Wells Lady Warriors “Shootin’ for a Cure” Raises $18,590
Wells Lady Warriors Varsity Basketball team presents check to York Hospital (l-r) YH Breast Radiologist, Rebecca Hultman, DO, Mammography Techs, Kathy Bry & Lisa Plourde, President, Jud Knox, Trustee, John Houlihan, Oncology Practice Manager, Mary Ellen Valhos.
WELLS Clearly the Wells Lady Warriors had never heard of the old adage “calm before the storm.” On Saturday, January 19, prior to the arrival of Sunday’s snow and sleet, at their 10th annual “Shootin’ for a Cure” (SFAC), the team never sat still, doing everything within their power and four gym walls, to raise money for York Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer Fund! After which, they presented
York Hospital with a check for $18,590, bringing the event’s ten year total to $270,790! Coach Don Abbott, smiling and proudly dressed in his patented pink sweater said, “In 10 years, we have had over 700 kids participate in Shootin’ for a Cure. This community has answered the call time and again, supporting our players as they strived to help as many people as possible. Our committee is so grateful to all those who have given so self-
lessly over the years to help make this endeavor a success.” This event that Coach Abbott spearheaded, with the SFAC Committee (all remaining together for ten years!), began with a free throw shoot out, involving 81 girls in grades 5-12, who raised money through pledges, and culminated in an exciting game versus Gray-New Gloucester. ment. She also founded the York County Elder Abuse Task Force in 2005 when she recognized that a multidisciplinary approach was needed to address the epidemic of scams. Officer Simeoni, who was invited to testify by Senator Collins, has worked on an astonishing 77 elder justice cases in the past year alone ranging from the loss of hundreds of dollars to entire estates. Three of her cases have been referred to the local district attorney. “Over my law enforcement
career, I’ve had the opportunity to complete extensive training in the field of elder abuse,” said Officer Simeoni. “I’m proud to have been part of numerous advances in combating elder abuse over the past 15 years. I have a true passion for being the voice of our vulnerable populations, primarily our elderly and those with disabilities.” “Officer Simeoni has been a leader in fighting fraud against Maine seniors, working on nearly 80 elder justice cases in the past year alone,” said Sena-

fraud. “Combatting fraud has long been a focus of my Committee. This is the 22nd hearing the Aging Committee has held in the past six years to examine scams affecting older Americans, Senator Collins continued. “Stopping these scam artists requires a coordinated response from all levels of our government and the private sector, but alert citizens will always be the best line of defense. The Committee’s work has helped inform seniors and put criminals on notice that they will be caught and brought to justice. During the hearing, Senator Collins unveiled the Aging Committee’s 2019 Fraud Book, which details the top 10 most common scams reported to the Committee’s Fraud Hotline (1855-303-9470) over the past year. Senator Collins pointed out that one of the commonalities of these scams is that many seniors have trouble ending conversations with con artists because they feel it is rude to simply hang up the phone. She asked Officer Simeoni if she had any suggestions for seniors who suspect the person on the other end of the
line is a scammer. Officer Simeoni told the Committee that scammers take advantage of seniors’ politeness and can be charismatic or threatening. Recently, Officer Simeoni learned that a Kennebunk senior was scammed out of nearly $5,000 because they felt harassed and intimidated. “I wish I could talk to every elder and let them know that it’s okay to hang up and it’s okay to protect yourself in a way where you just hang up the phone,â€? Officer Simeoni said. As the president of the York County Elder Abuse Task Force, Officer Simeoni has assembled a group of committed professionals from an array of fields who share their knowledge and serve as a resource to educate the public. Their efforts include: Coordinating senior safety roadshows to give 30-minute talks on current scams in the local area; Partnering with local law enforcement and town General Assistance representatives when meeting with residents and Hosting a very successful conference focused on the importance of the multidisciplinary approach to elder abuse. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Eliot Historical Society to Present “A Colored Man from Exeter” ELIOT Before he passed at age 94, Harold E. Ward made a request of his son, “Michael, will you do me a favor? Will you please write down our family history? I want my grandchildren and great-grandchildren to know from whence they came.” Harold’s son, Michael Cameron Ward, is the author of “A Colored Man from Exeter”.
The book is a wonderfully told story about an African American family that relocates to New Hampshire in the late 50s and the trials and tribulations of dealing with the practical problems of life, but also more saliently the overt but more commonly underlying racism that permeates the culture. Ward takes you through the story of his father’s life from his early years, his time in the post WWII
navy, and as a chef till his last days in New Hampshire. It covers his experiences, struggles as an African American within these contexts, and social ascension in the community. On February 4 at 7 p.m., the Eliot Historical Society welcomes Ward to share his father’s inspiring journey. Please note that a larger than usual audience is anticipated for this event and that
it will be held at the Congregational Church at 1361 State Road in Eliot. All are invited to this free program (donations will be gratefully accepted). Books will be available for purchase and the author will gladly sign them. For more information, call Carolyn Bogh at 207-439-2404.

Get Cozy with a Family Friendly Concert KITTERY The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) ‘Get Cozy’ chamber music series continues Sunday, February 10 at 3 p.m. with “Of Frogs and Fools, Haydn and Holland’s Houses— a Family Friendly Concert for the Young at Heart” performed by Quintessence at The Dance Hall, in Kittery. This concert features two stories, Frog and Toad in the Garden, and The Fool of the World, intertwined with some classics from the repertoire including Divertimento in Bb by Haydn. As part of the program MyPSO will be introducing a family of musicians: young brothers Nathan and Gabe on viola and cello are joined by their mother (and narrator) Marissa Federico in the opening story “The Prince Rooster” by Newburyport Music Festival Director David Yang, adapted to the young musicians. The Seacoast’s beloved woodwind quintet, Quintes-
sence is delighted to include special guest, Rochester storyteller Joanne Piazzi, to bring the stories to life. Joanne Piazzi has been telling stories professionally since 1996. She has an MA in the Creative Arts in Education from Lesley University. Joanne is a member of the Seacoast Storytellers (NH) and LANES. Piazzi also leads workshops for educators and children. “Quintessence has spent many rehearsals with different members’ children playing at our feet. Performing engaging stories with our music felt
like the perfect outgrowth for our group,” commented Virginia Macdonald, Quintessence member and Executive Director of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra. Get Cozy chamber concert tickets are $16 in advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased on The Dance Hall website, www.thedancehallkittery.org. Seating is limited and at-thedoor tickets are not guaranteed to be available. Additional performance details and tickets are available at www.portsmouthsymphony.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I read your answers faithfully, and I hope you can help me learn how to get used to the newest version of Excel. It seems like finding common commands is a lot harder than it used to be. For example, printing my worksheet used to be one click, but now, I have to click at least three times before my worksheet is sent to the printer. Do you have an easier way? Allen Dear Allen, I hear your frustration! I print worksheets fairly frequently, so I don’t like having to click three or four times just to get to that command. Fortunately, Microsoft has provided a way for us to put commonly used commands right at our fingertips in newer versions of Excel. It is called the Quick Access Toolbar. You can add commands that you use frequently to the Quick Access Toolbar so that they are one click away. Here is
how: 1. Open Excel, and look at the green bar at the very top of the window. 2. Click the small down arrow near the left hand edge of the green bar. 3. If the command you want to add is listed, just click on it to add to the toolbar. 4. If the command you want is not on the list, click on “More Commands” to use a more extensive list. 5. Select the command you want on the left, and click the “Add” button in the middle to add the command. 6. When you have added all the commands you want, click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window to close it and save your changes. If you want to remove an icon from the Quick Access Toolbar, just right click on that icon, and in the context menu, click on “Remove from Quick Access Toolbar”. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A friend suggested I install Infranview to edit pictures. When I Google Infranview, all

that comes up is IRFANVIEW. Whether I try to download Infranview or Irfanview, my AVG virus program comes up and advises against the downloads, one stating that it is a relatively new program, and the other attempt simply would not let me do the download. This friend has highly recommended her picture editing program and I would love to have it. Thanks for your help. Don Dear Don, I have not heard of Infranview, but I have used Irfanview for more than 10 years and I think it is a great program. I did an online search for the program you are looking for, but all I found was various websites that look like they were set up to take advantage of people who were searching for Irfanview, but spelled it wrong. The program, Irfanview is a great little program for viewing images and doing some basic editing. When you view a folder full of photos using Irfanview, you just open the first image, and can quickly go from one image to the next using the space bar on your keyboard. I also like to use it to crop, re-size and convert my images, but it is not as good at adding text or combining images. You can find Irfanview at: www. irfanview.com When I want to use more powerful image editing features, I use a free, open

source program called, Gimp which is available at www.gimp. org. Gimp is a very powerful image editing program similar to expensive programs like Photoshop. If you are not familiar with image editing programs, the Gimp website has some tutorials, and you can usually find a tutorial for what you want to do with a simple Google search. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Could you please instruct me as to how to delete sent messages? I have so many. I would like to keep some for a record, could I do that? Thanks so much, Darlene Dear Darlene, Since you didn’t mention what email program you were using, I almost deleted your email without answering it. I noticed, however, that your email address was with Gmail, so I am going to take a guess that you are using Gmail’s online interface for your email. To delete your sent messages in Gmail, click on “Sent” in the left column. This will display the contents of your sent message folder. If you want to get rid of them all, you can click on the small check box just above the list of messages. This selects all the messages on the current page. As soon as you select all the messages on the page, a message will appear near the top of the list with a link for you to click if you want to select all the messages in your folder. Click this link to select all your sent messages, then click the trash icon at the top of the window. If you want to keep some of your sent messages, it is easy to go through the folder and delete only some of the messages. If you are only keeping a few messages, click on the check box at the top of the page, to select all the messages on that page, then click the check box for each message you want to keep to unselect that particular message. When you have the
messages you want to delete selected, click the trash can icon at the top of the window. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I go about reformatting a Seagate external hard drive to use on my new laptop? I Was using it with my old desktop. Thanks, Shirley Dear Shirley, It is actually pretty easy to format an external hard drive, but I do have to stress that when you do this, everything on the drive will be erased. As long as you have the files on the external hard drive stored someplace else and you are ready to format it (and erase it in the process) lets’ get started. First, using the USB cable, plug the drive into your new laptop. Now open your “File Explorer” window and click on “This PC” in the left column. You should see your external hard drive listed with your other drives. Note: Make sure you are working on the external hard drive, and NOT your local drives. If you are in doubt, unplug the external hard drive and make a note of which drive is gone from the “File Explorer” window. Right click on the external hard drive, and click on “Format...” in the context menu that appears. A formatting dialog box will open. Just click the “Start” button near the bottom. A warning dialog box will appear, asking you if you are sure you want to erase everything on the disk. If you are sure, click the “OK” button and your disk format will start. Keep in mind, that a large disk might take a few hours before the format is finished. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Health & Fitness Diabetes & High Blood Pressure Major Risk Factors February is American Heart Month and Dr. Brandei Wingard, Cath Lab Director, Southern Maine Health Care Cardiology and American Heart Association (Maine) Board Member, shares some important tips to help lessen your risk. Diabetes Diabetes is a condition that results in blood sugar rising to dangerous levels. Blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is your main source of energy and comes mostly from the food you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body’s cells absorb the glucose from your blood and use it as fuel for energy or store it for later use. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its insulin, or both. This causes blood glucose to rise too high, leading to many health problems. Type 2 diabetes, known as adult onset diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. About 90-95% of American adults diagnosed with diabetes have type 2. It is most common in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young adults. You’re more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are: 45 years of age or older, overweight or obese, don’t get enough physical activity, have a family history of diabetes, have had gestational diabetes, have pre-diabetes.
ently too high. High blood pressure is the second leading cause of preventable heart disease and stroke deaths, second only to smoking. It’s known as the “silent killer” because often there are no symptoms, despite its role in significantly increasing the risk for heart disease and stroke. High blood pressure is controllable with lifestyle changes and medications. New guidelines cite that high blood pressure should be treated earlier with lifestyle changes and in some patients with medication – at 130/80 mm Hg rather than 140/90 mm Hg. The guidelines were published by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology and provide guidance for the detection, prevention, management and treatment of high blood pressure. Studies showed that more lives could be saved by addressing high blood pressure at this new lower level. Previously, high blood pressure was thought to affect 1 in 3 U.S. adults (32%). The new guide-
lines suggest that nearly half of the U.S. adult population (46&) have high blood pressure. The hope is that this condition will be determined earlier, and so that people can begin lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, reducing dietary sodium, and exercising 30 minutes most days of the week. For most people, lifestyle changes will help bring down blood pressure numbers. Regular exercise and losing ten pounds can have a good impact on blood pressure. Blood pressure should be checked regularly throughout life to ensure it is controlled and when necessary, depending on risk, medication might be added. You can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by: Consult with your doctor, implement lifestyle changes – including healthy eating habits, weight loss and increased physical activity - even small increases in activity can make a large difference, quit smoking, properly manage stress, monitor and keep track of your blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and

Clean Indoor Air Can Help Reduce Asthma Attacks Did you know that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25 million Americans, including roughly seven million children, have asthma? It’s true, and those numbers have steadily risen in recent years. Asthma is more than occasional wheezing or feeling out of breath during physical activity. Asthma is chronic and can lead to coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, fast breathing, and chest tightness, states the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. In the 21st century, people spend significant time indoors at home, school or work, and indoor air environments could be triggers for asthma. Improving indoor air quality can
help people breathe clearly. The AAFA notes that the following agents can adversely affect indoor air quality, potentially triggering asthma attacks. Allergens Allergens such as mold, dust mites, pet dander and fur, and waste from insects or rodents thrive in many homes. Ensuring indoor air quality is high can cut back on the amount of allergens in the air. People with asthma can invest in an air purifier and vacuum regularly, being sure to use a HEPA-equipped appliance. Routinely replacing HVAC system filters can help prevent allergens from blowing around the house. Also, frequent maintenance of HVAC systems will ensure they

are operating safely and not contributing to poor indoor air quality. Mold can be mitigated by reducing moisture in a home. Moist environments in the kitchen and bathroom may promote mold growth. Ventilation is key to keep mold at bay. Tobacco smoke Thirdhand smoke, or THS, may be unfamiliar to many people. A 2011 report published in Environmental Health Perspectives says THS is an invisible combination of gases and particles that can cling to clothing, cushions, carpeting, and other materials long after secondhand smoke has cleared from a room. Studies have indicated that residual nicotine levels can be found in house dust where people smoke or once smoked. Studies have indicated that smoke compounds can adsorb onto surfaces and then desorb back into air over time.
Keeping tobacco smoke out of a home can improve indoor air quality and personal health. VOCs Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases released from commonly used products. These can include paints and varnishes, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, new furniture, and new carpet. People with asthma may find that VOCs can trigger attacks. Airing out items, reducing usage of products that are heavily scented and choosing low- or no-VOC products can help. Making cleaning products from baking soda, vinegar and liquid oil soap also can keep indoor air quality high. Homeowners who plan to renovate their homes can consider using the appropriate specifications for HVAC systems to promote good indoor air, as well as address any other potential problems that may be compromising indoor air quality. Did I mention I’m a charmer too? I’m seeking a home where I can play, be loved upon and would be fine with other kitties wanting a playmate (I’m one of a litter of 7 the ONLY boy no less, so I know how to play well with others). I have seen dogs from afar, but am uncertain about if I like them or not. If gradually introduced, I think they would pass the sniff test eventually. I also like young respectful children – no tail pull-

He’s looking for a home that has energetic residents but a laid back atmosphere with minimal foot traffic inside and out. He lives life at 110%, but can get overwhelmed with too many new people and dogs. On walks, his desire to greet other dogs quickly turns into serious frustration and can render the walk near impossible. His new family should be patient and willing to work closely with the AWS behavior team to help him continue his progress. Here at the shelter he has

WELLS Imagine being a homeless cat in the winter. Granite was one of them. His home was under a trailer, just a hole in the dirt with a few leaves for a bed. He’d seen another stray being fed nearby so he started eating there too. Receiving daily meals helped Granite survive the freezing temperatures and icy rains. The woman who fed him made him a shelter using an old doghouse, insulation, bedding and a tarp. Every night she checked on him with a flashlight, and every night there he was, gratefully waiting for some food, water and affection. Granite and now he’s enjoying a great life indoors, at our adoption center. Volunteers take turns staying overnight with him and spoiling him. He’s a handsome longhaired granitecolored beauty who’s getting brushed regularly. Granite did test positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is NOT life-threatening but he’ll need someone who makes sure he gets to the vet if he catches a cold. Granite is fine living with other cats, animals and people. Also, due to the harsh life he’s lived, Granite is a little lame in
his hind leg, but gets around just fine and loves to jumps up on window ledge and feel the sunshine. He loves to cuddle, loves attention, being talked to, fussed over and being brushed – in fact, he’s so happy, when he purrs, he drools!

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

BUSINESS & FINANCE Social Security Warns of Scam
NATIONWIDE In the digital age, frauds and scams are an unfortunate part of doing business online and Social Security Public Affairs Specialist, Elizabeth Newport wants to alert the public. “We urge everyone to always be cautious and to avoid providing sensitive information such as Social Security Numbers (SSN) or bank account information to unknown individuals over the phone or internet. If you receive a call and aren’t expecting one, you must be extra careful. You can always get the caller’s information, hang up, and — if you do need more clarification — contact the official phone number of the business or agency that the caller claims to represent. Never reveal personal data to a stranger who called you. Newport said. To further illustrate this point, it was also noted that there’s a scam going around right now where unsuspecting individuals might receive a call from someone claiming to be from Social Security or another agency. Calls can even display the 1-800-7721213, Social Security’s national customer service number, as the incoming number on your caller ID. In some cases, the caller states that Social Security does not have all of your personal information, such as your Social Security number on file. Other callers claim Social Security needs additional information so the agency can increase your benefit payment, or that Social Security will terminate your benefits if they do not confirm your information. This appears to be a widespread issue, as reports
have come from people across the country. Newport wants to stress that these calls are not from Social Security. Callers sometimes state that your Social Security number is at risk of being deactivated or deleted. The caller then asks individuals to provide a phone number to resolve the issue. People should be aware the scheme’s details may vary; however, you should avoid engaging with the caller or calling the number provided, as the caller might attempt to acquire personal information. Social Security employees do occasionally contact people by telephone for customerservice purposes. In only a
few special situations, would a Social Security employee request the person confirm personal information over the phone. Social Security employees will never threaten you or promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up. If you do receive any questionable calls, please report the information to the Office of the Inspector General at 1-800269-0271 or online at oig.ssa. gov/report. Protecting your information is an important part of Social Security’s mission to secure today and tomorrow.
