EYES ON THE PRIZE: McKenzie Creek trainer Paul Preusker and partner Holly McKechnie are eyeing off Friday’s $50,000 Millers Horsham Cup with six-year-old gelding Magic Consol. Preusker is chasing his first Horsham Cup, while McKechnie hopes to collect her fourth, after riding Texan Warney to victory in three consecutive Horsham Cups from 2010-12. There will be plenty to keep racegoers entertained both on and off the track, including the CUB Clydesdales, live music from Mark Block and an afterschool children’s club for children who attend the cup with their parents. The Horsham Chemmart Pharmacy fashions on the field competition will offer a prize pool of $3000 for those dressed to impress. Emmetts expansion A

BY DEAN LAWSON

Wimmera agricultural machinery firm has declared its long-term faith in the future of regional broadacre farming by doubling its operations.

In a move underpinning confidence in the rural sector, John Deere farm machinery and equipment dealer Emmetts has confirmed it has taken control of a major South Australian dealership group. Emmetts, which operates four dealerships across the Wimmera-Mallee, has added Rosenberg Machinery Group Holdings, RMGH, to its stable. The move means, apart from branch-

es at Rupanyup, Horsham, Warracknabeal and Swan Hill, Emmetts will now operate South Australian dealerships in Kadina, Murray Bridge, Parndana on Kangaroo Island, Pinnaroo, Renmark and Roseworthy. The move also means the firm has doubled its workforce from 100 to 200. RMGH dealerships operate in key agricultural regions involved in cropping, horticulture, irrigation and grazing farm operations. Emmetts managing director Peter Emmett said the acquisition was in line with the company’s strategic growth objective. “Emmetts has recognised over the years that we needed to grow our deal-

ership footprint and the opportunity with Rosenbergs is a good fit for both businesses,” he said. “It’s not about getting big for the sake of it. Scale gives us the ability to employ and train highlyskilled people who can go on and add value to the bottom line of the farming businesses we service.” The expansion comes despite the Wimmera-Mallee enduring a tough season, confirming significant business confidence in the farming sector’s resilience.

Diversification Mr Emmett said the acquisition would provide the company with

greater exposure to diversified agricultural practices and the scale to provide world-class sales and service. He said branch branding had already changed and RMGH customers could expect business as usual. “We will be unifying branding under the Emmetts name and will work towards implementing our operating structure over the coming months,” he said. “There are great staff working in both businesses and this acquisition will provide a clear career path, greater opportunities and meet our goal of delivering excellent customer service.” Emmetts is a family business estab-

lished at Rupanyup in 1957 and now operates from a Horsham head office. It has been a John Deere dealer since 1989, and offers a range of specialised farming equipment. Member for Lowan Emma Kealy said the expansion was a great story involving a Wimmera business, especially considering the challenging environment of year-to-year farming circumstances. “It reflects the tremendous potential for growth and a major stamp of confidence in our region,” she said. “It also underpins how our region is consistently building on a rapidly expanding reputation as a worldwide leader in agricultural business.”
