S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS

“Mrs. Schonfeld, I think my daughter has ODD. She is stubborn and I can’t get her to ever do anything that she doesn’t want to do,” a parent discussed with me.

Later, we talked about the definition of explosive children (or those with Oppositional Defiant Disorder). They are easily frustrated, demanding, and inflexible. When things don’t go their way, they react with violence or rage. Their siblings are afraid of them. Their parents are constantly walking on eggshells, terrified of the next outburst. They have barely any friends. And they can erupt in temper tantrums, kicking, screaming, sudden outbursts, and verbal or physical aggression, usually in response to relatively benign situations.

Explosiveness is not confined to a type or gender. It comes in male and female children, and in all ages, shapes, and sizes.

“Some blow up dozens of times a day, others just a few times a week. Some “lose it” only at home, others only in school, and still others in any location. Some scream when they become frustrated, others become physically or verbally aggressive.”

Dr. Greene, a psychologist who specializes in explosive children, emphasizes “these children have wonderful qualities and tremendous potential. In most ways, their cognitive skills have developed normally.” Yet something is wrong. They can’t properly process frustration or disappointments else. And they need help in trying to fix the problem.

While some explosive children are stubborn, they should not be confused with each other. Stubbornness, or not being easily swayed from an objective, is not necessarily a bad thing. As I later figured out with the mother and daughter,

the daughter was simply stubborn. The first step to harnessing positive characteristics of stubbornness was to understand them.

Upside of Stubbornness

Self-confidence. Children who are stubborn are sure of themselves and the world around them. They know what they want and believe they know how to get it. This self-esteem will only blossom as they grown.

Tenacity. Strong-willed children are not afraid to keep trying until they get what they want. They will persevere until they accomplish their goal. When focused on positive goals, perseverance is an excellent quality.

Problem-solving. When forced to solve problems on their own, stubborn children will pursue multiple avenues to achieve their goal. Later in life, these problemsolving skills will become essential.

STAYING SANE

What can you do?

• Let him be heard. Sometimes, listening makes a difference. If your child feels powerless, he is more likely to put his foot down on inconsequential issues because he feels the need to be in control. Therefore, let him decide some of the small stuff: his winter coat color, his next playdate, his after school activity, or dinner menus.

• Compromise. Life is sometimes doing things that you don’t want to do in order to get desired results. If your son refuses to share his toys with a friend, you might want

to explain by not sharing he might prompt the friend to not want to play in the future

• Lead by example. There is a chance your child’s stubbornness is genetic. Perhaps you also like things to go a certain way and dig in until you accomplish that feat. At times this can be wonderful, but perhaps you do this with your child as well. Do you have a vision of what he should be eating, wearing, and doing? Maybe you can teach your child to compromise through some of your own!

• Start small. Introduce change in a small way. If your child is an extremely picky eater, give him a tiny portion of the unwanted food along with the rest of his dinner. Be sure not to say anything like, “Just try a tiny bite,” because he might be looking for a chance to fight with you.

• Give the illusion of choice. You know what’s best and while it’s important to teach your child about compromise through your own behavior, there are times when you simply cannot compromise. Try to give your child the illusion of choice. Instead of telling your daughter it is time to get out of the bath, ask, “Would you like to drain the bath or should I?” Or, if it’s bedtime and your son wants to stay up, tell him that he can play or read quietly in his room, but cannot be outside of the room.

The methods parents and educators use to help children with ODD or children who are stubborn are different in many ways. It’s important to figure out exactly what is making your child act the way that he or she is acting. With this knowledge, you can better solve the issue and the whole family can live a happier and more productive life.

“You heard the shtick we did today? It was hilarious!” I listened to my sons’ Adar banter with half an ear. They had a point - it was time to start planning for Purim. I needed a mishloach manos that was quick, easy to pull together, presentable, and not too expensive. Then each child needed to be sorted with a costume and mishloach manos. I had long given up on fancy matching themes, but it was still a job.

“Ma, do you think it’s weird for me to give stuff in mishloach manos that I can’t eat myself? Like if I bake something yummy and give it with an iced coffee or something?” Chani asked me. I pondered for a moment. Chani loved baking and had been including a baked good

in her mishloach manos for the past few years. It was a little strange to do it again this year, though, since all her friends knew about her new diet and that she couldn’t eat regular foods like that. But then again, she couldn’t exactly give out a baked good allowed on her diet. Her friends probably wouldn’t even enjoy the taste, and besides, many of the ingredients were more expensive than the typical flour and sugar, and the cost of making something in bulk would be prohibitively high.

“It’s really up to you, Chani,” I responded. “If you’d like to bake something, you can. Just because you can’t have it right now, doesn’t mean your friends can’t enjoy it! But if you don’t want to, we can figure out something else.”

After much deliberation back and forth, Chani finally decided to give out a fruit trifle with strawberry sauce and nut crunch. She wasn’t able to eat every ingredient in it, but still felt more comfortable giving something healthy than food she obviously couldn’t consume herself. It was a bit of a burden on me, as she didn’t have the strength to cut up all the fruit, prepare the sauce and crunch, and package everything, all in one day, so I ended up helping

If it would have been a normal year, I would have just told her that the day before Purim is way to hectic for me to have an extra project on my head, and she should choose something that can be done in advance or by herself. Given her unique situation, I decided to stretch myself and make the time for it.

Purim itself was a very hard day for Chani. First of all, it was a day filled with nosh and all types of yummy foods that Chani couldn’t eat, and it was strewn right in front of her face, wherever she looked. I wasn’t the type who had nosh flying all over the house on a regular day – I mainly offered fruits and vegetables to hungry kids between meals – and there was definitely something about seeing food in front of you that made you want it more. For the rest of my kids, I let go and let them eat way more junk than usual, because it was Purim, but for Chani that wasn’t an option. I caught her drooling over delicious-looking mishloach manos more than once. Normally, if I saw that something was that tempting to my child, I would let them taste at least a small piece. How I wished I could do that for Chani! Moreover, in all the hecticness

of preparing for Purim, I had forgotten to prepare anything different for Chani. It would have been nice to try out a new cake recipe or make something special that she didn’t usually have, so at least she would have something exciting to eat, but instead she just had the same routine foods that she ate each day on repeat.

Worse than the distress of not being able to eat any of the exciting mishloach manos, which pretty much dissipated along with all the cellophane and wrappings later that night, was a hurtful realization that cut to her core and lingered on for the next while. Simply put, Chani had lost many of her friends. She received a total of five mishloach manos: from her three good friends, who stuck with her throughout her ordeal, and from two neighbors. Chani didn’t have the strength to go schlepping around town delivering mishloach manos, so I had encouraged her to stay put and wait for girls to come to her. Purim is a rushed day for most and I didn’t blame anyone for not coming out to Chani. It was painful for her, though, to see that many girls didn’t consider themselves her good friends anymore. • TO BE CONTINUED

“She’s not in your house; she’s standing outside,” Dror clarified. “We opened the door because you didn’t answer when we knocked. Do you have a sugar cube? If you have so much money”—he hadn’t missed the sight of those vouchers either—“then you probably buy sweets all day, right?”

To Naomi’s surprise, Elky stood up, closed the door of the closet, and went to the other room. A moment later, she returned holding a sugar cube in her hand, which she wordlessly handed to Dror.

“Thanks!” he exulted. “You’re so good. Right you have all this money to give to poor people?”

Elky didn’t respond. Her eyes blinked rapidly, and Naomi didn’t know what to say.

“Why should it be your fault?” Naomi asked. Not waiting for more of an invitation, she stepped into the house with the children and closed the door behind her. “Did you hurt him?”

“Not exactly.” Elky sniffed. “But Dr. Annie said that he has an infection, and it’s because his body has been very weak lately. And that is my fault!”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t serve fruit or vegetables to him, or fish, or chicken, and no—”

“What?” Dror’s eyes opened wide. “My mother always tells me to eat my fish, even when I don’t like it! Because it’s healthy! Why don’t you eat healthy things?”

“Do you know how much everything costs?!” Elky ignored Dror, speaking only to Naomi. “And how hard I work for every single voucher?! I add as many extra hours at the office as I can, and at night I do laundry for people who don’t have strength to do it themselves.”

Naomi remembered the ad she’d seen in the dining room. “Is that…uh, service…a popular thing?”

“In any case, I’m not looking for revenge,” he said steadily. “I’m looking for the information, that’s all.

“Yes, very.” She glanced at the closet behind her. “I earned lots of money, and so did Mottel, and we’re saving it so that we should have it for later in life. So we managed with food that is…very simple. And now… the doctor just told me that Wangel might have a medication at home that helps heal this issue, because they once had someone sick with a similar infection. But do you know how much I’ll have to pay them for this medicine? Two hundred marks!”

“It’s good to know that the Wangels are ready to give medication in exchange for our vouchers,” Naomi said slowly. “Just…Elky, I’m sorry for asking, but from what I managed to see, aren’t you able to afford it? I mean, it looks like you have lots of money here, no?”

“Yes, and I will use it to pay for the medicine…” Her eyes reddened again. “But it’s terrible. Two hundred marks!”

The fact that he had kept Binyamin’s nighttime searches in the infirmary a secret, along with Naomi’s stories about Dror Elkovitz, made Binyamin feel that David was trustworthy.

And yet, to go and ask him about this directly…

Binyamin’s steps slowed. The people were chatting, as always, on their way home from work, before they all dispersed to their own homes. Where was David? Could he try to ask him gently now what he knew about the black word

Binyamin was spared the dilemma. A few feet before he turned to the path leading to his house, he saw Yanku in a corner, under one of the trees, talking animatedly to his father. He was red-faced and agitated, and his father—who looked very displeased—kept motioning for him to lower his voice.

Their gazes suddenly met. Elkovitz motioned to him subtly, and Binyamin changed directions and approached the pair. David nodded at him briefly and said, “A secret for a secret, huh?”

Binyamin was thrown off for a moment. “What?”

“You don’t want anyone to know how exactly you used those nights in the infirmary, right? And certainly not that you pretended to be weak, and that your grandmother helped you with the whole plan. And so, I also don’t want anyone to know that my son heard what he was not supposed to hear and did what he was not supposed to do.”

Binyamin sized him up for a moment. “Hey, Mr. Elkovitz,” he whispered calmly, “why start with threats?”

“It’s not a…threat.” The man passed a hand over his forehead.

“And why get my grandmother involved?”

“Again, it’s not a threat, just a simple warning.”

“So relax, because I’m not going to tell anything to anyone. On the contrary, I more or less cleaned up what your son did, so that there won’t be any claim against him or anyone else.”

It looked like the older man was breathing easier. A small smile twitched across his lips. “I told him that if he had to unload his anger in such a reckless, irrational way, it was a miracle that the one who had discovered it was you and not someone else.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Binyamin replied with his own crooked smile. “But something here makes no sense, Mr. Elkovitz.”

“What makes no sense?”

“Your son heard something he wasn’t supposed to hear, okay. But being that it’s about my father, I am supposed to hear it!” He kept his tone low, aware that people were almost certainly still passing on the path behind them.

“I’m sorry,” Elkovitz said, and took a step back. Yanku just stood there, his face lowered. “I cannot speak about this subject, good or bad.”

“But I need to!”

“You don’t need to, and for your good, it’s better for you not to. Certainly not here, and certainly not now.”

Something about those final words gave Binyamin some hope. “So when?” he insisted. “Because if it’s for my good, I’m mature enough to decide myself what is for my benefit and what is not.”

“And what if it’s not only about your good? People’s lives depend on this!”

“You should have told that to your son before he went to write what he wrote. Mr. Elkovitz, please understand me. I…” He clenched his fists without intending to. “I cannot remain with this lack of information. I need to know what really happened to my father.”

“And what then? Will you avenge his death?”

“Oh, so it’s clear to you, then, that it was not a natural death?”

Elkovitz stared at him for a long moment. “This is not the place to speak,” he whispered. Binyamin felt an urge to grab the man’s sleeve, but he knew that such a movement would come across as suspicious to the few people still walking on the path, and would also give Elkovitz the impression that he was dealing with a young, agitated, vengeful teenager.

“In any case, I’m not looking for revenge,” he said steadily. “I’m looking for the information, that’s all. So all we need to do now is figure out the time and place

“Why? We can say we tried, and I decided that you don’t explain things clearly enough for me.” He smiled. “I can also let my father-in-law know that I decided to learn some halachah, and then half a day later, I’ll make it known that he objected so adamantly that I stopped.”

“That won’t be believable. Everyone knows that you do what you want.”

Elkovitz smiled again. “So what do you suggest?”

“That we set up a short chavrusashaft, a real one, let’s say for a month. I’ll come ten minutes earlier than I usually

“Fine.” David turned, and suddenly, a little hand appeared and began tugging at his clothes.

“Papa!” Dror hollered happily. “Mama went to fix the Wangels’ telephone, so my teacher Naomi is watching me and Cherut till you get home. Is this called that you’re coming home? Because you’re talking for so long to my teacher’s brother.”

“But we’ll have to decide where to learn,” Binyamin said, lowering his voice again. “Because if we want to talk about other things, I’m not sure we should do it in shul.”

“We can do it in the fields. It might be very pastoral.”

“Isn’t there a risk that Wangel will see us together?”

The man shook his head from side to side. “They won’t suspect me. They do not fathom that I know something.”

HASSELBACK POTATOES

Yes, these potatoes are definitely living up to their name. They are a hastle to make, but the results are incredible. A crispy exterior and a buttery interior, it’s a perfect elevated side dish.

Ingredients:

10 small Yukon gold potatoes, rinsed well and dried

6 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup olive oil

1 Tbsp parsley flakes

2 tsp kosher salt

1 tsp black pepper

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425°.

2. Very carefully, thinly slice the potatoes, making sure not to cut through it.

3. In a small bowl, combine minced garlic, olive oil, parsley flakes, salt and pepper.

4. Place the sliced potatoes on a lined sheet pan. Pour mixture over each potato, trying to get into the slits.

5. Bake for 45 minutes. Sprinkle with salt while hot.

VEGGIE SKEWERS

This is not your typical vegetables on a skewer. It’s a delicious combination of veggies, with a great sauce to go with it. You can make it simpler and ditch the skewers. Just serve as a regular vegetable side.

Ingredients:

3 sweet potatoes, diced

1 bag cauliflower

1 large red onion, diced

3 8 oz containers button mushrooms

4 Tbsp olive oil

2 tsp kosher salt

¼ tsp turmeric

Dressing Ingredients:

¼ cup tahini

2 Tbsp honey

½ tsp turmeric

Salt, to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425°.

2. In large bowl, combine all ingredients. Place on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and thread veggies onto skewers.

3. Bake for an additional 20 minutes.

4. Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and drizzle over vegetables.

This yellow rice is full of flavor and great to change up the typical rice side. It’s a winner with all rice lovers and adds a pop of color to your plate.

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 small onion, finely diced

1 cup extra-long grain rice

1 ½ cups hot water, with 1 Tbsp chicken consommé dissolved

¼ tsp turmeric

1 tsp table salt

Directions:

1. Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, sauté until onions are soft.

2. Add the remaining ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil.

3. Lower flame and let simmer for 15-20 minutes, until fully cooked.

QI find myself struggling a lot when I host guests for Shabbos. I cook and bake differently when I host and yet find myself pinching and nibbling all weekend long…. I know that dieting is hard work and a mindset shift, but your tips have helped me in the past and I can use some support here….

AHosting guests on Shabbos is an opportunity to create meaningful connections over delicious meals. But when you’re also focused on sticking to a diet or maintaining healthy habits, the abundance of tempting treats and hearty dishes can feel overwhelming. The good news is that with a bit of planning and mindfulness, you can enjoy the joys of hosting while staying true to your health goals. Here are some practical tips to help you find balance:

1) Plan a menu that balances health and indulgence: While traditional Shabbos dishes can be rich and indulgent, there are plenty of ways to incorporate healthier options without compromising on flavor. Consider:

Appetizers: Include vegetable-based dips and nonmayonnaise-based dips, such as tomato dip with no added oil or sugar.

Main Course: Opt for lean proteins like baked salmon, grilled chicken, or turkey instead of fried or heavily sauced dishes.

Sides: Roast vegetables with olive oil and spices, prepare salads with light dressings, or make a quinoa dish instead of kugel.

Desserts: Offer fresh fruit platters, baked apples, or a small selection of lower-sugar treats alongside traditional desserts.

2) Portion control starts in the kitchen: Serve dishes in pre-portioned sizes rather than putting large serving platters on the table. This can help guests (and you!) avoid overeating. For example:

- Slice challah into smaller pieces before serving.

8) Remember the bigger picture: Shabbos is about joy, spirituality, and connection. A slip here or there won’t undo your overall progress. Allow yourself grace, focus on the positive choices you’ve made, and remember that one meal doesn’t define your journey.

2. THE NUGGET

Yehuda HaMaccabee, along with his father and brothers, waged war against the Greeks for one reason: to fight against Hellenism and protect Torah values. He upheld Hashem’s honor and played a major role in the miraculous victory over the Greeks. Yehuda gave all of his energy, and ultimately his life, for this purpose. This earned him and the other Maccabees the title of heroes in the Chanukah story.

4. FUN FACT

He was named Yehuda after the original Yehuda, the son of Yaakov, because of his lion-like strength.

Yehuda, one of five brothers, was the son of Matisyahu the Chashmonai. He was the mightiest of the brothers and led the Maccabees’ revolt against the Greeks. There are varying accounts of this era. According to one opinion, Yehuda was killed early on in the war. Another version recounts that he led the battle to victory, rededicated the Bais Hamikdash, and then served the Jewish people as the Kohen Gadol for 3 years before being killed in another battle.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

We, too, can be heroes who uphold the Torah. While Yehuda died for the Torah, our job is to live for it. We can do this by dedicating our energy and passion to Torah causes. For example, you could host a bake sale in your free time to raise funds for an organization that teaches and spreads Torah.

What is a Torah cause that you can get involved in? How will you help?

SHIELD ART YEHUDA HAMACCABEE

Draw a shield on a piece of paper and write יבכמ inside it. Secure the paper to the styrofoam, and using a sharpie, trace over the shield a few times until the outline bleeds into the square.

Using the back of a paintbrush or the tip of a pencil, gently push the tissue paper into the square. Repeat until the bottom section is completely covered (we used different shades of pink).

Trace over the four letters with the sharpie so they’re especially clear.

Using this same technique, cover the top section of the shield in black.

With the gold acrylic marker, carefully trace the letters over until they are bold and clear. Then mod podge over the entire middle with the small sponge.

SUPPLIES LIST

-4 Colors of Tissue Paper Cut Into 1-inch Squares (we used black, yellow, & different shades of blue and pink)

-6x6 Styrofoam Square

-Cardstock

-Glue

Starting with the middle section of the shield, glue pieces of tissue paper (we used different shades of blue) in order to cover the entire area.

Then, use the same technique to cover the rest of the background in yellow.

To finish off, make a stand by cutting a strip of cardstock,

folding it into a triangle, and using a push pin to secure it to the back of the square. Enjoy!

Kraft it! Chanukah I-SPY Game

INSTRUCTIONS:

All you need to play this game: a dice scissors

Cut out all the cards, and stack it in a pile facing down.

To play:

One player rolls the dice and picks the top card in the pile. That player will have one תוא and one number in front of them. Every player tries to look for that number of the image starting with that תוא. for example: Here is a 2 and a מ. Now who will be the first one to find 2 menorahs?

Whoever finds it first, calls out “I-Spy!” and that player gets to keep the card. When there is a tie, and 2 players find the right images at the same time, you need to place the card back into the pile.
