More Mosquito Pools Test Positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in York County YORK COUNTY – Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the presence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in mosquito pools from the towns of Alfred and York in York County. This increases the number of mosquito pools from Maine to test positive for EEE in 2013. According to Dr. Sheila Pinette, Director of Maine CDC, additional positive tests are likely. “We still have plenty of warm weather ahead in the next few weeks and this increases the possibility of additional positive

pools.” EEE is a virus that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause serious illness in humans, large animals like horses and some species of birds. Maine confirmed

EEE in a flock of pheasants during 2012 and experienced unprecedented EEE activity during 2009 with multiple animals and mosquito pools testing positive for the virus. Regionally, all of our sur-

Cyclists on the various rides – 25, 40, 62 or 100 miles – will pedal from and return to Southern Maine Community College. “It’s not surprising that the Maine Lighthouse Ride is a sellout this year,” said Bob Bowker, spokesperson for the ride. “When you combine spectacular Maine scenery, great food, and friendly local volunteers, people come from all over the country to experience it. And at the same time,

they are helping to build the Eastern Trail for all to enjoy.” This year’s riders can expect the usual amenities of maps, cue sheets, multiple rest stops, food, refreshments, and on-call support vehicles. In addition, some riders will be sporting pre-ordered commemorative MLR bike jerseys. Other riders will have the opportunity to place orders for the jerseys on the day of the ride. While this year’s MLR has no more spots available, and no registration will be taken the day of the ride, trail supporters and See RACE page 5...

Massachusetts has also had a resident confirmed with EEE. “EEE is a very serious illness” says Dr. Stephen Sears, State Epidemiologist, “Mainers need to take appropriate precautions against mosquitoes to prevent this illness.” Maine CDC recommends the following preventative measures to protect against EEE and other mosquito-borne illnesses: Use an Envi-

It’s called the K-laser and it’s a non-drug, non-surgical treatment option with no known side effects. It sounds too good to be true, but it is true. Professional sports teams, like the New York Yankees, would not be using this therapy on their high-priced athletes if it didn’t work! My name is Dr. Jeff Donatello and I am a Certified Nutrition Specialist, a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and a Board Certified Chiropractor. I’ve been using a combination of chiropractic, functional neurology, laser therapy, and integrative medicine to help people recover from chronic conditions and get their health and quality of life back. I am excited about the advancement in laser therapy. The K-laser allows everyday people to get life changing therapy that only top athletes once received. By adding laser therapy to our already successful heal pain protocols, we are able to return people to a more active life more quickly than ever before.

If you’ve suffered with heal pain or plantar fasciitis for any length of time, you know how disabling the pain can be – especially that first step out of bed in the morning. You also know that heal cups, splints, boots, and crazy socks never really address the problem. The more patients I help get better, the more I realize that… No one should have to suffer the way you do. I have made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic conditions like you.

By working together we can customize a plan just for you, because no two people are the same.

RE/MAX Realty One Quilt Raffle Benefits Food Pantry

YORK – RE/MAX Realty One is once again raffling off a lovely quilt to benefit the York Community Services Association Food Pantry. “These are tough

times for seniors and the funds raised by this quilt raffle will help put community funds to work,” says Jimmy Hager, broker at RE/MAX Realty One in York. The Food Pantry

has seen a dramatic increase this year in the number of seniors needing assistance, about 25 per week. The summer was also busy with 35-40 families each week and the food pantry concentrated on buying healthy snacks for children home for the summer. The handmade “Autumn Flavors” quilt was donated by Betty McPhee of York. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5, and can be purchased at RE/ MAX Realty One offices at 439 U.S. Route One, York 207363-2497 or at the York Village Marketfest booth on Saturday,

Ogunquit Antique Show and Sale Next Weekend

OGUNQUIT – The 39th annual Ogunquit Antique Show and Sale is on its way. It showcases jewelry, linen, porcelains, crystal, furniture, glassware, prints and art of all forms in this beautiful show to be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Dunaway Center. The wares come from eighteen New England dealers who hand pick their displays to please the tastes of our ‘Ogunquitcentric’ appreciators.

The show is the only fundraiser that the Friends of the Ogunquit Heritage Museum hold to benefit the museum which is one of Ogunquit’s jewels in and of itself. The proceeds of the event go directly to support the museums exhibits. This year, along with the permanent displays of the art and culture of the town’s history, there is more personal stories of great artists who shaped our art community and became

world famous. In fact, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armory Show in New York City. From February 17 to March 15 in 1913, New York’s 69th Regiment Armory, on Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th streets, was home to approximately 1,250 paintings, sculptures, and decorative works by over 300 European and American artists. Of note and personal pride to Ogunquit is that the show was founded by and included many of Ogunquit’s artists of the day, such as: Walt Kuhn (founder), Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Guy duBois, Robert Laurent, Richard Chatterton, John Sloan, Robert Henri, Marguerite Zorach and William Zorach. Your donation of $5 is tax deductible and allows the museum to continue to grow and provide knowledge of Ogunquit history. timepiece on display at the D.A. Hurd Library. The 1770 Samuel Buffum grandfather clock made by George Savage of Huddersfield, England is a gift to the society by Jean MacCorison of Barrington, RI and is on loan to the library where it will be kept under climate controlled conditions. The Samuel Buffum home, where the clock originally stood, is just a few doors down from the library on High Street, now the office of Dr. Charles Hintermeister. Samuel Buffum was the town’s unofficial historian for several decades and ran the Buffum Box Mill from 1866 until the early 1900s. MacCorison inherited the clock upon the death of Edith Buffum in 1978, daughter of Samuel Buffum. He is quoted as saying, “Sam and Edith would be very pleased to know their clock is back on High Street.”

~ News ~ Library and Museum to Host Chowder Festival KENNEBUNK – The Brick Store Museum and Kennebunk Free Library invite families and friends of all ages to the Our Shared History Chowder Festival on Sept. 14 from Noon to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the museum and library. This event celebrates the end of a summer-long collaboration between the organizations in the Our Shared History maritime heritage programming, which began in May with a book discussion of Moby Dick. Admission is $5 per person. All proceeds will be split between them. At the festival, visitors are invited to taste chowders from local restaurants, which have generously donated one gallon of their best chowder for the event. During the tasting, the Our Shared History “Words of the Ocean” Poetry Contest winners will be announced, and their poems will be on display for visitors to view. At 2:30 p.m. visitors are invited into the Brick Store Museum’s program center to see an

original one-act play discussing the ocean, past and present, by Steve Hrehovcik, starring Frank Stetson, titled “Battle in the Bottle.” Thus far, the festival will host chowder from well-known local spots like Forbes Seafood Restaurant, Alisson’s, the Maine Diner, The Village Tavern, Arundel Seafood Center, and Litchfield’s Bar and Grill. Restaurants that would like to participate in this community event should contact Cynthia Walker, program director, at cwalker@ brickstoremuseum.org or call 207-985-4802. Our Shared History joint events included a reading program; field trips to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Bath Iron Works and the Maine Maritime Museum, to learn more about modern-day shipbuilding; a nautical-themed poetry contest; author lectures; Monday movie nights with maritime themes; a shipbuilding history tour of Kennebunk; and a maritime heritage exhibit at the Brick Store Museum.

School Days Can Challenge Healthy Habits School is back in session, and while the kids think about reading, writing, and arithmetic, parents worry about healthy food choices, particularly the snacks that children seem to nosh on constantly. Dr. Rogers is the director

of the Let’s Go! program of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, as well as the mother of two teens. “While kids have traditionally gravitated to sugary treats, we’re seeing a shift toward more healthy options,” says Dr. Rogers, whose program works with day care centers, school cafeteria staff, teachers, and school administrators to promote better food choices and more recreational activity. SMMC Sleep Lab Receives Program Accreditation KENNEBUNK – Southern Maine Medical Center’s (SMMC) Sleep Lab in Kennebunk recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). This five-year designation is only awarded to programs that meet or exceed all standards for professional health care by the AASM. These core standards include personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively

Museum to Offer Program on Ogunquit Art Colony OGUNQUIT – On Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, 86 Obeds Lane, will offer a panel discussion on the art colony in Perkins Cove in the 1950s and 1960s. A diverse panel consisting of DeWitt Hardy, Helen Horn, Stuart Nudelman and Louise Tragard, all of whom are familiar with the art colony, will discuss and share stories about that time Hardy was one of the last artists to rent studio space from the Ogunquit School of Painting and Sculpture. In addition to working and painting in Ogunquit, Hardy served as the Ogunquit Museum of American Art’s (OMAA) curator and associate director for 11 years. Horn and her husband, Mike, were fixtures in Perkins Cove, living in what was once called the Ice House. She also served on the Barn Gallery and OMAA Boards, helping to bring the arts into a new era after the Ogunquit School of Painting and Sculpture closed.

Nudelman and his wife arrived in Ogunquit in the early 1960s. He went on to open a summer photography school here and became one of the first photographers to be juried into the prestigious Ogunquit Art Association. Tragard grew up spending summers across from Perkins Cove and knew many of the artists and their families first hand. In 1983 she went on to research and write the first draft of the Barn Gallery’s book, “A Century of Color,” about the first 100 years of Ogunquit’s art colony.

business & finance Time Management Tips for Working Moms

The responsibility of raising a family while maintaining a career is never easy. Working moms often wish there were more time in the day to spend with their families or get more done at the office. While there’s no way women can add a 25th hour to their days, there are ways to manage your time more effectively so you can get around to doing those things you never seem to have the time to do. Get a head start. Perhaps no time of day is more hectic for a working mother than the morning, when she must get ready for

work while getting the kids ready for school and ensuring they have a good breakfast. Some moms even drop their youngsters off at school. That’s a lot of tasks to tackle before you even sit down in your office to answer the first e-mail or listen to the morning’s first voicemail. To make mornings less frantic, get a head start the night before by laying out the next day’s clothes for you and encouraging your kids to do the same. Preparing lunches, packing a gym bag and even setting the coffee maker can all be done the night before to save you time and make mornings more relaxing. Take public transportation to

work. Public transportation may not be available to all working mothers, but those with access to a train, subway or bus might want to take advantage of that opportunity. If you do, you can spend your daily commute catching up with work instead of sitting in traffic behind the wheel of your car. Even if public transportation takes a little more time to get you to work than driving yourself, that extra time can be spent preparing for the day ahead. Catch up on work over the weekend. The weekends are a time when many working mothers

look to unwind, but spending an hour or two catching up on work on a Saturday or Sunday morning is a great way to make the week a little less hectic. As the week progresses toward the weekend, set aside certain tasks that aren’t urgent but can be easily addressed in an hour or so over the weekend. This frees up time during the week to tackle larger projects and might even

allow you to leave your office earlier on weekdays. Prepare or even cook meals in advance. The days of yore when mom cooked all the meals are largely a thing of the past, as nowadays both parents tend to share cooking duties. Moms See TIPS page 19...

The Right Time to ask for a Raise Depends on a Host of factors Asking an employer for a raise can be nerve-wracking. When asking for a raise, men and women do not want to give the impression that they are unhappy, but they do want to convey to their employers that they feel their performance merits a higher salary. Balancing those two points can be difficult, and employees may even be intimidated at the idea of asking for more money. In many instances, employers recognize the efforts of their hard-working employees and are happy to reward them with more money, while other times an employer might recognize an employee’s efforts but simply be unable to offer them more money until a later time. Before asking for a raise, men and women should consider a host of factors. Timing: Timing is often everything when asking for a raise. A company coming off a poor financial quarter or several poor quarters in a row may not have the means to give its employees more money. This isn’t a reflection on the employee’s value but rather a reflection on the company’s financial reality at the moment. Men and women who want to ask their employers for more money should first consider the company’s current financial status. No time is better than when the company is breaking sales records and thriving, while no time is worse than when the company is laying off employees or instituting other costcutting measures. Recent pay history: Men and women who recently received a raise may

want to hold off on requesting more money. Even if your performance since your most recent raise has exceeded expectations, asking for another raise so shortly after your previous one may come off as selfish or unappreciative. Recent company history: Few businesses managed to make it through the recent recession without hitting some sort of financial slump. So while things may be on the rebound around the office, your company’s recent history merits consideration before you ask for a raise. If your company or your specific department dipped financially during the recession, you may want to wait until things have shown steady improvement before asking for a raise. Should your department show consistent improvement, then your patience will serve you well, as you can now include that improved performance as further evidence that you have earned a raise. Tenure: How long you have been at your company is another

factor to consider before asking for more money. Strong performance will prove a better ally to you than longevity. If your main selling point when asking for a raise is your tenure at the company, then you may want to wait until your performance is your biggest selling point. Motivation: Your motivation for asking for a raise is another factor to consider ahead of time. Personal issues, such as a new addition to the household or a higher mortgage payment, are not as impressive to employers as performance-related issues. Many employers care about their employees and want them to be happy outside of the office. But even the most accommodating employer likely won’t feel an employee deserves a raise because he or she just bought a more expensive car. Bosses may be sympathetic to such issues, but they ultimately want to reward performance and likely won’t base salary decisions on anything but performance. Asking for a raise can be

...TIPS from page 18 can cut down on the time it takes to serve up family meals on weeknights by cooking meals in advance. Think of dishes you can prepare on the weekends and then freeze until you’re ready to serve. Or purchase a slow cooker that slowly cooks your meal all day while you’re out and about. By the time you and your family arrive home at night, dinner will be ready and you will have more time to relax after a long day. Share the work. Sharing your workload pertains to both home and the office. At home, don’t feel like you have

to be a superhero capable of handling all of the household tasks like cooking, cleaning and walking the dog on your own. Share these responsibilities with your spouse and even your children when they’re old enough. At the office, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your coworkers or ask for favors from coworkers who might be able to help. Managing time effectively is of paramount importance for working mothers. Learning to do so effectively can make for a better personal as well as professional life.

The Libraries of North Berwick, Berwick, and South Berwick are hosting a book discussion group as part of the Maine Humanities Council’s Let’s Talk About It discussion series. Exploring Human Boundaries: Literary Perspectives on Health Care Providers and Their Patients will consider the issue of “A disease or a sick person”? Health care professionals do not always focus on what is most important to the patient and the patient’s family. Five classic 20th-century literary accounts of illness, death, and dying dramatically illuminate these complex issues. Books are available at any of the Berwicks’ libraries. Pre-

OGUNQUIT – Michele and Tim, innkeepers at The Puffin Inn, plan to provide elegantly furnished, spotless guestrooms; personal service, and a hearty, hot, sweet and savory breakfast with variety and the trendy flare that can be found at local area breakfast restaurants. “The previous owners/innkeepers, Mark Brunell and Steven Sousa, did a wonderful job building a strong and loyal customer base, and our intention is to sustain that and continue to create our own new relationships within the local and visiting communities,” note the new owners, who are pictured at center and surrounded by well-wishers during a recent ribbon cutting arranged

by the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. “The Puffin Inn is a beautiful historic building and we plan to preserve and honor that as we continue to add our own modern chic touches.” The Puffin Inn will be open for the season, April 1 to Dec. 31, at 433 Main St., Ogunquit. YORK COUNTY – The elderly population has been on the rise for years now and is set to explode with 10,000 people turning age 65 every day for the next 19 years. Sean Violette, 28, will be one of the people there to help seniors along the way. For the past 6 years, families throughout the Cumberland County area have experienced the peace-of-mind knowing that their loved ones have been cared for through the in-home services offered by Peter Violette, owner of the Scarborough Comfort Keepers®. Today, Peter’s son, Sean Violette is joining the business by opening another office of Comfort Keepers that will serve York County. Sean finds an incredible sense of fulfillment knowing what he is doing is making a huge impact in the lives of seniors every day. Since opening their Scarborough office in 2007, Peter Violette has experienced rapid growth and now has a very large staff of caregivers that provide care to seniors in their

homes, or even in assisted living or other senior living facilities. Seeing incredible potential in York County is the reason Sean is opening a second location. “Most seniors prefer to stay in their own home, and many times, with the addition of a little extra help with daily activities, many of our clients are able to stay safely in the comfort of their own home,” said Violette. “Our goal is to provide seniors and their families choices in where a senior lives. Even if a senior calls an assisted living facility home, we can provide a level of companionship and service that goes a long way to preserve their quality of life. Adding a new Comfort Keepers location allows us to expand our reach and help an even larger population in and around the area.” This is not Sean’s first business venture. In 2012 his company, VR Marketing Consultants, was nominated for the Entreverge award. The Entreverge award is given to local entrepre-

neurs whose businesses exhibit a scalable vision for the future and a long term commitment to the people, place and prosperity of Maine. Violette plans on applying the lessons he’s learned in his past business activities to make Comfort Keepers in York County a success. About Comfort Keepers® Comfort Keepers® is a leading franchise network in the in-home care market for senior and other adults needing care. Since its founding in 1998, the network has grown to more than 700 franchised locations around the world by staying true to the founders’ goal of providing quality, caring in-home care services that allow clients the opportunity to age in place. In August of 2009, the brand was strengthened even further by the purchase of the franchisor, CK Franchising, Inc., by Sodexo, one of the world’s leading food and facilities management services companies and the global leader in the health care and seniors markets.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – We work so hard to provide quality care for homeless felines. Your donations and contributions are what keep us going. We are currently under the gun to raise funds for our next location as our building is for sale and we may have to move. One look around at how we have succeeded at creating a wonderful adoption center makes us so concerned to think this may end. Our kitties watch from the windows as cars pass our building with the For Sale sign out front and they of course don’t know what’s happening but we sure do. It’s an anxious time for us and we are feeling very concerned about our future. Please donate toward our capital fund so our lifesaving work can continue without interruption. Please go to our site and check out our video and tell your friends to do the same. Adoptions continue and we have many kitties in need of great homes. Rarely do any of our kitties return to us because we screen carefully and do home visits and delivery. However, two of our kitties did just returned to us. Paige, a beautiful short hair grey and white mother cat and her kitten, Grey Wind, are again available for adoption. If you love

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – Meet Rosie… Rosie is a one-year-old hound who was recently rescued from a very high kill shelter in North Carolina. Rosie was a family pet but for a variety of reasons (nothing to do with Rosie) her family made the difficult decision to give up their wonderful, gentle, loving sweet baby. Rosie is already spayed, her vaccinations are current and she really wants to be a family dog with all the love and trust that goes with that position. Rosie is super with children of all age groups, will do well with non aggressive cats and dogs. Rosie is an all around good family dog. Rosie is a hound so a fence is a must-it can be a regular fenced yard or an invisible fenced yard, because a hound is a hound and will follow their nose. If you are the family or single that would like to make Rosie a member of the family to love and hold for her life time, please make arrangements to stop by the adoption center @ 37 Market Street to complete an application for gentle sweethearted, Rosie. In addition to our featured pet of the week, Rosie, ACAR has a large selection of kittens that are ready for new families and an equally large selection of very young kittens that will be available in the coming weeks, a good group of young adult cats, a good group of adult cats and a growing number of older cats also looking to you for new everything he can get. York High School Games Cancelled Due to Eastern Equine Encephalitis YORK – Mosquitoes trapped and tested in York have recently tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The disease has been discovered in many towns throughout New England this summer. However, no human cases of EEE have been reported in York as of yet.

The positive test resulted from trapped mosquitoes in the area of Bog Road, but may be in other areas of York as well. The tested mosquitoes were not the type that bite humans, nevertheless they can pass it on to humanbiting mosquitoes via birds. The town has sprayed all school and municipal athletic

fields, but to further minimize the probability of mosquito bites York High School will be suspending home night games until October 1. An adjusted soccer and football schedule will be forth coming. These precautions are necessary until the first hard frost which for coastal York averages October 1.

~ News from Around the State ~ WCSH6-TV’s “207” To Feature Maine Author Offering Solutions To Bullying Epidemic MAINE – Award-winning Maine author Katherine Mayfield will appear on “207” to discuss solutions to the bullying epidemic with host Kathleen Shannon on Friday, September 6 at 7pm. Mayfield is the author of a new book, ‘Bullied: Why You Feel Bad Inside and What to Do About It,’ which is a guide to recovery for teens and adults who have been bullied or abused. “Tremendous efforts have been made to end the bullying epidemic, but they’re only partially successful,” Mayfield states. “What’s missing is an understanding of emotional intelligence—the emotions that

drive bullies to bully, and bullying victims to commit suicide. We need to teach kids how to manage their feelings and express them in healthy ways so they don’t feel compelled to bully other kids, or to take their lives in response to bullying.” Bullied teaches teens and adults the skills and tools of emotional intelligence, and includes a simple four-step plan that readers can use to manage their feelings and express them in a healthy way; tips for coping with bullies; hotlines and advice for teens who are considering suicide; suggestions for raising self-esteem; quotes from famous people; and interviews

with psychologists and adults who were bullied in childhood and took steps to recover from the trauma. Michelle Baker, Director of Education of Blaze My Trail Youth Programs, writes in the Foreword to ‘Bullied,’ “I dearly wish this book had been available to me, my family, and my school when I was growing up.” ‘Bullied’ is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and can be purchased through Maine Authors Publishing (www.MaineAuthorsPublishing.com). Signed copies of the book are available through the author’s website, www.katherine-mayfield.com.

The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. “We look forward to Bug Maine-ia all year long,” comments Maine State Museum Chief Educator Joanna Torow. “It is truly a wonderful event, especially for teachers, parents, and students, who can get some great up-close experiences with

Liquor Revenue Bond Sold, Hospitals to be Paid Within Weeks AUGUSTA – The State of Maine’s liquor revenue bond has been sold. The revenue bond, part of Governor LePage’s plan for a new wholesale liquor contract, will be used to repay $183.5 million in welfare debt the state owes to Maine hospitals. This payment will trigger a federal match of $305 million.

“With the sale of the liquor revenue bond, Maine hospitals are now just weeks away from being repaid the more than $484 million in welfare debt owed to them,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “This is good news for these employers and their local communities.” The full payment is expected to be paid during the

month of September. Meanwhile, the $220 million liquor operation revenue bond received an “all-in rate,” or total interest cost, of just 3.79 percent. “High demand from investors helped drive the interest rate down,” said Mike Goodwin, executive director of the Maine Municipal Bond Bank.

“The interest shown by investors and the positive ratings received from the rating agencies demonstrate the strength of the liquor business in Maine.” Standard & Poor’s assigned its ‘A+’ rating and Moody’s Investors Services assigned their ‘A1’ rating to the Maine liquor revenue bond. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I don’t understand about Carbonite back up? I have a external hard drive backing up once a week.& the old hard drive out of my old computer, & pictures backed up on cds? Why would I need anything else? Ronald Dear Ronald, First, I am so happy to hear that you are backing up onto your external hard drive, and putting your pictures on CDs! I wish more people would do this. For the most part, online backup services like Carbonite and Mozy do the same thing as your external hard drive and CDs, but there are a couple of important differences. 1. Online backup services store your files securely on their servers. This means that in the event of a disaster like flood,

fire or theft, even though your computer, CDs and hard drives might be destroyed or stolen, your data is still available from the online backup service. All you need is your username and password. 2. Online backup services run automatically. This means that you don’t have to remember to plug in your external hard drive and start the backup program, or remember to create CDs of your photos. The online backup software remembers and automatically backs up your files for you. I always tell my clients that they should have their important data in at least three different locations. First on their hard drive, second on a local backup device like an external hard drive or file server, and thirdly in an offsite location. I have not seen anyone lose their important information if they follow this backup strat-

egy. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I try to keep my deleted items to a minimum by permanently deleting them on a regular basis. But have totally forgotten about all the SENT emails. Should I go through & highlight them all to delete? Thanks for all your help over the years! Faye Dear Faye, You can delete or save as many sent items as you want. The Sent Items folder does not tend to get as large as the Deleted folder. If you have important messages that you have sent and want to save as a reference, you can either leave them in your sent items folder, or move them to another folder. If you are a person who sends lots of messages, or forwards a lot of messages, then you should probably clean out the sent items on a regular basis. If

you don’t send a lot of messages, just check every few months or so to see if there is anything you want to get rid of. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Somehow I get extra toolbars across the top of my page and would like to get rid of them. But I can’t figure out how to do it. Help, please, Janice Dear Janice, I have been fixing a lot of computers lately that have multiple toolbars and coupon programs installed. These toolbars and programs usually slow your computer down, display unwanted advertisements, and sometimes make it impossible to navigate on the internet. Getting rid of them is sometimes easy, and sometimes very difficult. First, you can go to the control Panel, click on “Uninstall A Program” and try to find the toolbar in the list of programs. The Print Screen key works in all versions of Windows, and even in DOS (the Microsoft operating system before Windows). In DOS, pressing the print screen key causes the computer to print a picture of your screen. In most versions of Windows, pressing the print screen key causes the computer to take a picture of your screen and store it on the clipboard. You can then paste it into any graphics program. We want them to think in terms of healthy habits, not their weight or shape.” Some of Dr. Roger’s favorite tips to encourage healthy habits: Avoid using sugary snacks as a reward or motivation; Leave a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter for kids to grab as they head out the door; Let your kids choose which fruits and vegetables you’ll have for dinner; Make you healthy snacks fun, such

as kabobs with grapes, melons, cheese cubes, and berries; Blend frozen fruit and yogurt for a delicious and refreshing smoothie; Let kids make their own Trail Mix – provide bags of granola, dried fruit, and nuts; Spend time together outside after dinner. Play tag, toss a ball, or take the family dog for a walk around the block; and Incorporate a weekly family night and replace television with a board game. While 5-2-1-0 focuses on kids, experts are seeing the benefits spill over into other members of the family. “The great thing about teaching kids about being healthy is that they’ll often encourage their parents to do the same,” says Dr. Rogers. ~ News & Classifieds ~ Demonstration of Ikenobo Ikebana Senators Encourage Maine Students to Apply for Youth Program Set at Portsmouth Library PORTSMOUTH, NH – An Ikenobo Ikebana demonstration will be held at Portsmouth Public Library on Thursday, Sept.12, at 3:30 p.m. Immediately following the demonstration the accompanying exhibit will be unveiled in the library lobby. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Sept. 14. Ikebana is described as a way to express one’s feelings with each individual flower. Many different Ikebana styles have appeared during the 550 years of Ikebana history. They each have a distinctive character and are arranged with a par-

ticular form or pattern in mind. However, awareness of natural beauty allows the arranger to approach the ideal beauty which Ikebana seeks. The Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter is sponsoring the event. The Kittery Point Chapter is affiliated with the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America in San Francisco and Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Four members of the Kittery Point Chapter will demonstrate four different Ikebana styles. The exhibit in the library lobby will be of arrangements made by members of the Kittery Point Ikenobo

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) announced recently that it has begun its statewide selection process, and Senators Susan ColChapter. For more information, contact Elaina Hatsis of the Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter at elainahatsis@comcast.net. The event is free and open to the public. Make the Most of Road Trips to Enjoy Fall Foliage Jaunts to view fall foliage are popular excursions come autumn. The vivid color on display in forests and parks is simply too much for many motorists to resist. Though nature’s beauty is often on display regardless of geography, some locales tend to boast more beauteous backdrops and picturesque landscapes than others. The key is to visit during peak viewing times. Leaves begin to change earlier in the northernmost latitudes. For example, much of Canada and portions of the northern United States begin to witness changes in foliage in late September, whereas regions further south must wait until October to see those changes. Mid-October is when peak times are most prevalent for the greatest portion of the United States. Travelers in North Dakota and Wyoming can view fall foliage at this time. Autumn coloring persists until late October and early November in certain areas, including the southeastern and central regions of the United States. When planning a road trip to see fall foliage, pay attention to local weather and foliage reports. Remember, road trips are quite popular this time of year, and municipal parks may be quite crowded on the weekends. If you can spare time off during the week, it may work to your advantage to cruise around when traffic is less congested. Bring along maps or a GPS system so that you can travel to multiple areas. Autumn leaves can be enjoyed from a car, but they are equally enjoyable when experienced on a hiking trip. Pack a bagged lunch and picnic in a quiet spot, and you’re bound to spot squirrels and other wildlife gathering up food reserves in preparation for the winter weather. While the foliage is impressive enough on its own, the science behind this awesome display of color is something to behold as well. During the spring and summer, leaves produce most of the food necessary for the tree’s

growth. Cells inside of the leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight, turning it into sugars and starch that the tree uses for food. In addition to green chlorophyll, other pigments specific to the types of trees are present. These pigments are generally masked by the large amount of chlorophyll present during warm weather. When autumn arrives, changes in the duration of sunlight result in the gradual decrease of chlorophyll and the breakdown of residual chlorophyll in the leaves as the trees prepare to stop food

production for the cold hibernation. Other chemical changes take place as the leaves prepare for winter, and these mix with chlorophyll residue to produce various shades of colors. Weather, light and water supply will influence the shades of colors as well. Rainy weather makes them more vivid. While the colors are appearing, a special layer of cells develops, and this layer gradually severs the tissues of the leaf from the branches before the leaves fall to the ground. The best days to see leaves are those days that are cool and dry. Leaves that fall on roadways and are dampened by rain can be very slippery, so it is important to

lins and Angus King encourage Maine high students to apply. The USSYP brings two students from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity to Washington to experience an intensive week-long educational program about the workings of the Senate and the federal government overall. Maine’s two selected students will join 102 other delegates March 8 through 15, 2014, for the program’s 52nd annual Washington Week. “I have the honor and privilege of being the first delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program elected to the U.S. Senate,” said Sen. Collins. “My commitment to public service was reinforced as a senior in high school when I was chosen as a delegate and traveled to Washington and met Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman in history to serve in both the House and the Senate. I encourage all interested high school students to apply to participate in this worthwhile program.” “The United States Senate Youth Program offers an ex-

traordinary opportunity for two Maine high school students to join their peers from across the country in getting an inside look at public service and how the government works,” Sen. King said. Each of the 104 student delegates will receive a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship, in addition to the all-expenses paid trip to the nation’s capital. They will meet with legislators, cabinet officers, government leaders and other policy-makers. The USSYP program is fully funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The delegate selection is administered by each state’s chief school officer in cooperation with high school principals. Delegates must be juniors or seniors and elected student officers for the 2013-2014 academic year, and they must reside in the state where they attend school. Eligibility considerations may also be made for student representatives elected or selected (by a panel, commission or board) to district, regional or state-level civic or educational organizations. Names of students selected will be formally announced midDecember. Interested students should contact their high school principal.
