Mazel Tov! Actually, I should probably put a question mark instead of the exclamation mark. Like, mazel tov, maybe? For now? I hope?

There are so many question marks swirling around in my brain right now, I can barely think. Well, let’s focus on the things that are certain. I just had a baby. A girl. She is alive. So far.

My baby girl gave us a grace period of two whole days after the cutoff, the date the doctors said that if she’s born before that, they won’t even try to save her. So she’s already fighting against the doctors and their terrible predictions. That’s a good thing, because she’ll need to put up a real fight to turn out okay. The doctors already warned us many times before she was born that she most probably won’t survive.

A few hours later:

As soon as I’m able to, I make my way to the NICU and sink down into a chair next to my baby. I am so excited to see her, but I’m also nervous. The thing is, there’s not really much of her to see. She’s wrapped in plastic to keep her warm and attached to tons of machines. I peer into the incubator she’s lying in, but it is foggy and hard to see through, because they are trying so hard to keep her warm. She has something over her eyes, and tubes protruding from her nose and mouth. The nurse explains that she needs to wear an eye mask to protect her eyes from the blue light therapy she’s getting to take down her bilirubin levels, and she’s attached to a ventilator and a feeding tube, which are hooked up to the wires coming out of her nose and mouth. Her skin is clear and transparent, and I can see all her veins threading throughout her body. On top of all that, she is tiny! She could fit into my palm.

That’s a good thing, because she’ll need to put up a real fight to turn out okay.

Such a small being is not very visible when surrounded by so many layers. It’s scary to see such a tiny, fragile little thing. I can already tell that she’s cute, though.

The nurse smiles at me. “She’s a really tiny one. She weighs only 430 grams. That’s less than a pound! You know, they didn’t even have a ventilator small enough for her here in the hospital. The smallest we have is for a one-pound baby, but she’s less than that. We had to fly over a smaller ventilator by helicopter from another hospital.”

I am amazed. This is a hospital that handles many, many preemies. Mine must be really small.

I wish I could hold her, touch her, stroke her cheek, as if to somehow reassure her, and myself, that everything will be okay. She is so precious, my miniature baby, born alive even though the doctors had adamantly insisted there was almost no chance of it. All the machines surrounding her, trying to keep her alive, get in the way of any sort of touch, though, so that’s out of the question.

I shiver involuntarily, trying not to think about the future.

A few minutes later, the doctors come over to give us an update on her condition.

“I’ll be very honest with you,” the first doctor, a bald older

man, begins. “The chances of her staying alive are extremely low.”

“And even if she does make it, she will have severe issues,” pipes up another doctor, a younger one sporting bushy eyebrows.

The third doctor threw me a pitying glance. “We just want you to be prepared for what lies ahead. Don’t get your hopes up. Even though she is alive now, which we did not expect, she still has a long way to go – if she makes it through.”

Why do the doctors have to be so pessimistic and grim? This is not what I want to hear. I want them to give an encouraging message, to tell me that she will overcome all the hurdles and develop into a normal person. I sneak another peak at my tiny baby and all the apparatuses keeping her alive, and I feel doubts creeping up. My thoughts are in a tug-of-war.

I hope she makes it, that she’ll fight and overcome and defy the doctors’ dire predictions.

What if she doesn’t make it, though? The doctors said so, many times and in many ways.

Should I even dare to hope, when the doctors keep making it clear that a good outcome is almost impossible?

But how can I not? Hope, and tefilla, are the only things I can do right now to help my daughter. • TO BE CONTINUED

Naomi calls Hanter’s spices factory, pretending to be a journalist who wants to know the religion of the workers there. Suri, the secretary, answers that they’re mainly Jewish, including herself, and Naomi is shocked to the core.

CHAPTER FIFTY SIX

Don’t do things hastily.

But sometimes that is better than not doing them at all!

Leo Sherer’s newsletter had a column featuring sayings that he himself wrote. No one knew from which bottomless pit Leo got all of his endless—and sometimes foolish—sayings, but some of them certainly had a source. And Babbe had said regarding this particular one, which had been published a few months earlier, that she was familiar with it in Polish; she’d heard it back when she was a girl in Lodz. She liked the saying and claimed it was wise.

Naomi gripped the phone, after her big declaration, knowing

that this was an opportunity that was unlikely to repeat itself. But what was she going to say to the secretary at Hanter’s?

She claimed that she was Jewish. It sounded like a bad joke, as if someone had been sitting and waiting for her call, and had decided to make fun of her and drag her into a trap.

She wanted to ask Suzy if it was possible that Wangel had arranged for all of the communications from their phone to be directly to an SS command center or something. But Suzy had already disappeared, and Naomi decided to concede that that was a wild, illogical idea. The Wangels needed to call other places aside from Nazi command centers.

“So what? At worst, she’ll see there’s no one to talk to. If it is her, of course. And besides, my Yiddish is pretty good, so maybe I’ll be able to understand what she wants.”

“Good morning.” Dena was polite. Her motherin-law had told her a few days ago that in Vienna, there is a highly developed service ethic. She had to be patient, even with this crazy reporter.

“Good morning,” Naomi said with effort. If she was not mistaken, this was a different voice than the one who’d spoken to her a few minutes earlier. “I wanted to ask about the Jews who work for you.”

“The Jews—who work— for us?”

“Yes. I didn’t speak to you before, right?”

“Can you speak a bit slower?”

“Are you also a secretary at the Hanter Camp?”

“Where?” Dena gaped at Suri.

“At Hanter.” Naomi realized she’d hit a mine of sorts, but wasn’t sure that she knew what it was.

“Yes, sort of.”

“And you are also Jewish?”

“Yes.”

“Do you live on the factory grounds?”

“What does that mean, on the grounds? There’s no place to sleep here.”

“Well, not in the actual building. I meant in the area around it.”

She seemed to be dealing here with a poor survivor who was living the past.

This one’s German was very strange. Wait, was that not Yiddish? Naomi took a deep breath. “I can speak Yiddish if you want.”

“Oh, wonderful!” Dena said. “So I understand that you are Jewish?”

“I didn’t speak to you before, right?” Naomi whispered.

“Right.”

“Yes, we live pretty close by.” Maybe this was a piece of information that she should not be providing to this clearly strange woman? The Yiddish indicated that she was Jewish, although she hadn’t answered the question directly. And she had a strange Yiddish accent, reminiscent a bit of Hungarian, but not exactly. “Although there are also workers who come from far away,” she added quickly, just to be sure.

“And…that’s approved by the authorities?”

“What, that they come from far away?” Maybe this was some official Austrian office, that had to do with income tax or something?

“No, that you work there.”

“Who is ‘you’?”

“The Jews.”

“I see that the subject of Jews in the factory is really bothering you, Ms. …” Dena didn’t know how to say ‘reporter’ in Yiddish.

The other woman took a deep breath. “Because I saw that you wrote on the paprika to be careful about insects.”

“The Wehrmacht,” Naomi whispered hesitantly. “Or the SS.”

“Which Wehrmacht?” Dena took a paper and scribbled something for Suri in big letters: She’s totally confused! She’s asking me about the Wehrmacht and the SS ym”s! Another mine? This time Naomi didn’t know which of her words she had to neutralize, so she just repeated them as they were: “The Wehrmacht or the SS.”

“What, from the Nazis?” Dena tried to suppress a giggle when she saw Suri twirling her finger around her temple. “Yes.”

“They’re long not around!”

“What do you mean, not around?”

But something here was not right. She was sure that in another minute she’d discover that she was an eight-year-old girl again, and Binyamin was telling her one of his mesmerizing, imaginary stories.

“You’re talking about Germany. But where do the Nazis continue to rule?” She swallowed big gulps of air, feeling like she needed huge doses of oxygen to understand what was happening in this conversation.

“The Nazis?”

“Yes.” She leaned her head against the wall behind her. “Like Austria, for example. After all, the Cosmos-Fuhrer was Austrian. As much as he loved Germany, he always spoke with admiration about Austria. Your factory is in Austria, right? In Vienna?”

“That’s right. But I don’t know who it is that you are talking about.”

“The Cosmos-Fuhrer!” Naomi’s fingers were trembling. “So he didn’t live in Germany until last year? He lived in Austria?”

“Who?”

She swallowed. “Hitler.” Then she added carefully, “Yemach shemo.”

“Lived in Germany until last year? He’s long dead, since the end of the war!” Dena wasn’t laughing anymore. She seemed to be dealing here with a poor survivor who was living the past. She wanted to cry when she thought about it. But wait…the voice sounded too young for the woman to be a survivor!

Naomi was also far from laughing. She stared blankly ahead of her, barely processing the rapid knocking coming from her front door. Without saying another word, she pressed the button to hang up and stuck the device under the wooden bowl. Then she leaped from her place and opened the door for Suzy Elkovitz.

“I fixed the phone for him,” Suzy said, sounding panicked. “Don’t talk anymore now, because I’m running to the factory to give it back.”

“Okay,” Naomi whispered, staring at Suzy’s back as she ran from her house. She closed the door, locked it again, and hurried to hide the metal rectangle under her mattress. Without waiting another minute, she left the house and dashed toward the preschool. How many minutes had her “consultation with Dror’s mother” taken? A lot. Too many. Far beyond any reasonable amount of time.

But right now, there were other things that were disturbing her a lot more than that.

What did Hanter’s secretary mean? What kind of trap was someone trying to set for them here?

With Tu B’Shvat around the corner, I decided to use fruit as my guide to these recipes. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a fresh fruit salad, or simple dessert. These recipes are perfect for your upcoming fruit meal.

DEVOIRY GOLDMAN @SPRINKLEDBYVO

CREAM TARTS

This simple, yet delicious, tart has the perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness from the cream and chocolate. The fresh fruit add the right amount of freshness to create the perfect bite.

Ingredients:

12 tart shells, baked according to package directions

3/4-1 cup chocolate chips

8 oz whipped topping, defrosted

1 package vanilla pudding mix

Blueberries, for topping

Mandarins, for topping

Fresh or frozen strawberries, for topping Kiwi, for topping

Fresh mint leaves, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 300°.

2. Place a handful of chocolate chips in each pre baked tart shell. Bake for 5 minutes.

3. Once out of the oven, smooth over with a spoon. Set aside.

4. Combine whipped topping and vanilla pudding mix in a mixing bowl. Whisk until stiff peaks form.

5. Fill each tart with cream. Top with desired fruit.

PEANUT BUTTER DATE SHAKE

This healthy shake is the perfect, refreshing, snack. Add a scoop of protein powder for a complete healthy snack.

Ingredients:

3 cups vanilla almond milk

10 dates, pitted

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup sugar free chocolate chips

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend very well, until combined. Chocolate will remain slightly chunky.

FRUIT SALAD WITH YOGURT DRESSING

This delicious twist on a fruit salad will have everyone asking for more. The halva granola adds crunchiness and brings everything together.

Ingredients for the Salad:

2 cups pineapple, cut into bite sized pieces

1 cup grapes, halved

1 1/2 cups blueberries

2 cups strawberries

3 kiwis, cut into bite sized pieces

11 oz can mandarins

Ingredients for Granola:

2 cups oats

1 cup pecans, chopped

1 cup salted almonds, chopped

1/2 cup chocolate chips

1 cup halva, divided

1/2 cup honey

1 tsp vanilla extract

Ingredients for Dressing:

5 oz plain Greek yogurt

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 Tbsp honey

1 tsp pineapple juice

1 small mint leaves, finely chopped Sprinkle of salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Combine all granola ingredients on a lined baking pan, reserving half the halva for later.

3. Bake for 15-20 minutes, mixing halfway. Bake until golden. Let cool completely.

4. Combine all fruit salad ingredients in a large bowl. Set aside.

5. Combine all dressing ingredients and assemble salad.

Often topped with a luscious glaze or cream cheese frosting, cinnamon buns are the ultimate comfort food, ideal for breakfast, brunch, or a cozy afternoon snack.

INGREDIENTS:

Dough:

4 cups whole milk

• 1 cup oil

• 1 cup sugar

• 2 packets dry yeast

• 9 cups Millstein's high-gluten flour (divided)

• 2 tsp. baking powder

• 1 tsp. baking soda

• 1 tbsp. kosher salt

Filling:

• 1 box dark brown sugar

• 3 tbsp. Millstein's cinnamon

• 2 sticks butter (very soft)

Cream Cheese Frosting:

• 1 cream cheese

• 1 box powdered sugar

• 2 tbsp. milk

• 1 tbsp. vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a large pot, heat the milk, oil, and sugar over medium heat until warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and add the yeast, letting it sit for a few minutes. until foamy and activated. Stir in 8 cups. of flour and mix until a sticky dough forms. Cover and let it rise for 1 hr.

2. After the dough has risen, add the remaining 1 cup. of flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix until smooth, then cover and let it rise for another hour. Once ready, roll the dough into a large rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface, then generously sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.

3. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 1-in. sections. Arrange the slices in a 9-in. round pan or place them individually in baking cups for single-serving buns. Let them rise again for about 20 min.

4. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake for 30 min. or until golden brown. While the buns are baking, mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.

5. Once the buns have cooled slightly, spread the frosting generously over the top. Serve warm and enjoy!

When Yosef became second to the king, part of his job was providing food for the people during the famine. His brothers, having been hit by the famine as well, came to him, not yet knowing it was Yosef, to purchase food. When Yosef finally revealed himself to them, they were shocked and felt ashamed over how they had treated him. Rather than treat them as terribly as they had treated him, Yosef chose to repay his brothers’ bad intentions with kindness and generosity, without a hint of anger or resentment.

4. FUN FACT

Yosef married Osnat, who gave birth to Efraim and Menashe. According to some, she was the daughter of Dina (Yaakov and Leah’s daughter) and was brought down to Mitzrayim by Malach Michoel so she could eventually marry Yosef.

As the oldest son of Rochel, Yosef was loved dearly and favored by his father, Yaakov. Resentful of this, his brothers sold him into slavery in Mitzrayim. After enduring slavery and imporisonment, he interpreted Pharaoh’s perplexing dreams, which led him to become second to the king. He is known as Yosef HaTzadik because of how strongly he stuck to his Yiddishkeit even in the immoral society of Mitzrayim.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

When someone hurts us, while it is human to feel upset, we can choose to treat them with goodness, graciousness and empathy. For example, if a sibling excluded you from a game and the next day you have a bag of treats to share, you can choose to still share with this sibling.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What is another example of treating someone with compassion even if they wronged you?

Paint the entire canvas with black paint. Let it dry.

Once it’s traced, use one or more colors of puff paint to trace the letters.

Draw and cut out the letters, ‘KIND LIKE YOSEF’

After it’s dry, start foiling the inside of each letter one at a time. Paint the inside of each letter with tacky glue using your smaller paintbrush.

Create little hearts all around the canvas with your puff paint by making little dots and dragging a tooth pick through each one to make it a heart. Let the entire canvas dry completely.

SUPPLIES LIST

Once the canvas is dry, set out your letters where you’d like to have them, and use your pencil to trace the letters onto the canvas.

Cover the inside with transfer foil, pressing down to cover the entire area. Let it dry overnight.

Peel off the transfer foil and your art is ready to be enjoyed!
