SPEAKING UP: On average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence. One in three women have experienced physical and-or sexual violence perpetrated by someone known to them. As a survivor of domestic abuse, Ararat’s Danielle Jenkins, left, knows all too well how serious the problem is. Cancer funding wait BY DEAN LAWSON

M

ember for Lowan Emma Kealy has continued to urge the State Government to ‘come to the party’ with its contribution to a Wimmera Cancer Centre.

The Federal Government pledged $1-million in March, with Prime Minister Tony Abbott making a special trip to Horsham to make the announcement. Federal Government money

Mr Scott said the centre would help improve treatment options for all people in the Wimmera and reduce the number of peo-

ple forced to travel for treatment. A $50,000 gift from the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation will kick-start an August 14 radio telethon to raise money for the centre. The telethon on radio station MIXX FM will be part of the heath care group’s Rachael’s Wish fundraising appeal to generate the extra $1-million needed to build the centre.
