Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Receives $11.5 Million in Funding WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Angus King (I-ME), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) announced on Jan. 15 that $11.5 million in funding for military construction at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the procurement of two Virginia-class submarines has been included in the Senate Committee on Appropriations’ FY 2014 Omnibus Appropriations Bill as a result of their collective efforts. The provisions are part of bipartisan legislation that was introduced by the Senate and House Appropriations Committees. “These investments in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – particularly during a time of

The meeting will take place at the York Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Using the recently completed Cape Neddick River Watershed Management Plan as a launching point, the firm will recommend specific action items to improve and restore the Cape Neddick River, including applying for a Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) Water Quality Improvement Grant. Residents, concerned citizens, students and all community members are encouraged to attend. “FB Environmental is
helping us implement the action items outlined in the Watershed Plan to clean up our river and beach,” said Stephen H. Burns, community development director for the Town of York. “Public sewer expansions, riverfront buffer enhancements and other critical changes will happen in time. With FB Environmental’s expertise, we are developing a roadmap to get us there.” For almost 20 years, the Cape Neddick River Association (CNRA) has been sounding the alarm about critical water quality issues at the Cape Ned-

Last year, the Senators advocated for funding included in the omnibus appropriations bill and Senators Collins, Shaheen, and Ayotte also included a provision in the fiscal year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act that required the Navy to develop a plan to modernize the infrastructure at our public shipyards. The appropriations bill also provides funding for two Virginia class submarines in FY 2014. The three also worked together to restore funding in the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act to build a second Virginia class submarine in FY 2014.

The $11.5 million in military construction funding will go towards the consolidation of structural shops, which will improve the efficiency of operations at the Shipyard. The project is funded even as the Department of Defense has delayed or cancelled $4.1 billion in military construction projects during the next five budget years. Audience members are invited to compete for an audience participation prize. The quiz, which each year benefits a community facing dire poverty, will benefit the Eben Ezer School in Milot, Haiti. This school has continued to operate and educate hundreds of children in rural Haiti largely because of the efforts of people in South Berwick, Eliot and surrounding communities. “Where in the World is Milot, Haiti,” as it is called, is free and open to the public. Relay For Life of York County Set to Kick-off at WJHS WELLS On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of York County will officially get underway as cancer survivors, caregivers, families, schools, companies, faith-based and civic organizations gather at the Wells Junior High School Cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a kick-off rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year. All attendees are welcome, but not required to bring their favorite dish to the event. A snow date for this event will take place on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a lifechanging event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember
lost loved ones and fight back against the disease. People from all walks of life come together with a shared mission of furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Mark your calendar for the 2014 Relay For Life of York County scheduled for June 21, 2014. Anyone interested in
forming a team, volunteering for the event, joining the planning committee, or just learning more about Relay For Life is encouraged to attend this event or visit the website at www.relayforlife.org/yorkme. Relay for Life of York County raised over $150,000 last year, enabling the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community by supporting vital, cuttingedge cancer research; providing cancer patients with services such as transportation to treatment, free lodging at Hope Lodge, and round-the-clock support at the national cancer information center available at 1-800-227-2345 anytime, day

...LAPOINTE from page 1 on the 17-year-old’s list. He was considering Bates College, where his mother, Tracy LaPointe, and two generations before her attended, while Dartmouth and Yale were his reach schools. It wasn’t until a mother of one of Tracy’s eighth-grade students proposed, “Why not just go for it?” when Darren decided to
go all in. He visited Harvard in August 2013 and never looked in a different direction. “Once I realized that I had a shot at getting in, I figured, ‘Why not?’ and just went for it,” Darren explained. “I just thought that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.” Darren applied for restrictive early action to Harvard on Oct. 15, 2013, and after two long

months of anxiously waiting, he is now looking towards a bright future at the school of his dreams. When retelling how he felt upon his acceptance, Darren recalled, “I just threw a fist in the air and it felt so good. It was ecstasy.” What drew Darren to Harvard was the opportunity to receive a broad education. He had always considered himself a math/science type, but his love of English and the humanities developed during his sophomore year. “Mr. [Luke] Edgar’s class really opened me up to looking at books, literature and language in a new way,” Darren pointed out. His passion for the written word has continued to grow thanks to Mr. Jeff Rosinski’s senior AP Literature course. Darren will not have to worry about being pigeon-holed to one field of study as he takes the next step in his education, for “Harvard seeks to identify and to remove restraints on students’ full participation, so that individuals
may explore their capabilities and interests and may develop their full intellectual and human potential,” according to the university’s mission statement. The university’s financial aid packages, extracurricular activities and the chance to wrestle at a Division I level also added to Darren’s desire to attend the Cambridge, Mass. campus next fall. Darren has been wrestling since the fifth grade and has worked to become a crucial member on a Marshwood Wrestling team that has enjoyed backto-back state championships. While he hasn’t been recruited, Harvard’s squad is currently in need of a 125-pound wrestler and Darren fits the bill. He credits what he has learned on the mat to his success in his pursuit of higher education. Tracy, who has been teaching English in the Marshwood school district for 28 years, agrees with that sentiment and is thankful for the support and impact the school community has had on

her son. “My feeling is that we have all brought him up,” Tracy noted. “I knew no matter what, he was always going get the skills he needed because the teachers are doing their jobs.” It was always important to Tracy that her children be able to succeed on their own. She never wanted the fact that she was a school teacher at Marshwood to impact how they developed. Tracy could not be more grateful for how her fellow colleagues have shaped Darren and her 15-year-old son, Connor. In looking ahead to Darren’s next four years at Harvard, Tracy and her husband, Scott, are fully confident that their son will succeed living on his own. He is used to it by now. Ever since he was 11-years old, Darren has been traveling across the country through People to People. The program has allowed Darren to travel to Australia, China and India independently for up to 19 days at a time. “To watch an 11-year-old go away and have no problems whatsoever, I should know that he is going to be fine,” Tracy said. Scott simply believes in his son and his natural abilities. “I knew that he was going to be able to do whatever he wants because it seems like everything comes so easy for him,” Scott said with certainty. Things may come easy to Darren, but in order to become the first student from Marshwood High School to attend Harvard, he has put forth the extra effort in all aspects of his life. He has dedicated himself to his studies and diversifying himself as a student. He has sacrificed and persevered to excel as a wrestler. Most importantly, he has never lost sight of the teachers, friends and family who have helped him get to where he is today. In a mere eight months, Darren will take his first class at Harvard University, but for now he just wants to enjoy the last five months of his Marshwood High School career.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Short-term vs. Long-term Investments: What’s the Difference?
At various times, many people may feel frustrated by the performance of their investments. For example, they expect growth, and they don’t get it — or they think the value of their investment won’t fluctuate much, but it does. However, some of this frustration might be alleviated if investors were more familiar with the nature of their investment vehicles. Specifically, it’s important to keep in mind the difference between long-term and short-term investments. What defines long-term and short-term investments? Long-term investments are those vehicles that you intend to hold for more than one year — in fact, you generally intend to hold them for several years. On the other hand, you usually hold short-term investments for one year or less. You can find several key distinctions between shortterm and long-term vehicles. Here are a few to consider: They carry different expectations. When you purchase an investment that you intend to keep for many years, you may be expecting the investment to increase in value so that
you can eventually sell it for a profit. In addition, you may be looking for the investment to provide income. When you purchase a short-term vehicle, you are generally not expecting much in the way of a return or an increase in value. Typically, you purchase short-term investments for the relatively greater degree of principal protection they are designed to provide. They meet different needs at different times of life. You will have different investment needs at different times of your life. When you’re young, and just starting out in your career, you may require a mix of long and short-term in-
vestments. You might need the short-term ones to help pay for a down payment on a home, while the long-term ones could be used to help build resources for your retirement. But later in life, when you’re either closing in on retirement, or you’re already retired, you may have much less need for long-term vehicles, with a corresponding increase in your need for shortterm investments. They can satisfy different goals. If you purchase investments that you intend to hold for the long term, you probably have a long-term goal in mind — such as building resources
to help pay for a comfortable retirement or leaving a legacy. On the other hand, a short-term investment would be more appropriate if you know that you will need a certain amount of money at a certain time — perhaps to purchase a car or to fund a vacation. They carry different risks. All investments carry some type of risk. One of the biggest risks associated with long-term investments is volatility, the fluctuations in the financial markets that can cause investments to lose value. On the other hand, short-term investment vehicles may be subject to purchasing power risk
— the risk that your investment’s return will not keep up with inflation. As an investor, you’ll probably need a mix of longterm and short-term vehicles. By knowing the differences between these two categories, you should have a good idea of what to expect from your investments — and this knowledge can help you make those choices that are right for you. Thinking of Purchasing a Used Car? Buying a pre-owned or used car makes tremendous sense in cutting the cost of vehicle ownership if you take certain precautions before the purchase. Unfortunately, all too often, people makes their “new” purchase and then they check it out - only to learn that they should have reversed the sequence of events. Now they own problems that they could have avoided completely or used the findings in their purchase negotiation. What about CARFAX? They have some very creative television ads that will encourage you to buy their service. CARFAX wants service facilities to share their clients’ service records. Many businesses choose not to participate

because they feel it violates their clients’ privacy. Also, many accidents are not reported to insurance companies, therefore, CARFAX may not know the real history. In other words, CARFAX can only report the information to which it has access. Because of the “holes” in the CARFAX model, it is very wise to have a pre-purchase inspection performed to supplement the CARFAX report. It takes about 90 minutes to thoroughly inspect the mechanical, structural, steering and suspension components, and look for previous collision damage. It is a valuable service when think- cause they have no stake in the ing of investing in your next set long term life of the vehicle. Remember the adage “no one ever of wheels. Boost Energy Efficiency in Your Home and Live Green It’s now easier than ever for homeowners to transform their homes into models of green living thanks to the growing availability of affordable, energy-smart building products and materials. From replacing incandescent light bulbs to reviewing the energy rating on new appliances, more homeowners are making informed decisions on how to cut energy consumption and boost efficiency. Homeowners who are serious about boosting their home’s energy efficiency should consider working with a certified Home Energy Rater. These professionals conduct a series of tests to assess a home’s energy efficiency to provide an overall efficiency rating in much the same way that appliances are rated. Armed with this information, homeowners can make home improvement decisions that further boost their home’s energy efficiency. According to the U.S Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home. While using smart thermostats can help correct daily energy use, homeowners should consider how thoroughly sealed their home truly is. For instance, the amount of air escaping from the home via cracks and gaps within the building envelope can have a significant impact on the overall efficiency of the heating and cooling system. Why does this matter?
Escaping air means the furnace or air-conditioner must work overtime to compensate and maintain a comfortable living temperature. As a result, energy consumption remains high, monthly bills continue to climb and any efficiency achieved through other methods is done in vain. Understanding the factors that contributes to air leakage is essential for improving efficiency and lowering monthly bills. One of the key areas to consider is the home’s insulation. While some homeowners may think simply layering more insulation on top of existing insulation may do the trick, typically these traditional insulation types are unable to provide a thorough air seal or promote better heating and cooling efficiency. In fact, all the small gaps left behind by regular insulation materials like fiberglass can add up quickly. One effective consideration is replacing traditional insulation with a high-performance spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation both air-seals and insulates to stop air leakage from occurring, allowing homeowners to reduce energy consumption, effectively control their indoor environments and live greener. When installed, spray foam insulation expands to completely seal a home’s walls, floors and ceilings to prevent air leakage. Insulation experts from Icynene note that quality spray foam insulation can noticeably reduce heating and cooling costs, in some cases by up to 50 percent. More information on

and has performed at numerous percussion festivals and community events. The group is deeply dedicated to the education and cultivation of peace and sharing among cultures through the power of music. Inanna takes their name from an ancient Sumerian goddess, who held reign more than 4,000 years ago during a period when it is believed that drummers and dancers were predominantly women. The ensemble chose the name of this ancient goddess to express their ties with earlier traditions. The evening performance is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at www. brownpapertickets.com. Health & Fitness The Basics of Boosting Metabolism Men and women looking to shed a few pounds and keep those pounds off often look for ways to boost their metabolisms. Some may not know just what metabolism means, and though it is a complicated combination of processes, metabolism is perhaps best explained as the sum of those processes, each of which is instituted to convert food into energy. So it’s no surprise that so many people, especially men and women whose metabolisms have begun to slow down, want to boost their metabolism and turn that food into energy more quickly. Though metabolism is a collection of complicated processes, boosting metabolism can be rather easy. The following are a handful of ways to do so, which can help men and women reach their fitness goals. Eat the right foods and eat more often. Many adults have been turned on to the concept of grazing, an approach to diet wherein adherents eat small portions of food every two to three hours instead of the more traditional three square meals per day. But grazing is only effective when men and women eat the right foods. Each small meal should still have nutritional value just as if it were a large meal. When eating smaller meals, include healthy sources of protein and fiber. Vegetables tend to be especially beneficial because they are high in fiber, a non-digestible carbohydrate
that is hard for the body to break down. As the body works hard to break down fiber, it’s burning energy and boosting its metabolism along the way. Fish is another potentially beneficial food for those looking to boost their metabolisms, as studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils increase the levels of fat-burning enzymes in the body while decreasing the body’s level of fat-storage enzymes. Eating more often benefits the body because doing so stimulates metabolism, reassuring the body that food will be coming on a regular basis. When meals are skipped or there are long intervals between meals, the body reacts as if it might run out of food and begins to store fat.
tabolisms. For example, green tea has its proponents who feel it can have a significant impact on metabolism thanks to EGCG, a compound found in the tea that has been proven to elevate metabolism. However, the impact of EGCG on boosting metabolism is negligible, and therefore won’t make much of an impact on a person’s weight. The same can be said about capsaicin, an active component found in chili peppers that some feel boosts metabolism enough to promote weight loss. Though capsaicin can boost metabolism slightly, studies have shown that influence is not significant enough to affect a person’s

Add some lean muscle. Lean muscle can boost metabolism, so a workout dominated by cardiovascular exercise won’t have as positive an impact on metabolism as one that includes a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. When muscles are worked hard, the body needs to work hard to recover and rebuild those muscles, burning more calories and boosting metabolism as a result. Don’t believe everything you read or hear. Suggestions are abound as to ways to significantly improve metabolism. Unfortunately, many of these suggestions boost metabolism but not enough to help people lose weight, which is the ultimate goal of many people looking to boost their me-

...METABOLISM from page 11 is too comfortable, it burns less energy to stay warm in the winter or comfortably cool in the summer. A study
from the National Institute of Health Clinical Center found that people who slept in a room kept at 66 degrees Fahrenheit burned seven percent more calories than those who slept in a
room at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Sleeping in a cooler room may just be the easiest way for men and women to boost their metabolisms. Boosting metabolism and

Health & Fitness Heart Attack Proof: How to Give Yourself a Cardiac Makeover It’s not cancer, accidents or even old age – the leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and stroke. The good news is that this killer is highly preventable and controllable. By taking the right steps and working closely with your doctor, you can help prevent heart attack and stroke at any age. Bestselling author Dr. Michael Ozner, a board-certified cardiologist, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association, and medical director of Wellness and Prevention at Baptist Health South Florida, knows when it comes to your heart, a proactive approach is best. Here are some of his top tips to help you start your own cardiac makeover: Eat the Mediterranean way. A Mediterranean diet is ideal for heart health because it mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish and poul-
try. It is low in saturated fat and contains more of the healthy fats that support heart function. When embracing a hearthealthy diet, it’s also best to limit sugar, salt, red meat, trans fats or processed foods. Drink to heart health If you drink alcohol, the key is to do so in moderation. Consume no more than one drink for a woman and two drinks for a man in a 24-hour period. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5
ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of spirits. Catch heart health with fish oil. Fish oil supplements are clinically proven to support cardiovascular health. Since the typical American doesn’t consume enough omega-3s from healthy food sources, a quality fish oil is the best option to ensure adequate intake. Remember, not all fish oil supplements are created equal -
when shopping, get a certificate of analysis from the company and compare results for purity, freshness and potency. For example, Nordic Naturals provides this information to customers, which includes guidelines from leading organizations on toxins, oxidation and heavy metals. Know your biomarkers. Comprehensive blood tests by a health care professional
reveal important biomarkers that can help you understand your heart health and where to make improvements. Biomarkers go beyond standard cholesterol tests to reveal hidden risks. When it comes to heart health, knowledge is power, and when you and your doctor know your biomarkers, you See MAKEOVER page 15...

Health & Fitness Weight Training Benefits Children A review published in a 2010 issue of the medical journal, Pediatrics, found that children benefited from weight training. In the review, researchers from the Institute of Training Science and Sports Informatics in Cologne, Germany, analyzed studies that focused on children and weightlifting. The review looked at
...MAKEOVER from page 13 both can come up with an intervention and therapy plan to correct any abnormalities. Step up for heart health. Make it your goal to walk 10,000 steps each day - the equivalent of 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise. Track your progress with a pedometer. It can become addictive to check that little device and see the number increase. If you’re not very physically active, start slow and work your way up. Start by walking at least 30 minutes per day and boost your steps by walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, and walking in place while watching TV. Melt away stress. Stress is an enemy of heart health, but we all know that it’s difficult to avoid stress completely. That’s why it’s important to understand your personal stress triggers and learn new ways to manage them. Retrain your mind to see daily stressors for what they are and learn to calm yourself down in healthy ways. Practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, visualization, exercise and music. Breathing calmly is one of the simplest yet best - ways to reduce stress and stay in control. Don’t forget to get adequate sleep each night too. Heart health should be a priority for every American at any age, and with a few important tips from experts like Dr. Ozner, giving yourself a cardiac makeover has never been easier. For further information, read Dr. Ozner’s bestselling book “Heart Attack Proof: A Six Week Cardiac Makeover For a Lifetime of Optimal Health.” This article was provided by Brandpoint Content. studies going as far back as 60 years, finding that children and adolescents who lifted weights grew stronger. Those who participated in strength training twice per week gained more strength than those who participated just once per week. These findings contradict a longstanding belief that children do not actually get stronger. But while children and adolescents may be getting stronger, researchers found that they do not add as much bulk or obvious
muscle mass as adults. Instead, researchers feel the strength changes in children and adolescents stem more from neurological changes that make their nervous systems and muscles interact more efficiently. Though parents have long worried that strength training will stunt their children’s growth, researchers now feel that properly supervised strength training will not stunt growth or lead to growthplate injuries and will perhaps even reduce their risk of injury as
opposed to increasing that risk. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Weekly

Another Chance Animal Rescue
NORTH BERWICK D.C.’s story is all too common. He and another house cat were left behind when his caretakers moved, leaving both pets to fend for themselves on the harsh street of Dover, N.H. The neighbors knew that the cats were left and felt that this was an unnecessary, unkind thing to do, so they tried to get animal control to pick up the cats. After a couple of weeks in the cold, one of the neighbors put a call into a volunteer for ACAR to see if we could help two sweet, gentle young cats
that were freezing and starving to death. D.C. (Dover Charlie) is a long haired coal-black twoyear-old who is just as sweet and loving as a cat can be. D.C still
loves people and will do very well with children of all ages, as well as all other members of the family. He is use to living with other cats, so will do well with residence cats and respectful dogs. D.C. would like not to be on the streets again so he is looking for an indoor only life style where he does not have to relive the nightmare of hunger and freezing cold. D.C. is neutered, his vaccinations are current and he has passed his wellness exam, so he is ready for a new, loving family. D.C. will be at the North Berwick adoption center for interested families.

Ahri, our pregnant kitty in foster care, has been reported to have all of the sudden “popped out” in size and is licking herself and searching for a nesting spot. Foster volunteer, Kathy, is watching her carefully and anticipating a birthing soon. Volunteers Needed To keep our thrift shop organized and clean we need an added team of volunteers who will work with the manager to revamp the shop seasonally, help keep it clean and all items priced. We need people on call if a scheduled volunteer can’t come in since we have to close shop if someone calls out. Volunteering for Safe Haven will give you a 25 percent discount on any purchases you make at our shop and you’ll have a fun time creating a shopping environment for our worthy cause. SPORTS Berwick Academy Coach Earns 300th Win by Larry Favinger Contributing Writer SOUTH BERWICK – Reaching a milestone in coaching is always something to remember, but it is especially significant when that achievement is realized against a particular opponent. So it was for Brian Sanborn, the varsity basketball coach at Berwick Academy, when his 300th career coaching victory came over Beaver Country Day School of Chestnut Hill, Mass., a particularly tough opponent, and an opponent to which the Bulldogs have finished second to in the Eastern Independent League the last two seasons. The Bulldogs, currently 11-1 this season, posted the victory in December in their fifth outing of the 2013-14 season, and it was, Sanborn said in a telephone interview early this week, especially nice. Coach Sanborn is in his 17th season as girls basketball coach at Berwick, where he is also a chemistry teacher, and has earned respect in both roles. “He does a fabulous job,” Athletic Director Rob Quinn said. “He cares about the kids. “And he’s a tremendous teacher as well,” Quinn continued. “He’s passionate about basketball and he’s passionate about teaching.”
Prior to joining the staff at Berwick, Sanborn taught at Traip Academy in Kittery for 14 years and coached girls’ basketball for 11. Between Traip and Berwick he spent a year at Alton Bay in New Hampshire. As to reaching the 300 win mark, Sanborn noted, “It probably means I’ve been at this a long time.” He noted there are a lot of losses over that period of time as well. As to a game he particularly remembers, there was one while he was at Traip. The Rangers advanced to the post-season tournament and earned their way into the regional final against undefeated Mt. Abrams at the Augusta Civic Center. Building a lead and holding it until halftime, the Rangers were caught and passed by the tournament’s top seed in a red hot third quarter. Not to be deterred, Traip rallied in the final eight minutes and actually had a two-point lead and the ball in the final minute, only to lose on a threepoint shot at the buzzer, 60-59. Sanborn said he’s had many people tell him that was, “one of the best tournament games ever.” While at Alton his late wife became gravely ill and, as he
Red Sox World Series Trophies Coming to Hadlock Field PORTLAND The Boston Red Sox will be bringing the 2004, 2007, and 2013 World Series trophies to Hadlock Field on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Additionally, the Red Sox will host a brief rally at Hadlock Field on Saturday to celebrate the 2013 championship. The event is free and open to the public. The Red Sox rally will take place on the front plaza at Hadlock Field at 11 a.m. Taking part in the rally will be Senator George Mitchell along with Dr. Charles Steinberg, Red Sox Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor to the President/
CEO, and Dick Flavin, Fenway Park public address announcer and Poet Laureate of Red Sox Nation. Slugger the Sea Dog and Wally the Green Monster will also be in attendance. Following the rally, the trophies will be available for viewing in the Portland Room at Hadlock Field until 2 p.m. The Sea Dogs have served as the Red Sox Double-A affiliate since 2003. The 2013 Red Sox World Series roster featured 17 players that played for the Sea Dogs including two players that started the season in Portland; Brandon Workman and Xander Bogaerts.
looked to spend more time with her and his two daughters, he heard of and landed a position at Berwick. He took the position for a year to give it a try, he said, and it kind of “snow balled from there.” He said Berwick Academy “took a chance on me” with all he and his family were going through and “Berwick deserves a lot of credit.” There are differences, he said, in coaching at the public school and a school like Berwick
Academy. At Traip, he said he felt the program “for the town” because you watched the kids grow up and graduate, but at Berwick the players “come from a wide area.” It is much harder, he explained, to get the team together on an off day for a practice because they are not all local. “You’re asking a lot,” Sanborn said. Sanborn is from Wales, Maine, and attended Monmouth Academy for two years before Oak Hill High School was opened there and he spent
his junior and senior year there. Sanborn was a member of a state championship baseball team at Oak Hill and pitcheda no hitter against Leavitt in the title game. From there he attended and graduated from Colby and went to Traip to begin his career as a coach and teacher in the fall of 1982. “I was more prepared to coach to start with, then I was ready to teach,” he said. “The coaching end of it was easy,” Now, according to his peers, he is a winner at both.

Less than one year ago, the Berwick girls played Proctor in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC tournament and lost by 38 points. This year, with both teams returning virtually intact, the result was different, as Berwick won a tight game 44-41 on Jan. 17. The Lady Bulldogs have won six straight, and are 11-1 on the season. Berwick led 24-22 at the half, and found themselves down 41-40 with less than 30 seconds to play. Torie St. Pierre scored off an
inbounds play to snatch the lead for Berwick, and later hit two key free throws to finish the scoring. Overall, St. Pierre led the way for Berwick with 16 points and four assists. M a g gi e D u Ch e n e h a d 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Becca Siegel scored nine points on three three-pointers, all in the second half.
Marshwood High Girls’ Basketball
The loss was not due to a lack of effort, as the Hawks turned in a strong performance, led by Lydia St. Pierre, who poured in 17 points and hounded Portland players for six steals. With some much needed rest coming their way, Marshwood looks to get back on track against Cheverus on Saturday.
Noble-Wells Hockey ROCHESTER, N.H. -
The Marshwood Hawks lost a tough battle to the Red Riots of Portland High on Monday, coming up short by a score of 52-37.
The Noble-Wells Hockey team blanked Bonny Eagle on their way to a 9-0 win on Jan. 15 in Rochester, N.H. Bonny Eagle was no match for Noble-Wells’ formidable offensive attack, as five Noble-Wells players turned in multi-point efforts. Dean Pratt netted four goals, while Ryer Smith and Connor Pease each had a pair as well. Ryan Marsh turned in a fourpoint effort, with a goal and three assists. Noah Pease added another three assists. Nate Paul earned the shutout for Noble-Wells, making saves on 13 of the shots he faced. The team will play Westbrook on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine.

WESTBROOK -
The Marshwood High School Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Westbrook High School on Jan. 17 and took home an eight-point victory, beating Westbrook 45-37. The girls continued their hot streak with more aggressive defense. Megan McLean lead the team in the statistical department, scoring 12 points, dishing out three assists and also forcing three steals. Lydia St. Pierre added another 10 points.

Governor LePage Account Executive Assists Maine’s First Sake Micro Brewer
by Schuman’s professional relationships with University faculty members. From the visit with his new-found UMaine connections Ford gained help with the adaptation of his manufacturing equipment. “In how many different states would I be invited to come up to a university and talk about sake, let alone find help getting started,” Ford stated. “The support here is unparalleled.” Ford added his new business relationships have been an unreal resource and one even offered to help build a sake steamer - a vital instrument in the complex brewing process with him. Through Schuman, Ford also gained the wisdom of technical consultants he would not otherwise have met, who’ve made a concerted effort to streamline his manufacturing layout. Ford, a former financial data systems consultant and 1998 graduate of Harvard, studied in both New York and Tokyo to earn the titles of advanced sake professional and mastertaster. He admits that even with his knowledge of sake, he likely could not have advanced as far as he has without Schuman’s guidance and support. “There’s a lot to be said

AUGUSTA Blue Current Brewery, LLC, of Kittery, is poised to launch its groundbreaking sake micro brewing business just as soon as it receives the final pieces of its brewing equipment. Once all the equipment is in place, Blue Current Brewery (BCB) will become the first micro brewer and manufacturer of sake east of Texas and the largest micro brewer of the Japanese spirit in the nation. BCB will take its place as one of seven breweries nationwide and will become one of only two that brew, bottle and distribute micro brewed sake. Sake is an intensely complex rice-based spirit and “is the most difficult thing to brew in the world, hands down,” said BCB founder Dan Ford. He contends that the intellectual, technical and financial aid he has received thus far was primarily gained from his partnership with Governor LePage Account Executive, Kristine Schuman. Governor LePage expressed his satisfaction with Schuman and Ford’s collabora-
tion. “Kristine Schuman, as well as the entire Account Executive team, provides a critical link to the available economic resources and assistance that help Maine businesses grow and thrive,” said LePage. “As Blue Current Brewery can attest, this type of support and guidance helps businesses navigate the sometimes complex array of economic development programs and regulations to ensure a smoother and more seamless experience. That was my goal when we created the Account Executive team at the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), and I am delighted that it continues to yield positive results.” In a recent interview, Ford discussed his experience with Schuman in that regard. “Kristine has been instrumental in getting me connected - a vital link - to resources in Maine.” When asked to elaborate, Ford mentioned his opportunity to speak about his product at the University of Maine Orono campus, a visit brought together
Animal Welfare Society and Voice for Animals Join Forces to Help NH Cats WEST KENNEBUNK Voice For Animals (VFA), a non-profit organization headquartered in York, recently reached out to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) in West Kennebunk, to assist in providing spay/neuter surgeries to low income cat owners in eastern New Hampshire. AWS is a companion animal shelter serving 21 communities in Southern Maine. VFA had recently received a grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to provide spay/neuter surgeries. Due to high demand from the public, the funds were quickly used, but many requests for help remained open. AWS quickly arranged two clinics to help meet the demand. On Oct. 16 and Dec. 4, AWS held Spay Days at the Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic and provided 42 surgeries to VFA clients at a highly subsidized rate of $20 for a spay/neuter, rabies vaccine and health exam. On surgery days, VFA volunteers met owners at a central location for transport to AWS. Cats came from Somersworth, Barrington, Milton, Dover, Rochester and Ossipee. Clinic volunteers processed paperwork while Dr. Steve Askin and veterinary technician Stephanie Formato performed the surgeries.
The cats were returned to their owners the same day. Annually, AWS cares for more than 2,000 homeless cats and kittens at the shelter. In response to growing intake numbers, AWS provided space to Dr. Steve Askin to open a low-cost spay/neuter clinic in May 2011. Since opening, Askin has performed nearly 7,000 spay/neuter surgeries at a low-cost for pets owned by the low-income public in Maine and New Hampshire. AWS took in 335 fewer stray and relinquished more cats and kittens in 2012 than in 2011. Time will tell if the decrease is a direct result of the Shelter Spay/ Neuter Clinic’s work or if other factors are in play. “We knew there was a need for this service in Southern Maine, but the extent of that need has been a surprise,” said Askin. “It has been very rewarding to be able to help so many people get their pets out of the breeding population. Hopefully, we are having an impact on the numbers of stray or unwanted animals.” The most recent collaboration between AWS, VFA and pet owners will prevent hundreds of kittens from being born. The Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic is open four days a week and every other Saturday. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 207-985-3244.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I am using Windows 8. The speaker icon that was on the taskbar disappeared. How do I get it back on the taskbar? Amy Dear Amy, Here is how to add or remove icons to the taskbar in Windows 8. 1. Tap the windows logo key on your keyboard (between the left Ctrl and Alt keys) and type, “Notification Area icons”. 2. Click on, “Notification Area Icons” to open the dialog box. 3. At the bottom of the dialog box, click the link that says, “Turn system icons on or off”. 4. Find the “Volume” icon in the list and make sure it is turned on. 5. Click the “OK” button to save your changes and go back to the previous screen.
6. Now, find “Volume” in this list and click the drop down list to the right of, “Volume.” 7. Click to select, “Show icon and notifications” 8. Click the “OK” button to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I print a section of an email that I open in my inbox on gmail? When I try to print it does the whole page and won’t let me select the highlighted part to print. Thanks, Diane Dear Diane, This is actually one of the most often asked questions on my site, so I will do my best to answer it once again. The ability to highlight part of an email or document, and then print only the highlighted portion

is a feature that is included with some printers, but not many. If your printer does not have that option available when you go to the printer options, you can still print only certain part of your message by copying what you have highlighted, then pasting it into a new document and printing the new document. You can also check the following page on my site: http:// wp.me/pwwRq-Q2 Not only did I answer the same question there, but there are many suggestions from other readers in the comments section of the page. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, After many years of following your newsletter and using things to improve my knowledge, I now have a question. I have a HP Computer with a replacement HP monitor. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition. When my computer goes into sleep mode it will not come back up. I replaced my monitor thinking it was the problem, but I am now having the same thing happen with this monitor. I have noticed that my keyboard and mouse brings no response to bring it back up. Could you please give me some suggestions of what might be going on. I don’t like to shut down with the off and on button,
but that is the only way without any response from the components. Thank you for being here to answer questions. Peggy Dear Peggy, I have had this same problem with different computers over the years. For some reason, power management stops working, and the computer won’t respond when you try to wake it up from sleep mode. The easiest and least expensive way to fix this problem is to change the power settings so that the computer does not enter sleep mode any more. To do this, click on “Start” and then, “Control Panel”. In the “Control Panel” window, click on, “Hardware and Sound”. In the “Power Options” section, click on, “Change when the computer sleeps”. Using the drop down list, change both the, “Turn off the display” and, “Put the Computer to sleep” settings to “Never” and click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window. There are other things that you can try, like a clean install of Windows, but honestly, short of replacing the computer, there is really no fix that is guaranteed to work. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Love your newsletter!

Dear Gary, I wish I knew more about your computer, such as what operating system you are running and how old the computer is. Usually, when we get a virtual memory message like that it means that a program has reserved a portion of the virtual memory and has not released it. Shutting down the computer and starting it back up again will force the program to release the reserved memory. Since you say that this only happens from time to time, the best solution is to restart your computer when you see this message. If you want to increase the size of your virtual memory file, Microsoft has directions on their site. Just go to www.microsoft. com and search there. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
