ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

Leo Sherer is upset about the frum people taking off another day to bake matzah, and especially about the fact that his son-in-law, David, has become one of those people. He tells Eva that if not for Binyamin Shvirtz being frum, he would grab him as a husband for her, since he’s such a special person.

Binyamin comes over to Naomi and Aryeh’s house, and Naomi tells him about her conversations with the Hanter workers. Binyamin, too, is shocked by the revelation that Germany actually lost the war fifty years ago, and that they are not in power anymore. He thinks this is the information that their father overheard, and that’s why the Wangels had him killed.

CHAPTER SIXTY THREE

“Asher ga’alanu v’ga’al es avoseinu mi’Mitzrayim…

Kein Hashem Elokeinu yagienu l’moadim…l’shalom, smeichim b’vinyan irecha…

V’nodeh Lecha shir chadash al ge’ulaseinu v’al pedus nafsheinu”

“Chani’s little house was the largest of the whole extended family. Her family had moved into it when their youngest child was born. So it was self-understood that the family Seder was regularly held there. The closet that served as a wall between the two rooms of the house was pushed aside before Yom Tov, and three medium-sized tables were pushed against one another to

create one long, festive table.

Zeide, seated at the head, raised his Haggadah to show Meir that finally, it was just about time to eat the matzah, and the boy excitedly announced, “Rachtzah!”

“Let’s see when the poritz will come for his regular visit to Moshke,” Binyamin muttered on the left side of Zeide, and stood up. He pushed aside the black curtain that covered the window. “It’s just a shame they didn’t throw a dead monkey in through the window, with a few secrets in its belly.”

“Brrr…” Chani, Naomi, and Rechel all shivered in unison.

“Golden coins!” his younger cousin Meir corrected him. “In the story the monkey had coins in its belly!”

“Coins don’t interest me,” Binyamin said, his eyes fixated on the window.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 62: Eva Sherer tells Elky to apologize to the Wangels for her note that littered their garden.

“Binyamin!” his mother said. “Please close the curtain. I don’t want any trouble.”

“Tonight they are a little more forgiving, usually,” her son replied as he hastily pulled the black fabric into its place.

“I’m just uptight. I don’t want them to come just before Shefoch Chamascha, and we’ll have to change around the order of the Haggadah.”

“Hashem will help, Binyamin,” his uncle, sitting to Zeide’s right, said. “We’ve always managed with them. Hashem will help us this year, too. The main thing is that our wine is no longer on the table.”

“This time, Bernard is here,” Binyamin said. “So I hope we won’t need an open miracle to—”

“Quiet,” Naomi said suddenly, from her position closest to the door. Binyamin wanted to leap toward the window, but the look in his mother’s eyes stopped him in his tracks.

“Let’s sing,” Zeide Nachum said nervously, and the family began to sing Dayeinu once again.

A few moments later, they heard a staccato rapping at the door. Aryeh went over to open the door with a polite smile on his face. He stepped away from the opening and motioned with his hand to the inside of the house.

“Hag same’ah!” Josef Wangel wished them in Hebrew with a dreadful accent, a smile stretching from ear to ear. Bernard stood behind him, and Rechel, peeking over their heads, suppressed a sigh of relief when she saw that Katarina and the two girls had not joined the traditional visit. All she needed was to have to be nice to them now.

“Bruchim haba’im,” Zeide replied, also in Hebrew, and the younger children hurried to bring two more chairs to the table, next to Zeide. Polite handshakes were exchanged among the men.

Wangel settled into his chair and then asked, “So where are you up to now?”

“We’re just about to eat the matzah,” said Yiddel, Chani’s husband.

“Oh! The matzah! You made a big ruckus this year about those, didn’t you?” Wangel sounded disapproving. “I hope that that didn’t destroy their taste.”

“Especially as you didn’t have available blood to mix into the dough,” Bernard commented from his father’s right, reaching for Zeide’s Haggadah. He held it upside down and leafed through it for a few moments, before putting it back in its place.

“So we are getting up to wash our hands,” Zeide instructed, and the room slowly emptied as everyone went to wash. This time, the silence was not only due to the fact that they’d washed their hands; there was something icy in the air.

“Zeide,” Binyamin whispered. He’d hurried to bring the bowl and cup to his grandfather, but found his grandfather walking over to the sink like everyone else.

“Not now, not now,” Zeide whispered. “It’s not a good idea to put on any show of respect for someone else in front of them. Who knows what they will think when they

see that; maybe they will expect someone to bring them water to wash also, or something like that?”

“True, I didn’t think about that.” They were the last two at the sink, and they hastily washed their hands and joined the family again. They had such a limited number of matzos this year—more limited than any other year—and yet they’d have to share them with their unwanted guests. There was no other choice. Bernard hardly touched his piece of matzah. Maybe it was for anti-Semitic reasons, or perhaps he was already full from visits to other homes. His father, in contrast, chewed heartily and praised the crispy taste of the matzah.

“But where is your wine?” he asked after a few bites. “You have a mitzvah to drink five cups, no?”

“Four,” Zeide Nachum corrected politely. “The final cup we pour and leave on the table until the morning meal, and then one of us drinks it.”

He didn’t mention Eliyahu Hanavi; the figure heralding the Geulah was one with too sensitive a connotation to explain at length, and in truth, even briefly.

It wasn’t a real solution.

First of all, Hauptmann Katarina was not here, and he didn’t want to imagine what she would do if she’d discover her husband and son lying dead here in their house. And even if they did find a way somehow to poison her and the other two Nazis, what would happen then?

There were a few other people of rank outside the camp who knew about its existence. If something happened to the Wangels, their people on the outside would figure out right away that something strange was going on in the camp. They’d send forces in, and that would be the end of them.

“They mentioned the ‘conversation with Hanter’!” Naomi almost shouted.

But if…if what Naomi had heard on that phone call was correct…

Binyamin shook his head. The confusion between what was real and what was perhaps not true gave him no peace.

“I don’t drink much, as you recall,” Wangel said in a cautious tone to Zeide, who was filling a cup for him.

“Just half a cup, not more. And not more for Bernard either.”

His son snickered.

“Half a cup? What is that for me, Father?”

“So, if you have four, won’t you honor us with even one?” Wangel chuckled, and then nodded at the sight of the wine bottle that was brought to the table. This wine bottle had been prepared beforehand, in anticipation of this visit.

A wild thought flew into Binyamin’s head: If only they had poisoned this bottle before Yom Tov! And then what?

“For you, it is one conversation too much with some guy Hanter,” his father grumbled, unaware that three pairs of ears in the room perked up at that second.

“I already told you that I didn’t speak to anyone!”

“Just one or two of your roommates,” his father muttered.

“They don’t really know anything!”

the younger man hissed. “Just our phone number.” Binyamin silently chewed on his matzah, hoping that his reddening face was being attributed to his concerted effort to finish his portion in time. Naomi, from her place further down the table, wondered if she’d heard right, and Aryeh was pondering if this was a bait of some type, or if the father and son were arguing in riddles, without knowing anything.

So were these Hanters connected to Wangel and the camp, after all? If so, the Nazis should know about Naomi’s phone calls. Why, though, had they not done anything about it, even though nearly a week had passed?

Zeide didn’t volunteer to settle the argument between Josef and Bernard, and certainly wasn’t going to offer his chinuch advice on errant young adults. He simply proffered the bottle of mevushal wine to Wangel, who poured for his son a third of a cup, not more.

Bernard didn’t argue; he didn’t look pleased but said nothing. He downed the liquid in his cup in one gulp, and remarked something about how they knew how to make pretty good wine here. Then he stood up, pushing his chair back with a squeak, and walked to the door. A moment later he came back and picked up the wine bottle. “It’s okay if I take this with me, right?” he asked.

“Certainly, Herr Lieutenant Bernard,” Zeide Nachum replied, and the long-haired young man walked out.

“Are you going home, Bernard?” his father called after him.

“Yes, yes, calm down, Father!” His son laughed and opened the door wide. “Ah, ah! Finally, some clean air!” His father laughed but stayed seated, waiting for the next round of matzah, and the others in attendance pretended they hadn’t heard a word.

“And to think that all of this is one big deception!” Binyamin whispershouted. He had kept everything stuffed inside him until Motza’ei Yom Tov, and then it all erupted. Binyamin, Naomi, and Aryeh had just emerged from their grandparents’ room after Havdalah, and Binyamin was speaking as if Bernard had left their house that very minute, after taking with him nearly a liter of wine—wine that was the product of a lot of toil and effort. The three of them were standing in the empty kindergarten room, whispering. The rooms of the older people were in the building right near the preschool, and they had no interest in someone coming to check what Nachum and Sarah Liba Einhorn’s grandchildren were doing in the big room.

“Who said that it’s a deception?” Aryeh asked.

“Huh?” Binyamin looked at him. “You heard what the Hanter person said.”

“But the fact that the Wangels know Hanter only means that we can’t believe a single word of that phone call,” Naomi said.

“Who said that they know them?” Binyamin argued. “They mentioned them, fine, but that doesn’t mean they know the specifics about that conversation.”

“They mentioned the ‘conversation with Hanter’!” Naomi almost shouted.

“Maybe that just means they know that such a conversation took place, but that’s it.”

“But I didn’t offer that Hanter woman a word about us. They are not supposed to know that the call took place from our camp.”

“Unless there’s an option to check on the phone line which calls were made from it.” Binyamin shrugged, not noticing that Naomi had paled.

“But we have to find that out from Elkovitz. I think I’ll corner him for a little talk tomorrow. Enough with his evasions—we need to decide what we are going to do, moving forward.”

Recap: Chayala recovers, but doctors want her to go to rehab next. After finally receiving permission to bring her home, she has another procedure..

Chayala is coming home! Finally! I still can’t fully believe it. Baruch Hashem, the procedure to put in her feeding tube went well, and she is now ready to be discharged. Well, almost ready. There is one slight technical issue: her insurance did not approve of one of the medications she needs to take. I try seeing if we can obtain this particular medicine privately, not through insurance, so we can leave already before figuring out the issue with the insurance. But alas, this medication cannot be gotten privately. Chayala stays in the hospital another ten days due to this, until we sort it out and the insurance agrees to cover it. It might seem like if we waited so, so long for her

to come home, what’s the big deal if it’s pushed off another few days? But it is a big deal. We are so close to the end of this long saga, so close to the finish line, and at this point, every extra minute feels like an eternity. To be pushed off an extra ten whole days just because of a technical issue with insurance is pure torture. I remind myself that this is all part of Hashem’s plan, and the moment He decides Chayala will be discharged is the moment it will happen, not a second before or a second after.

Finally, finally, after 202 days in the NICU, right before Chanuka, Chayala is discharged. We leave the hospital one final time, with Chayala right beside me in the car on the way home. I feel like singing and dancing through the streets, I am so heady with exhilaration, excitement, and relief. I am so grateful Hashem has enabled us to reach this point! The pessimistic predictions of the

I am so grateful that we have reached this point: she is alive, home with us, and continuing to develop and thrive.

doctors, that she probably would not survive and for sure would never thrive, are proved wrong. Of course, Chayala still has a long way to go until she reaches the milestones that come easily to other babies her age. But the fact that she is leaving the hospital, well enough to come home with us, weighing a full eleven pounds, ready to start receiving therapy and catching up to her age group, is a pure neis.

Chayala does bring some reminders of the NICU home with her, though. Namely, her oxygen, feeding tube, and a monitor all come home with her. This equipment does not come without its complications.

The feeding tube, for starters, needs to be changed every two weeks, or whenever it is snatched and pulled out by her mischievous hands (which is a lot more often than every two weeks). The feeding tube needs to be inserted through her nostril, down her throat, and into her stomach. While it is inserted, Chayala coughs and coughs. Then, we hold our breath and hope that it went down the right pipe. If it is the right pipe (her esophagus), we use a stethoscope to ensure it ended up in the correct place. If it was mistakenly inserted down the wrong pipe (her trachea), she immediately turns blue, as she cannot breathe, and we quickly pull it out and try again.

Our first Shabbos home, we have a rude awakening – literally. At three in the morning, when we are

fast asleep, a loud beeping sound wakes us. At first I think it is the smoke detector, but then I realize that it is Chayala’s oxygen monitor. After ascertaining that everything is fine, we have a dilemma: are we allowed to turn it off on Shabbos? My husband is not sure, so we suffer through the beeping. In the morning, he clarifies with a Rav exactly what we can and cannot do with regard to Chayala’s various paraphernalia.

A few days after Chayala’s arrival home, we welcome in the joyous Yom Tov of Chanuka. Here, too, Chayala’s gear gets in the way. Her oxygen tank is not allowed to be near fire, as it is dangerous, so Chayala cannot join us while we light the menorah. However, I try not to dwell on the mishaps and annoyances, and instead use this special time to thank Hashem for all the nissim he performed for Chayala. I am so grateful that we have reached this point: she is alive, home with us, and continuing to develop and thrive.

I push away all worries about the future, too. I know there will probably be difficulties up ahead, that it won’t all be smooth sailing even now that Chayala is home, but I focus on the here and now, reveling in the special moments of this Yom Tov, with Chayala home together with us. Whatever hardships are in store for us will be dealt with as they come. •

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QI don't love fruits but I understand that while I am trying to lose weight, it is important for me to have some fruit. I am wondering if the fruit-a-peel or dried fruit leather sticks can be considered a fruit? Are these fruit replacements healthy?

AOne of the main reasons fruits is recommended for weight loss is its fiber content. Fiber slows down digestion, keeps you full for longer, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Whole fruits—especially those with peels like apples, pears, and berries—contain a good amount of fiber that supports satiety and digestive health.

On the other hand, many fruit leathers and dried fruit bars have significantly less fiber. When fruit is processed into these forms, much of the natural fiber is lost. Without fiber, the fruit’s natural sugars can be absorbed more quickly, leading to a spike in blood sugar and a faster return of hunger—something that isn’t helpful when trying to control calorie intake.

Many fruit snacks and dried fruit bars contain added sugars, concentrated fruit purees, or fruit juices, which further increase their sugar content. Even if the sugar comes from fruit itself, concentrated sugar without fiber can behave similarly to refined sugar in the body, leading to energy crashes and potential weight gain.

For example, a small fruit leather strip can have as much sugar as a whole apple, but it lacks the fiber and water content that would make the apple more filling. Some brands also add glucose syrup, honey, or other sweeteners, making these snacks more of a sugary treat than a health food.

If you’re not a fan of eating fresh fruit,

but you still want to include fruit in your diet for its benefits, here are some better options:

1. Frozen fruit – Try frozen berries or mango chunks. They are refreshing, naturally sweet, and still contain fiber.

2. Blended fruit smoothies – Blend fruit with some ice and a bit of protein (such as Greek yogurt or a protein powder) to slow down sugar absorption.

3. Chia pudding with mashed fruit – Chia seeds add fiber, making the natural sugars from fruit more balanced.

4. Fruit with nut butter – A few apple slices with a thin spread of peanut butter can be a more satisfying and balanced snack.

5. Baked apples or pears – Baking fruit brings out its natural sweetness without needing extra sugar. Sprinkle with cinnamon for flavor.

Keep in mind that if you are on weight loss, you have to be careful with the number of fruits you are eating. Extra calories can also creep up in the nut butters or chia seeds, so be very mindful so that you can still meet your deficit respectfully!

Obviously, when mid-travel, or when you are in a pinch, a fruit bar is ok, but relying on a fruit bar daily in place of an actual fruit may not be helpful in the long run.

Although Korach erred in his actions, his intentions were pure. He and his followers deeply desired to be Kohanim Gedolim, striving for an intense closeness with Hashem. Bringing Ketores into the Kodesh HaKadashim as a non-Kohen Gadol was punishable by death, yet their longing was so strong that they were willing to risk their lives. Despite Korach’s mistake, the Parsha bearing his name teaches a valuable lesson. In fact, when Moshiach comes, every Jew will be on the level of a Kohen Gadol.

4.

DID YOU KNOW

Korach’s three sons, Asir, Elkanah, and Aviasaf, initially joined their father’s rebellion, but repented and were spared. They later composed or sang several chapters in the Book of Tehillim.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Korach was a great-grandson of Levi. He was also Moshe and Aharon’s first cousin. He incited a rebellion against Moshe and Aharon over their positions of leadership and convinced hundreds of people to join him. As a result, he, along with Dasan, Aviram, and their families, were miraculously swallowed by the earth.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

It is good to aspire to be as close to Hashem as a Kohen Gadol and to long for a deeper connection than we have now. One way to cultivate this desire is by recognizing that all pleasure and goodness come from Hashem.

5. FUN FACT

Korach’s exact birth year is uncertain. He was born around the time Moshe struck the Mitzri, but there is debate about Moshe’s age at that moment— either 12 or just under 20. This would place Korach’s birth around the year 2380 or 2387/88. The rebellion in the Midbar took place in the second year after the Yidden left Mitzrayim, meaning Korach died in the year 2450.

6. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What makes you feel close to Hashem?

Place the canvas on a piece of parchment paper. Mix the blue and white paint in a cup. Use this to paint the entire canvas, and let it dry.

The tic-tac-toe board should now look like this.

Roll out 9 balls of clay. Each one should be the size of a quarter. Roll each ball in the palm of your hand until there are no cracks in the clay. Flatten each one into a small disk.

Glue a rhinestone onto each inner corner of the board.

Use a ruler and Sharpie to draw two vertical lines, evenly spaced, to create three columns. Then draw two horizontal lines, evenly spaced, to form three rows, creating a grid with nine equal squares for the tic-tac-toe board.

Draw and cut out bell and pomegranate shapes as shown.

Paint 4 pieces red, and 5 pieces gold, ensuring that the top and sides are fiully covered. Use the sharpie to trace bell shapes onto the gold disks, and pomegranate shapes onto the red disks. Place all the pieces on the parchment paper and leave to dry completely.

Draw a label on a piece of paper and tape it onto the bag, making sure to cover the corners. Once all the pieces are dry, store them in the bag.
