Wells Chamber of Commerce to Serve Up Annual Chili-Fest

WELLS – The Wells Chamber of Commerce will host its Annual Chili-Fest on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25, at the Wells Junior High School on Route 1 in Wells. The event is scheduled from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. This traditional late summer event, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is among the last events available for “chiliheads” to qualify

to compete in the World Championship, which will be held this year on Oct. 11 to 13 in Palm Springs, Calif. Entrants in past events have come from as far away as Florida, Nevada and Illinois. “We are going to a two-day event this year,” noted Eleanor Vadenais, executive director of the Wells Chamber. The chili event was a single day for the past four years, she said. “But we added the second

day this year to do a memorial event for Joe Harvey,” Vadenais added. The “Joe Harvey Memorial” Cook-Off on Saturday, Aug. 24, honors longtime head judge Joe Harvey, who passed away in August of 2011. Competition on Sunday, Aug. 25, will feature the “Maine State Cook-Off.” Both events will feature cooks in three categories: red See CHILI page 2...

Living History Encampment of the 1600s Planned at Museum SOUTH BERWICK – An outdoor “living history” presentation of a colonial encampment at the time of King William’s War in the late 1600s will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the town’s riverfront museum and park. “This is a family event for all concerned,” said Paula Ben-

The society is sponsoring the event at their museum, the Counting House, to coincide with the 300th anniversary year of the establishment of Berwick, comprising the towns of South Berwick, North Berwick and Berwick of today. Bennett said the participants, led by veteran re-enactor Ken Hamilton, will demonstrate arts and crafts, regulation musket drills, cooking, camp

life, and colonial children’s games. Historical reproduction artifacts, including many depicting Native American folkways, will be on display throughout the site. “This is an easy and fun way to teach history because the public will witness the sights, smells and sounds of the era,” Bennett added. ~ News ~ Hood Blimp Docks at Sanford Airport SANFORD – The Hood Blimp, docked at the Sanford Airport, arrived in the area this week to film the Sidewalk Festival in Portland. Mats Backlin, chief flight pilot of the Hood Blimp, said Sanford Airport is the most suitable local airport for the blimp because it holds the free space needed for the craft. He also cited the support the crew receives from Southern Maine Aviation, which is based at the airport. The Hood Blimp, which is under contract with the Red Sox, is able to travel when the team is playing away games. This week the crew will be traveling over the coast and to Portland to film the festival and some baseball games being played in Portland. The Hood Blimp is manned 24 hours a day because the blimp itself has no internal frame and needs to stay at a constant pressure. As the helium inflates and deflates with heat and cold personnel needs to be on hand to regulate that inner pressure. The Hood Blimp is easily seen from Southern Maine Aviation’s patio when it is docked along taxiway Delta. The public is welcome to come and take photos.

OGUNQUIT – The Ogunquit Heritage Museum at 86 Obeds Lane will host two lectures in the next month. On Aug. 27 at 7 p.m., Chris and Peter Woodbury will present a talk with slides about their grandparents, Charles Woodbury and Marcia Oakes Woodbury. Charles Woodbury founded the famous art school in Perkins Cove in 1898. There, until 1940, he taught “plein air” techniques and offered a six-week course in painting and drawing from nature. For some of that time his wife, an accomplished artist in her own right, worked beside him. The Woodbury School has been called one of the most successful of the summer art colony schools. With visual images, the Woodbury brothers will offer a glimpse of that rich artistic period in Ogunquit’s history. Woodbury worked with very talented students, some of whom, like Gertrude Fiske, Edward Henry Potthast, Joseph Davol and Susan Ricker Knox, became well known in their own careers. The museum’s second lecture and discussion will be presented on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

KENNEBUNK – Residents of Atria Kennebunk recently participated in a five-hour trip at sea on Nick’s Chance Whale Watch Tours out of Dock Square in Kennebunkport. Capt. Gary Grenier spoke of the history of the surrounding area along with information about local fisheries. On the way out to Jeffery’s Ledge, the residents spotted a minke whale and about 30 minutes later, they came across an entire pod of finbacks.

King William’s War, when French and Native war parties attacked English settlers in the area of today’s South Berwick, then known as Quamphegan. Among the other homes believed destroyed in such a raid was that of Thomas Holmes, whose mill stood at Quamphegan falls near the site of the living history presentation. “We will interpret a military flying camp as well as the native fur trade, fishing and hunting culture of the ‘half Indianized’ French and ‘half Frenchified’ Indians,” Hamilton explained. He said today’s South Berwick and Rollinsford, N.H., on both sides of the Salmon Falls, were once a Wabanaki or “East/Dawn Land” center for seasonal habitation, fishing, and canoe travel. English colonization and settlement forever altered the traditional access and use of this important area. During the late 1600s and early 1700s, the English residents of the Berwicks, then called Newichawannock, adapted to a world dominated by a struggling economy, food shortages, rumors of Wabanaki and French attacks, militia call ups, and life in garrison. Wabanaki and French forces attacked Berwick on several occasions, the most devastating taking place in 1676 and 1690. “European wars between the English and French then gave the displaced descendants of the original Native families the opportunity to ally with the French and retaliate against the loss of this important part of their original homeland and its resources (critical during fish runs, canoe routes and portages), and avenge grievances against the vulnerable, remote English settlements and habitations,” Hamilton said. As a natural water/canoe highway system, the area’s connecting rivers, lakes and bays made Quamphegan both a natural/automatic target and “pit stop” for French invasions and raiding parties, especially when the rivers froze. French raiders were accompanied by “local” Native guides. Raids on the area in March 1690 and on Haverhill in August 1708 were led by a Frenchman named Hertel de Rouville. He formerly led congregations in New Rochelle, N.Y., and Lexington, Ky. Farber, who became a cantor in 1990, has participated in the Ogunquit services since 1994. The services were established 50 years ago by Sylvia Rubin. A member of the York

Clergy Association, Farber has served as rabbi/cantor since 1996 at a Jewish nursing home in Chelsea, Mass., where she serves patients in the facility’s three separate divisions of care. Cantor Farber also leads a monthly Chavra on Fridays in the homes of area residents. The services, which are open to all, regardless of religion, are followed by a potluck dinner and discussion. Farber is also a clergy volunteer at York Hospital.

One-Man Show to Feature Works of Bob Hastie WELLS – A free reception for an art show featuring the work of Bob Hastie is set at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at Wells Public Library. Hastie grew up in Watertown, Mass., and displayed his artistic abilities at an early age, winning a scholarship to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts

LePage Sends Maine Lobster to 49 Governors

AUGUSTA – In an effort to promote Maine lobster, as well as the economic opportunities that would result from national attention for the industry, Maine Gov. Paul R. LePage today sent a box of Maine lobster products to the 49 other governors across the United States. “What better time than summer to share the iconic Maine lobster?” said LePage. Boxes full of prepared lobster meat and value added items, including bisques and spreads from Maine processors and dealers, were shipped overnight. “I want my friends and colleagues across the country to experience the flavor of Maine. “These items represent a small sample of products available from Maine companies that process and add value to Maine lobster, which is harvested from the pristine Gulf of Maine waters,” said LePage. “The lobster industry is vital to Maine’s economy and its identity,” said LePage. “I’m proud of the hardworking men and women who have made this one of the most lucrative industries in Maine. Last year, a record 126 million pounds were landed, generating nearly a billion dollars in economic impact to our state.” “This fishery is as healthy as it is due in large part to the sustainable harvesting practices

Free Disposal of Old Pesticides Offered for Mainers AUGUSTA – Mainers can take advantage of a free opportunity to dispose of banned or unusable pesticides that they may have in their homes or elsewhere on their properties. This October, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) will team up with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to dispose of banned pesticides or pesticides that have become caked, frozen, or otherwise rendered unusable. This free disposal program is open to homeowners, familyowned farms and greenhouses. All people need to do is register by Sept. 27. It’s not unusual for homes and farms to have unintentional hazardous waste – old or unusable pesticides sitting around in basements, garages, or barns. Old chemicals like DDT, lead arsenate, 2,4,5-T, and chlordane can be difficult and expensive to dispose of properly. While removal of these pesticides can seem daunting, it’s that everyone who gets a chance to enjoy Maine lobster will agree that, no matter how it is prepared, it is one of the best things they’ll ever taste,” said the governor. Registration by Sept. 27 is mandatory – drop-ins are not permitted. ‘Patsy Cline’ Closes Season at Arundel Playhouse

By Scott Andrews Contributing Writer ARUNDEL – It’s been 50 years since Patsy Cline, one of the most celebrated and influential female country singer of the mid-20th century, died in an airplane crash near Nashville. Adored by millions, Cline was famous for her rich voice and dramatic phrasing that expressed an unforgettable combination of passion, vulnerability and strength. Cline, born Virginia Patterson Hensley in 1933, was the first woman to become a superstar in the male-dominated field of country music, and she was one of the first female members of the Grand Ole Opry. In addition to selling records to country audiences, she also won a broader popular following via crossover hits that resonated with millions who would not normally listen to the Nashville Sound. Since her death, Cline’s legacy has continued to grow through the years, thanks to numerous re-releases of her classic Decca recordings plus books, tribute albums, biopics and documentaries. One of the most entertaining and engaging tributes is “Always...Patsy Cline,” a two-actress musical stage play that depicts the Nashville star during the last two years of her life and covers more than two dozen of her best-known songs, including “Walking After Midnight,” “I Fall To Pieces,”

Silent Comedy ‘Grandma’s Boy’ to be Shown at Leavitt Theatre OGUNQUIT – The silent film era will return to the big screen at the Leavitt Theatre in Ogunquit with the showing of a classic silent comedy accompanied by live music. Showtime is Thursday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. at the historic Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St., Route 1, Ogunquit. Admission is $10 per person. Featured will be a fulllength comedy, “Grandma’s Boy,” starring Harold Lloyd, a popular 1920s film star. The screening, the latest in the Leavitt Theatre’s silent film series, will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in creating scores for silent films. “Grandma’s Boy” tells the story a cowardly young man (Lloyd) who seeks the courage to battle a menacing tramp who terrorizes his small hometown. The picture helped establish Lloyd as a major star for the rest of the silent film era. In revival, “Grandma’s Boy” serves as a great introduction to the silent film era. It also provides a marvelous window into small-town American life as it was lived a century ago. Despite his mega-star status in the 1920s, Lloyd is largely unknown to today’s audiences, mostly because he retained control of his films in later life and refused to let them be shown on television. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Hackmatack Closes Season with ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ BERWICK – Hackmatack Playhouse is presenting its final production of the 42nd season: “Driving Miss Daisy.” “Driving Miss Daisy,” popularized by the 1989 film, explores the story of Daisy Werthan, an elderly woman who is forced to give up driving and hire a chauffeur by her son who blames her most recent car accident on her age. Booley, the son, hires Hoke Colburn, an elderly AfricanAmerican man to become the chauffeur against his mother’s wishes, and in vignettes over the course of several decades their their lives and relationships play out. Director Jeff Seabaugh, is returning to Hackmatack for his second production this summer. He earlier appeared as Capt. Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music,” and has worked as both an actor and director at the playhouse since 1987. Tinka Darling, playing the role of Daisy Werthan, has been performing at Hackmatack Playhouse since 1974, and has been known for her performances in “Oliver!“ “The King and I” and, most recently, “Boeing Boeing.” Michael Turner, playing the role of Hoke Colburn, was last seen onstage at Hackmatack Playhouse in “Big River,” playing the role of Jim. When not onstage, Michael has designed lighting for Hackmatack productions since 2006. Jay Rodger is returning for his 12th season at Hackmatack, and will be playing the role of Daisy’s son, Booley. Ensemble to Offer Concert at Wharf YORK – The Museums of Old York will present the final concert in its Five O’Clock Club Series on Friday, Aug. 23, at the John Hancock Wharf, 140 Lindsay Road, York. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Have you seen a Chromebook or Chrome box? What are they? A Chromebook is a notebook computer that runs the Chrome operating system. No Microsoft Windows or Apple operating system. A ChromeBox is the same thing, but you hook it up to a monitor like a regular tower computer. I have had a ChromeBox sitting on my shelf for a few months now. I was thinking it would probably take some time to set it up, so I kept putting it off. I finally plugged it in this week, and it took only a minute or two and I was up and running. What a nice surprise. The Chrome operating system does one thing, and it does it well. It goes online. So far this works fine for me, I hooked it up to the TV in the kitchen so that I can access the AllRecipes website while I am cooking. The only thing that I wish I could change right now, is that it goes into sleep mode rather

quickly. Every time I came back to see what the next step in the recipe was, the computer had gone to sleep and I had to wake it back up, though when I left a video playing on the webpage, it did not go to sleep. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I turned on my PC yesterday I got a message: “Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.” I inserted my recovery disk in and nothing happened, I got the same message. Trying to use your recovery disk is a good first step in trying to fix the problem, but in addition to inserting the disk and trying to start your computer, you might also need to go into the system BIOS and set it to book from the CD or DVD drive. The steps to do this are different for each computer, so I can’t give you directions. If the recovery disk works, that is great; you might get a few more years use out of the computer. But if the hard drive has failed, you are probably better off looking at a new computer. ~ Elizabeth PS: Running the recovery disk will erase your data files, so get those backed up first. Now, I am getting rid of a laptop computer. The screen is no longer good. Is there a hard drive on a laptop that can be removed before you dispose of it? I am concerned about security and have learned from somewhere that you should remove the hard drive from a computer before disposing of it for security reasons. I would appreciate your comments. ~ Gwendoline Dear Gwendoline, Yes, there is a hard drive on your laptop computer that you can either erase, or remove before you dispose of the laptop. Most laptops have fairly easy access to the hard drive. Just remove one of the small access panels on the back of the laptop and remove the hard drive. It is just about the size of a deck of cards. Occasionally, I come across a laptop where the hard drive is not easy to access, so if you can’t easily find it, google the model of your laptop and you can usually find directions for how to access the hard drive. Flora was a hard worker who always made friends wherever she worked. Her favorite job however was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She loved children and her home was always filled with her children and grandchildren. Her love throughout life was to have her family and their friends around her home. She was also a 50-year member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Adams, in 1981, by her parents, by two brothers, Stillman and Edward Pierce, and by three sisters, Mildred Hammond, Elizabeth Peniuk, and Olivia Pierce. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Sydlowski of Windham, and Susan L’Heureux and her husband, Jim, of North Berwick, and a son, Duane R. Adams, and his partner, Rosemary Swan, of Berwick, and by eight grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren, two great-greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Aug. 21 at Ocean View Cemetery in Wells. Arrangements were in the

Barbara Ellen Fernald ELIOT – Barbara Ellen Fernald, 72, of Eliot, passed away on Aug. 17 at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, N.H., with her husband and daughter by her side. Barbarba was born in Kittery on Dec. 16,1940, the daughter of Angus and Grace Stewart and lived in Eliot all of her life. She attended Eliot schools, graduating from Eliot High School in 1959. She continued

her education at Washington State Teachers College in Machias, Maine, from 1959 to 1964. Barbara loved her camp at Great East Lake and the golden retrievers she had throughout the years. She was a substitute teacher and volunteer at Eliot Elementary School for 12 years, a Girl Scout leader, treasurer of the Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the board of directors at Baran Place. A volunteer at Footprints Food Pantry since 1995, she served as the pantry’s executive from 2000 to 2013, guiding volunteers to help provide food for people in need of a helping hand. Because of Barbara, people’s lives were changed for the better. Barbara was awarded the Fabyan Drake Award as the town of Eliot’s citizen of the year for her work at Footprints. She also was honored for her work by the John F. Hill Grange in Eliot and the Kittery Rotary Club. She is survived by her husband, Roland Fernald, son Glenn Fernald, daughter Pamela Keefer, grandsons Jeremy MacRitchie, Travis Keefer, and Cole and Declan Fernald, brother James Stewart, niece Robin Stewart, and many, many friends too numerous to list. Robert J. MacDougall Jr.

YORK BEACH – Robert

J. MacDougall Jr., 60, of York Beach, and formerly of Melrose, Mass., passed away on Aug. 18.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1953, in Waltham, Mass., to the late Robert J. MacDougall and Nancy Joynt Carucci. Bobby was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1971. He later served in the Army, stationed in Germany, until his honorable discharge in 1976. Upon completing his military career, he attended Bunker Hill Community College, studying criminal justice. Bobby was employed with the Department of Corrections in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for over 20 years. After furthering his education he was employed as a longtime member of the Teamsters.

Bobby was passionate about spending time skiing and surfing with his two children and throughout the years always enjoyed outdoor adventures. He was a dedicated New England sports fan, attending many games with his family. Bobby was the beloved husband of Sandra S. MacDougall and loving father of their two sons, Casey Robert and Peter John MacDougall of Wells Beach. He was the cherished brother of Janet M. MacDougall of York Beach and Lisa MacDougall of Melrose, Mass. He was also the devoted uncle of Daniel S. Walsh, Jack-

Henry and Catey Delapena. He is also survived by uncles, aunts, many cousins and longtime friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Star of the Sea Church, 13 Church St., York, on Friday, Aug. 23, at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are in the care of the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. And speaking of the music, Rebecca Cesario, an Arundel Barn veteran actress, gives a dazzling and convincing performance in the title role. Cesario has obviously listened very carefully to Cline’s recordings and has mastered the famous star’s emotive contralto vocal style, including her distinctive inflections and phrasing. Her round face, framed in curly brown hair, closely matches vintage photos of Cline.

“We’re not trying to do an impersonation,” explained director Brian Swasey. “We’re just trying to get the stylings right.” With the aid of music director Alan Patrick Kenny, who coached her through rehearsals, Cesario has succeeded admirably. Kudos also to costumer Rheanna Oliver-Palanca. Cesario has numerous costume changes, with about a dozen classic 1960s dresses. Her most attention-getting getup was her first: a striking red cowgirl suit trimmed with fringe. I also liked Chris Rhoton’s simple set, with barn frame

timbers filling the proscenium – think of a barn within a barn – plus a very realistic kitchen corner constructed at extreme stage right. Ed Reichert leads a four-man band – called the Bodacious Bobcats – which is located at the rear of the stage, in full view of the audience.

...RENOIR from page 17 Jean Renoir, and ceramic artist Claude Renoir and grandfather of filmmaker Claude Renoir, the son of Pierre. Pierre-Auguste was first formally recognized in 1874 at the age of 33 when six of his paintings were hung in the first Impressionist exhibition. He traveled widely to study the paintings of various cultures: Algeria, Madrid, Florence. In 1882 Renoir met the composer Richard Wagner at his home in Palermo, Sicily, where it is said that he painted the composer’s portrait in 35 minutes. In 1883 he spent the summer in Guernsey where he painted 15 paintings in a little over a month. From Guernsey, he moved to France, the Montmartre section, where he met and studied the works of many of his fellow painters. He married Aline Victorine

Charigot who had served as a model for his works and with whom he already had a child, Pierre (1885). After his marriage, he painted many scenes of his wife, children and their nurse in daily family life. Renoir developed rheumatoid arthritis in 1892 and moved to a warmer climate near the Mediterranean coast. He continued painting during the last 20 years of his life, even though arthritis and other physical deformities limited his movement and he was wheelchair bound. In 1919, Renoir visited the Louvre to see his paintings hanging with those of the old masters; he died Dec. 3 of that year. “The Impressionists: Renoir” will be shown on a full wall-size screen with discussion led by members of the Ogunquit Art Association.
