More Mosquito Pools Test Positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in York County YORK COUNTY – Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the presence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in mosquito pools from the towns of Alfred and York in York County. This increases the number of mosquito pools from Maine to test positive for EEE in 2013. According to Dr. Sheila Pinette, Director of Maine CDC, additional positive tests are likely. “We still have plenty of warm weather ahead in the next few weeks and this increases the possibility of additional positive

pools.” EEE is a virus that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause serious illness in humans, large animals like horses and some species of birds. Maine confirmed

from 26 states will saddle up on September 7 for the 10th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride hosted by the Eastern Trail Alliance. Cyclists on the various rides – 25, 40, 62 or 100 miles – will pedal from and return to Southern Maine Community College. “It’s not surprising that the Maine Lighthouse Ride is a sellout this year,” said Bob Bowker, spokesperson for the ride. “When you combine spectacular Maine scenery, great food, and friendly local volunteers, people come from all over the country to experience it. And at the same time,

they are helping to build the Eastern Trail for all to enjoy.” This year’s riders can expect the usual amenities of maps, cue sheets, multiple rest stops, food, refreshments, and on-call support vehicles. In addition, some riders will be sporting pre-ordered commemorative MLR bike jerseys. Other riders will have the opportunity to place orders for the jerseys on the day of the ride. Lynn Lyons Workshops Addressing Bullying KENNEBUNK – On September 11, RSU 21 is dedicating the day to educating students, staff, and community about how to prevent and address bullying. With the generous support and funding from the South Congregational Church’s Outreach Program, Lynn Lyons will spend the day doing a series of workshops. She will present at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels, and offer an evening session for parents and other interested community members. ~ News ~ Summer Solstice Craft Show Features New England Artisans WELLS – Creations made by Maine and New England artists and craftsmen will be on display at the 25th Annual Summer Solstice Craft Show, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, at Wells Elementary School on Route 109. Seventy artists and crafters will display their wares inside the school and outdoors on the courtyard. The Summer Solstice crafts shows, which are juried, are known for their quality and variety. Visitors will find jewelry, pottery, photography, soaps, clothing and accessories, candles, wood crafts, fiber arts, and handcrafted specialty foods. Shaker Hill Apple Festival on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the grounds of the former Alfred Shaker Village on Shaker Hill Road in Alfred, off Routes 202 and 4. The Festival is co-sponsored by the York County Shelter Programs (YCSP), Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum, The Brothers Apple Store, and Giles Family Farm at Notre Dame Orchards. There is something for everyone at this two-day festival to be held rain or shine. At the top of Shaker Hill Road, the YCSP will feature a number of events with all proceeds benefiting the hungry and the homeless children and

adults of York County. YCSP events will include a a juried arts and crafts fair, silent auction, penny auction, pig raffle, yard sale, book sale, farm booth, antique car rides, children’s activities, and live music. Tim Janis will appear all day on Saturday and Rock Bottom will appear on Sunday. There will be plenty of food choices including the lunch wagon, healthy food options, and fun snacks. The Bakery at Notre Dame will offer its delicious baked goods, including Shaker Blueberry Pies. The juried arts and crafts fair will include dozens of booths featuring painting, photography, jewelry, hand-sewn items, wood-

~ News ~ Naval Museum to Honor Veterans KITTERY – A special “Veterans’ Salute 2013” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum where re-enactors representing many 20th century conflicts will converge for a day-long celebration honoring all veterans. Visitors can chat with reenactors and see displays of military uniforms, period vehicles, weapons and equipment. As a special feature, local veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam will be available to meet and chat with the public.

Festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a special tribute to all veterans at 11 a.m. by crew members of the USS Topeka, currently at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, N.H. Weather permitting, much of the event will be held outdoors adjacent to the town monuments honoring locals who fought in Korea and Vietnam. The museum will also hold an open house featuring World War II items. The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum is located at 200 Rogers Road Extension.

YORK – RE/MAX Realty One is once again raffling off a lovely quilt to benefit the York Community Services Association Food Pantry. “These are tough

times for seniors and the funds raised by this quilt raffle will help put community funds to work,” says Jimmy Hager, broker at RE/MAX Realty One in York. The Food Pantry

has seen a dramatic increase this year in the number of seniors needing assistance, about 25 per week. The summer was also busy with 35-40 families each week and the food pantry concentrated on buying healthy snacks for children home for the summer. The handmade “Autumn Flavors” quilt was donated by Betty McPhee of York. Ogunquit Antique Show and Sale Next Weekend

OGUNQUIT – The 39th annual Ogunquit Antique Show and Sale is on its way. It showcases jewelry, linen, porcelains, crystal, furniture, glassware, prints and art of all forms in this beautiful show to be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Dunaway Center. The wares come from eighteen New England dealers who hand pick their displays to please the tastes of our ‘Ogunquitcentric’ appreciators.

The show is the only fundraiser that the Friends of the Ogunquit Heritage Museum hold to benefit the museum which is one of Ogunquit’s jewels in and of itself. The 1770 Samuel Buffum grandfather clock made by George Savage of Huddersfield, England is a gift to the society by Jean MacCorison of Barrington, RI and is on loan to the library where it will be kept under climate controlled conditions. The Samuel Buffum home, where the clock originally stood, is just a few doors down from the library on High Street, now the office of Dr. Charles Hintermeister. Samuel Buffum was the town’s unofficial historian for several decades and ran the Buffum Box Mill from 1866 until the early 1900s. MacCorison inherited the clock upon the death of Edith Buffum in 1978, daughter of Samuel Buffum. He is quoted as saying, “Sam and Edith would be very pleased to know their clock is back on High Street.”

~ News ~ Library and Museum to Host Chowder Festival KENNEBUNK – The Brick Store Museum and Kennebunk Free Library invite families and friends of all ages to the Our Shared History Chowder Festival on Sept. 14 from Noon to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the museum and library. This event celebrates the end of a summer-long collaboration between the organizations in the Our Shared History maritime heritage programming, which began in May with a book discussion of Moby Dick. Admission is $5 per person. All proceeds will be split between them. At the festival, visitors are invited to taste chowders from local restaurants, which have generously donated one gallon of their best chowder for the event. During the tasting, the Our Shared History “Words of the Ocean” Poetry Contest winners will be announced, and their poems will be on display for visitors to view. At 2:30 p.m. visitors are invited into the Brick Store Museum’s program center to see an

original one-act play discussing the ocean, past and present, by Steve Hrehovcik, starring Frank Stetson, titled “Battle in the Bottle.” Thus far, the festival will host chowder from well-known local spots like Forbes Seafood Restaurant, Alisson’s, the Maine Diner, The Village Tavern, Arundel Seafood Center, and Litchfield’s Bar and Grill. The exhibition was judged by Mary P. Harding, curator of contemporary art for the George Marshall Store Gallery in York. Harding awarded blue ribbons and cash prizes for best in show and first place in each media. Museum to Offer Program on Ogunquit Art Colony OGUNQUIT – On Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, 86 Obeds Lane, will offer a panel discussion on the art colony in Perkins Cove in the 1950s and 1960s. A diverse panel consisting of DeWitt Hardy, Helen Horn, Stuart Nudelman and Louise Tragard, all of whom are familiar with the art colony, will discuss and share stories about that time Hardy was one of the last artists to rent studio space from the Ogunquit School of Painting and Sculpture. In addition to working and painting in Ogunquit, Hardy served as the Ogunquit Museum of American Art’s (OMAA) curator and associate director for 11 years. Horn and her husband, Mike, were fixtures in Perkins Cove, living in what was once called the Ice House. She also served on the Barn Gallery and OMAA Boards, helping to bring the arts into a new era after the Ogunquit School of Painting and Sculpture closed.

Nudelman and his wife arrived in Ogunquit in the early 1960s. He went on to open a summer photography school here and became one of the first photographers to be juried into the prestigious Ogunquit Art Association. Tragard grew up spending summers across from Perkins Cove and knew many of the artists and their families first hand. In 1983 she went on to research and write the first draft of the Barn Gallery’s book, “A Century of Color,” about the first 100 years of Ogunquit’s art colony.

YORK – A new show of paintings by Boston artist and painter Jeannette Steele Esposito will hang through September at the gallery space at The Clown, 659 Route 1, York. Many pieces in the exhibit, both studio work and plein air paintings, showcase the Maine landscape. A series of smaller artful roosters, and several mixed media pieces round out the collection. Esposito resides in Ipswich, Mass., and visits her summer home in Round Pond, Maine, where she draws much of her inspiration for her work. Primarily a studio painter, she is also a member in plein air groups in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Esposito studied for six years as a senior guest student in the fine arts department at Kent State University. Esposito is currently an

The responsibility of raising a family while maintaining a career is never easy. Working moms often wish there were more time in the day to spend with their families or get more done at the office. While there’s no way women can add a 25th hour to their days, there are ways to manage your time more effectively so you can get around to doing those things you never seem to have the time to do. The Right Time to ask for a Raise Depends on a Host of factors Asking an employer for a raise can be nerve-wracking. When asking for a raise, men and women do not want to give the impression that they are unhappy, but they do want to convey to their employers that they feel their performance merits a higher salary. Balancing those two points can be difficult, and employees may even be intimidated at the idea of asking for more money. In many instances, employers recognize the efforts of their hard-working employees and are happy to reward them with more money, while other times an employer might recognize an employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts but simply be unable to offer them more money until a later time. Before asking for a raise, men and women should consider a host of factors. Timing: Timing is often everything when asking for a raise. A company coming off a poor financial quarter or several poor quarters in a row may not have the means to give its employees more money. This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a reflection on the employeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s value but rather a reflection on the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s financial reality at the moment. Men and women who want to ask their employers for more money should first consider the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current financial status. No time is better than when the company is breaking sales records and thriving, while no time is worse than when the company is laying off employees or instituting other costcutting measures. Recent pay history: Men and women who recently received a raise may

want to hold off on requesting more money. Even if your performance since your most recent raise has exceeded expectations, asking for another raise so shortly after your previous one may come off as selfish or unappreciative. D.A. Hurd Library Ask an Astronomer

As part of their Starblast Telescope loaning program the D. A. Hurd Library in N. Berwick has asked Astronomical Society of Northern New England to facilitate an “Ask an Astronomer” and Starparty evening on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Starting at 6 p.m. guests will talk to a local astronomer about the operation of the loaner scope and other scopes, as well as ask questions about astronomy in general. A Star Party will follow

With thru-hiker, Christi “Deva” Holmes, on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:30. Christi will share stories and photos from her journey hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2011. She will describe the 2,181 mile hike as a first-time backpacker. The Appalachian Trail winds from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Highlights include the Great Smokies and Shenandoah National Parks, the White Mountains, and Maine’s own 100-mile Wilderness. Attend the presentation and learn about life on the trail, the logistics of long distance hiking, the fun people

that are encountered, and the natural beauty. Whether you are an experienced hiker who has always dreamed of (or perhaps attempted and/or completed) hiking the AT, or simply love to live vicariously through the adventures of others, Christi’s tales are sure to entertain.

Mischief When you first meet Mischief, you’ll notice he has a little bit of a hole in his upper lip. No, he wasn’t in a fight and no, it’s not some terrible disease. York High School Games Cancelled Due to Eastern Equine Encephalitis YORK – Mosquitoes trapped and tested in York have recently tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The disease has been discovered in many towns throughout New England this summer. However, no human cases of EEE have been reported in York as of yet.

The positive test resulted from trapped mosquitoes in the area of Bog Road, but may be in other areas of York as well. The tested mosquitoes were not the type that bite humans, nevertheless they can pass it on to humanbiting mosquitoes via birds. The town has sprayed all school and municipal athletic

fields, but to further minimize the probability of mosquito bites York High School will be suspending home night games until October 1. An adjusted soccer and football schedule will be forth coming. These precautions are necessary until the first hard frost which for coastal York averages October 1.

Liquor Revenue Bond Sold, Hospitals to be Paid Within Weeks AUGUSTA – The State of Maine’s liquor revenue bond has been sold. The revenue bond, part of Governor LePage’s plan for a new wholesale liquor contract, will be used to repay $183.5 million in welfare debt the state owes to Maine hospitals. This payment will trigger a federal match of $305 million.

“With the sale of the liquor revenue bond, Maine hospitals are now just weeks away from being repaid the more than $484 million in welfare debt owed to them,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “This is good news for these employers and their local communities.” The full payment is expected to be paid during the

month of September. Meanwhile, the $220 million liquor operation revenue bond received an “all-in rate,” or total interest cost, of just 3.79 percent. “High demand from investors helped drive the interest rate down,” said Mike Goodwin, executive director of the Maine Municipal Bond Bank.

“The interest shown by investors and the positive ratings received from the rating agencies demonstrate the strength of the liquor business in Maine.” Standard & Poor’s assigned its ‘A+’ rating and Moody’s Investors Services assigned their ‘A1’ rating to the Maine liquor revenue bond. Ronald Dear Ronald, First, I am so happy to hear that you are backing up onto your external hard drive, and putting your pictures on CDs! I wish more people would do this. For the most part, online backup services like Carbonite and Mozy do the same thing as your external hard drive and CDs, but there are a couple of important differences. 1. Online backup services store your files securely on their servers. This means that in the event of a disaster like flood,

fire or theft, even though your computer, CDs and hard drives might be destroyed or stolen, your data is still available from the online backup service. All you need is your username and password. 2. Online backup services run automatically. This means that you don’t have to remember to plug in your external hard drive and start the backup program, or remember to create CDs of your photos. The online backup software remembers and automatically backs up your files for you. I always tell my clients that they should have their important data in at least three different locations. First on their hard drive, second on a local backup device like an external hard drive or file server, and thirdly in an offsite location. The Sent Items folder does not tend to get as large as the Deleted folder. If you have important messages that you have sent and want to save as a reference, you can either leave them in your sent items folder, or move them to another folder. If you are a person who sends lots of messages, or forwards a lot of messages, then you should probably clean out the sent items on a regular basis. If

~ News & Classifieds ~ Demonstration of Ikenobo Ikebana Senators Encourage Maine Students to Apply for Youth Program Set at Portsmouth Library PORTSMOUTH, NH – An Ikenobo Ikebana demonstration will be held at Portsmouth Public Library on Thursday, Sept.12, at 3:30 p.m. Immediately following the demonstration the accompanying exhibit will be unveiled in the library lobby. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Sept. 14. Ikebana is described as a way to express one’s feelings with each individual flower. Many different Ikebana styles have appeared during the 550 years of Ikebana history. They each have a distinctive character and are arranged with a par-

ticular form or pattern in mind. However, awareness of natural beauty allows the arranger to approach the ideal beauty which Ikebana seeks. The Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter is sponsoring the event. The Kittery Point Chapter is affiliated with the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America in San Francisco and Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Make the Most of Road Trips to Enjoy Fall Foliage Jaunts to view fall foliage are popular excursions come autumn. The vivid color on display in forests and parks is simply too much for many motorists to resist. Though nature’s beauty is often on display regardless of geography, some locales tend to boast more beauteous backdrops and picturesque landscapes than others. The key is to visit during peak viewing times. Leaves begin to change earlier in the northernmost latitudes. For example, much of Canada and portions of the northern United States begin to witness changes in foliage in late September, whereas regions further south must wait until October to see those changes. Mid-October is when peak times are most prevalent for the greatest portion of the United States. Travelers in North Dakota and Wyoming can view fall foliage at this time. Autumn coloring persists until late October and early November in certain areas, including the southeastern and central regions of the United States. When planning a road trip to see fall foliage, pay attention to local weather and foliage reports. Remember, road trips are quite popular this time of year, and municipal parks may be quite crowded on the weekends. If you can spare time off during the week, it may work to your advantage to cruise around when traffic is less congested. Bring along maps or a GPS system so that you can travel to multiple areas. Autumn leaves can be enjoyed from a car, but they are equally enjoyable when experienced on a hiking trip. Pack a bagged lunch and picnic in a quiet spot, and you’re bound to spot squirrels and other wildlife gathering up food reserves in preparation for the winter weather. While the foliage is impressive enough on its own, the science behind this awesome display of color is something to behold as well. During the spring and summer, leaves produce most of the food necessary for the tree’s

growth. Cells inside of the leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight, turning it into sugars and starch that the tree uses for food. In addition to green chlorophyll, other pigments specific to the types of trees are present. These pigments are generally masked by the large amount of chlorophyll present during warm weather. When autumn arrives, changes in the duration of sunlight result in the gradual decrease of chlorophyll and the breakdown of residual chlorophyll in the leaves as the trees prepare to stop food
