antenna port along with an antenna will boost signal getting the Cel-Fi Window Unit. Cel-Fi is quick and easy to set-up, generally taking less than 5 minutes, Cel-Fi signal booster automatically configures itself according to your environment making for a quick and easy setup. The Nextivity Cel-Fi repeater has been approved by the Australian Communication Authority, it will in no way interfere or degrade with the mobile network meaning other users of the mobile network are not impacted upon. Unlike illegal repeaters the Cel-Fi communicates with the mobile base station, it knows how far away from the mobile base station it is and then it can determine things like how much power to transmit, it doesn’t just amplify the signal by a set amount like illegal repeaters and swamp the mobile network and impact on other users.

the comfort of your own home or office. Mobile radiation is increased when your phone is using maximum power trying to maintain a network connection, by increasing the indoor signal strength using Cel-Fi your phone wont have to work as hard, lower its power and therefore decrease radiation for the user. Your mobile phones battery life will be greatly increased with improved indoor coverage, your phone uses more power in an attempt to boost poor signal, and as a result you will consume a lot more power. Using the Cel-Fi system your mobile should be high and the battery will last noticeably longer whilst you talk and browse the internet. Slow internet speeds on your mobile are often caused by poor signal strength. If you can relate to the frustration of trying to access email or the internet on a slow connection, then the Nextivity will amplify 3G mobile signal and increase your data, email, internet, video and social networking speeds which will make for a more enjoyable experience.

Field Days president’s message By Field Days president Andrew Bell
H
ello and welcome to the 52nd annual Wimmera Machinery Field Days.
On behalf of the organising committee and staff, I hope your visit to our event is a wonderful experience, whether you are visiting for the first time, or a regular visitor or exhibitor. The three-day event this year promises to showcase the best that Australian and overseas technology and innovation can offer the person on the land, as well as exhibiting all the other facets of finance, lifestyle, merchandise and events centred around agriculture. The Wimmera region experienced a kind season last year, with many broad-acre farmers harvesting average to above-average yields, and prices were very good. Some areas

experienced frosting issues late in the season, therefore some cereals were cut for hay, and some legume crops yielded less than expected. Overall the 2013 harvest will be remembered as a profitable year for most Wimmera farmers. The planning for the 2014 Field Days began soon after last year’s
event finished. It has been a culmination of 12 months of meetings, planning and working bees. I congratulate the management team and committee on their efforts to again improve the event. Each year after consulting with exhibitors and contractors, the committee come up with new ideas and systems to make the event run more smoothly than the last, and more efficiently for our important exhibitors and the visiting public. Of course the weather is always out of our control, but the committee attempts to put systems in place for all meteorological events. I thank all the volunteers and community organisations that help run the event. There are about 300 extra people needed to undertake many on ground services and catering duties for the week of the field days.
For many of the groups the field days presents an opportunity for major fundraising for their clubs, and therefore the committee and community groups work together to form a vital symbiotic relationship. I commend these groups for their efforts. I would like to thank our corporate sponsors and supporters, for supporting the event. A special congratulations to O’Connors Farm Machinery who are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary, thank you for your support over many years. A big thank you to the wives, husbands, partners and children of the field days committee, who are very supportive of the efforts needed to run this event. Once again I welcome you all to the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, I hope you have an enjoyable and fulfilling visit, a safe trip home and a profitable season ahead.

Horsham College will again co-ordinate the Wimmera Machinery Field Days Fashion Parade featuring designs made by the students.
By DEAN LAWSON
Drawing exhibitors from across the country and overseas the Field Days site at Wimmera Events Centre transforms for two weeks into one of the largest mass gatherings of agricultural machinery, farming equipment and regional business in Australia. With more than $300-million dollars of new agricultural machinery on site, the Field Days become the economic hot zone in the Wimmera. An estimated $50-million dollars in trade is generated during three days. Field Days manager Murray Wilson said exhibitors used the event to set up long-term business relationships which could lead to sales being generated throughout the year. “It shows the importance of face-to-face marketing and showcasing products at targeted key events,” he said. “The Field Days directly injects several million dollars into the regional economy. It eclipses any other annual event, booking out all available accommodation throughout the region and increasing the demand for regional goods and services to record levels.” More than a million dollars worth of large marquees and exhibition equipment develop on site, joining almost 1.5 acres of modern purpose-built permanent, undercover fully air-conditioned pa-
Students will model the designs on a catwalk in the Field Days auditorium from 2-3pm each day of the event. The Fabulous Fashions parade will give the public a fantastic opportunity to see the creative and innovative work of Horsham College’s year nine, 10, 11 and 12 students. Horsham College teacher Tina Fitzgerald said the designs featured in the parades would be from work made in class last year. “The students will be exhibiting their emerging skills and creativity,” she said. “Year 12 students will parade casual wear made towards the end of last year as a lead in to their final year at school. “Another highlight will be dresses from the 2013 year 12 VCE class.” Ms Fitzgerald said an added bonus at this year’s fashion parade would be the college’s home economic students providing hors d’oeuvres for people watching the show.

vilions, which are all at capacity this year. Mr Wilson said the site was fast becoming known as the second largest ‘city’ in the region during the event, with almost half of the Wimmera’s population attending the Field Days. “It is fantastic to have such a massive event in this part of Victoria. The benefits are outstanding and it is one of Australia’s major agricultural Field Days,” he said. The Wimmera Machinery Field Days is a not-for-profit community-based organisation led by regional volunteers from farming and agricultural backgrounds. In its 51st year, the Field Days have been in the first week of March every year since 1963.

New sculpture categories and prizes
A
popular Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days includes new competition categories and increased prize money this year.
Now in its ninth year, the competition taps into the creative talents of people across the region and always draws a large field of entries. Artists use everyday and often unusual on-farm products to create a vast array of artworks which reflect a different side to farming ingenuity. Field Days manager Murray Wilson said that the overwhelming success and large number of entries had given organisers an opportunity to inject more new and exciting features this year. “We have introduced more entry categories, giving entrants more chances to win great prizes,” he said. “Along with our fantastic first prize and open competitions we now offer categories for farm sculptures to be made out of wire, corrugated iron and a small sculpture category. Prize money totalling $6000 is up for grabs this year with business Agritech Rural return-
ing as major sponsor. Agritech Rural director Daryl McCrae: “We are proud to continue our long association with supporting the Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition at the Field Days.” Mr Wilson said ACE Radio Broadcasters had also come ‘back on board’ as a key supporter. “It is great to have them back because they were an inaugural sponsor back in 2006 and were involved for many years,” he said. Victorian Farm Sculpture 2013 state champion Ross Campbell, of Nhill, as part of his first prize last year, entered his winning sculpture and other works in the $10,000 National Farm Sculpture Awards at the Spirit of the Land Festival in Lockhart, NSW, last October. Liz Pertzel from the Spirit of the Land Festival said it was fantastic to have a partnership with the Wimmera Field Days and the Victorian Farm Sculpture competition. “We look forward to hosting this year’s winner at our festival again this October,” she said. The sculptor who wins this year’s event at Longerenong will pocket $2500 and will travel to and stay at Lockhart NSW for the Spirit of the Land Festival free of charge.

he economic value of agriculture at regional, state, national and international levels in Australia will be more than evident at the 52nd Wimmera Machinery Field Days at Longerenong.
It is far from a secret that the industry underpins the Wimmera-Mallee economy and many other regional areas across the country. But for some it is only when they wander through the sites and the latest machinery at the field days that the size and importance of agriculture truly hits home. The size and technology involved with some of the machinery is staggering and it becomes easy to understand why Australian broadacre farmers are among some of the best and most advanced in the world. Confidence in the future, confidence in agriculture and confidence in an iconic Wimmera event was a catch cry of last year’s field days and, despite various problems in various other Australian industries, a similar message resonates again from this year’s event. The elements and especially this summer’s fires, have again tested the Wimmera-Mallee’s resilience

Science, grains, fire and fauna
G
rains extension and research, agricultural biosecurity, fire, fisheries and native plants and animals will be among the features at the Department of Environment and Primary Industries site at Wimmera Machinery Field Days.
With the recent merger of two departments to form DEPI, the display is promising to be bigger and better this year. Wimmera Catchment Management Authority will also join in the tent, joining Greening Australian and Conservation Volunteers. Horsham DEPI centre leader Terry Lewis said visitors would be greeted by a ‘Welcome to DEPI’ mobile reception to help them navigate their way around the site. With the Wimmera being the grain growing capital of Victoria, there will be plenty of grains information at the site. “We’ll have the latest climate information for croppers and information about how they can make the most of social media and tools such as the DEPI Crop Disease App,” Mr Lewis said. “We’ll also have resident crop doctor Frank Henry on site to answer questions about the crop
diseases and issues that may be arising in the coming season. “Soil health experts will be on hand and visitors can find out about upcoming farm planning courses on offer in the Wimmera, Western District and Mallee.” Visitors can see some of the seeds from the Australian Grains Genebank, which will soon be opened in Horsham. The public will also gain an insight the many grains research activities carried out by scientists at Horsham and have a chance to taste food made from pulses that have been bred and grown in the region.
Plenty to see
But it won’t just be about grain – with plenty of information about animal health, pests, plant standards and farm chemicals issues at the biosecurity stand. “Healthy stock are vital and officers will be on hand to provide information and assistance on the latest animal health issues and safe and legal use of chemicals on the farm,” Mr Lewis said. “There will also be information about highly invasive weeds that pose a threat to farms and our natural environment and also about best practice rabbit control.” With water having returned to
many lakes in the Wimmera, fishing is also an important recreation for the region. DEPI fisheries officers will be on hand to talk about angling in the region including the rules and regulations and what waterways have been stocked with a range of fish species.
Mr Lewis said DEPI was much more than agriculture and biodiversity staff would be on hand to talk about the region’s natural environment including threatened species and important information on DEPI’s new land clearing rules. Staff from DEPI’s Vicmap Position and Vicmap Topographic Mapping will be showcasing GPS net and topographic mapping. ADVICE AND DISPLAYS: Heather Drendel and Robert O’Shannessy, above, from DEPI will be on hand to discuss farm planning at the field days.
Fire is a vital issue for the region and DEPI fire staff will also make a welcome return to site this year with a range of exciting exhibits, including information about DEPI’s three-year burn plan and fire operations plan, and a display of the aerial drip torch. The display will also cover strategic fire planning, phoenix modelling, a rolling photo presentation and a fire table where visitors can act out parts in a fire operation.

Oilseed centre boost for college
W
immera Machinery Field Days visitors who make the most of the event to explore facilities at neighbouring Longerenong College will notice a dramatic change in the amount of infrastructure on site.
In what was an open paddock 12 months ago now stands a $14 million world-class wheat and oilseeds and breeding centre. The centre, which heavily involves Workco and Longerenong College students, is one of seven similar centres around the world and represents a 30year commitment from Bayer CropScience to the site. The Bayer CropScience Breeding Centre, which officially opened last month, is in the process of creating up to 20 full-time jobs and many casual jobs. Workco manages the college and board chairman Donald Carter, said the development was a great vote of confidence in one of the few remaining agricultural training institutions in the country. “The investment by Bayer CropScience, as well as the accompanying infrastructure investment by the Victorian Government and Horsham Rural City Council shows the confidence that those organisations have in Longerenong College,” Mr Carter said. The Victorian Government is pro-

viding $1.24 million to upgrade road access to the facility, along Molyneaux and Tuckers roads and College Drive and Horsham Rural City Council has also contributed $100,000 to the project. “Such a prestigious industry partnership is a coup for Longerenong Col-

lege and the Wimmera, and secures our place at the forefront of broadacre cropping training and research,” Mr Carter said. Bayer CropScience’s plan to establish its Breeding Centre at Longerenong was influenced by the availability of a secure water supply, thanks to the
Wimmera Mallee Pipeline. “Here in the Wimmera we are experienced at working collaboratively. This project has been no exception, with significant contributions made by Regional Development Victoria, Wimmera Development Association, Horsham Rural City Council, GWM Water
and Department of Higher Education and Skills, from whom Longerenong College is leased. Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty, along with his colleagues David Koch and Peter Walsh have also been hugely supportive,” Mr Carter said. Workco chief executive John Ackland said the Bayer CropScience investment illustrated college growth and augured well for further development at the campus. The Bayer CropScience Breeding Centre will strengthen the Wimmera’s reputation for grains research and production. It will also provide opportunities for the region’s agricultural producers to see benefits in quality seed production and yield enhancement. Mr Carter: “Clearly, if the seeds are being developed here in the Wimmera they will suit Wimmera conditions, which gives our farmers a great competitive advantage. “We have always been confident that Longerenong College will reach its goals of being the best dryland agricultural training centre in Australia. This investment will get us even closer to that goal, and will show funding bodies how critical Longerenong College is in the future of agriculture in Australia.” Longerenong College will again have a strong presence at this year’s field days.

GWMWater is again using the field days to provide people with a face-to-face explanation of how they can best access or use their water. Corporation representatives will base themselves in the Alan Heard Pavilion at Wimmera Events Centre during the field days, providing a vast array of information. Of particular interest will be detailed information on what impact bushfires in the region have
Latest flood data
O
ne of the most popular corners of Wimmera Catchment Management Authority’s Field Days display in past years has been a large computer monitor manned by members of the organisation’s flood team.
The CMA is expecting a high number of visitors again this year with two flood investigations completed in the past 12 months and a third underway. Results from the Natimuk and the Upper Wimmera Catchment Flood Investigations will be on display in the marquee that Wimmera CMA is sharing with the Department of Primary Industries and other groups at site D1-D4. People will also be able to touch base about the Mt William Creek Catchment Flood Investigation which encompasses the towns and surrounding rural areas of Stawell, Dadswells Bridge, Pomonal, Moyston, Mokepilly, Barton, Jallukar, Bellellen, Illawarra and Ledcourt.
Upper Wimmera Investigation
Developing improved flood-warning systems for the Upper Wimmera Catchment is among key recommendations of an investigation into flooding in the area. Upper Wimmera Catchment Flood Investigation consultants BMT WBM presented findings and recommendations at a community meeting in Landsborough Community Town Hall. The investigation has led to new flood-intensity maps showing different flood scenarios. These form recommendations for future flood-warning activities, emergency flood-action plans and local government planning schemes in the investigation’s 1500-square kilometre area. This area includes the towns and surrounding rural districts of Navarre, Landsborough, Elmhurst, Eversley, Crowlands, Joel Joel, Greens Creek and Campbells Bridge. Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, Northern Grampians and Pyrenees shire and Ararat Rural City councils, the Department of En-
vironment and Primary Industries and VICSES were all involved in the project. Wimmera CMA board chairperson Karen Douglas: “It is always very satisfying to reach this point in a flood investigation because we have tangible information to improve our planning, preparedness and response for future flood events. It’s fantastic to be able to show the community flood maps of their townships and surrounding areas as well as the recommendations on how to improve flood intelligence in this part of the catchment.” Mrs Douglas thanked people who contributed information to the investigation. “The contribution by the community throughout the project has been extremely valuable,” Mrs Douglas said. “Local knowledge has been the key to the investigation to ensure it reflects the on-ground situation for flooding in this area.”
Natimuk Flood Investigation
Wimmera CMA and a community steering committee have presented a final report to Horsham Rural City Council for the Natimuk Flood Investigation. The report includes recommendations for planning scheme amendments and flood-warning systems as well as a flood-emergency intelligence report to help emergency response agencies with future flood planning. The Natimuk Flood Investigation area is the catchment of Natimuk Creek, beginning south of Noradjuha and extending north to include Natimuk Lake.
Other Flood Investigations
Wimmera CMA has also completed flood investigations for Dimboola, Glenorchy, Halls Gap, Horsham, Jeparit, Warracknabeal and Beulah. The CMA has also completed a flow modelling study for the Wimmera River and Yarriambiack Creek between Glenorchy, Horsham and Warracknabeal.
Representatives will also be on hand to explain the benefits of requirement in having three day’s water storage on farms and be able to outline rebates available for water tanks and various water-saving household items. On each afternoon of the field days a GWMWater engineer involved in the process will be available for a discussion. The GWMWater team will also have plenty of fun with chances to win plenty of giveaways.
