Recap: Pesach was harder for Chani than Gitty had expected it to be..
EPILOGUE
We began the process of weaning Chani off the medication slowly. She had already been on the SCD diet for over six months and was doing extremely well. She had not had a flare up since starting. One of the main reasons I chose to pursue this diet, despite its difficulties, was to figure out a different solution to her medical issue that did not involve constant medication.
When I brought it up with her doctor, he was scornful and disbelieving.
“Mrs. Feldman, it’s true that diet plays a significant role in Crohn’s disease. However, the only way to effectively control the illness and prevent symptoms long-term is through medication. Diet alone cannot provide the same outcome.”
“I understand, but I did a lot of research and spoke to people first-hand, and I would like to try slowly reducing Chani’s medication. If anything goes wrong, she can go right back to the full dose.”
I held my ground, despite the doctor’s reservations, and we slowly lowered the dose of medication. After two months, we stopped it completely. I held my breath, anticipating setbacks or worse, but Chani continued to thrive, Baruch Hashem. When a few weeks had gone by without any medication, I was ecstatic. I was grateful to the True Healer, Who had helped Chani reach this point of recovery.
Meanwhile, the school year came to a close and summer vacation began. Chani had chosen to stay home in the summer, instead of going to camp, and not just for practical reasons like the logistics of being in camp while on the diet. She was always a creative, free-spirited personality who enjoyed having some stretches of time without any structure. Usually, I encouraged her to form concrete plans for most of the summer, but after a year like this, I felt it would be best for Chani to have a nice break to unwind and relax, free of any pressures. It proved to be a great decision – Chani blossomed in this setting, her petals unfurling like fresh flowers in the spring. She had a leisurely schedule with no set times and no major events planned, but she was never bored. She filled her time both with art projects and activities, which she
Eventually, Chani was declared in remission from Crohn’s disease, Baruch Hashem!
could get lost in for hours, and with her friends, two of whom had stayed home for alternate halves of the summer, so she always had someone around to spend some time with. Besides for that, she was fine with having some downtime and taking things easy.
We continued to add even more foods to Chani’s strict regimen. One major breakthrough was when she began eating spelt flour. Until then, she had not been able to wash or bentch, except for on Pesach, when our rav had said she had to eat a shiur of matzah by the seder despite her dietary restrictions. It’s something that most people take for granted, but seeing Chani’s enthusiasm at being able to fulfill this mitzvah once again deepened my own appreciation for it. Spelt flour also added so many more options of foods to eat! Chani was delighted with the new variety of foods available to her.
After six months of Chani thriving even without medication, her doctor, who had been pushing me the entire time to restart the medication, was forced to admit defeat. Chani was doing incredibly well. Eventually, Chani was declared in remission from Crohn’s disease, Baruch Hashem! Today, Chani is married and
efficiently running her own home. She still follows the diet to some extent, eating healthier than the typical and avoiding store-bought and takeout options, due to the many additives usually involved. However, most of the time it is not a burden on her, but rather a way of life, which she has gotten used to over the years. Most foods can be adapted or recreated in some way to conform with the health guidelines required.
In my humble opinion, Chani is more mature than others due to her experiences. She is able to focus on what’s important in life with the perspective of someone who was faced with a serious chronic illness. I also came out of the experience with new attitudes toward life. I stopped sweating the small issues, trying to concentrate on everything that is going right instead. Acceptance was also a big hurdle along this journey, but once I gave over control to the One Who is really in charge, I was able to just go with the flow, even if it was very different than what I had in mind.
Although I would never wish this disease, or any illness, on anyone, I am grateful for the growth it prompted and the person I became because of it. • THE END

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY
WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 52: David Elkovitz tells Binyamin about the incident that happened with his wife and Binyamin’s father, years earlier. The two of them had been in the Wangels’ garden, when Bernard, who’d been drunk at the time, said something to Binyamin’s father. Binyamin’s father had reacted in disbelief, and Josef Wangel had overheard and become enraged. Mrs. Elkovitz had fled the scene before Wangel could notice her, while Rabbi Schvirtz had been sent to the infirmary—on the grounds that he’d fallen in the garden and hurt his head. The next day he passed away.
All signs point to the fact that he’d been murdered by the Wangels for knowing too much information.
CHAPTER FIFTY THREE
A note Katy handed to Naomi: Dear Naomi,
I hope you won’t tell anyone what you saw and heard in my house.
Elky
Naomi folded the note and stuck it into her pocket, wondering about her dream last night. “Who gave you this note to give to me, Katy?” she asked. “Elky?”
“Yes.”
“And then she went on to the infirmary?”
“No, of course not, she went to her job. I saw her going up the path.” Katy loved providing information.
Naomi hoped Elky’s going to work meant that Mottel’s condition had improved. Where was Babbe this morning? In the infirmary? The kitchen? There was no way to know. Normally, she cooked here in the mornings, and only went to the infirmary in the afternoon. But when there were more seriously ill patients, she was there most of the day.
Naomi decided to kill two birds with one stone: to silence Dror, who was telling everyone all about his visit to the teacher’s house yesterday, and to send him to see if Babbe was around. “Dror,” she called to the boy. “Go look in the kitchen, please, and tell me who came to cook today, okay?”
Elky expected her not to say anything. Was being quiet the responsible thing to do, or did she have to tell something to
someone who could help?
But what if her motivation was not the desire to help Elky, but simply her latent anger toward her? Elky was the one who had gotten the prominent, profitable job, work that provided a real parnassah. Not that she envied that packed shelf—she understood that something abnormal was going on—but the sight of all those vouchers had triggered something inside her.
As if she lacked for another secret to harbor. The issue of the strange paprika in the Wangels’ kitchen was enough for her. At least Aryeh and Binyamin had promised to look into that matter, but the thoughts gave her no respite.
Dror was back in a flash. “Babbe Sarah Liba is there!” he crowed. “With all her friends. You know what she told me? That this morning, they were giving that patient, the husband of the lady where we went yesterday, a new medicine. Right she said that it’s so expensive? I heard that that’s what they said, and I told Babbe Sarah Liba that the man’s wife, your friend, has tons of money in her closet and that she can even buy a hundred bottles of medicine, right?”
Oh, no. Elky could send her a warning note, but it would be much harder for her to silence Dror’s prattling.
“Listen, Dror,” Naomi said quickly. “Do you remember when we left my friend Elky’s house, I told you not to tell anyone what happened there, because big children don’t tell secrets?”
“I didn’t tell!” He looked offended. “I didn’t tell anyone that she was crying away, and that you needed to open the door yourself. I didn’t say that she said they hadn’t eaten healthy food. I just told Babbe Sarah Liba that we don’t have to worry, because Elky has tons of money, and she can pay for the medicine.”
“And what did my grandmother say?” Naomi felt guilty.
“That everything is fine, because Elky already gave the money for the medicine.”
“Oh,” Naomi said, feeling somewhat frustrated. She had no strength to feel guilty, and even less, to deal with accusations from Elky. Not that Elky had the right to blame anyone, because she herself was the one who had spoken yesterday, without taking into account the fact that Dror was there.
The internal arguments with the imaginary Elky were draining for Naomi, and she tried to make sure the children didn’t notice how distracted she was. But when the children in her group went out of the “classroom” area to the tables to eat, and Rivku’s group replaced them, one of the girls asked out loud, “Are you tired, Naomi?”
“A little bit,” she conceded.
“You didn’t sleep at night?”
“Actually, I did.” She smiled, with effort. Yes, she’d slept. And dreamed about Elky sitting on the floor and stuffing rolled-up money into spice canisters. The labels were actually blank, but when she suddenly noticed that Elky was going to stuff a thick envelope into the container, she grabbed it from her hand and disappeared. Elky didn’t speak in the dream, and she, Naomi, wasn’t able to utter a word either, but if she would have been able to, she would have shouted, “That’s my wedding gift from the Wangels! And you took it all for yourself, as payment for the antibiotics for my student, Zuska!”
Naomi shook herself. No, she did not regret the good deed that she’d done, even though she assumed that the money was stuffed somewhere among the other bills in Elky’s closet, and hadn’t been used as payment to anyone else in the office.
“Zuska,” she said, and the ten-year-old raised her head from her sandwich. “Do you know where I can get a hawkbit flower, the kind that you put in your flower album?”
“Sure. My father and I picked it in the forest.”
“When?”
“Around two years ago.”
“Do you remember which season it was in?”
“I think the spring.” Zuska’s forehead creased. “It was after the heavy snow melted—
remember the snow from two years ago? I had a terrible cold, and my parents didn’t let me out of the house to play in the snow; I couldn’t even come to school.”
“I remember,” Naomi said. “You have very caring parents.”
“So when I cried about it, my father promised that as soon as the snow melted, he’d take me for a walk in the forest to see the melting water flowing down on the path, like a stream. And in the area behind the factory, there were tons of little flowers like that.” She smiled. “There were lots of other kinds of flowers, too. So I picked one of every kind, and that’s how I started the album. My father was able to tell me all kinds of things about flowers. My grandfather taught him.”
“So interesting! I saw that you also wrote in your album how you can prepare all kinds of remedies from the leaves of each flower.” Naomi took a seat near her student. Maybe instead of letting her yetzer hara frustrate her about the money Elky had amassed on her account, without any sentiment for their friendship, she’d subdue him and show how to have compassion for Elky. Perhaps by asking Zuska, of all people, for the information that might
Even if he’d taken the expensive medication, surely a natural remedy would help boost his system even
“Right,” Zuska replied. “It sounds like you really like my album.”
“I do! It’s a great thing. I am just trying to think if this is a remedy that can work for my friend Elky Kush’s husband. Did you hear that he’s sick?”
“So what do you think about using your flower as a remedy for him?”
“That one flower isn’t enough.” She glanced around and then whispered, “Don’t tell anyone about all this, because Mr. Sherer doesn’t let my father prepare remedies from plants to give to people. They say he’s not a doctor and not allowed to do these things, because who said the plants are good and not harmful.”
Another secret! This was all she needed now, on her already pounding head. Maybe she should go to the

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QIt is after Chanukah and I can’t say I feel amazing with myself. As much as I tried to be mindful, I feel like I failed myself a little. Do you think I should do more severe dieting this week to get back on track and lose my Chanukah weight?
AYou are not alone in this. Many women are nodding along to your question. It is normal to feel uncomfortable when your digestion is off, and you are well…. uncomfortable. Also, feeling that your skirts are tighter is a bit uncomfortable too. Hashem created us with a natural detoxification system, known as the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system is responsible for clearing out internal waste and toxins. You do not need to put your body through the wringer this week, but you should support your lymphatic system by getting onto track and eating right.
Our lymphatic system absorbs fats from our gut and transports them into our general circulation, bringing white blood cells to and from lymph nodes to help us fight infection. A high intake of processed foods, low levels of nutrients, and a lack of physical activity can contribute to a sluggish lymphatic flow, which can lead to arthritis, headaches, digestive and skin disorders, excess weight, and fatigue.
The heart pumps the blood around our blood vessels, but your lymphatic vessels need your movement, muscle activity, and breathing to really get your system to kick in, so get back into exercise mode even if you took a break! There are lots of ways to improve lymphatic circulation including exercise, lymphatic massage, hot and cold showers, steam, and saunas followed by cold dips, dry brushing, lots of hydration, and deep breathing. What you eat matters greatly as well!
Foods that tend to impair lymphatic function are the common culprits—processed foods, dairy, sugar, sweeteners, and too much salt. Likely foods that you had too much of the past few days. Foods that improve lymphatic function include green leafy vegetables, ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, avocados, garlic, nuts, seaweed, citrus fruits, and cranberries. Basically, foods that your healthy food plan should consist of. Phytochemically-rich herbs can also help—echinacea, astragalus, cilantro, and parsley are lymphatic superstars. Try to incorporate some into your diet.
It is important to note that if you have been eating more than usual this Chanukah, your body will likely feel hungrier over the next few days as it has gotten used to a higher caloric diet at more frequent intervals. Eating your 3 meals and two healthy snacks on time, will give your mind and body what it needs
and after a few days you will recalibrate. In order to stick to your meal plan, make sure that it is sustainable and manageable. Here are some tips to help you out:
Fight your fear of failure- The only person capable of changing your life for the better is you. You are the only person who can go to the gym, change your sleeping habits, or cut sugar out from your diet. It starts with self-doubt. “Maybe I shouldn’t really do this?” we think. “Maybe it’s not a good idea?” We ask ourselves repeatedly if we really should bother lifting weights or eating better. It’s not going to work anyway, is it? You’ve tried it before, and it didn’t work then. Failing would be terrible, so you don’t even try. The key to following through when you’re committed to change is to fight off your fear of failure. Of course, you’re afraid; any sort of change can be frightening. But if you fail to even try, then you’ll be exactly where you’ve always been. You might not fail, but you also won’t grow.
Find a mentor-You don’t have to do this alone. Committing to change is easier when you face it with someone who’s been there. A mentor can also help you with the accountability component. Your mentor can support you and check in on you to see how you are doing. Your mentor can be your spouse, friend, nutritionist/health coach, or anyone you like!
Start small- Once you are clear with what you want to work on, I like to reference Tony Robin’s “SMART goals for your health”. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic goals set within a time frame. Applying the acronym to your efforts will help you break down specific action steps, so you have a clear path to follow. If your goal is to exercise more by walking to work, the SMART way to go about it is to set miniature milestones for yourself. Give yourself a few months to walk to work full-time. Your first step towards that goal will be to research the routes you can take and how long they are. Your next step will be to set one day a week aside to do so. Once you feel comfortable and get into a good routine, then you progress to two days per week and keep building until you reach your goal of reaching work without using your car. SMART goal setting is effective because it prompts you to set hard deadlines that keep you accountable and makes it easy for you to see your progress.

Hamalach Hago'el Osi Malach is numerically equivalent to amen, because for answering amen a person merits shemirah and protection from all bad things, as Yaakov merited when an angel was sent to save him in a time of trouble, as it says "Hamalach hago'el osi mikol ra," and as yirei Hashem merit, as it says (Tehillim 34:8): "Choneh malach Hashem saviv leyerei'av vayechaltzem."
(Aleph Binah, Rav Yaakov Abuchatzeira, the Abir Yaakov, Tehillim ibid)
Dear Yid!
Join the mezakei harabbim!
Come early to shul to hear Birchos Hashachar from other mispallelim and you will merit to have the words (Tehillim 92:11) "Ki malachav yetzaveh lach lishmorcha bechol derechacha" fulfilled.

NEXT WEEK'S SUPPLY LIST CONTEST

Congratulations to the Rabinowitz family for winning the contest!
When Yaakov left for Charan, he found himself on what was to be Har Hamoriah. Before laying down to sleep, he placed 12 stones around his head. If they were meant solely for physical protection, he should have surrounded his entire body with them! Instead he chose to surround only his head, because this reflected the spiritual protection that he would need specifically for his head during the times ahead in Lavan’s house. He resolved to protect his head from any disturbances by immersing his mind solely in matters of Torah and Mitzvos while putting only his hands – his physical effort –into his work.
4. FUN FACT
During the years when Yaakov worked for Lavan, he said the 15 Shir Hamaalos from Tehillim. This gave him the strength to overcome the challenges of being there. Shir means “song,” hinting at the joy Yaakov had, knowing that the hardships were there, only to lead him to greater wealth physically and spiritually.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET
Yaakov Avinu, later named Yisrael, was called Yosheiv Ohalim – “sitter of the tent” – because he spent much time in Torah study. After running away from Eisav, who was angry about losing the birthright, Yaakov spent 14 years studying in the Yeshiva of Shem & Ever. During his time in Lavan’s house, he married and fathered the 12 Shevatim, as well as Dina, who all continued his legacy. This makes him the only one of the Avos who is exclusively the father of the Jewish people, hence the name “Bnei Yisroel.”
3. BRINGING IT DOWN
Like Yaakov, we can protect our heads – our minds – by being careful about the influences we allow in. Whatever we watch and listen to has an effect on the way we think and view life. Therefore, it’s important to be intentional about absorbing material that reflect Torah values.
5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What is an example of something positive that you can choose to fill your mind with?

In each spray bottle pour 1 Tbsp of water and 2 large squeezes of paint. Shake well to incorporate.
Place the rocks around Yaakov’s head.
Spray the orange paint on the canvas, focusing only on the areas where you will want to place the cutouts and rocks. Let canvas dry fully.
Cut out the ladder and the silhouette of Yaakov. Using double sided tape, stick them onto the canvas.
Take off the rocks and the cutouts carefully. Spray the bottom of the painting with the green paint and the top with blue.
With the paintbrush, paint two eyes and a beard on Yaakov’s face, you can also paint a small outline of his head covering.
