The siblings theorize together that perhaps there is another family of Nazis, the Hanters, who are hiding another group of Jews somewhere, and maybe one of those Jews wrote the line about checking the spice for insects.

Charna finds a lost Dena and brings her to the factory.

CHAPTER FORTY NINE

“We need to talk, Yanku,” Binyamin said after he finished reading the note. He glanced into the back room, where about ten boys of various ages were waiting for him.

“About my spelling mistakes?” The boy scowled. “Everyone tells me about them. You want a pen to fix them?”

“No, that’s not the issue at all. Our conversation yesterday, about

my father’s matzeivah, was too short.”

Yanku glanced around worriedly. “The boys are waiting for you, in case you didn’t notice. You promised a shiur. And I promised it would be interesting.”

“It will be very interesting,” Binyamin reassured him. “But listen, I spoke to my sister the other day. She found out that I wanted to clean something off our father’s headstone, and she wanted to know what it was about. So I told her that when I scraped off the ink, someone was watching me, and then I spoke to him.”

“Did you tell her that it was me?”

Binyamin took a deep breath. “Yes.”

“And you told her what we talked about?”

“We hardly spoke, Yanku. All you told me was that you know what it says there, and that you know who wrote it, and you also know why. But you didn’t tell me anything more than that. You ran away too quickly.”

“And you went and told your sister the little bit that I did tell you?”

Yanku was quiet, not affirming but not denying.

“So I can understand if your father doesn’t let you continue discussing the issue. But maybe he’ll agree to speak to me himself?”

“The boys are waiting for you,” was the response of the thirteen-year-old. “And also, if you offered this shiur to me yesterday so that you’d have an excuse to come and talk to me again, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but you won’t get a word out of me.”

“I don’t want you to tell me anything if your father doesn’t let, and my sister already suggested this shiur a few days ago, as soon as I got this break. So the shiur has nothing to do with you. Alright, I’ll go in to the boys now.”

“What are you going to teach them?”

“Ten minutes of how to build useful tools from wire, and ten minutes about the parshah.”

“Nice.” It was a meager compliment.

“But before we part, I want to ask you to think about one thing.” Binyamin lowered his voice. “It’s not that I have any interest in digging into stories that are fifteen years old, and I have no plans of taking revenge on whoever harmed my father. But maybe we’ll have a way to prevent such a thing from happening again, if we know exactly what happened there.”

“If you dig too deep and learn what happened there,” the younger boy retorted, his eyes blazing, “then it will happen again, and you’ll be next in line.”

There are some especially long days, and today was one of them. When sixthirty came, and the children went running out of the classroom, Naomi took a deep breath. The effort to engage in simple routine actions relating to the preschool was so draining that she didn’t have a drop of energy left to wash the floor.

“Are you feeling okay?” Katy grilled her in her high-pitched voice.

“So-so,” Naomi said.

Rivku studied her from the side. “Just don’t tell me you’re going to ask for a day off tomorrow,” she snapped. “As it is, you owe me lots of hours.”

“No, no, b’ezras Hashem, I’ll be here.”

“But you can go now, if you want,” Katy offered. “I’ll wash the floor myself. Rivku, you can go, too, if you want. Naomi, maybe go to the infirmary?”

That was a good idea, not because Naomi wanted medical care that she didn’t need, baruch Hashem. She just wanted to see Babbe.

Why, actually? She wouldn’t share any of her suspicions with Babbe, at this point, as Binyamin and Aryeh had asked.

“And your mother?” she had asked Aryeh. “When I saw that sentence on the package, I immediately asked her what she thinks.”

“She for sure won’t do anything about it,” her husband had said. “And I imagine it’s a good idea for us to be very careful if we want to find out what really happened in that spice factory.”

Then Binyamin had told them about Tatte’s matzeivah and the strange conversation he’d had with the young Elkovitz boy, and she’d gone to sleep with a pounding headache.

She couldn’t consult with Babbe; she mustn’t. Still, her legs carried her to the infirmary.

“Here’s our teacher!” Dror Elkovitz’s voice hollered behind her.

Naomi turned and waved to him and his mother. It wasn’t difficult to hold back from saying anything to them regarding the black letters that Yanku Elkovitz had written on the matzeivah, not only because Suzy Elkovitz always had this air of distance about her, but primarily because Hauptmann Katarina was standing right beside her.

Naomi nodded politely to both women. She wanted to keep walking, but her eyes suddenly spotted an object that she had seen so many times before this but had become, just right now, something she wanted to grab with all her might: the cordless phone in Katarina’s hand.

A telephone. If she could only get hold of it, perhaps she could connect with the outside world, without saying who and what she was. Maybe this way she could find out if there was a labor camp for Jews that produced the Max Hanter spices!

The Nazi, who was unaware of Naomi’s thoughts, pointed to one of the buttons on the device and said something. Suzy, baby in her arms, nodded with understanding. “First you need to check the line,” she suggested.

“So come now and we’ll try that,” Katarina replied.

“To the manor house?” Dror asked with a huge smile. “Great! Yes, yes, Mama, come, let’s go there!”

“You’re not coming with me there. You’re going to Papa,” his mother said with her characteristically serious expression.

The boy shrugged. “I have no energy to walk all the way to the factory,” he whined.

“He and the baby can stay with me until the end of the workday,” Naomi interjected, not very politely. “When the men come home, I’ll send them.”

“That would be so nice of you!” Suzy released an aristocratic smile. “The baby should be calm now. And you, Dror—you’ll be a good boy, right?”

“For sure!” the boy exclaimed, and naturally moved his hand from his mother’s to Naomi’s.

“I’m just popping into the infirmary for a minute, to my grandmother,” Naomi informed Suzy as she carefully took the little one. “Then I’ll be going home. Is that okay with you? I won’t go inside, so she won’t catch anything.”

“That’s fine,” Suzy said. “Thank you so much, Naomi.” And she hurried after Hauptmann Katarina, toward the manor house.

“Your mother is very talented,” Naomi said to Dror, once the two women were in the distance. “She knows how to fix all kinds of important things in the camp.” She tried to remember what else she’d heard about Suzy Elkovitz nee Sherer’s golden hands.

“She once fixed Herr Josef Wangel’s watch!” the boy boasted. “I saw it, because she brings the expensive things home to fix late at night. But mostly she fixes the sewing and embroidery machines. The only things she doesn’t know how to fix are the big machines in the factory—that’s what she told me. They already called her a few times for that, and she didn’t go. My father fixes those machines. She taught him a little bit, and then he taught himself the rest.”

Sure, Sherer’s daughter wouldn’t get her delicate fingers dirty in puddles of grease and oil. Not that there was clear water running through the pipes of the sewing and embroidery machines, which were at least twenty years old…

“Where are we going? To the infirmary? What, Babbe Sara Liba is sick?”

“Chas v’chalilah! She volunteers there.”

“Right. She helped take care of our baby, Cherut!” he enthused. “Until she got all better and came home!”

The boy didn’t argue, but it was clear that something about the adults’ strange theory didn’t exactly sit right with him.

“I would have liked to hear her voice over the telephone, too,” Naomi said carefully. She stopped at the door of the infirmary. “I never heard what it sounds like when people talk on a phone.”

“My grandfather has something like a telephone on the wall. This way, Herr Josef tells him important things that he needs to do.”

“Really? A telephone at home?”

“Not at home. In the office.”

Binyamin had once told her that with telephones, someone can talk to almost every place in the world. And Babbe had told her that they existed already when she was little; they would go to a special office and speak into the telephone to someone who was even in a different city. So of course, they couldn’t bring such a dangerous instrument here, and the devices in the office could only connect with the Nazis. But maybe from Katarina’s phone she could call someone on the outside. The problem, of course, was getting her hands on it.

If you answered “Yes” to three or more of the questions above, you might be engaging in emotional eating.

People who are emotional eaters use food to make themselves feel better. In other words, they eat to fill emotional needs, rather than to fill their stomachs. This doesn’t mean that anyone who occasionally has a piece of chocolate as a pick-me-up is an emotional eater. However, if eating is the major emotional coping mechanism, then people can get stuck in an unhealthy cycle that is difficult to emerge from. This cycle begins when the first impulse when tired, bored, or stressed is to open a bag of chips. The issue is that the food only temporarily satisfies the emotional hunger. After eating, the person usually feels shame and guilt and has not gotten to the root of the emotion to begin with. This can lead to weight gain and low self-esteem.

First, let’s discuss some of the reasons behind emotional eating.

• Stress and anxiety. Today, many people experience stress and anxiety related to their families, jobs, and heavily scheduled lives. This stress can create anxiety, and many “feed” their anxiety by sitting down to a pint of ice cream in order to avoid the stress of their lives.

• Boredom. When people feel unfulfilled or discontented with their jobs or their lives, they might turn to food to suppress those feelings. Food becomes a focus instead of the boredom or the discontentment.

• Fatigue. When people are tired, their body

produces a hormone, ghrelin, which tells them they are hungry. It also suppresses the hormone leptin, which signals to the brain that you are full. Therefore, when you are tired, you feel hungry even if you have just eaten and are physically full.

• Depression. If people are sad, they will often not be interested in getting out of the house or interacting with people. This can sometimes lead to emotional eating, as the food can temporarily numb the pain. However, after eating, the depressed person is still stuck in the same situation.

Again, I would like to emphasize that occasionally rewarding yourself with a treat or celebration of food is not emotional eating. Rather, emotional eating is a cycle that is not occasional at all. Let me explain the differences between emotional hunger and physical hunger.

Emotional hunger is sudden. When you are physically hungry, your body slowly lets you know that you need food. However, emotional hunger hits you all of a sudden. It is urgent and requires instant gratification.

Emotional hunger leads to mechanical eating. If you are eating to satisfy a need that is not physical, you won’t necessarily stop eating when full. Instead, you will mindlessly eat a whole bag of potato chips or a whole pint of ice cream without even realizing it.

Emotional hunger demands salty, sugary, or fatty foods. When you are physically hungry, you will happily eat a bowl of lentil soup or a slice of broccoli quiche. But, when you are emotionally hungry, your brain craves snacks and junk because you need the emotional jolt.

Emotional hunger doesn’t stop when you’re full. Regardless of how full your stomach is, emotional hunger demands more. You keep eating until you are awkwardly stuffed.

Emotional hunger is not located in the stomach. When you are physically hungry, your stomach growls or you feel an emptiness in your belly. With emotional hunger, the hunger is in your head. You simply can’t stop thinking about that treat.

Emotional hunger is accompanied by regret, guilt, or shame. If you are satisfying an

emotional need with a junky snack, you most likely feel bad about eating after you are done. This makes the feelings that propelled you to emotional eating all the stronger, possibly beginning the cycle again.

How can you cope with emotional eating?

Get support. More people than you think struggle with emotional eating. Finding other people who are dealing with the same things you are dealing with can help you both get to the root of the emotion, and find coping strategies to aid you in overcoming emotional eating itself. Join a support group for people wrestling with the issue.

Exercise. Exercise can help you cope with emotional eating in so many ways. First, when you exercise your body produces “feel-good” hormones that fight depression and anxiety. Second, the time that you take to exercise helps you stay away from both the negative emotion that you are feeling and the boredom that you might be experiencing. Lastly, exercise helps you move past the shame and guilt of emotional eating because you are, in essence, breaking the cycle.

Snack healthy. If you prepare snacks in advance, when your hunger strikes (whether emotional or physical), you will be ready with a healthy snack at hand. For instance, prepare a few carrots and chumus or a handful of nuts and raisins in a Ziploc bag. If you have the healthy snacks at hand, you’ll be more likely to reach for those than the bag of potato chips.

Take away temptation. If you see that you can’t stop emotionally eating, then make it more difficult for you to eat that ice cream and potato chips – don’t buy them! If they are not in your house when sudden emotional hunger hits, you won’t be able to eat them.

Beyond emotional eating, it’s important to get to the root of the emotion that is creating the problem. Anxiety and depression affect millions of Americans every year – and treating those is the first step towards solving emotional eating and living a happier, fuller life.

CHAPTER 7

“Bayamim haheim bazman hazeh,” Shloimy finished in his sweet sing-song. His face puckered in earnest concentration as he carefully lit two candles on his menorah.

As the boys joined in an enthusiastic dance while singing Maoz Tzur, I lingered for an extra moment, watching them proudly, before heading back to the kitchen. There was still lots to do. I had made baked zucchini latkes for Chani, which obviously didn’t taste anywhere close to regular fried potato latkes, but was still something different and special for Chanuka. Tonight, we were planning to make the hour-and-a-half drive to Monsey for my in-laws’ family Chanuka party. Based on past experiences, I knew I couldn’t rely on anyone else making food that Chani could have, so I was bringing some food for Chani besides for my contribution to the party. I

quickly served Chani her supper so she would have time to eat before we needed to leave, then turned to packing up some goodies for her: cashew cake, a special brownie made with almond flour and honey, and some cut-up fruit. I hoped it would tide her over the long party and alleviate some of her distress seeing all the delectable but forbidden delicacies that would be there.

Forty-five minutes later, balancing a bunch of pans and bags, we piled into the car and drove to Monsey.

“Hello, hello, welcome, it’s so good to see you, how was the drive?” my sister-in-law Shevy greeted us.

“How are you all doooooing?” my mother-in-law trilled, enveloping each of us in a giant hug. “And how are you feeling, Chani? Doing a little better? You definitely look amazing - you lost so much weight! What’s your secret?”

Uh-oh. My mother-in-law was not known for her tact. I watched Chani squirming in discomfort and thought frantically of a way to change the subject and take the limelight off of Chani.

“Everything is set up stunning! Who took care of the décor?” I blurted out.

Ruchie stared at her with wide eyes. “Is it true that you’re not allowed to have?”

“Chavi did it, didn’t she do an amazing job? But wait – you didn’t even see most of it yet. Come,” she motioned us out of the entranceway and into the dining room.

I watched Zeesy and Chani join all the cousins their age.

“You must taste these donuts, my mother made them and they’re heaven!” my niece Ruchie proclaimed.

“No, thanks,” Chani said diplomatically as a donut was pushed into her hand.

Ruchie stared at her with wide eyes. “Is it true that you’re not allowed to have?”

“Yes,” Chani said.

“But why not? It’s okay to have a little nosh and stuff every once in a while!”

“It makes my stomach hurt,” Chani gave the simple answer I had coached her to tell anyone who asked. Luckily, Zeesy intervened and changed the topic right then.

I didn’t blame kids who asked Chani these types of questions; children were naturally curious, and many times lacked the sensitivity to realize when their questions got too uncomfortable for Chani. Honestly, there were plenty of adults with the same issue. Chani, though, was a self-conscious preteen and found intrusive or even casual questions about her food choices very bothersome. Besides for the ordeal of

attending family Chanuka parties, there was another hurdle to overcome. Chani was nervous about going to her class party.

“You see your friends every day in school, don’t you? And you eat lunch together. Why is this so different?” I asked her.

“It just is. It’s one thing to bring your own lunch every day and say you don’t like the school lunch. It’s another thing to be at a party with tons of yummy food and not eat any of it. Everyone’s gonna think I’m weird! Besides for the fact that I actually can’t eat any of the food, which looks and smells heavenly!”

I understood her angst. She was at an age when it was normal to just want to fit in with everyone else, and a major difference like this was awkward and embarrassing for her.

Even among our immediate family, where Chani felt perfectly comfortable, it was still hard for her. This was the first yom tov since she had started the diet, and seeing all the special yom tov foods that the rest of the family had, which she had to miss out on, was upsetting. Potato latkes and donuts and chocolate coins were all off-limits for her. I had never even realized what a central role food plays in a yom tov. I wondered if each yom tov would be this hard. • TO BE CONTINUED

STUFFED SHELLS

These cheesy, saucy, stuffed shells are the perfect addition to your Chanukah menu. They’re not your typical pasta dish and so full of flavor.

Ingredients:

3/4 of a pack jumbo shells, cooked according to package directions

1 jar marinara sauce, divided

1 zucchini, finely diced

2 portobello mushrooms, finely diced

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 egg

1 cup shredded cheese

2 tsp kosher salt

Black pepper, to taste

1 cup shredded cheese

Parmesan cheese

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. In a large bowl, combine diced zucchini, mushrooms, ricotta cheese, egg, 1 cup shredded cheese, salt and pepper.

3. In a 9x13, pour half the marinara sauce and spread over the pan.

4. Place a spoonful of filling in each shell. Place into pan, open side up. Repeat with remaining filling.

5. Once completed, pour remaining marinara sauce over the stuffed pasta. Top with 1 cup shredded cheese and a generous amount of Parmesan.

6. Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

½ tbsp Italian spice seasoning

2 cups shredded cheese

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Place your cooked pasta in a large pot. Add marinara sauce, heavy cream, 1 ½ cups shredded cheese, American cheese and Italian seasoning to the pot.

2. Over a medium-high heat, melt everything together. Pour the mixture into a 9x13 pan. Top with remaining 2 cups of cheese.

3. Bake for 25 minutes and broil for an additional 5.

ONE POT ORZO

This easy, one pot orzo recipe is a perfect side dish for a Chanukah gathering. It’s a spinoff of risotto, which takes longer to make. Simple seasonings, but packed with flavor, it will enhance your next meal.

Ingredients:

1 package orzo

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 onion, finely diced

1 stick butter

4 cups hot water, with 3 Tbsp consommé dissolved

2 cups red milk

2 tsp kosher salt

Directions:

1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and garlic.

Sauté for 5 minutes.

2. Add the orzo and salt, and stir. Cook for 5 minutes.

3. Add liquids and bring to a boil. Lower flame and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2.THE NUGGET

During his time living in Gerar, Yitzchak re-dug 3 wells that were dug in his father’s days and had been filled with earth by the Pelishtim. He had to toil as he dug, but with enough effort, he revealed the water already there from deep underground. A similar concept applies to the 3 Batei Mikdash. The Jewish people had to work hard to build the 1st and 2nd Batei Hamikdash, but as a result of their effort, Hashem’s presence was revealed there. As for the 3rd Bais Hamikdash, it already exists and is waiting for us on high. We just need to put in a little more work so that it can come down and be revealed.

4.FUN FACT

Yitzchak was born on the 1st day of Pesach and was the first Jewish boy to get a Bris Mila as a baby of 8 days old.

Yitzchak Avinu, the second of the Avos, is most known for the Akeida –being bound on the Mizbeach as a Korban to Hashem. Although he was not offered up as a Korban in actuality, he nevertheless retained the holy status of a Korban and therefore never left Eretz Yisrael, the Holy Land. He and Rivkah, his wife, remained childless for 20 years, but were finally blessed with twins – Yaakov and Eisav.

3.BRINGING IT DOWN

The same idea applies to you too. You have a Neshama, you have intrinsic goodness, which like the water deep underground, already exists. But sometimes the Yetzer Hara hides and covers this goodness. It’s your job to be a well-digger like Yitzchak and reveal the good Middos that you already have hiding within. For example, even if your instinct is to complain, you can dig within and find that piece of your Neshama that feels grateful for what you have.

5.QUESTION TO CONSIDER

Can you identify a positive Middah that you can work on, to reveal within yourself?

Begin by cutting the label off of the water bottle, then cut the water bottle ¼ of the way from the top, making sure to keep it as even as possible.

Poke a hole on each side of your 1oz cup.

On each side of the water bottle cut out a small insert about ½-inch-deep and ¼ of an inch in width.

Make a handle by tying a piece of string (about 5 inches in length) to each side of your cup. Make sure the knots are secure.

Slip the bobbin through the stick and secure it in the middle using two balls of clay. Place it into the inserts on the bottle. Roll up the bobbin using the two ends of the stick and fill your bottle with water about ⅓ of the way.

SCIENCE UNCOVERED

Using the scissors, cut a wooden craft stick to about 6 inches in length, and place it in the insert.

Cut another piece of ribbon, and attach it to the bobbin using a piece of tape.

And there you have it! Your very own miniature well!

The dowel works like a pulley or handle found in real wells, which helps lift water more easily. Turning the dowel, causes the ribbon to wrap or unwrap around the bobbin. The bucket is lowered into and lifted from the water, reducing the effort that would otherwise be needed to retrieve water.
