Wells Chamber of Commerce to Serve Up Annual Chili-Fest

WELLS – The Wells Chamber of Commerce will host its Annual Chili-Fest on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25, at the Wells Junior High School on Route 1 in Wells. The event is scheduled from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. This traditional late summer event, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is among the last events available for “chiliheads” to qualify
to compete in the World Championship, which will be held this year on Oct. 11 to 13 in Palm Springs, Calif. Entrants in past events have come from as far away as Florida, Nevada and Illinois. “We are going to a two-day event this year,” noted Eleanor Vadenais, executive director of the Wells Chamber. The chili event was a single day for the past four years, she said. “But we added the second
day this year to do a memorial event for Joe Harvey,” Vadenais added. The “Joe Harvey Memorial” Cook-Off on Saturday, Aug. 24, honors longtime head judge Joe Harvey, who passed away in August of 2011. Competition on Sunday, Aug. 25, will feature the “Maine State Cook-Off.” Both events will feature cooks in three categories: red See CHILI page 2...
Living History Encampment of the 1600s Planned at Museum SOUTH BERWICK – An outdoor “living history” presentation of a colonial encampment at the time of King William’s War in the late 1600s will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the town’s riverfront museum and park. “This is a family event for all concerned,” said Paula Ben-

nett, program chair of the Old Berwick Historical Society, adding that re-enactors will travel here from around New England and eastern Canada. The society is sponsoring the event at their museum, the Counting House, to coincide with the 300th anniversary year of the establishment of Berwick, comprising the towns of South Berwick, North Berwick and Berwick of today. Bennett said the participants, led by veteran re-enactor Ken Hamilton, will demonstrate arts and crafts, regulation musket drills, cooking, camp
life, and colonial children’s games. Historical reproduction artifacts, including many depicting Native American folkways, will be on display throughout the site. “This is an easy and fun way to teach history because the public will witness the sights, smells and sounds of the era,” Bennett added. The program is free to all ages and presentations will be held rain or shine. Counting House Park on Liberty Street, along the Salmon Falls River, is See HISTORY page 6...

~ News ~ Hood Blimp Docks at Sanford Airport SANFORD – The Hood Blimp, docked at the Sanford Airport, arrived in the area this week to film the Sidewalk Festival in Portland. Mats Backlin, chief flight pilot of the Hood Blimp, said Sanford Airport is the most suitable local airport for the blimp because it holds the free space needed for the craft. He also cited the support the crew receives from Southern Maine Aviation, which is based at the airport. The Hood Blimp, which is under contract with the Red Sox, is able to travel when the team is playing away games. This week the crew will be traveling over the coast and to Portland to film the festival and some baseball games being played in Portland. The Hood Blimp is manned 24 hours a day because the blimp itself has no internal frame and needs to stay at a constant pressure. As the helium inflates and deflates with heat and cold personnel needs to be on hand to regulate that inner pressure. The Hood Blimp is easily seen from Southern Maine Aviation’s patio when it is docked along taxiway Delta. The public is welcome to come and take photos.

OGUNQUIT – The Ogunquit Heritage Museum at 86 Obeds Lane will host two lectures in the next month. On Aug. 27 at 7 p.m., Chris and Peter Woodbury will present a talk with slides about their grandparents, Charles Woodbury and Marcia Oakes Woodbury. Charles Woodbury founded the famous art school in Perkins Cove in 1898. There, until 1940, he taught “plein air” techniques and offered a six-week course in painting and drawing from nature. For some of that time his wife, an accomplished artist in her own right, worked beside him. The Woodbury School has been called one of the most successful of the summer art colony schools. With visual images, the Woodbury brothers will offer a glimpse of that rich artistic period in Ogunquit’s history. Woodbury worked with very talented students, some of whom, like Gertrude Fiske, Edward Henry Potthast, Joseph Davol and Susan Ricker Knox, became well known in their own careers. The museum’s second lecture and discussion will be presented on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

King William’s War, when French and Native war parties attacked English settlers in the area of today’s South Berwick, then known as Quamphegan. Among the other homes believed destroyed in such a raid was that of Thomas Holmes, whose mill stood at Quamphegan falls near the site of the living history presentation. “We will interpret a military flying camp as well as the native fur trade, fishing and hunting culture of the ‘half Indianized’ French and ‘half Frenchified’ Indians,” Hamilton explained. He said today’s South Berwick and Rollinsford, N.H., on both sides of the Salmon Falls, were once a Wabanaki or “East/Dawn Land” center for seasonal habitation, fishing, and canoe travel. English colonization and settlement forever altered the traditional access and use of this important area. During the late 1600s and early 1700s, the English residents of the Berwicks, then called Newichawannock, adapted to a world dominated by a struggling economy, food shortages, rumors of Wabanaki and French attacks, militia call ups, and life in garrison. Wabanaki and French forces attacked Berwick on several occasions, the most devastating taking place in 1676 and 1690. “European wars between the English and French then gave the displaced descendants of the original Native families the opportunity to ally with the French and retaliate against the loss of this important part of their original homeland and its resources (critical during fish runs, canoe routes and portages), and avenge grievances against the vulnerable, remote English settlements and habitations,” Hamilton said. As a natural water/canoe highway system, the area’s connecting rivers, lakes and bays made Quamphegan both a natural/automatic target and “pit stop” for French invasions and raiding parties, especially when the rivers froze. French raiders were accompanied by “local” Native guides. Raids on the area in March 1690 and on Haverhill in August 1708 were led by a Frenchman named Hertel de Rouville. Retreating French and Native raiders from the Haverhill attack set up a rear guard counter ambush on pursuing militia at the Salmon Falls bridge. More information on the living history event and all the society’s programs is available by calling 207-384-0000, writing info@oldberwick.org, or logging on to www.oldberwick. org.

LePage Sends Maine Lobster to 49 Governors
AUGUSTA – In an effort to promote Maine lobster, as well as the economic opportunities that would result from national attention for the industry, Maine Gov. Paul R. LePage today sent a box of Maine lobster products to the 49 other governors across the United States. “What better time than summer to share the iconic Maine lobster?” said LePage. Boxes full of prepared lobster meat and value added items, including bisques and spreads from Maine processors and dealers, were shipped overnight. “I want my friends and colleagues across the country to experience the flavor of Maine. “These items represent a small sample of products available from Maine companies that process and add value to Maine lobster, which is harvested from the pristine Gulf of Maine waters,” said LePage. “The lobster industry is vital to Maine’s economy and its identity,” said LePage. “I’m proud of the hardworking men and women who have made this one of the most lucrative industries in Maine. Last year, a record 126 million pounds were landed, generating nearly a billion dollars in economic impact to our state.” “This fishery is as healthy as it is due in large part to the sustainable harvesting practices

pioneered by Maine lobstermen,” added the governor. “These longstanding practices are why the Maine lobster fishery earned the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council’s sustainability certification this past year.” “Maine lobster is not just a Maine product, it’s a U.S. product,” said LePage. “Eighty-five
percent of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, so I also see this as an opportunity to encourage my colleagues to support a strong U.S. economy.” In addition to the lobster products, the governor included recipes and informational material from the Maine Lobster Promotional Council. “I’m sure
Free Disposal of Old Pesticides Offered for Mainers AUGUSTA – Mainers can take advantage of a free opportunity to dispose of banned or unusable pesticides that they may have in their homes or elsewhere on their properties. This October, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) will team up with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to dispose of banned pesticides or pesticides that have become caked, frozen, or otherwise rendered unusable. This free disposal program is open to homeowners, familyowned farms and greenhouses. All people need to do is register by Sept. 27. It’s not unusual for homes and farms to have unintentional hazardous waste – old or unusable pesticides sitting around in basements, garages, or barns. Old chemicals like DDT, lead arsenate, 2,4,5-T, and chlordane can be difficult and expensive to dispose of properly. Registration by Sept. 27 is mandatory – drop-ins are not permitted. To register or for details about the temporary storage and transportation of obsolete pesticides, go to the BPC website at thinkfirstspraylast.org, or call 207-287-2731. The Maine Obsolete Pesticides Collection Program, jointly sponsored by the BPC and DEP, and paid for entirely through pesticide product registration fees, has kept more than 90 tons of pesticides out of the waste stream since its start in 1982.

‘Patsy Cline’ Closes Season at Arundel Playhouse
By Scott Andrews Contributing Writer ARUNDEL – It’s been 50 years since Patsy Cline, one of the most celebrated and influential female country singer of the mid-20th century, died in an airplane crash near Nashville. Adored by millions, Cline was famous for her rich voice and dramatic phrasing that expressed an unforgettable combination of passion, vulnerability and strength. Cline, born Virginia Patterson Hensley in 1933, was the first woman to become a superstar in the male-dominated field of country music, and she was one of the first female members of the Grand Ole Opry. In addition to selling records to country audiences, she also won a broader popular following via crossover hits that resonated with millions who would not normally listen to the Nashville Sound. Since her death, Cline’s legacy has continued to grow through the years, thanks to numerous re-releases of her classic Decca recordings plus books, tribute albums, biopics and documentaries. One of the most entertaining and engaging tributes is “Always...Patsy Cline,” a two-actress musical stage play that depicts the Nashville star during the last two years of her life and covers more than two dozen of her best-known songs, including “Walking After Midnight,” “I Fall To Pieces,”
“Sweet Dreams,” “She’s Got You” and “Crazy.” The 1993 script was written by Ted Swindley, based on a series of letters the singer exchanged with a fan in Texas between 1961 and her death. Arundel Barn Playhouse is closing its 16th season with a fine production of this excep-

and will make his debut with us this fall.” Tuckermans at 9 performs contemporary a cappella versions of well-known pop, rock, blues, and light jazz favorites, mostly from the 1960s to today. “Our voices make all the music,” explained Miller. “No instruments or pre-recorded instrumental tracks are ever used. Everything you hear, including what sounds like brass, electric guitars, or drums, is just us. Based in the New Hampshire Seacoast, Tuckermans at 9 has entertained audiences from Boston and Massachusetts’ north and south shores to Lewiston, Maine, and in New Hampshire from Portsmouth to Nashua and into the Lakes Region. Rounding out the roster, all from New Hampshire, are soprano Ashley Gove, altos Kam Damtoft and Fran Lipe, tenor Walt Porter, and bass Bill Hersman.
Silent Comedy ‘Grandma’s Boy’ to be Shown at Leavitt Theatre OGUNQUIT – The silent film era will return to the big screen at the Leavitt Theatre in Ogunquit with the showing of a classic silent comedy accompanied by live music. Showtime is Thursday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. at the historic Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St., Route 1, Ogunquit. Admission is $10 per person. Featured will be a fulllength comedy, “Grandma’s Boy,” starring Harold Lloyd, a popular 1920s film star. The screening, the latest in the Leavitt Theatre’s silent film series, will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in creating scores for silent films. “Grandma’s Boy” tells the story a cowardly young man (Lloyd) who seeks the courage to battle a menacing tramp who terrorizes his small hometown. The picture helped establish Lloyd as a major star for the rest of the silent film era. In revival, “Grandma’s Boy” serves as a great introduction to the silent film era. It also provides a marvelous window into small-town American life as it was lived a century ago. Despite his mega-star status in the 1920s, Lloyd is largely unknown to today’s audiences, mostly because he retained control of his films in later life and refused to let them be shown on television. Other upcoming performances this fall include Pittsfield and Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine. Trinity Church is located at 546 York Street in York Harbor. Admission by free-will donation. For details, visit tuckermansat9.com or trinityyorkharbor.episcopalmaine.org., or call 207-363-5095.

“People today remember Charlie Chaplin, but the silent era had many popular stars,” Rapsis said. “Harold Lloyd’s ‘average American’ character was immensely popular in the 1920s, not just in the U.S. but around the globe.” The Leavitt Theatre’s silent film series aims to recreate the full silent film experience, with restored prints projected on the big screen, live music, and the presence of an audience. For more information, call 207-646-3123 or visit www. leavittheatre.com.
Corona Brothers to Appear in Concert WELLS – The duo of “Rog and Ray” are the two lively souls who put together the Corona Brothers, a five-piece band that has been entertaining audiences for years and that will appear as part of the Wells Summer Concert Series at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Wells Harbor Park. This group offers a blend of Buffett and Belafonte-style Caribbean and California beach music along with some good old rock ‘n’ roll. The group includes Maine musicians Ben Ray Jones on guitar and flute, Mike Boilard on bass, Ron Bouffard on drums, “Rog” on electric and acoustic guitar and keyboards, and, “Ray” on conga, guitar, flute and a number of percussive instruments. Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. The following are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier. Share the responsibilities. While the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after

BUSINESS & FINANCE ...MOMS from page 18
child’s school. Many mothers find staying active with their children’s school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. Take advantage of workfrom-home policies. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it’s only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple
of times per month. Plan ahead. Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it’s ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids’ school schedules and plan trips during the school
year when school won’t be in session. A three-day weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today’s mothers can raise a happy family and still have a successful career. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Another Chance Animal Rescue
NORTH BERWICK – Meet Cindy, a Bengal red silver mackerel tabby spayed female. Cindy came in as a retired queen from a breeder who asked ACAR to find her a real home with a loving family. This gentle sweet, 8-year-old lady is very well adjusted. She will do well with older children, other cats, and well-behaved dogs. Cindy has lived her entire life as an indoor only kitty and is looking for a family or single who will allow her to continue this lifestyle. Cindy is current on all necessary vaccinations, Frontlined, has passed her wellness exam, and is ready for a new family. Cindy’s request list is simple: a few toys, lots of attention, a sunny window to watch the bird feeder, and a quiet nap zone. If you think that Cindy is a the purrrr-fect kitty for your newest

family member, please stop by the adoption center at 37 Market St., North Berwick, on Saturday to meet this beautiful lady. In addition to Cindy our featured pet of the week, we have a nice selection of young kittens, a good selection of teen kittens, a growing number of young adults, and a smaller number of adults all looking to you for a new start with a loving family of their very own. Cat Food Needed! We are spending a fortune on can cat/kitten food, dry cat/ kitten food and cedarific cat litter just to take care of the basic day to day needs. We are looking to the public to help us by dropping off these very basic items so we may continue to meet our mission. We have a drop box at the Hannaford in Wells or at Another Chance, 37 Market St., North Berwick, Monday to Saturday.
Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – If you have been considering adopting a small animal like a gerbil, hamster, rat, guinea pig or bird, the Animal Welfare Society should be your first stop. Not only do we have a wide selection of pets right now but the fees are very reasonable. Small animals can make great pets. They teach children to be responsible in the care of an animal that does not require the high demands of a dog or a cat. Stop by the shelter today to see if we have the right small animal for you and your family. Earl Meet Earl, a 9-year-old chihuahua mix. Earl is a laid-back, easy-going guy whose favorite activity is simply hanging out with others. Sure, he still enjoys getting regular walks, but otherwise he’s pretty mellow. Earl is very friendly and would be

happy to share a new home with some other dogs and gentle children. He’s also got a big brain in his little head. He knows “sit,” “down,” “give paw,” and would enjoy learning more with his new family. If you’ve been waiting for karma to bring something good your way, then you’ve found it in Earl. Kitty Meet Kitty, a... wait, is this right? Really? Wow, OK... a 20 ½-year-old cat. Yes, Kitty has been through the ups and downs of the past two decades. She’s seen it all, heard it all, and now she just wants to find a comfortable home to retire in. As one might expect, Kitty is a very gentle and relaxed girl. You certainly won’t find her running after toys, but you will find her napping in cozy spots. For an older cat, Kitty looks great and still enjoys getting attention like any young whippersnapper. Kitty gets along great with just about anyone. She would be happy to share a new home with dogs, other cats, and gentle children. She’d be happy just to have a home, period.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Have you seen a Chromebook or Chrome box? What are they? A Chromebook is a notebook computer that runs the Chrome operating system. No Microsoft Windows or Apple operating system. A ChromeBox is the same thing, but you hook it up to a monitor like a regular tower computer. I have had a ChromeBox sitting on my shelf for a few months now. I was thinking it would probably take some time to set it up, so I kept putting it off. I finally plugged it in this week, and it took only a minute or two and I was up and running. What a nice surprise. The Chrome operating system does one thing, and it does it well. It goes online. So far this works fine for me, I hooked it up to the TV in the kitchen so that I can access the AllRecipes website while I am cooking. The only thing that I wish I could change right now, is that it goes into sleep mode rather
quickly. Every time I came back to see what the next step in the recipe was, the computer had gone to sleep and I had to wake it back up, though when I left a video playing on the webpage, it did not go to sleep. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I turned on my PC yesterday I got a message: “Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.” I inserted my recovery disk in and nothing happened, I got the same message. Is there a different disk I am supposed to insert? My PC is a 9-year-old Compaq. Is it worth messing with? Thanks for any information you can give me. ~ Dan Dear Dan, On a 9-year-old computer, there is a very good chance that this error message means that your hard drive has failed and you would need to replace the

hard drive. Hopefully, you have already backed up your important files like pictures and documents. Trying to use your recovery disk is a good first step in trying to fix the problem, but in addition to inserting the disk and trying to start your computer, you might also need to go into the system BIOS and set it to book from the CD or DVD drive. The steps to do this are different for each computer, so I can’t give you directions. If the recovery disk works, that is great; you might get a few more years use out of the computer. But if the hard drive has failed, you are probably better off looking at a new computer. ~ Elizabeth PS: Running the recovery disk will erase your data files, so get those backed up first. Dear Computer Lady, Do you know how to get Facebook to show things in chronological order? I’d like to see the newest posts from people and news-
pages I follow right away. This morning some NECN posts and Matt Noyes posts and some friends’ posts from 11 hours ago to a day ago showed up. Thanks, Mary Dear Mary, I like to see my Facebook posts in chronological order as well, and even though it is simple to get them to display that way, for some reason, Facebook keeps putting it back to the “Top Stories” view. Here is how to see your wall posts with the most recent first. Go to your Facebook news feed (click the “Home” link next to your name in the top-right corner of the page). Just above the first post, a little to the right is the word “Sort.” Click on “Sort” then click “Most Recent.” Now your news feed posts are displayed with the newest at the top. ~ Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, First, a big thank-you for all I’ve learned from your letter.

Now, I am getting rid of a laptop computer. The screen is no longer good. Is there a hard drive on a laptop that can be removed before you dispose of it? I am concerned about security and have learned from somewhere that you should remove the hard drive from a computer before disposing of it for security reasons. I would appreciate your comments. ~ Gwendoline Dear Gwendoline, Yes, there is a hard drive on your laptop computer that you can either erase, or remove before you dispose of the laptop. Most laptops have fairly easy access to the hard drive. Just remove one of the small access panels on the back of the laptop and remove the hard drive. It is just about the size of a deck of cards. Occasionally, I come across a laptop where the hard drive is not easy to access, so if you can’t easily find it, google the model of your laptop and you can usually find directions for how to access the hard drive. If you have any problems, I can either erase, or remove, or even save your files that are on the drive for you, just give me a call to set up an appointment. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Brilliant Bloomers Nursery School Prepares for the 2013-2014 School Year WELLS – Brilliant Bloomers Nursery School, located at 1734 Post Road, offers highly educated teachers, Spanish and music lessons, a large outdoor playground, three separate indoor play rooms (including a movement play room with a climbing structure, slide, and teeter-totter), and multi-sensory teaching techniques. Brilliant Bloomers uses multi-sensory teaching techniques because its teachers believe that every child learns through a different combination of learning styles. The four primary learning styles are auditory (listening), visual (sight), and kinesthetic (motor) and touch. Brilliant Bloomers teachers use all four of these primary learning styles every day to teach preschoollevel academics, and incorporate two other learning styles – olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) – as often as possible. tors and actresses overplay this character to the point where clowning detracts from the real appeal of this show, which is the music. And speaking of the music, Rebecca Cesario, an Arundel Barn veteran actress, gives a dazzling and convincing performance in the title role. Cesario has obviously listened very carefully to Cline’s recordings and has mastered the famous star’s emotive contralto vocal style, including her distinctive inflections and phrasing. Her round face, framed in curly brown hair, closely matches vintage photos of Cline.
“We’re not trying to do an impersonation,” explained director Brian Swasey. “We’re just trying to get the stylings right.” With the aid of music director Alan Patrick Kenny, who coached her through rehearsals, Cesario has succeeded admirably. Kudos also to costumer Rheanna Oliver-Palanca. Cesario has numerous costume changes, with about a dozen classic 1960s dresses. Her most attention-getting getup was her first: a striking red cowgirl suit trimmed with fringe. I also liked Chris Rhoton’s simple set, with barn frame
timbers filling the proscenium – think of a barn within a barn – plus a very realistic kitchen corner constructed at extreme stage right. Ed Reichert leads a four-man band – called the Bodacious Bobcats – which is located at the rear of the stage, in full view of the audience.

Charigot who had served as a model for his works and with whom he already had a child, Pierre (1885). After his marriage, he painted many scenes of his wife, children and their nurse in daily family life. Renoir developed rheumatoid arthritis in 1892 and moved to a warmer climate near the Mediterranean coast. He continued painting during the last 20 years of his life, even though arthritis and other physical deformities limited his movement and he was wheelchair bound. In 1919, Renoir visited the Louvre to see his paintings hanging with those of the old masters; he died Dec. 3 of that year. “The Impressionists: Renoir” will be shown on a full wall-size screen with discussion led by members of the Ogunquit Art Association.
