The Center has offered a vital service to our community since 1986, and is the only wildlife center within a 75-mile radius of York. They provide wildlife medical services and rehabilitation to an average of 1,600 animals, field over 12,000 telephone calls from callers throughout New England, and present environmental education programming to 7,500 participants annually. Their patients, injured or orphaned because of vehicle collisions, pollution, fishing line, oil spills and other unnatural causes, represent more than 150 species of birds, reptiles and mammals. The goal of the Center is to treat and rehabilitate an injured animal and release it back into the wild. Patients range from Bald Eagles, Barred Owls, Eastern Box Turtles, Opossums, Corn Snakes and the North American Porcupine, to name a few. The Center’s work also includes research and conservation activities. Winter is an especially busy time of year for the Center. As New Englanders we prepare for

CHCC is encouraging other retailers in the community to do the same.” The objective of the Star Store program is to reduce the amount of minors’ exposure to tobacco promotional messaging in retail stores, such as special

price and discount signage, free branded promotional items, and general tobacco company in-store posters, signs and other visible logos. The Star Store program works in combination with NO BUTS!, the Maine CDC program to stop the illegal sale of tobacco to minors. Involvement of youth is a key component of the Star Store program. Youth receive special training, meet with managers, conduct surveys, and then recommend changes in tobacco signage and promotional materials. Marshwood, Noble Rivalry Heats up When Wrestling Teams Meet by Ethan Bukowiec Staff Reporter NORTH BERWICK On Jan. 15, the Marswood High School wrestling team and Noble High School wrestling team will be at the midpoints of their season, working into playoff form and facing off in arguably one of the most heated rivalries in Maine Class A wrestling. The coaches and wrestlers are very well acquainted and at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday night,

both sides will be looking across at very familiar faces. It all starts with Coach Matt Rix of Marshwood and Coach Kip DeVoll of Noble, who have been coaching for the past 30 years and now stand at the helm of their alma maters. “We have both been coaching for about 30 years, so we do have a bit of a past,” noted Rix. “We also share many of the same See RIVALS page 19...

Vivien Leigh, who had appeared in the London theatre production, was brought in for the film version in lieu of Jessica Tandy, who had created the part of Blanche DuBois on Broadway. “Streetcar” holds the distinction of garnering Academy Award wins for actors in three out of the four acting categories. Oscars were won by Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter. Marlon Brando was nominated for his performance as Stanley Kowalski, but did not win the Oscar for Best Actor. Brando’s performance has since been cited as one of the most influential performances in the history of American Cinema and has been widely credited for being one of the first performances to introduce Method acting to Hollywood moviegoers. The film is also noteworthy for being the first film to honor actors in both the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress category. It has since been labeled by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest American movies of all time

“Robert Frost: Fire and Ice” Returns to Clay Hill Farm CAPE NEDDICK The trials and triumphs of the Pulitzer prize winning New England poet, Robert Frost, takes center stage for the latest one-man show in Clay Hill Farm’s theatrical dining series, “Clay Hill Farm Presents.” Following sold-out dinner shows as Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens, local actor, Kirk Simpson, celebrates the life and poetry of Robert Frost in the return of June August’s, “Robert Frost: Fire and Ice.” Flowing from narrative to poetry, this remarkable one man show provides insight into the life of the beloved poet. Bringing Robert Frost to life, Simpson provides experiential dining for Frost fans, theatre fans and anyone curious about the journey of an American poetry legend. Playwright, composer, and lyricist, June August, coauthored “Robert Frost: Fire and Ice” for Arthur Peterson in 1981. The following year the play premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse and in 1984 had a three-month run off-Broadway. Over the next ten years, Peterson toured the show in the U.S. and Europe. Kirk Simpson has over 25 years experience in entertain-

ment. His talents vary from musical theater, dramas, comedies, interactive theatre, murder mysteries, choral singing, historical recreations, renaissance fairs, children’s theatre, voice over and so much more. Simpson, originally from Massachusetts, currently resides in Wells, with his partner Jim Winters and step daughter Rowan. He also works as a freelance graphic designer and artist. “Robert Frost: Fire and Ice” will be performed on Thursday nights, January 16, 23 and 30 at 6 p.m. Sunday matinees are scheduled for January 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. Advance Tickets are $15 for evening performances and $12 for matinees with an a la carte menu.

As an Aspen Institute moderator, Attorney Doleac led dialogues on leadership, ethics and East/West comparative cultures. His study of the 1713 Treaty of Portsmouth grew out

of his interest in law, ethics and diplomacy. He is the founder and President of the Japan-America Society of New Hampshire and founder/moderator of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty Forum that encourages the study of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty of 1905 and its meaning for modern diplomacy. and both France and England agreed to respect the other’s First Nations allies. The Wabanaki questioned how France and England could be talking about control of their ancestral land. A treaty between the English and the Wabanaki was necessary for there to be peace in “the dawnland.” The treaty negotiations in Portsmouth, and the diplomacy employed by the First Nations, were important first steps toward recognition of a New Hampshire governing Council separate from Massachusetts, and for the impact they had on opening the Portsmouth door to development as the commercial and military hub on the frontier. The Treaty brought a short period of peace for the frontier towns of South Berwick and Kittery, and enabled the resettlement of other Maine towns taken by the Wabanaki. The Treaty stands as an example of colonial treaties with the Native Americans when they were still a potent military force. It is a critical resource for understanding what went right and wrong between the settlers and indigenous people in light of the recently adopted UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. Attorney Charles Doleac is a New Hampshire Superior Court Mediator and senior partner with the Portsmouth firm of Boynton, Waldron, Doleac, Woodman and Scott. SOUTH BERWICK Join Charles B. Doleac as he discusses The 1713-14 Treaty negotiations in Portsmouth between the English and the “Eastern Indians” of the Maine coast. The Treaties of 1713-14 have a direct connection with ideas concerning the Rights of Indigenous People that are in the headlines today. Sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society, the program will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The public is invited, and volunteers will serve refreshments. The national rivalries and imperial intentions of the French and English played out against the “First Nations” people who inhabited the northeast North American coast for 10,000 years. After the decimating epidemics of 1616-19, and war with the Iroquois, the First Nations of the four Maine coastal alliances and families had formed a confederacy of the Wabanaki, the “people of the dawnland.” The 1713 Treaty of Utrecht ending Queen Anne’s War in Europe attempted to set the French and English boundaries in the New World. It put the English in charge of the coastal regions that are now Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, and gave France control of the St. Lawrence River Valley around Quebec. The land in between was Wabanaki territory,

lonial diplomacy and the impact of those early-contact treaties on modern First Nations issues of law and sovereignty. More information on the Counting House Museum and all the Old Berwick Historical Society’s programs is available at www.oldberwick.org or by calling 207-384-0000.

The Weekly Sentinel 9

Are You Prepared for the Unexpected? When you’re working to achieve your financial objectives, you will encounter obstacles. Some of these can be anticipated; for example, you won’t be able to invest as much as you want for retirement because you have to pay for your mortgage. Other challenges can’t be easily anticipated, but you can still plan for them — and you should. Obviously, the word “unexpected,” by definition, implies an unlimited number of possibilities. However, at different stages of your life, you may want to watch for some “expected” unexpected developments. For example, during your working years, be prepared for the following: Emergency expenses If you needed a major car or home repair, could you handle it? What about a temporary job loss? These events are costly — especially if you are forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for them. To help guard against these threats, try to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, held in a liquid, low-risk account. Investment risk and market volatility Extreme price swings are unpredictable, and they can affect your investment success. To defend yourself against wild gyrations in the market, build a diversified portfolio containing quality investments. While diversi-

fication, by itself, can’t protect against loss or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the effect of volatility on your portfolio. And here’s one more thing you can do to cope with the ups and downs of investing: Maintain a long-term perspective. By doing so, you won’t be tempted to overreact to short-term downturns. Long-term disability One-third of all people between the ages of 30 and 64 will become disabled at some point, according to the Health Insurance Association of America. Disabilities can be economically devastating. As part of your benefits package, your employer may offer some disability insurance, but you may need to supplement it with private coverage. Premature death None of us can really predict our longevity. If something happens to you, would your family be able to stay in your home? Could your children still attend college? To protect these goals, you need adequate life insurance. As you approach retirement, and during your retirement years, you may want to focus on these challenges: Living longer than expected You probably don’t think that “living longer than expected” is necessarily a bad thing. However, a longer-than-anticipated life span also carries with it the risk of outliving your money. Consequently, you may want to consider investment solutions that can provide you with an income stream that you can’t outlive. Also, you’ll need

to be careful about how much you withdraw each year from your various retirement and investment accounts. Need for long-term care If you had to stay a few years in a nursing home, the cost could mount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. These expenses could jeopardize your financial security, so you’ll need to protect yourself. You could “self-insure,” but as that would be extremely costly, you may want to “transfer the risk” to an insurance company. A financial professional can help explain your choices. Health & Fitness Cold Weather Warning Brings Potential Dangers With dangerously cold temperatures in the forecast, Home Instead Senior Care says now is the time for seniors and their loved ones to brush up on cold weather safety tips. “Winter can be a difficult time, as the harsh conditions especially impact seniors,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead, Inc. “We want to make sure seniors and their loved ones are aware of simple ways they can stay safe and warm throughout the season.” Those over the age of 65 account for nearly half of all hypothermia deaths. As the body ages, the ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature decreases, creating an insensitivity to moderately cold temperatures. Seniors may not realize they are putting themselves at risk until symptoms appear. Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech and drowsiness. If symptoms are present, immediate medical attention is necessary. The leading reason for hypothermia in the elderly is due to poorly heated homes, which is entirely preventable. Follow these simple tips to ensure a warm household. Staying Warm Keep the thermostat at 65 degrees, at least. Consistently check it to make sure your home is sufficiently warm. Even as heating costs rise, your safety should be a priority. Put a carbon monoxide detector near where you sleep. Ensure that there is adequate insulation, and check and clean the fireplace and furnace. Furnace filters should be replaced monthly. Minimize drafts by filling old socks with sand and using them in drafty windowsills and door jams. Weather-strip around windows and doors. Keep doors to unused rooms closed and close curtains at night. Add an extra blanket to the bed and warm the bed in advance with a hot water bottle. Never use an electric blanket – it may be difficult to operate the controls if the temperature needs to be adjusted in the night. Dress in layers of loose fitting clothing. If you go outside, make sure your head is covered. Every year, more than 1.6 million seniors end up in

the emergency room because of a fall. With icy conditions, the chances of falling are even greater.

impact their emotional health. Some signs to watch for with SAD include a loss of energy,

an increased appetite and an enhanced feeling of lethargy and tiredness. If symptoms are present, talk to your medical provider about treatment options.

Preventing Falls Take a couple minutes per day and stretch your limbs in order to loosen muscles. Stay inside and make arrangements for someone to shovel and salt driveways and walkways. Professional caregivers can assist with to-do items, such as bringing in the mail and/ or picking up groceries. Wear shoes or boots with a non-skid sole. Have handrails installed on outside walls for frequently used walkways. If you use a cane or walker, check the rubber tips to make sure they are not worn smooth. Did You Know About Cardiac Arrest? Cardiac arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Though

often mistaken as a heart attack, cardiac arrest is not the same. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest and even lead to death, but

the cause of heart attack and cardiac arrest are different. According to the American Heart Association, heart attacks are caused by a blockage that stops blood from flowing to the heart. Cardiac arrest is caused by an electrical malfunc-

tion of the heart, which suddenly stops working properly. This can be arrhythmia, a condition that occurs when the heart beats irregularly or abnormally. CPR or a defibrillator can reverse cardiac arrest. However, death can occur

in minutes so it’s imperative that action is taken immediately. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by articles from MetroCreative.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that everyone get 30 minutes of heart healthy exercise most days of the week— even during winter—to help prevent heart disease, the nation’s number one killer. According to the American Heart Association, exercising in cooler weather has some distinct advantages over working out in the warmer weather. For one, you don’t have heat and humidity to deal with. In fact, winter’s chill can make you feel awake and invigorated. Not only that, you can work out harder in the cold weather — which means you burn even more calories. Heading outside in the winter is also a great way to take in the sunlight during those shorter winter days. Not only does light dramatically improve many people’s moods, it also helps you get the vitamin D your body needs. The AHA encourages walking as a primary hearthealthy activity since people are more likely to stick with walking than any other exercise. Why walking? It’s efficient. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can improve your circulation, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and help you lose weight. It’s free, simple and convenient. The only thing you need to start is a pair of supportive walking shoes. There’s no equipment required, nothing complicated to learn, and you can do it right where you are. Just step outside. Run errands, walk the dog, take a lunchtime walk, catch up with friends or spend time with your significant other during an evening walk, or bundle up your kids and walk as a family. There are dozens of ways to fit in bursts of walking this season. And it’s customizable. By changing up the time, distance, pace and route, you can create the right walking program for you. There are dozens of ways to get physical activity inside, too—no gym required. Weights (such as a set of five-pound and 10-pound dumbbells) are a great addition, but not absolutely necessary. Adding in an exercise circuit (a cycle of five or six moves, run a few times through) is a great way to stave off boredom and get a lot done in a short

amount of time. You can create your own mini-circuits at home if you don’t belong to a gym.

Ideally, your circuit will include See EXERCISE page 14...

SPORTS ...RIVALS from page 1 coaching philosophies, but you probably wouldn’t know that by watching us.” While the recent success of both wrestling programs has added fuel to the rivalry fire, its embers have been burning since Rix and DeVoll were high school student-athletes. “Oh, it certainly goes back a long way. It really started with football,” DeVoll stated, referencing that the rivalry is between the schools and not just the wrestling programs. “It has

always been a big deal to beat Marshwood in something.” It has certainly been a big deal for anyone to beat the Marshwood Wrestling team in the last few years. The team is the two-time defending Class A champion and returns three state champs in Jackson Howarth, Cody Hughes and Brent Gery. Howarth and Hughes will be looking for the threepeat come Feb. 15. “On paper, they are the team that should be winning,”

SCOREBOARD

Kennebunk Swimming KENNEBUNK -

The Kennebunk High School Rams hosted Greely High School on Jan. 3. Greely took the meet with an overall score of 205 to Kennebunk’s 124. The Greely girls outscored the Kennebunk girls 102-64 and outscored the boys 103-60. Standouts on the Kennebunk side included Meagan Currie, Sarah Lawless, Renee Nichols, Katie Bacall, Leah Dumas and Olivia Hammer-Grant. For the boys, Jack Benoit, Alex Sullivan, Jonathan S. Dunnett and Ryan Plante all had strong per formances.

Marshwood Girl’s Basketball PORTLAND -

The Marshwood Girls’ Basketball team suffered a tough loss in Portland to Deering High School on Jan. 4 by a score of 56-48. While the Hawks went home with a loss, the team is improving. Macy Morrison led the team with 13 points and netted three three-pointers in the contest.

SOUTH BERWICK -

The Lady Hawks of Marshwood earned a 40-36 victory over Sanford High School on Jan. 7. It was a solid victor y for Marshwood, who were led by Emily Robida’s 13 points and Macy Morrison’s 12. J o h n n a K a s m e r, M e g a n McLean and Kat Locke all turned in a strong defensive performance and contributed six rebounds each.

Marswhood/Traip Hockey DOVER, N.H. -

Mar shwood / Traip Hockey hosted Bonny Eagle on Jan. 4 at the Dover Ice Arena and took home a convincing 6-0 victory. As the game wore on, Marshwood/ Traip only improved, scoring one goal in the first period, two goals in the second and three in the third. Joe Cohn led the way for Marshwood/Traip with three goals and one assist. Joe Burns, Troy Stevens and Nick Barrett each had one goal and one assist a piece, while Mitchell had three assists. Tyler Gagnon earned the shutout victory in goal.

OCEANSIDE RUBBISH

said DeVoll. “We certainly have to force some upsets.” In order to force some of those upsets, DeVoll will be looking to a solid core of wrestlers of his own. The 2013-14 Noble team boasts talent in every weight class and a group of young and veteran wrestlers who have led Noble to a strong campaign. Captain Otto Keisker, Joe Langley, Billy Gagner, Hunter Smith, Jake Martell and Josh Grenier have all shown promise this season. Josh Grenier’s older brother, Joe Grenier provides Noble with the best chance to upset the dominating Marshwood Hawks – and he has done so already this season. Previously this season, Marshwood and Noble faced off in tournament play and Joe Grenier unseated Marshwood’s Howarth. The possible rematch has been touted as the match of the night for the Jan. 15 dual meet. Rix is well aware of the potential of the Noble Knights and is expecting a good night of competition. “We match up fairly well with them. It is going to be a very tight dual meet,” Rix said. Matchups could ultimately decide who goes home victorious on Jan. 15, as dual meets tend to be much more of a chess match than tournament play. Each

Sea Dogs to Hold 14th Annual Food Drive PORTLAND The Portland Sea Dogs, in partnership with the Maine Credit Union League, will hold their 14th annual Food Drive which will run from now through Friday, Jan. 31. All the collected food items will be donated to the Good Shepherd Food Bank. As in the past, this year’s team will have a chance to force the other’s hand as they alternate chances to send out the wrestler of their choosing and see how their opponent responds. The contest is a can’t-miss as both teams are rounding into playoff form and reaching their peak as they look towards the Western Class A Regional Championships on Feb. 8. “This is when we start dialing kids in to where they should be and really get ready for the championships,” Coach Rix explained. Two teams hungry to prove themselves, coached by two of the best in the state, fighting for bragging rights in a rivalry that has raged on for quite some time should make for an exciting night. It all starts on Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Noble High School Gymnasium.

food drive will be “Buy One, Bring One, Get One.” For every ticket purchased and every donated food item you bring, you will receive a free Sea Dogs ticket to the same game. For example, if you buy three tickets to the June 20 game and bring in three food items, you will receive three additional complimentary tickets of equal or lesser value to the June 20 game. The offer is good for Box Seats, Reserved, General Admission, and Pavilion seating; subject to availability. Fans may take advantage of this offer by bringing their non-perishable food items to the Hadlock Field Box Office. The Sea Dogs Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each year the Sea Dogs have been able to donate hundreds of food items to the Good Shepherd Food Bank thanks to the generosity of Sea Dogs’ fans. The Sea Dogs open the 2014 season on the road in Reading, Pennsylvania on April 3. The home opener is set for Thursday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m. against the New Britain Rock Cats. Tickets for the 2014 season are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-8799500 or online at www.seadogs. com.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS Calendar of Events Robert’s Maine Grill will be hosting a Community Supper on Jan. 14 from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost of the three-course menu is $14, with a portion of the proceeds going to Safe Haven. We appreciate Robert’s Maine Grill for including Safe Haven Humane Society in their Community Suppers. Please come and dine with us on Tuesday and help Safe Haven save more lives of needy animals in our communities. The January Yard Sale has been postponed until February due to the stormy weather. Stray Found It’s hard to imagine any animal surviving this brutal winter weather, let alone a pregnant kitty, but luckily this black stray found her way to our door very rounded in the belly and hungry for food and comfort. Thanks to the compassion and kindness of a York resident, Richard found this hungry stray wandering his property and he and his wife housed her temporarily until we could accept her. Now in our care, she is going to the vet tomorrow for a health exam and the start of a new healthy regime for her and her potential kittens. If you are missing a black short-haired kitty you should inquire with us to see if this is your kitty. She is friendly, very pretty and dear, and looks ready to give birth soon. This is the time of year that no matter how tight the budget or how cramped we are we must find ways to accommodate emergency winter arrivals. Sadly, cats are outside suffering from frostbite, starvation and injury. Some are mother cats and kittens and some are old cats thrown aside by owners who no longer wanted them.

Each of these dear animals deserve kindness and need our help. Please continue to give your financial support to Safe Haven and keep the Friskees canned food coming. We have many hungry mouths to feed two times a day. Help Wanted We are looking for a person with a truck who would offer their assistance to us two times a month to haul twenty 35-pound pails of litter to our adoption center in Wells. We have been doing this ourselves at the cost of our vehicles and our aching bones. The hard working volunteer who has been doing this for years can no longer do this due to her injury from lifting it. These pails are heavy and have to be moved from the IGA in Wells to our adoption center just around the corner and then brought into our building and moved up a flight of stairs. If you know of some strong teens or if you are able bodied and have a truck, this volunteer task would take perhaps three hours a month, but would save us so much work that is very difficult for our little team. Please call 207-229-8314 if you can help us. Velvet Returned Velvet has returned to Safe Haven. This lovely female who was adopted out last year became lonely in her new home and became unhappy. She needs a person who will offer her the companionship she craves and deserves.. She would be great with other cat-friendly cats and in a happy family environment. Velvet is a beautiful grey tabby who is very laid back, sweet and ready for love. Come and see her.

Animal Welfare Society

KENNEBUNK Fruits and Veggies Wanted The Animal Welfare Society spends an average of $80 to $100 per month on fresh fruits and veggies for our small animals. Remember when you made that strawberry shortcake and cut the tops off? Or the salad with romaine lettuce and didn’t use the outer leaves? What about those yummy organic carrots you couldn’t resist, whatever happened to the greens? They would have made a nice snack for our bunnies, guinea pigs or birds. They are an important part of the daily diet for these animals. Please, fresh fruits and veggies only, and we are not accepting iceberg lettuce. Desi You can tell from the great, big, slobbering tongue hanging out of her mouth that Desi is a happy and energetic gal. Desi is a one-year-old Labrador Mix. She can be a little nervous when meeting new people, particularly men, but with a little love she will come out of her shell. Being so young, Desi still has lots of energy in her. Her favorite activity is playing fetch with tennis balls, but chewing bones and rope toys work in a pinch too. She’s also quite fond of getting regular walks with her people. While Desi might be a little cautious around new people, she is a friendly and social dog at heart. She would be happy to share a new home with some other dogs, dog-savvy cats, rugged children who can handle her play-style, and even chickens and horses. Desi has already started attending obedience classes here at the shelter and would love to continue her studies with her new family. Fiona Meet Fiona, an eight-yearold sweetheart of a cat. chatter a lot or bounce around. Being eight, she’s rather laid back, but she is one of the friendliest and adorable cats around. She loves getting attention and will purr and roll about to ensure it continues. She’s happy to find a comfy spot to curl up in and relax alongside her people. Fiona is the type of cat who will curl up on a sunny widow sill during the day and then take a spot by her people at night. Sparkles Now Sparkles may not sparkle in the literal sense - if any rabbit did that would be mighty strange - but she certainly does when it comes to her personality. Sparkles is an adult Mini Lop Rabbit who can’t wait to find herself a new home. All this darling girl needs to keep her happy is a habitat filled with

grass, treats, hideaways, and toys, as well as regular attention from her people. Calendar of Events Join the AWS Humane Educator and a pet at the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine in Portland on Saturday, Jan. 18, for a program on animal care and handling from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Mobile Adoption Team will bring adoptable dogs to the Planet Dog Company Store on Jan. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. The store is located at 211 Marginal Way in Portland.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ messages like your home phone because then you would not be able to reset your password with the phone number - believe me, I have tried that and it didn’t work. One alternative would be to submit the cell phone number of a relative that you trust, and would be able to work with in the event that you lose access to your email. Elizabeth

Dear Computer lady, I am an elderly senior using both Yahoo and Gmail e-mail. I have used them for years, but now both are requesting that I submit a cell phone number for added security. Is this safe info to submit to them? Also, some of us do not use or have a cell phone, so what can we do? We do not want to lose our e-mail privileges. Thank you so much for your most valuable help and service that many of us do use! Ang

Dear Computer Lady, I am running Windows 7 and my browser is Mozilla Firefox. On my Dell Inspiron 17 laptop, I keep getting a flashing white screen. I have to shut the lid on the laptop, turn my laptop back on, and log in again. This is getting very frustrating. At no specific time does this happen, but I have to shut the lid each time it does happen, start the computer back up and log in again. Do you have any idea what is causing this and can I fix it or do I need to take it to a computer shop to get fixed? The laptop is about four or five-years old.

Dear Ang, Yes, it is safe to submit your cell phone number for email security. In the event that you forget your password or it becomes corrupted, one of the ways you can reset the password is through a text message to your cell phone. If you don’t have a cell phone, however, don’t worry. I don’t believe that either of these providers are making it mandatory to submit a cell phone, and you don’t want to submit a phone number that can’t receive text

Should I be thinking about investing in a new laptop? Thank you in advance! Susie Dear Susie, Without taking a look at your laptop, I can’t tell you exactly what is going on, but I can give you a few possibilities. This definitely sounds like a hardware problem. My best guess is that the laptop is either overheating or the graphics adapter is starting to go or some combination of heat causing the graphics adapter to have problems. Since you are looking at a hardware problem on a laptop, there are two things to consider; is it possible to replace the component that is malfunctioning, and is it going to be cost effective to replace the part. On most laptops, the hard drive and RAM can be easily accessed and replaced, while most other components are either not replaceable, or too costly to replace. I don’t believe that your problems are being caused by either the RAM or the hard drive. If you really want to know for sure, you can take your laptop to a local computer shop like mine, and for a small diagnostic fee they should be able to pinpoint the problem for you. Keep in mind though, that the average computer usually lasts about 5 years, so it might just be time to replace the computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a friend who has Windows 8.

She cannot do anything with it because the machine asks her to sign in with user-id and password. What must she do to enable her to use her computer? So much for user-friendly Windows 8. Terry Dear Terry, When you first set up your computer using Windows 8, you have two options for creating a user account. You can create an account using your Microsoft Live account. The email address is your user name and your Microsoft Live password is the password. Or, you can create a local account with a user name and optional password. I don’t know how your friend’s computer was set up, you would have to ask the person who set it up for her. If that person is not available, have her bring it into a local computer shop like mine. We can help her get the account setup just the way she wants. If you have a Microsoft Live account and you use it to log into your computer, Microsoft will automatically save some of your settings and use those settings when you sign into a different Windows 8 computer with your Microsoft Live account. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I make a website my homepage using Windows 8? Karen Dear Karen, I am going to assume that

you are using Internet Explorer as your browser. Here is how to set any web page as your homepage in Windows 8. 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Go to the web page that you want to set as your home page. 3. Once you are on that web page, click on the small gear in the upper- right corner of the window. 4. Click on “Internet Options” in the drop down menu. 5. In the “Internet Options” dialog box that appears, make sure you are viewing the “General” tab, and click the “Use Current” button in the “Home Page” section. 6. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the window. Now, your new home page is set.
