“I Will” Movement Comes to Maine Nationally, 33 million joined movement last year YORK COUNTY – The Maine Commission for Community Service invited area citizens this week to join the 9/11 tribute movement called “I Will” to commemorate this relatively new National Day of Service and Remembrance. Organized nationally by My Good Deed, a foundation started by family members of 9/11 victims and first responders, “I Will” calls on each citizen to pay tribute to those remembered on 9/11 by performing a good deed, a personal act of service, or an act of “neighboring.”

Maryalice Crofton, executive director of MCCS, said the tribute movement was a way to honor those who died on 9/11 and also to begin to look at the day in a positive light, somehow. “Families spent ten years to get 9/11 as a day of service and remembrance,” Crofton said. “In 2009, it finally happened as part of the Serve America Act passed by Congress.” The act reauthorized the American service programs, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, and affirmed all the national days of service including the new one, she said. This is the second year in a row that Maine has participated in the national campaign.

“People design or pick out their own way of remembering,” Crofton said. “Some of the things people did last year: there were a couple of classrooms who

wrote letters to active military stationed overseas, some people collected food for a food bank, some helped out neighbors who didn’t have family close by. It’s

Native American Speaker Looks to Refocus Perspectives KITTERY – The Native Americans who once called the Kittery area home will be the topic of the next program at the Kittery Historical and Naval Society. here long before we were, their lifestyle, social structures, and their relationship to the ocean. In addition to a power point presentation, Benner will offer several static displays of Native American interest. He hopes to shift the typical focus on Native American studies away from war, disease, and death to a better personal understanding of the way these Native people lived on a day-to-day basis. “The battles and conflicts between Native peoples and the Colonials could fill libraries, but people know very little

about those that called this area home,” said Benner. “I try to talk about - not the conflicts - but the Native people themselves, how they lived their social lives, how they survived the winters.” Benner, a Manchester, New Hampshire, resident is Native, himself. He’s part Penobscot, Piqwacket, and Micmac. When he speaks to groups of people, he tries to make his talks more natural than the traditional library lecture. “I hate going to lectures, I hate lecturers, and I hate lecturing,” he said. “But I’ve been doing this for twenty five years.” Benner teaches a history of New England course at Granite State College, in Concord, New Hampshire, and an adult ed course called “Native Peoples of New England” in Concord, Exeter, and Nashua. Benner received his BA in US History and Native Culture from Granite State College, and is in the last course for his Masters of Education in the Heritage Studies program at

Soccer Player from Wells Scores First Collegiate Goal WELLS – Abbigail White, of Wells, slammed home a penalty kick to score her first goal for Nichols College. The tally wasn’t enough, however, as Nichols fell to Emmanuel in overtime, 3-2. Emmanuel senior Megan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I.) deposited a feed from sophomore Amanda Roberts (Hudson, N.H.) just 1:51 into overtime to lift the Saints past host Nichols, 3-2, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women’s soccer match. With the win, Emmanuel improves to 2-1-0 while the Bison move to 0-1-1 on the season. Nichols struck first as junior captain Julie Monroe (Whitman, Mass.) sent a free kick into the back of the net from 30 yards out 56 seconds into the match for her first collegiate tally. First-year player White extended the Bison lead with the penalty kick that found the bottom right of the goal in the 13th minute. Less than a minute later, Emmanuel converted on a corner kick as junior Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) knocked in a header that was put into play

by senior Lauren Foley (North Andover, Mass.). The Saints led 18-5 in shots and 4-0 in corners for the frame. In the 61st minute sophomore Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) drilled the ball into the post and collected her own rebound only to have Emmanuel’s rookie goalkeeper Jenna Marcello (Hopedale, Mass.) made See WHITE page 28...

First Parish Congregational Church of York Calls Senior Pastor YORK – On August 26, the Rev. Dr. Verlee Anne Copeland was called by unanimous vote to serve as senior pastor of First Parish Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, of York. Copeland will begin her ministry the first week in November, leading worship on November 11. Chairman of the senior pastor search committee Don Bernier says, “We are fortunate to have found someone with Rev. Copeland’s talent and experience. Her background in education and the ministry clearly stood out.” Before her theological training at Yale Divinity School (M.Div.) and Chicago Theological Seminary (D.Min.), Copeland was a teacher, earning the distinction of master teacher. She began her ministry at First Congregational Church in Greeley, Colorado, first as associate pastor and then senior pastor. After serving for thirteen years, she was called to be senior minister at Union Church of Hinsdale UCC, in a suburb of Chicago where she served for eight years. For the past two years, she has taught graduate courses, while she and her husband Ellis, a psychologist, created a spiritual retreat center in

the mountains of Colorado. Missing the fulfillment of parish ministry and serving a congregation through preaching, teaching, pastoral care and service, she was referred to First Parish Church by a colleague. Copeland will be joined in York by her husband, who is Emeritus Professor at the University of Colorado and a senior administrator with the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. They share an extended, blended family of five grown children and five grandchildren. The Copelands will eventually make their home in the parsonage and look forward to becoming familiar figures in the community.

...PLAN from page 2 few months was done in a respectful manner – one might even say there was camaraderie among all the participants. It was refreshing to see individuals from opposite sides of the issue sit down and treat one another with decency; that’s something that is all too often missing in today’s world of politics.” The agreement, more than thirty pages long, addresses issues from student enrollment to assumed debt. If approved by the

voters, Arundel would pay its share of previously approved debt service for projects throughout the district – namely at Kennebunk High School and the Middle School of the Kennebunks – totaling just over $130,000. Arundel would also be responsible for one year’s share of the superintendent’s salary (approximately $19,000) and nearly $25,000 for the purchase of copiers and printers for the Mildred L. Day School. Offsetting these costs will be the return of Arundel’s share of any fund balance or capital improve-

ment funds attributed to Arundel during its time in the RSU. “The way we have been able to operate the district, running three to five percent below budget each year, I anticipate that when all is said and done, Arundel will be due a balance from the RSU, or it may be pretty balanced,” said Dolloff. Those numbers won’t be known for sure until the completion of the audit for the upcoming school year – something that won’t be done until the fall of 2013. Students from Arundel who currently attend schools in Kennebunk or Kennebunkport would be allowed to continue their enrollment for one year after the withdrawal, with the Town of Arundel paying tuition. The exception is at the middle school level, where the RSU must restrict enrollment only to those students who pay tuition privately. Arundel students may continue to attend Kennebunk High School for as long as school choice is provided, with the town paying tuition to the RSU for each student. Even if Arundel were to enter into a contract to send its high school students to one school, Kennebunk High School would remain an option until at least 2026. Portions of the agreement also address special education services, which may be a joint venture between the two potential districts, and the return to Arundel of its buses and property – namely, Mildred L. Day School. A public hearing will be held on Wednesday, September 19 at 7 pm in the Mildred L. Day Gymnasium to further explain the agreement. The Town of Arundel plans to place the question to the voters on the November 6 ballot, where it may be passed by a simple majority as long as the number of residents voting on the question is greater than fifty percent of the total who voted in the last gubernatorial election. RSU 21 was formed in 2009 under what is commonly referred to as the School Consolidation Law. For more information, contact Dolloff at 207-985-1100.

Health & Fitness School Health Update: Pertussis in Maine 2012 YORK COUNTY – Maine, like many other states, has been experiencing an increasing number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases over the past year. Nearly 400 cases of pertussis have been reported in Maine this year, more than four times the number of cases at the same time last year. Pertussis is a highly contagious, vaccinepreventable disease, usually spread through coughing, that can last for many weeks. It usually begins with cold-like symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, etc.) and often develops into a bad cough (which can sound like a “whoop”). It can be a devastating disease for infants and young children, though about half of the recent cases in Maine involved adolescents and young adults. Maine CDC requires that students diagnosed with pertussis be excluded from school until they have completed five days of treatment with an appropriate antibiotic. Pertussis immunization helps to prevent the spread of the disease to vulnerable infants and children in the community, as well as minimizing student absence due to illness. Please check with your student’s health care provider to ensure that his or her pertussis immunizations are up to date. Children less than 7 years of age should be immunized with four or five shots of DTaP against pertussis, depending on their age. A booster dose of the vaccine (Tdap) is recommended for all teens and adults who have not previously received a dose. For more information go to: http://go.usa.gov/dCO Parents are cautioned about several mix-ups between DAPTACEL (diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed, or DTaP) and ADACEL (tetanus toxoid and reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed, or Tdap). Nationally, “thirteen adult patients at one clinic and seven adult patients at another were vaccinated with the pediatric vaccine Daptacel instead of the intended Adacel. Fortunately, none of the patients appeared to have experienced any unusual vaccine reac-

tions despite the fact that the pediatric formulations contain greater amounts of the pertussis antigen. The similarities of the brand names, generic designations, and vaccine abbreviations (Tdap and DTaP) were thought to have contributed to the confusion. The similarities of the packaging also may contribute to these errors,” according to pharmacytimes.com. For further information, call the Maine Immunization Program at 1-800-867-4775.

The amount of protein needed varies by one’s body weight, age and activity level. A person who is 150 pounds should eat roughly 55 grams of protein each day. “Pink on the Links” raises $11,500 BIDDEFORD – “Pink on the Links,” the annual fund-raising tournament sponsored by the Biddeford-Saco Ladies Association of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club, raised $11,500 to support the work of Southern Maine Medical Center’s (SMMC) Center for Breast Care. In presenting their gift, Laura Blanchette and Ruth Colucci, co-presidents, reported that this year the members of the Association decided to “give

locally.” SMMC president & CEO Ed McGeachey said, “At SMMC, we believe that breast cancer survivorship begins at the time of diagnosis. This very generous gift will help us provide even more special services for our breast cancer survivors here in York County. I hope others will follow your example and support programs that benefit their neighbors in York County.” One hundred thirty women played in the tournament held on July 20 at the Biddeford-Saco

Country Club. Many local businesses and individuals helped make the tournament a success including major sponsors: Stephen and Corleen Garland, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, Northeast Delta Dental, and Pape Automotive. Dunkin’ Donuts of Biddeford provided breakfast and water was donated by Poland Spring Bottling Co.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Don’t Fall Off The “Fiscal Cliff”

What is the “fiscal cliff?” It’s the term being used by many to describe the unique combination of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2013. The ominous term reflects the belief by some that, taken together, higher taxes and decreased spending at the levels prescribed have the potential to derail the economy. Whether we do indeed step off the cliff at the end of the year, and what exactly that will mean for the economy depends on several factors. Will expiring tax breaks be

extended? With the “Bush tax cuts” (extended for an additional two years by legislation passed in 2010) set to sunset at the end of 2012, federal income tax rates will jump up in 2013. We’ll go from six federal tax brackets (10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, and 35%) to five (15%, 28%, 31%, 36%, and 39.6%). The maximum rate that applies to long-term capital gains will generally increase from 15% to 20%. And while the current lower long-term capital gain tax rates now apply to qualifying dividends, starting in 2013, dividends will once again be taxed as ordinary income.

Additionally, the temporary 2% reduction in the Social Security portion of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) payroll tax, in place for the last two years, also expires at the end of 2012. And, lower alternative minimum tax (AMT) exemption amounts (the AMT-related provisions actually expired at the end of 2011) mean that there will be a dramatic increase in the number of individuals subject to AMT when they file their 2012 federal income tax returns in 2013. Other breaks go away in 2013 as well. - Estate and gift tax provisions will change significantly (reverting to 2001 rules). For example, the amount that can generally be excluded from estate and gift tax drops from $5.12 million in 2012 to $1 million in 2013, and the top tax rate increases from 35% to 55%. - Itemized deductions and dependency exemptions will once again be phased out for individuals with high adjusted gross incomes (AGIs). - The earned income tax credit, the child tax credit, and the American Opportunity (Hope) tax credit all revert to old, lower limits and less generous rules. - Individuals will no longer be able to deduct student loan in-

terest after the first 60 months of repayment. There continues to be discussion about extending expiring provisions. The impasse, however, centers on whether tax breaks get extended for all, or only for individuals earning $200,000 or less (households earning $250,000 or less). Many expect there to be little chance of resolution until after the November election.

income tax return, and $125,000 for married individuals filing separately). Both of these new taxes were created by the health-care reform legislation passed in 2010--recently upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court--and it would seem unlikely that anything will prevent them from taking effect.

Will new taxes take effect in 2013? Beginning in 2013, the hospital insurance (HI) portion of the payroll tax--commonly referred to as the Medicare portion-increases by 0.9% for individuals with wages exceeding $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing a joint federal income tax return, and $125,000 for married individuals filing separately). Also beginning in 2013, a new 3.8% Medicare contribution tax is imposed on the unearned income of high-income individuals. This tax applies to some or all of the net investment income of individuals with modified adjusted gross income that exceeds $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing a joint federal

Will mandatory spending cuts be implemented? The failure of the deficit reduction supercommittee to reach agreement back in November 2011 automatically triggered $1.2 trillion in broadbased spending cuts over a multiyear period beginning in 2013 (the formal term for this is “automatic sequestration”). The cuts are to be split evenly between defense spending and nondefense spending. Although Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits are exempt, and cuts to Medicare provider payments cannot be more than 2%, most discretionary programs including education, transportation, and See CLIFF page 14...

Invest Early - and Wisely - for College School is back in session. If you have school-age children, you’re probably busy getting them acclimated to another year of hitting the books. But the school years go by quickly, so it won’t be long before your kids are ready to head off to college. Will you be financially prepared to help them? It’s certainly a challenge, especially given rising costs of higher education. Consider these figures from the College Board: For the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost (including tuition, fees, room and board) was $17,131 per year for an in-state student attending a public, four-year college or university. For a student attending a private four-year school, the comparable average cost was $38,589 annually. And these numbers are likely to increase in the years ahead. So, what can you do to help meet the high costs of higher education? For starters, you need to save and

invest — early and often. And you’ll also want to choose investments that are particularly well suited for college. Here are a few suggestions: • 529 plan — When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college expense for your child, or even your grandchild. (However, non-qualified withdrawals may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Contribution limits are quite high so, in all likelihood, you’ll be able to put as much as you want into a 529 plan; although you generally can’t exceed the annual gift tax exclusion, which is $13,000 per beneficiary in 2012. Furthermore, if you participate in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be tax deductible on your state taxes. • Coverdell Education Savings Account — Depending on your income level, you can contribute up to $2,000 annually to a Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) in 2012. Your Coverdell earn-

ings and withdrawals will be tax-free, provided you use the money for qualified education expenses. (Any non-education withdrawals from a Coverdell ESA may be subject to a 10 percent penalty.) Unlike a 529 Plan, in addition to college expenses, Coverdell funds can be used for kindergarten through 12th grade expenses and you can place Coverdell ESA contributions into virtually any investment you choose - stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, etc. • Zero coupon bonds — A zero coupon bond is priced at a discount to its principal or face value. You receive the principal

value when the bond matures. So, you could purchase a zero coupon bond that matures in the year your child is ready to go to college. Although you won’t receive regular interest payments throughout the life of the zero coupon bond, you’ll still be liable for the taxes on this interest. So, before purchasing a zero coupon bond, consult with your tax advisor. These investments have proven popular among many parents and grandparents. How to Save on Your Next Flight The cost of travel continues to increase, especially for those travelers who prefer to travel by air. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average round-trip flight in 2011 cost consumers $362, a 7.8 percent increase from the previous year. What’s more, that figure does not include taxes or additional costs paid at the airport, which can include potentially expensive baggage fees.

It’s no surprise then that many would-be travelers are somewhat reticent to fly, especially if those travelers have kids in tow. However, there are ways to save on flights; it just takes a little flexibility and a willingness to shop around. * Don’t insist on nonstop flights. No one likes layovers, but they might just save you a substantial amount of money. Compare the cost of a nonstop flight to your desired destination to one that has

one or even multiple stops. Chances are the cost of a nonstop flight will be considerably more than a flight that includes at least one layover. Though connecting flights are not ideal, many international airports now offer a host of stores and restaurants that can help make those layovers more bearable. * Don’t necessarily choose a round-trip ticket. Though it’s almost second nature for travelers to purchase a round-trip ticket, it might be more affordable to buy

two one-way tickets instead. This allows consumers to compare prices of tickets from different airlines, which can make the overall cost lower. * Be flexible with airports. Many online travel sites, including Orbitz and Expedia, allow consumers to search for flights departing from and arriving to multiple airports. This is done to give travelers more flexibility and ultimately to help them find

the most affordable flight. Take advantage of this option. However, before booking the flight, consider the costs associated with getting to and from an airport that’s farther away from home or your desired destination than the airport that’s closest to both. The cost of transportation to and from an airport that’s off the beaten path might offset the savings on the cost of the flight.

...CLIFF from page 12 energy programs will be subject to the automatic cuts. New legislation is required to avoid the automatic cuts. But while it’s difficult to find anyone who believes the across-the-board cuts are a good idea, there’s no consensus on how to prevent them. Like the expiring tax breaks, the direction the dialogue takes will likely depend on the results of the November election. What’s the worst-case scenario? Many fear that the combination of tax increases and spending cuts will have severe negative economic consequences. According to a report issued by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (Economic Effects of Reducing the Fiscal Restraint That Is Scheduled to Occur in 2013,

May 2012), taken as a whole, the tax increases and spending reductions will reduce the federal budget deficit by 5.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) between calendar years 2012 and 2013. The Congressional Budget Office projects that under these fiscal conditions, the economy would contract during the first half of 2013 (i.e., we would likely experience a recession). It’s impossible to predict exactly how all of this will play out. One thing is for sure, though: the “fiscal cliff” figures to feature prominently in the national dialogue between now and November. Habitat for Humanity ReStore retail locations take donated new and used building materials and furniture and resell them to the public. Proceeds are used to cover the actual costs of home builds and renovations. “It has been a very busy and exciting year behind the scenes for Habitat for Humanity in York County,” said affiliate president Lee Cooper. “We have been working hard to increase our visibility to everyone from mission-critical land donors and financial supporters to qualifying families. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady: I recently updated Internet Explorer and installed Microsoft updates. Since then, clicking on links within e-mails or websites, or even on my Start menu, opens the link in a new tab rather than in a new window as before. I find it more convenient and quicker to toggle through multiple windows using ALT+TAB rather than using the mouse to click on each tab, or right-clicking the mouse on the link for the “Open in new window” prompt. How can I change the default from new tab to new window? Thanks. Donna Dear Donna, I have to admit, I never thought of using the keyboard to switch between web pages, that’s a great idea. I do usually use the keyboard to scroll down a web page, so using the keyboard to switch between pages would be great! I have two possible solutions for your problem. The first is to use a keyboard combination to switch between the tabs in your Internet Explorer window, and the second is to change the default settings so that all new pages open up in their own window. If you want to toggle through multiple tabs in Internet Explorer (This works in Google Chrome too!) just use the keyboard combination, Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab (Using the shift key, reverses the direction) If you have a large number of tabs open, you can press the Ctrl key and a number to go to that number tab. So, Ctrl+1

takes you to the first tab, and Ctrl+5 takes you to the fifth tab. The other solution would be to change the behavior of Internet Explorer so that it opens each web page in its own window. 1. Click on “Start” then click on “Control Panel” in the right column. 2. In the Control Panel, click on “Network and Internet.” 3. On the Network and Internet page, click on “Internet Options.” 4. In the Internet Properties dialog box, make sure you are on the “General” tab and click on the “Settings” button in the “Tabs” section. 5. If you don’t want to deal with tabs at all, just remove the check mark in front of “Enable tabbed browsing” and click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box. 6. If you still want to have tabs available, go to the two bottom sections, and change both of them to “A new window.” This will open both pop-ups, and links in a new window. 7. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’m working on a list in Microsoft Excel. I need to highlight certain lines with either yellow or purple, but still leave the text black. When I highlight the line and chose yellow or purple, it changes the text to either yellow or purple. Please help! Sylvia Dear Sylvia,

It sounds like you are changing the text color, when what you really need to change is the background color of the cell that the text is in. Here is how to do that in Excel. 1. Open your Excel list. 2. Click on the cell that you need to highlight. Don’t select the text in the cell because that will only allow you to change the color of the text, and what you want is to change the background color of the cell that the text is in. 3. Once you have selected the cell, you will see an icon with a little bucket of paint right next to the tool for changing the text color. Click on that bucket icon and select the color you want to highlight the cell with. Your cell will now have the background color that you have chosen, and your text will still be black. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Vista and do OK with it. My problem is my “D” drive is full although I have lots of memory on my system. I get an error message every day saying my backup failed. The “D” drive has 14.9 GB used and 12.1 MB of free space. I have tried several friends to help me clean up this drive but to no avail. Can you help? Thank you, Louise Dear Louise, It sounds like your D: drive is actually a recovery partition on your hard drive, which would explain why it is full. A recovery partition is a special section of your hard drive that holds all the files

needed to recover your computer to factory condition if anything goes wrong with the software on your computer. For example, if you got infected with a virus. Computer manufacturers used to provide the recovery files on one or more disks (CDs or DVDs) and you could use the disks to repair your computer, but they have switched over to providing these files on your hard drive, probably because it cuts costs. If this is the case with your computer, then backing up to the D: drive is not a good idea, and probably not possible without losing the recovery files. I would suggest that you get an external hard drive that attaches to your computer by USB cable to backup to. Some other options to consider might be a remote backup like Carbonite or Mozy, or you could backup to a CD or DVD. Backing up to your D: drive (which is part of your hard drive) does not protect your data from hard drive failure, fire, theft or even an electrical surge. An external hard drive will protect your data in the event that the hard drive on your computer fails, and probably from an electrical surge (If you don’t keep it plugged in all the time) but it still won’t protect you from fire or theft. Remote backup plans like Carbonite and Mozy run automatically in the background when your computer is running, and do protect you from hard drive failure, fire, theft, electrical surges, and even the dog eating your homework. In addition, the remote backup companies keep older versions of your files so that you can retrieve an older copy if you have problems with the copy currently on your computer.

I hope this helps you with your backup. Elizabeth Hi Elizabeth, You recently addressed the problem of how to increase the print size of web pages using Internet Explorer browser. I am having the same problem but am using Firefox browser and use Yahoo.com email program and Yahoo as my home page, therefore I have no small “Printer Icon” with the small arrow that you described using IE browser. I wonder if you could tell me the steps of how I could increase the print size using Firefox web browser? I am a recipient of your newsletter of many, many years and I learn something each week. Thank you, Jeanette Dear Jeanette, You can access the print settings in Firefox, you just have to use a different method of getting to them. Open Firefox, and go to the page that you want to print. Tap the “Alt” key on your keyboard to display the Firefox menu bar. In the menu bar, click on “File” and then “Page Setup.” The Page Setup dialog box will open, and you will see a check box in front of “Shrink to fit Page Width.” Click to remove the check mark from the “Shrink to fit” setting. While you are in this dialog box, you can also change the scale to whatever percentage you desire. Click “OK” to save your changes and close the dialog box and you will now be able to print with a larger print size in Firefox. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? AUGUSTA – Central Maine Power Company, a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, marked a milestone in its Maine Power Reliability Program this month as construction crews set the 2,000th transmission structure in Lewiston, Maine. The company will erect more than 5,000 structures by the time the project is completed in 2015. “We are building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” said Doug Herling, vice president of Special Projects at CMP. “The MPRP will enhance reliability and increase capacity in the lines that serve as the backbone of our grid, and the integration of new

protection and controls technology will give Maine a state-of-theart transmission system.” The 2,000th structure was set by crews from Irby Construction working for CMP at a site near Old Webster Road in Lewiston. The 120-foot, weatheringsteel structure supports a 345,000 volt transmission line. Begun in September of 2010, the MPRP is the largest construction project ever undertaken in Maine. It includes the construction of five new 345-kilovolt substations and related facilities linked by approximately 440 miles of new transmission lines. The project will reinforce the company’s forty-year-old system

and increase capacity for the integration of new generation in the New England region. CMP estimates that nearly 2,700 people are directly involved in construction on the Maine Power Reliability Program. A study of the economic impacts of the project by the Maine Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Southern Maine estimated it could spur as many as 800 more jobs through indirect and induced employment.

Candidates’ Communication Choices: 5 Ways to Persuade the Undecided 6 Percent of Voters

Six percent of all Americans who are eligible to vote in the November presidential election aren’t aligned with a political party. This undecided group will make all the difference. What do the voters who are still on the fence need to hear, or see, to make their choice among the candidates? Here are the communication choices candidates make that will determine who is the next president, and vice president, of the United States: 1. Word Selection. The successful candidate will choose specific words that conjure up emotional images. For example, Paul Ryan walks onstage with his mom, Betty, and promises to end this raid on Medicare. He assures his listeners that the board will not mess with “your” mom’s or “my” mom’s healthcare. Ryan chooses the words “your” and “my” to build a rapport with his audience, and words like “raid,” “promise,” and “piggybank” are designed to motivate seniors to run into the voting booth, as fast as they can get there, to protect themselves from an encroachment upon their Medicare ben-

efits and a threat against their healthcare. Point made! 2. Vocal Variety. Along with choosing the right words, candidates have to work on their inflection, volume, and pace. Before the dawning of YouTube and other broadcast media outlets – when the print media reigned – all that mattered was the content of the candidates’ messages. Today, we’re going to hear the ways in which the candidates deliver their messages. This is the time for President Obama to tap into his much-remarked-upon vocal talents. A man who can channel Al Green has no excuse, ever, to slip into a boring monotone and let his listeners (and his potential supporters) slip away! 3. Distilling the message. Candidates need the ability to be concise in their verbal and written communication. Voters are looking for concise, easy-tounderstand strategies. Usually, less is more. Sentences that are very short – 8 to 13 words, no more – are the most persuasive. Even the best politicians derail themselves when their sentences are too long. Listeners tune out. Even the best language in a long

sentence loses a listener. Mitt Romney has mastered the art of editing the highlights of his strategies and plans into concise sound bites that his listeners can easily digest. A candidate who does the best job editing does the best job selling him- or herself to those undecided voters. 4. Smile, smile, smile. While some of the undecided six percent of voters are aural, and will make their choices based on what they hear, others are more attuned to visual – that is, nonverbal -- persuasion. They’ll rely on a candidate’s facial expression for their cues about whom to trust, and a smile will go a long way toward making that decision. The ability to smile naturally when speaking to a group, even if your topic isn’t humorous, is a way to demonstrate warmth and build a rapport. Joe Biden has mastered the art of smiling to present himself as approachable. He keeps that smile on his face frequently and naturally – and, in November, he may just find those undecided voters smiling back at him. 5. Using Your Aristotle. So much of what we know

Cape Arundel Remembered: A Call for Memories KENNEBUNKPORT Many of the Cape Arundel cottage families who have come in to see the current exhibition have mentioned stories, photographs, or artifacts they have. Join the Kennebunkport Historical Society in the Pasco Center gallery on Tuesday, September 18, at 4:30 to share in some of these Cape Arundel reminiscences. If you have some of your own, please bring them along! They will also have a binder of photos that are in their collection from which copies can be made, and they welcome the opportunity to scan any that are new to them. about public speaking today derives from what Aristotle taught us, and the successful candidates will tap into this ancient wisdom. They’ll use ethos, pathos, and logos appropriately. Ethos relies on the speaker’s credibility. How easy should it be for an incumbent president – or, for that matter, for a corporate executive – that he has an extensive background in leadership? Pathos moves past speakers’ credibility to their ability to connect emotionally with their listeners. Remember Paul Ryan’s mother, Betty? She was (along with being a mother) a wonderful rhetorical prop, and Joe Biden uses his own pathos when, for instance, he recalls losing his wife and daughter in a car crash. As for logos, the use of logic to make your argument? Mitt Romney’s five-point-plan

for achieving energy independence can appeal to voters who want to hear substantive ideas. President Obama’s has – it’s a bit more complicated, but it still appeals to voters’ intellect – a twenty-five point plan to reform IT management. Ethos, pathos, and logos – the best use of those old pillars of communication will help someone win the Oval Office in November. When an election is as close as the November election is shaping up to be, communication matters. The candidates who win the votes are the ones who can build trust and rapport with the undecided six percent of the voters through the content, and style, of their speech and through their visual presentation. All of the candidates this See PERSUADE page 38...

OGUNQUIT – Daytime Emmy award nominee, Matthew Ashford joins Sally Struthers and the cast of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5 the Musical” as Franklin Hart Jr. in the Ogunquit Playhouse production. Ashford is no stranger to the stage having performed in the National Tour of “Mamma Mia!” and numerous regional theatre productions including “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Guys and Dolls,” “The Sound of Music,” “Funny Girl” and “Arsenic and Old Lace.” Ashford received the Artistic Director Achievement Award for Lead Actor in a Musical for “Into the Woods.” In addition to playing contract roles on “One Life

THE CAMPAIGN (R)

Ryan Montbleau Band to Play at Jonathan’s OGUNQUIT – Songs for Ryan Montbleau typically need to simmer. In his ten-year career, this gifted singer and his limber band have built their catalog the old-fashioned way: by introducing new songs to their live set, then bending and shaping them over dozens of performances before committing a definitive version to the hard drive. At 34, he’s a late-bloomer who’s right on time. Montbleau didn’t start singing and playing guitar in earnest until he was in college, at Villanova. Later, working at the House of Blues in Boston, he began playing solo sets there as a warmup act. His band came together naturally, over time, planting strong roots in coffeeshops, folk venues and rock clubs before converting audiences on an outdoor festival circuit that now stretches across the country. Along the way, riders will see as many as nine historic lighthouses, the rocky coast for which Maine is so famous, and majestic sand beaches. Maps, cue sheets, multiple rest stops, food, refreshments and hot showers are provided by ride organizers.

“Riding in southern Maine is just spectacular, especially at that time of year,” said Bob Bowker, spokesperson for the ride. “The terrain is mostly flat and easy to ride, but the scenery can be stunning. In early September especially, the weather is fabulous. For a cyclist who has always wanted to visit Maine, this trip is a home run.” No wonder this event has drawn more riders every year – more than 680 in 2011, ages 12 to over 70. Participants can get more information and register by visiting www.EasternTrail.org, or by calling 207-284-9260. Registration is $50 before midnight on September 3 for online registrations, and by end of business day on August 31 for mail-in and phone registrations. After

WEST KENNEBUNK – AWS Strut Your Mutt Strut Your Mutt is only days away! This scenic stroll on Sunday, September 9, raises money for the AWS Sadie Fund, a medical fund for the many pets who come to us throughout the year with medical needs. Bring your favorite canine(s) and join other like-minded animal lovers for this feel-good event. Registration and activities start at 10 am. The walk begins at 11 am and covers a two-mile round trip route along the Kennebunk Beaches, beginning at Mother’s Beach (located farthest south on Beach Avenue next to the playground). Water stations for dogs and people will be located along the route. “Marlee” After a little adventure on the lam, Marlee is back and ready to find herself a new home. Not to mention she’s got a snazzy new ‘do too. Marlee is a sweet ten-year-old who can’t wait to meet you. She enjoys spending time with her people and going on a few walks a day. She would love to share her new home with some other dogs, dog-savvy cats, and respectful older children who won’t make her nervous. This little sweetheart is patiently waiting, so why not stop in and meet Marlee today? “Charlotte Mae” You’ll have to excuse Charlotte Mae’s appearance, she hasn’t had time to put her face on. Yes, this three-year-old cat has a few boo-boos, but all wounds heal with time. What matters most is what’s inside, and inside Charlotte Mae is a relaxed, sweet, and loving girl. She doesn’t let a whole lot get to her, even when

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Each of us at Safe Haven has a special wish for each kitty we care for. What we wish for Rosebud and Snowball is that someone will adopt both of these beautiful kitties and give them the home they have been awaiting for years. Yes, years! Snowball is an elegant white beauty with one blue eye and one green eye. She’s been with us since 2007, after surviving a wintertime under a tarped boat at a lake. Spotted by a kind woman and rescued by Safe Haven in 2007, she was first boarded and then brought to our building to become socialized. This gentle darling befriended other shy kitties when they were brought in, and developed a very close bond with Rosebud who arrived two years later, in 2009. Rosebud arrived as a feral

farm cat, thin and terrified of people. As a hungry stray, she lived in a goat barn for warmth and shelter. The barn owners said she could stay but they could not afford to feed her. She’d have to live on mice and whatever she could catch. After she was trapped and spayed, just as she was ready to be returned to the farm, we decided that we just couldn’t do that to her. We were actually in the van, holding the map to their farm when we took another look at this poor, frightened kitty. So feral, so helpless. Her life at the farm would be a constant struggle. Suddenly we found ourselves ripping up the map and smiling, knowing that this kitty would never have to want for food or warmth again. She would be a Safe Haven kitty,

there’s a commotion about. She just relaxes and waits for things to calm down. Charlotte Mae might not come running at the first hint of attention, but she won’t back away from it either. If you’d like to pet her, she’s fine with it. If not, she’ll just stay in her cozy spot and continue to relax. Charlotte Mae is quite the attractive and dainty lady who would make a great addition to practically any home. If you’d like to add her to yours, then stop on by today to meet Charlotte Mae. “Ken” Ken is quite the looker, and quite the active fellow too. Ken is a one--year old American Guinea Pig. Like many Guinea Pigs, he’s a little skittish around new people. Give him a cozy cage to relax in and plenty of treats to munch on and he’ll relax in no time. He’d particularly enjoy a cage with plenty of room to romp around in. If you’d like to adopt Ken, then stop on by the shelter today to meet him.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – Meet Harley Harley is a sweet little black/ tan/white Nin Pin X, about one and a half years old, rescued from a kill shelter in North Carolina. Harley is looking for a new family where someone is home most of the time (Harley is afraid to stay home alone), a family or person with a lot of love to spare and patience with a little guy that has had a hard start. Harley firmly believes “a lap is a terrible thing to waste” as he loves to sit and cuddle with his owner. If you are the person or family that would love a sweet eager-to-learn and please-you little dog, Harley would like to make your acquaintance. Harley loves people, will do well with other dogs and cats, loves to ride and is house trained.

In addition to Harley our featured pet of the week, we have taken in many, many more companion pets that are coming in from families that are unable to keep their furry family members. Many kittens, teenage kittens, young adult cats and adult cats are waiting for you to provide a loving family. Adoption hours are Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and by ap-

and we would help her learn to trust people. That was years ago when we were still at our location in Kennebunk. With time and love and patience, Rosebud and Snowball did indeed learn to trust people. They became confident, happy kitties. They are no-bother kitties, adaptable, easy-going, happy and grateful to be with us and together. They’re as close as two peas in a pod, always together in our upstairs playroom. They nap together, eat together, groom and head-butt each other. Trevor, a talented young volunteer, took this photo of Snowball and Rosebud, which captures the beauty of their relationship. We love both cats. They’re icons of our history. They deserve a home where they can live together and be cherished forever. Whoever adopts these two beautiful cats will be rewarded with the experience of best friends showing enduring love and devotion to one another. A quiet home with devoted cat-lovers and solid commitment to adoption are encouraged to apply. Come and meet these two gems at Safe Haven. For more information, call Joyce 207-2298314. KENNEBUNK – An exhibition entitled “Animal Kingdom” by Gwen Page will be on display at the Kennebunk Free Library in the Speers Gallery during the month of September. The exhibit features a beautiful selection of wood and linoleum block prints of domesticated and non-domesticated animals. As part of the Kennebunk ArtWalk, Page will be hosting an open reception on Friday, September 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm; the public is invited to attend. The exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours. “Typically, I gather design ideas as I see them. I try to select designs that will work well and will be interesting in the twodimensional medium of a block print. I am happy to have this opportunity to show these at Kennebunk Free Library,” said Page, who originally began making these blocks to create Christmas Cards for friends and family. Her design inspirations are from life, figurines, magazines, newspapers, bronzes and ceramics. The wood and linoleum blocks are completely constructed by hand, without the aid of electronics or technology. The block impression is then printed on a variety of papers – including fine Chinese papers – and framed to complement the work. The final result is a wonderful collection of images portrayed with a visual depth that belie their block form origins. In her youth, Page studied print-making, watercolor

York Public Library Presents Paintings by Peter Agrafiotis YORK – During September and October, York Public Library will display paintings by Cape Neddick artist Peter Agrafiotis. Agrafiotis’ work has been represented by galleries on 57th Street in New York and Newbury Street in Boston, and has hung in galleries in San Francisco and Paris, among other cities. Agrafiotis has had a dozen solo exhibitions. His canvases hang in over a hundred corporate, private, and museum collections and have been reproduced and/or written about in Art News, Boston Magazine, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, American Artist, Art New England, and many other publications. Agrafiotis has exhibited at the American Academy of Design and has been nominated four times for awards at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City. Agrafiotis paints a variety of subjects in a narrow, but saturated, pallet. Alternating between abstraction and representation, even in his figura-

and drawing at summer classes offered at the Brick Store Museum, in Kennebunk. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Literature, along with a master’s in International Studies and is a 1994 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law. She later studied oil painting and ceramics at The Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. (courtesy photo)

tive work he shows more concern with conveying emotion than copying nature. Chuck Kapelke, of Boston Magazine, wrote, “In Agrafiotis’ painting every detail seems to vibrate with meaning. Indeed, part of the allure of these paintings is their psychological distortion.” Maine Poet Laureate Emeritus Baron Wormser called Agrafiotis’ trees, “Strong stuff, truly iconic… as if you’ve burned your way through to another form of light and apprehension.” Rose Museum Director Emeritus Carl Belz wrote about “a dripping lushness or sultriness, a jungle density.” For a look at his work, go to his website, at peteragrafiotis.com. Agrafiotis also writes and, before selling it to paint most of the time, he created Clue Magazine, a satiric guidebook, popular in the 1980s for his stories set in Tatnic, an off-beat, fictitious Maine community. ...TRANSITS from page 19 vices for veterans and military families. “Today’s announcement will help ensure that the people of Maine and New Hampshire who proudly serve in our armed forces have better access to quality, convenient transportation,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This is just one way to thank them for their service and to support President Obama’s goal of helping provide our servicemen and women with access to the jobs and resources they need when they come home.” Federally-funded transportation improvements in the greater-Seacoast area include COAST’s new Clipper Connection commuter bus service, as well as increased frequency of service on regional bus routes and the development of a one-click, one-call information center that veterans, military families and others will be able to use to find information online and by phone about transportation services in the area. “America’s war heroes and those who work so hard to support them deserve transit options that will provide reliable access to a steady paycheck and allow them to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets,” said Rogoff. ...PERSUADE from page 24 time around seem to have the tools necessary for success. The pair of candidates who use those tools most wisely, and most consistently, will be our next U.S. president and vice president. Good luck, and good communication, to all of the candidates! Monica Murphy is a Senior Coaching Partner with Brookline, Massachusettsbased The Speech Improvement Company. Visit her online at www.speechimprovement.com.

“These long-term investments in the Seacoast area will reduce congestion during shift changes at the shipyard and make it easier for people who live in Portsmouth, Kittery and the surrounding areas to get to work and home each day.” Rogoff was joined by COAST executive director Rad Nichols, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard deputy public works officer John Wyeth, Kittery town manager Robert Markel and Portsmouth assistant mayor Robert Lister. The Department of Transportation is providing $2.6 million to COAST to increase the frequency of regional bus routes to every thirty minutes during peak commuting periods, with matching funds provided by the New Hampshire Turnpike Authority, as part of the Little Bay Bridge rehabilitation project between Dover and Newington, New Hampshire. In addition, the department is providing $640,000 for the newly expanded Clipper Connection commuter bus service, with matching funds provided by the Navy. The $324,000 grant was announced on Veterans Day in November 2011, and the funding is being made available this week through the Federal Transit Administration’s Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative (VTCLI) program to help veterans, military families and others connect to jobs and services through improved access to local transportation options. COAST has met all of the grant obligations and is ready to begin implementation of the project. The COAST project is one of eighty-six projects over two years that were selected to receive funding as part of this grant program. More information can be found at www.fta. dot.gov/veterans.
