Motorcycle and Jeep Ride to Support

YORK COUNTY -

Stay; For Life, a local nonprofit aimed at decreasing the stigma around men’s mental health, invites all riders to their first annual Motorcycle and Jeep Ride on Saturday, July 22. The ride begins at the Trailblazers Club in Wells and will end at Iron Tails Saloon in Acton, where a full day of events will be ready for all to enjoy.

Men’s Mental Health

“Our organization strives to shine a light on the importance of mental health, specifically for men, by facilitating discussions about mental health and suicide,” said Angela Stevens, co-founder of Stay; For Life. The non-profit was established after the suicide death of her 18 year old son, Trent, in June of 2022. “Everyone struggles with mental health from time to time, including men. Maybe this could have been prevented… if men’s mental health was more of an open topic, and less of a stigma to talk about.”

The first annual ride will be approximately 1.5 hours in length, and although specific to motorcycles and Jeeps, all are welcome to attend the full day event after the ride at Iron Tails. Guests can enjoy local vendors, food, drinks, raffles, contests and live music by the band Leaving Eden. The Stay; For Life team will be on hand with mental health and suicide prevention resources.

Stay; For Life provides outreach to schools, businesses, and the community, offering education around suicide

facts and prevention, and advocacy around the importance of mental health in today’s world. Funds raised at events like this help Stay; For Life support those currently struggling with their mental health, as well as those who are dealing with the grief of losing a loved one to suicide.

Registration on the day of the ride will run 9-10 a.m., with the race starting promptly at 10:30 a.m. Admission is $20 per rider. For more information and to register, visit www. stayforlife.org, email stayforlife2022@gmail.com, or call 207-608-1141.

KENNEBUNKFirst Parish Unitarian Church in Kennebunk is excited to announce its annual Blueberry Festival & Craft Fair on Saturday, July 22. The fair showcases blueberry-related products, handcrafted artwork and home goods, as well as the always popular vintage jewelry table. Attendees can enjoy homemade blueberry confections, crab rolls, vegan wraps, hot dogs, and homemade tangy lemon ice cream.

Over 40 arts and crafts vendors from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts will be set up in colorful tents on the lawn. Some vendors have been working the annual festival for several years, with new vendors slated to join in this year. Blueberry cheese and a variety of other cheeses will be offered by West River Creamery, Vermont. Artists and artisans from all around New England will be showcasing painted seascapes and landscapes, handmade textiles, modern art, embellished clothing, hand-made pottery, and products made from reclaimed wood. Original cards, natural soaps, lotions, and fragrances, seacoast glass, silver jewelry, painted glassware, hats, wooden signs, and even gifts for

a favorite pet are just a few of the many additional items available for sale. Three award-winning authors will also be on hand to offer their books to children, teens and adults.

This year’s Blueberry Festival also marks the 250th Anniversary of the First Parish Church, located at 114 Main Sreet in Kennebunk. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that Saturday. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ people/blueberry-and-craft-fairin-kennebunk-maine.

Open Farm Day Next Sunday

STATEWIDEMaine Open Farm Day is happening all across the state on Sunday, July 23. The annual public event was started by Maine farmers and their supporters in 1989 to promote local agriculture and to educate visitors about the essential role farming plays in the public’s everyday lives. Now in its 34th year, the agritourism event has succeeded in raising awareness about Maine farms and the products, livestock and produce they provide. Maine

Open Farm Day is an opportunity to connect visitors to Maine farms so they may learn and see firsthand the care and effort that goes into running a family farm. Each site will be hosting its own itinerary of workshops, tours and demonstrations for the day, offering the public a chance to meet the farmers and to learn more about local farming.

Area farms participating this year include: Ewe and

New Bus Route Links Kennebunk to Sanford, Biddeford Positive Living Award Nominees

KENNEBUNKThe Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce (KKACC) and its area partners, are the most recent recipient of a Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) grant to create a two-

year workforce transportation pilot program.

The chamber worked with area businesses, including Biddeford Saco OOB Transit (BSOOB), RideMaine and the Town of Kennebunk, to survey the needs of local businesses and

secure matching grant funds from partner businesses.

The new program, the Go Kennebunks/Sanford/Biddeford Ridership Program, operates in conjunction with the new BSOOB line. BSOOB buses will carry employees from partner businesses, as well as members of the public, along the route. BSOOB Transit plans three daily runs, including weekends. Pick up is at School Street with the bus traveling down Route 99 to Route 1, Kennebunk, then to downtown Biddeford.

Times and stops could change. Partner businesses can have their employees ride the entire BSOOB line, at any time, for free with the new bus passes issued by the chamber. Riders are encouraged to contact their employers to see if they qualify for the free bus passes.

The chamber hopes that

The Divas’ sound is based on harmony. It is a toe-tapping, hand-clapping good time, moving audiences’ feet onto the floor to dance. The group regularly performs in concert halls and at music festivals, benefits and conferences.

One reporter recently wrote in a post-concert review, “All bluegrass, soul and gospel fans be forewarned: if you miss this funky group, to paraphrase a line in one of their songs, it ain’t nobody’s fault but yours.”

The Funky divas will perform Friday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, in Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport. The building has accessible handicap entrance.

There are no tickets or entrance fees, but free-will donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, visit www. funkydivasofgospel.org, or email billsusie58@hotmail.com.

Annex Contemporary Dance Returns to Star Theatre

KITTERY -

Annex Contemporary Dance Company (ACDC) returns to the Star Theatre with “Annex Contemporary Dance in Concert,” on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. The special program will include a collection of new and favorite repertory works by Artistic Director Julie Hebb, a York resident and former principal dancer at Kelly Ballet in New York City.

Utilizing contemporary ballet and modern dance forms, Hebb’s choreography explores the dancers’ relationships to diverse musical scores and to one another – investigating what pulls people together and drives them apart. Audience favorite “A Day in the Life,” set to a rhythmic, electronic soundtrack, finds dancers moving through the rituals and complexities of daily life, often with humor and harmony, and at times, with an edge of discord and discomfort. In contrast, the lively ballet “Three Preludes,” invites the dancers to play and interact with Gershwin’s brilliant piano score. Hebb’s newest work, “Pathways,” is a collection of sweeping solos and interconnected groupings that explore how divergent paths can meet and deviate, and often

lead to something new and unexpected.

The presentation at the Star is part of the company’s summer season, which also includes a performance at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport, MA on Saturday, July 15, as well as a continued affiliation with the Lila Dance Festival in Rochester, NH, in late August.

Says Hebb, “I love that we can continue to build a foundation of support for the dance arts in and for our community. Dance is an elusive art form; in live performance, moments are so fleeting but can have so much impact. The more we can nurture all aspects of dance... the more the dance arts can grow and flourish here.”

The company’s home, the Dance Annex Studio in York, is also growing. Construction is underway for an additional 1,200 square feet of dance space at its current location.

Both performances are at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. Tickets are $25 general admission, with a 20% discount for students and seniors (use promo code ACDC20). For more information, visit www.thedanceannexstudio.com.

NORTH BERWICK -

Meet our sweet dog of the week, Max! Max is a three-yearold rat terrier mix who is both sweet and calm. He bonds to his person quickly. Max is about 20 lbs., is neutered and is up-to-date on his vaccinations. He would do well in a home without a lot of noise and commotion. A fencedin yard would be ideal.

Max is good with other small dogs, however, we would not recommend him for families with kids, as Max’s pervious home had kids who teased him.

If you would like to meet this handsome boy, call us. Emma’s Angels Rescue is an all volunteer, foster based organization in North Berwick.

to amuse or entertain the family, compassion is learned.

Children learn that animals are friends, companions, and family. And oh, are they wonderful and fun! Nothing is more amusing than watching kitties playing and pouncing around. Young kittens have much to learn, and they are notorious explorers.

Kittens are known to get into a heap of trouble because they are fearless. They have been known to climb into washers and dryers and burrow into recliners. These adventures can prove tragic unless the family is observant and the kittens are supervised.

That’s why Safe Haven recommends that for anyone adopting a young kitten or two, the animals should be the only toddlers in the family at the time. Since the kittens need constant attention, they will be safer and their owners much less stressed.

Kittens are small, fast and curious, and they need to be monitored and protected.

Children age 6 and older are best for kittens because they understand how fragile the little ones are. They will embrace the “grown-up” role of watching a new animal family member. It is quite an honor to be considered responsible enough to be trusted with such tasks as making sure the little kitten does not jump into the toilet or get trapped inside the refrigerator. Kids understand that this new little friend relies on them, a great feeling.

Cats can live to be 15, sometimes 20 years. Adding kittens to the family when children are young will provide the entire family with moments of hilarity and touching memories that will last a lifetime.

Safe Haven has a precious litter of kittens who are now ready to be adopted in pairs. They are 12 weeks old and have

Triple C Stable Rescues Horses in Need

SOUTH BERWICKHorses are Cathy Murphy’s passion, making it her life’s work to rescue and care for as many horses in need as possible. Murphy and her family own Triple C Stable in South Berwick. Like many other stables, they offer boarding, riding lessons and summer camps, but Murphy has taken her commitment to horse care to another level. A portion of proceeds from all services and events at Triple C goes toward the care, feeding and rehabilitation of horses they have rescued. It costs thousands of

dollars to pay kill pen fees and to trailer the horses to Maine from various locations. Triple C currently has several horses that they have saved from kill pens. Here are two of them:

received love from their momma, and top care from Safe Haven’s volunteers. The kittens are full of innocent mischief, and will require a responsible family for their best care. How easy it would be for one to slip out a door that closes too slowly, or because someone ran out the door out too quickly.

Griffin, Grayson, Giselle, and Gia each have their own personalities, but each are equally wonderful. Gia and Giselle are featured in the photo, and all four kittens can be seen on Safe Haven’s website. Families ready to begin a lifetime relationship with a pair of kittens can apply for adoption online.

Please help keep the love growing. Safe Haven cannot rescue, give medical care, or prepare homeless kitties for new homes without financial support. A former Amish plow horse, Ben had been put up for auction in Texas. When Murphy saw his picture, she could see how defeated he looked. Ben’s spirit was slowly ebbing after all he had suffered and physically, he was in bad shape. An animal communicator told Murphy that Ben longed to lay down as he had been standing for weeks, but there was no safe place to do so, so he continued to stand. At Triple C, Murphy assured Ben that he was safe and loved, and would always be cared for. When she returned to his stall later that evening, Ben was lying down, a sure sign he felt at home. Ben will now be one of the horses used in Triple C’s therapy programs. A big boy, he stands 19.2 hands and is a gentle giant. Ben loves to be petted and has a lot of love to give.

Nathan was born to Harriette (Hat) and Ronald (Ron) Duford on April 5, 1971 in Portsmouth, NH.

Nathan grew up in Wells, graduating from Wells High School where he excelled on honor roll, and in running track and cross country. including Lonza Biologic, New England Biotech, and most recently at Bristol Myer Squibb at Fort Devens, MA.

At an early age, Nathan had a passion for playing guitar. He loved jamming with his cousins and friends to the tunes of B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Allman Brothers. Gardening for Health and Happiness

“But though an old man, I am but a young gardener,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in a letter to Charles Willson Peale, dated August 20, 1811. Spending time surrounded by plants and working the land can have various positive effects on one’s health. One study by the Master Gardener Foundation of Spokane, WA, found that hospital patients with plants in their room displayed less fatigue, anxiety and pain and often had shorter hospital stays. Children with attention deficit disorder (ADD) have shown a reduction of symptoms when they have access to play in grassy outdoor spaces. Those with clinical depression who

home & garden

participate in gardening activities experience a reduction in the severity of symptoms. Gardening on a daily basis was found to reduce the risk factors for dementia by 36%. Dementia patients with access to gardens experience fewer injuries, improved sleep patterns and display less aggression and agitation.

Mayo Clinic and AARP consider gardening to be good exercise and their studies have found the activity to lower stress and anxiety and encourage better eating habits. In addition, it increases vitamin D and calcium levels due to sun exposure.

Vitamin D boosts the immune system and strengthens bones. The risk of skin cancer must be considered of course, but the

science is clear: a little sunshine in the garden goes a very long way - just do not forget a hat and good sunscreen! Both organizations encourage joining a garden club or participating in a community garden project as they have the added benefit of combating loneliness, which in turn improves quality of life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also classifies gardening as exercise. Raking and cutting grass fall under the category of light to moderate exercise. Shoveling, digging, planting and pruning are considered vigorous exercise. Just a moderate amount

of exercise each day reduces the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Ask any gardener how all that pulling, stretching, twisting, bending and lifting works muscles! Despite a few aches the next day, those gardening workouts strengthens the body, increase stamina and flexibility, lift spirits and fight depression and anxiety. And on top of all this, what is more delightful than tending to a garden?

So, pick up that trowel and dig your way to health and happiness – and remain a young gardener!

YORK COUNTY -

Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) was awarded $3 million dollars in supplemental RLF funding, one of nine agencies nationally to receive the maximum amount of funding. The award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to expedite the assessment and clean up of polluted sites across the country.

According to Raegan Young, SMPDC Special Projects and Communications Manager, the funding will go towards SMPDC’s revolving loan fund and grants program, which has received a total of nearly $13 million dollars from the EPA over the last 16 years, resulting in 21 brownfield clean-up projects that are either completed or in progress.

Young says the potential projects highlighted for use of this new funding include the former site of Prime Tanning in Berwick, International Woolen Mill in Sanford and other commercial and housing developments in Kittery and Biddeford. Says Young, “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding will extend the capacity of the program to provide support for more cleanups in the areas most needed in 39 towns within York County, southern Oxford County, and Cumberland County.”

EPA New England Regional Administrator David

W. Cash says, “This funding will revitalize communities across New England, and jump start economic redevelopment and job creation in many of New England’s hardest hit and underserved communities.”

The site of Prime Tanning, a leather tannery that closed in 2008, was a contaminated site until a citizens group called Envision Berwick saw it as an opportunity to create a community-centered, walkable downtown. In 2016, Berwick worked with SMPDC to begin assessing the site as part of the EPA’s brownfield environmental program. Great Falls Construction acquired the property in 2019, and began clean-up, abatement and construction on what is now known as “The Edge At Berwick,” a multi-use residential

and commercial development. SMPDC will continue to support clean up at the property through completion.

Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) is a non-partisan nonprofit that cultivates thriving, sustainable communities and strengthens local governments by leading planning and economic development for 39 member towns in Southern Maine. The organization was founded in 1964 to provide technical expertise to municipalities in York, southern Oxford and Cumberland Counties. SMPDC offers a coordinated effort for land use, smart growth, resource management, environmental sustainability, and transportation planning. For more information, visit www.smpdc.org

ELIOTThe Eliot Aging in Place Committee (AIP) recognizes that communities need to take the lead in becoming more dementia inclusive, as the majority of the over six million people diagnosed with dementia live at home. A dementia-inclusive community allows people living with dementia to enjoy the best possible quality of life, remain in the homes they love,

and enjoy social connections with neighbors and friends they have known for years.

AIP has begun a project to raise public awareness of dementia and increase social participation for people living with dementia. The goals are to minimize stigma and discrimination and support people living with dementia to function at their highest level while finding joy, purpose, and meaning. Support

for this project comes through partnerships with the University of Maine’s Center on Aging, the Maine Community Foundation, and the University of New England’s AgingME project.

The public awareness component began recently with an in-service dementia training at the Eliot Police Department. The presentation included basics of dementia, communication tips and supportive interventions, critical thinking strategies, and ways that families and first responders can be prepared when crisis situations occur. AIP continues these conversations with Eliot residents and community groups who are interested in learning more. AIP provided the Willian Fogg Library with a copy of the book, “Pathways To WellBeing with Dementia: Manual of Help, Hope and Inspiration,” developed by Dementia Action Alliance. Free PDF copies are available for download at www. daanow.org/pathways-to-wellbeing-with-dementia.

AIP is also creating activity boxes that contain games and puzzles designed specifically for

stuck out, and she could barely stand. She suffered from colic as a result of underfeeding. Reintroducing a healthy diet was painstaking and difficult. Cassie was also riddled with lice, and had some bad wounds from being bitten by other horses. She was a horse near the end. At Triple C, Cathy patiently brought Cassie back to health, and while doing so, discovered that Cassie adores kids. Cathy soon found the role Cassie was born for: doing children’s birthday parties. Cassie has even played the part of a unicorn, and is now a happy and healthy horse.

Triple C’s rescue horses are wonderful animals whom Murphy and her family are thrilled to have at their stable. “This is their forever home and we are their forever family,” she says.

To that end, the stable continues to launch new revenue streams to support their rescue mission. Triple C debuted the opening of The Hayloft earlier this year, an equine-friendly bed-and-breakfast. Triple C has long offered themed birthday parties, but are now expanding into weddings, fundraisers, and other special events. For more information, visit www.triplecstable.com or call 603-817-7870.

Increased Funding for Maine Family Planning Earns Initial Approval Bill Enacted To Improve Access To Oral Health Care

STATEWIDERecently, LD 1478, “An Act to Improve Women’s Health and Economic Security

by Funding Family Planning Services,” earned the initial support of the Maine Senate. This bill, sponsored by Sen. Teresa S. Pierce, D-Falmouth, would supplement expiring federal funding to critical health care services provided around the state. The bill was passed 19-12 on party lines.

“Maine Family Planning has helped countless Mainers over the last half-century get access to health care. This organization provides care far beyond what is traditionally considered to be part of ‘family planning’ services, including life-saving cancer screenings,” said Sen. Pierce. “Uncertainty at the federal level due to a number of court decisions in just the past year threaten the resources available. I am grateful to my Democratic colleagues for their support of these essential health care services.”

LD 1478, as amended, would provide ongoing funding of $3,390,000 in each year of the next two fiscal years to be distributed by the Department

of Health and Human Services to Maine Family Planning, a statewide, not-for-profit organization, to provide management and oversight of the delivery of health screenings and family planning services. Maine Family Planning was founded more than 50 years ago to ensure access to the full range of family health services for Maine people, regardless of their ability to pay.

In 2022, 35,849 people were served by Maine’s Family Planning Network, which comprises 61 care sites. Services funded by the State of Maine and the federal government include: contraceptive care; screening, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections; screening, treatment or referral for cervical cancer; breast cancer screening; pregnancy testing; intrauterine insemination; vasectomy; behavioral health; and primary care.

“Access to family planning services is crucial to economic self-determination and an ability to fully participate in a democratic society for those who might become pregnant. Yet Maine has seen funding for family planning services stagnate for the past decade,” said Meagan Sway, Policy Director at the ACLU of Maine, in

STATEWIDE -

Recently, the Maine Legislature voted to enact LD 1256, a measure sponsored by Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio, DSanford, which would increase access to oral health care by expanding the Maine Dental Education Loan Program.

Maine’s current Dental Education Loan Program only provides loans and loan repayment support to dentists practicing in underserved parts of the state. LD 1256 would expand the program to include dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental assistants and expanded function dental assistants.

“The existing loan program has been available for 20 years, yet many Mainers still can’t access the care they need,” said Mastraccio. “Last session, the Legislature tried to tackle this issue by making oral care more affordable by expanding dental coverage under MaineCare, but the feedback we’ve

public hearing testimony supporting the bill. “With inflation and rising costs, this means that access to reproductive health care is less available, with some clinics only able to open one day a week. This committee has the opportunity to rectify this by passing increased funding for reproductive health care services in our state.”

The bill faces additional votes in the Senate and House. For more information, visit www.mainesenate.org or call 207-251-3548.

gotten is that folks still can’t get appointments, even when they can afford it. That tells me that affordability and the number of dentists in the state are not the only barriers to accessing dental care. It’s time we optimize our loan repayment program by expanding eligibility to practitioners, like dental therapists, who have been shown to directly enhance a practice’s ability to deliver dental care.” The bill now heads to the governor’s desk for her signature.

Mastraccio is serving her fifth non-consecutive term in the Maine House of Representatives and is a member of the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee and the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee. She represents House District 142, which includes a portion of Sanford and Springvale.

CAPE NEDDICK -

All 32 golfers from the “Over the Hill Gang” competed on Thursday, July 6 on Cape

Neddick Country Club’s par 34 front nine. The 16 two-man teams played their 8th round in their 15-week season, and this week’s top performing team was Dave Aimola and Chuck Condon. They posted the top net score of 4-under par and earned the most points (2.5) after winning their four ball match and earning a win and a tie in their singles matches. Despite earning just a half a point, the team of Bob Satter and Frank Zito maintained their first place position in the league standings. They now lead second place Scott Heminger and David Brother by only one point. Three teams (Tim Hevey and Ed Daley, George Gochros and Doug

Quagliaroli, and Jay Audet and Stu Rubinstein) are tied in third place three points behind the leaders.

Individually, three “A” Division golfers (Tim Hevey, Mark Cuneo, and Dave DiBona) all posted 4-over par 39s for the low gross score of the round. Richard Paul was the “B” Division medalist with his 11-over par 45. Hevey (-1) and Paul (even) posted the low net scores in their respective divisions. The seasonlong top golfers in “A” Division are Hevey, Scott Heminger, and Joe D’Isidoro who have each scored 5.5 points in the first 8 weeks.
