‘America’s Tall Ship’ Returns to Portsmouth PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – The Eagle, a majestic U.S. Coast Guard training vessel known as “America’s Tall Ship,” will return to Portsmouth on Friday for the third time in nine years. Members of the Piscataqua Maritime Commission will again serve as hosts for the 300-foot barque and her crew as they arrive offshore at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2. The impressive Parade of Sail will commence at 4 p.m. as ships sail up the Piscataqua River toward the State Pier, 555 Market St. Gates will open to the viewing public at 4:30 p.m., and the Eagle is expected to arrive and dock at the main pier at 4:45 p.m. A ceremony of welcome for the Eagle will begin at 5:30 p.m.

No tours of the Eagle, the largest Tall Ship in America, will be permitted on Friday, but on Sat-

urday, Aug. 3, and Sunday, Aug. 4, guests will be welcomed from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tours are free.

It is rare that the Eagle visits a city three times in less than one decade, according to Sail Portsmouth™, the website of the Piscataqua Maritime Commission. It is speculated that the Coast Guard has an appreciation for the long maritime heritage of the area as the third oldest port in America and as the birthplace of legendary ships. The Eagle is the only actively commissioned steel hulled sailing vessel in the U.S. military. A crew of 80 Coast Guard members and a cadet trainee complement of 120, handle the ship’s 22,000 square feet of canvas, her five miles of rigging and the 200 individually named lines that control her sails. She is the seventh U.S. Navy or Coast Guard vessel to

bear the name in a line dating back to 1792. But the story of this beloved American ship actually began with her 1936 launch in Nazicontrolled German as the Horst Wessel, a name selected by Adolf Hitler. Wessel was Hitler’s favorite composer of military marches and of the Nazi national anthem. The then-Horst Wessel served as the flagship of the Kriegsmarine sail training fleet until 1939 when she was decommissioned with the onset of the war. She was recommissioned late in 1942 and equipped with anti-aircraft guns that were reportedly responsible for downing three Soviet planes and one “friendly” German aircraft in combat. vealed that a swimming complex is viable for success in York. The group is looking for support from the York Board of Selectmen and the York voters as they embark on a capital campaign. In 2006, the York voters gave approval to the Board of Selectman, allowing them to negotiate and enter into an agreement with a private group seeking to lease a portion of town-owned land on Bog Road. The purpose of the lease was to allow private construction of an indoor swimming facility. Sixty-three percent of the voters agreed. York Parks and Recreation surveyed program participants in 2010. Ninety percent of those who responded supported allocating town resources to a community swimming pool. In addition, 79 percent supported the construction of a multi-purpose recreation center. “These results clearly indicate support for a project such as the we are proposing,” stated Julie Edminster, vice president of the Friends group. A private group recently

received a letter of support from the Dover City Council and Dover City Manager to move ahead with a $16 million capital campaign for a 50-meter swimming pool on city-owned property, Edminster noted. “We are asking the same thing of York Selectmen and the York voters. A petition to place a question on the November referendum regarding the Bog Road parcel of land is coming,” affirmed Edminster. The Phase I plans for the center include a warm water recreation pool with a slide, current, zero-depth entry, and play structures for children. The rec See RECREATION page 12...

YORK – York Public Library will conclude its Summer Family Fun Series on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m. with a performance of “Mad Science of Maine” at Village Elementary School, 124 York St. The performances have been supported by a grant from Kennebunk Savings Bank and the use of York Schools’ facilities. “Mad Science of Maine” offers live science shows designed to instill both a clear sense of how science works and how it affects the world. Since its founding in 1996, “Mad Science” has sent out teams of science enthusiasts, trained by a certified science teacher, to showcase the magic of science. Whether conjuring foggy dry ice storms, creating a working foam factory, or demonstrating what’s at the center of the earth, “Mad Science” remains true to both the field of science.

Trolley Museum and Conservation Trust Form Alliance

KENNEBUNKPORT – A new relationship between Seashore Trolley Museum and Kennebunkport Conservation Trust was recently forged. Lisa Lassey, associate director of KCT, boarded a vintage streetcar with her children and dogs for a 1.4 mile ride on Seashore’s private railway to Seashore’s “Talbott Park,”

where they will disembarked for a hiking experience. Members of the press were invited to join in on the trolley ride and hike with the Lassey family and Seashore’s executive director, Sally Bates. From Talbott Park, Seashore Trolley Museum’s rail right-of-way offers easy access to Kennebunk-

port Conservation Trust’s Edwin L. Smith Preserve trail system. Hikers who choose to disembark at Talbott Park can return to catch a later scheduled trolley back to Seashore’s visitor center. Until now, visitors were not given the option of leaving the trolley at the Talbott Park loop. According to Bates, “We are excited to extend the use of our vin-

Book lovers might recognize Bennett from the novel “Bel Canto.” Author Ann Patchett has said Bennett provided the inspiration for the lead character in the book. In the music world, Bennett has been hailed by The New York Times for her “sumptuous sound, wrenching poignancy, and faultless musicianship.” Her honors include the Pro Musicis International Award, an artistic ambassadorship, and a fellowship at Radcliffe College’s Bunting Institute. AnnuAl CleAning serviCe speCiAl Hospice brings hope of a quality life York Hospital Hospice provides exceptional care and personalized attention to patients facing life limiting illness and their families. If you, or someone you know, are struggling with disease related pain or other symptoms that are not well managed, perhaps now is the time to discuss hospice as a care option. Hospice care focuses on quality of life. It provides humane and compassionate care for patients so that they can enjoy life as fully and comfortably as possible. The hospice philosophy accepts death as the final stage of life; it affirms life and neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice treats the person, not the disease, working to manage symptoms so that a person’s last months or days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by the people and things they love. Hospice is also family centered – it includes the patient and family in all decisions. The hallmark of hospice is the interdisciplinary team of highly skilled physicians, nurses, counselors, chaplains, home care aides, and volunteers that together coordinates and provides all care. From our York, Maine office located at 127 Long Sands Road, York Hospital Hospice will provide comprehensive pain and symptom management, support and counseling to patients, and bereavement, spiritual and volunteer services to families and loved ones. York Hospital Hospice is one of the largest not-for-profit hospices in the region. Our staff has the skill and experience to provide the highest level of expert end-of-life care that patients and families in the York Maine region need and deserve. York Hospital Hospice is widely recognized as superior by both medical professionals and by families who have shared the hospice experience. Museum Librarian-Archivist to Retire in August YORK – Virginia S. “Ginny” Spiller, long-time librarian and archivist at Museums of Old York, recently announced her retirement after 35 years of service. During Spiller’s tenure, she saw many important changes come to the town and to the museum, and she became an authority for genealogical research in our community. As Spiller recounts her Old York experience, “In 1977 Michel Ulm asked me to volunteer for the food committee with her planning the proposed new education program for York stu-

dents, Living History. I assisted in this program by researching individuals living in York in 1790. “We created files for the children to learn about 1790 York residents. Later, I assisted in the hearth-cooking program with Florence Lord’s regional food ways program. “In the 1980s, the merger of Historic Landmarks and Old Gaol Museum required some shuffling which left the George Marshall store first floor a library and second floor offices. I became the librarian/ archivist. Thus the library and Old York became a part of our family life.”

United Way of York County Receives Grant for Volunteer Reader Project KENNEBUNK – United Way of York County recently received a $8,392 grant from the York County Children’s Aid Society Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to support early childhood literacy with a Volunteer Reader Project. Volunteer Reader training will take place at the Kennebunk Free Library on Monday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m. “This grant will allow us to embark on a new volunteer project that supports early literacy throughout York County,” said Meaghan Arzberger, manager of volunteer engagement at United Way. “There has been an enormous interest in increasing literacy levels at an early age at the national level, and we hope that the Volunteer Reader project will be one more resource for York County children. We hope to recruit 25 volunteer readers in

the first year.” The York County Volunteer Center at United Way was founded in 1991 to increase community involvement in addressing community needs. The volunteer center holds days of service throughout the year as well as individual volunteer referrals. With offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people. Why Do We Need Fiber? Many food products boast added fiber on their packaging. Breads, cookies, beverages, and so much more contain extra fiber in response to the public’s growing desire to consume foods with high levels of dietary fiber, which medical professionals claim is an essential element to a healthy diet. Despite that publicity, many consumers remain in the dark about the role fiber plays in the body. About Fiber Many people are aware of the importance of including fiber in the diet, but few people understand the importance of dietary fiber. Fiber is an essentially indigestible substance that is found mainly in the outer layers of plants. Fiber will pass through the human digestive system virtually unchanged from when it was consumed and without being broken down into nutrients. Fiber is classified into two types: insoluble fiber, which will not dissolve in water, and soluble fiber, which can be dissolved. Insoluble fiber

is typically found in whole grain products, dark leafy vegetables, green beans, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, and skins of fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber comes from foods like oats, nuts, fruits, and dried beans. Fiber and Digestion Fiber is essential to digestion. The Harvard School of Medical Health advises people should get between 20 to 30 grams of fiber each day, though many people do not consume that much fiber. Fiber adds bulk in the digestive system, which helps soften stool and flush out the intestines. It assists in making bowel movements more frequent, preventing constipation. A diet high in fiber helps reduce the risk for hemorrhoids and diverticular disease. Fiber and Weight Loss While fiber is often associated with improving regularity, that is not its only role. Fiber, particularly soluble fiber that can be slowly digested, will prolong the digestive process, helping to keep the stomach fuller longer.

Feeling full can help a person eat healthy portions. Fiber-rich foods are also less calorie-dense. This means you can eat more and feel fuller without consuming tons of calories. Increasing fiber consumption may help men and women looking to lose weight. Fiber and Blood Sugar The slow absorption of carbohydrates also regulates the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This can prevent sugar spikes that may be dangerous to those with diabetes. It also may be able to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2000. Fiber and Cholesterol Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol concentrations by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol and bile acids in the small intestines. When less bile acid is absorbed, the body must use stored cholesterol to make more, lowering blood cholesterol as a result. The American Heart Association reports greater reductions in low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol among people who consume diets high in soluble fiber compared to diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol alone. How to Increase Fiber While many products include added fiber, here are some of the best ways to increase the number of grams of fiber consumed on a daily basis. * Eat more bran, as bran has the highest fiber content of any food at about 25 to 45 percent.

* Consume whole fruit instead of juice. Whole fruits have more fiber in them and fewer calories than juices. Eating fruit can help you to feel fuller longer. * Pass up on refined flours. Opt for whole grains whenever eating bread, cereal and baked goods. Try to aim for grains that have at least three grams of fiber per serving. * Increase your consumption of beans. Beans are relatively inexpensive, filling and tasty. Plus, they pack a great deal of

fiber, protein and other important nutrients. * Take a fiber supplement if you feel you are not getting enough fiber in your daily diet. Gummy fiber chews can be tasty ways to get fiber. * Opt for fresh fruit and vegetables for snacks over processed foods. These articles are provided by MetroCreative. Health & Fitness ~ News ~

Keeping Weight Off Once It’s Gone Losing weight can be a life-changing event. For some men and women, the desire to lose weight is largely cosmetic, while others must lose weight for medical reasons. Regardless of the reason behind a person’s desire to lose weight, setting and achieving such a goal is an accomplishment to be proud of. As difficult as losing weight can be, men and women often find it even more difficult to keep that weight off once it’s gone. But maintaining a healthy weight does not have to be so difficult, especially when people can apply the same effort and discipline to keeping weight off that they did to losing weight. The following

are a few additional tips to help men and women maintain a healthy weight. * Exercise daily. Exercise plays a significant role in many people’s weight-loss efforts, and men and women should continue to emphasize exercise as they work to maintain their weight loss. An exercise regimen that helped you lose weight can be just as effective as you work to keep that weight off. Aerobic and strength-training exercise can help men and women maintain a healthy weight while reducing their risk for various diseases, including heart disease. Strength training exercise can be especially important for men and women as they age, as such

exercise helps maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. * Continue to monitor eating habits. Once the weight has been lost, that does not mean you can return to your pre-weight loss diet. After those excess pounds have disappeared, continue to watch what you eat, avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugar. In addition, continue to control your food portions to avoid overindulging. Portion control can go a long way toward helping men and women keep weight off, and how much you eat should be considered nearly as important as what you’re eating. * Enlist the help of others.

Many people enlist the help of family and friends as they attempt to lose weight. Immediate family members, in particular, tend to play a significant role in such efforts, acting as a daily support system and even, on occasion, serving as the “food police” when men and women veer off course of their healthy diets. Such support can be just as valuable as you work to maintain your weight loss. If you worked out on the buddy system on your way to losing weight, continue to do so. If your family adopted a healthy diet to help make things easier on you during your weightloss efforts, continue to eat such healthy foods as a family, which can only pay dividends for everyone in the long run. * Expect some setbacks, but don’t accept them. Just like there

were setbacks on your road to losing weight, there will be setbacks as you try to maintain that weight loss. Such setbacks are to be expected, but they’re much easier to accept when you’re already at a healthy weight than they were when you were overweight. But when you accept setbacks and don’t work to avoid more, all that hard work losing weight could end up being for naught. Don’t beat yourself up if you gain some of the weight back, but if you do, assess how it happened and work to address any issues that might have led to that weight gain. business & finance Professionals are Downshifting careers

Climbing the corporate ladder takes time, devotion and ambition. After reaching the top, some professionals choose to change directions in a phenomenon called “downshifting.” A 2009 publication from the AARP Public Policy Institute noted that many older workers, as they approach retirement age, are looking to trade in a higher-paying, demanding job for one with more flexibility, less responsibility and lower pay. A study by the University of Michigan for the National Institute on Aging’s Health

and Retirement Study found 28.8 percent of males and 24.3 percent of females ages 51 to 55 changed careers after age 50. In the current economy, this downshifting or career reassessment can be difficult to come by. That’s because there are many other job-seekers who are interested in any position they can get and will be vying for the lower-paying jobs that some downshifters may also be seeking. In addition, some firms won’t consider applicants whom they deem overqualified. Some human resources departments and recruiters simply overlook high-qualified applicants be-

cause they may assume the skill level also comes with a need for a high salary – even if this is not the case. There are others who are willing to take the gamble on a well-qualified applicant. They realize that this opportunity may not come again if the market rebounds. Those who are looking to downshift may have to change the ways they market themselves. It may not entail listing your most notable achievements on your resume, but rather selling yourself a little short. Here are some tips you can employ if you’re looking to scale back your job and responsibilities.

* Apply at smaller companies that may not have the staff or resources to promote from within just yet. There’s a good chance your experience and leadership abilities will be prized in such a company. * Play up your assets, not the positions you have held, on resumes. * Be honest in your cover letter, letting hiring managers know you are serious about taking a step back in rank. * Consider freelancing or consulting if you’re having trouble finding a full-time gig. Freelancing lets you set your own hours and pace. * Find out if you can down-

shift in your current company. Some employers will be anxious to keep a good worker and see the benefit in paying a lower salary. Not everyone is interested in moving up the corporate ladder. Certain individuals are looking to downsize their jobs to gain more flexibility for family, hobbies and other pursuits. These articles are provided by MetroCreative. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have recently discovered a problem with trying to delete icons on my Windows Explorer page, I am using Windows 7 ultimate. When I try to highlight the icons I want deleted I first of all start highlighting the icons while holding down the control button, the first two or three will highlight then when I press the next icon the first or second highlight disappears. I just can’t get a continuous list to form. I can do them one at a time but I know I shouldn’t have to and it takes up way too much time, I know this is possible because I have done it before for many years, is it a glitch with Windows 7? Thank you for your help, Mary Dear Mary, This is not a glitch in Windows 7 that I have heard of, and when I tried the steps you outlined on my Windows 7 computer, all the files stayed highlighted. My conclusion is that there is either a hardware issue happening here, or you have a problem with your Windows installation. If this is a laptop you are using, I wonder if you might be accidentally brushing the touchpad while selecting icons. Sometimes a touchpad can be extremely sensitive. There could also be a problem with your Ctrl key. Perhaps it is not maintaining a connection when you hold it down for long periods of time. Try using the other Ctrl key on your keyboard, or periodically release and then repress the Ctrl key as you are making your selections. If you want to select a long list of icons in a row, click on the top one, then hold down

the shift key and click on the bottom one. All the icons between the two will be highlighted. One last thing, be sure you are not leaning on your keyboard in any way. Sometimes we can accidentally lean on the keyboard without realizing that we are pressing a key. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a subscriber to your newsletter for many, many years and still enjoy it and use it to my advantage very much. I finally had to buy a new computer, its got win8. I am very unhappy with the industry since my older programs do not work on win8 and there appears to be no updates for them. Now I’m an old woman – 74 years old. I come from self-taught DOS so I’ve come a long, long way. So many people have helped me and your newsletter (thank you very much) has helped along the way also. So back to win8. My old programs I’m speaking of I’ve used for 10-plus years. I love them and I see no reason to have to BUY newer versions or programs when the ones I have and learned inside out and backwards be discarded. I love them and use them often. Print Shop v6.0 and Jasc Paint Shop Pro are the two I am referring to. Guess what, they do not work on win8 at all. I used the two above-mentioned programs with Vista. Any solutions for me? Thanks so much for your newsletter and also your help. You do us all a great service. Way to go girl! Sincerely, Bess

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Occasionally, a cat we rescue tests positive for FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. The biggest challenge those cats have is not the virus itself, but the long wait they’ll have in getting a home. It’s because so many people misunderstand FIV. FIV is a slow virus that over a period of years weakens a cat’s immune system. Most FIV kitties live long, healthy lives and manifest no symptoms at all. Because of their weaker immune system, it’s wise to keep FIV kitties indoors, up-to-date on vac-

cinations, and give them highquality food. Because of their weaker immune system, they need to see the vet at the first sign of illness. If you research the virus, you’ll see that many people allow their FIV positive cats to mingle

with cats that are FIV-negative. This is a choice you should make after talking to your vet and doing your homework. FIV is spread only from cat to cat via deep bite wounds or blood transfusion, not through sharing food dishes, litter boxes or grooming. Many people with cats who are spayed/ neutered and are friendly and non-aggressive let their kitties mix successfully. In rescue work, our goal is to find a great home for each See SAFE HAVEN page 28...

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – The Animal Welfare Society recently had some very special guests. Seventeen volunteers from the rescue organization Road Trip Home visited AWS and were able to meet up adopters of many of the dogs they have rescued from shelters in Georgia and transported to Maine. They also got to watch as 13 of their transported dogs found new homes in Maine on the day of their visit. AWS staff members were able to learn all about the work of Road Trip Home and hear about the challenges they face in a state where more than 200,000 pets are euthanized every year due to pet over-population. Gino When you first meet Gino, you’ll surely notice there’s something a bit different about him. He’s got a little black coloring on one of his front legs and... oh, yeah…he’s missing his left eye. Forgot about that one. In

with other dogs, dog-savvy cats, and respectful children of all ages. If this one-eyed wonder sounds like the perfect dog for you, then stop on by the shelter today to meet Gino.

Gino (courtesy photo)

all seriousness, little Gino here did have an old injury which necessitated removing his eye, but it hasn’t slowed him down one bit. This 4-year-old Chihuahua is still a friendly, funny and lovable fellow. His favorite activity is simply getting quality time with his people. He enjoys cuddling so much he’ll even hold on to your arm with his paws. He would enjoy getting regular walks with his people so he can check out his neighborhood and strut his stuff. Gino’s friendly nature means he would be more than happy to share a new home

Patron Meet Patron, a very handsome 5-year-old shorthaired cat. Like several cats that have come through our shelter, Patron is FIV-positive. That means he has the feline version of HIV. Currently there is no medication or treatment for FIV. It’s merely something to be mindful

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – Meet Lulu…a 1-year-old hound looking for a nice New England family to adopt her. Lulu was rescued at the 11th hour from extremely high-rate kill facility in North Carolina. She is a gentle, easy-going, submissive puppy who loves to give kisses, go on extended walks, and just being with her family. Lulu is great with children of all ages, other household companion pets, especially cats. Lulu is current on all necessary vaccinations, spayed, and has passed her wellness exam. If you have been thinking about the possibility of adding a sweet easy-going young dog to your family, Lulu would so like to meet with you. She will be available for adoption on Saturday at the adoption center at 37 Market St. in North Berwick. You may also make an appointment during the week if Saturdays are not open hours for your family.

In addition to gentle sweet Lulu our featured pet of the week, we still have an abundance of kittens, a limited number of teen kittens, a lot of young adults, a shrinking number of adult cats and a very limited number of older kitties also asking you to consider them as new family members.

‘American Idol’ star Clay Aiken will star in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the Ogunquit Playhouse. (courtesy image)

OGUNQUIT – Ogunquit Playhouse is going Technicolor® with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s irresistible story of Joseph, his jealous brothers and one very colorful garment in a delightful musical parable that swirled on stage earlier this week and will

continue through Aug. 25. The Ogunquit production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” stars Clay Aiken as Joseph and Broadway’s Keala Settle as the Narrator. This musical follows the biblical story of Joseph, the favorite son blessed with pro-

phetic dreams, on his journey to Egypt after being sold into slavery by his brothers. The production includes the popular songs “Go, Go, Go Joseph” and “Any Dream Will Do,” performed by an all-star cast along with two groups of 20 children selected from local casting calls. Starring in the role of Joseph is multi-platinum recording artist, American Idol and Broadway star Clay Aiken. Aiken garnered critical acclaim for his Broadway debut as Sir Robin in the Tony Award-winning production of “Spamalot” in 2008 and 2009 and recently played Man in Chair in the North Carolina Theatre production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.” He has released several albums which have debuted in the top five on the Billboard Chart, launched 10 national concert tours, authored a New York Times best-selling memoir and has appeared on many popular television shows. Settle was most recently seen on Broadway in “Hands on a Hardbody” for which she

The roles of Reuben and The Butler will be played by Craig Laurie who has performed extensively with the hit off-Broadway show “Forbidden Broadway,” as well as in the Chicago production of “Jersey Boys” where he originated the role of Bob Crewe. Broadway veteran Bill Nolte is cast as Jacob, Potiphar and the Baker. Nolte last appeared in Ogunquit in “The Producers” and has performed in regional theaters across the country and on Broadway in many shows including “La Cage Aux Folles,” “The Producers”, “Me and My Girl,” and “Cats.” Playing the Pharaoh is Matthew Ragas who was last seen at the Ogunquit Playhouse as Warner in “Legally Blonde” with Sally Struthers. Ragas has toured the U.S. in many shows

including “Hairspray,” “Legally Blonde” and “The Wedding Singer.” The role of Levi will be played by Alex Puette who was recently seen in the First National tours of “Legally Blonde,” “Young Frankenstein” and “A Christmas Story,” as well as many off-Broadway international productions. Nicholas Ward returns to Ogunquit to play Judah where he was last seen in “Smokey Joe’s Café.” He has performed in the national and international tours of “Showboat,” “Porgy and Bess,” “Ragtime” and “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Ogunquit Playhouse Associate Producer Jayme McDaniel helms the production as director and choreographer. ARUNDEL – “All Shook Up,” a high-energy juke box musical featuring favorite Elvis Presley hits including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Teddy Bear,” “Hound Dog,” and “Love Me Tender” will be presented Aug. 6 to 17 at Arundel Barn Playhouse. Part camp, part romantic farce, this musical mimics the humor found in the romances of

Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” Performances are slated at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays. There will be additional performances on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. For information and prepaid reservations, call 207985-5552 or visit www.arundelbarnplayhouse.com.

the invention of constructed sculpture and the co-inventor of collage. Picasso’s training under his father began before he was 10 years old. A collection of young Picasso’s early works is now shown in the Museu Picasso in Barcelona which provides one of the most comprehensive records of his early works. He painted in a realistic manner through his childhood and early adolescence. By the turn of the 20th century he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense

fortune. Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughout his long lifetime. He usually painted from memory or imagination and in many styles, relying on drawing rather than subtleties of color to create form and space. In 2012, analysis of the paint used in some of his drawings confirmed what some historians believed – that he often used common house paint in many of his drawings. “Picasso: Biography & Primitive Soul” will be shown on a wall-size screen with discussion led by members of the Ogunquit Art Association.

Hackmatack Theater Campers to Present ‘SchoolHouse Rock’ BERWICK – The Hackmatack Children’s Theater Camp will present “SchoolHouse Rock LIVE! Jr.” on Fridays and Saturdays, Aug. 2, 3, 9, and 10, at 10 a.m. Educational cartoon shorts will come to life on stage with familiar songs such as “Conjunction Junction,” “Interplanet Janet,” and “I’m Just a Bill.” As a new teacher, played by Hannah Therrien of Berwick, frets over her first day of school, the ideas in her head come to life. Those ideas are played by Caylie Cocola-Pope, Kiersten Rylee Jones, and Maggie Morneault, all of Berwick, Ava Magoon of South Berwick, and Chloe Moretti of Eliot, and they remind her learning must be fun. These characters are joined by an enthusiastic that includes Vivian Burnham and Pascale Parent of South Berwick, Alexis Dow of Kennebunk, Hyla E. Fitchett and Mikayla Smith of Berwick, Ashtin Gagnon of Rochester, N.H., Sidney Gosselin and Olivia Upton of North Berwick, Peter and Sarah McTague of Epping, N.H., and A. Noelle

Campers rehearse for five weeks, Monday through Friday, and then present a fully staged production. They practice theater technique through games, as well as blocking, choreography, and music

rehearsals. Campers participate in the painting of their set, decoration of the stage and props, and often contribute to the development of their characters’ costumes, hair, and makeup. Ticket prices for “SchoolHouse Rock LIVE! Jr.” are $10 for adults, and $6 for students. All shows are at The Hackmatack Playhouse, 538 School St. in Berwick.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ ...COMPUTER from page29 Dear Bess, I do feel your pain. I have invested years in programs that work great, only to find that they have been discontinued, or no longer work with newer operating systems. Unfortunately, this is part of the technology world that we live in. What can you do? With your print shop program, you will probably just have to purchase a newer version of the program. Put it on your birthday or Christmas list for those family members who are wondering what to get you. As far as the Paint Shop Pro program, I loved that program as well, and was disappointed when it was bought by another company. I searched high and low looking for another program to replace it

with, not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on a program. I have ended up using Gimp, which is a free, open source graphics program. Because it is open source, it will always be free to use, and it is a work in progress, which means there are always improvements being made, and it will be updated to work with new operating systems as they come along. You can learn more about Gimp, and download your own copy at: www.gimp.org. I hope this helps you with your graphics needs. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do you clean up all the accumulated spam messages in Gmail? Do they take up extra space? I am concerned since my computer works so slow at times.

Thanks in advance. Judith Dear Judith, First, I want to say that I think Gmail does the best job of filtering out spam messages that I have seen. At this point, I use Gmail to access all my e-mail, and I am rarely bothered by spam any more. Fortunately for you and I, Gmail automatically cleans up accumulated spam messages by automatically deleting messages in the spam folder that are more than 30 days old. If you want to manually delete some of the messages in the spam folder, you would click on that folder in the column on the left of your Gmail window, then select and delete the messages just like your regular inbox messages.

Since Gmail is webbased, having a lot of messages saved in your Gmail account will not slow your computer down. Elizabeth

Dear Roni, It sounds like you used to have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, and now after recovering your computer to its original configuration, you no longer have Office installed. ...AWS from page 29 ful of. Patron can live for many happy years, but he just should not share a home with other cats unless they are also FIV-positive. He is perfectly fine to be around people or other animals. In fact, he really loves being around people. Patron is a social fellow and likes to sit in laps and cuddle with people. Patron is no wallflower and readily seeks attention. His friendly nature makes him an ideal addition to practically any home looking for an affectionate, cuddly companion. ...SAFE HAVEN from page 29

kitty. Those that test positive for FIV deserve as much a chance at a happy home as any other. To encourage the adoption of FIV+ kitties, Safe Haven waives the adoption fee. Interested in meeting two of these cats? Call 207-229-8314. Both are in foster homes and ready for a permanent home. Wendell is an awesome 5 year-old FIV-positive cat rescued by a couple who couldn’t stand seeing this lovely stray wandering outside hungry. Because they had other cats, they felt it best to surrender him to a no-kill organization. Save Haven placed him in foster care, where Wendell has proven to be a loving and healthy kitty. His foster mom says Wendell

make for a welcome addition to practically any home. If you’d like to adopt Gonzo then stop on by the shelter today to meet him.

Gonzo Gonzo may have a goofy name, but he’s really a down-toearth rabbit. Gonzo is an adult mixed breed who can’t wait to find himself a new home. Gonzo would love to have a habitat filled with all the typical rabbit necessities, and maybe some not-so-necessary luxuries. He’d also enjoy getting regular attention to keep him happy and healthy. really must go to a home where they let him sleep with them. He snuggles every night. Wendell is beautiful, with a long buff-and-cream coat and little black dot on his nose. He has a wonderful appetite, is very healthy, lives very comfortably with another FIV-positive kitty, a dog and people of all ages, and just can’t get enough love. He would love a home with a screened-in porch. Despite his FIV, he needs no special diet or medications. All he wants is love. He uses his scratching post and his foster mom says he’s never scratched her furniture. Chase was a stray living on Atlantic Avenue in Wells. A wonderful woman rescued him and unfortunately he, too, tested positive for

FIV. She contacted Safe Haven and Chase entered our foster program. He won the heart of his foster mom who adores him very much. Chase is a beautiful black-and-white tuxedo kitty, 4 to 5 years old, hungry for affection. Chase is very healthy, takes no medications, has a great appetite, and wants nothing more than to climb up on your lap and stand on his hind legs to hug you with his front paws. His devoted foster mom says he’s an amazing cat. “He’s so adaptable, he’ll fit right into your life. He’s hungry for love and certainly deserves it.” Many times we’ve found FIV kitties are very affectionate and thankful. They respond to the love and comfort they receive, and give back so much more.

Team will visit PetSmart at Biddeford Crossing with adoptable dogs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17: The AWS Mobile Adoption Team and the Spay Neuter Outreach Team will be at Tractor Supply on Main Street, Sanford, to celebrate the PetFinder Nationwide Adoption Event from
